That really has a very realistic small town feel to it.

It would be nice to see an overview shot too?

Is there a direct relationship between a small town and small cars......? (see that SMART Shop in pic 1 and 3).
I like that plaza across the street from the church
Still I also see some appartment buildings in your small town. So I have a question: what is considered a small town?

Still it is a great thread Wouanagaine!

I like this thread wouanagaine.   It does really "bridge the gap" between the rural (mostly farm based) and the suburbs (edges of BIG cities).     This will be a great place for people to post what I consider "real" cities.     Not just block after block of high rise skyscrapers or acre after acre of rolling farm land.     Don't get me wrong  I love both of those.  Okay not so much with the skyscrapers.   LOL   I just know that most of the cities I have chosen to live in look alot more like what you have posted here.     Okay I think that was officially rambling on.

I agree with you wholeheartily Gaston. I only like scrapers in SC4, but I hardly ever get one to grow (must be my impatience).
I do build small towns a lot and here's a shot of one of my former small towns:

(http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/1210/curveacresoverviewvl3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here is the little centre:
(http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/6631/citycentrehh2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Yeah, yeah I know press G, before making a picture..... &mmm
That roundabout can be considered the centre. I noticed a lot of traffic passing through this town and I wondered what it was:
(http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/4856/trafficinfoiz2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Busses! Whow, healthy public transport that's for sure.  :D

That's my two cents for small towns.

EDIT: This post made me a Mayor ;D

Kool stuff NikNik.   I like the area you built it in.   The low mountains and the bend in the river reminds me of Chattanooga, TN. linkie (http://www.city-data.com/city/Chattanooga-Tennessee.html)     I like it.

Hello Ace A nice selection of wall-to-wall small town businesses. I like the block on the center of town with the church and also like the round a bout with a gazebo. I like your use of one-way streets as well. Wish I could make my towns look like yours.

Title: Village of Natori, somewhere in Japan
Post by: Asahi on February 18, 2007, 01:03:59 AM
Bravo, everyone! &apls
Let me just add my small village of Natori to this wonderful topic!

Located somewhere in the Hokuriku region of Japan, Natori is a peaceful village with no broadband internet yet. ;D

Yeah, there are some undeveloped residentals and I'm trying to raise the demand, but you get the picture. :-[

The Buddhist temple in the village and its beatiful garden attract tourists.

Autumn! Rice harverst time!! Season for festivals!! :D

A small downtown developing around the train station.

A big company is gradually buying up all the farmlands to build a factory there. Some citizens protest saying that it will destroy the historical cityscape, but without much success... &mmm

Beautiful rice field (paddies?- I'm at the edge of my knowledge, here), Asahi.

Natori looks like a sweet little village.  I'd love to see more.

Thank you David!!

The beautiful rice fields (http://www.yuhisa.com/cgi/c-board/c-board.cgi?cmd=one;no=79;id=) (or paddies, whichever's okay) I'm using extensively is the latest creation by Y.H, aka 2ch.net Simplayer. Most of the buildings are works of NOB and SOMY, famous for his industrial stuff.

In answer to your kind request, some additional pics.

Jeronij, while I didn't make full use of the terrain in this town, I can't imagine enough how lively and dynamic it would be if you were to play with these lots!

bat, I could have worked on the details better, but thank you for your comment!!

Hello Asahi - I like the picture with the train station. That close up view of the shopping district is nice because you get the feel that there is a pedestrian walkway between the buildings.
Title: Re: Show us your small towns
Post by: Asahi on February 18, 2007, 09:06:21 AM
jmyers2043:
Yes, the buildings are placed so that there's a supposed walkway between there, but in fact, all that CS buildings are just one big 3x6 LOT (http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/somy000/p2.htm) by SOMY.. :-[
So I'm not doing anything noteworthy, but thanks anyways! I'll try to depart from relying too much on individual lots when I post next time. ;)

Good morning, Asahi.    Thanks for posting these great pictures.     And for posting the link, as well.    I have only two problems.   I can not figure out where to click to download.    And, are the irrigation ditches and pathways included in the lot?

