New update 16th of July -------------
We will follow the small European Nation of Andau form 60 BC until the year 2000.
------------
Hello everyone here at SC4D.
Let me just tell you a few things about myself. I am a Norwegian, and have been living in the Netherlands for the last 16 years. I am trained as an architect and a chef, currently working as a restaurant manager in a small catering company. This September I will be turning 40, but like anyone at that age still thinking I am not a day older than 30-ish something.
Simcity is combining a few of my interests like architecture, city planning and development and history. It is a game that seems to have almost limitless possibilities, and we all adapt the game to our own ideas.

This will be the start of a project that I have been wanting to do for quite some time. It will be a Mayors Diary of a small European country. We will be following this country from around 50 BC to present day, which means a little more than 2000 years of development. It is quite a daunting task, but one that I will be enjoying and I hope some of you as well.
The area that we will be looking at is roughly 90x90 km made out of something like a 100 Simcity regions. Lets just say that the project has been growing over the years, that is at least in my mind, now it is just getting this idea translated into Simcity.

Here is a map of Western Europe with the country marked in red.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FWesternEurope_1.jpg&hash=492ae60a35938e595ef46a37c10e072526b744f2)

It borders on Holland in the west, Germany in the north and east and Belgium in the south. But this situation and these borders are for now something in the very distant future.
When we start out just before the Romans enter this part of Western Europe, this area with its mixed population of Celtic and Germanic tribes has no clear political entities.
None of the aforementioned countries exist and there are no clear boundaries except for the geographical ones like rivers and mountains.

Looks promising.
Are you going to start this CJ from the year 0, and work on till 2000? Or did I get that wrong?

Anyway, I hope to see some pictures very soon!  ;)

Cheers!

This looks fascinating!

Considering the amount of work you've already put into Andau, this promises to be a classic MD. I can't wait to watch the development! :)

Thanks everyone for your comments and for dropping by just lurking. I will have to start with apologizing for the long break. My work got very busy, and I just did not have the time to continue. Hopefully I will be a little more organized with more regular updates for the future.

Citycapitalizer, well wait no more, the first picture is here.

Fabian, thanks a lot. I really hope you will not be disappointed.

Glowbal, you got that right, I am even starting at 60 BC and will finish eventually in the year 2000. I have chosen 60 BC because that is the beginning of recorded history for this part of the world

Jason that is going a bit fast, time is of course always a problem with these kind of things. I will try to keep the updates going a little bit more at a steady pace this time.

WC_EEND, thanks for stopping by here, and I hope I can keep you interested.

Bernhard, thanks, and I will enjoy having you visit in my MD for a change.

CabraBuitre, hello and it has been a long time since Istrina. I hope I will see you visit hier more and that you will find something interesting in this MD.

djvandrake, thanks a lot for stopping by.

Tomas Neto, hope you like what is coming up.

metarvo, thanks and I hope I will see more of your comments here.

Update 2
Beginning a new MD after the game has been around for such a long time, and so many excellent people have made their contribution to it, is quite scary. I am not at all an expert at anything related to Simcity. I have done a few things with gmax, the lot editor and Ilive reader, but have always had the guidance and help of people who understand these things a lot better than I do. The BSC has been invaluable in this, and as so many times before I would like to mention Barby with her endless patience with my efforts in anything related with modding. She has quite a few bat's dedicated to her name and this is not without reason.

Almost everything for this MD will be custom made, Maxis did not make a city simulator that would develop a city with any kind of historical accuracy,.....unfortunately.
So far I have been able to make a lot of the buildings that I will be using for let's say the first 1000 years of development, but still there are so many things that needs to be done.
If any of you reading this have an interest in European history and like the idea, please let me know. Maybe it is possible to work together to speed up the process, to share content or even to work on developing this MD or parallel MD's.

Now let's get back to the content of this MD.
The time is now 60 BC, in three years time Julius Caesar will come to this area with his Roman armies, but for the moment we have several loosely defined tribes all a mix of Celtic and Germanic people. There are no real towns to talk about, with the small exception of Hira and Boster. Both of these villages are former cult sites and towns of the Celt's who used to be the dominant group in these lands. Slowly though other tribes have come to settle here, in the beginning there was certainly conflict, but by this date that happened already several hundred years ago.
The Celt's actually had a higher level of organization and the towns were larger in those days, now the two sites remaining have less than 500 inhabitants.

First lets have a look at the map again, this time we are zooming in on the actual area that will feature in this MD. The main part is between the major Rivers the Rhine and the Meuse. There is also an area north of the Rhine along the Ems and the lower reaches of the river the Lippe. And before there are any comments of the accuracy of this map. This is fictional, this area does not look quite like this in real life.
In the south there are three rivers the Es, the Leine and the Selter. They are all running roughly from south to north starting somewhere in the Ardennes.
There are no real mountains within this map, the hilly ranges also running south to north are all the start of the Ardennes and the Eiffel heights reaching something like 700 meters further south in Belgium and Germany. The St Juris which is the heighest point within this area is just below 500 meters. To the north the hills get lower and north of the Rhine there are no hills higher than 200 meters. The Rhine which for most of its course through Germany is running from the south to the north is turning here to the west, entering the large river delta in present day Netherlands. This delta is made up of not only the Rhine but also the Meuse and the Scheldt.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FAndau%2520maps%2FA-C_plattegrond-update-2.jpg&hash=c97c795596f48d727bf4e6ef6db23a26f30d93d0)

Hira is the main village of the Andicans. Its roots go back to the Celtic period when it was the centre for a larger area controlled by the people living here. There is a trade route crossing the Rhine just north of Hira, going to Boster further north in the Ems valley.

For this update I will only show you an overview of the small village of Hira which is overlooked by a hill fortress. The town used to be on the hill in the Celtic period, but these days there is only a shrine dedicated to the Goddess Hira with roots back in history and there are some warehouse buildings. The fortress is only ever used when the village is under threat. Then everyone will be seeking refuge within its walls together with all their live-stock and other belongings they manage to drag with them up the hill.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25202%2FHiraoverviewupdate2.jpg&hash=6b337de4e9b95439bb6b9294d650f1cf438c06d4)

In the next update we will take a closer look at both the village and the fortress. There are still some small things I need to make in the BAT before it is all ready.

Adroman, thanks a lot, well I enjoy reading history and this is kind of making your own version of what happend.

Tomas Neto, that is too kind of you. :)

Debussyman, well at least widely anticipated by me, nice of you to stop by here. And I will of course make good use of your bat's in later stages.

WC_EEND, almost only close up's in this update.

Bobbi, thanks for your comment.

Fabian, I am of course going for the fantastic in the future ;D. Abandoning Andau, no, not at all, it just slipped through my fingers while I was busy with RL.

Battlecat, Hello nice to see you here. I have been looking through Adara quite a few times by now, and you have really inspired me to do something more with the rural areas.  :thumbsup:There are just so many great ideas to see in your MD. Still this is a lot of trial and error, and with the 60BC to 2000 AD I can go back and change as I develop this further.

Graesloel, hello and thanks for your comment

Djvandra, hilltop fortress in close-up at your command.

Earthquake, thanks a lot for your comment, hope to see you more often here.

Warconstruct, nice of you to leave a comment.

Hello Bernhard, aah Roman roads, yes I have not quite decided yet how to do those. As far as I have understood, in these parts of the Empire not of the same quality as further south. But it would mean making another set of textures for roads, and it is something I am not terribly good at  &mmm. So far I have been using jeronij and cp textures. Maybe there is something within the SAM that can be used?
The idea of the refuge is from Germany although I do know them from Scandinavia as well.

Update 3
We are going to take a closer look at Hira just a few years before the Romans start making their presence known in this area. Caesar with his armies is still busy further south in Gaul, but even in a time with very little communication and travel outside the village, the Andicans know something is happening. There have been a Roman reconnaissance all the way to the area of the Batavi where the Rhine split into three branches and the delta of the Netherlands begins. Rumours of the Romans and their dealings with the natives of Gaul has spread from the Batavi to the different tribes further east and north.

