Title: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: jeronij on November 05, 2006, 07:34:17 AM
Please, post here all the bugs and/or technical issues you may find while using the site´s features. Be as clear as possible when explaining the problem, and post a pic when possible, to help us diagnose and solve the problem.

H! Bat!

hmm, have you tried to change the image format. This shouldn't be a problem if your image is jpeg or gif though...

take care,

Is there a way to flag a PM as read ?
I can only erase the PM. and even if I read the PM it still count in the 'My Messages' (number)
Or I may just have not seen the button  ::)

Hi to all,

bat, in your profile there is no custom pic. Make sure you uploaded to the "forums profile" and not to the "site profile"

wngn, once you read a message is set as read. In your profile window (to the left) you will always see how many messages you do have in your inbox, read or unread. If you have some unread one, the it will be shown in the same window.

This isn't really a problem, but something really cool about this forum that I just noticed! (I am a bit slow :D )
Namely that it doesn't matter how Wide your reply area is. This means that you more or less can post images as wide as you want, and you can just use the built in scroll to view the whole image/text area.

Example is the "Topic: Using the site´s codes - A Must Read !!!!" by Jeronij in the "New Members" area.

This is something that really bugs me about ST. And is solved very well in the SC4Devotion forums!
GOOD JOB!

take care,

I've just get into jeroni thread showing peirares pictures

unfortunatly I can't easily navigate thru them as the horizontal scrolling bar is per post and not a general one

I'm running in 1024x768. so basically I can only see the left part of the first pic, if I want to see the right part, I need to scroll down, find the horizontal bar for the post I'm reading, scroll the bar to the right, then scroll back to the first pic  etc..

Can something can be done about that ?

I think I have the same problem:

at 1280 x 960 pxl.

Hope you can solved the problem quickly!
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...

ok it seems that jeroni has work on the solution, it is better as now the scrollbar is attached to the pic  &apls

but, yes there is a little but, don't know if it is fixeable easily, I'm just nitpicking, so don't bother too much :)

I still can only see part of the pic when scrolling. I mean the general post layout is fixed. and I still have the white column and the column for the poster info. in 1024x768 the real content of the post start around 25% from the left screen border. so I somehow lost 25% of my screen to see the pic.

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: bat on November 11, 2006, 04:27:17 AM
I see the scrollbar under each picture, too!
Thanks for this solution. Now I can see the whole picture, even if it costs some time more than without using the scrollbar.
Perhaps you can fix this problem without scrollbars, or is this impossible?

Another bug:

The post-counter and topic-counter don't work on some "main"-topics!

Hello to all,

As you have noticed, I got a partial solution for the scrollbars issue. I am waiting to see if the forums support team can also give me a solution to completely remove the scrollbars. With a scrollbar under each pic it is impossible to post a mosaic  &mmm . If they can not be removed completely, I´ll leave them as they originally were. (one single scrollbar for the whole post)

Anyway, I have also a partial solution for scrolling without having to go to the bottom of the post, (when there is a  unique scrollbar ). You can clik on a picture and use the keyboard arrows to scroll the pic. You dont need to go to search the scrollbar at the end of the post.

About this 25% of screen somehow "lost" it happens because the forums are a independent software integrated into the main site.  This 25% of space is occupied by: Main site menu and Forum member profile.

I can set the forums to be unwraped, that is, they will show as a completely stand alone software. I can program this, but I have no idea how to modify the forums to add a link to let you go back to the main site´s page ( where the downloads, news and City Journals will be). After some testing yesterday, I noticed that the only way to go back in that situation, is to logout from the forums  ??? . This is not a valid solution actually.

Well, the only thing I could conveniently solve these last days, was adding some new smilies, like the sly, ninja, kiss, and some others. I hope you find them useful  ;)

 &kiss &mmm &nj &prt &blush &ops &dd %wrd &sly

Oh, I also added some tutorials to the Nem Members area section, related to use the BBC/HTML tags.

Hello again, well some of the problems reported has been solved.  The forums with child forums do show now the number of topics and post.
On the other hand, the problem with the scrollbars and the images has not been solved yet. I have to say I am getting a great help from the Simple Machines Foruns Support members, and they are really nice and helpful, we are on the right way...it is just a matter of time....

OK, lets see if we can fix all the forums related issues, and can start with other sections, like the downloads one  ;)
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: jeronij on November 12, 2006, 08:49:34 AM
Oh, well, today is a good day  !!!

Finally, and thanks to the unpayable help from the Simple Machines Forum support team, the scrollbars have been removed. I do also think this is the best way, so we can post big pictures, and everybody will be able to see them.

ExilE, i am sorry because you liked the scrollbars option.

On the other hand, I would strongly suggest to the 1024 or less screen owners, to buy a new one  ;D . I am using a 1900x1200 one and it is simply fantastic   &dance

Ok, enough joke, I think that all the issues posted here have been solved, so I can try to go with the next sections for the site...Let me know if you find some other issues or problems in the forums as soon as possible.

Wounagaine, I see you are using netscape. Could this be the reason ?¿. The forums should be compatible with any browser, but after the changes I am making....well....who knows... :-\

Can you try with IE ?¿. Or clean you netscape cache..I dont know..This is the first site I try to maintain and I try my best  ;)

I try with IE and everything is ok

I also try from my office PC, using FF, and everything was ok

So don't bother, I can live with that :)

The texts in the "Upload Test"-area are slided! They cut with the frames or you can not see the whole texts (words).
I refer on the text "Description" and "Image 01" / "Image 02" in this area!

Hope you can solve this problem soon!

Hi to all,

is someone else having this graphic issue ?¿

bat, which browser and at what resolution are you looking that page ?¿

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: TheTeaCat on November 26, 2006, 06:03:59 AM
Hi Jeronij

Yes i have the same graphic error. thought it was just because i did not have the window enlarged.

I use firefox with resolution at 1027 x768.

copy of post wasn't sure where to put it
Ok Have sent a file to you.

But I did not see any confirmation notice. It went straight to the upload screen again. Was monitoring my bandwidth at the same time and to be honest I didn't notice any activity there either.

There's my two cents for the moment, did you get the file if not I shall try again.

 :satisfied:

Edit
tried first file again and says name already exists so I guess you got it. Tried with a second it seems to be there too but there is no way of knowing unless you tried to send the same thing a second time. Then you get the warning. Hope this helps  &mmm

Things I have noticed are

         1. That since the upload test came online the sites clock seems to have gained 12 hours.

         2. The link on the forums home page for new messages  does not show them.

I don't know if this is related or not, &mmm

I got the same problems with theupload form as TheTeaCat and bat on firefox and Opera, but not Internet explorer 7 on resolution 1280x1024. I also tried testing out with diffrent resolutions and it didn't make any diffrence.

So by the looks of it only works correctly with Internet Explorer whatever the resolution.

Interstingly i did another little test, i used the The web browser in google earth and it displayed fine on there. However I dont think it is using internet explorer because if i open it in a another window it opens in firefox and displays incorrectly again

It sounds weird. Can you try to clear you internet temporary files and try again ?¿. If it does not work, I guesss you use Firefox, so I will have to search some information about this issue.

Hello again bat, I have installed Firefox in my computer and I have tested the page. I can see all the menus and submenus without problems.

However I had to delete the cookie imported from IExplorer to be able to logout and login again, so I was able to see all the menu options.

In fact I am writing this message from Firefox  ;D

EDIT: I have also slightly modified the upload form, so you can see it better in Firefox, but I can not make it look like EXACTLY the same in both, IE and FF, so I´ll leave it the way it is, until the new file exchange arrives  ;)

Jeroni ... I think there is a potential serious issue in your page design ... or something else is at play ... your pages are not streaming down ... they sit on the server untill all content is in and then BAM it pops into the browser. Once you site gets busy that is what will kill your server.

It is almost as if your pages are streaming into a table .... and that will not come to the browser untill everything is there ... take a look on the BSC Board and on ST ... the forum page streams and the pictures render to the browser and not to the host server.

Thanks for solving this "bug"!

Here's the next:

there stands at the new members-box on November that we had 90 new members at this month and new members on December 110. That are for me 200 new members in total,
but in the general statistic stands that we have only 96 members...

Hope you can also solve this bug!

Edit:
The thread (48+63=111 and not 102) and post (1644+1426=3070 and not 3025) number also don't square (in the two statistics) ;)
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: jeronij on December 21, 2006, 05:14:55 AM
HI bat and TTC,

it seems the stats dont take account of the members deletions  ;) . I guess the diference in the number of members is due to this.

Also the numbers dont square because there are threads and posts which are private, and it seems sometimes are being used for the stats and sometimes not. Anyway, that is nothing that I can solve myself, so I should ask for help to the forums creators. Do you think is really worth it ?¿

bat, I think I will have to change your label to SC4Devotion Bugs Nightmare ....or something like this ;)

We are working through the whole site slowly and step by step ... first to get an overview of what is cooking and then we will start cleaning up ... the screwed numbers in the stats is also due to failed or crashed registrations that did not bridge properly with Joomla.

I can't log in on the home page, but the forums are fine. I notice that the forums have had the header/side removed, which is a good thing, as it kind of cluttered it up too much... though, you might need to put in a link for the BSCLEX somewhere.

In the gallery section (http://sc4devotion.com/gallery/index.php), City is missing a "y" and the placeholder text is still in the box below that.  Nitpicking, I know, but you have a great site here. Also, is it possible for other members to create galleries? I saw that there is only one (with 9 albums), but could not find a link to create a new one.

sanantonio, the thing is that I have the galleries a bit abandoned... :-[
I have some plans for them but in a medium/long term. In the meantime they are a simple pictures depot, where I started uploading Sculpting Columbia River.
The members can not create galleries at the moment. Give me some months, and or they will be removed, or they will be in active use  ;) $%Grinno$%

Some, but not all, pictures do not show up for me, instead I get a white box with a red X through it.  Typically, this is because there is an issue with the site hosting the pictures being unavailable.  However, it's not consistent and it's not always the same pictures or the same messages.  As an example, in Badsim's mayor diary, I can see the first picture and I would assume all the pictures are hosted at the same site.  But because no one else seems to be saying anything, I'm wondering if it's just me.

