Everyone please remember by you entering your picture in this thread you are accepting however anyone critiques your picture.  So no arguing.

I know it's pictures we are supposed to be critiquing, but while I agree no arguing, surely defending things in your picture is ok?

BTW, great idea, look forward to seeing how it pans out.

Just saw your pic, great pic.

There is something funny going on with 2 of the wharf pieces along the bottom, looks like they aren't quite leveled correctly.

I would expect there to be more traffic on the road, but sometimes thats hard to catch.

Plus, the black border on one side is a little disconcerting.

There also seems to be some serious security fencing around the bottom lots, but it doesn't close off.  Would be easy to sneak round the side. ;) (sorry, it's the crim in me coming out.)

You are right Shaun, wrong choice of words,  ;) "arguing " is now gone.  BTW, please don't forget to grade the picture out of 10. Robin

Edit:  Sorry, forgot the score.  All the stuff I mentioned is really minor, and the pic is great so it's a solid 8 (maybe 8.5  :P)

Hey Robin...not much criticism but much praise.   The three identical buildings in the upper left hand corner look out of place looking identical to each other... I've been told to download SimGoober's Industrial lots on the LEX.  ;) But anyhow I give your photo a 9. Keep up the good work Robin.  &apls

thats a great idea for a new thread!

now to your picture robin:
there is a lot variation of props trucks and warehouses what makes it look very intressting for me
the lots are also very good arranged with that transision of the road and the coastline( i hope that was understandable described)
in my eyes the scene looks so lively that i dont really notice the missing traffic on the road.
in the top left corner could be some trees or anything else on that empty green next to the road.
and now i have to say that there is one point that i totaly dont like.
the water is for a harbour to bright and with to much tranparency.
i would suggest to use one of pegs more ocean looking watermods.
in a harbour the water is normaly dirty and the ships also squirling small particals from the ground that makes water with nearly no transparency

because i absolutly dont like the water in that picture i will give you
at least -1 point for that what then makes it 8 points.
-paul

Perfect Paul, thank you very much for such a detailed post.  I will definately go back and make some changes and repost later on, Robin

Thanks Shaun (Diggis) for putting in the first official picture.

Well, let's see.....
At first glance the picture looks great.  It has a subject, the car and the picture is very nicely framed by not only the frame but the trees in the picture.  The fact that the shot is at night makes the title perfectly fitting.
Now, the only thing I don't really like about it is that it is extremely close making the grass under the bridge easily noticeable.  Now I know this is not your fault but still makes the picture less than perfect.
I don't really have any suggestions on how this picture could have been better except to try and hide the one flaw that I pointed out.

I'm going to give this picture a 8.5/10.

Robin

Actually it is my fault, as thats the underbridge light reflecting off the water I modelled there.  :P

At any rate, it still looks off and is undistinguisable.  As you can tell from my post, even I didn't know what it was.  &ops

Mmmm... I guess I will put my "critique abilities" to a test...

Lets start with the picture posted by Robin (rooker1):
I like the asteticks and the "cleaeness" of the picture. The sector reminds me on the wharehouse&port that we have here in Slovenia. The only 2 things that bothers me are: the water looks 2 clean for the "industry port/seashore/rivershore" but I dont believe you can actualy change that. The second things is that the "water-grounds" looks kindda bear, meaning that I am missing some stones in it or some algea. Regardles of those 2 things I think the picture looks fanthastic.[/color]

An now to the picture posted by Diggis:
I like the peacefulnes of the picture that is only disturbed with a lonely car crossing the bridge. The trees compliment the overal feeling. But I do have to point out same things as Robin did, and that is the grass under bridge... If that would not be there then this picture would be flawless.

It's very important that you/we all read each and every post before making our own comments on certain aspects of a picture.  Shaun (Diggis) has made a post after mine that explains. Robin  ;)

And for the last I give one of my pictures to you to judge (dont mind the words on it):

Hit me...  ;D

I would kindly point you to my reply to Robin's comment on the 'grass'.  It is in fact a reflection of the under bridge lighting on the water beneath the bridge.

On to your work:

I love the pic.  Great use of photoshop and the distortion you add to the angle of the shot is really good.  The grass between the houses seems a bit bare.  It could use some trees or playground equipment there maybe.  There also appears to be a property centre top with access into another property instead of the road.  This probably isn't your fault tho.  Good job otherwise.

Darn, forgot to score again... 9/10 (I really do love this pic  ;))
Title: Re: Critique this Picture....

Lilojame,

First off let me thank you for stopping.

Now let's look at your picture.
It comes with a very nice frame and I like the perspective you put on the picture.  All the houses fit together very nicely, the prsk between the houses look good as well, but I think there is too much of it.  Maybe the park could be between only one row of houses with a vary size and maybe a park added.  That part is all personal taste.
The one thing that I don't like is the changing of sidewalks because of the changing in residential wealth levels.  If I could suggest that you try out one of these two MODs, JRJ Sidewalks Mod by jeronij (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=36) or the one that I use, JRJ Street side Mod by jeronij as well. (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=115)  For the second one you really have to pay close attention to the readme.  ;)
Also some nice paths through the parks would be really good, maybe try these ones, SFBT Park Set low wealth (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=796), SFBT Park Set medium wealth (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=797) or SFBT Park Set high wealth (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=798) all by SFBT.
I hope this helps out.  ;)

I give this picture a 8/10.

Robin

i will add some critiques as well.
robin: love the pic and have always admired your dirty industrial work. i like how you piece together different buildings to create a new structure. the only things i notice that seem 'off' about the pic is the water mod, which has been mentioned, as well as the cranes right next to the warehouse which extends into the water. im not sure if thats your work or the creators work. i just think the cranes should be further away from the warehouse but that might be how the lot came. oh, and the triple buildings in the upper left, but i know it takes time to get the right thing to grow. 9/10.
diggis: another great pic. i wont say anything about the water reflection under the bridge  ;) but i will mention that the road looks to be very high end for this pic. it seems just a regular street would fit better, but its hard to tell without seeing the surrounding area. 8/10
lilojame:i like the angle of the pic, its an interesting perspective. nice houses as well. im not a fan of different coloured sidewalks though, but thats just my opinion. also, the pic seems a little blurry to me. 8\10
pat: its another nice pic. my only gripe with this one is the use of the large round boulders (dark grey). they just seem to stand out next to the stream/river. 8\10.

Thanks guys.  I see what you are saying about the road.  It's my favourite SAM texture, and I was going for the historic look.  Where I lived the bridges like that were expensive and high end.  ;)

Pat: Thats a nice scene.  It just seems a little incoherant to me. the 2 colours of water doesn't sit well, and as JMdude said the large grey rocks seem our of place.  I do however really like the mudflat in the uppper left corner.  6/10 for me sorry.  ;)

tough I know, but at least this way if I vote you a high one, you know I mean it
Title: Re: Critique this Picture....

Great, now I can critique pics! ::) That's what I do the best, some say :D

Firstly, for Robin (Rooker1): The fact that this picture is in HoF, doesn't mean it's perfect. The biggest disadvantage of this one is the water texture. It doesn't look right with that industrial harbour. The water in such place shouldn't be that clean and transparent ;) Next con: even though I usually love your lotting, I have to say that those in this pic are just too chaotic and... messy? to my taste. Still, that area has a lot of potential and is pretty realistic. I think I'll give this one 7/10 ;)

Shaun (Diggis): First thing: I think that this SAM texture doesn't fit in there. I think it looks better in old towns, rather than rural areas. In my opinion, the black texture (don't remember the name ::)) is the best choice ;) Also, area on the left is pretty empty. How about planting some more trees there? But the frame is good, and the text looks nice and is soooo right. I'd give it 6,5/10

Lilojame: Not a bad pic, I have to say. The worst part is the Maxis' grass lots. I think they shouldn't be used there. I think Robin has given you links to the parks that will make your area more varieted. Another con are the sidewalk textures. I think you should try this mod: Euro Asphalt Sidewalk by sap23 (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=17351) It really enhances the realism of the game, so I think it's smart to tell you about it ;) The perspective is definitely interesting, and you have used the nice font still ;) Maybe 8/10 ;)

Pat: Well, Podcast Man, I have to say I'm really impressed. Even though it's clear that the name of your MD, thus your speciality are the waterfalls, still I'm surprised it's possible to create such a level of realism. Still, I you have overused those rocks. And in my opinion there are too many different kinds of trees, which make your picture chaotic. Apart from that, it's really enjoyable to watch. ;) I'll give it 9/10

OK, since the best part is gone, let's go to the boring part:

This is my first, and the only HoF pic. Criticism (constructive of course ::)) is highly appreciated ;)

See you later!
Piotr

Pat....Nice picture and I can see that you have put alot of effort into the picture, but it really doesn't look finished.
I think the water line in the corner could be covered some how better and the water fall effect needs to be closer to the larger body of water.  I think you have used to many of the larger boulders and not mixed in the plopable water enough with the shoreline of the river.
The presentation of the picture is very good, you have the subject very nicely centered and have also framed the picture too.
I give this picture a 6.5/10.

Piotr (Sheep49).....Very good picture and that is why it made it's way into the HoF.
The only thing that sticks out for me is the tree over the dam, seems out of place and maybe you couldn't have prevented that tree, but it still doesn't really belong there.
I give this picture a 9.5/10.

Aww... excuse me please for my "bumps"... it just proves that I am under stress this week and thank you for pointing it out.

So to fix the things:

I am sorry Diggis that I missed the explanation. I understand now, what the case is. And also, since I didnt grade you pricture before I give you 9/10.
And to Robins (rooker1) picture I gave a 9/10 also.

Thank you for the very usefull links and constructive critiques you gave my shot! It will help me a lot!  ()stsfd()

So now to move to the newer pictures posted:

Pat : I find the picture pleasing but also have to agree with some critiques that were given already. I would suggest that you use less of those brownish "rocks" and maybe replace them with the "mossy" ones instead. Also, some more watre-flora at the enges would be useful to "blurr" the line. Fort this picture I give you 8/10 (and btw. I love your MD)

Sheep49 : The faiming compliments the picture nicely. I have to agree with a tree notice posted by Robin. The composition of picture looks good also. Overal I give you 9/10.

BTW. Can we post more than one picture and if we do, how much time or other pictures or other posts may pass between posting another one?

Good point, One picture per post.  Robin (Moderator)

Piotr: this shot is excellent. One thing I notice, the top part of the pic is unzoned (which for some reason always bugs me ::)) and the grid is on. ;) 9/10

Here's my (very dark ()stsfd()) pic:

If one looks closely, you can see the lights on that building are photshopped red, white and blue. ()stsfd()
Title: Re: Critique this Picture....
Post by: Lilojame on November 13, 2008, 04:33:13 PM
Travis: You get bonus points for framing the picture and bonus points on photoshoping those lights. The composition is good. For noticing anything else than that I dind the picture a bit to dark. One of the buildings is a bit to light, in my opinion, when comparing to the darkness that is obscuring the other buildings. I leave opened the posibility that my monitors lightnes/darkness is making the picture even darker than it is. I give you 8.5/10

Ok, here is another one of mine:

Btw. Robin, great idea on making this topic!
Title: Re: Critique this Picture....

Travis.... ??? very dark picture.  I like the night pictures but when they are this dark it's hard to make out anything.  You took the time to put the picture in a frame, so with that said I give this picture a 7/10, mostly based on personal taste.

Lilojame, Very nice border and the title is a nice touch.  The picture itself is very good.  The green rocks in the stream/waterfall/rapids is a good amount and not really over done, although the group of large boulders could be less.  I wish there was some more blue plopable water showing through instead of just the waterfall effect.  The cloudy mist in the air is very well done.
I'll give this picture an 8/10.

Let me take a honest look at those three pictures...

Travis: The darkness of this picture is really surprising. I wasn't ready to see that dark pic :D  OK, generally good night shot. Apart from being too dark, you said that we can see red, white and blue lights. I see red, I see blue... But I can't seem to find definite blue anywhere in your picture. Maybe I shall go to the optician $%Grinno$% Anyway, I would suggest making the frame wider than it is now ;) I'll give that pic a rating 7,5/10

Lilojame
: Far better than your last shot in my opinion. You've made a right choice using that terrain/rock textures. The first thing that bothers me are those green things in the middle of waterfall. Are those trees? If so, it's not that realistic, 'cause trees there wouldn't be so green. Too much water y'know $%Grinno$% Still, trees anywhere beside are really fitting and look gorgeus. Overall, I give this pic 8,5/10 ;)

Robin: First thing that looks really strange are those turning lines. Why? Let's take the closer look: You're using SFBT Euro Road Texture Mod, right? Then why would the turning lines on the left of the church be yellow? Looks strange to say the least. Also, if you connect that 'LE street' on the cementery on one side, you should connect it with the road on the other side too. Shadows look pretty wacky too there, but I don't think if you can do anything about it. And that white, tall building on the far left is also the source of minus points for me. Just not fits in its neighbourhood. Rating: 6/10

See you later
Piotr

EDIT: I'm anxious about what you're going to say about that one...

Thanks Robin! Noted down for my next waterfall-creations.
As for your last picture: The things that bother the eyes was already explained by Sheep49. I would say that there is also a lot of "better looking" trees out there but as far I know you didnt had the choice there. Also the picture looks a bit to sharp to me but I am not sure if it was as that when you took it or did you ps-ed to be such. The cementary itself tho looks good with those walls around it. This time I give you 7/10.

Thanks Sheep49, they actualy arent trees there but the plopable water flora (by sorchin if I am not mistaken right now).
As for you picture: I like the vivid colors of the picture. What I do find wrong is mixing the "fall" trees with "spring/summer" ones. It just doesnt looks natural in my opinion. At the right bottom corner there is a house with grey "drive in" wich I now what it is but on other hand it pops out and looks a bit strange since it is slightly 2 clean shade of gray but. In overal impression I give you 7.5/10
Title: Re: Critique this Picture....
Post by: Metropolpitan on November 14, 2008, 05:29:11 PM
Rooker1/Robin: Really interesting picture! I especially like that small gate leading to the cemetery, a nice touch.
There's just a few things that I'm picky about. Like Sheep49 said, the white and yellow lines contrast and don't go. Also, it's very crisp. A picture, like this, at least for me, should be a little bit softer maybe, but that's just me. And finally, that empty space at the top right kinda bothers me, but it's not a huge problem. Overall I really like the picture, and love how you used the Scenic Dirve kit and Cemetery kit together behind the church, very realistic.
8/10
Sheep49: Nice picture! I like the way the homes were built the way they are. Adds some diversity to a nice picture. I also like the vividty of the colors and the brightness. The only few things I don't like is that commercial building which seems out of place, and the number of pools. Other than that I really like it.
7.5/10

Well, here it goes. I'm pretty new here and I'm excited to hear what you have to say!