Good morning Gaston! I envy that its still Sunday morning there. It's already Monday in Japan ;D
And thank you for the accompanying Japanese text. ()stsfd()

You're talking about Y.H's rice field set right? Look for an icon of a paper with a paperclip on it. Actually you see two, but the upper one is it. Below that, you see a filename "NipponDenen.zip" and its filesize. Click on the filename to download the lot set.

And yes, the ditches/pathways are included in the set as puzzle pieces, along with several ploppable houses (eye candy). This might get too long for this forum so I'll write the details somewhere else, probably in the Japan forum. Be sure to check back later!

Thanks Asahi,
Wow that is a big file.    That is going to take a while.     Very cool looking stuff though.   I am sure it will be worth it.   I have to admit I am a bit of a Nippon-o-phile.  ( really fascinated with the Japanese culture )    It is something I have always been interested in.   I'll keep checking the Japanese forums as well.

--- Gaston

(I'll try to edit in the Japanese text later.    Once the "rice paddies" are downloaded and my computer has the resouces available)

Some beautiful cities here.   I love your farms Asahi and thanks for the links.  Downloaded lots of stuff.    &apls

My cities are usually quite small as I never zone for the big guys.   And they all have lots of parks and water running through them.

These small towns are amazing! I am just getting into trying to create more realistic looking cities rather than just playing the game. I have found it very frustrating trying to put everything together just right to make a good looking town/city. The hardest part for me is always making the roads that go through/connect the towns and cities, but thankfully I can come here and get new ideas from all of you!!

This is exactly what I was thinking.  It has a real "walkable" vibe coming from it, which is always a good thing to strive for.

But if you don't mind me asking, why the dead ends?

The town on the hills near the river (with the bridges) is lovely Mikeaut1.

The first and last picture look great too, but seem more parts of a suburban area as a small town to me... Still great though

Those first and last pictures are areas outside of a major city, so they're a little bigger than the "small towns" we've been seeing in this thread.  :P

Khiyana, that looks very nice, although I am somewhat curious how small a town can be when it has a subway station.

Anyway, here's a small town I built right on the edge of a tile, near a larger city.  Unfortunately not all the industrial has been built yet.

Khiyana,

I agree with TTC. Very good work of you.
I especially like the last picture. You have some buildings from different styles here (sorry for bad English...), but color shifting (less saturation?) works very well. All buildings look well fitted now.
I like also the ground on the slope. It looks very good, also the viewpoint and trail park.
Subway station on the roundabout - no problem. It looks very well in the small city centre. Maybe it is not an underground staion at all?  ;)

eljacko: very nice place. Maybe remove some industrial zones and make some small commercials instead?

This is the downtown area for a small town I've been working on lately named Rockwell Valley. The picture is really outdated and old. I'd post a more updated picture but the CD drive on my computer is busted and without the CD, I can't load the game to take any pictures...

Right now, the downtown area still looks similar to this, but it's a little denser and there are more trees.

szarkoz,
You showed very interesting pictures (at least for me). You created a typical polish rural landscape. I think about:
1. The shape of residential zones. These are not regular rows or another kind of square grid - houses are built along streets or make irregular groups.
2. Small and stretched out fields, some of them irregular. They look completely different from american and other large fields. It is also typical for Poland (and maybe some other european countries, especially in Eastern Europe).
3. Fields on slopes. It makes very interesting effect. As I know, Jeronij makes something similar in his Great Canyon region, but I don't know anybody else who makes something like this.
A little suggestion: try to make some paths/dirt roads between fields - not too much. Use more space - the effect will be much better. Try to make some small, smooth hills and cover them completely by fields, making road/path in the valley. (of course it's only my opinion - you decide). I like your work

wilko_1978: Very nice climate of these pictures. Also, nice couple of buildings and good planning

wouanagaine: very good - as always  &apls

It's my first post on here.

I've loved looking at everyone's small towns.  Great way of seeing how other people play the game and they've given me some new ideas.

Here are some pics of Dean Bay, a town of 5,500 that is next to the capital of my Dornelles region.  Commuters travel to the big city by elevated rail or ferry.  There is some industry and farming in town for those who don't want to travel too far to work.

Central to this bay side town is the resort hotel and the beaches.  I was offered the resort hotel reward really early in the life of this town - which was nice.

