Title: Greater Featherstall: Salford
Post by: wallasey on June 20, 2011, 06:15:27 PM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FHeader-1.jpg&hash=7590742255c6483ee0dd5c4556c81516d5baf824)

A warm welcome to this, my first MD on Devotion.

Featherstall is the regional capital of an area which incorporates other smaller cities and towns. The city region is defined by the economic draw and impact Featherstall has on the region. There may be a metropolitan area, but as we all know, economies and the places to which people see as their regional centre never follow governmental boundaries.

The MD is loosely based on places in the West Midlands and Northern England. Some place-names may be familiar to you.

I hope you enjoy what I have to show you, various tiles are never finished....there is always something to do!

Without further ado...I give you FEATHERSTALL.

You really have gotten the English style city down - and it shows in the pictures you have shown us!

Cant wait to see more :)

I'm already liking this, how did you get those houses to grow all the same, or was it just grow-delete, grow-delete? :)

Beautiful start wallasey!  &apls &apls  Welcome to the world of MDing, you've shown a lot of potential and I love the West Midland theme. I used to live in South Wales which SimCity-wise should be at least vaguely similar, though not as built up. Interesting transport layout as well, I look forward to the rest of what you have to show is with your motorways!

Onwards and upwards! Since the last update I have jetted around the Country, visiting Manchester, London and Sheffield. I hope some inspiration has rubbed off into Featherstall!

Thanks so much for all these replies....

: That is the look I am going for! Been to Leeds many a time, the waterfront of Featherstall (once fully built) may resemble that of Leeds. Here's hoping!

Football Stadiums will make an appearance at some point, I will show them once all my main urban centres have grown a little more. Stay tuned!

nedalezz Thanks for that, I hope you like it!

RickD Cheers for the comment, I have to say that image is one of my favourites. Rowhouses are the best!

Tomas Neto Thanks!

DanniBee Thank You for the comment, I use a maxis blocker mod! This has pros and cons...pros are getting results like that, but it does restrict growth what with building stages. You may notice there are no apartment blocks for middle and upper classes (Maxis would take over!!!) The blocker was over at Simtropolis which I will find for you.

noahclem: Cheers for commenting, I have yet to visit South Wales as such (only places I have been to are Lampeter, Carmarthen and Tenby!). Motorways will play a major part as we progress on the MD. I have to admit to have created signage imagery to go with some views of the region!

I hope you enjoy the views from Featherstall!

marsh: Thanks mate!

Adetsaj: Cheers for commenting! All thanks to Gascooker!

bat: Thanks bud, I hope the next set is ok!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu2.png&hash=8a31534a9a44f27cc37dba72aaff72efab2348d3)

To start off, I have quickly put together a map from the Region Census, a better version is in the process of being done.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fma.jpg&hash=d78a13eac08efc2b6a703500f545e80b3a2e52ad)
Featherstall is essentially at the South of a natural Lake which is fed by streams and rivers feeding in from the North. The River Millom then flows through Featherstall to Salford and on to Bradford (which is yet to be built). Featherstall, Salford and Braithwaite all have their own municipal authorities, but the City Region is what brings all bodies and administrations together to work as one.

Now onto more general views. The next updates will be more detailed.

Today, the transport authority, Greater Featherstall Integrated Transport Authority (GFITA) will show us their plans put to consultation for the Featherstall Fastline LRT scheme.

Adetsaj: Thanks mate!

Reikhardt: Thanks for stopping by; there is a lot of open space in Featherstall....perhaps too much! Agreed, our historical assets can be crowded over...not always a good thing!

Every householder in Featherstall has received the following flyer to raise awareness of the consultation process.

Trams have been on the drawing board for decades. Funding from central government has been released to GFITA on the basis that a phased construction process will take place. The flyer explains Phase 1.

I notice that you have plenty of roads and avenues. A good idea is to build tram lines in some of them and connect them with the incoming subway system. The result is a more effective transportation system and less cars in the roads. Just my 2 cents. Keep it up

Consultation responses are in, however before things go ahead, the road network needs redesigning and the public informed.