We start out in the centre of Hira with the route running from south to north along the Selter river, which is also the main street of Hira. The village is not actually on the riverbank but is set back a little with the fields extending almost to the waters edge.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHiraoverviewupdate03.jpg&hash=78080bd490afe49cd7171e965e699e386579f965)

This is zooming in on the CBD of Hira with the local fish monger doing good business with fish caught in the river. Scenes from Asterix come to mind with complaints about the quality and fish flying.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHiraCBD01.jpg&hash=8eeefe6692e693f69d47b62fc8cbe9a0c2ef8154)

Houses from the edge of the village. The low houses are dug into the ground and have only the roofs above street level. You could just imagine how it would be cleaning out the water and mud after some heavy rain. But the construction of these houses is very simple.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirasuburb01.jpg&hash=10d830b7cbc27915200c5b6d91b524e05d9155f1)

This is a bigger house with a workshop in the backyard and as you can see everyone is growing their own veggies close to home.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirasuburb02.jpg&hash=6ecd98daf9d4d1f5c4bcf7a9f6a9c75efa66c1ee)

This is a larger farm that I am quite happy with how it turned out. The stable is probably pushing historical accuracy a little too far. But an artist should be allowed some liberties.
This is the only farm not situated in the village itself. Most farmers live in the village and walk from there to work on their fields. Farming in this period is small scale and is mainly (only) to feed the own family.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirafarm01.jpg&hash=92c3a24aebaf83e64a0692e723d35e99b2387634)

Few villages in this period would be of such a permanent nature as is suggested here in Hira. Because fertilizers and crop rotation was not known, villages would have to move after a certain time when the yield would drop. There was also so much free space, finding a new space for your home and fields was not a problem. Villages where lost in a sea of forest.

The main reason for people to settle in Hira to start with was the hilly plateau overlooking the river and the river plain to the west. This is quite an unique feature for this area and this spot is probably the first to be fortified by the Celt's in Andau.
This is an overview of the fortress with the village in the background below the hill.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirafortressoverview01.jpg&hash=d0a9713e4adbd20b9975acad7a18be948ed1f859)

The walls facing the plateau are earth ramparts with a ditch in front and a wooden palisade on top. The palisade runs all the way around the hill with a few towers and a gate. This is the main- and only entrance to the fortress.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FFortressgate01.jpg&hash=6273f0fd0e165f0ab49b6c0e670a3cfe1f89cfe9)

Within the palisade are warehouses for grain and hay and there is a large paddock for the live-stock in case the village comes under threat. As you can see they are busy at the moment to prepare for what might come.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirafortresswarehouses01.jpg&hash=960f40f657773d49394914b1ef6f1751173ecc3c)

This is the Hira temple with an altar outside and a holy spring. She is a River Goddess and protector of all life, at least if she is kept in good spirit with offerings.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHirafortresstemple01.jpg&hash=bd7126a4d73994f65c969bb6703d0969c21d3ec2)

This last picture is of the small river harbour just outside the village. The river is the easiest way to travel. There are no real roads outside the villages only paths through the often dense forest.
I had quite some difficulty to make this harbour, never done any harbour lots before. The whole thing kept sinking under water. For now it is just a non-functional lot, but when things get a little busier in Andau I will change that.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25203%2FHiraharbour01.jpg&hash=ccf862d9d28c8bde64c7c71165f359e86d24f103)

Hope you enjoyed this little tour of Hira 60 BC. We will certainly come back here later in this MD.

I like your MD so far, it seems like a massive project  ;) Are you bat'ing all those houses yourself?

If you would like to have more variety, maybe Manchous french village houses would fit in with you theme: French village (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2245)

That little village with the fortress is looking fantastic and I can not wait to see what you've got for us next time.
I really enjoy looking at each picture for quite some time and I suppose that you batted a few/(or all??) buildings for that Update.

Superb update!  Everything looks excellent!  You've got a great diversity of custom materials and you've put them to great use!

One thing that particularly stands out for me is the size of your farms, since you're currently simulating a medieval town, the individual plots would be about the size that one family could manage without any mechanized equipment!

Replies teaser update 4

Turtle. It is a massive project, but one that I do enjoy. So far all the buildings you have seen, I batted myself. Manchou's French village houses are good, they are not quite right yet for the period, but I will certainly make use of them later.

Joelyboy911, thanks a lot. The fortifications are really simple bats, but I think they serve their purpose well.

Driftmaster07, well I changed the pictures, thanks a lot for pointing it out to me. I had completly overlooked the fact that the grid was on.

Kimcar, the walls and houses are all batted by me. Later I will be able to use buildings by other batter's as well. There is just not that much to choose from for this period of history.

Petjuh, well we are just before the Roman conquest, Medieval times that will take a lot longer.

Bobbi, thanks for stopping by.

Earthquake, thanks for your comment, and I am glad you like the village

Fabian, thank you. The buildings are all made by myself, but they are really not very complicated to make. For now there is just a small teaser, hopefully next weekend I will be able to finish the next update.

Strucka, you are certainly correct about taking a long time. But I am not really in a hurry.

Battlecat, thanks a lot. How good of you to notice the size of the farms, indeed the idea is not to make any large farms. As you already said, the farms are run by one family and there are no mechanized equipment around. Also the economy is not developed enough for farmers to sell of any off their extra produce. They will only grow what they need to eat themselves.

Tomas Neto, thanks.

CalibanX, the walls are quite simple, at least batting them, getting the earth ramps the way I wanted them was a bit more difficult....I was plagued by jagged edges.

Djvandrake, thanks for your comment, and no problem with the closeup, it was on my list to be included in the update.

For now I will just give you all a small teaser for the next update.

The Romans are on their way north. Here they are just passing through the first village of the Tungeri. The villagers of Vernia which this place is called, just got their fright of a lifetime seeing the massive and well organized legions marching through.

Still not a real update, but another teaser, the Romans (and me) are are working hard to give you something more to look at. At least the Caesar's forward troops have managed to put up the first building in their new camp. They have started clearing the rest of the area as well.

Barbarossa – Glad you liked the teaser. Romans are up to no good of course, at least that is what the  Andicans would tell you

Earthquake – Well the Roman army is something quite new in this part of the world. I think the locals would be rather impressed by them.

Battlecat – Lots more to come when it concerns the army.

Fabian – Actually I have used a model by Simgoober and changed the clothing and added the shields and spears. Thanks for stopping by.

Thomas Neto - Thanks a lot.

Joelyboy911 – There have been quite a few historic MD's, but I don't think anybody has taken it quite as far as this. I can imagine because it is so much work. There are just not that many bats that can be used. You need to make a lot of the models yourself.

Calibanx – Thanks, it is the first Roman army I have seen in Simcity, but there might be one that I don't know about.

Djvandrake – Yes, indeed legions. For now they have just dug in awaiting their orders from  Julius himself.

Metasmurf – Takk for det.

Knapp – Unfortunately for the Andicans, I don't think they have any power drinks.

Battlecat – Again thanks for stopping by, and now there is an update.

Earthquake – Well, I hope you will enjoy this update.

Albus of Garaway – He,he. What would we all be without them?

Djvandrake – Chariot? It is actually just a simple wooden wagon, but I might make something more chariot-like.

Barbarossa – The camp is finally finished. I had to make  few more things than I had planned. But that is how it always seems to work. Actually making the models are not that time consuming, they are really quite simple both in modelling and texturing. It is making the lots and testing them in game that is ruining my time schedule. I do hope you like it though.

Thomas Neto – Thanks again.

Robin – I am of course very pleased with the OSITM for December. Thanks for the honour.

Bobbi – Thanks for your comment.

Schulmanator – The soldiers are of my making, the horses are props from Ripptides excellent packs.

Geoff – For now they are doing what the Romans do best, building and preparing.

Joelyboy911 -  Thanks for taking the time to comment, it is much appreciated.

Thingfish – Hi, and nice to see you here. The competition has rather strict rules and this village would not stand a chance passing, also I have seen a few of the entries already. They are really very good so I will keep my pride intact and stick with the MD for now. But I do appreciate the compliment.

Adroman – That is a great compliment for Andau. More historic scenes to come of course, and I hope you will enjoy those as well.