Hey there Metropolpitan lemme be the first to give you a warm welcome to SC4D!!! OK about your pic hmmm well lets see here to start I will give you a solid 8/10.. OK why I do think you have a score of 8 is because of the smoke coming out of the chimney's is nice touch but its too cartoonie...  The streets are perfect as well as rest of the selection of homes and some of the trees...

Now about some of the other trees are tad to green and throws off the pic in a way and kinda also gives that cartoonie look as well... Now the photoshopping is darn good here and overall I do love your pic but those 2 things just throws the balance for me...  I hope you don't see my critique as too harsh at all...........

Piotr your score from me to start off with is a 6.5... Well I do like the neighborhood but unfortunately I don't see no real focal point here in this pic to draw my immediate attention too... I see a little photoshopping to the pic and that give's it a little feel to the pic....

Robin what are you trying to do to me and give my brain an overload here lol....  Well starting off here my score to you is a 7/10... OK I wont even rehash on the shadow issue that everyone else has mentioned about but to say I agree with them on it... Also I noticed as well the connection to the street could have been made as well to complete the feel of an exit... I love those walls and overall pic here and a diffrence from a port from you!!!

I dont have a pic to present this time around but maybe one soon from me again....

Metropolpitan, let me be the second (maybe) to give you a warm wlecome to SC4D.
As for your picture, I think it must be a very cold fall morning.  Some of the trees have already lost thier leaves, but not all of them.  The color of the picture is very good as an artistic touch and I like the PS'd in smoke from the chimneys.  For the sidewalks where they change, you can always zone a one by whatever while holding the control down and zone over top of the road and the side walk will appear in the zone wealth you have choosen.   ;) The frame around the picture nicely finishes everything off.
I give this picture a 8/10.

Piotr, I have always loved Matt325's residential houses and you have put them to great use.  I don't mind the fact that there are fall trees and summer trees mixed together.  Where I live there were trees for a few weeks that stayed green and others with no leaves at all anymore.  The side walks are all the same  ;) , the only two things that would finish off everything would be a nice frame and the picture looks too crisp or sharp.
I'll give this picture 8/10.

Robin

Lilojame => Wow ! these falls are fantastic  &apls these trees you're used look really good in this environment. I give you 9/10
rooker1 => this picture is in the  HOF no ? that cemetery is very well done, next to this little church . really great buildings used, but I think the blank area in the top of the picture don't look good  &mmm anyway, I give you 8/10 Robin
Sheep49 => this picture is really nice Piotr, great use of Matt325's residential houses next to this train station , but there's no car  &mmm and these house are a bit repetitive  i give you 7.5/10
Metropolpitan => great pic, good choice of houses and great effect , the trees you used look really in this little village.  give you 7.5/10

6/10
Metropolpitan : Good pic, I like this house and Sam road. 8/10

Thanks for the critiqes guys! And especially to Robin for that sidewalk deal.

art128: Nice picture. I like it, reminds me of some eastern european city or soemthing like that. There's just a few things I don't particualrly like. For one, the underground mall around the catherdral seems a bit out of place. The church itself is beautiful, but it's just a bit odd to me. I do love those three mid-rises to the right though. They add nice dimension to the picture.
7.5/10
Earthquake: Awesome picture! I really like the sunken highway and the way you contrasted the skyscrapers with the english homes. The only thing that I don't like is that yellow thing in the middle of the Bristish terraces in the top right corner. I have no idea what it is, but I don't really care for it!
9/10

Thank you all for critiques!

Ok lets see....

Metropolpitan : I love the warmth of colors and the athmosphere in there, the streets and trees fit perfectly. The smoke is a realy nice touch but you should do it with the brush set on more transparency and maybe smudge a little more (best way to do that is if you make another layer, paint the line for smoke and then smudge and blur it but I am sure you already know that). Overal I see some very nice PS skills there and I give you 8.4/10

art128 : Nice picture there. It reminds me on cities over EU since they are a mixture of new and old. But I also have to point out that sinken mall around the chatedral... it just pops out to much and acts a bit strange but on other hand, if I use imagination, it might be some new religious order who has own sunken malls and sell religious litterature and kids. I give you 8/10

Earth quake : I like the vivid colors used in there. Special appealing are those parked cars adn the wall-work by the highway but... yes it comes a but... those blue and red buildings are a bit out of place there... try to cover them with a paper and check how much better would the picture look without them... I would give you 7.8/10

And here is a new one from me:

Lilojame: B-e-a-utiful! It make me want spring! The colors are some pretty, and I love the blur, kinda like a dream. But, the blurring is quite overbearing. I would've liked it to be a bit more sharp. And the angles are odd. It seems like the trees on the left are leaning to the right and vice-versa. Besides those two things, I love it.
8.75/10

Here's a nice mosaic from me. It's heavily PS'ed :/

art128, Very nice picture, but it has no frame/border which would be a nice finishing touch.  I'm also not big on all the different tress, especially the ones around the three triangular buildings.  All the buildings seem to fit very well, but the picture is void of any life.  I see only a handful of vehicles and no people.
I give this picture a 7.5/10

Earth quake, the colours look very saturated/colourful, almost unrealistic and yet it still looks pretty good, artistically.  The houses look very good as they are all the same or at least similiar.  The surroundings all fits well and the sunken highway looks great bordered by Buddybud's walls.  I really like the subject of the picture, SFBT buildings, and how it is off to one side right in the front.  There's not too much life in this picture, would have been really nice to see cars on the highway.  I know that Swamper77 has a few vehicle generator found HERE (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm) and there is another one HERE by mikeseith (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16257&v=1).  I do really like those diagonal parking lots.
I give this picture a 8/10.

Lilojame, WOW.....great picture, artistically.  It is very blurry, which isn't a bad thing in this case.  The colours are very nice and very fitting for this park scene.  The only thing that I think is missing is a suject.  I wish there was a fountain or a main plaza, something....even a person or two walking on the path.  Great border/frame and a good title too.
I give this picture a 9/10.

Metropolpitan, Super wow.....Great picture.  And thank you for keeping it 800 wide and making it a mosaic.  Good border/frame and a very fitting title.  Your snow effect is very well done, both the snow flakes and the snow building up on the roofs. I love the fact that you decided to do this idea with a night scene in a sky scrapper area.  Again, my biggest problem with most people's pictures is that they lack life, people and/or vehicles.   Try some of the links I provided above.  ;)
I give this picture a 9.5/10.

Robin

Thank you very much both of you! I was actualy expecting much harsher words since I personaly can find few more bumpers on my picture. ;) Oh, and Robin, if you look very very hard you will actualy notice a group of people on the path (2 are standing at the top "green" trees and one at the bottom, basicaly roughly on the middle of the picture) but the blurr hides them.  At this moment I dont have a picture but after checking in here I realy had to post my thoughts.

So Metropolpitan, this picture greatly surpases the one you posted earlier. The snowflakes are done perfectly, the lightning is perfect, the composition I also find perfect and the skyscrapers look wonderful. I also like the border you did and most definetly agree on the title. All I need now is a cup of hot chocholate and I am in heaven. This time I seriously need to give you 9.85/10

Metropolpitan: The snow effect and night it surely my favorite, also the edge of the picture gives mystical effect to it, what i didn't like was the maxis arrows in the one-side road so you get a 8/10

Lilojame: I do really like the garden and the stone? made road through it but I'm not sure what your picture represent, it doesn't say much, for my taste i think you've used too much blur effect from photoshop. 8/10

Well i'll try... its 100% from game, no photoshop were used...

Heblem, I know this project of yours very well.  Great job on it.
Now for the picture, it looks unfinished with a border/frame.  The picture itself is okay but lacks some kind of focal point.  For the amount of roads I would like to see some more traffic, it may bring the picture to life.
I give this picture a 6.5 out of 10.

Now here is another from me.

Heblem, very nice. I like the peacefulness whilest there is still life on the main road. What bother me are those blue and yellow cars repeating themself but that is not your fault. And well, there could be a frame there as Robin also pointed out. I give you 7/10.

Robin, the frame is a very nice touch and adds points to the pictures. I also like how you brought the colors down, it almost reminds me on Hitchcock from some reason and I like that. The shadows look better now, since the picture is darkened, but it still bothers me slightly. So I give you 9/10 this time.

It looks pretty good... the buildings are not crammed up, it looks very well planned and realistic... Still, i'll give you a 8.5/10 because I don't know, it seems very clean and dead to me. Maybe it's the lack of cars or the great cuantity on white in the picture... maybe adding some people may do the trick.

It's still a very good pic and IMHO I think you deserve some  &apls

earth quake>

what captured my eyes first was the image manipulating (as gimp user i wont say photoshoping :D)
it looks not real but intresting like it is painted.
the sports field lokks nice with the sourunding trees but iam somehow missing a fence.
i think there should be a chainlink fence at leats behind the goal to save the parking space from balls flying there(argh i think my english must be funny to read sometimes)
on the huge mall on the left i do not really like the roofs as iam missing some smaller details like vents and such things . the pieces are also not fitting together well often you can see little edges.
i like the busshelter although i think its a bit much of them.
in my opinion 1 or 2 would be enough and you should fill the rest with parking lots or something other of you like.
oke that were a lot of little things that iam not really happy with in that picture but they are all just small details and i really like the overall look of it.
hm.. my rating will be 7,58
i not really have an idea how to give good ratings out of 10 so just see that as nothing more than 3 irrelevantly numbers ;)

-paul

edit: i decided to put one of my own ones in here.
the image quality may not be the best as i took it out of a very compremized mosaik

Ohhh, I have a few pictures to judge, awesome.

Lilojame, The picture itself is pretty plain.  Although however nice the fields look, there is nothing else to really draw your attnetion too.  If you had zoomed in on a vehicle on the dirt road or had more farm houses in the pic, I think it would look alot better.  The frame is definately unique, and I'm trying to be polite,  ::) ;) but it draws away frame your picture instead of enhancing it.
I'm sorry for this score, but I have to give this a 5/10.

Godzillaman, Very nice picture.  I wonder if this was grown or plopped.
Anyways, I see no repetition in buildings, huge plus for me.  I like the use of parks around the buildings, not too much and not too little.  Yes the avenue are void of any cars, but also I see no people making the picture very lifeless.  Some kind of border/frame would finish off the picture very nicely.
I think this picture deserves a 8/10.

caspervg, First of all, everyone can judge and grade pictures, it's mostly just an opinion and everyones feed back will be found important to different viewers.
Your picture, nice camp ground and shameless plug  ;).  Although I have seen camp grounds that look just like this, I still find the picture very plain and I'm not too sure why.  The river would look better if you didn't have it so straight.  Maybe to add so me more life there could be a park and some boats on the water.  a nice border/frame to finish off the picture would be nice as well.
I give this picture a 7.5/10.

Earth quake, I like this picture.  I like that the focus is the park between a busy mall, school and appartment buildings.  It looks very realistic and such a place could really exist.  &apls Not all focal points need to be something large in the center of the picture, great job on this one.  The title is a good idea as well.  Now the down fall is that I think you over used the softening effect (not sure what it called).  If it wasn't so strong I would say it was a great idea.  And the lack of the finishing touch of a border/frame brings your score down to a 8.5/10.

squidi, Your lots never sieze to amaze me and looking for flaws in them will be almost impossible.  ::)  I like that the focal point of the picture is the construction site, great idea.  It looks like a very busy city, I see the people but not he vehicles.  Your chioces of custom buildings is just about perfect, not that I really have any better chioces.  The picture is extremely clear, which is a good point to me, but I just wish it was finished off with a border/frame.
I give this one 8.5/10.

I'll throw one in from me again.

thanks for the critique robin
with the traffic you are absolutly right, thats always a problem for me because people are appearing at a different time than the vehicles and i think for a really good picture i have to make one with vehicles and one with people and putting them together.
i sometimes already did that but as this one was first a mosaic i was a bit to lazy to make that for such a big  ;)
iam glad that you noticed that and put it in the critique as it is a real impotend point imo

now to your picture:
you was absolutly right with the border on my one because even before i had red your post, your fading border catched my eyes
there are 2 things in you picture that i do not really like.
first the maxis parking textures with the parking cars on it.
i am not able to imagine how someone should drive a car through the 2 line2 lines of parking cars are just to close together in my opinion.
the second thing is that building on the right, wasnt it cockatoo ones?- not sure yet-
i really like that building and it will appear in my city too someday :)
but i think it is supposed to use with buildings next to it with some kind of mall
going under the advertisement boards.
without that the boards are looking somehow strange in my eyes.
the elevated rail over the road is a very special thing on that picture what is fitting very good to the urban look.
i also like the triangular parks in front of that bright building giving it an intresting touch. that bat itself is also looking good especially with the glass parts.
at all its a good picture
and i will give you 8.375 point for it :D

paul

Love the score Paul, thanks, Robin  ;)

Thank you very much all and by the way, Robin, there was no need to be polite. ;) Next time just hit me with all the strength, I can take it.  ;D And I have to agree, the frame was way to much.
Simpson, I believe that they come with the BSC Farm Fields package....

Ok, now to the pictures.

caspervg , I give you 8/10 because I find it pleasing. Otherwise I am joining on what Robin said.

Earth quake , very nice there even if I find a picture just slightly 2 vivid in colors and I am missing some people there on the field. As overal I give you 8,5/10.

squidi, there is a nice amount of people there and I love how those shadows under the trees look as for other things I have to agree with Robin (again), I give you 8,7/10

Robin, I am sorry to say so, but I am bothered with the border you choose. If it would be just slightly smaller then it would be great. The title fits perfectly since there is a very nice amount of cars lined up. I will give you 8,5/10 this time.

And here is a new (literary) one from me:

Robin I think your pic and title are real good there but that border is a tad bit to thick maybe thin it out a little more and it would be a solid 10 but the border brings it down to a 8.5 out of 10 from me....

Karin Very lovely impression of the El Burtz Castle you got there!!! I love how the water turned out in the reflection... The border is very good here on this one... but the defussion around the castle is to much its to bright still this is a good one at a 8 out of 10 from me....

Karin (Lilojame)....
First let me say that there is no need to be sorry, it's your opinion and you are intitled to it.  ;)
Now for your picture...the picture itself is awesome, great choice of subject, that model is fantastic.  I reall ylike the terraforming job you did and it's a great idea to put the castle on the island.  I also like the border/frame it's very fitting.  My only issue is wih the amount of reflection effect that you used.  I think it's a bit too much.  Other than that great picture.
I give this one a 8/10.

