First of all, Congratulations to your OSITM! &apls
I don't know if this is the right place to request a map, but I'd love to have one of Linz, Austria.

Swordmaster

That's turning out to become a wonderful tutorial, Dobs! Nice and incredibly fast job on Daytona as well (the o'matic on steroids? :D)

I think I've got another sort of request (nothing too urgent though so let your machine have a beer first). Can you expand your Denver map to include Fraser, Colorado? There's a particularly interesting bit in between.

Cheers

Congratulations to the OSITM! And it's nice to see that there will be finally a english tutorial. I wrote one in german a few years ago: http://www.simforum.de/showthread.php?t=169711. At that time the GDAL integration into QGIS wasn't that good...  ;)

You might be interested in a few points, that'll make your mapping even faster, because QGIS/GDAL can do a lot more for you when you manually edit the GDAL commands:

1) You can use gdalwarp (Raster -> Projection -> Transformation) to reproject your map to UTM and rescale it to 16m per pixel via the -tr switch

2) You could use the raster calculater to rescale the map on the z-axis to prepare the map for the 16bit PNG export: (raster + 250)*10

3) And finally you can use gdal_translate to export a 16bit PNG. You'll have to use the switches -ot UInt16 and -of PNG

Another nice map  &apls

At Willy's suggestion, I'd like to ask your permission to upload our version of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky map--or maybe it would be better if I sent you the files for you to upload since you did the work of making the map and I've just redone the config.bmp. Anyway, this is what we've done:

click for full (actually half) size

Keep up the great work here!

G'Day Devotees,

Welcome to OSITM 6.

It has been another busy weekend down in the map shed, the map-o-matic is purring in the corner and Noah's map is going through a metamorphosis. The catalogue is almost compete, it needs some adjustments to the large scale maps and I have completed half of the images but it is up and running and the links are live.

Thanks Sunv, you're welcome mate. Ahh the map-o-matic can lift her skirts when she wants to.

G'Day Flatron and thank you mate. A map of Linz you say, I think that is achievable.

Thanks Willy, (just call me Lance  :D :D :D). Hmm let me see, I think that is covered with this. Cheers.

G'Day and welcome Toja, Thanks mate. I looked at your tutorial when you wrote it, google translate wasn't so good then ;<). Thanks for your Gdal tips, I haven't had time to check  them out yet.

1.The change of projection I couldn't recommend though as google's satellite images are in geographic lat and long the same as most dem. I have changed projections before then added water and what a mine field to align. I think after the second map one would be either committed or in gaol  :D :D :D.
2.The re-scaling will be dependent on the algorithm used (the best re-scaling I have seen is from a gmapper 32bit tiff into photoline). I shall check them out later today. Thanks and cheers.

G'Day Noah, Thanks mate. Yeah you can upload it but not to the stex and can you keep the original readme and just edit it to add about the config, ta.  Thanks and cheers.

Show number 6.

Rummaging around I found this courtesy of a request by Flatron, Thanks mate.

Linz is 57.344km x 57.344km.

By gee that Danube gets around.

And This Courtesy of Albertkuna, Thanks mate.

Warsaw is 65.536km x 65.536km.

River boating again, this time on the Vistula.

Last for to today is courtesy of VMIUJcadet09, Thanks mate.

Charlotte is 49.152km x 49.152km.

Named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg, wife of King George III.

This brings us to another close for now.
Thanks for looking and have a great day.

I really like the Linz and Warsaw maps. Plenty of flat space to build on.

Thank you very much!  &apls
Yeah the danube is really great, especially for motorboating ;D
or riding a bike alongside it.
And Charlotte, NC is really great. I enjoy reading kathy reichs' novels alot and charlotte seems to be a great place...

A very sad thing about the Linz map is, that in the tenth tile from the left, sixt from top, is the site of the former concentration camp of Mauthausen. It is now a memorial and when I was in year nine, we went there with school, which is obligatory for every pupil in bavaria(and i think in all of germany). One should never forget what happened there.

Belgerith

I have to say that I have been searching everywhere for an up to date tutorial to create maps. Thank you so very much. I have run into a small problem. I am trying to create a map centered around Lat: 43.59 Lon:71.33 but have run into a few small issues. I follow your steps to get the USGS data and then convert the files. One thing I have noticed though is that my files are all white for some reason, no grey scales to indicate elevation changes. Maybe it was something I am doing, I am not sure. Maybe a setting I missed when converting. Any thoughts? Thank you again for this amazing tutorial.

G'Day Devotees,

Number 7, the penultimate OSITM post.

The map-o-matic is still choggling away strongly in the corner and the tutorial is complete minus the addendums although I have used up all the post space and the final lines and pic are missing, These I will fix when I carve it off this thread into it's own. There is still enough to complete a map from go to woe.

The catalogue is completed and up to date, only the large scale maps are left to link as they require readmes I shall make some in the coming weeks and enliven them.

Thanks Serkanner, that there is plenty of. Most of Europe is flat, hell most of the world is flat ;<). cheers.

Thanks Flatron, you're welcome. That sounds cool, boating and biking. Thanks and cheers.

G'Day and welcome Belgerith, Hmm all white you say, maybe you have struck the dreaded all white terraformer bug, This I'll be covering in the next posts of the tutorial. Thanks and cheers.

