The textures are temporary right now (they are textures from other BATs, which are about what I want for this building).  There's still more modeling to do before I start the real textures.

This will be a 2x2, and there will also be a 2x4 version (it will have a larger base).

That looks awesome dude. It really does. Say, have you considered uploading these to the LEX? That building looks great, reminds me of this one building in Lower Manhattan.

Looks great. Looking forward to seeing more of you have coming up, I'l already enjoyed your BATs.

jason looks real good there and I do like the looks of the building and i cant wait to see you finish it up.....

TopCliff:  Thanks!  No, I don't have plans to upload to the LEX right now.

XiahouDun:  Thanks, I'm glad you've liked them.   :)

Marcszar:
Yeah, it'll probably be called "Nafmis Tower".  That's just a temporary texture.  It's "Perry Station"'s texture, with some arbitrary UVW Map on it.  I'll try to keep an eye on my lines (and my value differences) though.  I tend to exaggerate them too much, and my limestone often ends up looking like terra cotta.

Pat:  Thanks!

Hello Jason. There is a lot to like when I look at your building. I like the window coloring. The details (large panes, small panes) and the dark fascia that defines each floor. I like the limestone looking blocks. A hint was made that it looks too crisp but I kind of like it. But if want to soften it? I sometimes will go into Paint Shop and use the pixel distortion tool to make things a bit fuzzy sometimes. I don't know what your paint program is but I am sure it's there.

I like the details you've put at the top of the parapets and the gargoyles? (near the top and on the sides.) I suppose that the green coloring is temporary. And there will be something in the end that more resembles weathered copper. It is the small things and your attention to detail that differentiates a good bat from a so so ran. Anyway – welcome to SC4D and I wish you luck in your thread here. It is great that you are giving us a sneak peek at what you're doing.

Nice BAT...only one critique and that is the ground floor is a bit too low...it's suffering from the ole BAT squash.

Well Jason, again you're making me having to wipe my keyboard as i've drooled all over it. Though I do not agree with callagrafx that the ground floor's too low - I do hope you'll be releasing some buildings like these with a different color scheme than grey/white with black details. But I could be mental and buildings the size of these are never a different color (?) - keep up the great work!

Sorry guys, I haven't had time to BAT lately (end of the semester crunch).

Squidi:  Thanks!

jmyers2043:  Thanks!  I'm glad you like it.  The limestone texture is temporary.  Later I'll make a new texture for it from scratch in Photoshop.  I guess I'll make a few variations and I'll post them here to see what people like.  Thanks for posting.   :)

callagrafx:  Thanks, the ground floor is actually ok, but all of the other floors are actually too high.  In the game though it doesn't seem to be a problem (it doesn't look out of scale).  I plan on redoing the entrance though, so maybe I'll modify the rest of the ground floor as well.  In the future I'll post the renders photoshoped into SC4.

Howling:  lol, thanks.  I personally like color in buildings a lot, though this building is too gothic for color.  Maybe sometime I'll make a building with a lot of terra cotta or enameled panels.

I'll also post what else I've been up to.

The beginnings of a bus station pack.

A police station.  This screenshot is slightly out of date, but that's basically what it is.  Along with it will be a patrol car lot, which will have extra patrol cars for your city.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg376.imageshack.us%2Fimg376%2F5012%2Fknollprev08hy3.jpg&hash=27b9ef1e0a56e76fdeeae268d8a74937cdcfaf89)

Here is the Knoll Building.  This has been exported, but I will be re-exporting it because there is too much contrast in the facade for the game.

The Police Station and the Knoll Building are both basically done (they're being tested and modded), so there won't be any more changes to those.  They were supposed to be quickies in the first place anyway.

Jason that start of the bus station pack looks good and I cant wait to see more devolpment on it....  The Police station looks as it could be a Downtown one and btw what are the stats on it?  The knoll building looks like it could have come right out of a photo!!!

Other then all that Jason take it easy with the finals dont want you to get burnt out on school lol....

Thanks guys!  Finals have finished and I've moved back home.  I've started a new building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg145.imageshack.us%2Fimg145%2F5246%2Fmodernprev01nn6.jpg&hash=f254333e312462a4c381690ae81f1d87547d709c)

I'm trying to do the glass similar to how SimFox has been doing his.

I don't know what this building will be.  The building itself is about 1.5 x 4 tiles big.  I think the lot will be a 3x4, with a plaza in the front.  It seems kind of small for an office building, so I think a civic function would be best.

Could be a trendy police station, or even an upscale library...

Something about it makes me think some kind of government office building, or maybe a police HQ.

Great BAT Jason, very Mies Van Der Rohe. It reminds me of the Kluczynski Federal Building (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=116838&aid=8) or the IBM Building (http://www.chicagoarchitecture.info/Building/1043/330_North_Wabash.php) in Chicago.

Alittle off topic, but I have a question - Have you ever thought of Making a hospital that would of been build in the 1900 - 1940s era?

Interesting looking little bat. If you're looking to make it a civic building it makes me think of the modern buildings that are often located next to the old city halls that are filled with city staff.