Pat, great picture and I know how much work it was to cut out the cockpit to fit your picture in.  Great work.  Everyone has thier own views on how streams and waterfalls should be done, I think yours are a little lacking in that they need some more fine tunning.  Maybe hiding some of the edges on the plop rock stuff with some trees and wish that the picture was finished off with some sort of border/frame.
I give this picture a 7.5/10.

Now here is one from me.

OK so here is another one from me.....  Ohh btw I will be redoing that flight pic with your suggestions it was the first attempt ever at anything like it  :D anywho......

Rooker1, you really brought out the air pollution being caused. Good effect. 9/10

Pat, nice use of ploppable water, and blending it in with the enviornment. It looks like the only photo editing here, is the border line around. 10/10

Heres one from me, the reason I didn't give it anything special, is I wanted everyone to guess what part of the photo was real and how much of it was touched. On purpose, I left something in here, that may or may not give it away. Look at the very bottom, in the middle of the road.

Thank you Pat and Robin!

Now to my thoughts:

Pat: Picture 1: The landscape looks great and also the added layer its a great touch. You could smooth the border of it a bit tho. I give you 9,2/10
Picture 2: The rock face looks great and I agree with j-dub. For this one I give you 9,7 (no picture is perfect ;) )

Robin: Woho, wonderful! The smoky effect makes it look real, I could almost smell the smokes. The blurriness is in just right amount. The border fits perfectly and the motive is nice (although is not a nice one  :D). I do miss a title tho, somehow. I give you 9,9354/10 this time.

j-dub : One side of the road has a curb and the other has not. I am not quite sure if the road is a raised one or not, but it cuts the view on the upper left lot. I don't remember seeing the bluish lines accompanying a yellow line anywhere else but I might be mistaken. I see some life (cars and people there) so that is a plus but otherwise it just doesn't look good to me , possibly because of the resizing or similar. The bluish shadows on two buildings are kinda ok tho. As an overall I give you 3/10

Pat, you are definately one of the main people out there that use the ploppable water the most.  Your rivers are looking better and better from the day I remember you started.  The picture seems to be lacking something.  Maybe the there needs to be more trees and more different types bunch up in larger groups.  The fallens rocks look good, maybe on the corner there could be some white or grey rocks to look like they had just fallen recently.  The frame/border finishes off the picture very nicely.
I give this picture a 7.5/10.

j-dub, this thread is dedected to critiqueing pictures not guessing what you did.  So with that said, I think this is a picture of very poor quality and is lacking any real subject matter/ focal point.  It has no frame or border to finish it off.
I give this picture a 3/10.

Karin (Lilojame), fantastic picture....The overall picture is really good, the PSing cloudy effect I like.  The double border/frame and the title is a very nice added touch.  It looks like the snow effect took you a long time to add in.  The only thing I don't like the that blue around the castle, it seems to throw the picture off a little and I wish you had taken the picture up a little higher so that the tip of the far back tower was showing.
I give this picture a 9/10.

bluesinjid, nice to see you drop a picutre in here.  I really like this picture.  I can't find anything that I would change about it.  The sin reflection effect is very nice and I like how clear it is.  I just wish you had finished it off with a frame/border.
I give this picture a 8.5/10.

And here's another from me.

Simpson - just the right mix of suburban and rural, and your attention to detail is fantastic to say the least. I like the little touches like the cabin and the enclosure, and the pond is also very well done. Overall I'd give it 9.2.

rooker1 - excellent realism. I'm not sure I like the roof of the one tall building occupying nearly half the picture - perhaps scooting the perspective to the right a few tiles would give us a more eye-pleasing view. Overall I'd give it a 7.6.

bluesinjid - nice phototouching effects - although that tunnel entrance under the building looks a tad bit short. 7.4 overall.

Lilojame - WOW, very nice! Post card quality, in my opinion - the only distraction is the way the water interacts with the castle - to the naked eye it almost seems like it slopes downwards. Nevertheless a very good picture - 8.9 overall.

Here's mine - inclement weather on Runway 27L.

The_Hutt:

I have to say, very good animation!  However, one drawback is that the rain is moving, but the plane is just suspended there in midair. Makes it seem unrealistic. This other point may not be correct, but I'll say it anyway... The number of planes lining up on the taxiway might be a bit too much.

Overall score: 7.5 out of 10

Hi all,

First of all, Simpson, you made a very nice picture, you deserve a 8.5/10!

Then, I need your help in commenting this picture. I've been thinking about starting a MD of this city, and before I start, I actually want to make sure everything looks nice. So, here we go:

Please be critical, and mention me some things I can improve (If anything ;))

See you!

Simpson,  Right away I see the minimize mark, that should have been cropped out of the pic. Next I'm not a big fan of the check mark path in the middle of the field.  Would have been nicer if it began some where of importance or at least off the view of the pic.  I do how ever like the green border and the single house in the feild, very nice touch.  The plop river looks well placed as well as the flora around it.
I give this picture a 7 out of 10.

The_Hutt, ohh an animated pic.  The rain effect looks pretty good and some what believeable.  I like that you were able to catch an airplane in action.  The overall layout looks very impressive.  The few downfalls are the minimize mark not croped out, no border and the sound walls not fitting together properly and having a different base texture.  If you were to go into LE and find out the base texture of the airport set, you could easily change the base texture of the sound walls.  If you need some help in this area, drop me a PM and I could help you out.
I give this picture a 6.5 out of 10.

iamgoingtoeatyou, I know that Lilojame is having some RL situations right now, but I'm sure when she returns she will explain it all for us.

Simpson, again.  ;) Very nice picture.  The minimize mark is still showing and the mix of the two different types of water doesn't look good in my opinion.  I know that the house fits on Peg's stream but maybe some way of mixing the plop water with Peg's stream in that area would have looked better, especially if you could have hid some of it with trees.
I give this picture a 7/10.

PLT,  First let me say, please start a MD.  All MDs are welcomed here and that is the best way to get advice and improve your game.
Now for your picture....the game's back ground is showing at the top of the pic, the minimize mark should be cropped out, a border added to finish the pic off.  The grid is still on, that should be turned off as well.  For a very good pic/high score it would be better if all land was occuppied by something, in the foreground on the right I see a very large empty block.  The biuldings that you chose to plop look very good and the parks you placed around them is a nice touch too.
I give this picture a 6 out of 10.

And here is one from me.... ;)

@ PLT I would suggust that you turn off the grid and I do agree with Robin about having to remove the minimize mark... A boarder would look great on this picture as well... my score would have to be around a 6.5/10

@ Robin hmmm intresting one car train there  ;) Also the wind mill seems a tad bit out of place there in the city like that... The boarder there is pretty good there with the B&W effect!!! Overall effect of the pic is good and my score would have to be a solid 8/10

OK here is one from me,

pat,

nice pic! The shape is very well-made, it's not simple. I like the rocks surrounding it.

Suggestions: I don't think there would be trees in the top of the mountain. I dont know which lake this is, but if its the bear lake at rocky mtn. nat'l park, There wouldn't be trees on top in the snow.

Overall, 8.5/10

I would post a pic now, but i'm re-doing my plugins...hopefully next week!

The bit of snow looks out of place on the mountain, imo the land should be all snow covered or no snow at all &mmm

PLT - It's very gridded, but that's ok in a modern down-town city area. The layout is good. For a better image avoid showing the edge of the map (Photoshop it out if necessary). Switch the background grid off, and fill in the empty lots in the foreground.  6/10.

Rooker - Very interesting image with lots going on. I like the station. A few things don't look right though. The wind turbine looks very out-of-place, they're never built in the middle of towns. Also the pavement textures switch about too much.  7/10.

Pat - Nice image, very picturesque. The snow does look a bit odd on its own. A few of the trees are growing out of the rock.  8.10.

Here's my effort:

Thanks all for the critque on my last pic...  I will fix them peskie trees growing out of the mountain tops there... The caps I was trying for the snow covered look to give it the higher elevation look...

@ Vershner intresting industrial area you got there for sure... I like the use of JrJ sea walls and the pipe set there... I am wondering though the over all feel of the pic is it supposed to be a water treatment plant? Nice border around the pic! OK so my score here I would have to say 8.5/10

OK here is a newer pic from me with some new skills I was trying out on it....

@vershner: I like the different water pools you have. It looks like a treatment plant. I also love those pipes. What are they? One suggestion is use different streets. If this is one complex, i would go with the gravel.

@pat: Like the river, very non-grid. SUggestion: the waterfall seems to go up? also it's a little choppy in the lake.

Here's a pic from me: One little town, shown in my MD...

Yeah the idea was a big water treatment plant. The pipelines are a set by Herbst on the STEX (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?page=1&Keyword=herbst&view=all).
I've got two versions, one with dirt bases and one with concrete, but only the concrete one seems to be around now.

OK; I'll try my luck here, too even though I cannot give you a fresh pic since my SC4 on my wacky pc is making tons of BSOD ...

@rooker1:
Robin, I like it.
I like how you connected that train stop to the road with that small street running around a parking lot for the station. The station a bir aside of the avenue is also great.
Two things I dislike:
1) the wind power plant. I cannot remember seeing one within seddlements (and there are lots of them in Germany)
2) I don't see any bus stops around - neither at the avenue nor at the small train stop.
Replace the wind power plant with nice busstops on both sides of the avenue and/or at the small station and I would gibve 8.4/10, so it is not more than 7/10.  ;)

@Pat(lake):
I just have a problem with all these large rocks around the lake. Not only that IMHO most MM rocks are way too big but also how did they get there unless someone with too much time, money and trucks brought them there? Less would've been more there, but the overall imprssion is nice - 7,5/10  :)

@vershner:
Yeah, I do like it if someone puts effort in creating and showing the "uglier", smellier and less pittoresque parts of moden cities!
Great Job with these bassins and the small kanal (IRL I trty to avoid them as they smell like foul eggs because of all that H2S) and the pipe connecting them, just great.
Did you made these lots by yourself - especially those in the lower right corner? They are not bad but too empty for, nothing that really catches my eyes.
Some crippled trees and bushes, fences, lambposts etc to get that emptiness away a bit and you're my man!
9/10  ()stsfd()

@Pat(river):
You do know how to landscape!
The small river is sculped really nice with its swampy sided but before the waterfalls, either there is a solid barrier that creates a small lake before the falls or the whole river is sloped towards the big lake / sea IMHO.
Also, not a critique to you but in most situation I feel that the cycledog woods are too light (or maybe this is because I live(d) in the Black which Forrest is a rather "dark" forrest as its name says ...  :)
7/10

@bob56:
Overall: not bad - a rural landscape with lots of farming.
the purple fields are too ... colourful (there is no adequate translation for the German word "bunt") and that railway ...
If you had let it run through the whole map with one or two flagstops / freight stations it would have been nice. But a big bridge that crosses the river and leads only toward a loop with a small station - nah, there the engineer and railway fan in me shivers with disgust!  &mmm
6/10

Now my pic. Surprise, surprise, no skyscrapers but some railway ...  :D

so, here is mine:

(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/2434/bahnbergangds6.jpg) (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bahnbergangds6.jpg)

And a nice anekdote for any kind of critics and being critisized

An Austrian comedian ( I don't remember his name) once said: "I am open for and appreciate all kinds of critiques given they are positive ..."  :D

Edit: This picture has lost in the SC4D picture competition but went into the SFBW HoF over at www.simforum.de ...

Vershner,

All the basic elements are present and with attention to composition & a better finish would be a very high scoring image indeed 7.5

I love your picture, it has great overall continuity to the theme, that theme is obvious to any observer, using the CDK vats inland is a very ingenious idea and the pipeline layout is well thought out and well executed, the only fault is the lack of traffic which drains much of the atmosphere, this is not helped by the increased saturation and bluish hue to the image, a desaturated look with a subtle brown filter would have compounded the industrial feel in the viewers mind. As a final note to composition there are no major elements present at the key focal points using the rule of thirds. [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds) I am quite a harsh marker so don't be alarmed with my final score of 7.5.

Nardo69,

Solid effort but in need of some polishing 7.

A classic Nardo shot, easily recogniseable, I like the use of the Maxis structure for the farmhouse however the lack of yard space immediately around it loses some of the charm. I really like the use of the more obscure NAM intersection at the end of the country lane and the SAM is seamlessly integrated with the scene Interesting interpretation of the rule of thirds aligning it with the game grid (if that was intentional), however a few things catch my eye. The translucent care is a pet peeve, as the interface minimise button, both are easily fixed issues. The former with waiting a few seconds for it to vanish altogether and the latter with some simple photoshopping. While on the subject, your images are great but lack the crisp finish of a quick colour balance and contrast increase. Again your picture is also slightly oversaturated and the Palm trees present are a cardinal sin. Overall typical of your style, good subject matter and arrangement. 7.

bob56 - Nice rural scene, but I don't think it needs to be zoomed out quite so far. It would be nice to see it one zoom in so the details are more visible. At this zoom level the foam and shadows under the bridge look a bit off.
The railway loop looks unlikely. I don't think anyone would build a bridge and a railway just to service three farms. Overall 6/10.

Nardo69 - Very nice, realistic rural scene. Looks like the edge of a village. Only two small complaints: The big house should have some grounds around it. It looks a bit strange with the farmland right up against it.  Then the gardens of the small terraced houses are a bit too plain and identical. Overall 8/10.

io_bg - Great image. Almost faultless. The only improvement I could suggest would be to sort out those jagged square edges on the lower field. Either with some custom diagonal crops, or hiding them with trees and bushes. Overall 8.5/10.

I thought I should jump in here and give this thread a little kick start again.

bob56-What is in the picture is very nice...the general feel of it is not.  By this I mean, the picture should have been cropped to get rid of the back ground game.
I can only give this picture a 5/10.  Sorry.

Bernhard (Nardo69), Fantastic rural picture.  You truly are the Master of this Genre.  &apls But....I wish you had cropped the picture to remove the minimize dash and added a border of some kind to add some finishing touch.  I do love the fact that it looks like you didn't do any terraforming.  I like the slight hilly look.  There also seems to be just enough movement and life to make it look more realistic.
I give this picture a......8/10.

io_bg....hmmm, very nice picture as well.  I see the minimize dash which is a pet peev of mine when judging these pics here.  And I would always like to see the members adding a basic border or frame, to just finish the picture off.  I don't like the jagged edges on the one diagonal farm.  Some trees along here would smooth it out a little. I also think some more trees, more varying types as well, would look really nice here too, but that's just my opinion.  Even still, the picture seem a little empty, like something is missing.  There is no real flashy focal point, unless you were thinking the road system there.
 Anyways....I give this picture a 7/10.