I can't change my sig for some reason, so please keep a look out on the forum menu for updates!

Sciurus:
Thanks!

I have only been to London 5 times in my 22 years, the most recent being a few months ago. I do see where you are coming from but my inspiration is more Northern. Think Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford, Sheffield and a bit of Birmingham. If you like I could post a few of my own RL photos from these places for you?

Tomas Neto:

As always, thanks for your reply!

thefunktopus: Cheers bud, you live in the Capital do you? Cant remember the last time I was in the real Charing Cross....although we do have one in Birkenhead (which is far less glamorous!). Thanks for posting!

Thanks for that!!

A bit of sad news.

My 6 year old Laptop which has the Featherstall Region on it has developed a power problem. It won't switch on! It did briefly but then I moved and the thing cut out again.

Needless to say I am "gutted". I was able to back up my plugins folder but I never got round to doing the same for this region.

I have moved everything over onto a different comp, uploaded SC4 onto it and the terraformer. The silver lining to this cloud is that the specs are better (there is a 5 year age difference) which in turn means I can develop a larger region.

Below is what the new region looks like now, I have started developing it, with a population of around 20k.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fovrvw.jpg&hash=eb26b4c5f119e369e9b20abc997f49ed06502f88)

There is still a lot of terraforming work to do.

From the feedback I have been getting, I get the impression a few of you are interested in the way I build my cities. As I am starting back at square 1, you may get the opportunity to see the work in progress shots as well as the finished article instead of just modifying the latter.

Featherstall still lives on. I always name my main city of the region after this placename. In real life this is actually a road name in Oldham, Greater Manchester (Formerly Lancashire)  (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Oldham&ll=53.545204,-2.128472&spn=0.006655,0.023496&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&z=16&layer=c&cbll=53.545104,-2.128488&panoid=mVQNs5zfOsIcItaI8xc4xw&cbp=12,349.24,,0,1.16)

I hope you will be able to stick with me, I also hope you enjoy the new region. It is not dissimilar to the lost one.

Regards!

Cheers Thomas, I am getting things up to speed, but still a long way to go until we are back to how things were before! I tried the old laptop yesterday...no joy.

-----------------

Just a few work in progress shots from the Braithwaite tile. Slightly flatter in some parts than the previous Braithwaite, but still hopefully just as pleasant.

A little bit of background, Braithwaite sits on the Eastern Shore of the big lake, it is also the administrative town for that area of the region.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FBraithwaite-9May331312492801.jpg&hash=b673c2df5de94d4f82c9f527c058810ae65f2fd9)
Overhead shot of the zones for the town centre, the avenue is a inner relief route providing a bypass for the town centre. A few low res zones have been constructed at roundabouts.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FBraithwaite-10Mar621312501136.jpg&hash=bb6933ff78ad12f7dffd8d0752dfdeac1dea6ee0)
I like the thought of having a church on a hill overlooking the lake. A small wharf by the foot ferry is below.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FBraithwaite-3Mar621312501105.jpg&hash=b228f060767a153b7ec35fb4488b1de456af979a)
Braithwaite Town Hall stands in the centre of the image. The buildings are low density, many will remain as I want the town centre to look historical. However, I will put in the occasional block just to sustain my population base which will hopefully be in the 60-70k for this tile. Currently on 20k so there is still some way to go!

What do people think?

Adetsaj: Cheers bud, I am wanting to keep development on this tile down a little. More will be explained soon!

Tomas Neto: Thanks mate, I hope you like what more I have in store!

art128 Thanks very much! Really? That is one major compliment! Never really thought of entering into competitions!

Not a update per-se, I just watched a tv program on BBC2 about the growth and development of towns. Perth in Scotland was this evening's focus, and the only one of these I have seen. It did tick all the boxes of UK urbanism so it might be of interest to some of you! I would defiantly recommend the Perth episode.

TOWN with Nicholas Crane (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012zy8d)

EDIT:

Couldn't resist posting a pic or two...

I really like this region and think it has great potential. Can i aks which mods apart from the maxis blocker you use? I've been trying to get "gascookers" uk terraces to develop with no such luck,

Excellent work since my last visit!  &apls  I love your use of diagonals and creative transportation system layouts.

