lol, yeah, I think I've said that about the grass a while ago.  I actually say that whenever I see a lot of that grass, I don't like it very much.   :D

Jon the Swan _________ is looking Wonderful, I love how the pool area is lit up and the lite spillage i do see in the front there, It does look a tad bit weird with the lite coming up from the pool and highlighting the area by the windows...

Hello Jon,

I love the way the Swan looks at night. the pool is really lovely. With a few tweaks on the lights it looks ready in my eyes :)

The Conger is progressing very nice. I very much like the sides already. and the entrances are very nice too.

I have a few suggestions on the dome. I would indeed opt to broaden the dome so that it fills out more of the square footprint. I love the balustrade on that though. very nice. ()stsfd()

I would also make the drum underneath the dome taller. Because the large volume of the building underneath it will otherwise overcrowd and drown the dome. which would be a shame sice it is a very eyecatching part of the building.

If you broaden your dome you will alos have plenty of room to top it of with a second smaller drum and cuppola supporting a decorative windvane like the pic underneath. I hope it gives you some inspiration :) But never the less everything is better that the gaudy golden dome on the RL version. :)

Shiftred:  A fish??  That's a new one on me!  Thanks for showing that...  :D

Kevin:  Thanks, glad you like it!

GrizzlyBuilder:  I would agree about the building styles.  I'll be changing the dome over to some kind of brick or stone later today.

Jason:  *shrugs*  It will be a pretty common texture for this project, but you can keep asking me to change it as long as you realize I'll keep using it anyway!  ;)

Pat:  Thanks!  I'll make some changes for those lights and try it again.

Strech:  Thank you!  I personally love how the pool turned out... it's just the area around it that still needs a little help.  I plan to make the dome slightly larger in all directions, although I'm not so sure about adding a second tier as you've shown.  I like the look, but I don't know if it's right for this one.

Just stopping by for a moment while at work.  I'll have things to show later this afternoon or tonight.  In the meantime, I'm still taking entries for the naming contest.  So far there are three choices from Diggis, Strech, and Pat.  Talk to you later!

Can't wait to see what you do with the dome Jon...I won't quote it , but like what Strech said about raising it....after all, the "rl" builders would have wanted to show it off from ground level and back then something a tad bit ostentatious wasn't a bad thing.  Ummm an odd thought just struck me (actually all my thoughts are odd), how about an eagle with wings spread for the top of the dome?
Sometimes I go into my own little world....but it's ok, they know me there.

Duane:  Wait no longer...  An eagle would probably look pretty cool, but I don't know if that's the school's mascot yet!  :D

Here is attempt number two for the dome.  Not much more to say than that really.

I added some dormer windows too.  I think this fits better, no?

Well JB, I won't be giving you an elaborate presentation re: the name for your modular university like the other candidates did but I will give you a couple of choices, both of which I think are noble and elegant possibilities.

(1) - St. Swithins University; named for an English bishop (died 862 AD), feast day is July 15th, shrine is (or was) Winchester Cathedral before it was destroyed. I know the name from the British TV show "Doctor in the House". The show was from the early 1970's and followed the exploits of a group of medical residents at a fictional British teaching hospital called "Saint Swithin's". It was hilarious and made medicine look like so much fun that it influenced me in my decision to become a physician. I always liked the name St. Swithins. It sounds both exotic and somewhat ridiculous.

(2) - Mount Forest University; A fairly generic name. There are a couple of universities here in the Maritimes that have "Mount" as part of their names (Mount Allison University & Mount Saint Vincent University). I don't know why this is because neither university is anywhere near a mountain. It could be that "mount" has something to do with the perception of achieving higher education. In any event, the word "mount" here in the Maritimes is somewhat associated with universities and a university education. Again, I think this is a noble name for a university and is somewhat unique.

Jon, I love the new dome.....very nice, just the perfect size....hmmm are you going to paint the inside like the Cistene Chapel? ::)

I remember "Doctor in the House"  Great show, hadn't thought of it for years....it didn't influence me to me a Doctor...however I've been sick several times since then.....so maybe it influenced me to be a patient!

Ok, I'll shut up now &mmm

PS....Like the Name of St. Swithins also...or just to be PC about it....how about "Swithins Univ"

simdad1957

OK - It sounds like two votes now for St. Swithins ;) This might be the start of a successful write in campaign!!

BTW, Did you know that two of the original scriptwriters for "Doctor in the House" were John Cleese and Graham Chapman from "Monty Python". I didn't discover that until today. This would certainly explain the quirkyness and unpredictability of that show. Gotta love English humour; so self depricating and irreverent!