And here's one from me so that you all can get me back now.  ;)

Hi Robin!  I bet you knew I would post here!  Nice pic, though for comments, see the responses to your first post on this thread, as it's the same picture :)  I do so love your industrial areas, and as was said earlier, and this one is uncharistically clean.  I'd give it an 8/10.

io_bg  I like the picture subject, and I really like the elevated using ground hills and then the overpass rather than the standard ground to elevated pieces with the pylons.  In addition to the diagonal farm issue that has been pointed out, the rounabout seems out of place place to me, and the texture doesn't match.  Personally, and this is nothing against you, I think that roundabouts are way over used by too many people, and are not always used appropriately.  Border and minimize dash...7/10

Here is mine.  The things I already know that are wrong with it are no border, minimize dash, the plop water/river junction is not as good as I would like it to be, and to me, and at least one other person, (hint: Robin :) ) feel like there is just something missing.  What can I add to make the picture pop?

straha....you are right.  It is the same picture, but I have fixed all the problems, I think.  ::)

As for your picture....I have given it some thought and maybe you could add just a fence line, dirt road and some cows.  ;)  I have already mentioned what I don't like about it and you made that comment above.  But what I do really like is the river animation.  Incredible done.
I give this pic an 8/10.

Straha: I really like the rural feel of your image there. I kinda reminds me of california's central coast in the rainy season. Being that, Those areas usually have lots of fences and cows around the fields. Or maybe even a small pond so the cows could drink water? But overall, a really nice picture!

And of coarse, the animated rapids DO may the picture stand out a lot more !

Robin: Your work with ports is always nice to see. There's a nice flow for the goods, from the truck to the loading dock, via forklift to the cranes to the ship. The realism seems there. It's dense, using the available land, without being so tight as to preclude movement. It may just be the harbors I'm familiar with, but I would expect to see a few plants in the water (or perhaps a bit dirtier water that obscures the bottom a bit). Also, some traffic on the roads as well as perhaps a bit of industrial variation across the way unless there's a reason for the repetition. 8/10

straha: I like that the trees are denser by the water source and that they thin out a bit as they get farther away. I also like the variety you used. Perhaps feather out the density a bit (not much though, it looks pretty good as is). Fences and such would add realism, but just to stick within the natural realm, I find it a bit odd that the river spreads out so much and then becomes rough. The upstream part must be really deep in order to handle that amount of water without having rapids (but that doesn't seem to show here) or the rapids area should look shallower. Difficult to do with the same pieces, but I think giving the upstream area a bit more visual capacity could help. Nice work though so far. 7/10

Robin: Very realistic industrial waterfront. I like the way it seems very busy, without being crowded. There are a few problems though. I think the water colour is too bright and blue. In the top-left corner there's a bit too much repetition, and the security fence in the bottom-left just stops, making it a bit pointless. Overall 8/10.

Straha: I think you could improve the picture by adding a bit more variety to the trees around the water, particularly on the left. Maybe a few dead trees, stumps, or clearings too.  If you're using Photoshop then maybe try some subtle lighting effects. Brighten one side of the valley, or add some cloud shadows. Another thing would be to add a few more animation frames so the water movement is smoother.  Currently 6.5/10.

Robin - I'll give you 8.5/10 because if some little things. Well, first the transparency of the water, It's not something great and it make your picture looking.... I don't know, but I don't really love to see what is under the sea. Anyway, you can, sure, place some floras and rocks to make it looking more realistic. there's also the lack of cars in the road. Without these two little details, nice picture !

Straha - Well, that's a pretty nice natural picture, great work with the trees floras. Also, good job with the river and the animated waterfall. the only thing I can reproach is that the picture is very empty... there's nothing except that river, I think you should put a street with some old houses to make it looking abandoned. Anyway, I'll give you 9/10.

Robin2 - Well, again it's a nice picture you made here, i really love the effect used who make it looking fantastic. Also, great choice of buildings, the only thing is that the medium wealth apartments at the right don't fit very well with the others low wealth/ghetto buildings. Anyway, I'll give you 9/10

Well, here's my picture, recently added to the HOF.

Art,

I love the pic... it's a great shot!  And I like the rail shops... but IMO it would look more realistic if the buildings were rotated 90 degrees.  It seems like they could have easily added on buildings left and right of the 4 car deep rail shop buildings... but the way they're set up in the pic, any expansion would have to be made on the back end... adding one length of the car... but necessitating an entire wall to be knocked down every time.

Here's a picture of my favorite railroad, the long-defunct Chicago Aurora and Elgin, which had its shops in Wheaton, IL.  This shot is from 1938:

Let's see if I can find a close-up... ok, here we go:

The building was deeper than it was wide, yes, but the features of the building ran parallel rather than orthogonal to the rail lines that ran into the shop.

You can see here that the peak of the roof is in line with the track rather than perpendicular to it.

I think this is more realistic... here's one of the Chicago Transit Authority shops:

I think this really shows the situation of most shops... they've got limited space, so they essentially build buildings parallel to the tracks... think of it like covering a portion of the track.

So, in your picture, it would seem logical that expansion could continue towards the bottom of the picture with those tracks being "covered" by the building... with the peak of the roof parallel to the tracks.

I hope that makes sense....  I REALLY like the look of that... just think it should be rotated 90 degrees!

Wow been a while....

Arthur - Great picture.  I like your chioce of composition in this picture, there's no wonder why it went to HoF! &apls That building in the middle is one of my favourites by marcszar and it seems to fit with the rest of the city there.  I love the fact that you were able to jam in a rail yard as well.  As for the buildingI think a lot of people would have over looked the fact that it looks like it should be turned 90 degrees to be in the same direction as the trains.....I personelly don't think it's a big deal.  I like this picture alot and I give it a 9/10!

io_bg - I like this picture as well, but I do have some personel issues with it.  I think the schoolyard needs a fence around it...you know to keep the children safe.  The park beside it look really nice but seems to be very large co mpared to what is in the area.  I would expect to see a park that large in a down town area.  I like the fact that you used the curving avenue piece but that amount of concrete/sidewalk for the area looks a little out of place.  All these fact don't neccessarily make the picture a bad one but just seems a bit off for me.  I wish the picture had a frame (a pet peev of mine) just to finish it off.  I give this picture a 7.5 out of 10.

I hope to see some more pics.....

It's been some time...

dellyking2 - First off the grid is on which is a big no no. ;) The blurr effect is sometime a nice one but I think you should have left a focal point in clear.  Problem with that is the picture is very flat....there is no focal point in the picture at all.  It is also lacking in foreground and background, which is why I call the picture very flat.  The repeditiveness of the five High Tech buildings is a down fall to the picture as well.  I would have destroyed over and over again until I got different  HT to grow.  I really don't mind much the title you added to the pic.....that is of personel choice, whether it is a fitting one or not, or in any type of letters.  That looks fine to me, although if you were in PS I would have added a border to finish off the picture.
I give this picture a 5 out of 10.

canyonjumper - I guess the focal point of the picture could be the avenue intersection, although not a very interesting one.  I don't reall like the uniformity of the picture, the four park ponds and the repeditiveness of several buildings.  Nice border and title added in is a bonus.
I'll give your picture a 6.5 out of 10.

Cyclone1001 - At first glance I was fairly pleased with the picture. The problem for me is the trees all look the same.  Try to add in a few other types for variety and I think it would make the picture come to life.  Your chioce of rivers is entirely up to you but I think plopable water would have looked a lot better.  You than could have created a slight ditch for the river and maybe use a different land bridge.  The other bridge is a nice affect with the dirt paths leading to and from it.  A border and maybe a fitting title would have finished this picture off perfectly.
I give this picture a 7.5 out of 10.

And here is one from me.  ;)

Hi Robin,
Unless you put a theme for your picture, it is difficult to critique. Not sure what its all about but seems to me that you are pulling our attention towards the water tower. So is the usage of the round frame. It could be empty or not working properly, which explain the gloominess of the surrounding area. Suggestion, you could use a square frame so that the focus is not too much on the water tower. 6/10

Hi Emgmod,
Your picture is very nice. I always like this rural scenes. My only comment is that you should work a bit on your custom lot because they look too 'ploppable'. For example, the little house could use a base lot that has sparse grass around it, and the lake could use some 'ornaments' around it, that would make them look more realistic. The train.. well that is suppose to be electric but I suppose you could have it in diesel  &idea and the grass along the rail need regular maintenance. 7/10

Hi sc-4,
Nice planning, although a bit unrealistic on the underground highway unless you can justify the technology used in its construction...sorry an engineer point of view. Suggestion - lower one more level which provide thicker ground for the buildings. Urr...?? is that an Ariane rocket blasting from the neighbours backyard? Request - could you show a finish picture? 6/10

Overall, very well done. Thats all from me, Cheers.

sc-4: Too much Maxis and looks too modular. The mixing of classes hurt it, but not as much as having 4 or 5 of the same building in a row. The little 'info' amd the 'rocket' killed it. Sorry to say, but 4/10

I think only the police and the fire stations are Maxis.
However, there's too much repetition and empty space in this picture. 6/10 from me.

Looks ok, the waterway needs to be a bit wider and deeper. You should vary the textures on the shore for better results. 8/10

emgmod,
(http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/56/pictne.jpg)

I like this picture.  It has some character....although slightly hiden, but if one looks hard enough it's there.  The plop water has a nice realistic shep to it, although I would have liked to have seen some more flora and/or rocks around the edges and maybe some more trees too.
Both of these artists have some great stuff that might make a great addition to your picture.
(Chrisadams3997 stuff) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm)
(jeroni rocks) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm)
I wish your picture had a border just to finish it off.
I'll give you a 7 out of 10.

sc-4,
(http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7895/img0028z.jpg)

It looks like a nicely home grown city.  Which at this moment in time interests me alot as that is how I am playing the game. ;) But the big problem here is that you left on the grid (turn it off by pushing the "G" button on your keyboard).  Next, the picture look unfinished.  Ungrown buildings, huge empty areas.  The terrain ballon looks bad in the picture.
Keeping all this in mind I can only give a 4 out of 10.
I hope you'll re enter this picture/area once it's completed.

ihatetacos,

Very nice first picture.  I hope you post many more.  The comments from everyone here you'll find very enlightning and will definately help you improve.
As for your picture....it looks a little plain and empty.  I like the idea of a small junk ship going up a very small river, but there needs to be more in the surroundings.  Have a look at the links I provided above.  I like the matching frame.  Overall, I think it could be better.
I'll give you a 5.5 out of 10.

Nice pic at first galnce but than I notice that there is a rial line on either side of that bridge.  A little unrealistic....in my opinion.  And the street bridge I would expect to see it in a busier city and not in a quiet rural setting, but maybe you are building this area up.  The canal leading down to the river is a nice idea but it would be nicer if you could find a way for it to empty into the river.  I have no ideas right now to suggest to you how this could be done, sorry.  I think the river bottom would look a lot better if you added some rock and flora along the edges.  The minimize mark should be editted out of the pic and a nice border would have been great to finish off the picture.
I'll give you a 6 out of 10.

Last but not the least, a picture from myself.

Robin: Excellent pic. I love uniform urban slums like those, and your area has lots of character. However, though it may have been your intention, the shot looks sterile and whatever post-production techniques you have used take away from the aforementioned character: the colors look washed out. Also, the sidewalks, especially up the right side seem barren. Finally, although it may be more of a preference, I am never a fan of maxis flora, and as such I would love to see you use c.p.'s maxis flora replacement mods. They save lots of time replacing trees from lots.

And if I'm gonna dish it out I'd better be able to take it. This is the first ever pic I've uploaded to an SC4 fansite...but don't let that deter you. I love constructive criticism.

No photoshopping of any kind...but nonetheless an image I'm quite proud of:

cubby420 - First off thank you for the critique.

Now for your picture [evil laugh.....just kidding]
A very nice picture.  Good collection of custom content.  I like the gas station on the corner and the coffee shop on the opposite.  The filler lots you added in was a very nice touch, but there seems to be no focal point and I would like to see you use a side walk modd.  Would also have been nice if you edited out the minimize button and added a frame of some sort to finish off the pic.
 I'll give you a 7.5 out of 10.

Robin and Martin: Thank you for taking the time to check out the picture. The picture really does lack a focal point, and I'll keep that in mind from now on. Also, I agree some retouching and framing would help.

Per the sidewalk mod, I do use the SFBT street tree mod, which I am quite fond of. BUT, I am still so annoyed by the wealth level sidewalk changes. If you have any suggestions as to how I could marry the benefits of the street tree mod (random parking and c.p.'s great trees) and a unified sidewalk texture I am all ears...

Ah io_bg: I love it. I'll venture an 8.5. The colors are magnificent and the reflection near the bridge is a perfect effect. However, the boats look too bright in the very dark evening water in my opinion, and as a result look "disembodied" so to speak. They appear to be floating, but not in that good "boats float" kind of way, more in a ghost kind of way (if it looks like I'm having trouble explaining this concept...its because I clearly am...sigh...).  They just pop out of the water in a distracting way.

Plus, as if one bizarre point for me wasn't enough: if I lived in the lit up residential tower to the left, I would be furious if some monolithic tanish-grey thingy built up next door, completely blocking my well paid for river/ocean vistas. Those sim property tax assessments better start coming down soon!  $%Grinno$%

I guess these struggling critiques are what you get when the pic is this good. Thank you for sharing.

@ terring7: Thank you. The pic is actually from some MD content I'm compiling for the future, with the goal to recreate a rust belt small city American feel of my youth. Lots of small, unassuming, and uneventful shopping areas and main streets stretching on into forever. But, the euro texture always tickles my fancy...so a switch may be in order anyways.  ;)

I'd give your pic an 8. It's definitely inspirational! Reach for the skies! The emptiness makes sense and all the attention is directed where it should be. However, maybe someone else can put a finger on it...it seems to be lacking something.

Ioan, I really like this scene alot.  It looks like it took you quiet some time to produce this end result.  I wish you had of taken the picture when there was more lights on though.  I think it would have given it a little more power.  I like how the bridge goes over the river and the avenue on the shore....a very nice touch.  Would have been extra nice if the picture included a little more of this, but than the top of that brownish building may have been cut off and that wouldn't have looked right either.  I really like how the buildings frame the harbor, which I would call the focal point in this case.  I do wish the water had some more texture so that the waves didn't look like they were floating.  A frame for the pic would have finished this great pic off really nicely.
With all this in mind I give this picture an 8.5 out of 10!