Sorry to hear about you losing your old region. The new start is looking very promising though, and I'm sure will end up better than the old. I look forward to seeing it develop

Nice suburbs man! Your building on slope is really wonderful. On the first picture I like how the rowhouses fits well with the school and the old hospital. But you should try to connect that little portion of street to the perpendicular road passing in front of it. On the last picture I love the view. The park, the tower and again these row housing. Good job. :)

Bat: Thanks mate!

Adetsaj: Thanks for commenting bud!

supremec: I hope the next few updates will be to your liking! Thanks for commenting!

jibjohn: There is still a long way to go! To answer your question, the building blocker is all I use. However I know there are various blockers out there. Which one do you use?

noahclem: Thanks for your kind words! I do have some plans for the region and how it can expand! Watch this space!

Tomas Neto:
Good to see you pop by again! Thanks for posting!

976: Thanks for coming by!

art128: Thanks for your generous comments! I try to ensure each building suits their surroundings!

Are you thinking about connecting the streets to the avenue? I have purposefully left the avenue unhindered as it is meant to be a small inner relief route (we will see it in the next update!) . Can you see where I am coming from or would a Google SV link be helpful?

Dantes:I will do my best!

----------------------------------------------------------------

I have a bit of a colossal update planned...so much so I have decided to split it into 2.

Today, I thought it would be fun to take in a cross section of the region which is currently developed, so I have planned a ride on one of the local bus services which operates across town.

Following the UK model, buses around the Featherstall City Region are dereulated, so the operator has the say on what the bus service does...where it goes...fare levels ect. The Transport Co-Ordinators (GFITA) are tasked with co-ordinate services, provide bus shelters and infrastructure as well as print the timetables. An example of which is below.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fg5784.png&hash=cea52baef7f956d37ad41a428f3deb05cf3df8c4)

I hope you enjoy the ride...we will do the first leg to Braithwaite bus station then continue on from there in the next update.....there is some road signage too!

Tomas Neto: Thanks! I hope you like the next leg just as much!

RickD: Thanks for commenting! I hope the signs act as a way of giving a "sence of place" if you know what I mean?

jibjohn: All I would suggest is either using a different blocker....or moving them out of folders. Sometimes the files are so deep in a folder they don't get chosen to build!

Sciurus: Thanks or commenting! I hope you will be on the bus for the next leg!

art128: Cheers for that bud!

976 & bat Thanks for coming by and commenting! Your postings mean a lot!

Question

I have gotten onto developing more of Featherstall City itself....would you like to see this or complete the tour...which admittedly must be the longest bus ride in Sim City history!

Up to you great people!

I've missed a lot of awesome work!  &apls &apls

I'm really liking the bus tour concept--reminds me of Skimbo's nice train tours in Dragon Islands. The signs are also very nice and really add to the character of your MD. Your transit network is very nicely put together and a pleasure to tour. The only thing I'd suggest with that is smoothing out slopes in a couple areas, though overall you've done a really nice job building on hilly areas which is a very challenging part of the game.

As a small detail, I'd also recommend this file to get rid of the "bridge wash" effect below your lovely bridges: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1925 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1925)

Looking forward to more

Noahclem: Thanks for coming by! Yeah I see what you mean there, those rail tours are great! I am really glad you think that about the signs, they are me trying to bring over the sense of place. Which I believe is very important! Yeah, I will do some work on the slopes, I want there to be a few steep scenes as it would bring a Sheffield (http://g.co/maps/j7aug) feel to the city. Can you see what I mean?

Thanks for the advise! The Ripptide Mod has been downloaded!!

Thomas Neto: Thanks for your continued support!

Hi all!

Just to keep you all in the loop, I haven't vanished off the scene, just been a bit busy! I have been looking for jobs (not easy!). Going to a Job Interview tomorrow just outside the City of Chester; see how we get on there ay!

Also, my comp is starting to lag a bit in the sense that on cheetah mode the dates pass lightening fast...but it takes an age for the game to decide to build anything  ??? This means there is a bit of a delay for me to get things ready to my likening!