I have to wait for a really long time for the pictures to load, if I don't wait and start scrolling I get the boxes.  Are you waiting long enough Vicki? ::)

Vic, you really don't know me well enough to know me as well as you do.   ;)

Jeronij, I'm using IE 6 and it's true what my friend FanG said.  I usually scroll down before the page fully loads.  I'll try exercising a little bit of patience and waiting to see if that makes a difference.  I will let you know.

edit:  Vic, you were right.  I guess my patience isn't quite fine-tuned.  Jeronij, as it turns out, the pictures don't show unless they all load first.  thanks !!

The LEX link should be under your user menu, on the link column. There is not actually a link in the header, but it will come soon.
It's doing it again.  I logged in and there's no link. I even backspaced over the url that had defaulted to sc4devotion.com and typed in www.sc4devotion.com and still nothing.  Do you think it could be the result of logging in from someplace other than the home page?

edit: I just logged out and logged back in from the main page and the links are there.  If this is not a known issue, jeronij, will you please test it to see if my theory is correct?  thank you!

Yes, Jeronij, I do use multiple computers.  But it seems to me that when I use the login link from the forums, like now, I do not see the user menus in the sidebar.  However, when I log out and then log in properly from the home page, then I see the menus.  (I'll test the next time I use a different computer, tho, because I'm not positive)

Somtimes the forums show wrapped ( and you can see the left menu) and sometimes unwrapped ( you can not see the left menu). If this is the problem, then you should go to the home page (www.sc4devotion.com) and you should be able to see them. We are working in this issue, and we will fix this asap.
Actually you can access the LEX from the forums always using the link near your username at the top of the forums screen. I hope this helps until we can fix this issue.

I have tried to cause the missing pictures problem. With IE7 this does not happen, because the page does not show until it is loaded. So you have to be patient with some pages. And I can not reproduce the problem.
I have tried with FF last version, and with that browser, the page loads before the pics, but I can scroll down and the pics keep loading.  %confuso
Maybe it has something to see with the site where the pictures are hosted. If you can tell me an specific page here where that happens, I will keep searching.

Hi Jeronij,

I have just entered SC4D again and I do not see the links to LEX anymore. Is this because I installed MS Internet Explorer 7 yesterday?

Where is it?

This sounds like the same problem I had a few days ago. The side bar was still present but the three links for "Upload a file", "User Profile" and "BSC LEX" were gone, ie only the user menu from the side bar but the rest of the bar was still there. This was occurring both in FF and IE.

Two screenshots are here if they will be of any use in solving the problem (they are of the same page at the same time, but one is scrolled further down than the other to show the whole sidebar:

LEX Link Problem View 1 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v154/sam71/LEX_problem_1.jpg)

LEX Link Problem View 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v154/sam71/LEX_problem_2.jpg)

I have it back now, but from the post above I think all that may have been required was to log out and back in again. Unfortunately in trying to fix it I installed two new versions of Firefox, and now have a lot more problems (and not just with sc4d) than I was originally trying to fix.  :'(

I wonder if FF has a downgrade available. &ops

Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the correct location for this, but here goes...   Yesterday I was on the LEX and D/Led something then clicked on a link to D/L a dependency and it took me to a screen the said I wasn't authorized and had to login (which I would have done but there was no place to log in again).  I closed that window and looked for the file I needed manually but ...., well, you know, kinda a bummer if the links don't work right, especially for people like me who have short attention spans or bad memories (or both!)  In case you need the file it was Jeronij's lovely rural walls and I needed the dependency file, although for the life of I can't recall if it was the cool walls or the warm walls who's link I clicked on....

The bug is that some files appear not to have images  and links as illustrated in the 2 images below as they are 1024x768 they are links.

Thanks Sam.

Today I am in the office and came back on LEX as I should. At home I will try to log out and log in again, see if that helps.
Probably it has to do with installing a new internet engine (whether FF, MS or any other).

Hello!  Um...I have a quick question.  When I try and make a signature that uses exactly 300 characters, it gets rid of the last four and says I have four left.  For a long time, my signature said "Masochist's M".  I had to change it a bit, but I was wondering why it was doing that...does it have something to do with the url's?

<Edit> I decided to post my signature here to give a visual aid (minus the spaces in the brackets, of course):

: satisfied : [ size=10pt ][ b ]The Artist's Place,[ /b ] by Vandy[ /size ]

[ i ]Check out my threads -[ /i ]
[ url=http://sc4devotion.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=35&topic=190.0 ][ b ]El Arte de Palabras[ /b ][ /url ]
[ url=http://sc4devotion.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=35&topic=191.0 ][ b ]Masochist's Music

That's what I want...and if I put that in, it says that it's exactly 300 characters.  But it cuts off the "usic," so I took out ", by Vandy."  But I would like to put it back, so I'm just wondering if there's anything in particular that causes that, and whether it was a fixable thing...

I have a posting problem that I don't understand. Whenever I use one of the alternative typefaces by clicking the symbol (Bold, Italic, etc) I'll use "bold" here in the example to describe it, though it happens with all of them. The bold type will start, but then when I click again when I'm done to go back to normal type, the bold continues. When I look at the post before I send it, I see that the words are between the bracketed "B"s as they should be. But when the message gets posted, it's like the end "B" isn't having any effect. I know this has got to be a pain for anyone reading, so I've just eliminated any alternative type until I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.

As an example, I'll start doing bold type Here and I'll stop here. Now even though I see the four words between the "B"s, I'll bet the entire remainder of my post will be in bold. What am I doing wrong? Thanx.

EDIT: Yeah, it did it! HELP!!!

EDIT by Colyn ...

As an example, I'll start doing bold type Here and I'll stop here. Now even though I see the four words between the "B"s, I'll bet the entire remainder of my post will be in bold. What am I doing wrong? Thanx.

When you want to style you must be carefull because the highlighted are sometimes will jump ... so I want this in ITALICS ... and this UNDRELINED. It is done by first completing your typing and then apply it section by section ... make sure you dont let the highlight goes across tags and miss either starting tags or closing tags.

If you edit the post above you will see you have two sets of [ b ] tags and two sets of [ / b ] but look where they sit ... I suspectt it is you that are clicking to start BOLD and click to stop bold ...

In the Quick Reply, when something is marked and the link bottoms is pressed, this is what I get (where test what was marked):
[_url=http://test[_/url] (added the two _ to get it to show)
As you see the first end bracket is missing. I would love for the 'http://' to me gone too.

vester, there is a mod installed which opens a popup window to allow the user to easily enter a text and a URL to create a link, when you use the standard reply option.
You have explained very well the drawback when it comes to use the quick reply window. Some PHP code must be changed to fix that. A note for the PHP master  ::)

Admins hold that kind of sway, so I hope nobody starts posting in the wrong forum. Colyn has a lot to do and I hope my ribbing got a laugh, but I am not funny in type only in person.

You looked at the name, not a noob, thought it was safe, no exasperating, pull out your hair, idiotic, answer is obvious type of question. But I'm an exasperated idiot who's pulling my hair out, so maybe a little compassion for the truly damaged among us.

I read the tutorial. I got some great help from Colyn the other day. I thought I had it. But I only have part of it. When I post, I can get the bold, italic and underling functions to work. Colyn was good enough to point out what I was doing wrong and I was a happy camper. Then I tried the colour and font size functions. Can't get it. Nothing happens. The brackets show up, looks like they're in the right places, but when I post, nothing changes. I tried highlighting (Which I ASSume means highlighting the desired text, then clicking the function button) and the brackets appeared, but nothing changed on the post. For example, I'm trying to make this sentence red. But as you can see, it isn't.

One more time for a member with seriously misfiring neurons. When I finally get it down, I'll write a step by step instruction guide to suppliment the tutorial so you'll never have to answer this one again.

Thanx.

Quick hint:  Select the text where you want to apply the tag. Once selected click the desired tag. That is all  ;) . If you want to add another tag, select the text including any previous tags, and once it is selected, click on the new tag. The new tag will be applied to the text and existing tags.

I don't have much time, so I'm going to include a rather large and virtually unedited screenshot to this post. Sorry.

Doc, in Firefox do the following (see image below). I am going out on a long shot here, but it might just be it.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

PS. Sorry, the image is a full 1024 x 768 screenshot. Not much time. Studying. :P

If the size is problematic, can someone with the relevant permissions remove the image and just leave the link. Thanks.

Thanx, [b[M[/b]. I tried it, but it's still not changing. I dunno, I guess it's something I'm gonna have to live with. I suppose as long as everyone else can see it, it doesn't really matter. This is really bizarre and it's frustrating me to the max because I can't figure out what should be something very simple...well, really, something that shouldn't be happening at all!

I really appreciate all the help. Thanks again!

I have a request from the french subforum

Someone using IE7 is experiencing some problems with images hosted on sc4devotion and sc4devotion only
ie he can't see smileys, or LEX pictures, but he can see all pictures in MD or other threads which are hosted off site

Any clues ?

The pictures hosted in the site can not be hotlinked. It makes me guess if this person is visiting this site using frames windows inside another url ?¿

This is no big thing, however, when I posted my CAM report, I noticed my avatar and sig were missing, and that this was my first post  ()what() I went in and sure enough it was all missing (including my hard earned aura point(just kidding here). I redid the information, and I am not one who really cares about number of posts, but I was wondering if this had happened to anyone before. Heck, for a minute I thought you threw me out.  ::)

There's something funny about the time stamps on the forum. I used Auto-adjust in the forum software (my profile settings, rather), which gave me a value of -15, and that's quite a few hours off. How does this work regarding time-stamps in the forum?

It seems there's no easy way to select what time zone you belong in, unless I'm missing something. In fact, the time stamp on this message is 8 hours off from my normal time.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: jeronij on June 12, 2007, 10:23:41 AM
Forum profile --> Modify Profile --> Look and Layout Preferences
There you should be able to add plus or minus hours to the site's time.
Look the time where you are
Look the time that the forums says it is
Calculate the difference
Place the difference into the "Time Offset" Box

This should make the trick  ;D

Yay, it's fixed. It seems that the negative time was a little bug when dealing with timezones more than 12 hours ahead of the site time.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk

It looks like Apache is denying access to all images on sc4devotion for Firefox 3 -- perhaps some kind of server filter or detection?  Maybe looking for a referrer or other header?