Terring7,  This is more of just an image with a rocket from SC4 than an actual in game pic.  Just my opinion, but never the less.  I like it and the photoshopping is well done.  The frie, smoke trail all look great.  Some more stars in certain areas may improve the picture an bit as well as a frame of some kind.  Very nice picture.
I give this one a 7 out of 10.

Here is one from me.

Nice one there, Robin.
I really like the composition of the picture, with some high wealth commercial building and that factory (that I really like because Simgoober made it after a picture taken by me..  :P ). Also, the border make it looking nice. The only thing I'm disliking in your picture is the lake of a security fences along the single track line, I think such a rail line need a security, plus because of the street ending just in front of the line.. Also if i were you I'd use another train station instead of the standard maxis one, which is - In my opinion - very ugly and unrealistic (where have you seen a station with one one quay ?  $%Grinno$% ). And, is it the gird I spot at the left empty space, between the trees ?  ;)

Anyway, I give you a 8/10 because I like all the building you used there and also because it's a very nice picture you made there Robin !

It actually looks quite real, especially with that fog effect
The only thing I can criticize would be the lack of cars on the streets - it would definitively look better with more cars ;)

BTW, what kind of building is that on the center top of your picture? I'd really like to know that :)

Very good eye Arthur.  I wouldn't have been so generous with my score as you were, but I thank you.  I used the maxis train station because I am still making my CAM city functional before I go around making it pretty. ;)  As for the grid....a very bad habit I have of playing with it on and forgetting to turn it off sometimes.

Arthur, I really like this picture....a lot.  All the buildings fit together so nicely and what a great chioce they are.  The picture is positioned very well in that the right building acts as a frame.  The picture also has a foreground, middle and background and all seem interesting enough.  I like how the canal goes through the area and the in avenue tram line works well.  Now, the only down fall I see in this picture is that there seems to be next to no life.  I can see only 9 cars, one tram and one Sim. ::) Maybe it's because the fog was just lifting. ;) The border you added is a very nice way to finish off the pic.
I give you an 8.5 out of 10. &apls

Busy day in here today.
Anyone else want to post thier pic?

Art: I believe I saw your pic previously...maybe in the best picture contest. Regardless, it is awesome. I am a fool with photoshop, so seeing seeing something really well done like this makes me smile. Everything here works for me. I'll be effusive and give it a 9.8. The canal and building choices are excellent. The subject of the shot is well framed by the other objects and the fog (which is really cool by the way). I guess I'm not in love with the ped mall tile choice, though it fits the spot well. Also, the cars in the lower left intersection seem to be overlapping a bit, but that's more of a nitpick.

I'll enter something, though I am well prepared for it to get crucified, but its a shot I am going to retake and work on some as I learn photoshop and continue adding to content for my upcoming MD, so any advice would be great. Also, if anyone knows an answer to my query about unified sidewalks and the SFBT street tree mod, that would be great too.

cubby420 your lake is cute, but the water tower doesn't fit nicely. Pegasus makes some cool water tower that fit perfectly in rural areas. 7/10 (http://www.spore.com/static/war/images/icons/ratings+1.png)

@terring7: 7/10...I really like your picture, especially the puzzle piece bridge over rail and your use of SAM in this neighborhood. However, if there is one pet peeve of mine, it is maxis palms that look horribly out of place...actually, maxi palms in general hurt my eyes. I would suggest C.P.'s palm replacement mod on the LEX. There is also a palm eliminator on the STEX, though I am not sure how it works with jeronij's sidestreet mod. Also, rarely if ever would high wealth homes be located across the street from a train station. Finally, you've got a few trees poking through your bridge, but as we all know that is hard to avoid sometimes.

Here is downtown area of a city I have working on.  This picture is my first post, but I think it is up to spec (if not perhaps decent).  I have placed trees all over in GOD mode.  I did not realize this was seen as improper, but I feel like trees go everywhere they can in a city (Not the baseball field).  Sorry about the Architect buildings... there was a year where they grew faster than the depessie's diner...

Lowkee33- Looks good, could use alot of love, but its alright. Try to demolish some building when you get a group of the same one, and also, don't leave the menu up when taking pictures. Minimize it, then press Shift-Ctrl-S to take a picture. Overall, 6.5-7/10

@ Lowkee33: It's a nice picture. I like the avenue that seems to encircle the CBD, where I live in RL has that too. For me, there's too many Maxis buildings, adding custom content would really help to improve the picture. Also there's too much building repitition for me. Furthermore, I do think there are too many trees for an urban area. One last point would be to get rid of the menu in the corner. Despite the criticisms I do like the overall feel of the picture so I'll give 5/10. Not bad at all (especially for your first post).

@wes.janson  It's very difficult, at least for me, to achieve a good small town feel.  Nevertheless, you seem to have done it well.  The fire station (I think that is what it is) fits the surroundings well, and the commecial area seems more realistic than many I've seen.  I also like the aly behind the residential, we have a lot of that here in Colorado Springs, at least in the older areas of town.  The boarder looks good as well.

Cars seem conspicously absent from your streets.  Even if it is really early in the morning, there would be at least some traffic on the streets.  I also notice a large knot of pedestrians in once spot, but none elsewehere, where are they headed?  Why are there so many of them.  The grassy areas along the road also seem a little barren, especially in front of the businesses.

I give your picture a 6.5, but it definitely has 7 or 8 potential.

@ Lowkee33 For having only a water and beach mod that's impressive. You'v put Maxis to good use and I aplaud you for that. Not many people like to play with purley maxis content and many think that maxis sucks. But youve shown that with good skill you can do alot with it. I like some of the rowhouses that grew. Its like a little ghetto.  :P I give you a 7.5/10 mostly for a great amount of effort.

My only suggestions would be:

Get rid of the Maxis trees on the school lot. They don't fit in with the surrounding ones.
Turn off the UDI icons
Get the pause line remover mod from the STEX

cubby420 - Very good looking picture.  The plop water works for me very well.  I like the rocks in the water, the water line looks great as well.  The way you plopped the forest and the rest of the flora is very well done and I can't really find any faults there.  Nature beside and industrial sector....good idea, but I also think that water tower doesn't fit very well.  I would suggest water towers from Simgoober.  I think the picture is lacking something though.  I think it really has no focal point or main idea.  I also wish you had of aded a frame of some kind to finish it off.
I'll give this picture a 6.5/10.  &apls

Terring7 - Very nice rural picture full of great details.  All the houses seem to fit together very well.  I really like the three different levels of tranist.  I say this because of the cobble stone road, the street bridge that goeover the rail and the rail way itself.  Usually one might think this would be too much in a picture, but you have made it all work together very well and it looks believable.  I do wish though that you had waited for a train to pass and got it in the pic too.  Now what I don't like.....actually hate, are those palm trees with the deciduous trees :bomb: .  Sorry but this is a personal thing for me....I hate Maxis Palm trees and I really hate when I see them in a setting like this, where I believe they don't belong.  I think you should look up swamper77's palm tree blockers found HERE (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=620) on the LEX.  And just like always, a frame finishes off the pic.
With all this said, I think this pic deserves a 7/10.

Lowkee33 - At first glance the pic looks great.  But as I look it over carefully there are a few things that I don't think looks right.  I like the ring avenue around the city, but I think you may have used too many streets in there an dnot enough roads.  I think if there is going to be a dead end, than it should a road not a street and some of your streets end pretty abruptly.  I do like that you have groups of housing the same, it looks like small community blocks.  I wish you had edited out the compass in the top left corner, the icons in the bootm left too and added a frame to finish it off.
 I give this pic a 5/10.

wes.janson - very nice picture, but almost too nice.....and clean.  It looks to me like you did this LOTting yourself, nothing wrong with it as I know how long it can take to make LOTs of ay kind.  It's just that I think I would have done things a bit different.  The row of commercial buildings should have been stores on both sides of the street with an alley way in the middle..... better this way to hide tha back entrance and garbage bins.  I do like the sidewalk modd and I think the custom content you choose is all very fitting.  You added a frame around the pic....thank you.
 I give this pic a 7.5/10. ;)

marsh - Thank you for posting this picture in here.  I think this is a damn near perfect picture! &apls The church is a great focal point in this case and fits perfectly with the surrounding buildings, which if I may add very well done in there own right and can be found HERE by mickebear (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm) for those of you that haven't had a good look before.  I find myself wondering why you didn't conitue the red brick road through the entire town.  Either way though, it still looks great, I'm just glad you can't find any black streets in there. ;) (except for that one square which is almost unnoticeable.  You have added the perfect amount of trees, I do though think that bright green tree needs to be cut down. ;) I like the flare effect and I'm so glad you finished off the pic with a border.
I am very happy to give this pic a 9.75/10, my highest score yet. &apls

Exodia the forbidden one - arrrrgghhhh You left on the pause button, didn't turn off the vehicle icons and left the grid on.  Pretty good picture otherwise.....for my taste, I think there are too many flowers, could have used some more variety of trees and maybe a thicker path to the school house with a larger clearing around it.
 I give this one a 6/10.

And now here is one from myself.

Comment about picture of Rooker1:

Good looking picture, maybe the photoshopping is too present, we can't well notice the details in the picture. The lot with train cars is quite good even if the base textures are different to the railroad up the picture. However it's strange that you have catenaries in the "garage" and not in the line up the picture; we could understand the opposite but it's just little detail.
Idem for the bush in the fences it's a little bit strange even if it was good idea.

I appreciate the parking lots and the fences between "train's garage" and road are very good.

Good picture 8/10  ;)

Thank you rooker. Im flattered.  ::)

for you now....

I like the oldy (is that a word?) look of it. The rail yard looks pretty cool. Although it is a little blurry which makes it hard to find out the details.

8.75/10

Thanks for the comments everyone.

@Marsh :  Wonderful Picture.  I can see a lot of process in there.  My biggest concern is that there appears to be no main road.  From your MD I believe that the port at the bottom left was the start of the city.  The roads start to stagger out, and then lead to the back of a church.  I think the church should face left, or at least towards the park.  9/10

@Exodia the forbidden one:  This is a pretty picture.  Grid and pause aside I am bothered that the flowers look out of place.  There are too many and their edges line up, leaving those horizontal blur lines.  The school has its own texture, and I feel not enough field space.  If I was a kid I would be stomping flowers. I say 4/10

@Rooker:  The picture looks nice, but I agree that there is too much photoshop.  I like the tree that is growing through the fence.  There appears to be a diesel engine in the catenaries.  I am a process person, and I feel like there is not much more than pre-fab lots here. 6/10

@ 976: Interesting pics, though both seem somewhat jumbled to me. Good building variation, but its just hard to tell whats going on or make out any fine details. In pic one there is some (in my opinion) ugly foundations showing in the upper-left houses and it makes their placement seem very unrealistic. I'll say a 5/10 for pic one and 6/10 for pic two, which demonstrates more extensive use of skills like network design, though I'm still not fond of the two overpass bridges in such close proximity.

Excellent pic emgmod. Not much to nit-pick here. Excellent scene and focal point. The after effect makes the whole thing seem kind of model-ish...which for whatever reason I love but others may find off putting. Some props like the van above the Air Canada plane are kind of half in-focused though. I'd give you a 9.8. A close to perfect pic given the subject matter.

976 - A very nice city scene, although I really see any kind of focal point.  I can tell that you haven't leveled the area very much, which can be a good thing or a bad thing at times.  This time I would go with a little in between.  There are few duplicate buildings that I think should be weeded out for something better.  I see some foundations on the hill side, but I also see one without that definately needs to be destroyed for one with a foundation.  I think the diagonal avenue could use some plopped diagonal commercial buildings, unless you are against plopping stuff in your city, but this is just my opinion.  And I always suggest a border of some kind to finish off the picture.
I give this picture a 7.5/10.

I won't into too much detail for your second pic.  Unbalance of tall and short buildings, edge of map is showing and no border.  I like the bridges and the RHW.
I give this one a 7.5/10.

emgmod - You have definately shown us what you have choosen as the focal point with your photo shoping technique.  I like the plane and the surrounding props used, it all brings a touch of realism and yet I still find the picture a little boring.  I'm not really sure why and I can not think of any way to really make it better.  I like the number of people in the pic, it makes it look very busy.  I think maybe the blurry effect could have been a bit less to show the other details more.
I give this pic an 8/10.

cubby420 - Nice picture....all the housing seems to fit together very nicely.  I think the canal is very fitting as well and you have done a nice job placing the roads in a believable manner.  I can see some industrial on the right hand side of the pic, maybe taking the pic a little to the rigth would have improved the pic by adding some variety of different zones.  I wish the pic had a border and that you had cropped out the minimize button.
I give this pic an 8/10.

And now one from myself.

Very nice canal image. Variety of the houses at middle of the picture is too low for my personal taste. But rowhouses are always very similar, so maybe that was one of your goal. All together 7/10.

rooker1
Very detailed landscape. I'm continuously trying to make similars, and I usually fail. I will add this into my reference images to learn from it. But I really don't understand why that thick black border was necessary. Maybe some flowers between the trees would make the image even more living. It is still 8/10.

I also post my image. I could not find regional shot in this topic, let this be the first one. It's 1087 pixels wide, please forgive this.

kodlovag : That's a brilliant region view! Maybe you could use a background mod that changes the region view.. there are some available that do that. The farms look amazing, too! The airport looks nice. Is the region finished as there is a big 'treeless' patch around a highway.
I'll give it a 7.5/10

Now for mine - Note: it is an old picture from my old CJ. I think that the junction is OK... This is before RHW 4.0, so it's not as good as it would be if I'd have created it after it was released. I'm just uploading this picture to see what everyone thinks, and I hope I can get feedback, so if I restart the CJ, this would be an area for improvement.

kodlovag your regions is really beautiful. I like the positions of the urban places, and there are plenty of trees. Only one suggestion. If i were you, i would prefer Simgoober's heliport because an airport so close to the farms may pollute them, and takes plenty of space. 7/10(http://www.spore.com/static/war/images/icons/ratings+1.png)

samerton this intersection looks crazy and a small airport next to it is dangerous, but the whole plan looks interesting. 6.5/10(http://www.spore.com/static/war/images/icons/ratings+1.png)

Just saw this over in the Competition. Very nice. The boater who lost their oars is a funny touch and adds interest to the shot. Nice choice of homes and the shingles creek by diggis is one of my favorite waterway sets. The SAM texture fits as well. Not too much to criticize here, other than the empty space at the center of the pic where it feels like my focus is being drawn. More of a nit to pick than anything else though. I'll give you a solid 9/10.