Jim – What a nice surprise to see you here. Pillage and burn....oh but we have just started.

Thomas Neto – Thank you, you are a very loyal visitor.

Update 4
It is 58 BC and Julius Caesar has been marching north with is armies. Some of his generals has met quite some resistance from the tribes further south in the valley of the Meuse. The Tungeri (also on the Meuse) however are settling for an alliance with the Romans. Caesar gives the order to set up a camp in their area before they advance to the northern parts of the Rhine, this also gives the ships waiting at the mouth of the river time to prepare for the invasion. Julius Caesar himself is going north along the Rhine and will set up camp on the west bank of the river. They will wait in these positions during winter.
But the Romans are not the only ones preparing for battle. The Usipetes and the Tencteri from north of the Rhine have just invaded the area of the Andicans and taken the fortress at Hira. They have more or less forced the Andicans to join them in resisting the advancing forces.

Here is a map with an overview of the situation at this time.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FMap58BC.jpg&hash=5ea7814eb97f88103a66accf9a7246533d582886)

Now before we continue with the Roman invasion we will take a look at the Roman camp at Estuarium. This is a marching camp, meaning it is only to be used temporarily. Still the basic principle of how it is set up is no different to any other camp or city for that matter. The Romans are very consistent with their planning and their camps and cities are often recognizable from all over the empire.

First an overview of the camp. This one houses one legion, that is 5600 men. The first cohort of 800 and ten more each with 480 infantry. There are two main streets ending at the four gates.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FCastraEstuariumoverview3.jpg&hash=846efcfb574d11b97891fa681b697fb2129f50b2)

Here is the Porta Praetoria seen from outside the fortress.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FEntranceCastraEstuarium3.jpg&hash=c246c6e2b08742556e44ae4f18163385d5a5293d)

At the crossing of the two main streets is the Principia where the standards of the legion is kept.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FPrincipiaEstuarium1.jpg&hash=38739978e2759781489cbf937365c7ab19c99a13)

In front of the Principia is the Parade Ground
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FTraininggroundEstuarium1.jpg&hash=1bd2b0643cbb79b8fed41ba9794fd6de869e892b)

Each cohort is made up of 6 Centuriae of 80 men and 6 Centurions (their officers). Normally the Centuriae would live together in one barrack, but for now they live in 10 tents for the ordinary soldiers and 4 tents for the officers.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FCenturiaeEstuarium1.jpg&hash=ff68d1400e362cd58c5c4d68c05e539abe743b8e)

One of the most important aspects of the Roman warfare is the ability to supply their armies. An hungry army will not fight very well. Therefore the only other buildings that have been set up in this camp are the granaries and behind these a few workshops for the necessary repairs.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25204%2FGranariesEstuarium1.jpg&hash=bb244a61837f6dfd45318158a50ab605b18b2ce5)

At a later stage we will go a into more detail of the Roman Castra. In the next update we will see how the situation around Hira will develop.

great work there, look forward to more. It's really nice to have some dramatic development, adds a lot to an MD. I love the texture on those red/brown roofs in your last shot.

I just can't get enough of that, being a fan of the European history. The Roman camp is very well organized, so I think the indigenes will get serious problems if they try to defnd themselves. Unfortunately, even the best willing governement is sometimes involved in a war. It could be so simple, if men would show more will to live in peace...

But I admire your skills at the BAT. This is very awesome. (I know, I repeat, but I can't stop saying it  ;) )

Bobbi -  Thanks for your comment

Schulmanator – I am glad you like the ancient look, has been a lot of work to get it this far.

Kimcar – Thanks a lot.

Fabian – Oh, yes I will keep going for quite some time still, thanks for stopping by.

Earthquake – I am quite pleased with my Roman camp as well, but of course there is always room for improvements.

Tomas Neto – Thanks for visiting Andau.

Thingfishs – Well, the new update has just been posted. And no problem with your comment earlier, I think we both have the same idea even without or with a wink. Hope to see your winery released soon.

Jason – Yes, you could say the Romans are bringing nothing but trouble to the people of this region. Hira – they are preparing as best they can.

Djvandrake – Julius Caesar is of course the most prominent Roman we know today. Even after 2000 years his name are known by most people in the Western world. And his story is quite fascinating, so no wonder.

Battlecat – Thanks for your comment. So far all buildings and a lot of the props are of my own making. The flora and fauna are by other makers, as you might recognize I am using a lot cp's stuff, both props and textures.

Stijn – That is good to hear, hope you will enjoy the Roman advances.

Bernhard – Yes, I do know I am crazy in pursuing this project, but as long as I have fun doing it, it really does not matter. Still a few updates before the Romans are truly settled in this area.

JB – Thanks for stopping by and I hope I will see you here more often.

Geoff – Of course the Romans will pillage and plunder, the Batavians are the first to notice this behaviour by the their new occupation force.

Dragonsbay – I really think it is a pity you have not continued on your MD, it did start out very well. If there is anything you need just let me know.

Knapp – Well, then we both have a keen interest in European history. As you can see in this update, the natives do not stand much of a chance against such an well organized enemy. Wars have been a big part of human history, conflict seems to be a more constant than anything else.

Swesim – Thanks a lot for stopping by, I hope you will enjoy the MD as it continues through the centuries.
Og du skriver bedre norsk enn det jeg kan. :D

Update 5 The conquest of the Batavian Homelands

In the late spring of 57 BC, the Roman armies are on the march again. Unfortunately for the Batavians the ships sailing up the Rhine is the first part of the force arriving in Andica. The ships have been split up and each village are confronted with landings of Roman troops. The main settlement at Dornick is completely overrun by the Roman soldiers, although the Batavians are courageous in defending their homeland, the results are the same everywhere along the river; any Batavian resistance is crushed without mercy.

After the landing at Dornick the Romans are burning and pillaging their way through the village.

Hvordan fikk du soldatene til å sitte oppå hestene, er det egne props?
Ellers veldig intressant å se hvordan Romerne tar seg fem gjennom byene.
Vi sees i neste update!

How did you get those soldiers up on the horsebacks, is it your own props?
It was interesting to see how those Romans made their way through those poor villages.
See you in the next update!

Can't wait until the next update...  :)

Yesss!! Those Batavians had it coming. How dare they stand in the way of enlightened Roman progress. Now those ugly dirt roads will be beautifully paved in stone. Worth the price paid I say.

Carry on.

Schulmanator – Indeed they are moving fast now

Bobbi – Thanks for your comment

Swesim – The soldiers are props, and I simply put them together with the horses from Ripptide prop packs in the LotEditor. Raising them a bit and you get the illusion of Romans riding horses.

Debussyman – The Batavians were a bit unlucky and unprepared, they did not know the Romans would be sailing up the river on boats. They were expecting an attack from the south.

Battlecat – Best advice at the moment would be: If you can't beat them, join them. :D

Tomas Neto – Thanks a lot, I am glad you like it.

Geoff – The Batavians were just in the wrong spot at the wrong time, and they will survive this. It looks worse than it actually is, only the villages along the river where hit this bad. The inland areas are not that affected by the attack (yet)  $%#Ninj2

Kimcar – thanks, the effects were not that difficult to do, nice of you to leave a comment.

Teaser update 6
It has been a busy time at work, and little time for Simcity, but I have managed to do some smaller things for the next update. So far there have been only Roman soldiers, but as we are preparing for the battle of Hira we need some barbarians too.
And here they are moving towards the Romans who are passing over the Elsenborner ridge as we speak.

Update 6

The last line of defence before Legion Alaudae IV enters the plains to the west of Hira is the Elsenborner ridge. Here the Usipetes have decided to meet the Romans in open battle.
The outcome is already given, this strategy is doomed to fail for the barbarians. On the open battlefield the Romans are far superior to anything the barbarians can come up with.

An overview over the battlefield at Elsenborner ridge.

This is the last update before the new year. I have changed my plans, and will be going away for a weeks holiday. Next update will be in 2010. For me it just remains to wish you all the best for the new year, and I hope to see you all then. I will bring a laptop, and spend the evenings preparing for the rebuilding by the Romans of Andica. Quite a few new buildings needs to be made before I can truly begin the Roman era.

