Paul, what a wonderful surprise! And just think, it only took 500 posts to get from a single little orange BAT to a whole neighborhood full of Mouse Houses! I am honored to see them in West End, and I shall certainly treasure the disc - you're just too good to me!

Thank you - you're so thoughtful...
Joan

Paul x2:  Thank you for the link – it was very interesting.  I am pleased you like this city and the airport – I hope you like this update too.

Bat x2:  Thanks as always Bat

Dustin:  Wow, thanks Dustin, what a great comment – I appreciate it.  Hopefully you like this closer look at the airport.

Arthur:  Hehehe, thanks.

Joan x2:  Thanks (as always) for that Joan.  Yes, dairy farms are not so popular next to the runway.  I'm glad you liked the development shots – wasn't sure if I'd been overdoing them recently.  This update shows the area in a bit more detail I think and at last Carnaby itself has developed.  And it's a pleasure to show off the Mouse House here and you're welcome re the disc  :)

Dan:  Good to see you again Dan, and thanks for the comments.  And yes, I kinda realised that the runways needed another exit or two – so that was already inhand.  Hopefully you'll like them now.

Sebes:  Yes, I know that airports are one of your favourites, so hopefully you'll like Sisson.  I've spent more time on it making it just.....so!  I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.  And thanks for making Rhenen one of WEN's key destinations  :satisfied:

Fabian:  Welcome to West End Fabian!  Thanks for your comments and I hope to see you here again soon.

Matt:  I always enjoy your comments Matt, so thanks for being a great supporter of West End.  And no worries re the Movie Maker tips – good luck and if you need any help, just shout.  As for the two orange buildings, I've posted a pic below.  They are the Helvetia Building by SimGoober.  I'm sure I got it from the STEX.  I have customised the lot very slightly – I added the West End flag instead of the Swiss flag!!  It is both I-HT growable and ploppable and I use it as a kind of money cheat!  It generates approx 1,500 tax revenues per month and also much needed I-HT jobs!

You also asked about the farms around where I live.  Well here's a couple of pics.  No real obvious natural reasons why they take on these shapes.  I guess it's just that the land has been under cultivation for a few hundred years longer than in North America and fields have been split up over the years.  I live in Runwell (part of Wickford) and these are the fields just north of town.

Pat:  Hey no worries Pat – I know how time can bite at times.  Thanks for the comment and yeah, I guess the airport is the biggest I've done (so far!!)

Krisztian:  Yes, I've had a bit of a blast recently!!

FrankU:  That's a very nice comment!  I'm pleased you like it and I hope you like this.  And I'd definitely like to sea your sea port some time!

Derry:  Good to see you and yes, no worries, I know how RL can be!!  Thanks for the comment and it's actually my second airport, and I can see the improvements over the first!

Today we continue with the tour of the borough of Carnaby, which of course is home to the new Sisson International Airport.  Let's start by having a look at the town of Sisson:

The town got it's name from one of West End's "founding fathers", Jeff Sisson.  The Sisson family were one of the first families to settle in the place where the town now sits.  At the time it was known as North Carnaby.  Jeff was always the brightest and most ambitious member of the family and he won a scholarship to study at the University of North Carolina at Covington (UNCC).  So at 18 years old, Jeff set off on his adventure to Covington to study.  You can see the UNCC HERE.

Well he did really well and passed his degree in Political Sciences with flying colours.  On his return to North Carnaby Jeff started his own business and grew this successfully.  But business success was not enough for him and he dreamt of establishing an independent nation.  At the time West End was still just a county within England but he started an independence movement and in 1968 his campaign for independence was realised when the West End referendum was held and West End became its own independent sovereign state.

The town of North Carnaby was renamed Sisson in his honour and with the building of the airport so close it was appropriate that the new International Airport also took the Sisson name.  The airport code for Sisson International Airport, West End is WEN.  The first international flight to arrive at Sisson International was a NorthWest Airlines flight from Piedmont International Airport in Covington, which was also a nicely appropriate way to open the airport.

And here is a NorthWest plane that operates the West End – Covington route, with flights operating daily throughout the year.

Here are a few pictures of the first version of the airport:

Here are some of the gates – you'll notice there are no markings on the apron area.

The first version of the main terminal building.  You can see there is space for five large planes (747s here) and that there are no markings around the terminal building taxiways at all.

And here is an overview of the airport where you can see that the runway only has exits to the taxiways right at the end of the runway.

At this stage I was reasonably pleased with the airport but I knew I could make improvements!

Here's an overview of the airport after it's been re-worked.

The main differences are:
-additional exits from runway added.
-taxiway extended just south of the terminal to allow easier plane movements without congestion.
-cargo terminal re-shaped.
-taxiways to cargo area/flying club re-designed for easier movements.
-custom lots with planes on taxiways.
-markings added to arpon/gate areas.