Looking good there Jason and I do agree with Lee that this would look perfect as a library...
Title: Re: Jason's BATs
Post by: Jasoncw on April 26, 2008, 07:24:47 PM
I guess it should be a library then?

Ehanson:  The proportions of the individual windows were originally based off of the IBM building.  I found an elevation photo of it and copied the proportions.  As I worked on it though, I might have changed them.

Baconrocky:  No, I never have.  I've thought about doing some of the buildings in the Detroit Medical Center, but the ones I had looked at were newer than that.

Thanks for the support everyone.   :)

Another new project.  This will be a CS$$$ department store.  A wall to wall 3x2.

Also, I've uploaded the Knoll Building to the STEX.

Hello J

I am glad to see you around here and showing so excellent creations

That last project is really elegant. I would suggest you to use real floors and transparent glasses for the bottom floors. It would make it look more real, and would allow inside illumination. You could use a texture for the grounds to simulate the furniture and details. This is of course a suggestion. The overall shape is very good so far  ;)

Thanks jeronij!  Yeah, a modeled interior might be best for such huge windows.  I'll try out your suggestion.   :)

Jason,

I love your BATs, they definitely convoy the feeling of the urban United States during the 20th century.

Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see how you diversify our downtowns next.

Jason -

Title: Re: Jason's BATs

BigSlark:  Thanks!

Marcszar:  But that's two more weeks you have to finish your projects!  lol  My original intention with the building was to make it taller, but the windows weren't looking very good, and I was having trouble finding good proportions for it.  The renders started taking longer too.

Fantnet:  I sent the police station to someone to test, so whenever that is done it will be ready to upload as long as it's working correctly.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg142.imageshack.us%2Fimg142%2F1180%2Fmodernprev03tj0.jpg&hash=de66fa75452a5f7c282169c5d566e22ddadfe7db)

I spent a good chunk of yesterday doing the nitelites.  I don't have much of a preview of them, because I'm not going back and changing them, lol.  They look good though.

I've started lotting, and I've come to two options, #1 and #2.  What do you guys think of them?

After it's decided which one to work from, I'll do some finishing touches and it will be ready for the STEX.

I love the LOT a lot!
Clean, realistically spacious! I guess I should as you to make LOTs from my buildings  ;)

I think 1 looks slightly better...

Building is great too. Game need such clean uncluttered structures.
Nightlighing is good. Only thing that I would notice is still clearly visible shadows fromt he lights at ground floor. Of course this would depend on lighting used there, but in most cases it would be very defused one so it wouldn't produce ANY noticeable shadows from object of cross section like those frames. But I know folk LOVE shadows - as a sign of light, I guess.
Generally I don'¨t think that interior lighting would light the exterior quite so much to do so it would have to be unbearably bright inside... Decreasing it would also help blending into LOT better...

I always like your models, but they're generally a little too American looking for my tastes.  This library, however, will sit very comfortably in a European style city and so has gone straight into my plugins folder.

You know, Jason, that library is cosmetically identical to the main police station located in Sydney. :P

I'll see if I can hunt down a picture.

The police station takes up the wider section below the tower.

Its Coming Along really Nice. I think U should Put some kind of old pianted faded add one side of the building. it would give it even more of that vintage look.
Title: Re: Jason's BATs
Post by: Jasoncw on May 22, 2008, 07:24:09 PM
Bigskelding:  Thanks!  I'm going to pump this one out, so that I can go back to my other projects, so I'm probably not going to do anything fancy.  Making the ad texture wouldn't take very long, but finding an era appropriate ad that could realistically be used as a painted advertisement, that is clean enough to make into a texture take more time.  Plus I don't know that a high end retailer would want ads on the side of itself.

Marcszar:  Thanks, that's interesting that you've found those styles in this, since it is supposed to be just normal 1930s art deco.  Originally it was inspired by the LaSalle Bank Building (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=lasallenationalbank-chicago-il-usa) from Chicago.  Then when I decided to make it a department store, I started basing parts of it off of Bloomingdale's Department Store (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Bloomingdale's%20Department%20Store&w=all) In New York City.  This isn't the same or a recreation of either of those, but that's what I was looking at.  The limestone won't have flashing or a cornice.  From my understanding either limestone doesn't need flashing, or there is some kind of internal seal somewhere, because I've seen a lot of limestone facades with no flashing.

I'll work more on this building right now.  There might be an update later tonight.

Edit:  I've worked more on the building.  The bulk of it is done, the rest is just tweaking and adding details (loading bay, roof junk, etc.).  Though like I said before, I want to finish this up really quick so that I can go back to my other projects.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F9550%2Fdepartmentstoreprev03cc2.jpg&hash=e8e2010298d980868d3e00b61ca7975154e18282)

Hey Jason - Nifty building. Nice clean lines. Very contemporary.