You'll see there is a small boardwalk area.  the houses are low wealth at the moment, but with such a great location I am hoping they'll upgrade soon - maybe I'll put some parks in nearby to encourage them.  Maybe I also need to give them a school and clinic as they are some distance from the existing ones.

I've provided a close up of the "Wandsworth Wedge", one of my favourite buildings by GasCooker - I think his work is excellent and this buiding perched on a slight hill dropping down to the beach looks perfect there.  I can almost imagine looking out of one of those windows on the corner on a nice sunny day.

Anyway, I hope you like Dean Bay and I'd love to hear your comments and any suggestions for improvements or different ideas.

(First post, so hope the pictures are there!)

Hi Thomas,

In your 5th picture - I really like the small petrol station.  Where did you get that one?  I don't think I've seen it before.

Your town does have that "small town feel" about it.

I've only posted once before and had trouble getting the pictures loaded, so I think you've done a good job.

@paroch: That station was created by royal, one of the SFBT members. You should find it at the STEX, but I'm planning to upload it to the LEX as well. It's an ARAL station, a very common sight in Germany.

And while I'm at it, let me say that I really enjoy the pics posted in this thread. Personally, I always feel the urge to develop large cities, so this is a welcome change.

Hmm...it might work if you change it from .png to .jpg.  When you try and post it, just put the link [ img ]<--- inside of these things (without the spaces) --->[ /img ] and it should show up.

Your towns look nice and tidy!  I really like the look of that grass in the second pic, and I like the variety of housing in the first.  Very nice work!

Masochist,
Thanks, yeah I really do try to make my towns as neat as possible without making them overly homogeneous.
I am kind of a detail oriented freak in that regard, so you can imagine getting the "right" building in the "right" place takes time and is tedious... I guess that slows down my construction...

Hi, everyone,

I'm not sure I should post my town yet.   &Thk/(  Am I ready to show it with the likes of that mosaic?  szarkoz, that is such a nice grouping of residential, and the downtown has such character and culture.  I love to see those fields rolling up the hillsides.  Ennedi, I think I might be able to pick out a pic of yours from a group now, because you have a sort of Van Gogh effect about your pictures in the sense that the vivid colors and the luscious greenery are very affecting.  Those coastal pics are quite alive.  There is something endearingly familiar about wilko's and seahawks' towns.  Wou, you're in your own category, we know, and thanks for making this thread.  thomasAH, that is a great first post; that bridge just screams back water beauty.  Well, here goes nothin'...  &blush

A typical morning in Robertson might begin pretty early...

Heading into town, we drive past the bowling alley, implement dealer, and Farm Bureau.  Looks like Sobchak Lanes hasn't opened yet for Monday Morning Mens' League.

Motoring onward, we see that there is some new construction on the west end of Main; I heard that Smith and Kline Annuities was opening a branch...

... and a block or so further east is the Village Square, and headquarters of Robertson's finest, just changing shifts.

Next we pass the much-photographed Dubrinski Block, stopping at the Panera Bread Company for a nice warm bagel...

...before checking in for the day shift at the McCormick Spice Company.

Then, it's back home again for a few winks before we do it all over again.

Such is the life of a Robertsonian.

Thanks for looking in, comments and suggestions are most welcome.   :sunny:

Bye for now.

Livin in Sim,

Thank you very much for your nice words!  It's a great pleasure to hear if someone has nice associations looking at my pictures  :)

Of course you should post your town - and not only one I hope  ;)
The first pic is my favourite - great sunrise light, the back alley fits very well here
I also like the second one. Wildflowers at the intersection - a little but very nice detail  Maybe you would like to think about filling 3 single empty tiles in the right part of this picture (above, below and to the right of Sobchak Lanes) - by anything, just to harmonize
textures?
I like also the recreational space between industrial and residential/commercial area on 6th picture
Very nice town, more please

Hello Skell I like your pictures a lot. Particularly that you placed SimGoobers Farm Bureau next to the block of commercials. I usually put Goobers Bureau at the outskirts of my towns but I think that Ill do what you did now. Thanks for the idea.

The prominent building in that last picture. I take it that it is a meat packing plant? With a stockyard inside the perimeter fence? Good job.