Awesome update, I love how you set up the battlefield with such detail, reminds me of the game Rome: Total War.
Just a little question: how did the Usipetes played right before the Romans crossed the Sor? seems like they had a pretty big defence line there...

Kimcar – thanks for visiting here again. Epic?, well I have always enjoyed games that take some time, this will not be an exception.

Debussyman – This battle took place on that defensive line (the Elsenborner ridge), the Legion Alaudae had not crossed the Sor yet. First after this battle were they able to advance further in the direction of the Andicans and the Wentals.
My trip was very relaxing, we had quite cold weather and some snow. We even managed to visit one of the architectural icons of the Carolingian area the monastery at Corvey. Looked very different to what I did expect, they built a baroque palace around the church which I never saw on any of the pictures.

Alj – well I have seen many references to the game Rome: Total War, I must say I don't know the game myself, so I can't really tell.

Fabian – Not done as much as I would have liked to, but I am glad you still took time to visit.

Battlecat – This will be the last update with battle scenes for some time, now I can start rebuilding which I do enjoy a lot more.

Tomas Neto – The final battle for now, the Romans are now in control of the all land to the south and west of the Rhine, and Caesar will soon have other business to take care of.

Geoff – this round is clearly a 1-0 to the Romans, but we all know what will happen later, don't we?

Bobbi – thanks for commenting.

Swesim – Noe jeg også ser fram til.

NomenEstOmen – Nice to see a new face, and thanks for making a comment. There is a lot to tell, and it gives me time to develop more of the country along the way.

Bat – Another new face here, but clearly not on this site. Thanks for stopping by.

Djvandrake – All my pleasure, hope to see you again here in Andau.

Octoberfest – Nice of you to stop by and welcome to Andau. I hope you will enjoy this update.

Sumwonyuno – Thanks for commenting.

Update 7 The defeat of the Andicans

In the summer of 57 BC the Roman armies converge on the area of the Andicans with the fortress of Hira at the centre. Caesar is marching along the river Rhine and approaching Hira from the east, at the same time the Legion Alaudae that came over the Elsenborner ridge have crossed the plains. One part is taking the area of the Wentals another part is nearing Hira from the west. Again the outcome is not difficult to predict. The Romans have an overwhelming advantage both in numbers and strategy. The ships have now landed their troops at Hira, there is a small battle at the harbour site, but soon they can march into the village burning and pillaging along the way. The village is mostly deserted as its inhabitants have fled into the surrounding forests.

The ships landing at Hira

The Romans burning Hira

Combined forces from the three different tribes are holding the fortress, but also here the Romans are crushing any opposition. The fighting is fierce, and the Andicans are able to hold the main gate. But soon the armies of Caesar have breached the walls at two different points and as they fight their way into the fortress the buildings inside are burnt to the ground. The last building put to the torch is the Temple of Hira.

The Usipetes and Tencteri are repelled and driven to the north of the Rhine. The villages along the Rhine are all abandoned or destroyed by now, leaving an empty strip of land as a border between the Romans and the tribes to the north. Julius Caesar takes over the fortress at Hira and he orders his troops to lay down a new city beneath the hill. The Andicans that are now starting to return to the area, are forced to settle here in the new Roman town of Castra Hiranium.

Kimcar – The boat I found on a Russian site, I really only rendered it in gmax. I hope to be able to make something better if time permits.

Bat – thanks and welcome to Andau

Sumwonyuno – I think Hira could do with a some change, thanks for commenting.

Djvandrake – great, I am glad you enjoyed this update. Actually burning down the town and taking some snapshots at the same time was not as easy as I first had thought.

Io_bg – thanks, it has taken quite some time to get everything this far. Now only some 2000 years of batting to go. :D

Knapp – the boats are quite detailed but in close zoom, unfortunately they don't look that great. Hira will take some more time to plan and build, first up is now Estuarium. Not a true Roman city but a little less barbarian than the first villages we have seen.

Battlecat – thanks a lot, I am not really a warmonger, but no history without war, or so it seems.

Tomas Neto – wow, what a compliment, thanks a lot for stopping by.

Mightygoose – thanks and welcome to Andau, or Andica as it is called during this period.

JanYpe – thanks for commenting and welcome to my slowly developing MD.

Kabuto23 – Great to see you here, and hopefully you will be able to go with the flow of development although not always historical accurate. But I will do my best to follow the main events as they happened in this part of Europe.
I was born in Norway, but after living In the Netherlands for the last 17 years I think am becoming almost more Dutch than Norwegian.

Kelis – thanks for your comment

Schulmanator – thanks for stopping by, and I hope you will enjoy the next update.

Dave – thanks for commenting and I will see if I can satisfy all your needs in later updates. ;D

Update 8 The Tungeri Capitol – Estuarium
While the battle around Hira has just finished we will take a look at how the Tungeri are doing after joining the Roman Empire
As federati the Tungeri are allowed to make use of the old marching camp at Estuarium. The troops dismantel the walls and ditches before they leave. The Tungeri are allies, but the bond is too new for the Romans to take any chances and leave behind an intact fortress which easily can be used against them.
The Principia and the parade ground is now the Forum at Estuarium and the streets follow the pattern that the Romans laid down for their camp.

The camp and the surrounding area after the Romans have left.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25208%2FEstuariumoverview57BC.jpg&hash=e9f2e617ad7af46a0c84310bcd17e5009bd0ac8b)

10 years later and Estuarium has been growing, there is still a lot of space within the old fortress.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25208%2FEstuariumoverview47BC.jpg&hash=b979debb07a9dc31a06f389952cdbd6c99a574e5)

The Principia is now the Forum and the enclosed space is used as a market.

Hey Gjermund

I like the scene with the well. The villager's homes have small garden plots. I saw some sheep and cows too. All the villagers have slacks and white shirts when going to the market ... that gave me a good chuckle.  :D

You'll have to create a scene where some local villagers are fishing and/or hunting for deer or llamas. Perhaps some sort of trap where the men beat the bushes to heard or chase wildlife into some sort of pen or corral.

I enjoy the diary every time I stop by.

Best Regards - Jim

This is excellent Gjermund. I love the scale of your massed Roman forces. I have to say that when I saw the police car parked outside the market I immediately thought of the end of Monty Python's Holy Grail when the police show up and arrest all involved

I love it Gjermund!

Replies and a small teaser

Battlecat - thanks again for commenting. The docks are of course made from the set by Pegasus with a slightly different approach

Connor -  Hi and welcome to Andau. I can imagine this MD not being everyone's cup of tea, but still I hope I will see you here more often.

Jim - After working on the different lots, I only think; "I need some people around'. And indeed these are the well dressed Sims to be found at the market some 2000 years ago. I actually don't see it myself any more, but it is very good of you to mention this fact. I will try to make a little more period sims. And I had a good chuckle reading your comment.

Geoff - Thanks for visiting and I know the scene very well that you are referring to, and I must say it was not at all intentional..... . By now I have changed the image and removed the Monty Python's reference. Next time I will see if I can lot something spawning white rabbits......

Tomas Neto - thanks for commenting and I am glad I can keep you entertained.

Fredrik - thanks for stopping by and commenting.

As I do believe in not posting without showing you something new, I have added a small teaser.
This will be the new Hira temple. The building is not truly Roman in its design, but these temples were quite common in both Gaul and Brittany during this period. Often built in places where there already was an existing cult to a local deity before the Romans moved in.

As RL has caught up with me again, for the time being no real update. But I have not been just sitting around even in the field of Simcity. So here is another teaser from the rebuilding of Castra Hiranium. The Romans need to make a statement as the new rulers of Andica. With that in mind they have started the construction of a Legate's House within the walls of the old castle. This will function as a military administrative centre for the region along the lower Rhine.

Mightygoose: No, there is no doubt about this one it is a shrine :)

Connor: Thanks for your very kind words, I enjoy this myself and it is a nice added bonus if the ones visiting find it worth the time to look and comment.

Tomas Neto: Thanks for your comment.

Djvandrake: I am glad to hear that.

Warconstruct: Thanks a lot

Battlecat: Simple, but should do its job well enough.

