Title: Kaysland
Post by: City Planner on August 29, 2013, 09:17:30 AM
Hi, this is my first CJ and I have been getting a lot of inspiration from different authors on this site and I felt it wouldn't hurt to share what I have been creating.

I am going to walk you through a region that I am developing called Kaysland.   The first town that we will visit that is a WIP is called Sanderson.  As of now, Sanderson is a small town with appx. 250 residents.  The main attraction of this town is the lighthouse. There is also a beach that attracts surfers and tourists.

Here is a few pics around town....

This is Sanderson beach..

The beach has a picnic area..

Church is in session

Welcome to the MD world!

Really nice start of your MD there. Lovely pictures.
The little beach near the lighthouse is well done. I also quite like the city crossing.

Just a little shame the streets are empty of cars.

Welcome to MD section. Nice work on the beach.

I see you have not synchronized all the seasonal flora ( or you have planted both evergreen and seasonal versions of the same tree) so I suggest you plant all the seasonal trees in 1 of September following the instructions of the icon's description ;)

Thank you for your comments everyone, it is deeply appreciated..

Yes Kerlegen, I noticed that.  I think I will a go with your suggestion and make the flora uniform.  I am gonna go with evergreen for now in this side of the region.  As I go out further, I will start to place seasonal...

New Update....

We are still in the small town of Anderson..  We are going take a look at a mid wealth neighborhood in development and the city intersection that is slowly but surely developing.  I made some changes to the intersection.  The McDonalds that I had there didn't fit so I changed it to a new one that came out a few days ago.

Here are a few day time Pics

I should say that in California here we often have Live Oaks (evergreen) (in clumps) that have occasional Black Oaks (deciduous) stuck in the middle of them, which creates a rather comical (though entirely real) picture (in the fall, that is--they look nigh identical the rest of the time from a distance). The reverse happens as well (green in the midst of seasonal), though not as often. Just saying that sometimes the contrast isn't unrealistic, especially depending on the region.

Also, the new pics are nice, though I'd try to ease up on the super close-up (Zoom 6) shots unless you have HD props or BATs to display, since the pixelation detracts more than it adds. Same thing goes for the photoshop effects; too much is distracting, though I did appreciate the effect in some of the shots.

I also happen to prefer Darknite to MAXISnite, but I'm not knocking you for that one. Is personal preference is all; just wondered if you were aware of it; plenty of great CJs use Maxis Nite to their advantage, so the jury's out on that.

Nice pics, dont really mind it at all with the number of zoom 6 pics you have, cause they look pretty well managed to me, though like rooker, Dark nite stands out better over Maxis nite. I suggest that you give it try, but it is only a suggestion ;)

Thank you for your comments everyone.  I am glad everyone likes the new post.

As far as nightlighting goes...I just ran some tests on SC4 and Darknite is already installed;  I did notice while running tests that the effect on the pic made it look a little like maxis nite.  I placed this lighting effect on the pictures because I thought it was kinda hard to see everything at night.  I am going to try some different things out in the posts to come.

Photoshopping... this is my first time ever using effects in pictures and I was testing a few things out.  As more posts come, they will get better.  The level 6 zooms I thought was good to show the detail and work that went into the lots.  I think I will not do as much but I will still post some.

New post coming soon...

Hi guys,

Thank you everyone for your kind comments,
Here is an a quick teaser/update to show the motel that was built.  I also built an Eckerds pharmacy in the same plaza.  As of now if you stay at the motel you can eat at the Mcdonalds, or eat across the street at Red Lobster (This is a beach town).  This the main intersection in this town of 400 citizens.

@Gugu3 - Thank you
@Noahclem - Thanks
@ Alafel-  Thank you, I appreciate it. Yes,all the parking lots are redone so they fit seamlessly into whatever plaza I am creating.  Each building is an individual lot.

I have been messing with Ilive reader a lot; resizing props and changing capacity sizes of some of these commercial buildings.  The game gets more interesting as you learn different tweaks and tricks.

