When planning a city it would be a kewl to have a tool one could use to know the amount of total grids in a new city using a few mouse clicks.  A grid counter if you will..., that just gives the total sum, or, allows for a mouse drag that gives that detailed count used in the specific query.  It could perhaps even highlight the center four tiles or allow for groupings; like show blocked units 24-tiles by 24-tiles (or 36x36...) in orange across the city.  It really could go one step further and give suggestive zoning if "Easy" game mode was selected.

Maybe there is already something that does this although I've not seen it...

Thanks for your time!

There is a cheat code that may be of use for you. Press ctrl + x and enter "TerrainQuery". If you select the query tool then, you will get information on the coordinate position (in tiles) of a specific tile, as well as its height level.

A grid counter is not really needed. There is a standard set by Maxis when the game was made.
This was posted on ST once back in the days:

QuoteEvery tile is equal to 16 by 16 meters.
There are 5,280 feet in a mile, which roughly converts to 1609 meters.
About 1609 meters / 16 meters per tile = 100.584 tiles.
There you have it.

Also, if it's any help, one small city is 64 tiles wide by 64 tiles,
a medium city is 128 by 128
and a large one is 256 by 256.