Nice settlement Nedalezz. I particularly like the compact layout, and the mixture of trees and the way they partially obscure the roads and streets. The foreshore shows really good composition with the merging of the trees, different rocks and water.

The first picture, with the sun, is excellent.

Here's a few pics of the town of Meridian I'm working on.  It's a small town of about 30,000(at least in simcity, in RL it might be closer to 15,000) based around the kinds of things I see in small towns in central and east Texas.

Main Street, with the city hall in the center.

An aerial view of the local High School, with the athletic complex built around it.  The major road on the right side of the pic is Hwy 190, with 21(right in front of the school), coming off of it going to the west.

Founder's Park near downtown, with the County Courthouse in the lower left hand corner.  Oh yea, you can't have a town in Texas without a Sonic and a Dairy Queen(the dairy queen is over near the school, look back at the last picture, top right, look for the red sign.)  Well.... maybe without a sonic.

And an overview.  I'm not a big fan of grids.  ;)

Nascar_guy: I like the little shopping center.  The pic looks just like real life where they've built interstates to bypass the little towns that the old roads used to actually go through.  So the town just builds up to the new road... only thing missing is the plethora of gas stations around the exit.

bwatterud: Didn't find it.  It's a bat project I did several months ago.  Here's an additional shot of it at night, no photoshopping this time:

I almost got around to releasing it, but between not wanting to deal with readme's and such at the time, and after having a few rendering problems with some extra fields I was going to release I gave up on it.  If anyone in here wanted to do the final leg work, I'll send them all the files for it, or maybe I'll eventually get around to it.

Great pictures from everyone here.  That football field is impressive both as a BAT and in its scale - it's far bigger than the high school.  I guess that says a lot about the priority of sports over education..?

Here's a shameless MD promotion picture of the center of the town of Oilton, a small NC piedmont town of 7,000 (and growing, because of suburban sprawl)

Wow Pytkowski, those pictures are great.  I like the layout, very representative of a small town.  But my favorite part is the church surrounded by those w2w buildings.  On top of it the photoshopping really brings out the photos.

From the looks of it, my friend, it's an American football stadium. You can tell by the numbers and markings on the field. Though, I'm sure it can be used for other sports as well. Hope this answers your question!

The stadium is indeed for American football, though I have also made a dual purpose field texture that also can be used for soccer, as is common in the U.S., that would be in any final release, which is in the works.

First of all, welcome to SC4D. Second of all, the small town effect is really well done and you have show a great use of custom content. One thing I would suggest would be to get rid of those udi icons (it's not too noticable, but that just seems to improve a pic so well). Also, you can access the game phot option by pressing ctrl+shift+s and that will allow you to minimize the toolbar for the photo (unless that is a desired element of the pic of course). Please, show more.

I don't find it to be all that common. Soccer fields are usually totally seperate (and not as well maintained  $%Grinno$%)

Most of the high schools in my area have dual purpose soccer/football fields, but the stadiums aren't nearly as big as chrisadams's.

Thanks. I've been at ST for a while, figured I'd migrate over here.

Yeah, I never put a whole lot of thought in to photos. I mean, I don't go in, turn off options, minimize things... I just snap a pic. I'll take that in to consideration next time I take some shots, though.

Aaah! hadn't show'd up over here in a few days.  missed a few good pics.

Danthe:  I really like that town.  There's lots of diversity in the street layout and the building style is a little different from what I usually see.  Really like the market place at the town center

Figui:  Nice little port town. Though it seems like Some ting's wong there, guess they really like chinese food ;).  Simgoober'd be proud.
On a serious note, the terraforming and tree placement is really cool and really accentuate the small town feel.  It just seems to suddenly pop out of the rural landscape, then fade back into it just as quickly.  The commercials just need a little more diversity.

It's very interesting!

I have a strange feeling - this image distortion is shifting my attention to some particular details: an underground parking, Towne Bank entrance, the billboard... And this house in the bottom right corner is my favourite!