Someone had asked me to give a rundown of the businesses and opportunities that are available in Sanderson
Here is a quick rundown of the development that is complete in Sanderson so far-
High Wealth - 2 Households
Low Wealth - 23 Households
Medium Wealth - 20 Households
Commercial Service - McDonalds, Strip Mall, Bank, Gas Station, Eckerds, Advanced Auto Parts, Boomland, Check Cashing, Motel, Red Lobster
Commercial Office - 7 Office Buildings
Churches- 1
Parks - 2
Beach - 1
School - 1
Police Station - 1
Fire Station - 1
Health Clinic - 1
Power Generators - 2
Water Utilities - 1
Garbage - Neighborhood Deal

No industry.  As of now,  I have not figured out which industrial giant I will bring into town yet.  One things for sure is that it will be a company with minimum pollution; there are really strict regulations preserving the tourist attractions in Sanderson Beach.

Here is another quick update,  Everything is still a work in progress:

This is a High wealth res block that I am working on.  It is close to the Sanderson Coast. (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2F7c5abafd-ea52-4288-80e9-83af4622a021.jpg&hash=af92f537654b535d5a43d382cc8db1e3dd15428d) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/7c5abafd-ea52-4288-80e9-83af4622a021.jpg.html)

This is a low res neighborhood on the West Side of Sanderson.  It is behind the Mcdonalds.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2F64894f97-13c0-4e1d-a91f-c2e3d646ab3e.jpg&hash=ac21858476810cce59eb90b0f3e2419c08738b04) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/64894f97-13c0-4e1d-a91f-c2e3d646ab3e.jpg.html)

This is an update of the intersection.  Still a ways to go but it is coming along nicely.

Nice little town you got there.

That last pictures is in PNG-format and they are rather big.
I opened your pictures in IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) and saved in jpg-format with a quality/compression rate set at 75 %.
That made your picture around 1/10 the size of the original. (1.86 mb to 192 kb)

The level of detail that you're putting into your work is really paying off and you've captured the American style really well. I especially like the realism of the commercial lots. Something I thought of when I saw the latest picture was that, in such an open landscape, wouldn't there be farms and cattle fences - or are you planning to urbanise it all?

The level of detail here is phenomenal! A level of complexity that I can attest to; it's not easy to do, but you've done it well. The MMP work is spot on.

Its been a minute but I'm going to post a few teasers to get the blood flowing.

First of all, replies

Bipin - Thank you very much.  Its quite an honor to hear that from you.

Themistokles - Thank you.  At this point this is just going to be a beach town,  As we move further outside of town limits there will be tons of agriculture

Vester - Sorry bout that.  Thanks.

Now lets see whats new around town.  If you look back a few pics there was street that had the mcdonalds, Eckerds, strip mall and gas station... Well that street is complete,  Sanderson has built a bar and a market.   This is for the local citizens.  Also across the street there is office space available in the new office building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2F76159e8a-3221-407d-8e8c-2f85b14cdd03.jpg&hash=932f859301d8d626c7e98e59f48bda3a23de0ed5) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/76159e8a-3221-407d-8e8c-2f85b14cdd03.jpg.html)

Here is a close up for some details for the lot editor junkies out there like me..

Now lets head down the block from the bar.  A mix of medium wealth and low wealth homes are popping up.

Title: How to control Residential Growth Tutorial
Post by: City Planner on June 28, 2014, 01:40:55 PM
Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments.  I wanted to go in depth on how to control the residential growth of your city.  Of course you know it is impossible to plop Residentials.  But today we are going to review/learn how to control the growth of your residentials.  In my CJ all the residential buildings are fully functional and none are abandoned (knock on wood).