Hotlinking protection is activated for images. But this can not be a problem when you are navigating the site.... ()what()

Can you try with another browser and tell us something pls?
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...

Using a very beta browser and you are blaming us for the problem?  The site is fine, the images are all intact, it is your browser that is the problem.

Let us know if you cannot access with IE or FF2.  Also, it could be your connection is disallowing images for security reasons...Are you on an educational network?
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...

More info.  It is an Apache setting, but it is linked to a privacy setting in FF: network.http.sendRefererHeader.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries#Network..2A
Jeroij said how it relates to the server:
"Hotlinking protection is activated for images."  It's probably using the referrer.  As for a future solution, you could use another method or tell users the problem when it happens.

Since when hotlinking protection is a problem ?¿ Why should we be compatible with any beta browser?
Also, so far (8 months) no one complaint or notified any problem about this until you posted yours. So I don't think additional measures are needed.

I actually wouldn't worry about it too much, jeronij. Besides, these little hiccups come up from time to time with beta versions of browsers. When FF3 comes out, these problems should be solved, anyway. I've actually had these errors happen a couple of times, usually when I accidentally mistype a link or something.

It's really nothing major.

I, too, cannot view photos, smilies or graphics on SC4D, the forums or LEX.  All I get is the dreaded red 'X.'  For example, the SC4D homepage is all red X's and some readable writing.  I'm using IE 7.0, Verizon DSL, and I have Nortons AV and Internet Security.  When I turn off Nortons, which can sometimes cause issues, I still have problems viewing graphics.

I've noticed a problem with the home page and forums over the past 2-3 days.  The homepage always says "Welcome Guest" even though I have logged in and checked the box to always stay logged in.

I always use the "Show unread posts since last visit" feature to see what's new on the Forums, but this does not work all the time now.  Today, it tells me there are no new posts even though I know that is not true.  This has happened several times now.

I think it is connected to something not working right with the login.  Is anyone else having similar problems?

This all used to work flawlessly for me, and I haven't changed anything on my computer.  I don't think there is a problem on my end, but anything is possible.

I didn't have this problem, but it sounds like you blocked the SC4devotion cookie in some way. If you use IE, please check extra->internet options->privacy->websites and check the list for the SC4Devotion website. Hope this will help you out.

It also depends what your URL is... there is some discrepancies on this site. having www. and not having www. will actualy affect the saving of cookies and the such so that the homepage at www. will not be logged in because the cookie is saved for the not www. if you get what i mean

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I am running Firefox and checked that I have "Accept cookies from sites" selected on the Privacy tab.

Firefox lets you view and manage your cookies individually, so I verified that my cookies are for "sc4devotion.com".  I cleared all of the cookies, just in case something was corrupted on my side.

I'm going to delete the cookies again then try to login from the home page.  Perhaps I can confirm if this is a problem or not.  Stay tuned.

UPDATE #1:  Ok, here are the results on my testing.  I deleted the sc4devotion.com cookie again, restarted the browser, then used the login from the new home page selecting the option to always stay logged in.  I was issues an SC4DevSMFCookie10 cookie that expires Tuesday, November 05, 2013 2:32:27 PM - which is exactly the same as my local time when it was issued.  The cookies issued from the home page are expiring immediately - at least when you use the "always stay logged in" option.  I have not tested with a set number of minutes.

UPDATE #2:  Some additional testing... This appears to be caused by the "always logged in" option.  I used that option from the home page and forums, and both times I was issues a cookie with an expiration date set to my local time.  I always used the 1 Month option in the past, so this was my change that caused the issue for me.  I tested setting 60 and 90 minutes from the home page login with the proper results.

So is this the way the cookie is supposed to be issued to keep you logged in always?  My privacy options are set to keep cookies until they expire, which is the default in Firefox - so I think they are being deleted or ignored.  I only mention this in case there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

I have my problem resolved and will go back to the way I was logging in before.  Don't want to miss any more posts on my favorite site.

Thanks to capo and star.torturer for pointing me in the right direction.

UPDATE #3  Well, all that testing was for nothing.  The problem has come back same as before.  On the home page, it says "Welcome Guest" but on the Forums page it says "Welcome ScottFTL".  When I use "Show unread posts since last visit", I get nothing.  I'm really at a loss here.  Am I the only one having problems with the forums over the past few days?

To people having problems with SC4D logging you in then kicking you out:

Make sure the link is http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php

It's because SC4D's referrer URL is a little funky, and always insists on sending you to http://sc4devotion.com, rather than http://www.sc4devotion.com, if you log in with the latter. The result is: you have to log in again. And again when you restart the session, and so on.

ScottFTL, don't log in using SC4D's home page, it suffers from the same funky referrer URL problem too. ;)

The GLR is a subset of the NAM. I would suggest looking around there first. I found this thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4623.0) there that would be a good place to start. There is a known issue with the GLR when using puzzle pieces, but take a look through that thread, it should answer most questions.

I guess this is a SC4Devotion bug, it seems you can't edit the wiki any more.  :'(
It Just comes up with a database error:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

from within function "efUpdateCheckUserData". MySQL returned error "1146: Table 'jeronij_wiki.cu_changes' doesn't exist (localhost)".

The past few days when I try to log into the LEX, I get this:

(http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/538/bug01zx0.th.jpg) (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bug01zx0.jpg)

So is this a problem others are having, or is it just me?

Hi -- not a newbie here, but am having a newbie issue. I've never done anything with my custom signature before, and came up with something today; however, when I try to edit my signature, I have a text box and no helpers -- i.e., no formatting helpers, no "insert image" or any other buttons. I have a box, similar to what I'm typing in now, and nothing else. I was able to add text, but that was just to test it out. Any help is appreciated!

Regards,
Don

Yeah, I seem to remember that there used to be a "more like normal post" thing for that. maybe the thing that did it doesnt work with the new version of the forum software or something?

The signature accepts all BBCodes that you can use in normal posts.

Thus, design your signature in a quick reply window, e.g. to this post.
Click Preview and edit it till you're satisfied.

Then copy the content from the Quick Reply window to your signature.
Just don't post your Quick Reply... $%Grinno$%

Thanks, RippleJet. With that in mind, where do I post any signature image file (since the rules state it is to be housed here rather than externally)? Should I upload it in my profile near where my avatar is located? Thanks again!

Don

You can register at www.photobucket.com and it is very easy and convenient to upload and link images from that site. Once an image is uploaded, hover your cursor over it, and a series of code thingys will drop down from it. Click on the rectangle next to the text "IMG code" (the gray text in that box should become highlighted in light blue) and if a yellow "Copied" message DOES NOT appear, press ctrl + C to copy the text. To post it in the SC4D forum, just press ctrl + V to paste the text and the image will show up where you pasted the code. Just make sure to follow the rules on posting pictures: None larger than 1024x768 pixels, but a max of 800 x 600 is preferred. Also, try to keep the images from being too brightly colored.

Those rules may seem strict but they're actually pretty easy to follow. (unless you make a mistake when getting images from Google - i found that out the hard way ;))

This applies to signature images, too. To add an image to your signature, first make sure it is no larger than 50x300 pix, then copy the IMG code like I said above, and paste it where you want in your signature editing box. Animated GIFs are allowed, if you know how to make them.

Thanks, nerdly_dood. I'm cool with images being hosted off-site and all, and how to use them in posts. My concern stems from the site rules (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=7.msg10#msg10) which state, "First and foremost, we host your sig image here at SC4D." I'm happy to host it off-site, but was just being sure I wasn't breaking any rules first.

You can.  Take the quotations out that you have around "100" and the image will show up no problem!

I'm running into a problem whenever I want to check unread topics:

How true that is. We have over 47 000 registered members of the LEX. Assuming that there are some clones made when a first registration failed and a number of banned members it would still leave over 30 000. I have sent out 125 DVDs for donators. It isn't much of a proportion is it? ::)

The NAM, eh? Yeah, I'd assume it was quite a bandwidth drain, esp. since SC4D was the only site in the English community that was offering the new version. Hopefully, some more people will get the LEX DVD, so this won't happen again soon.

Unlike Jonathon I cant give Karma at all but I too cant see why someone hasnt had there Karma changed or the stats at the bottom of the page.... The only Karma stats I can see is my own...

Bob56,

Is that what you been having problems with? Or are you talking about adding a pic at the end of post in the Additional Options?  If that is the case its always better to use imageshack or photobucket to host your images and then use the code it gives to post directly to forums and then use this code,

Code: [Select]

As for the ability to view the Karma Log, to my knowledge there is some experimentation going on with its features. At the present time, it is intentional that it cannot be viewed. There may be changes in the future, but thanks for bringing it to our attention just in case.

Well I think it's a shame that it cant be viewed, as I used to see "oh that person has another karma point", then click to take me to why the karma point was given and more often than not say "wow thats amazing, why didn't I see that before"
Anyway what harm can be done by viewing the log?

Now not much of an issue so much as a question: Why does the forum censor P e g (without the spaces ;)) as "PropPox"? I posted some questions recently on some tech support threads here regarding something of his recently, and just went back to look and got rather confused, before doing a test and determining that it is censored... is he something that is not to be mentioned here then, though I think that sounds a little harsh...?

The image should represent the cycle of problems I keep experiencing.
Basically, I register on the exchange hoping to download the LEX. I fill out the form and wait for the e-mail. Compared  to the wait time for the forum activation e-mail, the wait seemed a bit long. Thinking I may have done something wrong, I fill out the form again with a different name (same address) and wait for the e-mail. I check my inbox in the morning to find my 2 e-mails. I click on the activation link (for the exchange). I don't remember if it acknowledged my activation the first time, but here's where the chart comes in.

I click to log into the exchange, and I get an error message saying my account isn't active and to check my e-mail (see the left part of the diagram). I open my e-mail and click on the link (see top), only to get the error message that "user already active" (see right) (does this mean it's already logged in?). So I figure I can finally log into the exchange. When I try, I get the error saying my account isn't active, check your e-mail ???

I have the exact same cyclic problem with the other account I tried. (I'm using Safari by the way.)

On the verge of rioting, I need help!

Is it just me, or are the text and images smaller? It doesn't happen on any other sites for me, though it doesn't happen on IE, only Firefox 3. Anyone have an idea of what the issue is?