MattyFo: That is right, this is not a very fast project, and 20th century is still some 2000 years to go. :D

Thingfish: I think the history part is probably just for the kind of history nerds like myself. And for the accurate recreation... I think no one can really tell as there are very few photos from this period. ;D

Schulmanator: Thanks for dropping by, and next chapter is finally ready, all for your viewing pleasure.

Schulmanator: Maybe not of the highest quality but I think it is passable for what I intend to use it for.

Kimcar: Thanks for commenting

Djvandrake: Thanks, it is now placed within the fort and dominating the skyline of Hiranium

Swesim: At times they were all for making statements, thanks for visiting.

Warconstruct: Thanks, and imposing is the idea behind the building indeed.

Fabian93: Thanks for commenting

Bat: Thanks a lot for stopping by

Battlecat: RL can indeed sometimes be a pain, but at least I am mostly off weekends.

Tomas Neto: Finally there is a real update to look at.

M.M.Malwin: Thanks for visiting Andau, and I certainly hope to see more of you here.
You are of course the one who is creating truly beautiful updates for now I just settle for original. :)

Ethan: Thanks for making such a nice comment, and yes the idea is to continue until the year 2000. I do not know how long it will take....but will try to find out.

Update 9
Before we turn to the reconstruction of Hiranium, I will give a short summary of the rest of the Roman campaign in Gaul.
The next step in the campaign is the crossing of the Rhine. There is a wooden bridge constructed and the Roman Legions are invading the homelands of the Tencteri. This is more of a punishment raid than actual conquest. The Tencteri are never really engaged in battle, they simply retreat further to the north, and the Roman advances are cut short by the onset of winter.
After this expedition and the defeat of the different tribes in Andica everything seems under control, but in the winter of 54/53 BC there is a setback. The Euborones under their King Ambiorix are able to exterminate a Roman Legion. They are lured out of their camp with the promise of a safe passage out of the area but march into a trap set up by the Euborones and their allies.
This provokes a violent reaction from Julius Caesar. The Eburones and their allies the Menapians are hunted down and annihilated. The Tungeri take active part in this campaign and are allowed to expand their influence in this area afterwords.
The next year 52 BC sees the biggest threat to Roman rule in Gaul during the time of Julius Caesar or actually until the 2nd century AD. This takes place in central Gaul and the uprising is lead by Vercingetorix, chief of the Arverni tribe. The rebels use a scorched earth tactic, not engaging in open battle with the Roman legions. The end of the rebellion comes with the surrender of Alesia. The Gallic forces are trapped in this hill fort and the relief force is not able to break through the lines of the Roman siege.
Gaul is now split into different provinces ruled by Roman governors. Andica becomes part of Gallia Belgica with the present day Rheims as its capitol.

In Andica there are now 4 civitas each a centre of a tribal area. The towns of the Andicans, the Batavi and the Wentals all have a small contingent of Roman troops, the main part of the occupation forces are stationed in the larger towns in Gallia Belgica.
The Tungeri are exempt from having Roman Legions within their lands because of the help they have provided during the conquest and consolidation of Belgica.

Castra Hiranium
Hira has got a new name and a new city plan. The grid is much preferred by the Romans when founding new cities, and Castra Hiranium is no exception. There are two double wide main streets the Cardo and the Decamanus. Where these two streets meet is the heart of the city; the forum. The diagonal street is the old main road going to the crossing over the Rhine further north and has been kept by the Roman city planners.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25209%2FHiraromancityplanning30.jpg&hash=981c5e039f7cc0d4027183d0922cbabc391b7651)

There is a whole block reserved for the development of the forum, but as Hiranium is still a rather modest town just parts of the area has been put to use. There are also three more blocks reserved for other functions. There will be a new temple precinct, a bath and a theatre. These will all be built at a later time when the city is able to support this kind of facilities.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%25209%2FOverviewCastraHiranium40BC.jpg&hash=41080a852bdb09fe31dbddbed371a160f3bb3a26)

The area where the Romans have been spending most of their effort is the old hill fortress.
New walls have been erected and the main gate is a double classical arch, not so much for defence as a symbol of the Roman rule. The Legats House is of course the most dominant structure within the fort. This building overlooks the newly founded town and can be seen from everywhere in Hiranium
Due to the construction of the Legats House the Hira temple has been relocated to a different place, still within the fort though. The Romans have great respect for local deities and have sponsored the erection of the new temple complex. Next to it is a round temple dedicated to Diana goddess of the hunt and the forest.
The remaining structures are barracks an an armoury used by the troops stationed in the fort.

The town itself is has been growing steadily since its founding in 51 BC. It has now around 1500 inhabitants living within the gridded area. Most of the people living here are still barbarians according to the Romans, but the first veterans have also settled here and slowly Hiranium will be more of a Roman town.

Geoff – Thanks for such a nice comment. The history lesson is not entirely correct as all things concerning Andau is fiction or alternative history if you like. I am glad you liked the custom buildings that I made for Hiranium. I am especially happy with how the round Diana temple turned out, I might even consider putting that one on the LEX.

DebussyMan – Hi, and thanks for your comment, it is much appreciated. Slow and patient is the only way I can do this. There are just too many things that has to be made before each update. This might change when I get closer to our own time as there are much more bats to choose from.

Battlecat – thanks for commenting and I am glad you liked the new buildings.

Kimcar – thanks for stopping by.

Mattyfo – thanks a lot, also for waiting.

Mightygoose – no, these are not meant for release. You can send me a PM if there is anything special that you are interested in. And just out of curiosity, what does XD stand for?

Soulchaser – yes, it is a lot of work, but I enjoy it.

Nedalezz – The Forum will be 8x8 tiles and might later grow even further. I have not quite decided yet. I think the development of Hiranium may not go quite the way that I and the Romans first intended.

Connor – thanks for commenting.

Will – thanks and you are the first one who actually likes the textures for the roads. I have to admit they are not that well done. But again they are only for use during a certain period of the MD.

Djvandrake – Thanks for your enthusiastic comment. Making an authentic settlement will always be a question about interpretation, like I have said before there are no photo's  $%Grinno$% or detailed paintings from this period that can show us exactly how such a village looked.

Bobbi – thanks for commenting

Kelis – thanks for stopping by

Schulmanator – thanks for your very nice comment.

Tomas Neto – thanks for stopping by and I am glad you enjoyed this update.

Giel – heel erg bedankt. Thanks a lot and there is indeed a lot of history involved.

Update 10 - Batavium 40 BC
We are now going back to the banks of the Rhine, an area that was hit hard by the Roman conquest. The Batavians who used to live on both sides of the river have been forced to settle on the south bank or to move further north outside the sphere of Roman influence. Along the north bank is a strip of land that is kept free of settlements by the Roman forces. The small Castellum in Batavium is the northern guard post of this frontier of the Empire. Only a small force has been left here. This force is not meant to stop any invasion from the barbarians to the north, but are supposed to hold their position until the reinforcements arrive from the larger garrisons in Gallia Belgica.
On the map from the last update this place is called Oppidum Batavium which is not entirely correct as this name is given to a settlement where the inhabitants have Roman citizenship. This will happen a little later in the history of Batavium, for now it is just a Vicus, which is a smaller village often growing in connection with a military camp.
Batavium is a smaller than Hiranium, but have more Roman veterans who have chosen to settle here.

First the overview of Batavium with the Castellum and the civilian settlement.

Outside the fortress is the vicus which actually pre-dates the fortress.

The houses of Roman veterans are built of stone and they use roof tiles, this in contrast to the housing of the native population which are all made of wood.

Just to the west of Batavium close to the small hamlet of Dornick there is a sanctuary to a local genius called Salius. This sanctuary also pre-dates the Roman conquest, but Roman engineers from the Castellum has rebuilt it in a more Classical tradition.
The Temple of Salius is surrounded by dense woodland and sits right on top of a spring which surfaces here.

The temple is simple structure within a partly colonnaded precinct.

Great job on your monumental project.  The way you BATs work together to form realistic towns and settlements is what truly sets this MD from everyone else's.

Your Sanctuary of Salius is to die for.