My turn. Similar to something I entered as well, but altered with a new focus and some different post-production effects.

Nice pictures guys!

Canyonjumper
- Very nice pic, and I agree the lost paddles are a nice touch--did I see a similar scene in your MD? Love the water texture and shoreline, forests, and general natural, rural feel. Sorry, don't have much to recommend. 9/10

Cubby420 - Love this village, but think I prefer the tourism board's other postcard (with 4 shots) ;)  Cool faded effect, gives it kind of a matte look. Love your abundance of trees, I can see why you don't want to give up your SFBT sidestreet mod! 9/10

And now mine: It's a night shot of a dense-ish residential area with waterfront park in the foreground.

No Photoshoping, just good old-fashioned SC4 fun! Recommendations on photoshoping (technically GIMPing for me) are welcome and encouraged, however as my ability in the area is limited.

PS, thanks to SimFox, Xylodoria, MattB325, and others for making the great bats featured here

Terring7 - I find the picture very plain.  The ramp seems out of place with the houses on the right side of the diagonal road.  The houses I personally don't like......just my opinion.  They seem too small and unfinished.
I give this picture a 5 out 10.

Jordan (canyonjumper) - Very nice picture with some comedy.  I like the oars in the water, gave me a small chuckle. :D I like the river, some more variety along the shore line with different kinds of rocks and shurbery may make that area look a little better.  Also in the back ground the trees could use some more variety...try using some dead trees as well.  The houses all fit together, the dirt shoulder road look nice too.  You have finished off the picture with a title and a border. ;)
I give your picture a 8.5 out 10.

cubby420 - Very nice picture! &apls  I really like the angle you have choosen and the focal point is perfect.  The train station fit perfectly the way you have the houses laid out around it.  The houses are a perfect chioce as well for the area....I see none that don't belong.  I like the park in front of the station and the touch of industrial buildings there too.  Not all towns are meant to be pretty, but the way you have covered up most with the perfect amount of trees makes everything seem very realistic.  The title draws the viewer in and the border is the perfect finishing touch.
I give this picture a 9.5 out 10. &apls

noahclem - I really like the over all feel of the picture.  Everything fits together very well and realistically.  I like night pictures sometimes and this shows off some great night lights by the BATter.  The biggest down fall to this picture is the Drive it icon in the top left corner, the minimize button in the bottm left corner and there is no border.
Even with that, I give this picture a 7.5 out of 10.

Great pics everyone.....keep them coming.

Long time ago that nobody wrote a message here.

Which concerns Rooker's picture.

Nice photoshopping. It seems that we are on a plane even if I am not sure it's the case. I like the angle of the picture that is not the classical angle for SC4.
Gold color is nice too, seems to be at the dusk. As you know the giraffe love the flora "greener it os better it is"  :D trees are good and well located nevertheless warning to darkest trees which are special and don't fit so good with the others.
Terrain mod is beautiful, we could add more rocks.
At the end the water sea is well chosen too maybe could you make it a little bit shiny with photoshopping.

Nice use of the Freeway Underbridge, but what is that black line between the rails? other than that the only other thing I see weird is the bridge where the textures vanish (Its not possible to add them with out doing alot of stuff) so I say 9/10

-cubby420: I like it. It's a neat, dense, little area, and the sunken rail looks like it gives the effect of trying to keep the area as quiet as possible. As dense as it is though, the number of cars in the areas seems small, both on the road, and parked. I know parking is hard to come by in denser areas, but perhaps a street side mod would add that extra level of urban-ness to things here. There may be a parking lot or two just outside the frame here, or some underground spots I'm overlooking, but those were the things that came to mind. Nice work on your new MD by the way.

Whoa!  :o  Where to start Terring7? First off, I have to ask...did you make that sidewalk mod or is their one floating around out there with power lines? Not being accustomed to simmars content (save for your work) its kind of hectic at first glance. You've made some pretty cool building choices, but if this makes any sense...the layout doesn't scream future as much as "holy hell its crowded!" A further zoom might help this problem, and would make some of the buildings look a bit less blurred. The scarecrow near the top is funny though...gave me a chuckle  :D

Overall, I would say 6/10...original but a little jumbled.

Here is my submission. A little unfocused, but I like it all the same.

I wont score the pictures, sorry.

@Rooker:  Nice picture.  I like the way that it is bent to make more depth, and the coloring is good too.  My favorite part is the shadow of the hill.

@Terring:  You certainly have your own style.  It's nice to see some fun in a picture.  I think if it were at dusk, or you had the shadows turned up it would look better.  Maybe your computer can't handle it for playing, but it's worth the wait for a nice picture.

@Cubby:  You pictures are terrific.  I don't see anything to be a jerk about on the first one.  I think you should lot the gazebo yourself as it looks a little out of place.  Maybe the flora brushes are a little too straight as well.  The photo-shopping you did makes a very nice color scheme to look at.

I have another one.  Things have come some distance from my first post :)

Wow, Wallacet, this is a fantastic first post... I've always wanted (and tried a couple of times) to build a coastal city with a beach and some high-rise hotels and R$$$ buildings around it but I think you've accomplished this task better than me. The only thing that could be improved (in my opinion) is the avenue which would look better if you replace it with a MAVE6 (found in the NWM mod). It looks more "urban".
I'd also like to ask you what is the name and where did you find that light-blue circular building at the top, I remember downloading it before but I lost it due to a HDD failure. Thanks in advance :)

And here's one of my pictures:

As for your picture, I really like your city blocks. They look very clean and organized. And the buildings are not too tall to impede the view of your docks. Nicely done. And are those PEG christmas trees I see? Very fitting for this time of year. I unfortunately cannot get the lights in my city to work, and I love night shots so much  &mmm. Keep up the good work!

Lowkee33: All around great picture. The only thing though, At the very bottom, that beach kinda' messes with other parts of the picture. Aside from that though it looks awesome. The colors, with the ocean, terrain & trees, compliment each other perfectly. The dark, deep color of the water makes it feel like a stormy day.
Overall, 9/10

wallacet: I really like the concept behind your picture. That avenue doesn't really fit in, with that slummy-looking median. As io_bg said, it would look nicer with one from the NWM. The only other thing that doesn't fit in is that Big white building, further down. It's more of a mid-west style of architecture. A glass building would fit much better.

Overall, 8/10

io_bg:Very nice picture! I love night shots and this is no exception. My only complaint is that the road is less lit up than anything else in the city.  &mmm However I don't think that is your fault. I like the way the docks are, and the boats can actually get out of the marina. They aren't built adjacent to each other like many other people do... The buildings are put in very nice. Reminds me of a city in Mass. I visit once in a while. The streets slowly going down-hill to meet at the ocean front. (I don't know if they are, but in your picture they appear like their going downhill)

Overall, 8.5/10

wallcet(2): Well aside from me having to write yet another response in-order for me to post my picture...  :P  Very nice downtown scene. The buildings all blend together very nicely, especially with the marina at the top. I don't know whether the lack of sidewalks on the avenues are a good or bad thing. It looks worst on the straight portion, but the diagonal part it doesn't give those horrific jagged edges.

Overall, 9/10

And finally, I'll post a pic.  :)

Well as a write this marsh, your pic is delivering my pic a firm ass kicking in the picture competition.  ::)  But, I'll still refrain from commenting on yours until our round is over.  :P

Wallacet: Very good pic. But, to me, its a story of two halves. The top half of the pic is brilliant, and the colors are beautiful. The marina, diagonal intersection, and whatever that blue building is all fit so perfectly, and frame the shot wonderfully. But, the grass sidewalks in the bottom half simply do not fit. Neither do the small 1x1 residential. I'd like to see you use some more plaza or filler lots to break up the area a bit. The colors are very crisp and clean, and most building choices are spot on. A cool area overall, but I'd like to see a little more central focus as well. Final verdict: an excellent pic that has a lot going for it, but could use some polish...7.5/10

Thanks everybody for their comments :)

marsh: Amazing work as always, maybe you should try to edit the mountain, the face looks too much like ice cream, but overall 9.5/10 $%Grinno$%

cubby420: Looks great, but you should try to edit with some tool to make it look like that part where that lot (the one with the street in it), has its fake street connect to the real street 9/10 :)

heres a pic

It about time someone replies here, it's time to bring this back from the dead.  :)

netmod: It's kinda plain looking to me, at least add more "life" to it. Nevertheless, I like the overall feel! 7.5/10

Here's mine..... :)

netmod...I definitely agree with Evillions8 on this one. Not enough visual interest and color. I'd give it a 5.5/10. Even a lonely gas station on the corner would really spice things up and make the pic much better.

Evillions8: Beautiful pic my friend. The contrast of the pencil towers against the banana fields is so cool. Great stuff, and colorful to boot. Plus, the trees you chose for the surrounding area are excellent and blend perfectly. I'd give you a robust 9/10.  &apls  &apls  &apls

Here is a little something from me.

Evillions8 I like the colours and the use of the pencil towers but feel that they don't quite fit in with the Bannana fields and that something bit larger and not so thin would fit in better.

Sorry about that i can't seem to be able to edit my post  ()what()

Well cubby420 The only critique i can give is to have a bit of traffic thats all.

I wasn't 100% sure where to put this but i thought that it would be best here, well i'm not quite sure about the Halifax Boxes by Spa in my city as they don't quite fit but they look like many houses that i've seen in pictures of New York

cubby420, your seaport is great. The only "oddity" is the small pier that is too close to your bridge. Isn't this a bit dangerous? ::)

cubby420 - Excellent pic, my only remark is the lack of traffic. 9/10
tankmank - Looks like a peaceful American suburb. You've caught the feeling pretty well! 8/10
unit2981 - That's pretty good for a first! However I find it quite dark. It could also be bigger ;) 6/10

Io_bg: that area is great! i really love the septopic view, it makes me feel like i was looking at it through microfilm. the only thig i would say is that it could have slightly more traffic [ even if it is a early stage of new york history] 9/10

976: Firstly, i love your transit layout. the avenue blends nicely with the sedona colored roofs in the area for some strange reason! the thing that popped out the most was the tower. its really nice, but you should have waited abut 1 half of a year for another building of that size to pop up in the area [ one giant tower always looks lonely ] 8.5/10

And now its time for mine: [ i personally think its crap, im not good at pictures]

976 : love the city but the tallest building looks out of place. 8.5/10

rstarks: I'm not a fan of the peg rivers, but made it work, yet I still suggest you use ploppable rivers. Also the flora is overused, the red ones especially. 6/10

ok I'll give it a shot, from first page on :-P

Page one:

rooker1: Like the busy look of that stretch of harbor, nice use of ploppables. Very industrial feeling, looks authentic. don't like the water texture tho. 8/10

Diggis: love the small river, nice match to the surrounding landscape. Also the bridge adds some flair, nice use of SAM. The car really adds to a cozy athmosphere. The grass or wahtever it is under the bridge gives a little minus unfortunately. 9.5/10

Lilojame (1st pic): Too blurry, other than that very well executed change in perspective. One barely notice that this isn't the way  it's supposed to look (in terms of SC4 viepoints). Also the bus stops don't fit in their grassy surroundings. What would have been of benefit were identical wealth levels all over the neighborhood.7/10

Sheep49: Looks good. Like how the high voltage lines are crossing the river. Nice photoshopping aswell. That one tree that probably came with the streetside mod is irritating. I would give it a 7 for it barely shows anything other than the river puzzle pieces, but the few it shows looks so scenic I have to stick to an 8/10

Travis: Nice picture. I like how dark the night looks and has this little brownish streak to it. Picture quality isn't too good, same for the photoshopped lighting changes. 7/10

Lilojame (2nd pic): Awesome scenery. Here the blurr doesn't hurt as much as in your first picture, but still too much imho. Love the eye for detail. 9.5/10

Page 2:

rooker1 (1st pic): I like how much calmness this picture has. it also looks very well matched in terms of buildings. Drawback is the edge of that highrise. The yellow lines don't match up to the rest of road lines unfortunately. Also the picture quality isn't too good. 6.5/10

sheep49: Nice colors. Boring and repetetive houses. I'd place that one somewhere in New Jersey or on Long Island (what would add loads of charm to the repetetiveness as this would mean it's some sort of US suburbia), if it wasn't for the european road textures and the streetside mod. If the roadwork was more american-looking, I'd given it a higher rating, but since it not I have to stick with 6/10

Metropolpitan (1st pic): Nice photoshopping, adds some live, although I must say the smoke looks unnatural. colors of the picture are well done, same accounts for the layout. The changes in the sidewalk screw it up a little. 8/10

art128: hm... too cluttered. Nice choice if buildings tho and nice use of the sunken ped mall. The cathedral is a nice touch to the area. it's also too mixed in terms of building styles. 6/10

Earth quake: I really like that one. Nice row houses, good use of the sunken highway walls. The red and blue highrises add a modern flair to the otherwise more oldschool looking area. The parked cars add some live to it. 8/10

Lilojame (1st pic): Way.Too.Blurry. Other than that nice area yet again. With a big minus for the blur a solid 7/10

Metropolpitan (2nd pic): This picture as some winterly chill to it. Like the pshopped snowflakes. You should have put more effort into the snowcovered roofs and also should have added snow to the ground. It also doesn't look blizzard to me, sorry. I like that it's a mosaic. Thinking of it as the first snow falling ahead of a blizzard and considering the lack of snow on the ground, I give it 6.5/10

Heblem: there's so much work in making this ingame and not photoshop skills. Nice layout, good lotting, good plopping. Minus for the heartless presentation. 8.5/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): same as before. don't like the frame and the change of saturation. sorry. Picture quality seems better, so it stands even with the first version. 6.5/10

Lilojame (2nd pic): doesn't even look SC4 at first glance. Just the right amount of blur (finally). Again great eye for detailing the landscape. Don't like the frame that much, therefore 8.5/10

CasperVg: It looks to sterile and not at all like an organized camping site. Also the terrain texture leaps through the ground texture between the lots and the canal. With a raise for the texturing/lotting work a 6/10

Page 3:

Earth quake: Nice colors, too blurry. A school next to the mall? Everyone must be skipping classes, right? 7/10

squidi: Nice busy part of a downtown area. Custom lots are very well executed, flawless one might say. But a few details make it hard to place that one. german police car, a us yellow cab, london underground, asian advertising on one building... better rating for a clear location, otherwide 7/10

rooker1 (1st pic): the blue frame so doesn't work for me. Also brace for some serious accidents as the ave and the road under the elevated rail are both on green light. 6/10