I now get a blue category bar at the top of the forum called SC4D Admin although there are no boards in it?

OK I thought I was nuts as I am seeing that now across all three Browers I use...  BTW IE 7, Opera, & FF....

Mas-san if its any comfort to you before I switched to my new computer last night I was having the same problems with IE7 and that is why I never used it here on Devotions... I used Opera or FireFox honestly...  My only new problem is trying to adjust my new monitor so everything aint soooooo stretched out lol...  I know it would have to do with the screen resolution on your monitor if its lower then the recommended 1024*768... Hope that helps out a wee bit - patrick

a quick solution (that you probably know) is to, on any offending picture:
*drag it into a new tab
*right click and "open in new tab"
*right click and copy location, paste into new tab.
*etc....

hope that helps until the problem is resolved

Mas san, I tried some available plugins for that purpose some time ago, and they were lacking the most basic features... it was not possible to select a range of messages nor to choose the export format (only xml was allowed at that moment)... I also recall that when I tried to export my pm, the server went totally blokecd during the process...  so I decided to not to install it.

Anyway, I'll make another check, and who knows?, perhaps there is a more current and suitable plugin currently... but I cant promise anything...  ::)

Hi,

I would like to report a problem with the forum software (I guess I'm not alone).

I'm using IE8, and when I'm writing a PM or forum post, and the text length exceeds the height of the text box (ie when the scroll-bars are displayed), it jumps upwards as you type. As one typically adds the text to the end of the PM/post, this is very annoying! So I have to use notepad, write the text there and then paste it into the text-box. I have also found this is fixed, if I click the "Compatibility View" button (only I have to remember it befor writing the post). Also, there problems with IE8 concerning the wiki project (wrong formatting). This is again fixed by clicking the "Compatibility View" button.

Maybe it's time to upgrade (pr fix) the forums SW to the latest standards. Don't know how much work this is though.

Thanks

That is purely a browser bug, its obviously rendering the html incorrectly. You should consider getting Firefox or Chrome or an alternative ;). Updating the forum software shouldnt fix anything, being that its the browsers faulty rendering.

I have a problem that is related to the "width" issue, but I don't think to the scrollbar thing. When I view the site, it automatically truncates my web image and puts black bars on each side. I cannot see all the text. If I could scroll over to it, that would be ok, but I cannot. There is no scrollbar at the bottom. It is "fixed". If there is something over that I THINK is important the only way for me to read it is to "quote" the message and then look at the message in the quote window. Here is what I mean:

EDIT: I resized the image so people can see it? (at least I can)

jeje.. this is funny.. I can't even see my own post edges.. :(  .. I hope you can see them. The black bars on the picture edge are not adjustable nor maneuverable as far as I can see. They just "cut off" the text and images

Anyway, is there any way anyone knows to make this work with a slider or something or for me to use a different setting for my webviewer?

Thanks

Removing those black edges would unfortunately not be enough for you to see everything in that particular thread...
Any chance you could increase your screen resolution to show more than 800 pixels horizontally?
The recommendation for Devotion is mentioned on the bottom of the main page:

Also a 1024*768 or higher resolution is highly recommended to view this site

1024x768 is my viewing screen.. .I can make it wider, but the text starts to get so small it makes it difficult to read the text on many web sites..

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: SC4BOY on August 19, 2009, 03:16:34 AM
Nope.. Are you seriously suggesting I change browsers because I can't read wide messages? This  is the only site I visit that effectively blocks wide content.. there is no checkmark, unwrap, windowed, etc that allows the width of the content to be viewed. This is especially annoying since a LOT of the detail technical content (for example my posted pic above) that is basically a spreadsheet which has a LOT of info beyond the edges..

Of course for normal "messaging and viewing" it works fine.. but there is no alternative..

Unfortunately, after the last forums update some months ago, the code modification which allowed the forums to use horizontal scrollbars to scroll the windown content, was lost. This functionality is no longer available  &mmm

Using another browser (you dont have to change your favourite one, simply install an additional one) is not a so bad idea because every browser renders the pages differently, and a different one could make the trip for you. Or couldnt...  ::)

Another option would be to right click on the bigger pictures, and open them in a separate browser window or tab, this way you should be able to see them fully.

Btw, you are using the minimum resolution recommended to browse this site, but as you know, the minumun requirement do not mean the full features....  ::) .... Changing your monitor to a bigger one, which allows higher resolutions would be an improvement in your overall internet and gaming experience ... of course if you could afford it  ;)  ;D

Not a technical issue, but a security issue. I've been experimenting with an archive of SMF 1.1.5 and it seems that this is a known exploit where PHP code can be executed through avatars and load a shell for the hacker capable of reading settings, accessing the database and even delete files and settings.  :o I think it's been patched in the latest version of SMF, though (1.1.10).

When I open SC4D it always says I'm logged out, even though I've set it to be logged in forever, and then if I click on a link in the page, then without typing in my username and password it decides I'm logged in?

I have Cookies on and other sites remember me well, such as ST.
Is there something like the cache that I can change/do something to and it will remember me properly?

You're adding it to your profile? Just click on Forum Profile Information, then scroll down to signature. Make sure you click on save profile when you're finished. There have been times I've not been able to update my sig, but I can't remember what the problem was.

Note also that the signature accepts all BBC Codes, but no HTML codes.
In order to test your signature you can design it in a post (preview it but don't post it)...
Then copy the content from that (previewed but unposted) post into your profile's signature.

Examples:

This is Nate's signature (see its appearance in the post before mine):

Um... uh... [url=http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3639.0]Cleanitols for free![/url]
[img width=50 height=50]http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k301/ditareinvented/YoYo%20and%20CiCi/yoyo147.gif[/img][url=http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=7120.0]LEX Scrutineers - Making sure Santa can get down the chimney[/url]

And this is my signature (see it's appearance below):

I don't really understand much about either BBC or HTML. What I am entering is this [*url=http://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9362.0[/url] (minus the star)

I have just copied and pasted one of your examples and changed the address.

It's only showing up in preview mode when I get rid of the url= bit, when I enter my thing (minus the star) it shows up blank.
What am I doing wrong?

Hey, you dont need any bbcode in that field, just but the url in it (the http:// bit)

But if you are trying to add a signature, you should put the code in the big blank field above that bit. just copy this in, and change what you want to change:
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9362.0]thingfishs BAT thread[/url]

which will appear as below:

hmmm.. I've tried to search for a specific number (any one, but for example 24653) and the search shows no match... Is there some code delimiters that need to be put around the number? I tried a couple off top of my head, but decided it's easier to ask. I also looked for an "advanced search" that gives me more options, but didn't find one. Send me to a page if its already available.. sorry.

Actually, I'm not sure about this. A search for 737, which I would expect to lead me to SCAG's 737 project, turned up nothing. But a search for 747 lead me appropriately to an AC thread. Strange behavior.

Close your string wiht "" quotes  ;)  - membership permissions do also affect the search results list -

Also, you can try doing an Advanced Search if your search doesn't pan out any results.

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: SC4BOY on December 19, 2009, 10:48:31 AM
Hmm.. well I had already tried both of those with no results. Tried it again just to verify. I was specifically looking for some threads which were discussing texture files and I know they were 256, 512, 1024, etc. It doesn't matter if I use quotes or advanced search, it always shows no result, yet I know those are in the message threads.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: xxdita on December 19, 2009, 10:58:42 AM
Too weird. I'm able to search for 1024 and find results quickly. Searching for 256 or 512 gives me nothing, even with Advanced Search. Although a search for 16 does...

But, there's always the Google Search Bar as well.

Just remember to add the string site:http://sc4devotion.com/forums to get results strictly from here.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: RippleJet on December 19, 2009, 12:38:22 PM
Obviously words like 128, 256 and 512 are not indexed in MySQL...
The only mentioning is in the help text to the search index:

Quote from: SMF Search Index Help
Note that a search index can take up quite some space. A fulltext index is a built-in index of MySQL. It's relatively compact (approximately the same size as the message table), but a lot of words aren't indexed and it can, in some search queries, turn out to be very slow. The custom index is often bigger (depending on your configuration it can be up to 3 times the size of the messages table) but it's performance is better than fulltext and relatively stable.

Our search is currently based on the fulltext index.

Hi ,

I’ve a problem … ( sorry , no monkey to show  :P )

As guest , I can see and read  SFBT Creations as child board of SFBT Place , but , wanting to comment , as soon as I’m logged in , this child board disappears and when I try to log in directly on the child board I’ve got this reply instead : « The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you. »
I tried to browse Andreas’ last posts through his profile and all his posts concerning that child board are missing too … any idea of what’s happens ? I’m using IE 8 but I don't notice such problem elsewhere . ::)

Thanks .

Cédric.

Apparently, your permission settings are screwed up - maybe due to the "SC4D Subscriptor" member group (which is, of course, very unfortunate ;) ). One of the SC4D admins should be able to have a look, though.

When I Googled SC4D, it came up with the normal results, but the link to the site says its offline ??? Of course it's wrong, and I can still access the site, but is anyone else having this problem?

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...

@carkid1998,
I know the reason
The URL address we usually use is started with "http://sc4devotion.com/*", but the results of the address are started with "http://www.sc4devotion.com/*"
When we access the site with that address, the browser doesn't use the cookie of "http://sc4devotion.com/*" and create a new cookie of "http://www.sc4devotion.com/*", so it said you're offline. ::)

Edit: Grammar...

Hmmm... do you have your web browser set to erase your browsing trail when you close it down? If so, then it will delete all cookies. As will any other program set to wipe your browsing trail clean.
Clearing your temporary internet files can also delete cookies. So I tend to do this manually, rather than let IE do it for me.

Images in signatures must be smaller than 300x50, this is possibly why it wont work.

Thought I'd mention a bug I came across on the LEX..(hope this is the right place) If you are looking at your "Download History" and select "Show Outdated Only", the "REMOVE" function doesn't work. If you select it, it will ask you to confirm that you wish to remove it from your history, then it kicks you back to the full list without removing the item. On the other hand, if you use the FULL LIST and page down to the lot in question, the remove function does work.