Io_big - Thanks a lot for your comment, I am glad you like the bat's that I have done.

Kimcar - Thanks for stopping by

Matt - Thanks, the Castellum; I must admit I am quite pleased with how it turned out. The ranch are actually just some stables for the small cavalry detachment stationed here.

Djvandrake - What a great compliment. Not only interpretation but also adjusting this to the possibilities within the game and of course of much time I actually have to make the different lot's and bat's.

Arthur - Thanks for leaving a comment. I am glad you liked the Castellum.

Grizzlybuilder - Nice to hear that you think this is looking realistic. And just let me know if there is anything you could use the sanctuary for.

Mightygoose - Thanks.

Will - I am sorry that things are not going very fast, but nice to hear that you still like what you see.

Debussyman - Thanks for your very kind words. About your question: In short a Castellum is a fort for a smaller military unit, the Castra is a fortress for a complete legion. For Hiranium I have used the Castra not because of the size of the military unit stationed in the fortress but rather because of the Legats house which functions as a head quarter for the whole region.

Vester - Thanks, you of course know how long I have been working on this.

I_love_lamp - you think so? :D

RickD - Thanks, and yes it is a lot of work, but that is the same with any kind of MD.

Battlecat - Thanks for your nice compliment, not easy to take a game from California 2000 AD to Germania 40BC  :D

Yan77 - I am glad you liked the update.

FrankU - Thanks for your great comment, and I have no idea how far I will get or long it will take me. There are more MD's that have been running for years, so I think it is not impossible.

Bernhard - Well, you know quite a lot of what is involved in getting one update ready. Thanks for stopping by.

Teaser update 11

This has again been a very busy period, and there has not been much time to make anything for Andau. There will be no real update yet. I am working on some new things to show you. Today I have a small teaser referring to Bernhards question about the Villa Rustica. Purely by coincidence this is one of the things I have been working on.

The Villa Rustica is a residence in the countryside. In most cases it would be a working farm, though the owners of the Villa would not work the land themselves. Sometimes it was just a place to live outside the city.
In Roman times if you wanted to climb the social ladder you would need to take part of life in the city. This was the place where decisions where made, the place to gather following and to make yourself and your family known to the world. The wealth though was to be found in the rural areas. Families could own vast estates in different parts of the Empire.

Hello Kwakelaar,

First, congratulations for your amazing work ! It looks very realistic !

I'm actually working on a similar CJ, could you tell me where you found your street mod without public lights ?
If you're interested, all the medieval bats I've created are available in the download area at TSC official site, maybe it can help you when you'll be at the Middle Age...

And finally, did you provide to share your Roman lots ?

Thanks,

R.

This is just a post to keep this MD from ending up in the wrong thread (inactive MD's).
RL has not become more quiet, but rather more busy than ever. I have had a promotion at work, and currently working almost two jobs at the same time, as I have not been able to find a replacement for my previous position.
I think my next real update will be out in late august, as I have a holiday around that time.

Replies:

Citymax - thanks for your comment.

CSGdesign - it is one of Pegasus very early textures. My idea is that it is very jong grain crop.

Arthur - thanks a lot.

Tomas Neto - thanks for commenting

Sumwonyuno - trying my best

Battlecat - thanks for stopping by

Roulback -Thanks for a very nice comment. There are quite a few similar MD's that have been/are trying to simulate historical development. If you are doing this yourself, you know that it is quite difficult to have enough bats to fill a whole city.
The street light mod is something Swamper made for me a long time ago, and I have already put in on this site somewhere. I will see if I can provide you with a link.http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10620.msg320344#msg320344 (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10620.msg320344#msg320344) You can find the mod from Swamper here
At the moment I am actually not planning on releasing any of this stuff, as the quality is not quite up to BSC standards. I might if I am allowed just put everything into prop packs and anyone wanting to use it, can have at least the bats to play with.
You can send me a PM with what you would like to have and we can see if we can find a solution.

Sorry folks, that there is nothing interesting to see here at the moment.

Update 11
A small new update, hopefully the beginning of a new series of updates which should see the time line extended until 14 AD.

Short summary of the main events
After the conquest of Gaul Julius Caesar supported by his troops went back to Rome and got the upper hand in the civil war which ended in 45 BC. By now Caesar was ruler of the Roman Republic and he made his adopted grandnephew Gaius Octavius heir to everything including his name.
Octavius managed to take control of the Empire after fighting his opponents in the new civil wars that broke out after the assassination of Caesar. These wars lasted until 30 BC with the defeat of Marc Anthony and Cleopatra. In the following period until his death in 14 AD Octavius better know as Caesar Augustus became the founder of the Roman Empire and de facto ruler.

Further Roman expansion in Germania
The Romans did not see the Rhine as a distinct political border between Rome and the barbarian tribes to the east. Until the disastrous battle of the Teutoburger forest governors and military commanders in Gaul attempted to bring Germania under Roman rule.
In 39/38 BC, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was governor of Gaul, he fought a war on the east bank of the Rhine on behalf of the Ubians and the Bromians against the Suebians, a Germanic tribe that was notorious for its aggressiveness.
In 30/29 Nonius Gallus repelled an invasion supported by the Trevians, a Gallic tribe living within the borders of the Empire. Four years later the Legat Vinicius led a punishment expedition into the areas of the Usipetes after the murder of Roman traders in this area. Internally the Usipetes were divided, one faction seems to have been pro-Roman, another pro-Suebian. The pro-Roman group was expelled and were allowed by Gallus to settle in the area of the Batavi accepting the name of the local tribe.
In 20/19 Agrippa led another campaign against the Suebians. During this second term as governor of Gaul, Agrippa resettled the Bromians on the south bank of the Rhine. They were under constant threat by the expanding Suebi.

This map shows the military- and civilian settlements and the roads finished by 18 BC.

Update 12
We will now have a look at the newly founded castellum Agrippa and the vicus Ara Bromia.
This is the main town of the Bromians situated on an island in the Rhine. Agrippa decided to resettle the Bromians after his last campaign against the Suebians. This was a policy connected also to the wish of Romans of keeping the northern and eastern embankments of the Rhine as a no-go zone. The idea of course being that this would create and extra boundary between the lands controlled by the Romans and those areas still under barbarian rule.
The area around Bromia is rather marshy and prone to flooding. The Roman engineers started constructing dikes to protect the lower lying areas. Bromia soon became a kind of boom town because of its location where two smaller rivers converge with the Rhine.
The HQ of Agrippa being built here also meant that the Legats at Hiranium were becoming almost irrelevant

An overview of Bromia.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252012%2FOverviewAraBromia18BC.jpg&hash=a512fa52e665d79e68cf3c94eec92b7e26526712)

Agrippa's private headquarters facing the Rhine.

Under the command of Agrippa this camp has got a slightly different layout than the normal castellums of the Romans. Here Agrippa wanted a Praetorium facing the river and the Principia has been constructed on the other side of the parade square. In between the two buildings there is a small commemorative arch remembering the successful resettling of the Bromians at this place.

The small military harbour, used mostly to supply the troops during campaigns to the other side of the river. The castellum has four granaries that are storing grain shipped here from Gallia Belgica.

Debussyman - Actually Lutetia has not been on my mind when constructing Bromia, but I can see why you would think so. The main inspiration for this town is Colonia Agrippina and Argentorate. I think when we get further into its development you might recognize some of the features of these cities.

Kelis - Not medieval yet, still some centuries to go before we reach that period. :) And again thanks for the chariot and horse model.

Will - Thanks for commenting

Paladin - No stress here, this is purely for fun, thanks for your enthusiastic response.

Battlecat - Thanks, always a pleasure to see you here.

Tomas Neto - Thanks for stopping by.

Kodlovag - Indeed that is what I am aiming for at the moment. Nice of you to stop by.

Sumwonyuno - Nice to see you back here at SC4D, and thanks for commenting.

Update 13
This is an overview of the region of Ara Bromia the centre of Bromian settlements. The area is dominated by the Rhine and the estuaries of the Leine and the Enne rivers. The south bank of the Rhine is low country prone to periodic flooding and the Romans have started constructing dikes. The villages along the rivers are all on higher ground or on these new dikes protecting them and their inhabitants when the level of water starts rising.
Despite the problems of high water the town of Bromia is in the perfect spot to become a centre of trade and travel.