First thing we need to do is Check the demand of your map.  Sometimes there can be a demand for only commercial and not residentials.  If there is no demand for residentials, they will not grow.  As you can see here on the chart below I have demand for R$$, R$$$, CO$$$ .  I-AG , I-D, I-M , I-HT
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2Fstep12.jpg&hash=eeee5fac41a0d5375d9dd8c5b6ec2cd45a5274aa) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/step12.jpg.html)

Find a residential that you want to use that fits your demand .  In this case,  I am looking for a R$$ that can fit the feel of a small American town.  I chose the 1935 Marion house.  Now I load it up into the Lot Editor.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorial.jpg&hash=40b2ce7195e62c3b6b398c12a46bfc4ab8207c4c) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorial.jpg.html)

Add your effects to the lot.  The bats usually come in lots that are not complete so you may want to add your own touch to the lot based on your surrounding areas.
First I add the mandatory things like mailboxes, driveway textures, garage, etc.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep2.jpg&hash=a52cb512f546f9c69b602dcf80c0c3963535d435) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep2.jpg.html)

Now we move to the backyard.    Lets place the textures
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep3.jpg&hash=883ca6632c398a4471e7f3ad81f5fd7195503e5b) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep3.jpg.html)

We add then add some backyard props.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep4.jpg&hash=4488f22269ebe7e388ac3b83494daf8ac8a3c72d) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep4.jpg.html)

Now we are done with the Lot.  Save as...  Change name.  Also keep in mind that this is a Stage 3 R$$.  It tells you on the bottom right corner of the editor next to Growth Stage.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep5.jpg&hash=caacceefc8047284fab70064e3dd98a809f43fd7) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep5.jpg.html)

Now we need to make sure that it works in the game with the correct properties. We have to Open Ilive reader.  Make sure you make copies of the files before you begin modding.  First we need to see how many people actually live in this house.  If it is too high or low we can change the amount to fit the demand of our city.  Open up the .desc file of the building you are working with.  Load up exemplar.  This file contains the Capacity Satisfied values.   These values tell you the maximum amount of people that live/work in that building.  I have highlighted it for you.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep6.jpg&hash=273876dac4e343b587072cb16978c1ef5af8e851) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep6.jpg.html)

The capacity satisfied values are in Hexadecimal form.  You can use a hexadecimal to decimal converter to find out what numbers you want to use.  The value of this R$$ before I changed it was (0x00000002A) 42; this was too high for a house this size and technically the demand is not there for it. So as you can see in the example below I changed the R$$ value to (0x0000000C) 12 and the R$ value to (0x0000000F) 15.  The red highlighted location that shows 0x0000000f and 0x0000000C  is where you would change the values.  The top is for R$ and the bottom is for R$$.  Hit Apply on the right 1st and than hit apply on the bottom 2nd.  Click Save...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep8.jpg&hash=0b29e37948347f133d263c0fd403d7623d8aea22) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep8.jpg.html)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep7-1.jpg&hash=2666c17f29196da70968dc87dce830bdb52befe0) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep7-1.jpg.html)

Now we need to Change the Growth Stage.  This will guarantee that it builds as soon as we zone it.  In the Ilive reader open up the lot file that you just created in the Lot Editor.  Load up Exemplar files.  You can see that the growth stage for the lot has a value of 0x03 which means Growth Stage 3.  We want to change this to Growth stage 1 which is value 0x01.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep9.jpg&hash=cce62b1e377baf8f88049490b3c16e90037a239a) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep9.jpg.html)

We are going to zone the residential lot that we just created next to this house .
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FMarionHousetutorialstep10-1.jpg&hash=41cf1cf491cf3f3b40e0cdfbf92a9612fc54deda) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/MarionHousetutorialstep10-1.jpg.html)

And Voila!  Within a few months it grows.  Make it historical and you're done.  As you can see there are commuters and the max size is 12 just like we put in the ilive reader.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2Ffinishalt1.jpg&hash=925a58203d347f4a20f10d6513dd7992071ff3eb) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/finishalt1.jpg.html)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2Fhousechart.jpg&hash=ec5161303f4ddde9ef7dd8c1338e983bfd7a75aa) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/housechart.jpg.html)

And this my friends is how to control residential growths.  I hope you enjoyed.  This should help you in creating cities that you can control based on supply and demand.