I have a few things planned, not to give too much away!

What I would like to do is to post more RL images of places which inspire this MD. I feel it may add more context to the sights and stories you see. I have picked a few just for your interest!

I hope to reply to each and every one of you by Monday. I hope that ain't too long!

All the best!

noahclem Cheers bud, I see what you mean about me roads being wrinkly! I reckon you may live at bit far North to imagine Birmingham being tropical, the city was in the throws of autumn weeks before my local area! I hope to be privileged enough to join Best Sellers!

Rick D Thanks for your support, Job interview went well but they were after more experience, not to worry, got another one lined up in Runcorn on Monday!

Jmouse Thank You for honouring me with this accolade, I hope I wont disappoint!

I thought I would show a few images of an area in the southern part of Featherstall, I am still constructing in and around the area so please forgive empty patches!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FDeane-28Jun441318007524.jpg&hash=2eef03bf7792a3c6e4785cbda92b12334e847caf)

Route Running North-South is running into the City Centre from Salford, the avenue crossing forms part of the Ring Road around suburban Featherstall. The road sign for the approaches to the junction would be as follows...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fg3913.gif&hash=18fad238e1c622aa78a28303b1e7f0050b5bfd46)

Moving a little to the West...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FDeane-21Jun431318006487.jpg&hash=1646f6dda06e08fb2712fc9449a20ca815a32b9c)
There's a little more planting to be done in the central reserve of the ring road but on the whole its looking like a pleasant suburb to live in.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2FDeane-18Jun431318006452.jpg&hash=f3a0a2fc0823efaac94fe1614820883842621144)
Finally, we move North of the Ring Road with the suburbs running down the hillside in the vicinity of Salford New Road.

I hope this was enjoyable for you, apologies for the lack of updates recently!

Nice update wallasey  &apls  The suburbs do indeed look like a nice place to live and your work on slopes adds positive character as always. The ring-road looks nice, probably the first OWR3-based one I've seen.

I entered your MD through the link in your signature and was horrified to see a post saying you'd lost the region due to computer failure! I was glad to realize that is not the current situation  :D

Post by: wallasey on October 09, 2011, 06:02:57 PM
noahclem Thanks! Hills play a big part in this region, from small undulating bumps to steep and stark.

Yeah, as this is the primary ring route around the city, I thought it more realistic to have it as OWR3 with a nice divide in the middle, this helps navigate the hills and valleys! It will feature more soon!

I am pleased to say all bugs/ problems with the region are fixed (famous last words!) CTD isn't happening anymore, nor is the freezing. All systems go!

Dantes
Cheers! Indeed, I like to try and show some differentiation between main routes and distributor roads, so my thoroughfares through suburbia tend to look like that. The Birmingham photo is sorta a RL example!

Thanks both for commenting!

Nice update wallasey!  &apls  The question of what to do with misguided planning projects (fairly often involving Brutalist style or other 70's thinking ;) ) is certainly one posited to many RL cities. In Featherstall's case the problems aren't too severe, yet I hope you're able to come up with a couple simoleans should you feel the need for them. The now vacant land reminds me a bit of a part of Milwaukee, WI, USA I used to live near--after removing a freeway that was essentially pointless because local opposition ruled out the rest of its length, a substantial area of land was freed. It didn't develop quickly but the old areas nearby gentrified and decriminalized rapidly.

noahclem: It's a common theme! Although I have not yet heard of a motorway being demolished because it was never going to be completed...we tended to just leave what was there! You might find this of interest (http://pathetic.org.uk/). If something is demolished in my neck of the woods the land is either just left...or some kind of fence is erected with shrubs planted here and there. Unfortunately it's deprived areas such as Anfield, regeneration has been on the cards for the last 20 or so years. Piecemeal demolition and wholescale dereliction has blighted the area, fortunately something is finally being done!

Might have to sleep on the future of Pendleton Shopping City, The real life location (http://g.co/maps/ufk8b) is yet to see anything happen either!

And to answer you from the page 2: I'm from France, and I've been just one time in London, a few months ago. As your style reminded me this city, I thought it was your main inspiration, but as I saw and as I read, you inspire of many cities.