Actually Lutetia has not been on my mind when constructing Bromia, but I can see why you would think so. The main inspiration for this town is Colonia Agrippina and Argentorate. I think when we get further into its development you might recognize some of the features of these cities.

That's great to know  ;)
I initially tought Lutetia because of the island location and the city layout with the temple and religious grounds on the east and the goverment/military on the west or the island...

Great region shot, eagerly waiting for new updates

This MD has created a niche of its own, and no MD, on this site or otherwise, can top it in terms of historical ones.

Great Job :)

Teaser update 14
We are taking a small look at the start of the Roman marine base at Portus Fons Seltus, this new port is just north of Castra Hiranium.
There has already been constructed a small temporary camp and the legionnaires have begun work on clearing the area that will be used as a military shipyard.

Overview of the area
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252014%2FPortusFonsSeltusoverview1.jpg&hash=89cd442a3f006bd134adf5293785020f1d754609)

The forest along the riverbank is being cut down

The first reinforcements are arriving, this flotilla will use the port that is being built here as their base.

In the next update we will see the completed port, shipyard and the new civilian settlement.
And I will of course take time to answer all of you personally.

Heelo Gjermund!

Love both updates on the page - the region view with the unregulated rivers as well as the beginning of the Roman port. Incredible what you did with the game to reach the point where you are now!  &apls

BTW Hope you don't mind but in Mainz, the home town of my mum, they found some Roman ships during excavation works appr. 25 years ago and erected a museum for them. Most probably you heard from them, if not, I have three links for you in case you are interested: ;)

I hadn't visited Andau for a while (In fact, I've been absent from SC4 related things for several months now), and so I decided to pay a visit. I went back and read the diary in its entirety and...wow! I am extremely impressed.

First of all, although I am extremely interested in history, I wouldn't consider myself an expert in the slightest. I'm probably not even a very good history trivia buff. Yet, the way you present the events in this diary makes me absolutely convinced that I'm reading some sort of illustrated textbook. I honestly don't know how accurate your information is (Although I trust that it is fairly so), but the way you present it is very convincing, and more importantly, exciting.

Secondly, the visual quality of the diary is simply masterful. Everything from the muddy dirt roads, to the marvelous temples, to the serene forests, and the intense battle scenes is just spot on. Attention to detail is marvelous. I can't say enough good things about this diary. I'm seriously looking forward to your next entry!

Berhard - Thanks for the links, and indeed I have found this museum already searching the net for pictures of Roman ships.

Marsh - Thanks for posting

Andreas - Nice of you to stop by, and I guess the sky's the limit.... at lest that is what I heard. :)

Arthur - Thanks for commenting and for once we are in the same category (congratulations to you as well)

Djvandrake - Thanks a lot

Thomas Neto - The most regular poster here, thanks to you as well.

Jason - Wow, that is very nice of you to make such a positive and inspiring comment. I have read a lot of history just because I find it interesting. Some things are taken from the texts that I have read, but as this is a place that does not really exist in the real world some parts are fiction or interpretation of things I have come across in history books.
You would think that history is about truth or what actually happened, but if you start reading more books on the same topic you will discover that the turn of events at a certain time and place can be open to interpretation.

Battlecat - Thanks a lot

RickD - Nice to see you here

Joan - Thanks a lot for the honour.

Ethan - Thanks

Will - first a small teaser, but update is on its way

Terring7 - You might not be, but I am certain :D

Marsh - Thanks again

Update 14
The marine yard at Portus Fons Seltus has been finished and the long Rhine border is patrolled by ships built and maintained at the workshops here. The vicus that has sprung up next to the shipyards are mainly populated with Andicans who has come from the south of Andica. There are also some Roman veterans who have made their home here on the Fons peninsula.

First an overview of the yards and the vicus.

This is the main building and there are currently three ships under construction.

This is the main- and only gate into the complex which is surrounded by a broad moat the is connected to the river as well as wooden walls and towers.

The Romans have constructed an artificial island that has been connected with the rest of the complex with a wooden pier.

These ships have recently been finished and are soon to start their task as transports and patrolling.

The vicus also has a small harbour which is used by the fishermen and to ferry any civilians wanting to cross the Seltus on their way to Castra Hiranium

Update 15
Castellum Carvo is another of the new military camps that has been constructed along the Rhine. This is an area that has been settled by the expelled Usipetes now forming a part of the Batavian tribe.
The Castellum is mostly used by cavalry troops and close by there are large stables for breeding and training horses.
There is has even been an attempt at building a large racetrack or as the Roman calls it a Circus or Hippodrome.

An overview of the area with the Castellum as well as the stables and the racetrack.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252015%2FOverviewCastellumandBarkastables1.jpg&hash=44383402eb3157286db66811131d93e77945e1c4)

This area has quickly become rather popular for Roman veterans to settle, and the vicus in front of the Castellum are mainly populated by veterans with Roman citizenship.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252015%2FMosaicCastellumCarvo2.jpg&hash=a07a12ec3be1f9e7b72f69b86a7ba3688267eb68)

The reason to settle here is the export of horses to the troops all through the province of Gallia Belgica which has turned out to become a quite lucrative business.

This is another attraction to the Romans who all seems to be fond of any kind of public spectacle.

At the moment they are only training, but still even this is attracting some spectators.

Your attention to historical detail has it's own unique quality!  The Hippodrome is a superb example of that detail, and you've done a fantastic job making a realistic version of one!

Well, you cannot say you wouldn't be completely crazy - I don#t want to know how many weeks you stayed in the BAT for the last updates ...  $%Grinno$%

But they are amazing. I'd like to know by curiosity if you got any letters / maisl from well-known museums along the Rhine if they could use your pics and models ...

Take care my friend!

Sebes: Thanks again, hope you like the newest update from the Tungeri capitol

Sumwonyuno: Thanks for stopping by, and nice to see you here also. You have been absent for quite some time, but I enjoy seeing your updates again.

Battlecat: Realistic and with some adaptations to simcity. I have read quite some stories about the hippodrome in Constantinople, and always found it fascinating what took place there.

Jason: My Romans in period dress are all copies with alterations from bats made by Simgoober. Thanks for you nice comment.

Eufl: Unfortunately I have never learned any Latin, and I am mighty impressed by those who can. Interest in history we have in common, and I am glad you like this MD. Thanks a lot for your comment.

Terring7: Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Tomas Neto: Thanks for commenting.

Bernhard: Crazy? Me not crazy $%Grinno$%. And alas there have been no one wanting to pay me for what I am doing here :D

Matthijs: Yes, lot of time spent trying to make new buildings for each update. And thanks for your comment.

Orange_o: That is a surprise to see you visit here, thanks for your comment and I hope to see you again here.

Dantes: Thanks for your very kind comment, it is a great compliment to get.

Debussyman: No I have not said anything about the language spoken here. The tribes in this area are Germanic in origin and thus they speak Germanic languages. Though with time more and more people will start using Latin the tongue of the ruling people the Romans.

Tomas Neto: Thanks again.

Sumwonyuno: Thanks for your comment

Schulmanator: Thanks for stopping by.

Update 16 Estuarium

As you may have seen in the teaser we are going back to Estuarium, the capitol of the Tungeri. The small town has been growing steadily since our last visit, and at this moment year 5 BC there are some 3000 people living here. Both along the Meuse and the Es rivers new villages have been founded and especially the Es valley have some large imperial estates. The estates have been essential to the development of Estuarium as the two large new public buildings have been sponsored by the family who are in charge of these lands.