Ive noticed a bug as of late when trying to update even the Avatar 80 x 90 size right? well anyways when hitting update its still displays your old avatar on IE, FF or Opera are three I tried... But then heres the funny part when I logged out and then logged back in on all three after trying again to update my avatar to my new one it finally showed and only after I logged out...

Before in the past when updating the avatar and update profile it would update automatically, now I got to log out and then log in on what ever browser I might use when I am changing my avatar... Just wondering if anyone else might be having this troubles?

I think it may be a matter of clearing your cache, and the settings you have for your browsers. Mine still update as soon as I switch them.

Lately I have had this problem more and more often (see picture below). As you can probably see, this is not normal whasoever. This happens totally random but more and more ferquently since about a month ago. If I'm lucky I can solve it by hitting refresh. But the weirdest (well, weird) thing is that it only happens on my PC. If I use my iPod touch, the pictures display normally. The same counts for other computers. I suspect this is caused by a virus. But before I draw to conclusion, I want to know wether someone else has the same problem.

here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8550.msg319499#msg319499) you can find how it should look like

EDIT: small update: I can now confirm this also happens on other sites, and the virus scan came out negative

Today I get a malware alert only on the thread http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8550 (Re: Svanskinahya | A small mosaic-preview !)

By the looks of the diagnostics URL I'd say it is an image embedded in that page..
EDIT: Specifically this one : http://s2.noelshack.com/uploads/images/2299280948910_imageseule2cbd.jpg
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa230/warriorST/malwaredetected.png)
Chrome gave me a diagnostics link which is this: http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://s2.noelshack.com/uploads/images/2299280948910_imageseule2cbd.jpg&client=googlechrome&hl=en-GB

I hope this helps if SC4D has been infected or something

I dont think that loading a pic from that server will harm your PC. I don't know this site, but it might be dangerous if you actually visit this site, but as long as the images are not prepared maliciously somehow, simply accessing the URL to a JPG won't cause any problems in your browser.

As far as I agree with Andreas that opening an Image usually does not involve any risk, the site really seems funny. On one hand it doesn't seem to have done anything, but on the other hand it's reported to have (possibly?) infected 22 sites yesterday (18/04/2010).

Good Day, I am sure this is a simple issue. I was trying to enter a subscription, but Paypal seems to believe that I should do this in Spanish. I checked that my profile is set to English, logged out and in again, but I am afraid Paypal is not budging.

I would be most grateful if you could give Paypal a nudge, I would love to learn Spanish, but really do not have the time right now.

Many Thanks

Hi Begabee, I know the source of your problem (I think). When I tried the same thing, it was in Spanish for me too. But going to the box that says "Pais" (which means country) and selecting Nueva Zelanda (New Zealand - the menu is in Spanish) or any other English-speaking nation should cause the page to reload in English.

Hope this works for you.

Best of luck and welcome to SC4Devotion.

Many thanks once more.

I think it may be because it was set up by a Spaniard, Jeronij, who is the webmaster of this forum. I guess if the PayPal payment form was set up in Spanish, it regards Spanish and Spain as the default language and country.

At and rate, you're very welcome. I'm glad to help.

I've been trying to add a flash in my signature to advertise Elliptical Plaza, etc.  For example, joelyboy911 has just the kind of thing I want in my signature.  I will have links at the bottom.  The problem is, even though I've converted the *.wmv to *.flv and *.swf, And uploaded them to multiple hosting sites, just in case one wasn't working right, no matter what I do, the flash won't appear at the bottom of my signature.  Is something wrong or am I doing something wrong?

I often see many awesome-looking BATs on the "LEX Latests" slideshow on the site's homepage, but I am unable to get to them or figure out their names because clicking on the slideshow doesn't do anything.  When I click on it, the URL in the address bar changes to show http://www.sc4devotion.com/# instead of http://www.sc4devotion.com/, but that's it.  There isn't any error shown in the status bar.  My browser is Safari 5.0.1 for Windows.

Which caused me a bit of a panic when I thought SC4D had been taken down.

My true nick is 'payer0', i had to make new acc because I cant login.

Ive changed preferred forum language in my profile setting tab (to Polish).

Now I can only see:

Template Parse Error!
It seems something has gone sour on the forum with the template system. This problem should only be temporary, so please come back later and try again. If you continue to see this message, please contact the administrator.

You can also try refreshing this page.

Only main page appears correctly.

Can u fix it? or change 'prayer0' forum language back to English manually?

PS. Ive tried Opera, FF, IE.

Hello there,

I have reverted the language to english so now you should be able to use your usual account. The parse error means that there is some translation missing in the polish files.... &mmm ... surely this will be fixed in a next software update. For the time being, dont use polish as the forums language ¡¡¡  ::)  ;)

This is a general problem that affects most SMF installations, esp. if you're using modifications. Usually, those only come with English text strings, and unfortunately, rather than using the English text in the other languages as well, the text is not displayed at all. This means one would have to add all text strings manually to the language files, which would take a lot of time even without translation...

Hello slagonia26

I did notice in your furby topic that you were posting as slagonia and slagonia26, this explains it.

The LEX (or exchange) is separate from the forums so your forum login and password won't work on the LEX and vice versa, the good thing is you can set up both accounts using the same information.

The registration screen for the LEX is here

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_userreg.php

hope that helps

 :)

PS:  also you should ask one of the administrator's to delete your extra account on the forums

Its not just you, and I know that Douzerouge was also having problems getting on the site

A small annoyance with the main forum page, The news bar's height changes according to the height of the text, moving all of the elements under it up and down as much as 20px.

The news text probably needs to be stuck in its own div with a static height to stop it bouncing.

I notice that the national flags that used to appear below each member's name and avatar in posts are missing since the upgrade.  This is certainly not a site-breaker by any means, but it's just a minor detail I noticed.

Hello jeronij,

Thanks all for your hard work.  I noticed the site was back up in the morning (for me), went down for for a few hours, and it's back up now.  Though I made posts earlier, and now they're gone.   &cry2  Did something bad happen and you had to restore to a backup?

Also, one of the times today during the past few hours, instead of the maintenance page, I got something about a "alldeny" error and a directory of a .php page.  I don't mean to scold, but security is always important.   :)  Might want to lock down stuff so ordinary users (and hackers) don't see interesting error messages.  I wish I knew more specifics on locking down php and servers to help.

[Edit]:  I'm seeing these "Sim City 4 Devotion Forums" posts in between posts in threads, with the timestamp as the previous post.

Good to see the forum being back. It seems like the BBcode for tables has changed, because all the tables are 'gone' now. Could that be solved?
I've also seen that some member labels could not be shown. <-

Hello to all,

Regarding the sudden forums shut down last night, and the posts posted since that time, which hopefully wont be too much, unfortunately was due to a bad move from the hosting support, which did overwrite all the files in the new server, instead of copying only the missing files in the LEX... this did break the forums and this morning when I noticed it I just could restore a backup that I had from last night :( On the positive side of things, we have recovered the full LEX :D ¡¡

Some of the previous existing plugins are lost after the upgrade because there are no compatible versions of them. Most of these plugins were not critical, but helpful ;) , so I wont try to make them compatible. There are some which are critical, like the tabular tables code, forums downloads and and the awards mod which I'll try to install in this version of the forums.

The old theme is not compatible with this version of the forums. I used some of the styles and graphics to create this one, but not sure if the old one will be back again nor when would it happen :(

Thanks to all for your patience and understanding. There are also many other minor tweaks to make here and there, but hopefully you wont even notice them ;) ¡¡

EDIT: Oh¡, and you can add again your flags in your profiles if you wish to do so. Unfortunately the new version of the pluggin does not use the old settings.

Hello all,
I no longer have the new forum layout, I am now back to the default Simple Machines one. It isn't really annoying, I am just wondering why. Is it only temporarily? Is it only happening to me? How can you switch it back?

Thanks,
Jack

To get your flag back if you still haven't already done so, you need to reset your country in your profile.

<< ;D

Also, I can see a phantom set of "Quote, Modify, Remove" buttons and even a time-stamp under my post as though I had posted below myself but these buttons do nothing.

In fact the european flag was not in the flags database in the former version of the forum and Jeronij added it nicely on my demand.

Think it will be the same process with the new layout even if I understand that it's not a priority.

Just to remember that all the citizens of the 25 countries of the UE are at first europeer and after german, french or whatelse

Some browsers support a feature whereby the input text box of a posting can be resized, both horizontally and vertically.  I have found that this comes in very handy when making long posts (which I am notorious for doing  :D ).  In the old forums, this feature worked both horizontally and vertically.  When the new forums first came out, this feature worked for vertical resizing, but not horizontal.  Now, in the same SMF forums, it doesn't work at all.  The fact that it changed so quickly would seem to imply that it could be changed back.  Please, could the posting areas be fixed so that they can be resized both horizontally and vertically?  Thanks!  :)

EDIT:  I notice that this feature is fully operational in both directions in the Quick Reply box.

I just wanted to update my previous post about text box resizing.  It turns out that this is connected to the WYSIWYG editing function - when that function is turned on, the text box cannot be resized, but when it's turned off, resizing is possible in the vertical direction.  It would be nice to have resizing in the horizontal direction too, but the vertical direction is by far the most important, and as I have figured out how to make this work, the remaining issue is much less important now.

Latest Posts on the main page (index.php) no longer works.
Transparency doesn't work on the navigation buttons on index.php, probably due to conversion from GIF/PNG to JPG.

Profile Customization and Information: Additional profile settings, Custom Title, View other's members profiles and stats, Upload a custom avatar, Use a remote avatar...
No Advertisements or banners at all. Enjoy a top speed and cleaner forums browsing experience ¡¡
Extra Posting Functions: Ability to lock own topics, post attachments, post polls...

Way to go and punish members for not subscribing. I know lots of our members are quite young and/or students and have little or no money to spend, and can't subscribe or donate even if they want to. I can see why uploading a custom avatar can be resource intense, but linking to an avatar offsite? And disallowing the viewing of member profiles? Sure if you're just a guest, then that's usually the case, but if you have an account you ought to be able to at least view another member's profile. Removing that is just rude.

As long as you still can PM moderators so they'll lock your topic, that is ok. Attachments, ok. It's easy to upload your file on another service these days. But polls... that is no way intense for the forum software.