Lilojame (1st pic): The water is annoying. Sorry. but nice reflections on it. Also vey good eye for landscaping details. Love the castle. BIG minus for the water as it just takes too much attention at first sight. 6.5/10

PAT (1st pic): Nice idea with the copit view. Bank angle of the plane doesn't match the view, might check up on those instruments after landing ;-) Other than that, nice eye for detail, very scenic landscape. A virtual cockpit (as in from a game) would have matched better. Also, after all the photoshopping with the cockpit, I would have welcomed a little effort at where the rapids meat the open water so it looks more realistic. 8/10

rooker1: Industrial, dirty, bad satuartion adding to the scenery. 8.5/10

PAT (2nd pic): again a nice scenery. Good eye for detail, but a little bare here and there. hm... 7.5/10

j-dub: quite a small picture. The photoshopping is irritating although it's a nice try on the road. 5/10

Lilojame (2nd pic): Nice cold winter picture, well places snow. the work on the colors give it an overall oldish feeling and you did very well keeping the blurr at right values (if any, not quite sure). 9.5/10

bluesinjid: good vivid colors, nice sun reflection (even plausible looking at the given shadows) and a nice modern stretch of buildings. 7.5/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): eeew reminds me of some late 80's B movie scene, might be the headline adding to that. well designed urban housing projects. The small house in the lower right doesn't quite add to the scene. 7.5/10

Simpson (1st pic): very well done composition. Great detailing on the landscape, just the right amount of stuff. Also a nice stretch of suburban housing. The frame isn't to flashy which really adds. Too bad it shows the menu button. Cropping that out or retouching it might have given you a 10, so it's "only" 9.5/10

The_Hutt: I like the animation of pouring rain. But here comes the trouble in. No precision approach lighting, no navigational equipment for approaches (ILS, PAPI, Glideslope), also the exit-section of the taxiway doesn't match the RMIP taxiways, also lacks correct markings. Further, in such weather conditions the airport lights would be set to a brighter level to make up for worse visibility. Too bad the landing a/c is static although the rain is animated. Now there's a lot of geekery in here which I can't count fully towards the score, overall composition is well done and authentic (with some flaws in the details), 7/10

Simpson (2nd pic): Again nice scenary with great eye for detailing the rural area. I like to see Falling water in such a perfect setting for it. Don't like the frame this time, the first one was better, and same critics concerning the menu button. 8.5/10

PLT: Nice use of retaining walls. Must be a hell of a solid ground to support those towers so close to the water. The Water is boring and unrealistically shallow. Like 8-15 meters all over the place. Other than that a nice collection of towers and well arranged, too bad the entire scene screams WIP. For it is still in the works and shows good potential, let's stick with a 6/10

rooker1 (3rd pic): The frame really get's a lot of attention at first sight. Further, the windmill looks totally random there, absolutely out of place imho. Well executed connection of the parking lot at the train station, same for the sunken railroad. Great mix of houses although some look too american for the road texture to feel in the right place, the yellow cabs underlinging it. 8/10

Page 4:

PAT (1st pic): Good scene, really an eye-catcher with the lake. The snowtop of the mountain adds some spring-like flair to the scene, the trees aren't that authentic tho, decidious don't fit into an area of almost conifer-only, which seem to be quite elevated for the snowtop to show (also the trees right there feel out of place). overall 7.5/10

vershner: I like that one. Nice industrial setting. Speaking of it, I wonder which building that is with the 7 tanks on the slope? Never seen that. Anyways,  Nice touch with the canals and water reservoirs all over the place. Also great idea to use the highway walls here. Same for the pipeline. 8.5/10

PAT (2nd pic): Nice landscaping, also nice to see a bigger stretch of the area with the rapids. Don't quite like what happened where the rapids hit the sea. That and the sea itself look weird. Nice detailing along the river. The frame don't quite fit into the scene. 7/10

bob56: Nice farmland setting. I like the river cutting through it. Don't like the rural villages and that biiig rail running through the scene. Landscape looks too bare aswell, could have used some more work to look good. Also the farms are too close to the steep river bank. 5.5/10

Nardo69: well composed scene. I like the railway. And I like the farmland, although I must say the tractor looks out of place there. The other side of the canal is well done aswell. Not quite sure where in the world to place this, could be france, northern italy, some lower area of the alps but also further towards the east... but in either location it would look authentic (mentally deleting the yellow cab from the scene). Drawbacks are the menu button and the palms and maaaybe the translucent car aswell. sorry. 7.5/10

io_bg: looks more like a network showcase than an actual scene. hm. I like the use of network here, I also like the farmland. I don't like the bareness of the landscape, the ground around the trees looks too empty. Nice touch with that pond. Jagged edges sadly reduce the score. 6/10

rooker1 (1st pic): Since you posted that picture before, I stick with the score. 8/10

straha: the animation is an eyecatcher, well done. Don't like the empty landscape behind the trees around the river. Minus for the menu button. Nice placement of trees tho, feels authentic. 7/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): urban housing. I like the color management here. Nice use of RTMT. The school fits in right. Some photoshopping to give the parking lots a usable look would have been great. 8/10

Page 5:

art128: artistic image. I love the foggy scene. Nice placement of lots here. The menu button floating there is a no-go, but the frame is well executed. 8/10

io_bg: nice use of both curved puzzle pieces and the respective sidewalks. Too hard a transition to the neighboring lots. Also the playground that close to 2 busy avenues feels wrong, especially since the scool or whatever isn't fenced. 7/10

rooker 1 (1st pic): A large railyard between some downtown area and some New York-ish residential area. nice touch with the canals. The strech of highrishes is an interesting alignment. Maybe you should increase the business of the area. Almost no cars, no trains at all (except the few on the one railyard lot). Overall 8/10

dellyking2: hm... the blur is really on the edge. The ferry dock feels out of place and not at all connected to the "world" (ie streets). Also that small bump along the road on the right is totally off. everything else is level, you could have even that one aswell. Other that it's a nice HT industrial area, I like the embankment. The park in the upper left corner looks random. Modern, but random. And I don't like how random some trees pop out through concrete here and there. Worst of all, grid is on. 5/10

canyonjumper: Nice intersection. I like the parks around it and the building style of small shops and all. And the frame is nice. Too bad the traffic lights are on the wrong side of the road. 7.5/10

Cyclone1001: Fine rural setting. I like the small ped bridge in the middle of nowhere. Nicely connected with major mode paths. I don't like the difference in markins of the bridge and the road tho, but nice detailing along the small river. 7.5/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): The frame is too heavy. But the scene is awesome. I like how the focus is on the parked car but the water tower pops into it. And I really like the colors, just a streak of color. 8/10

emgmod: rural scene. Uhm... to bare around the pond, also the rail could use some detailing. I'm not that much into trains, but isn't this an electricity powered train? if so, the scene lacks power lines. I really really like the house, all alone there like a retreat for stressed sims... or some guido man-hater living far of everything human ^^ 7/10

sc4: Well, no. A lot of things feel random. Too much mixture in buildings, a small single family here, a highrise there. Also too many changes in wealth. The 2 underground highways seem not just overpowered, but also technically questionable. Too random plopping of park-ish lots. And the empty area is too... empty. Not to mention the tooltip and the visible grid. And it's not fully developped either. Sorry, no more than 4/10

ihatetacos: Why that? I love them. Anyways, nice shot. The boatsman must be a hell of a navigator to get thrugh that narrow passage. I kike the detailing around the canal, looks authentic, altho repetetive. an occasional bush or rock wouldn't have hurt here. 7.5/10

Page 6:

Cyclone1001: 2 single rail bridges sandwiching a road bridge. Nice layout. Quite a wide river to span. I don't see a point in the canal on the upper edge tho. Landscaping could use some more heart. 7/10

rooker1 (1st pic): Too many translucent cars. Nice use of single rail. the w2w houses look devastated and way too dirty compared to the others. Nice frame. 8/10

cubby420: Ncie scene. I don't like the changes in sidewalks textures tho. The Starbucks looks out of place aswell, a more modern building would look better. Nice use of RTMT. Translucent cars and the menu button pull the score, same for that weird camper attachement for pickup trucks floating pointlessly along the road. 6.5/10

io_bg: Great sunset scene. I don't like how some buildings have nightlight and others don't, especially that tall structure closest to the water really jumps out without any lights. Also don't like the ships having no lighting at all and the water riffle effect around the bridge looks out of place aswell. Darn menu button (that's really a pet peeve of mine). 6.5/10

Terring7: booooooring. Sorry. Since it leaves some room for interpretation, 2/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): don't like the frame. Too heavy. It also feels like the train station is wrongly aligned. The smoke on the lower left hurts the scene. I also doubt someone wants to sit in the backyard of that restaurant. A good eye might even spot that the grid is on... 8/10

art128: Nice fog. And a nice frame. I really like how the tops of the buildings leap out of the fog. Could use some more life to it (as in cars and peds) 7/10

cubby420: Nice pond, I like the use of landscaping details like flowers, bushes, trees, rocks. Look authentic. The water tower is an eye catcher. Nice industrial touch with that warehouse or whatever it is. Maybe a bit too much buses in the scene. 8/10

Terring7: Although it's a nice addition, I absolutely don't like the elevated road. Adding to this, the different markings make it worse. Nice touch with the SAM, but the rail station feels out of place aswell. The eagle is totally off. I doubt one would see an eagle in such a location. Also, a lot of trees mess with the elevated road and speaking of trees, the palms feel out of place. 4.5/10

Lowkee33: Terrible. Starts off with the Menu showing. absolute no-go. The houses look totally random, I don't see no downtown at all, only thing hinting here is the avenue going all around it. Way too many roads in the scene. The market feels out of place, same counts for the hospital and the college. Then I spot some industry on the right edge, totally random placement imho. I have a hard time finding any other concept than a downtown-ish area surrounded by an avenue. Really lacks a lot of heart. 3.5/10

Page 7:

wes.janson: overall very well composed scene of a small town CBD. Really like the road textures. Same for the assortment of houses and shops. That tower adds some medieval heritage to the area. I like the allyways and the fences. nice detail how the road crossings are conncted to the sidewalk. What it misses is some paved access from the lots to the road. Speaking of road, it lacks traffic. And the cluster of peds feels totally wrong. bottom line, it all looks like a hell of a lot of lot-editor work. 9/10

marsh: Nice looking mediterranean town. That russian cathedral looks out of place, same for that modern shopping center thingy. Both screw up the oldschool flair. And the sun reflection is too present. 8/10

Exodia the forbidden one: no. no. no. The flowers lie too heavy. all the menu things (pause frame, menu button, the UDI markers, grid!!!) make it even worse. The scool house looks totally random in that scene, the path leading to it looks more like a layer of rocks than an actual path. 3/10

rooker1 (1st pic): great frame, nice old look. hard to spot details tho, but just looking at it I can't see anything off. 9/10

976: no terrain conforming layout, no slope mod whatsoever. Too much mixing of buildings. Nice sunken highway tho it might need some more room between adjecent houses. In general, picture 2 has more to it than picture one, so I end up with averaging both entries to a 5/10

emgmod: Good looking terminal. I might have given it a just a little blur round the Air Canada jet so the edges don't look to hard compared to the blurred area. 6.5/10

cubby 420: very  well composed area. I like the NWM, I like the appartment buildings. The canal adds athmosphere. I wouldn't have placed the railshed there. And that darn menu button. eeew. 8/10

rooker1 (2nd pic): wow. awesome detailing, nice old rail bridge, love the waterfall. 9.5/10

kodlovag: nice overview shot. The airport looks good from that point of view, I like how scattered the small towns are. Well placed farmland with good eye for details like different shapes and windbreakers like trees. the river winds itself quite nicely. 7.5/10

samerton: the airstrip feels wrong. nice use of RHW/MIS although a little over the edge if you'd ask me. The ploppable water could use more work, also the houses feel random, same for the small stretch of NWM up left. 6/10

Page8:

Terring 7: Probably your best so far, although all these modern Sim Mars houses are totally off. Also the skatepark, playground and tennis field look out of place. That grass area with the 12 trees lacks some heart. overall 6.5/10

canyonjumper: Great suburban setting. I like the rive, although I must say half the cajacs would have looked better. Nice eye for detailing the river banks, the houses look great. I wonder what the cops are doing in the lower left. I might have welcomed a different SAM here. 8/10

cubby420 (1st pic): Well composed, nice detailing, good photoshopping. 9/10

noahclem: picture quality does harm. Also, albeit nice looking, the roundabout makes no sense at all. Menu button and UDI zot screw it up. And I don't quite like all the small houses in between the highrises. 6/10

rooker1: Great landscape, nice sepia effect, horrible frame. I'm really sorry, but just for the frame's sake it's 6/10

cubby420 (2nd pic): except for the grass under the bridge I don't spot anything negative. I would get rid of that one single family home, in favor of another appartment complex. 8.5/10

Terring7: the streetside mod doesn't match the futuristic buildings. Same for the cars. The lot with the scarecrow is out of place aswell. 4/10

cubby420 (3rd pic): great landscaping details. I really like the setup of the sports area. 8.5/10

lowkee33: great improvement to your first picture. Well done landscaping, nice eye for details. Only thing is the menu button, better completely editing it out than just blackening it. 8/10

wallacet: this has some Miami to it. The water park behind the rollercoasters feels out of place tho. 7/10

io_bg: except for the menu button a nice waterfront /pier area. 7/10

Page 9:

wallacet: the ped crossings totally distort the view, amplified by the white car turning. The 2 small houses next to the avenue feel out of place. Nice waterfront. 7/10

marsh: simply wow. great details. if it wasn't for the ugly rock texture, this would be a perfect 10, but like this, it's 9.5/10

cubby420: nice photoshopping, the neighborhood has an authentic feel to it. Nice touch with the before/after comparison. 8.5/10

netmod: the plain grass area feel too artificial. I also don't like how the street intersects the road. Nice use of power poles and fences, also the farm looks cool. 7/10

Evillions8: this has some pacific flair. asian to be precise. I like how the plantation lies right behind some residential highrises. The menu button stands out too much next to the black frame. 7.5/10

cubby420: nice harbor. The tunnel entry looks weird with the transition from road to street. Same critics concerning the menu button as in Evillions8's pic. What's also a little off is the mirrored view. messes with the turning lanes and the writing on the harbor building. I'm a fan of mirrored views, but they have to be chosen carefully to look authentic. 7.5/10

tankmank: thats a lotta row houses. Nice use of streetside mod, too hard a transition from one style of row houses to the other. Also the trees cutting into the houses are bad. and my all-time pet peeve the menu button. 7/10

unit2981: too dark, too small, can't see anything. what I can see is that the industrial embankment doesn't fit the residential area above. The windmills are out of place. 5/10

io_bg: nice sepia. except for the modern cars it really looks 1917. But not New York. A Polizei-Porsche 911 in NYC in 1917? Also the road texture looks more european. 7.5/10

976 (2nd pic): This has a favela-ish look to it. I don't like how busy the roads and streets are, but the avenue is more or less empty. That tower next to the Ikea is quite an eyecatcher, but imho not authentic for such a favela-ish neighborhood. Same for the single family homes just above the Ikea. But overall a nice looking picture, flaws are in the details. 6.5/10

rstarks: could you please re-upload it?

netmod: nice night-scene. I like the fireworks, altho they look to artificial. Picture quality could be better. Menu button :-( ... 7/10

976 (2nd pic): again a nice favela-ish area. Looks more authentic than the first one. I like the small river winding through, altho the area round the avenue bridge could look better with some other approach. 7.5/10

wow that was quite some work ^^

after scrolling through 9 pages I must say I've seen great pictures. But I've also seen less good pictures with loads of potential.
But there's just too many pictures with minor technical flaws that are easily prevented. Grid lines, UDI icons, menu button, pause frame... all things that require a second to get rid of and really pull the score down imho. Especially the menu button has come to my attention as it is persistant throughout all pages. But since there's some folks who think of getting rid of it I had to consider it in evaluating the score, to the disadvatage of some good shots that lost a point or a half due to this small annoyance.

now I got a question, to the moderators or whoever knows the answer: why are some of the pictures not showing at all, but once accessing the source-code to extract the respective url and using it, I can see them?