Lets start with a small recap of the development of Estuarium
Here is the area just after the construction of the Roman camp in 57 BC
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FEstuariumoverview57BC.jpg&hash=a3c52734b0c393014ef756f3b590167f54cc2ae9)

The town after the Tungeri moved in and it was made the capitol for this local tribe in 47 BC
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FEstuariumoverview47BC.jpg&hash=5e8d7b16d3f19e1c5372ad518b2d461713887e11)

And this is the current overview of Estuarium 5 BC. By this time there are quite a few buildings made of stone, but still most houses are being built in wood. The old wooden basilica is still there at the hart of the town, but the old parade grounds have been built over with a large market building, and business is going well.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FEstuariumoverview5BC1.jpg&hash=1f12d4e0aa14c91259acbb83ffbd5b33cbfcde02)

This is the pride of the town, the new public baths and the Forum Praetoria, named so for the connection with the military leader who has paid for the buildings here. He also built a town residence for himself and his family which can be seen behind the market hall.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FForumPraetoria5BC.jpg&hash=95019752799920671c1e0ea2394019842a175095)

The Public baths as seen in the teaser but from a different direction.

This is a snapshot taken from the Via Cardo, the main street leading to the bridge over the Es river.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FEstuariumViaCardo5BC.jpg&hash=84fa18f20cac3d8ef8d1c8e9c5198ac148a2fa78)

One of the larger employers in Estuarium, the Sollius bronze works.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FSolliusbronzeworks5BC.jpg&hash=aac823daf4c104c1d74321b7e9447023aa5cd21b)

A detail from one of the more popular suburbs with quite a few veterans and some more wealthy Tungeri who have taken over the style of building in stone rather than wood.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252016%2FEstuariumMeusesuburb5BC.jpg&hash=67fa374c87ab451e484411a0a35f191297b8734a)

Update 17

Today we are going upriver from Estuarium to one of the Imperial Estates created after the pacification of this area by Julius Caesar. After his extermination of the tribes of the Eburones and their allies the Menapians large areas along the Es river were kept for the Imperial family. This lands have now passed over to the ruling Emperor Octavius.
The Praetorian Rivus is developing and running these estates, a reward he has received after a long and successful military career.
Rivus has built himself a large villa at Asarum. The village is depending on the villa and its owners as all land here is part of the estate.

Excellent work once again. ;)
Reading your MD always reminds me of a teacher I had in fourth grade. He was obsessed with roman history. He took us to all the places in the area where once a roman road or a villa rustica had been. Unfortunately a few piles of rubble was all there was to see.  %wrd But he passed a bit of his interest on to me nevertheless. ;)

I recognize Trolca's dirt streets there, but it also looks like you have a custom SAM set in use as well.  It must be functional; I don't think you plopped all of those farms and houses.  I really like the way your farms are fenced off.  I feel like this clearly defines the property lines.  The history is a nice touch, too.  Good work, Gjermund!

Tomas Neto: Thank you

Scirius: You are right about the home made mod, these are textures from Cyccledog that I have adapted to use as streets.

Ernst: I have just started. We still have some 2000 years to go :D

RickD: I am probably obsessed indeed, not only by Roman history, but by history in general. I have a bit pity on you though having to go through looking at piles of rubble in your childhood.  :D Still he managed to get you interested so he must have done something right. :)

Bat: Thanks a lot

Noahclem: Thanks for stopping by and only smell of manure in the streets of Andau for now :D

Metarvo:Indeed those are Trolca's dirtroads supplemented with some of my own. The streets are from cyccledog also adapted to use instead of the normal maxis streets. All residentials/commercials/industrials are growing as in the normal game. Thanks for noticing the fencing it takes such a long time to do detailing like that, I always only do some parts. ;)

Schulmanator: Thanks for visiting

Kergelen: Thanks a lot, I can always share if you are interested.

Sumwonyuno: The farms are mostly made with invisible buildings and I use the same crops to cover up the area where there normally would be a barn. All farms are growing by themselves.

Kelis: Thanks a lot for commenting.

Nedalezz: Thanks for your very kind comment.

Update 18

We have now moved forward to 10 AD, the famous battle of Teutoburger forest took place in 9 AD.
In this battle three Roman legions led by the senator Publius Quinctilius Varus were defeated by the tribes living to the east of the Rhine. This has been a serious set-back for the Romans and all military and civil settlements on the east bank have been abandoned.
The strip of land along the Rhine are now organized into three military "provinces". The lower Rhine has its main headquarters at Ara Bromia and the commander Tiberius has three full legions to his disposal in this area. These legions have very recently been brought here to replace the ones that were lost during the battle of Teutoburger forest.

Legion V Alaudae is stationed at Castra Vetera, a military camp that was built by Drusus (adopted son of Augustus) in 11 BC.  Drusus died already in 9 BC after falling off his horse during a campaign on the east side of the Rhine.
This Castra will be the staging point for new campaigns to the east lead this time by Tiberius.

First is the overview of the camp, its river port and vicus.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252018%2FCastraVeteralargeoverview1.jpg&hash=61d05ec4db28b4cb71df49154b3332cd494b3348)

Here we have an overview of the camp itself with the different buildings like they were called by the Romans. In its layout and buildings this camp is typical in the way the Romans planned their military installations. I have done a little interpretation of the different maps and plans I have seen of forts from this period, but it is fairly accurate.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv145%2Fkwakelaar%2FUpdate%252018%2FCastraVeteraoverviewwithnames1.jpg&hash=d1f06ad8507317df638f699b4a247c75629fd34b)
Centuriae – the barracks to house the infantry and centurions
Principia – administrative-, assembly and religious building containing the standards of the legion
Praetorium – home of the command officer and his family
Tribuni/Tribunus/ Praefectus/Centurion – homes of the higher officers and their families
Horrea – granaries
Valetudinarium – hospital
Fabricae – workshops
Refectorium – refectory and bakery
Armamentaria – armoury

This is the principia at Castra Vetera. It is a basilica type building with a courtyard and the legions standards are kept in the sacellum here. This room is on the main axis of the building, facing not just the entrance to the principia but also the main entrance to the fort.

Replies:

Framly - Thanks a lot

Schulmanator - From what I have seen of your MD so far, I think you do a great job with it.

Bat - Thanks for stopping by

Noahclem - Thanks for such a nice comment.

Sumwonyuno - Yes indeed, it is one of the largest in the region.

Ernst - Oh, but I would think you probably are doing very well in your history classes.

Tomas Neto - Thanks for commenting

976 - Thanks a lot

Supremec - That is very kind of you. This MD has almost turned into a half research project as I have turned into reading a lot more of Roman history to try and understand a little more of the period.

Update 19
Just to give an idea of what you have seen so far, I have made an overview with all the regions of Andau. There are 13 regions that are finished (grey scales drawn, rendered and all city tiles have been opened, forests and smaller rivers/creeks have been put in place).
Most of these have also been populated with farms, villages and towns.
I think there are still some 100 regions to go before all of them have been done.
In the overview below you see the regions that are finished covered with a black mesh.

Next update should be in the beginning of September, after I return from my holidays. In a week time I will pack up and go back for 3 weeks to Norway for a much needed time off from work which has been quite a challenge the last year.
I hope you all have a wonderful time this summer and can enjoy whatever you will be doing.

Hello again,
still impressing work, and sometimes i think simcity is made for something like this rectangular roman planning. Maybe You didn´t learn Latin in school, but i lost the most knowledge in all the years since then...
But what You do is some stuff we should show in schools, to remind to a people they were not less modern then we are. It´s the work of a real historian! If i see these thermae i wish to get some time machine and have a chance to look back in these ancient civilisation - only for a little bath in the caldarium  ;D.
Hope Your holidays were fine and i will stay waiting for the next update,
greets, carl

I am sorry for keeping you waiting, you will just need to wait a little longer. RL is just too busy at the moment, I have had no time to work on the new update.
Thanks for your great comments.

Don't worry Gjermund, real life is more important than a game.., and of course we all have patience so we can wait as long as it takes! ;) I really enjoy your MD, so no matter how many times it takes to update, if it's updated I'm happy. :P

I have to say, this is a truly impressive project, Gjermund! The amount of detail you've put into everything in Andau is nothing short of breathtaking.

Your custom road/street set, along with the T21s you've implemented for it, are especially fantastic, and they've really got my interest. I'm about to start a historical SC4 project of my own, and with only a minor change (deleting the timber sidewalks), your mod would be perfect for it. If you're willing to share it, I'd be eternally grateful.

I look forward to seeing more of Andau (when RL permits you, of course)!
