Title: Beaujolais Valley - Country of The Ten Villages
Post by: Steamrobin on July 24, 2009, 05:22:50 AM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg216.imageshack.us%2Fimg216%2F4492%2Fstbeaujolaisvalleylogo8s.jpg&hash=414e0274001fe63eb7fc9404f1c61a7a3d910758)

Welcome to my first ever City Journal focused on a rural country I will create with the help of Purple, my lover in real life. She is passionate by wine (but not alcoholic !) and I am passionate by SC4 (and surely addict...). Our goals for this country and CJ are multiples: talking about one of the best French wine country (beyond the "Beaujolais Nouveau"); creating a French inspired rural country; showing and testing some of my Bat and Lots (like my Ruralset)... Enjoy !

Note : I have started this CJ in Simtropolis but I wanted to share it with SC4D community as my first try to participate on this site. Till now, I didn't dare to participate here... But at this moment, after 3 months spent to read forums and to try to bat/Lot ( Steamrobin Ruralset (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21822) ) I feel ok to make a try here.
Thanks for your indulgence ^^

Steamrobin,
Welcome to SC4D.  Not too sure why you would never dare to participatet til now, we are all very friendly here and really enjoy seeing new MDs.
I look forward to seeing what you have for us.  If you need anything just drop me a PM!

Hope to see you around a lot more.

Thank for your welcome rooker1.
In fact, this site appears quite elitist as the contents are so marvelous and well done.
No matter, I have finally dared to enter here !

Next entries in this journal will show the steps of the Beaujolais Valley country map creation, each of the main villages creation, showcases of the SC4 custom contents I will use (some made by myself), infos about wines and wine growing...

I must thank Purple for the help she accepts to provide to me to try to make this Journal the best it could !

For a first glance at the real Beaujolais country, visit :
www.home-attitudes.com/beaujolais_content.html

Now, Ladies and Gentleman, please, let me show you one screen I made to give you an idea of the spirit of the work we will do here :
(Comments and feedbacks are very welcome here, about all the subjects covered by our CJ).
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F6183%2Fsteamrobinbeaujolaisval.jpg&hash=350f612c224d560c2e2878211890041cfc797916)
Vineyards and rural items (except of the rural trails) are part of my Ruralset (Steamrobin Ruralset on the Stex), some are in touch for a next release (Vineyards and Rural Cabins).

Below, a map I made that show the Ten Villages we will focused on and the SC4 country map border I will create :

At this early step, I am switching between google map, google earth and some sources I already have about wines.
Hard to fix what will be exactly the limits of this region, but I can show you this map that is surely the good one as all the villages and some other scenic places are presents (Belleville Highway and harbor for example).
Your feedbacks are welcome to improve or correct this step.

As you can see, it will be a small country map of 6 big cities (approx. 4 km width).

That's a really great presentation of the region, and you first ingame picture looks very promisive!

I had a close contact with Beaujolais  :D (not in the region you present, but on the Atlantic Coast near Biarritz) and these are very nice memories for me  :)

Welcome at SC4D and good luck in the MD section!

Pffff...
I worked really hard the last days (almost one week) to create my SC4 map for the Beaujolais Valley.
Often, I thought to give it up since it was sometime so difficult and discouraging.
But now, after many many search in google to find a contour map of the Beaujolais country and many many tries to create one, I have made one that I find pretty good for my need !

I have prepared a poster to show it to you and some give you some explanations about my process and my difficulties.

More to come...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg50.imageshack.us%2Fimg50%2F6183%2Fsteamrobinbeaujolaisval.jpg&hash=d85819a78ef53405e0ecbfa971015945e9820061)

PS : if someone, now, tell me that the map I was searching exists and is free, I ll surely die... ;o))

Steamrobin.....interesting name to along with a very interesting start to an MD.  I wonder how you came up with that name.
I'm glad you didn't give up on the map, although I do have to agree with you about terraforming, I find it very difficult at the best of times.  Anyways, I think you did a fantastic job.
One last little point....please put your replies and your new post together in one post as advancement through the different MD sections is based on post count.  Thanks in advance. ;)

I look forward to seeing more from you,
Robin

Hello SteamRobin!

I love the beaujolais (but I don't drink it of course, I cannot $%Grinno$%). So, you come from France, and are you born in the region you're doing? Because it should be very interesting how you reproduce it ;). The region you chose is very nice, I passed there when I went to holidays to Grasse (06).
Very nice region

First, some answers :
@ rooker1 : Hihi... I was thinking the same thing about your name ! My Pseudo is made from my first name which is... Robin ^^ Thanks for your compliment !
@ Albus of Garaway : Thank a lot. I did some improvements on the vineyard. Hope you would like them even better when I will publish them...
@ Sciurus : Merci pour tes encouragements. No, I am not from this country. I am from Lille. Quite the opposite... For no-french people, Lille is at the top north of France.
@ Battlecat : Thanks a lot. I hope this update will please to you.
@ Bobbi : Salut mon ami ! I hope you d like this update. Et Mille mercis pour tes encouragements !