Hi All!

Greatest apologies for the update dearth,

I have finally found work! Although this will mean moving from Liverpool, I will hopefully remain in one of the places which inspires Featherstall.....that being Sheffield!

A update and responses to your postings will follow ASAP!!!

Thanks all for your continued support!

Nice job with the last update  &apls  I'm a big fan of rowhouse neighborhoods and have been using many of bats more recently. MAVE-4 Is a really nice network as well, though I wish there was a way to transition diagonal MAVE-4 to diagonal AVE-4....

Very interesting links you sent me last time (Pathetic Motorways)  :D   I did enjoy having a look around there and thought you might enjoy this site describing the freeway in Milwaukee I referred to earlier:

A big congratulations and good luck on the new job!

Working behind the scenes very slowly, PC with Featherstall on is at home, I am working away during weekends at the minute. Missing Featherstall on occasion...a bit weird I know but when you start making things like this, you cant help but grow an attachment!

Seasons Greetings everyone! I will post a personal reply very soon!

QuoteMissing Featherstall on occasion...a bit weird I know but when you start making things like this, you cant help but grow an attachment!

I hear ya! I tend to think of my SimCity fixation as if I'm a happy older man with a beloved model railroad and a woman and world that generally don't understand what I'm so excited about but think "more power to me" for finding a hobby that makes me happy. And of course SC4D is the model railroading club with the resources to allow you to create things that you otherwise could not ;)

Hi everyone!

Some 7 months after the last post...and replies which I will hopefully get round to soon, I have returned home, and back to Featherstall.

There is a great program on our television channel BBC 2, I reckon it is something which will be of interest to you all.

The Secret History of Our Streets documents 6 streets in London, taking about their history, development and the story of those who live there. It is a great watch.

Link to iplayer  (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01jt9bv/The_Secret_History_of_Our_Streets_Deptford_High_Street/)

Quote from the BBC:

QuoteIn 1886 Charles Booth embarked on an ambitious plan to visit every one of London's streets to record the social conditions of residents. His project took him 17 years.

Once he had finished he had constructed a groundbreaking series of maps which recorded the social class and standing of inhabitants. These maps transformed the way Victorians felt about their capital city.

This series takes six archetypal London streets as they are now, discovering how they have fared since Booth's day.

Booth colour coded each street, from yellow for the 'servant keeping classes', down to black for the 'vicious and semi-criminal'. With the aid of maps the series explores why certain streets have been transformed from desperate slums to become some of the most desirable and valuable property in the UK, whilst others have barely changed.

This landmark series features residents past and present, exploring how what happened on the street in the last 125 years continues to shape the lives of those who live there now.

I hope you are all keeping well, and shall see you all around very soon!

A year overdue...better late than never! This update does have a few images so please bear with me.

I have been working away from home over the last few months, fortunately this has come to a close with my new job back home in Liverpool starting in a weeks time.

nbvc, Adetsaj, bat, apeguy Thanks for your kind comments!

rambuckel Monostyled ay! Terraced houses can look that way sometimes, if you ever come to the UK, take a look at some of them. In the North especially, we took great pride in adding additional details to our door and window surrounds...this could range from plaster work to carvings in the sandstone lintels. I'll dig an example out for you!

supremec & 976 Thanks for your comments, I take on board your point about trees...although to be honest streets like what we saw in that update never really had trees. I could have added some around the motorways though to break up the concrete mundane-ness. I'll take this on board in the future! Thanks for commenting!

Dantes Coming from the same area as the Beatles it is great to see that connection! Thanks for commenting!

Sciurus Thanks for commenting! Glad to see that there is a quintessential Britishness about Featherstall...I hope to continue this forward! Please come and visit the real life places I take inspiration from! You won't regret it!

Last but not least...

noahclem While Siilijoki has evolved considerably, things here haven't! Rest assured the terraced streets of Featherstall are starting to take shape, i'll be posting a photo once the scene is just right.