All those arguments are totally understable but they wont be changed by the time being. As a curiosity I will mention that the forums have currently 66653 members. Lets say that 10% are unactivated or wrong accounts. That leaves us 60000 members. In the LEX there are 143,826 members, minus that 10% means 129443 members. Lets say that every forums member has a LEX account, so the total number of members in the site is +/-130.000. Currently there are 11, yes, eleven, subscriptors, or people actively supporting the maintenance costs. 130.000 against 11. Not that bad.

In my opinion the forums and the LEX are perfectly usable for all the members as they were before. Only some cosmetic features and extra infos have been changed. No more resctrictions are to come to the regular members permissions, but it is possible that new features are made available for subscriptors only.

Finally, the mentioned changes are for regular members only. People who belongs to any of the contributive teams who actively participate in the site and in the community keep having the mentioned features.

Regarding last marsh's post, and as mentioned in above, there are other ways to get those features without the need to donate.

Hello Mithokey

Just because I don't post a ton of stuff means I should be punished or something?

I'm puzzled. You can read and post in the forums. You can access various game playing tutorials, gmax tips, texturing hints, peruse the various Mayor Diaries to see how some experts play the game and be entertained and/or be amazed then take those ideas to your own game, you can take a brief look at some future NAM productions, WOW! As near as I can tell you are able to download from the LEX. What exactly is this punishment?

hey Jack

I think you still can. There is a black banner/bar at the top of the web page that has a number of links. One says 'staff list' ...
You mean the one that has links such as Home, Help, Search etc.? Because for me it isn't on there.

Oh? Now that's funny. You better be good and not get any negative Karma points as you'll not see the Calendar button either. And a -2 Karma causes the 'my messages' to disappear.  :)  Sorry I couldn't help.

Good Luck

- Jim

What is implying that he will do anything bad at all. That seems an unnecessary response to his question.

...Currently there are 11, yes, eleven, subscriptors, or people actively supporting the maintenance costs. 130.000 against 11. Not that bad.

There's only eleven of us   :o  I'm truly shocked that there aren't more people supporting the site, its only 1euro a month or 1.67 a month in NZ Dollars ... even a student should be able to come up with that amount of money.

Please MAS san, and all other LEX uploaders.

DONT UPLOAD NEW FILES, OR UPDATE EXISTING FILES IN THE LEX for the time being  $%Grinno$% . The missing files in the LEX are lost (6 of them) , and will need to be uploaded again  :(. Any file that is modified currently can also be lost  :o .

When the issue is solved, we will inform you. Downloading works fine for the  moment, but uploading does not, and we are looking whats going on :)

Thanks for your patience

I'd try to UPLOAD with new one and UPDATE for existing pages on LEX after Jeronij had some changes.
&apls LEX is working FINE now !  &apls

By the way, For all of users 'LEX-Uploader'  "$Deal"$

Finally, the mentioned changes are for regular members only. People who belongs to any of the contributive teams who actively participate in the site and in the community keep having the mentioned features.
.....

What is classified as a contributive team? Is it any certified team, or just certain teams determined by the admins  (eg. NAM, BSC, and other big name teams)?

Also, what is "actively participate" determined by? We all do have periods of inactivity at some point throughout the year, whether it be a busy work schedule, or exams for school.

Thanks! :)

Honestly, if you want people to subscribe be nice about it. Don't treat it like a commercial and give special privileges to people just because they pay, even if they may be a contributing member of the community. Which in my mind, is everyone. You don't just have to make content, or even make it at all to contribute to the community. So where is that line drawn?

If I had money to give I probably would donate. I may only be 17 but I NEED to buy stuff too. Gas? School food? I have little money and my parents don't pay everything and I doubt anyone else's do either. I dislike that you're treating select people better than other members IMO

I agree with marsh. This should not be treated as a commercial enterprise.

You should really look at what happened to Netflix. They increased their rates and made people suffer. Now they are going to lose almost everyone in their business. SC4 Devotion is following the same path as Netflix's. I am a 16 year old student but I know bad business can destroy companies, even non-profit organizations.

I have the same problems as marsh's and we can't afford anything! So give our rights back!

ad block... voila, no ads or subscription thingies. Now... I would love to see a financial statement for the forum and lex... I want to see how much things cost. That abouts the only way I'll pay - I want to see the forum's posting a loss or right at the break/even. And to block remote avatars? Thats just plain silly and is a more sign of someone wanting to promote an iron grip on this forum. Its a slow slippery road down where this place is heading from this view point.

Jesus... These ads take it to a new level of annoying. Less pushing and more ramming more like it and I bet they're using up more bandwidth than Custom Avatars.
A single post on a page and there's three ads. It makes me miss my Ad Blocker when I'm away from my own PC.

I might Donate when the LEX DVD is cheaper (Since the 'eventuall release' for most of that exclusive content appears not to be happening) and when it comes on an actual DVD, but I'll hold off for now.

EDIT: Ooooo 'Top Ten Keyloggers'. Great ad from your providers guys
I'll help in my own little ways anyway. Like moving my avatar to Majhost, considering its 21Kb seems to be excessive.

I'm not quite sure what all of the fuss is about to be honest: the simple truth is that this is Jeronij's site.

He pays for this from his own money.

Not only the forums and the bandwidth that they use, but also the LEX which has gigabytes (and is growing exponentially)of active content that is free to download. Hosting all of that content is certainly not free for him, and is not cheap either. If he needs to make changes to people's access based on what they contribute (or pay) in order to protect his own personal finances and maintain the longer-term viability of the site, then that is a matter for him, as this is his site.

Demanding the removal of adverts, reinstatement of features or to see the P&L of the site before donating is a very contrary stance (I'm not trying to have a go at anyone in particular, just looking at the comments).

That you take umbrage at the percieved notion that these changes somehow impose restrictions on you and remind you of a  commercial venture, overlooks a simple reality: that this site IS a commercial venture.

It's just someone else's money that's being spent so that you can enjoy a hobby.

It's overload.

I once went to a forum where members couldn't have image signatures or post images until several thousand posts, and even then they had to be 48px in height. In the later days of the forum that post threshold went down considerably on two occasions (it was 1200 or so by the time it closed). You had to have more than 37,000 posts just to be able to have signatures of height 90px. It was draconian, and everybody knew it. Deleting messages was at a similar 10K or so post mark for years, and so was the ability to edit messages (that dropped down to 1681 by the end).

I'm trying to find some material to go along with this (as proof), but the forum's been gone for four years despite its size.

Hello to all,

As a reply to a concern expressed by several members, I want to inform that the admin staff is profiling the real coverage of the so called "contributive member", which, as appropiately pointed by some of you , does not cover only custom content development teams. This site has always positively discriminated the community members who give an extra push to the community in any form, be it custom content, mayor diaries, tutorials and whatever it is useful for the community and keeps it alive and willing more. This will continue being so as long as I am the webmaster and owner.

As a recall to all the members posting in these forums, in this topic or in anyone, post like these ones:

Yes, I 100% understand the ads... but everything else, c'mon! Just ridiculous!! I have never went to a forum which such weird rules... doesn't make any sense to me what-so-ever.

ad block... voila, no ads or subscription thingies. Its a slow slippery road down where this place is heading from this view point.

are very close to a red line that every member agrees to respect and not cross when registering. Dont forget it. No one is asking you to pay nothing, and these comments sound very rude and disrespectful. Everything in the site remains free for every person interested in making use of it. So has it been for all the years this site is alive and so keeps it being after the changes. It is sad to see how quick people forgets that.

Keep posting your feedback, but also keep the forms and education while doing so. Thanks   :)

I havent forget about that, requested some time ago, and about other requests, but I have been quite busy this weekend solving the problems with the LEX, they're fully working again¡¡, and with the forums attachments, several 1000s of them were lost.
Now that this is solved, I'll go for the rest of pending matters, including this one ;)

Things becoming available as you become more active are not new to this site.  I have seen my messages cap be lifted, as well as the ability to remove posts.  Don't know if someone actively did this, one day I couldn't, next day I could.

Something about the forum looks much better today.  There is now a log in box in the main forum page, something I like.  The default log in time is forever.  I am not sure if this was meant to be, as yesterday the default was 60 min.  Maybe a way to keep fake accounts off?  I don't know.

The thing is, the 'premium features' described are not that premium at all, but really basic features. You should maybe find a cheaper host or look for other solutions. Taking basic features away from the member base isn't the way to get subscribers, this is just a bit of an opinion.

Was that a subscription or a donation. Both things are different, I've made several donations along the years and for that I received the DVD and the CD, and I'm not a subscriber. I believe the subscription it's quite recent .;)

The topic overview in NAM How-Tos and Tutorials (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=235.0) seems to be "buggy", if the left panel is activated. You can find the topics by scrolling down. If the panel is not activated everything is fine. (my settings: 1024x768)

That forum is broken overall. If you go into any of those threads, you'll find that the posts are all mangled together and it's hard to read the thread.

Also, how can we get rid of this crappy new sidebar and go back to the former style? The selector on the side is unintuitive, the main page is garbage to look at and the old logo was leagues better than this new one.

The glitch I raised earlier on this page hit again - I wonder why, never used to happen with the old forum software. Has anyone else had this issue?

Also, sc4devotion.com/forums/index goes to the home page, whatever it is (it also removes the actual forum link below the top navigation bar). Can this be fixed so that the aforementioned link goes to the forum index like it's supposed to, instead of going sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php&action=forum?

It's only logical...

Another thing:

Sorry, but the sidebar just doesn't work very well - would much prefer that there only be a single navigation bar (in fact, it seems kind of redundant considering that the sidebar a. doesn't stay in a fixed position so it goes with you as you scroll down, b. you have to scroll up anyway to access it)

You should clarify your response: there is in fact an option to minimise the left sidebar so it no longer can be seen. I've done that myself so I get back some valuable screen space.

It's up the top, above the Users Online panel (2 - symbols, one on the left minimises the left sidebar, one on the right minimises Users Online)

I am experiencing this issue sometimes in IE, but never in FF. I have to look further into it.

You have a button in the menu which goes to the forums. You can also copy the link and make it your homepage.