Here's a flight just arriving from Amsterdam.  I think there's something very beautiful about KLM's colours on a plane – they really do stand out amongst a crowd in my opinion.

WestJet flight WJ0658 to Kertmezo, Liberty Islands just taxiing out to the runway.  This was a custom created lot.

This part of the terminal is used almost exclusively by WestJet.  If you look carefully you'll see that an Air France flight to Paris has sneaked in!  You can also compare this with picture 78.04 to see that taxiway markings have been added.

This Qantas flight from Balnavia has just arrived.  Here it is pulling up at the gate.  It's a 23 hour flight, so I'm sure Dave is keen to get off and stretch his legs!  (this was also a custom lot).

At this time of day many of the transatlantic flights are getting ready for take off.  Here we can see Air Canada – maybe off to Mind Scape??  There's also a Holland Amerika Luchtlijnen plane preparing for boarding to Rhenen International Airport in Nieuw Nederland and a PanAm flight to Peter Stuyvesant Airport, Niuew Amsterdam, also in Nieuw Nederland.  There are 8 flights a day between West End and Nieuw Nederland (Sebes' MD) and the flights are always popular.

This shot shows off some custom lots and also the apron markings (they took ages to get right!)
The Emirates flight is for Dubai, Royal Jordanian is to Amman and the Lufthansa flight is headed for Capporth City.

Here are three budget carriers that operate out of WEN, Atlas Jet (flying to Dusseldorf), Horizon (flying to Barcelona) and FlyBE (to Jersey).

Two WestJet B737s.  These two are headed for Carife, San Pedro and Sao Jorge, Maroanestra.

The terminal building is not big enough to accommodate all of the planes that can park at the airport.  There are 58 spots for planes to park and only 33 jetways.  So, "bus to the plane" gates play  a part at Sisson International.

Every large airport in RL has plenty of parking space.  Here is one of the long term car parks at Sisson International.

And here's an overview of the current airport together with possible expansion plans.

  The current plans are:
-Terminal 1 extension will be required when region population hits 1,500,000
-Terminal 2 extension will be required when region population hits 2,000,000
-Terminal 3 extension and second runway will be required when region population hits 3,000,000

And we'll close out this update with a route map showing all of the MDs that West End has agreed routes with.  If you'd like to see your MD added, just let me know where in the world you are and the name of the airport and I'll do the rest!

Wonderful new pictures of your re-worked airport there!
Nice work on that city! Great new update...

You weren't kidding about the odd-shaped fields outlined by trees! Square or rectangular is more efficient I guess, but not nearly as attractive! I do have one idea about the reason for irregularity but truth be told, it doesn't make much sense.

Paul, the airport is magnificent! This is an area in which I'm too inexperienced to comment, but I know enough to know it looks just great. The photos you've taken are awesome and show the extent of preplanning that went into this complex. Kudos for the parking lots BTW  - that's one area where our own environmental experiences clash more often than not. ;)

Interesting story about Jess Sission
- his town looks like a nice place to live, and with that huge airport, there must be a lot of commercial activity there. The region shot looks terrific, and it's always a good idea to leave room for expansion. That's always been one of the most difficult things for me to do.

Another great update...
Joan

panthersimcity4

Awesomeness!  ;D

I love the part with the gigantic parking lot, lol  :P

Wow Paul. This Airport is of A-quaility! I cannot believe that this is the first modular airport that you build - this prooves: you are a wonderchild (well: wonderman than)!

The first picture of that Northwest 747 is breath taking - I think it's already one of my favourites ever seen on the site... so realistic! It realy means something special to me, thanks for opening with this one..!

I can imagine that there are 8 daily flights between Nieuw Nederland and WestEnd. All Dutch Americans want to visit that great place of course. Rumours go that when the new casino strip in Regent will be opened, PanAm will add even more daily lowcost services to WEN.

IT's nice to see how you plan the airport way ahead. It's a wise thing to have a 2nd runway in different directions, so that planes can always land no matter where the storm blows from  ;).

Man looking at this updates makes we want to make an airport for Rhenen immediately! (but no time unfortunately). Thanks for showing this... take care.

Nice update. The airport looks great, and you certainly have thought out the flight routes from West End (Too bad that there goes no plane to Imaginia, but where the h#@% do I place the country on the map?). I'm lurking here often, but sometimes I take the effort to write a reply  ;) See you later!

Hi Paul!

This update was superb.
You made a wonderful airport. First I thought it is small. One runway and all that, but than great job! You even made the first plans to expand the airport. Also the cargo terminal is a one that I like too.
Custum lots, makes it even more realistic.
Also when I looked at your airport I thought you missed the whole apron thing, but than until this update you made them too. Not everybody makes these aprons. Constructing an airport in sim city is rather difficult and time consuming. You have joined the professional airport builders society!

And one more thing. That little history of the historic Jeff Sission.. man, I liked it so much.