You spoke of detail (loading dock) I really do like it when people pay attention to all angles. Good textures will lift a so so building from OK to nice. Details then lift it from nice to exceptional. And your buildings are always top quality. I also like to place loading docks at the rear of my buildings too. So Sim movers can get desks in or out. I've also been known to put large-ish vents in the rear or maybe a double door between two vents. This can simulate a room at the rear that has chillers other mechanical equipment. I see from the side view that you have a straight line of windows simulating an emergency stairwell. I do that as well and also include emergency exit at the bottom of the stairs.

Jmyers2043:  Thank you for the kind words.  Yeah, loading docks are in my arsenal of random stuff to put in the back of the building, lol.  I don't think the floor plans of most of my BATs justify the number and frequency of loading docks I put on things, but they look good.  I don't think it's even possible for trucks to back into any of them from the alleys.  Vents are something I've forgotten about, and I wasn't sure of what to put in that space there, so thanks for mentioning them.  I need to think of more things to put on my roofs and alleys because they're starting to look the same.

BigHead99:  Thanks!

Bigskelding:  Thanks!  Yeah, it'll be on the STEX.  I don't know when, but eventually it will make it's way there.

BigSlark:  Thanks!

I've done more work on the roof and alley.

Only critique I would come up is that may be it is slightly too purple (I mean in the sunny side) and the glass is a bit too bright.

Still it is a marvel!

QuoteI need to think of more things to put on my roofs

I use less roof junk now than I used to. SimCity to some extent is a roof top game. Even so ... this can be over played. I've gotten better at Paint Shop Pro as I've gone along. I tend to concentrate on good roof textures over roof junk now. Your use of the roof penthouse where the elevator equipment is maintained is a good example of how a roof can be interesting without a lot of clutter.

Ideas? A roof can have small equipment shelters for communications equipment (microwave, satellite dishes) You can then connect that shelter with conduit pipe to your elevator maintenance room. How about a water tower? A stand pipe would be the gravity feed for all the restrooms. How about a security camera or two or one of those traffic cameras looking down at an intersection? You can also make a low lying square box on the roof. This is where air escapes from and is drawn in when the elevators move up and down. . . Hmmm - I'll keep thinking.

Ah - I like to put little roof drains and space them every 4 or 5 meters. A 1X1X1 cube with a metal material. If done right they will not pop out and distract the eye but will cast shadows and add interest to the roof decking.

But my goal now is .. Less is more . . if you can make a good roof texture.

Very nice building Jason!  I like the angled loading docks.  They're a nice touch and are more realistic in tight spaces.

This is turning out quite well Jason. If you wanted to call it quits on the roof I think it looks fine. There is a good amount of clutter and the texture is great so I wouldn't worry too much. Oh and I like the angled loading docks :)
Title: Re: Jason's BATs
Post by: callagrafx on May 26, 2008, 01:09:06 AM
I too like the loading docks...only critique would be that there are too many of them.  Normally there's one or two loading bays with the rest being storage and garbage, like a waste compactor and recycling bins.

Vester:  Thanks!

SimFox:  Thanks!  I experimented with the brick a lot to make it look good in the game, though yeah, I think it might be a bit too purple.  I'll take a closer look at the glass next time I work on it.

jmyers2043:  I definitely agree that roof junk is (or at least was in the past) overdone.  I'm generally happy with how my roofs turn out, but I use the same technique on all of them so I feel like sitting next to each other, they might look too the same.  Or maybe the consistency would be a good thing.

Jestarr:  Thanks, and thanks for posting!

spa:  Thanks   :)

callagrafx:  Yeah, there's definitely too many of them, lol.  This store has an emphasis on looking busy.  Employees can often be found shuffling boxes in and out of the various bays.   :)

I've starting working more on 211 West Fort Street, which is a building in Detroit.  Originally, in the summer of 2006 I started the building, thinking that it would be a quicky because of its simplicity.  Then I found that the white color, the thinness of some of the parts, and and night lighting made it too hard to do in Gmax, and that it would be better done in 3ds Max.  A bit later I finally got 3ds Max, and continued work on it.  Since then, every few months I work on it but usually end up fixing or redoing things from the past, or have stopped working on it, waiting to learn a new technique for it (night libraries for the windows was the most recent stall).  Anyway, I've worked on it some more, and have worked on the glass and the roof.

Here is some stuff about the real building:

Local Live (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=r1ncqz82cc2r&style=o&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=5649384&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1)  Here you can see 211 West Fort Street.  You can also see the Detroit Free Press Building (bottom of the frame), Chase Tower (top of the frame), and the Olde Building (left edge of the frame, directly above the parking garage), which I've already released.

Hey Jason. Thank you for the wonderful bat's. I am wondering if you take requests, and if you do here are a few that would be nice to see on STEX. Thanks.

The building in this picture in the middle would be nice.

wow great work jason,
i just downloaded ur police station and i love this bat.
the department store is also something i cant wait to see it in game.
someone said here your bats are all looking so american, but that is exactly what i like on them. here in europe we only have boring modern glassfront highrise buildings(most of them)
and these older art deco style is somthing i like much more.
this 211 building is also exelent and i like the roof construction but the older looking bats are the real trademark of ur work in my opinion.
i also hope to see some progress on the nafmis tower .
thanks for your great bats and i also enjoi to see your previews here