Then, the (big) update :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg269.imageshack.us%2Fimg269%2F6183%2Fsteamrobinbeaujolaisval.jpg&hash=1e223ae96f20b238331a89f123a08ac94c73bab6)

For the next updates, I plan to create more houses and buildings to be able to finish Belleville and start a place with vineyards and small villages (although not yet the "famous ten").
I will surely create some very visual shop signs devoted to this country (wine, restaurants, etc.) and will try to create family props to give some random to the growth or plop of my houses and buildings.
Keep in touch !

@ danielcote : Thanks a lot my friend

@ Sciurus : Merci pour le conseil. I have so many things to handle.
For now, I am fighting with all the versions I found in the Stex and the Lex for the embankments, the roads and the trees. Many are beautiful but not suitable for my needs. Beside, I am not sure to have the good version of this european road mod. Would you be kind enough to give me the link ? Merci d'avance ^^

@ H72387 : Many thanks !
@ Bobbi : Merci cher ami. En disant "spéciaux", tu veux dire "exceptionnels", n'est ce pas ? Car "spéciaux" pourrait-être un peu péjoratif ! lol ^^
@ Yan077 : Guillaume et toi allez être content : I am installing the good files for the euro road texture. Euh, I hope ^^ So many plugins, so many versions. A game in a game to find the good ones !
@ Battlecat : Many thanks. I hope, effectively, that this Beaujolais Valley will be somewhat unique...
@ Gaston : Of course I will share these Bats and Lots. As soon as I will be completely satisfy by them. So many improvements are yet to do... Thans for your encouragements (and patience...) !
@ djvandrake : May I tell you something really secret ? Me neither I ve never been in Beaujolais ! Happily, my fiancée, Purple, knows it pretty well. And she gives me a lot of help while creating the map but also, some sort of coaching while creating my Bats and lots. In fact, I went neer Beaujolais many times, but each time, I was on the Highway that cross the France from North to "côte d'Azur". For sure, next time I can, I will spent some time there... But, for now, chutttt ! That is a scret between us, ok ?

Now, may I post here some infos relative to the plugins I am using to go further in the discussion we had about euro road textures ?
It was not an easy task to find the good road plugins, nor all the other "good" stuffs around...
Since I am "working" (!) again on SC4 only from a few monthes, I had to check all these new stuffs like plugins and tools to manage or create them.
For my own needs, I use to take screenshots of my SimCity4 StartupManager directories in goal to keep a sort of log of my development profil. In case of the need to recreate one profil after a crash (I had this issue sometime...). Of course, I often backup the SimCity 4 StartupManager.cfg file (at the root of the simcity4 folder).

So, I find it a good to publish here my plugins screenshots, in goal to share our knowledge about the best plugins or to give someone infos about what plugins I am using in my Beaujolais Valley.

Among this, I find it a good way to give tribute to the authors of all these marvelous plugins !

(//img%5D%3Cbr%20/%3E%5Bimg%20alt=%5Dhttp://img145.imageshack.us/img145/7379/pluginslisting01r2c1.jpg)

PS : I can't publish this entry without paying a tribute to the author of SimCity 4 StartupManager, Jean-Luc Picard. A really usefull tool even if pretty hard to handle at the begining. Actually, I could not work without it and I strongly recommand it ! Below, a screen of this tool while editing the profils.

Feedback are really welcome !

Ohlala!! The number of different plugins! :'( Make folders, beacause when you search something, I understand you don't find $%Grinno$%. So, I adive you to do many folders, and to class your plugins by author, or by thing it is (school, hospital...) ;)
Translation : Because, what a mess!. So, I wish you good luck, and I'm happy you downloaded the good version of the EuroMord ::)
Ah, if you have a problem, PM me, I'm threr for that ;) I try to help people.

@ Sciurus : lol... If you take a look again on that (not so long) list you will see that almost all the folders are opened. But, in fact, when these folders are closed, it appears that they are classified. Sometime by thematic (Residential, other...) or by team (BSC, Pegasus, etc.). I ve tried lot of classification and ofr now, this one, that mix some logics is the best for my use. But I am really curious to see other's screens. A curiosity that was very strong at the early beginning of my search for plugins...

@ Bobbi : You french is really not so bad. And best than my Chinese... About my plugins, yes, I have to clean it up. But I am still testing few things like trees for example. I am really not sure to use customed ones even if I must admit that they are really nice. About these trees, I find them to much detailed and often too colored for my need. What I like in Maxis trees is that they are quite discreet, they act on the map like a layer with not to much details to distract the eyes for from the focus we are searching. I find some tree really convenients for maps like 3Rivers but in my case, I like to keep them visibility low. But, as I am not sure yet of my final decision or to have the good ones, I am still trying them and don't remove them from my list...
Baside this, if you notice some other plugins that I could deactivate, tell me. It could be interesting for me to have your advice... PS : longe is the word for a horse furniture, longue is the word you wanted to say I presume ^^

Salu steamrobin!

Je t'ai di dans notre MP que je va vener ... quand j'ai dit a mon ami Dave (tooheys): Le vacance ils sont finis!  :D

Ooookay ... even though the Alsace and therefore the Frensch border isn't far away from here my English is way better then my French ...