The show is on!

These first two maps were courtesy of a request from Adamsanders, thanks mate.

Regina is 32.768km x 40.96km

Saskatoon is 32.768km x 40.96km

On the prairies of Saskatchewan.

The next two are the tutorial Eureka map and it's proof map. I ran the proof up this morning to check for differences, the maps are not quite cut identically (a couple of pixels difference), there is a difference of 1.2m in max elevation (not bad for my guessimate ;<)). I have a couple of ideas to work through for the water mask and will incorporate them into the tutorial if they are successful.

Eureka is 32.768km x 32.768

This is the tutorial map made with Quantum and photoline. It is available on the lex.

Eureka is 32.768km x 32.768

This is the proof map made with gmapper and photoshop. It is available on the stex.

We have come to the end of another, Til next time.

Thanks for looking and have a great day.

Great Lance, er . . . Dobs :D

Learning how to pronounce Saskatchewan as an 8 year old or whenever that was was fun. These maps look like fun, too.

Didn't know about the Kittredge map, I think I got misled by the name. I've tried stitching them together but there seems to be some trouble there. Looks like I need to take a closer look at that tutorial ;)

Cheers

G'Day Devotees,

This will be my last post during OSITM.

It has been a big month for me with 22 maps published, a tutorial and a catalogue written. I hope you have enjoyed it. Thanks to all who have stopped by over the years to have a gander and to all who have posted condoning, condemning, requesting, enquiring and sharing snippets of their lives here. It really is a great world, our beautiful Earth, Mother and nurturer to us all. Without any these pages would be nothing.

I applaud you all.  &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls Thankyou.

And to the OSITM commitee, Thankyou gents and gentesses for choosing to spotlight my small contribution to this most marvellous of games.  &apls &apls &apls &apls

G'Day Willy, yes sometimes my map names can be a little ambiguous, Oh and it will never go together. (Briskly walking away and whistling suspiciously)

But you could try this one

I caught this snippet of an interview with drunk and transposed it:

Interviewer: ...and this is the largest map?

drunk: No Cornwall is the largest map.

Interviewer: Some may dispute that.

drunk: Some may talk the talk, but choose to trip at the first opportunity when walking the walk.

Interviewer: Is this map a thousand tiler?

drunk: No.

Interviewer: Close?

drunk: Awful...

And then the transmission faded.

This map I am presenting was originally requested by Guillaume (Sciurus) at SCC. At the time I made them as a set of four maps, Here is the map you requested, Thanks mate.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is 106.496km x 155.648km.

And how big is this map? It took just over 12 hours to render and is 988 tiles.
Will I ever produce a thousand tiler? We'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for looking and thanks for sharing.
Have a great day and see you all back in my usual posi.

Cheers

Will I be able to render this map in terraformer? or do I need the new mapper?

Hey,
Long time viewer, first time requester. I'd like to request St. Louis, MO. I know it has been done a few times in the past, but the maps just aren't as clean as yours. Here's an image of the area.

Thanks!

G'Day Devotees,

By now some of you may have seen I have a pretty hacked up UI, and some have emailed me about it. I started it a few years ago but haven't done anything to it for about 18 months. I first showed a snippet of it with the drunken power shed, the custom info card did not go with the lot but was part of the UI. I wish to complete this over the coming months but do not have time to make 4 or 5 maps every week and work on it. Something has to give, so I will not be accepting any new map requests until I have uploaded the UI. No exceptions so please do not ask. I have about 20 requests I shall complete during this time also.

Last week was particularly special and some? one? Willy? may have noticed. Hmmm, maybe not. As I mentioned before OSITM I was close to 400 maps, well Luxembourg was my 400th map available to play. ;<)

G'Day Criss, Thanks mate but no it won't load into terraformer, The new mapper is a doddle though. Cheers.

G'Day Willy, Thanks mate.
Swing your partner round and round. Do-si-do and don't fall down.

G'Day Noah, Thanks mate. Did you get Siilijoki? Cheers

Thanks Serkanner, I've long forgotten just which is my favourite.

G'Day and welcome Fixedbike, You are the lucky last requestor for the time being. A map of St Louis will appear soon. thanks and cheers.

And opening first for the show and not quite making it for OSITM we have courtesy of a request by Noah, Thanks mate.

Sillijoki is 53.248km x 55.296km.

A one off for a one off MD.

Next is one for the rest of us.

Cardwell is 40.96km x 65.536km.

A little bit of tropical paradise.

These next three maps are courtesy of Dellio01, thanks mate.

Hagerstown is 32.768km x 28.672km.

Martinsburg is 32.768km x 28.672km.

Winchester is 32.768km x 28.672km.

The maps will all align although I have set different heights to map game water.

And tail end charlie this week is courtesy of a request by Phxgreenfire, Thanks mate.

Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco is 53.248km x 49.152km.

Camp Blood? Anyone!

This brings another close to another week.
Thanks for looking and have a great day.

Amazing work here, Dobs.

And I know the East Coast towns too well... those pesky line mountains and those curvy rivers.

Before I forget, Great OSITM run! I think we can all say that we learned a lot!

I look forward to the new UI.  Even if it's not something i use, it will be very interesting (for me and some others i know of) to pick at it and see how it works.
edit: after looking at the screens in your other thread, yeah i will definitely use it.