But of course it can be the case described by RippleJet :D and maybe I was playing too much too... but it always causes interesting experiences  :D

The intersection of the Coast Highway and McWilliams Street in the small town of New Barrington in Santa Maria Parish, Costa del Tuskalusa. Founded in 1744 as a landing for coastal barques shortly after England took control of Costa del Tuskalusa, the town burned in 1887 and was rebuilt in the Victorian style. In 1890 the North Coast Railway passed 1/2 mile inland of the old pier and the town grew to meet New Barrington Station. In the late 1950's a few of the historic buildings were torn down for new commercial structures and public outrage quickly lead to the formation of the historic district on the Coast Highway. Today, New Barrington is a bedroom community a few miles outside of the City of Tuskalusa, most citizens commute to the city by train. The fire station on the corner serves as the fire station, police station, and city offices as it has since 1889.

Nice pictures everyone! It's nice to see small towns receive all this attention.

Big Slark: That has to be one of best combinations of my stuff and JB's that I have seen. Matt's fire station serves as the perfect anchor for your town. I like the building on the opposite corner with the big parking lot. A lot of old small towns have that one lot that was cleared and rebuilt with a modern sprawl building set way back from the street with ample parking. Nice touch.

Thank you, spa. I thought about bulldozing Pussy Cleaners and the Tire Store (I think its by Deadwoods), then I got to thinking about how old Main Streets were "modernized" in the 1950's and 60's, so I left it.

Cheers,

Khiyana:  That's a fairly well composed image.  I love the sidewalks and how they are integrated into the other paths in the city.  The building with the arsenal mural on the back is also rather interesting, what is it out of curiosity?

Duvad:  I like the building styles in the residentials in your pics, and the fences you've put around them look great, I've always disliked how many maxis houses don't have fences.  I'm asumming that took a long time in LE, lol.  The street layouts are also interesting and varied.  My only critique is that the commercials could be more representative of the area, they look a little displaced.  And are the large open areas pastures or sports fields of some kind?

Anyway, I had some time to play as well, lol.  This is just downtown, I'm sure I'll get around at intervals to showing some of the rest of the town.

Yeah, I've been trying to redo the commercial area with more wall to wall non-Maxis buildings... but for some reason the Dusktrooper mod isn't working. And those green fields are actually cricket grounds.:p Cricket is the 2nd most popular sport in the world, a bat and ball game like baseball but quite different, and is more popular in British-colonised areas such as the Carribean and Asia.

Unfortunately, mes amis, les chevaux were not included (and I think not even possible, given SC4's aversion to in-game animation) by the French creator of the hyppodrome.

And I agree - the picture of yours must have been taken around my last visit to the Normandy - the weather was just as inclement..  &apls

JMyers: those come of one of the Japanese sites and are a bit of a fluke since I did not know really what I was downloading. I just changed the texture to match that of the sea walls..

Khiyana, your picture is beautiful! I like it very much

Yes, lower parkings (with diagonal cars) look very good, but these upper ones can be very useful too, especially in small cities.
Is the bus stop an integral part of the parking?
I suppose this small plaza on the left side was also lot edited by you, am I right?
And please tell me which rail station you used? We can see only a part of it, but it looks very nice and realistic!

That does look incredibly real. Praedikat: Sehr Gut!

Methinks that station is (perchance modified?) Driebergen-Zeist, found on the STEX (or was it LEX?), a model of the real thing in Holland..?

@zakuten
Very interesting bridges in the mountain :)

@Ennedi
There are a explanation about the parking-lots in this thread: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1112.100 (in the middle)
And yes, I have made a lot of custom parks and plazas matching jeroni's street side mod ;)
The train station is Driebergen Zeist, you can find it at the STEX: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=18074&v=1 (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=18074&v=1), I have'nt modified it.
Maybe the other parking-lots will be released...

And thank you again

Oh... porter, that's wonderful. With pines and hills it'd remind me of living in Washington (state).

I love the smooth curves and empty space, which I've never pulled off well in SC4 (though in SC2k I think I mastered the very same thing). Nice houses, I never had the patience to grow custom homes... they were always so hard to get in.  &apls

Hi - I this is my first-ever posting for the sake of sharing a picture, and first mosaic. From a new region I am working on, based on Ashtabula County, Ohio, this is Saybrook-on-the-Lake, which lies just west of Ashtabula (city) and along the Lake Erie shoreline. I hope you enjoy it!