Thanks for your support last year with wishing me luck in my new job...it was a rocky road to start with but we got there in the end. I am glad to say that I am now back home and getting back to normal! The IT glitches are hopefully resolved too as the old region was working off a 2005 Laptop...the specs weren't great. I am now on a new laptop, fingers crossed it will play ball! Can you tell I am excited??

Thanks all for your comments last year, once again my sincerest apologies for taking so long in getting round to you.

Great to see one of my favorite MDs back in action  &dance

It's nice to get more background on the concept and region and that's a lovely region view. I look forward to you getting around to Featherstall itself but if it's anything like Siilijoki it will take a while to get to the center itself. I included Central Siilijoki in my first 2 or 3 updates and then didn't return for over a year. The teaser picture is lovely--a very nice residential area with an attractive artery winding its way through the middle, all set in a very flattering light. I can't wait to see more

Before we get started, I would like to thank you all for helping Featherstall reach the Best Sellers section of the MDs! It is great to finally get here! Without you guys, we wouldn't be here today.

There's still lots of work to do, which means there will be lots of opportunity to see development shots as well as the finished article.

Today, we will take a closer look at Norbreck, but first things first...housekeeping!

Swordmaster Thanks Willy! There's plenty more where that came from!

noahclem Thanks for both of your postings! Yeah, I thought a bit of context would help out with understanding how the region works and where the ideas or nuggets of inspiration come from! I think the same may happen here to be fair, with Featherstall, I may build a "ancillary" City Centre to support the tiles around, let them develop and mature, then go back to the Featherstall CBD tile and rebuild it aesthetically. We'll see what happens!

Thanks for your very kind words, hopefully each City will have it's own identity/ unique layout!

RickD Great to see you here Rick! Thanks for commenting! I hope my blurb wasn't confusing!

sunv123 Thanks for visiting! The region has it's good tiles...and not so good tiles, but on the whole it is starting to shape out to be a great region!

art128 Thanks for the Welcome back! Look forward to seeing more of you around here!

To compliment this update, I have constructed a map to help with your navigation. It's a proper street map...I still need to insert a few road names, but for today it is good to go.

Linkie (http://gmapuploader.com/iframe/qzUTDrbTD8) I am planning in making this into a more comprehensive streetmap further down the line...just need to think of different streetnames!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor1.jpg&hash=5613ff77493c2e2523c0026d74934c894bf97780)
St Mark's Square is one of the oldest areas in Norbreck Town Centre. The building in the square is reputedly the old town lock up where drunkards would be thrown into for the night if they were caught roaming the streets with ale. Thankfully things have moved on since the early days. The Square is a focal point for the town as it sits between the Arndale Shopping Centre, Trocadero Cinema and the Royal Arcade. Part of the Bus Station can also be seen in this shot too.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor2.jpg&hash=f448d51bcaecb7d780a914615fc0b656bd6a100f)
Braithwaite Moor Road runs along a high route from Norbreck to Braithwaite. House builders in the 30's were attracted to the sheltered hillside the area offered. Here, we face away from the lake. Endsleigh Avenue and Palantine Road are also in view here.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor3.jpg&hash=bf0cf4f88c382f7b880f556b8424e4f3ac99c929)
Horrocks Hall Avenue takes it's name from a mansion house which once stood close to this site. The Horrock's family were large land owners on this side of the lake and were quick to sell off plots of land once the lakeland ferries became a popular means of reaching Featherstall. There is an interesting quirk about the Horrocks family and Railways in this region...but that's for another time!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor4.jpg&hash=fec1fffe02ef14281d761a123ef1e96c0b97d401)
Summer Seat is one of the oldest routes into Norbreck from the South and East, although it has altered a great deal over the years. The last big development was Byrom Circus, the terminus of the Norbreck Spur of the Regional motorway network.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor5.jpg&hash=164f1d4e1642845f6f8a478236f2a27b464f8fe9)
Grinsargh Way runs from Bryom Circus down to Southern suburbs in the Norbreck Peninsular. It's purpose is twofold. Firstly, to bypass South Strand Street and other narrow, tedious Southern routes, and to also feed the southern areas into the M501. The development of this major route did cause some devastation, but fortunately the use of concrete retaining walls was kept down to a minimum.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Funor6.jpg&hash=506915ae493638ff98018ffa858675b3883e12c3)
Everton Terrace was once the most exclusive district in Norbreck. Situated on a high aspect, the villa's enjoyed wide reaching views of the Lake and surrounding hills. As time progressed, pressures of urban life crept up on this district. The Villa's became dilapidated as the area descended into lower ranks of class. Opulent terraces were cleared, all but one remains. Tower blocks became Everton's signature  building. These day's conservation of all buildings has become the norm. The council has plans to re-clad the tower blocks to make them more energy efficient. The Villa's are now subdivided into flats.