Always nice to see someone have a go at custom lotting and you definitely have a great eye for detail!  &apls

What's not so great, however, is the way you've changed the lot to 'fit' the demand, which in itself is a bit backwards honestly. If a lot won't grow, one needs a larger city and/or more demand but that's not the issue here.

The point is growth stages are determined by lot density (residents/jobs per tile), which is a function of Occupant Size and Lot Size among others. To put it another way: there're good reasons (i.e. calculations) for any given growth stage and as such, it's bad practice to change it at will without properly adjusting related values, which includes more than just Capacity Satisfied. Otherwise the discrepancies will accumulate and over time become detrimental to the RCI simulator, causing a plethora of frustrating issues (e.g. no growth despite seemingly healthy demand, lots not upgrading, random abandonment, etc)

Fortunately, all is not lost. Instead of manipulating the building desc by hand in the Reader, I'd strongly suggest you start using the SC4PIM (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2260) to do this. It's far more suitable for the job because it uses the so-called Filling Degree property to (re)compute all the necessary properties for you, thus ensuring the lots are balanced. Though it should be noted that even in SC4PIM it's ill-advised to set the growth stage more than one above or below what it assigns automatically. Again, fiddling with growth stages is a surefire way to screw over the entire RCI simulator.

Other than that, I also think you'll the find the build-in Lot Editor in the SC4PIM more convenient for your lotting, which is rather excellent indeed!

Back before I knew any better, I turned up my nose at lotting. Why use someone else's stuff when you can make your own, so I turned away and started learning how to BAT. But the work I'm seeing you do is great, and you make me wish I had learned something about lot making.

I think I would be safe in saying this last update is my favorite. You are very good at creating beautiful beaches.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.  Its been a long time since I have been on here. I just got back into the groove of playing again.  Today I am going to do a quick update of a storage warehouse that I lotted up.  I will just go through the steps I used to create then plop the storage units.

First I lot all the pieces of the lot.  This warehouse is going to be divided into 3 pieces.  The front office, the storage units and the signs. So here we go...

Step 1)   Create Office

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FStorage%2520office.jpg&hash=83593a12e8ee6fe72e7a8227824525b162b2b9e9) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/Storage%20office.jpg.html)

Step 2)   Create Sign

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2FStorage%2520sign.jpg&hash=1a9ad6d43aafee1b629ebc08b3f605dd207fbd61) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/Storage%20sign.jpg.html)

Step 3)  Create storage houses in back

Thanks Noahclem

First I wanted to show a few updated close ups of a mixed wealth street I finished up.  All the residentials lots were controlled growable lots and they function perfectly with no abandonment.

Thanks.  Yes the playground.  That was one of my first attempts.  There will definitely be more to come.

Thank you everyone for looking.  Here is a quick update. I hope 2 pictures is enough to keep you entertained.  These 2 pictures are at the the south end of the town's city limits.  Also you can see the run down water tower in the distance.  The town gets its water from a neighboring city now.  Its kinda hard to see the power lines but they are there in the dirt area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi130.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp266%2Fvuitton600%2F9e6f9f39-58b6-4f41-8d46-d7f20375e5e4.jpg&hash=6c9c1ac611310396a93c64177f7121d5d28f0c0d) (http://s130.photobucket.com/user/vuitton600/media/9e6f9f39-58b6-4f41-8d46-d7f20375e5e4.jpg.html)

This is a closeup of the rundown tower.  It used to supply the towns water but with the recent neighboring deal it is just a landmark seen from the road when entering town.

Well, the previous posters are right. Your MMP is awesome. So detailed, so mixed and so... organic, I'd say. Very high level of reality!  Looks like really, it was before and then you've started to create the town.

The fence around the water tower is a good addition.