Absolutely outstanding work (to both of you)!

homefryes- those power poles are an awesome detail- they really add to the detail of both mosiacs.
Fairlane - your pic has a great quality overall... very well put-together (I think that's a rough way of saying the whole thing is superb and no single detail outshines the rest).

Thanks so much, meinhosen! I'm really pleased with them, though getting them properly placed takes a LOT of time and patience!

LE0 - that's actually a Maxis standard-issue high-wealth mansion lot ... not a custom piece. I guess it may seem out of scale, but it's actually one of my favorite houses.  ;)

@all: Nice small towns, I always enjoy visiting this thread.

Now it's time to show one of mine. The "small" town I will show you today has around 200.000 inhabitants and is a popular suburb of Krung Thanbu, the capital of Kaibesia, my MD and CJ. Hope you like it:

You can find a lot of squatters there:

Hope you like it, although it's not actually a "small" town, but compared to Krung Thanbu, it is small!
Title: Re: Show us your small towns
Post by: mike3775 on May 23, 2009, 10:30:32 AM
feliwi, very beautiful city you have there

20,000 can indeed be considered a small town.  Where I live, only has 13,000 people and its considered a town(a vote a couple years ago decided to remain a town), and I have been in what I consider a city with populations of 35,000 and they are actually still towns

A couple questions though

1.  Is that a custom made lot for the elevated High Speed Rail?

2.  Is that a custom made bridge on the avenue that seems to go from Ave to Ground highway and back to Ave?
Title: Re: Show us your small towns
Post by: feliwi on May 23, 2009, 01:15:03 PM
@mike3775: I know what you mean, for European or American condition this would never be called a small town, but for Asia these definitions just do not count, everything's bigger, more chaotic and more Asian ;)

About your questions. the HSRP station isn't custom made, the basis can be found here:
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=17950# (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=17950#)

The rest are simple overhanging lots for oneway roads for usage under elevated transport system to make them look more realisitic. You can find them on this website:
http://tadasu29.sakura.ne.jp/bat-ALLstyle.html (http://tadasu29.sakura.ne.jp/bat-ALLstyle.html)

The bridge over the avenue is a Japanese production as well, but I don't know any more, where I found, just post to the japanese bat gallery thread, they will tell you, for sure!

Anyway, glad you like it!

for this reason, here comes another pic:

Great towns, everybody. Especially yours Yan. I visited France in January this year, and the mix of BATs really looks superbly French.

Nexis4Jersey. It doesn't make sense to me that you elevated the 6 lane highway, to allow a road to pass level underneath. Otherwise, your township looks very nice to me.

Some little testing I have been doing, playing with all the new stuff. A little town I'm growing, just hit 4500 citizens. Playing a 3x3 Medium tile region atm, to get back into the game, this is the centre tile, and the first one. So its got a few flaws I learned how to cope with afterwards.

The goal is trying to develop some kind of organic growth to the city, I do this by replacing the fields one by one, and trying not to demolish existing infrastructure/buildings unless absolutely needed.
I'm also working with a very shallow pluginsfolder.

Sorry, you gotta click the thumb, and press continue to view. 1680x1050@3096kB PNG.

Mine too is more of a village rather than a small town, but i'll show a few pictures anyway.

This is a British styled village from my MD. (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9597.0) Sorry for all the undeveloped land at the moment, most of which will be used for agriculture.

Those are some beautiful houses. Though I think they are a little repetitive, they blend beautifully with everything. Where is the school/soccer field in the last picture from?

I've changed it a little in the LE, but the original lot is deadwoods' small country school, which is here (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=490) on the LEX  and here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=14372) on the STEX.

Hi Phil and Jordan!

Nice pictures coming from both of you.

Phil it's good to see some Vermont pictures coming from you, I saw that your MD hadn't been as active over at ST, and I'm hoping to see it again.

Jordan I think that your city is almost perfect after looking at it. I think one thing that could make it better would be to add some farms on the outskirts.

This here's Ceto, a small town in my revived MD region-- I moved back over to ST because I was afraid of running afoul of the rules, but forgive me for plugging my MD with a link; it's just getting rebuilt, and I hope to try to make it somewhat interactive, for example, which cities to showcase and letting commenters decide what to do with plots of land, etc.