I hope this was an enjoyable update!

Good work with the diagonals here. Some of the slopes are a bit tough, though, as are the foundations in picture 3. But the layout of the network looks pretty promising.

On the first picture I like the old tower in that small grass area. The overpass on the second from last picture is nice as well.

And good job on the map! There are still some things to correct such as colors and edges, but it's still a nice start!

Great update  &apls  I love the way you've constructed the transit system with Grinsargh being not a motorway but not a regular surface street either. Nice roundabout interchange, I love the map, and the rest of the city's roads and neighborhoods seem very well done. A fitting way to celebrate Featherstall's promotion

Thanks Willy, yeah my slopes are a bit unfriendly for building on, especially Gascookers BATs where the foundations are so obvious. I did at the time have a chat with him to request any alternatives but alas the foundations the LOTs have are the best. I will attempt to bring a few of these houses down to a reasonable level!

Thanks art128! I wanted the relief route to be leafy rather than ultra urban, if only to block out the road noise! As for the tower...or the lock up tower as it featured here, there is a proper real life example which is world famous. That is the logo of Everton Football Club! The St Rupert's lock up is what they use as their identification.

Thanks for the feedback with the map too, I have done a different type of map today, but I will bear in mind your pointers!

Cheers mate! The roundabout was intended to be rather large as it would form the main gateway into the CBD from the South and East, so it's great to see that look came across!

I am really pleased that the tour around Norbreck was a great tribute to Featherstall's rising of the MD ranks! I hope the next update goes further!

Two weeks ago I went on a day out, I wanted to share an image of what to me, really sums up a Northern UK town.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fdar.jpg&hash=f8323b50cdccc7d85699c4b814c53377d260ffa5)

These terraced houses literally cling onto the hillside! The Mill Chimney is a part of the India Mill Complex (http://www.cottontown.org/page.cfm?language=eng&pageID=486), constructed in 1868 as a result of Lancashire's Cotton Industry. The chimney dominates the town, and is most certainly the grandest of it's type to remain.

Right, back to Greater Featherstall...

Crosthwaite is where Norbreck meets the open countryside of the Rossendale Valley. Due to the development of suburbs; retail and industrial parks are commonplace. Most of these are found off the regional motorway network. In the case of Jc600. we are between the M501 (Norbreck Spur) and the M50, the latter runs North-South through the Braithwaite and Norbreck area. All the standard amenities are on the retail park including a cinema and motel.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu32.jpg&hash=d40848cb60e998fd150d049c0e2b516219d38e5a)
Top O'th Meadows Lane used to connect Crosthwaite with Milne and Moorside. With the development of the M50, this through route was diverted to meet up with Drummersridge Road and the adjoining motorway junction.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu34.jpg&hash=2c1cc9acd1b9ae2126d48d626a8ea7a95c5d9a99)
The M50 superceeded Drummersridge Road in the Milne area. Terraced houses look down on the Middlebrook junction, one of the busiest in the region. Traffic levels have increased with the expansion of Middlebrook Industrial Park, I have recorded over 10,000 cars passing through this junction. As an aside, if you are wondering why the roundabout has normal road sections around the junctions, it is because I like to see the traffic managed, rather than filter all at the same time.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu33.jpg&hash=12911558fbc6cab69024acede56b6512a4771860)
The development in this area of Crosthwaite was rapid. Originally, the town was a farming settlement above Norbreck. However as we saw previously, Featherstall's growth encouraged areas around the Lake to grow with it. Crosthwaite was quickly absorbed into Norbreck, officially becoming apart of Norbreck in 1910. The terraced houses you see here don't join onto Willow Lane due to Fordsley's Villa's standing in the way. This also follows the old field boundaries which ultimately dictated the length and width of streets and developments.