Cheers GMT for all those critiques! That's what I call dedication.

@Flatron, that's a very nice small town! I really like your choices of buildings. The W2W commercial and residentials really go well together. That combined with the type of housing and the brick schools, it makes for a really nice overall theme. I also quite like the red brick sidewalks you are using. However, there are a few things I think you should consider before taking a pic, and that's getting rid of the UDI bubble and dezone the undeveloped zones. Picture quality could be a little better too. 7.5/10

Here's my entry. I'm kind of new to using the mayor mode flora along the river banks. Lets see what you guys think...

Excellent picutre. Well composed with the small creek with the pedestrian bridge. The golf course is one of the best i've ever seen (as with Shadow Assassin's one) and is very realistic. the use of Mayor Mod ploppable path instead of lotted one is a plus. Although, I would have used another set of trees instead of these! Anyway givin' you a 8/10 !

Well, they're both very neat & professional-looking. As for the first one, I like how you included a couple of older style buildings among the modern skyscrapers. There's still plenty of green and open space, which adds to the pic's atmosphere. All I recommend is to avoid using the "no avenue sidewalk textures" mod. (It's more of a pet peeve, really. The avenues look rather.... naked without them.) 9/10.

Now than, onto the second picture. I like how all the buildings and the plazas share a ruddy colour scheme in common. But what about that parking garage in the lower left? That, to me, threw off the uniformity. Altho' I'm sure it still looks great ingame, so you might not need to do anything about it. 8/10.

Oh yes, I meant to ask someone about that mod. It's bugging me so much. I hate having no textures on my sidewalks... It's been like that for the last year I think. About the parking garage, well it's the only one I have that holds the amount of cars I need, even though it throws everything off.

Time for answers to G.M.T. :)

booooooring

The picture with the space shuttle is symbolic, as you can see with the "Ad astra per aspera :)". Simcity 4, thanks to it's community, it's not all about cities anymore.

I absolutely don't like the elevated road.

I can't remember if F.L.U.P.s was available then. Level crossing? No way, too dangerous for the cars.

the rail station feels out of place aswell.

This city was one of the first cities with custom made stuff. Now I can build elevated railroad with elevated rail station and some nice decoration.

The eagle is totally off. I doubt one would see an eagle in such a location.

Sorry, I love birds and I would never kill an eagle just to take a picture...

Also, a lot of trees mess with the elevated road

Not my fault ;D ;D

the palms feel out of place

They are genetic engineered palms, that can live even in snow covered mountains ;D
Seriously, I replaced later the Maxis palms with another tree. Now I use them only in beaches.

Probably your best so far

Thank you :) , but you should check my new cities as well. I can't show them however, they are so extreme that the whole Simcity 4 community will ban me :D :D

although all these modern Sim Mars houses are totally off.

We are somewhere into the future, so what did you expect? Boring modern homes?

Also the skatepark, playground and tennis field look out of place.

Yeap, I'll agree, out of space

That grass area with the 12 trees lacks some heart.

Oh, this? It was a part of a 6x6 lot. I made some experiments with lot sizes for a future project. This lot was experimental, so I didn't made it as nice as I like it.

the streetside mod doesn't match the futuristic buildings.

It was the only street side mod that fit better in my cities. I'll download it later again.

Same for the cars.

I tried to make models for Simcity 4, both cars and buildings, but I gave up. Until I or somebody else makes futuristic cars like this...

..., I'll keep those cars. Don't blame me for that.

The lot with the scarecrow is out of place aswell.

The scarecrow is in place. Urban agriculture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_agriculture). Never hear it? &mmm

TmiguelT: Very nice picture :)&apls . I don't like however those huge power lines. Sure it's realistic, we have power lines next to highways here in Greece as well, but it's very ugly. A good idea is to use underground power lines (http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=434), they don't disturbed the environment. Using trees as sound barriers is a very nice idea, but I think that the right side doesn't have enough trees.
Sorry, no rates from me anymore. Rating kills the creativity. Can't wait to see more of your pictures

Brand new picture for me ;D

I don't even use power. Cheats is what I use for power and water. However your city is nice and green. Thats a nice touch.I agre however that the powerlines are an ugly touch. Its distracting compaired to the rest of the picture and is the first thing your eyes notice. I think you could've done without them. Here in Colorado, the only way to get power the isolated areas is by tall power poles. I live near an alley with power lines running above it. Not attractive. &mmm

TmiguelT: I do something similar in a lot fo my cities, but they look like the Diagonal Intersection pylons, not the straight ones. They just look a little too heavy duty for a straight stretch.
Terring7: Me like. Kind of makes me think of Command and Conquer: Tiberium Sun.

Hi Terring  :)
I think it would be good to use the axis to form along one of its skyline. The first building in the series should be highly varied, always higher than the other and then back to the pyramid less high buildings.
In the second row behind the building will have only half as high as the first row. Then again, higher buildings in the third row. This results in a staircase, and in another view, the buildings, the pattern of a frequency wave.  $%#Ninj2

Important I think the building is to mix more. Several times the same building does not look good next to each other.  &Thk/(

I live near Denver and spend quite a bit of time there.  You're pictures are obviously not a building by building copy of the city, but they capture the vibe nicely.  The first one reminds me of the CBD near the convention center.  I even see what looks like the judicial complex towards the top of the picture.  The second picture is almost certainly LoDo near Coors Field and the MCA.

I agree with Risu that the lack of sidewalks detracts from it, though I actually think the parking garage juxtaposes old and new which is totally reminiscent of LoDo.  Also the single family homes don't really fit the downtown area.  I'm not sure if the light rail is Stout or California, but you should experiment a little with the "tram on road" pieces.

I understand how hard replications are, and Denver's CBD is on a diagonal grid with a bunch of seriously goofy intersections along Broadway and Colfax.  I'm going to hold off on giving a numeric score until I see it with sidewalks though. :)

Very impressive picture.
How come your transporation networks don't have night lights?  And why does some of the transit lines go throught the buildings?  Especially bottom left corner of your pic.
You have a good variety of models.  And I'm very happy to see that not every building is over powering and very tall.  The two midrise section you have made look very realistic.  I like that you were able to incorporate some diagonal transit too.  The asian bats as well as the few other models add some nice light colors.  Would be nice if there were some more, but that is just me.
I wish you had remembered to remove the minimize button and maybe finished off the pic with some sort of frame.
I would give this picture a solid 8.5 out of 10.

I would love to see a day pic of the same area if possible....please.
Great work! &apls

I suggest you get rid of those trees in the first pic or don't use them. The LODs on them are not the best and there are a lot better trees out there that are HD. As for using MMPs, try not to over do it with any one in particular. Most of them blend together fairly well for a great end result. Also try not to use them too perfectly, any sort of line curved or straight looks out of place.
As for the industrial areas, try adding some fences and garbage on the lots. Add some trees and bushes in between areas.

What you have so far is fairly good. With some practise I'm sure you'll get it. And the best way to even more advice is to actually start and MD in"The Recently Published" section.

Good luck and I hope I was able to help.

What you have so far is fairly good. With some practise I'm sure you'll get it. And the best way to even more advice is to actually start and MD in"The Recently Published" section.

Good luck and I hope I was able to help.
Robin

Robin,

First of all thanks for your response you pointed out alot of helpful ideas.  I will redo the area tonight and post some a couple screen shots to see if I have improved upon my work a bit.

Hi, I want your thoughts about this city, should I leave the normal highway or use RHW and get rid of those buildings at the edge of the city tile? That will be a downtown área.

should I leave the normal highway or use RHW

On this question you'll hear many people around these boards prefer RHW. However, RHW is not that easy to handle as a sunken network. If you're gonna leave the MHW you may want to try Project Symphony, too.

Cheers

In a dense downtown core, the tighter packed MHW (and Project Symphony version of it) seem to work best for visually approximating the premium that space carries with it. RHW is nice, but I'd keep the MHW if you're happy with it. I know for downtown Los Angeles it gets very tightly packed in terms of lane width, etc. The sunken setup you have here looks quite like that.

Nice downtown.  It could use some more parking.  My big criticism is the highway.  I won't tell you to use MHW or RHW, that is your choice (I use both in my city), but the bridges going over the highway should really be leveled and not have such outrageous slopes.  Sink you highway and then your roads can cross over more gradually.

Again, the rest of the downtown looks really good!

Yeah I'd recommend that as well MHW is much better suited for denser cities. I find RHW requires a large amount of space which isn't realistic in a city setting.

Well there’s not much to criticise really, but you asked us to, so ...

In terms of the city itself, I always like to see some heavy rail coming into the port area (but these could be nearby anyway) and I think runway could have a bit more open space between it and the nearby roads and buildings.

In terms of the picture I spy a tiny little bit of the menu bar down in the bottom corner and if you are able too (not that I could do it myself!), adding some weather effects (clouds, sun, rain, waves/whitecaps on the water) in Photoshop or similar would a nice extra bit of atmosphere.

But it is a great picture ‘as is’ - as are all your MD pics too. Always a pleasure to see your cities.

Hm, even if I try to be a good critic (a tough bastard, sharpened, impartial but merciless?) I feel a bit helpless on this job.

This would be a city - but there are so many in RL too - where I would get lost. A nice grown town but where are the landmarks, the points of reference to help me for orientation? If I was a tourist in the north and I would ask for the way to the city center, how to describe in an easy way? Where is the city center? Is it the roundabout on the left? My verdict probably would be: nice but anonymous. But, well, compared to so many cities one could say: that's realistic.

In Heidelberg for many years there was an adults shop quite in front of a church. And the adults shop wasn't allowed to have a sign towards the church or to advertise in front, so the sign was only readable when approaching the church but was blacked out for those leaving the church  - I think for not distracting the worshipers?

Funny thing is - all tourist guides would point out this feature, so at the end - restricted advertisment gave even more advertisement. The discretion in public caused even more attention.

On the other hand - when you are asked about the 'Jesuitenkirche' in Heidelberg and all you know to say: once there was an adult shop in front of it, this isn't really flattering. A church being a landmark because of the adult shop in front of it, it's a little absurd.

Why am I telling this?

Maybe to explain - it is something quite complex what makes up those points of reference in a city. As for many tourists visiting Heidelberg it was 'that church with the adult shop in front' - which strangely they could easily remember, much easier than the name of the church.

Strange thing.

I guess - most sc4 player make structure with the network layout, making parts, districts etc. by using main streets like dividers/separators of different parts. But one of the philosophical more interesting discoveries is: structure is made by meaning.

In the city where you live you may have completely different 'landmarks' than a tourist. Because there are certain buildings or structures or parks they have a meaning to you. The hospital where my daughter was born ... it became a more important point in the city than that church every tourist knows about.

It would be an interesting challenge to make up a city in sc4 with meanings. A city where certain buildings have a story - a city telling something.

The best lotters, the best batters - if you have a close look on what they do, imho, they do exactly this. They do things with a story, with a meaning. Structure isn't only geometry, only numerical proportions. They express something with their work.

Well and that - with many words - is my ungiving critics: that's what I miss on your city - like some people, very beautiful to watch, to look at, but boring to have dinner with them. Only talking about work and money, nothing funny, nothing interersting. A little bit, I guess, your city reminds me of those people. A lack of personality perhaps?

The only thing I would have to say is that I don't find retaining walls necessary when the slope is that slight. You could either cover it with MMPs, or flatten it a bit and use small 1x1 parks (those from FrankU for instance: https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/30548-franku-dutch-parks/ (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/30548-franku-dutch-parks/)).

The rest is great though  ;)

A very good picture, but since you've posted it here, I would like some more detailing on the shores, maybe some stones and driftwood?

This picture has to be the most Simcity picture I've seen recently. It's like a mayor was thinking about that to build at this area and decided to build everything! Let's some nice residential zones. Small homes? Apartment buildings? Let's build both of them. Let's have a nice avenue, some roads with smooth curves... oh, let's build an elevated railroad as well. Parks? Farms? Lakes? Malls? Bring them on! Let's build some industries as well, for variety and because why not. What do you mean "no room for skyscrapers"? I want some skyscrapers! We're not building just an ordinary city, gentlemen. We're going to celebrate variety, celebrate creativity, celebrate fun and puzzle solving. We're going to celebrate Simcity and it's community!

In other words, 10/10 for the concept

A detail of a city I'm playing with. Tell me what you think :)

There's something fresh and unique about this picture - there are some structures I haven't seen before and don't know from where they come from. An old sc4 player like me is always attracted by those things not seen a hundred times before but surprising, catching eyes.

Yes that's it - your city has something surprising. A little bit futuristc, modern. It's inspiring for story telling - I imagine a special agent working undercover in this city hunting for illegal drugs selling androids. Or something like this.

PLEASE MORE PICS, Terring7!!!"