You cant get rid of that crappy bar because there is no crappy bar. There is just a helpful forums quick links menu. Hope this answers this other post:

I notice the homepage has what appears to be a post from every thread from the SC4D Goings On section.  Can we change this thread, or perhaps set it to show the last post (it often shows the first)?  Thanks

I hope I win the Popular Poll  :D

Edit:  Thanks for increasing the board width.

I am seeing the thread navigator, right now we are "Sim City 4 Devotion Forums » Forum » Sim City 4 Devotion Related » SC4Devotion Requests and Issues (Moderators: freedo50, BarbyW) » SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...".  This overlaps into the next section of the page, right now going over "Online" up top, and "Jump To" down below.

I notice there are a large number of banners asking me to subscribe. I have considered a subscription, and the NZD-EUR  exchange rate is not bad at the moment, but sometimes there are just too many banners! I mean when they appear right atop eachother such as this one in Alex's Belgian BAT's thread.

The way it appears like a thread reply also looks a bit messy, the page would look cleaner if it was just the banner, without the "Re:" and "Quote" etc:

I know the site needs more money, but having 10 or more banners on every page really is a lot. Especially when the rules on signatures read as follows:

"the use by many members of large sigs serves to create a "bazaar" effect in forum threads, detracting from the comments and images that are the threads purpose in the first place.  Think of a road through a scenic area lined by a multitude of billboards- you get the point."

Just my two cents, and I do like many aspects of the forum's new look. And yes, I know the easy way to get rid of the banners is to subscribe!

I agree, at least have it so the banners between each post don't seem like they are their own reply to the topic. It will save space.

And I also noticed that the news section in the header doesn't transition to each item anymore. It only changes when you go to a new page. Is this meant to be like that?

The topic overview in NAM How-Tos and Tutorials (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=235.0) seems to be "buggy", if the left panel is activated. You can find the topics by scrolling down. If the panel is not activated everything is fine. (my settings: 1024x768)

with panel activated // without panel

Hello, you seem to be using the old SC4D 2008 Theme, which is not compatible with the new forums version. I have reset all the members themes to the current, which is the only one that can be used at the moment. Please, try again :)

That forum is broken overall. If you go into any of those threads, you'll find that the posts are all mangled together and it's hard to read the thread.

Also, how can we get rid of this crappy new sidebar and go back to the former style?

You cant.

I'm also seeing the old theme in that sub-forum, ever since the new forum software was installed.  I haven't touched any theme settings under my profile.

I didn't see the old theme popping up when I went in there, but looking over the settings for that board, I noticed it was set to use SC4D_08  as the theme.  Try it now and let me know if it's fixed.

Bingo, fixed!  That makes it much easier to browse.  It wasn't just the sub-forum, all the threads were borked as well, but it's all looking good now.

This is a minor bug but I thought I should report it. In the left panel, the link to gameplay tutorials is broken due to an extra period:

(http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/1379/simcity4devotionlinkrot.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/simcity4devotionlinkrot.jpg/)

the link is like this:

and it should be like this:

Looked through the thread, but I didn't see mention of this (or maybe I just missed it)... The "NAM", "EA Support", and "Boxes?" buttons under the "SC4D Suggests" sign on the left side of forum pages are linking to empty pages.

Thanks and sorry if this was asked/explained elsewhere.

Edit: Let me amend the above... When I am logged on, the above is true. When I am not logged on, I can see the NAM and Boxes pages, but still not EA Support. This is true for Firefox, IE, and Chrome. Is this one of those settings things?

Hmm, I don't really think this is the right place for this... but I don't think it's necessary to just start a new topic.

I was wondering if you have the option to switch between member labels. For example, if a member is on multiple teams, of if a member is on a team and has the subscription with the member label. Would they have a way to choose between them, or is the last one that was given to you?

Thanks! :)

When I was looking at the "Tinyportal" in your "Profile" under "Articles ... Settings" I got this error message

Fatal error: Function name must be a string in /home/jeronij/public_html/forums/Sources/TPmodules.php on line 1120

Fixed ¡¡ ;)

Also, the linktree has been tweaked to be more space saver and to integrate better in the forums theme, and the Teams have been added to the left column menu :)

I found a small problem that was introduced with the recent upgrades.

Clicking on "Mayor Diarys" will take me back to the top of the forums instead of jumping down to the Mayor Diary section. Same for all other sections.
Certainly not a big issue, but a a bit inconvenient.

This seems to be a browser-related issue. Clean your cookies and make sure you allow this site to use them. This should make the trick ;)

The link to gameplay tutorials is still broken.

And also just a minor annoyance, some of the sub-menus on the sidebar only contain one item (Home, Support Us). Would it be possible to change it so you just have to click on the main item and get rid of the sub-menu?

The donate and SUPPORT US buttons don't work, nothing happens if I click the donate boxes or the button on the left-hand side of the screen, and the SUPPORT US link takes you to a login screen (old site colours) which also doesn't work.

Was trying to pay for some subscriptions see here   http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10196.msg391600#msg391600

 :(

EDIT: Use Firefox 4 at home, now at work using IE7 and it looks like the donate boxes (plus button) will work (can't do the donate cos I'm at work and not meant to be here), but the "SUPPORT US" link still goes to an old looking version of the SC4D site called "JJ-MENU-TES"

Over the past few days, I've noticed that sc4devotion.com is automatically redirecting to www.sc4devotion.com.  Since the cookies are associated with the non-www address, I have to manually delete the "www." from the address bar to restore my login.  I've tried deleting and recreating my bookmark, typing the address manually, and even used different browsers (Chrome and Firefox).  Nothing seems to change this behavior, so I'm thinking it may be an issue with the site.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Sometimes I try to read a SC4Devotion forum on my mobile phone that has 800x600 pixels resolution, but it is really hard. 30% of the screen width is lost with the black&white frame on the left, another 30% is lost with the frame indicating details of the posting person, and just 40% are left for the posting itself: (http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/7523/androidt.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/406/androidt.jpg/)
With text only, it is still possible to read it, although lines are quite short, but whenever there is an included image, its display is cut and only about 370 pixels of the left are visible. No way to scroll to the right and look at the remaining part of the image. Why is so much space on the left wasted? Why is it not possible to scroll to the right? Simforum.de is an example that works nicely on mobile phones. Any chance to get a better SC4Devotion forum display for mobile phone users?

Have you tried clicking on the first minus sign (with the tooltip "Left Panel") at the upper right of the page?  That should get rid of the frame on the left.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: Chrisim on October 09, 2011, 05:41:53 PM
Thank you for this tip, Steve. The minus sign is quite small on a mobile phone and tooltips do apparently not exist ...

It does help a lot, although images are still cut and only ~600 pixels are visible. About 200 pixels on the right edge of images remain invisible, because it is not possible to scroll to the right.

I noticed that, when I mouse-over the DIARIES word in the menu to the left, that there is an 'L' missing from 'CASSICS'. Perhaps an admin can correct the typo.

Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but thought it was better than starting a new topic.

So, I was gonna start a new CJ by me, the first one in years and a region I've been working on for really long. However, as this subscription thing has resulted in basic functions being taken away, such as pm between users and the ability to have avatars, I feel that I've lost the respect for this site and thus I'm not going to post any of my  work here.

One example, I won the picture competition three rounds, but was unable to send PM to the responsible moderator and thus the picture has not been included in the hall of fame. So, I've been put off contributing to the site, an unless changes occur I'm not gonna make any more posts whatsoever.

I won't say a lot of things about what you decided, it's your choice and I am in no place to order you to stay, no one is, but just to tell you, PM between user is there I believe.
It's one of the most important feature of the site. If you find a " private " profile which you can't send any PM because no access, then use the little square next to the user name, this will direct you to the PM page. ;)

I sent a pm to tag_one, the one who sent the message after winning the picture contest about picture title etc like at least three weeks ago, and it hasn't been included yet. However, this is not the most concerning thing. What is the most concerning things is that the cost for hosting this site, and sharing the files via lex doesn't call for donations. It's a minimal cost per month to get a web host with unlimited traffic which without any problems could be founded via advertisement. To treat long term members such as myself this way, by taking away basic forum functionalities just puts me off contributing on all stages. So from my part I guess it's good luck have fun from this point forward.

I did receive your PM just now, that proves you can send them even without being a subscriber.

As far as I know, Tag_one is very busy these times, so most probably he got your PM, but never find the time to read it. I never received either yours or Tag_one message, so again most probably he just sent it to only you, and not either Rooker1 or myself, so that in case of an absence, we could relay the information.

There is no hypocrisy. You are free to donate or not, no one is making you actually PAY to use the site.

On that note, seeing as you are in your opinion and will not change it, I'll stop to argue about that.

Just so you know, many websites that have ads, are also no go for MANY people.  There is a pro wrestling site that has craploads of ads, and then suddenly when firefox extensions like ad block and flash block came out, suddenly that site was inaccessible because they made it so that you had to to disable those programs to see the site, which many did not and viewership plummeted to the point after 3 days they had to rescind it.

Ad supported sites are not making as much as one would think anymore, because of things like Ad block, flash block, and even no script, because the site doesn't get credited with a page view when those programs are installed on browsers like Firefox/Chrome/Opera.  In fact, I have not seen an ad on a website in over 2 years, ever since I initially installed those 3 programs.

When I get a decent chunk of money again, I will donate to this site, because over the past few years, I have taken more than I have given, and I do not feel right about it, but like was mentioned, I do not need to donate either, and I have never had any issues sending a PM since they took away features(which actually were implemented quite a while ago).

jeronij has had to upgrade SC4D's hosting package several times over the years to keep up with the volume, and the site has a high enough traffic load that we're having to run on a dedicated server.  This (http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml) should give you some idea of the cost.

Really do not understand the question about PM if the button in the left frame works for everyone. Of course  those who received the PM  should give the answer but many not received!

It reminds me of a feature present in PMs of Tribal Wars where  appear notification  about  the message has been read.

Now regarding the issue of having avatars and other privileges that customize own space, I think a bit of exaggeration and lack of understanding about the use of forums in general.

This like all others is an area that has costs to their administrators and therefore it is up to them to decide what to do to enable their maintenance.

Being open access to all information contained here for all, even for those who do not contribute, I do not see why the dissatisfaction!

It'd be very interesting to get a grip of how much space and bandwidth SC4D requires per month, seeing how the current hosting solution seems awfully expensive to me...