Here's a small town and farming hamlet nestled between two mountain ranges in my region of Mastlupontaq. The city is called Terathiponl. (Whaddya think of the names, crazy, huh? I randomly typed stuff in until it sounded cool.)

Here's the great wall built long ago that shielded the village from attacking hordes. It was built to span the narrow valley that held the hamlet of Terathiponl. It stretches over a hundred feet into up, and is anchored into the bedrock of the mountain with great beams built by civilizations long ago. The initial walls can be seen at the base of the great wall, smaller walls better suited to a small fortress. They are dwarfed by the massive defense wall. You can also see the tunnel built for the trains constructed much later stretching out of the far left of the wall.

Similar shot.

A view of the small town with outlying farm lands.

The keep built at the base of the wall, where the only way in and out of it existed. Today, people enter the town by driving through a tunnel built under the wall.

A small farming hamlet south of the town.

And here's a picture of the entire town, outlying farmlands, and southern hamlet.

Very cool stuff. Now that I know what inspired the shot, I'm kind of interested in giving this kind of city a whirl. I'm not usually one for this type of style, but that certainly is a fantastical concept and got my mind racing. I think it'd be interesting to see how it could work with one monolithic structure surrounded by sprawling concentric circles of tightly controlled dystopian development. Think City 17 from Half-Life 2:

MOD Edit, I changed your pictures in thumbnails since they're not from SC4 and are quite large. A discussion is great and very appreciated, but try to keep non SC4 images as small as possible, especially if they're really beautiful :)

Hey everybody. I wanted to gather some opinions on the following image. It compiles a few older pics I took of an area I am still fine tuning. As part of a compilation of MD content, I have created the following shot that is sort of a chamber of commerce advertisement/postcard for those visiting or looking to take a lazy vacation visit to the village of Torri in my region. Would you visit this sleepy burg known for its b&bs, small town charm, riverwalk, and coastal isolation?

I agree, looks like a great place to visit (and a well-done city). Since you asked for a critical eye I tried doing so--the only thing I would suggest is to SAM-ify your streets, maybe with asphalt or the gray stone. That's just a matter of taste though. Excellent shots!

Thank you all for the comments. If you want to see more, first of all that makes me very happy and I appreciate the sentiment. Secondly, you'll have to wait for my forthcoming MD, which should be arriving within the month. Can't you feel the hype machine churning?!?!  ::)  ::)  ::)

Since you asked for a critical eye I tried doing so--the only thing I would suggest is to SAM-ify your streets, maybe with asphalt or the gray stone.

I have often thought about this for some areas. My only concern is the limits imposed by SAM's lack of integration with the SFBT street tree mod (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1196) - to this day my favorite cosmetic sc4 mod. Does anyone know a workaround short of doing the painful work of adding such details myself, a task for which I am woefully under-skilled? I have seen that jeronij has a version of his sidetreet mod (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1364) designed specifically for SAM. Would this interact as poorly with the SFBT mod as I think, both in functionality and looks?

\o/ Ive been hoping you would decide to start an MD so I can see more of your work :) and to answer your question I dont think they would work very well together, but Ive never used them together
Title: Re: Show us your small towns
Post by: noahclem on August 26, 2010, 11:34:48 AM
I suspect the two wouldn't work well together either, which is a shame. I had looked into changing my streets so they had hableurg's asphalt textures by default some time back (would that work with the SFBT street mod?) but lost most of my free time shortly after--i'd (or you'd) have to re-IID everything as instructed here:  http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1617.msg322335#msg322335 (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1617.msg322335#msg322335)

Just a stab in the dark but you never know I guess. Good luck with your MD, I look forward to it  :)

The SFBT Steet Tree Mod will be updated for the SAM as well. Some German users at SimForum provided me with new T21 exemplar files and parking lot props, but so far, I didn't have a chance to test them and integrate them properly into the mod. It's on my list, though, like quite a few other things - if only RL wouldn't get in the way that often...  :-[

At the moment, not really. For mods like those, the most time-consuming thing is 1) creating the actual files (which has been done since a while for most items) and 2) weeding out the bugs (which is somewhat complicated, as you have to edit the files and restart the game to see how it works countless times - still in progress), and then of course there is 3) packaging (won't take that long). Thing is, I rarely have some free time for a couple of hours straight (which is required for proper bugfixing), hence it's taking so long, unfortunately.

ilmioalterego, welcome to SC4D!