Anyway: There's a lot of work and preparation in your MD, even BATs (I never got there ...) and the first pictures look great.

I am patriculary curious about that fort and how you did it as there is almost nothing adequate available for any Kind fortifications younger than Middle Age - be it Vauban Style like e.G. Neuf Brisach be it the masonry or concrete bunkers of e.G. Reims or Verdun.

For the trees I would try Simfox's trees. IMHO they are state of the art at the moment.

Take care!

Bernhard

Well this is just fantastic. You have a great artistic skill. I'm going to watch this MD very closely. I'm glad you came over from .....that other site.

Take care.

&apls  That looks great!  The care you're putting into your buildings is evident and it looks great.

I also like your flower garden in the shape of a "B".  :P  The mosaic/collage presentation is very pleasing as well.

Nice signs! And do you want to make orange or white versions of those Bats? It would look less repetative.

@ calibanX : Thanks a lot even if I don't find myself the half of what you said.  I saw so many great talents here. It gives great humility...  &mmm

@ calibanX : Many thanks ! I did this "B Garden" some time before. I wanted to create a sort of "ABC-book" gardens. As the city name of Belleville start with the B letter, I decided to use it since it was one of the first "ABC-Garden" I did. I wanted to finish this collection and put it on the stex (or Lex if ever I have the honor to upload stuffs on it...). But time is lacking...

@ danielcote : I am happy you found nice these signs. They gave me big trouble while trying to create them. As I wanted to make them individual props instead of putting them on some buildings I had many tries to do before deciding to put them on transparency box. First time I work with Alpha layers on GMax... About other variations on details, yes, I plan to create one or two different walls and roof textures. I even plan to create some props, like chimney top and doors, to put them on the originals models and to randomize them by the alternative prop family method. Not sure to do this now as I am really impatient to go further in the map creation of Belleville. I will surely do such improvements for the release of this set.

PS : I am a big fan of your Monument Valley, Geoff. I think you deserve much more compliments than me ^^

Some thanks :

@ Sciurus : Merci Guillaume. Je n'ai pas encore ouvert tes panneaux électoraux,, ce sera pour la prochaine mise à jour. Merci de les partager...

@ WC_EEND : Thanks a lot ! I hope you feel it even more realistic in this new update !

@ Bobbi : Merci encore Bobbi ! Hélas, je n'apprends pas le chinois. Mais j'aimerai que ma fille l'apprenne car c'est une belle langue, riche de culture et de promesses pour l'avenir.

@ Bluemoose : Thanks a lot Bluemose. I hope to please you more with the future updates. At the moment, this country and these cities are at their very early moments...

Now, the update !

Since I am (almost) happy with my typicals south French Buildings I started to build the small town of Belleville.
The result at this step is quite pleasing enough to show you some views.
hope you would like it even if many works is still necessary to improve all this.
Please, don't pay attention to the many details that are wrong or laking...
And forgive me for my english ^^

Your feedbacks are very welcome !

@Guillaume: I think these walls are JeroniJ's - Seawalls v2 but I am not sure.

Nice update. Now I understand what you once posted (over at ST I think) that in your opinion the ingame trees would fit better that the custom ones - they do fit well in a southern Europe environment presenting the rather small trees there. They would also fit well in a macchia.

What I don't like are these bulps at the beginnings / ends of your bridges and NAM bridges. They are necessary for using the T-onslope pieces but after finishing the bridge works they should be removed IMHO. Try the street-patch-method first, if it doesn't work (happens from time to time) use the mayor mode terrain flattening tool.

Anyway - the atmosphere surely IS french - et ça me fais plaîsir!

Take care

Bernhard

Great job!. Your CJ is absolutely marvelous! What water mod are you using? (it's really dirty)

@ Sciurus : Thanks Guillaume. About your question, yes, Bernhard is true, these walls are JeroniJ's - Seawalls v2

@ Bobbi : Merci en core mon ami, ton soutien me fait toujours plaisir ^^

@ Nardo 69 : Thanks for your very authorized encouragements, my friend ^^ About these bulps you are speaking about  I am not sure of what you meant. I know these bridges are not perfect, but I am not sure of what details you are talking. Could you explain  your thought ?

@ citycapitalizer : Thanks for your nice compliment. About water mod, I am not using anyone. It's only the Maxis Water that takes colors of the Missouri Breaks mod I am using. I find it really interesting to keep a good harmony between ground and trees...

Bonjour Steamrobin

I just came across your CJ and enjoyed looking at your updates very much. You just wrote this:

...and it is a very good aesthetic insight, and you have achieved it in your region. Very good work.  &apls

My only comment is that I would avoid using too many retaining walls around highways and rail lines, and work more to model and slope the land to accommodate them "naturally." In real life, retaining walls are very expensive to build, and engineers will instead use earthen embankments in rural areas to save costs. This would also allow you to landscape the embankments with trees and shrubs along their edges.

...and also, you are right to have a lot of roundabouts for your roads--I never saw as many in my life as I did when I visited this region ;)