My Site is on a shared UNIX server and costs me $37.95/month + GST NZD

for that I get

Domain name
UNIX 10GB Hosting:
-10GB of storage
-400GB of traffic
-Multiple Databases
-Search Engine Submission
-EasySite Plus design tool

But on top of that I have to pay for the software the site uses, the site security software alone (firewall etc) is 69 EURO a year, there are another 9 programs on the site that I have to pay for ... it all adds up and I've only got 172 active users unlike here which has 194257 LEX Users and 83955 Forum Users.

If you are looking at ways for getting rich running a community website isn't one of them.

Wow catty, that is quite expensive for such a small site. One of the cheaper web hosting providers here offer 60 GB of space + unlimited traffic for ~6 € / 7.5 USD/AUD / 9.2 NZD per month. This includes MySQL databases and PHP support.

Unless the amount of traffic to SC4D and the space it uses really needs a dedicated server (which costs quite a lot), I have a hard time seeing why hosting would be so expensive.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: NCGAIO on September 15, 2012, 08:07:43 AM

If this is too expensive then what about the service that actually hosts the Forum and lex- - Softlayer -  Dedicated Servers  (http://www.softlayer.com/dedicated-servers/)

The merger in 2010 (http://www.softlayer.com/about/media/release/481/gi-partners-announces-completion-of-merger-between-softlayer-and-the-planet-)   of the Theplanet with Softlayer has maybe a little bloated prices since as the last  have the GI Partners as an investor and ranks as one of the world leaders as a provider of cloud services.

If these data approximate are correct and  CJs are like most of the traffic certainly the service should be based on a dedicated server.

Traffic History 90 Day Average

Visitors-1327 +3%
Daily views 10 803 +58%
Pageviews Per-User 12.10 +50%

Maybe the reformulation discussed here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15029.msg431291#msg431291)  bring more space for any type of fundraising.

Unless the amount of traffic to SC4D and the space it uses really needs a dedicated server (which costs quite a lot), I have a hard time seeing why hosting would be so expensive.

In New Zealand that's quite a good deal some of my other choices were

1000MB Space, 15GB Traffic, Unlimited MySQL Databases, Unlimited Domain Names  $50 / Month Excl GST (with Domain Name costing another $44 / per year Excl GST).
1200MB Web Space, Unmetered Traffic, 50 Email Accounts, 10 MySQL Databases  $49.95/mth Excludes GST. No Term Contracts (and no Domain Name).

The company I went with also is my IP provider/Phone/Toll and its the main  (at one point the only company in New Zealand) provider of these services, and for me reliability was one of the key facts in picking them as I don't want to wake up one morning to find the site had vanished.

There are quite wide variations between each country as to what web hosting companies charge customers.

Keep in mind that one of those non-dedicated server "unlimited" plans, while it may not have limits on bandwidth, does have limits on the amount of traffic it can handle at one time, especially if the other sites on the server pick up heavy traffic.  "Unlimited bandwidth" doesn't prevent bottlenecks due to lack of capacity--e.g. the old "SMF could not connect to database" errors that we were getting.

Counting guests and regular members, we often have a steady stream of 50-200 users on the forums (including members and guests), and the LEX is currently averaging about 6500 downloads/day and 120 new members/day, during what would be considered a "down period" for content releases.

I just dont get on how this website bleeds so much money ... but granted those #'s don't tell me alot. For kicks - take a look at this, a SC site up for auction, and look at the adsense #.. https://flippa.com/2817707-very-profitable-the-simcity-social-fan-site-gaming-niche.

Such a comparison would not be valid because this is more a case of how to be smart to cash quickly with the WEB.

There are no cheats for the game really but just some tricks that exploit flaws that will soon be corrected if they start to avoid the profit with game.

But they were rapids and created the site with the call for cheats, making search engines its revenue source and now try to sale with a nice profit, since demand tends to fall in the same way as has been falling membership to the game.

No one there was interested in creating a website.. it's just to make money!

Viewing profiles is one of the things restricted to subscribed members. Another is having a custom avatar. It only costs €12 per year - a pittance - so join (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;area=subscriptions) in to support the site.

Team members are normally exempted from the subscribing rule as far as avatars go. Also, they normally don't have a badge based on how many posts you've made, so I'm thinking you're right that there's an error going on here. Of course a subscription is still a very good idea ;)
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: Swordmaster on February 16, 2013, 03:49:22 PM
If you had an avatar prior to the subscription system you could keep it. However if you change something in your profile, it's gone. So that's normal. I think the bug here is that the forum doesn't recognize you as a team member then. Off the top of my head I don't know anyone else who's part of the wiki team without being part of another team or being a subscriber, so you may be the only person in this situation.

Um, guys... is there something wrong with SC4D's database, because there are missing topics.

See here:

There were definitely topics there before.

Strange, those topics are there for me - it's probably a permissions-related issue. An admin will have to figure it out :)

In the banners that flow across the top of the page, for the one that reads, "Everyone is free is upload to SC4D LEX!", the second "is" should be changed to "to".

Whenever I do a search, either in the entire forum, or in the thread currently open, I get a maximum of 30 results on a single web page. I have looked in my profile to see whether this is a parameter that has 30 as default and I could change it, but I didn't find anything. I also did searches (with, of course, the limitation discussed here) in various topics to see whether this has already been discussed, and there too I didn't find anything. How can this limiting number of 30 search results be changed (to a larger number)?

my own topic 'DAMN Manager' (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15279.0) cant be found using search, even if I set 'most recent topic first' - last 'recent' is from 2011! :P

Title: Re: SC4 Devotion bugs and technical issues...
Post by: catty on March 12, 2014, 05:17:04 AM
It is part of the site settings, which is why you can't find anything in your profile, its something that only either Jeronij or if one of the administrator's if they have access to that area can alter, and as Yild has just pointed out the search results can sometimes leave a lot to be desired, that something that would require a site re-index and the site would have to be offline while it was done.

SC4devotion seems to be offline half the time I try to visit - it comes back online eventually, but it often takes several hours. I always check with 'isitdownrightnow' to confirm it's not just me.

Sorry about that--access for me has been patchy as well--today was the worst but things have been intermittently bad for a couple days. Wouldn't be surprised if the combined impact of Cities:Skylines and Barby's passing have just brought enough people around to push the bandwidth's limits. I'll look into it but expect it to pass shortly :)

I'm having trouble getting this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B21kyzct7Og) to embed on my MD post, even though I've gone into the video settings on YouTube and enabled embedding (and plus, it works just fine on Simtropolis). I thought the syntax for embedding YouTube videos was this:

Code: [Select]
[flash=800,500]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B21kyzct7Og[/flash]
I'm sure that should be right because I quoted another post that had a YouTube video in it, and I just quoted it to find out how I embed YouTube videos. But I can't seem to get it to work, as shown below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B21kyzct7Og

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

Try replacing the "watch?=v=" part of the URL with "/v/".  That's usually what I've had to do.

Here's a test.

I found an error when accessing the LEX API, it can't be accessed with a message that say:
Quote
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '}' in /home/jeronij/public_html/csxlex/api/v4/endpoints/lot.php on line 453

This error affect the LEX Release & LEX Spotlight block which show recent uploaded mod & random-selected mod.

I hope the SC4D webmaster fix this error, because this error is annoying to mod hunters which they search
the best mod with these blocks.

Sorry if I can't provide the image here.
Also, sorry if this reply maybe not relevant with the topic theme.

I may not be in the right thread but ...
I have only one little problem with displaying images in most of the threads I have been reading :
For instance, some posts a phrase like "I did something like this:"
Then there is a blank space and the article continues on. I copied that part into a text editor and discovered that the blank space contains an "insert image square" but is blank.

This happens quite a lot in different threads but not always, that is, I can see many images even huge ones.

Could someone give me some tips ?
Thanks

Many of us used Imageshack.
Some day, I think about two years ago, Imageshack decided to ask a fee for it's services that were free until that day. Many peolple decided not to pay the fees, or even were not around anymore and did not care. Since then many images have disappeared.
So far for using free internet services....  :'(

Yes, unfortunately ImageShack was a very popular free image host, and when they moved to only paid services a few years ago, vast swaths of Mayor Diaries, City Journals, Dev Threads, and Tutorials were wiped out in one blow. In many cases those users were long inactive, and the only versions of those images resided on ImageShack, and so are gone forever.

Many of those who were left migrated to PhotoBucket or Majhost, which made matters worse because Majhost shut down unexpectedly and permanently a few months ago, so even those members who were still active had no way of recovering their photos from the site and rehosting them elsewhere, and were forced to try and source the images from the Majhost links (not fun). The end result is even more broken threads, and much documentation and work lost forever.

I tried out Majhost for a bit, but fortunately everything was backed up on my HDD and Dropbox, which is my image host of choice these days. Dropbox is kinda slow for a lot of stuff (particularly image hosting, which they were never designed for), but I'm almost guaranteed to not have them fail on me. Another good option would be Google Drive, or the free PhotoBucket accounts or even Flickr (which takes work to source the right links, but also happens to have 1TB of free storage space). I also back everything up to Flickr, but mostly I use Dropbox because the images upload automatically and the links autogenerate with my upload software ShareX.

Long Story Short, always keep backups, never depend on free stuff to last forever, and submit everything, as much as possible, to the Internet Archive/WayBack machine for internet perpetuity. SimPeg.com is the prime example of what happens to a site that doesn't keep backups when the worst occurs.

Also a quick heads up, the Wiki may be offline/difficult to access for a little bit.  I ended up getting it changed back over from sc4devotion.com/wiki to the original wiki.sc4devotion.com, such that the old links all worked again.  It just needs the DNS to repropagate for the subdomain.  The fact that I was having to work with a temporary URL for an extended time as I was getting the site re-settled kind of complicated things there, but it should work shortly.

Edit: It's now functioning properly at wiki.sc4devotion.com (https://wiki.sc4devotion.com).

For the first time since the re-opening , I tried to send a message to some other SC4Devotion members and I failed … I can write the message but when I click on "Preview" or  "Send"  ,  I get a frozen blank page . Being the first one bringing that issue to your attention , I’m assuming that’s related to my personal account , thanks in advance for having a look at it .