I have always thought that you can't create anything good with only Maxis-buildings, but this actually looks pretty good! Very simple, but still quite realistic and has a great peaceful feeling in it! :) Hope to see more from you, and I believe that you will make quick progress, as you seem to have the skills for it already!

Yes, I do like. Which canals did you use?

I atually didn't use a canal; In this case I've used the PEGponds 1/4 tahoe tiles with gravel textures from Pegasus and some of the RRP stuff. :)
In other parts of my Dutch region I also use BSC canal set: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=891 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=891)

Hi Matthijs,

Ah, I thought you had edited PEG's ponds and streams set for Dutch canals. This is namely exactly what I have in mind to do one of these days. I am also working on a Dutch region (check my flag.... you did already, of course). I think of making some prop families of weed and reed props and put them on the PEG streams. Or maybe I make new canal lots by placind the Tahoe pond props and weeds etc .... I will see what I can make.
At the moment busy with growable Dutch farm lots.... Stage 1 is finished, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are coming.....
I really shoud put the stage 1 lots on th thread. Maybe I'll find time this week.
Did you check my thread? You'll find some windmill lots there. I'd like to get some reactions.

To me, the definition of a small town is a population less than 20K.  I base that on where I live, which the latest census shows has a population of 14K, and is run by a town board.  According to the state laws, my town is classified as a class I town(the largest possible) and run by an elected town board with 7 districts, 2 of them at large, but it could also be classified as a class III city(the smallest city possible) and have a mayor, a 7 member town board with 3 at large seats(meaning it would only have 4 districts).  In 2008 elections, it was put to a vote, and the citizens of the town voted down by a 2-1 margin on becoming a class III city and instead to remain a town, but the town board then hired a town manager who answers to the town board, but is the main spokesperson for the town, meaning that he is the face of the town.  My town has a mixture of farming, small business, and is mainly houses with a few apartment complexes spread around the town, and has 35 miles of streets in its boundary.    In Simcity terms, my town would be considered a big city and already have huge demands for more and more commercial and industrial, even though in real life, my town has very little of that and the main jobs are located in other towns/cities.

I like the town Terring, looks great

Well, this is one of the first times I've shared my cities on here.  I hope you enjoy.  I create "realistic" style cities with every possible retail and restaurant, hotel and commercial services....depending on the size of the city.

Now, with that being said, I welcome YOU to the town of "Manchester".  POP: 9,124.  This is outer lying town in the "Lawrenceburg" metropolitan area.  It has yet to be "taken in" and swallowed by the urban sprawl so it attracts those that like the "small town" feel.  It was established in the the late 1800's and serves as the "government seat" of this area.

ENJOY!

Thaty never bothers me, because not everyone wants to download huge lots and multiple dependencies either.  My sister has SimCity 4 and she has never downloaded anything user created.  She has seen me play the game with all my downloaded stuff and mods, and she doesn't want to go through the hassles of downloading alot of stuff to play a game.

I love this with traffic being diverted off the high street onto a mini relief route...although my one criticism would be that as Tesco is arguably an "anchor store" (ie an attractor point for the town) it should theoretically have some access directly onto your through routes (ideally from the roundabout) and have ample parking for your sims to dump the car, do some shopping and enjoy what your town has to offer.

take a spin (http://goo.gl/maps/sSt6k) to see what I mean!

The combo works together quite well I think, not to mention two-story diagonal W2Ws are a rare commodity so expect more to come.  ;)

This is a small town I've made. I named in Hydreora, from the word "hydro" ("water" in Greeks) and Meteora (a unique rock formation in central Greece). The challenge here was to make the town fully suitable to the local environment by terraforming the landscape as less as possible.

The only way to access Hydreora is by underground railroad and aerospace carriers, although there are plans for building road bridges as well.

Optin Town is a small town which was build under strict environmental criteria. The challenge here was to build a city that provides the highest living standards to its citizens possible with the lowest environmental footprint possible. This means the the construction and the running of the city must utilizes green energy sources, environmental friendly technologies, plenty of green zones and mass transit, and minimize terraforming. In other words, a city that respects the landscape.