I guess many college campuses have a lot of mid-century brutalist structures because many exploded in enrollment during the 1950's through 1970's as a result of the GI bill and baby boom

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To be honest I love buildings from that era.

personally I would love to see some mid-century university buildings available in simcity. At least one would bring some genuinity to the game, take it away from that picturesque feel.
War Kittens !?

JBSimio

Pat:  Thanks!  I know, I know... Rhinelander has a pretty dome on the courthouse.  I'm sticking with my greenish copper look this time though.  ;)

Simdad:  Thanks for the entries... and also the background for them both!  I'm partial to one more than the other right now, but I'm not at liberty to discuss that right now.  :D

Duane:  We've actually brought on a few extra part-time employees (monkeys, of course!) to paint the interior of the "grand rotunda."  This leaves me more time to worry about the stuff that you'll actually see...  :satisfied:  ;)

Simdad:  Well, they're all write-in's at this point!  Monty Python?  Well then it's got to be funny!

Zaphod:  Later additions to this university pack will definitely have some more modern buildings in them.  Some might even be brutalist... who knows?  I get pretty bad at differentiating architectural styles past the 40's really... they all just get lumped into my personal category of "newer stuff!"   :D

OK... I have a couple things tonight.  First is another look at the Conger AC.  I got the initial textures finished... and basically wrapped up the exteriors:

I didn't put any chimneys on this time because it started to look to "busy" up on the roof.  That may still change, but we'll see.  Outside of that, I think it's time for the usual ivy and lighting marathon and that should do it!

In other news... I made a second go my lighting issues:

These are medium quality renders, by the way.  The effect still isn't quite what I was hoping for, but I think it looks pretty good as it is.  (Frankly, my mental picture of what this "should" look like is probably just ridiculous anyway!)  I still need to finish up the mechanical area and then check the front again to make sure I didn't miss something there.

Have a great evening (or morning... afternoon... or whatever you have where you live)

JB

What Pat said  I "DITTO"!   Seriously, the textures are perfect on the Conger, the green sets the whole thing off perfectly.....and the monkeys didn't do a bad job on the inside dome either ()stsfd()....wow, on both structures..

Those textures are impressive, they fit just right!  I also am enjoying the new garage nightlights on the Swan ----.  They look so urban while the Swan looks so. . . old style - I love it!

BTW, looks like this building going up just five minutes away from me.

Pat:  Thank you!  I'm glad you like it.  To be honest, I really like the idea of a stained glass dome (not for this building, but in general).  I'm just not sure how well it would look in the SC4 world.  I remember having a lot of trouble getting a decent look on the windows for Peace Church and School... and even though it looks OK, it still isn't very "realistic."  The idea has definitely been filed in my "things to maybe try some day" box.

Duane:  Thanks!  Indeed, the monkeys earned a couple extra bananas this week.  ;)

Rushman5:  Thank you!  The Swan I-really-need-to-name-it-soon is actually inspired (I love that word because it could mean anything really) by a building I saw in Fort Worth, Texas.  I think it's actually an apartment building downtown.  I do see a few similarities to what you've shown.

Baconrocky:  I noticed that one too!   :D

SC4Boy:  I think the tower has some pretty redeeming details, but I really dislike the base.

Mauricio:  Thank you!

Well... I had every hope and intention of showing you the final pictures of the CAC today, but old man winter apparently had other ideas!  This weekend is known as "Winter Reunion" here at camp.  Basically, all the kids from summer camp are invited back for a... wait for it... winter reunion.  They have some activities planned and all that good stuff, but it's mostly a pretty lowkey chance for everyone to just hang out and visit.  Then everyone was supposed to go home after lunch today.  That was before it started snowing last night.  This morning we had close to 8 inches on the ground with more still falling out of the sky.  It was also a very windy day and the drifts quickly became an issue as well.  So... basically there are 200 kids on camp right now that should have gone home but instead got snowed in.  This means that Jon had to scrounge up enough food to feed all these poor, newly homeless, children.  Normally, something like this is merely frustrating and more annoying than anything else.  In this case, our holiday shut-down "starts" today after the kids go home... meaning I have very little food on hand at the moment.  So I spent about 10 hours at work today and eventually found enough stuff to make dinner tonight... and also the needed breakfast and lunch tomorrow.  I didn't spend a whole lot of time at home, though.  Speaking of home... remember the drifting snow I mentioned?  I came home this evening to find a nifty 2 1/2 foot drift in front of my door!  Living on the east end of the lake can be fun sometimes!  :D

Wow... talk about a long story!  I swear, I have no focus whatsoever tonight.  My point is that I didn't finish the building today, but I did get the lighting done.  So here it is:

Maybe tomorrow will be better... I should probably find my shovel so I can get out of the house though.

JB