Good job!

threestooges

Very nice airport Paul, and thanks for the info on those buildings. Very nice backstory of Sission too. I hear UNCC is an excellent institution. Well done on the airport, its expansion plans and detialing. However, the stand of lights on the runway in 78.08 seems to be blocking a taxiway. I really like the planned growth for it too. Now I'm just waiting for the population to crest 1,500,000. The overview of the area looks remarkably realistic too now that it's all filled in. Lastly, the MD connections map is a great touch. I know this is a really picky thing to ask, but if the airport ever runs another set of those maps, such as when other airports are added, ask if they could move Greenacre's location up a few pixels (it's more off the LA coast than San Diego).

One last question... which airport bits and pieces did you use to put all this together? I know there are some fine sets out there, but I haven't really looked through any of them in great detail yet.

Hope all is well.
-Matt

Fantastic updates, Paul!   &apls

I really enjoyed seeing the "build in progress" during Update 77.  Then you really went all out with Update 78!  I love the background story for Mr. Sisson (I'm sure he would be proud to hear how well he's done for himself in this other life)... and appreciate the various Covington references you've thrown in there.  The overviews are great, but I think the close up pictures really set this update apart.  I especially like the Northwest and KLM pictures (78.03 & 78.08)... they just look so realistic.

Your expansion plans look well thought out and make plenty of logical sense to me.  It will be interesting to watch this grow as time requires.  I'll be particularly curious to see how you work the access roadways around to terminals 2 and 3 when that time comes.  The final route map is an excellent finishing touch to this update.  It looks like Covington is pretty close to the right place... it might be a bit closer to Tennessee in your picture, though (hard to tell at that size, to be honest).  A little further east wouldn't hurt if you feel the need to be overly specific.  ;)

All the best, my friend...
JB

QuoteThis Qantas flight from Balnavia has just arrived.  Here it is pulling up at the gate.  It's a 23 hour flight, so I'm sure Dave is keen to get off and stretch his legs!

You kidding, I'm passed out in my seat, 23 hours of free beer  ()sick()

Great airport pics, love the close-ups and good to see Qantas making an appearance

The overall layout of the terminals, carpark, small plane area, all fit together very well. Might need another taxiway around the runway to keep the controllers stress levels down, but keep giving them coffee and they should be Ok  :)

Cheers

First up I have to apologise for the lack of updates.  West End started here on SC4D in September 2007 and this is the longest gap there has been.  It's because of a mixture of being very busy in RL and also a bit of SC4 burn-out!!  I think I just needed a bit of a break from the game.  There is quite a bit of development that I've done yet to be displayed here – so hopefully I'll get to show you some more soon.

I think the other problem is that I don't want to just do the same thing over and over again.  But I do have some plans that I am sure will keep my love of the game going – I guess I just need to feel the urge to dive back in.

David:  Thanks for your comment.

bat:  Thanks bat – I always appreciate your support.

Joan:  Sorry I've not been about much!  And thanks for your detailed and complimentary comment.

Panther:  Hehehe, yeah that parking lot is BIIIIIG!

Sebes:  Hey thanks for the big compliments.  A wonderman hey??!!  And the strip in Regent is taking shape in my mind – guess it'll be some time before it becomes a reality though.

Maarten:  Well, if ever you decide where Imaginia is on the map let me know as I'd be happy to ink it to West End.

Krizstian:  Thanks for the great comment.  Yes, the whole apron thing took many attempts and many hours!!  One thing building this airport taught me is that you will never get it right first time!

Matt:  Cheers Matt, I'm glad you liked it.  And yes those lights in 78.08, I noticed them too but not until I'd taken the pics!!  And sure, I'll move Greenacre a tad to the north.  As for the airport pieces...... I have so many installed that I'm not sure which pieces belong to which sets.  But I think the bulk of it is from the RMIP/RIMP set.  I'm sure they've been added to the LEX within the last couple of months.  I'm sure you'll be able to find them on there quite easily.

Jon:  Thanks for that Jon and glad you liked the Sisson story that you inspired!  And yes, linking up the new terminals will be a challenge for sure!!

Dave:  Free beer for 23 hours – only ever gonna be one result!  And yes, the controllers are certainly kept busy.  Rumoours are additional taxiways will be built when terminal 2 is finished.

Pat:  Cheers Pat, glad you liked it.

Derry:  Thanks Derry.  I enjoyed pulling that update together, so it's always nice when you get comments like yours.

Some random pics from the Carnaby quad today.  Some are from Sisson and the airport, the rest from Carnaby itself.

Wow Paul - the region shot is fabulous!

The finishing touch on the airport and the efficient layout of Carnaby town are very nice.

I can so imagine what you mean when you mention a SC4 burnout... let it rest for a few months and I am sure you will be picking up new projects with the same enthousiasm and superb results as you showed earlier. Talk to you!