Looking at Crosthwaite Town Centre from different angles, you can see the CBD has a few office blocks and a rather compact central area. The tall office block was constructed at a time when the newly formed Braithwaite Council was attempting to attract firms to outer areas where there was a need for increased commercial employment. This development in particular included a small Shopping Mall on the ground floor.

Church Street is the main thoroughfare, however it is restricted to buses only. Crosthwaite is a great market for the relative bus firms to tap into considering it's extensive housing estates and links into Norbreck, Braithwaite and Featherstall. Due to the rail network only running inland, public transport is highly concentrated to the bus market...and making sure the passengers get a fair deal.

Yes, return of the bus maps. . . very good!

I assume slopes are prohibiting a smooth rail piece in pic 1? Looks a bit painful to that little train.

Excellent work  &apls  The Willow Lane picture with the neighborhood built into all the hills and curves is my favorite. One thing I'd suggest is using merging lanes with your RHWs (type D, E, or F ramps).

I've never seen anything like the RL picture. What a smokestack and roof  :o

Yep, looks very british.

That smokestack is really unique. It is interesting that many UK towns seem to be built around an old factory.

The Chimney or Smoke Stack....

I did take more pics if you would like them posted here or pm'd over to you? In the mean time, this youtube vid may be the best way forward...

Apologies, I don't know how to embed! This 5 minute video should give you some idea of the size and dimensions of the stack, although it has been refurbished since this was filmed back in the early 80's.

Enjoy!

Hi Willy, know you would pick up on my hard rail piece! Its a combination of the slopes and the smooth rail curve which is just off the pic. I'll agree the train does look as if it is struggling! Glad you liked the bus map...it needs updating already!

Thanks Noah! It's not a bad area round Willow Lane is it? haha!

Thanks for your ideas regarding my motorway junctions, merge lanes would be a good idea! I'll take another look at that junction!

The chimney is one of a kind that's for sure! The vid I posted later on is of a renowned local celebrity who climbed the whole structure!

I have more images with the chimney in it, although no proper closeups. Have you had the chance to watch the youtube link? It is of a chap climbing it...whats great is he gives you dimensions and goes into detail about the structure. If you would like me post more pics, that would not be an issue at all.

Job done!

There is no chimney like it, there was a bigger one in a neighbouring town but it is long gone.

This type of development is more prominent in Lancashire and Yorkshire where the cotton and woolen mills were commonplace, to a lesser extent Derbyshire was the same, although only in the Derwent Valley (now a World Heritage Site). Towns in the Midlands tended to be centered around foundry's, hence the reason why the area to the West of Birmingham is called the Black Country. There's other places like this too! not forgetting Sheffield and it's Steel heritage.

In short, this is what is left of the UK's Industrial Revolution!

Sadly today is a short but hopefully sweet view of East Featherstall. It's suburbs again...I will get some CBDs completed soon hopefully!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu41.jpg&hash=2686a03db0426dc19d095eb4c5f39234b406556c)
East Runshaw Road runs through Stanneybrook, connecting lower reaches of Huyton and the small town of Runshaw to Featherstall itself. The route is typical of Featherstall suburbia with wide avenues filtering through the green and leafy surroundings.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu42.jpg&hash=a272e2dd294cf0e1bb4c68820536c28c5a8f8742)
Again, we see East Runshaw Road, but a little further toward the City boundary. Most of these routes are either widened lanes or diverted from old turnpikes. Developers in the 30's wanted traffic flow through these new housing areas to be a simple as possible. Originally, some of the central reserves had trams running up them, however these were withdrawn in 1957 when trams became unpopular. Now, they are back on the cards again as Featherstall and the associated authorities look for alternatives to relieve traffic congestion.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fu43.jpg&hash=192547d92f5131c49c8bc9c2874a0bfb509627ac)
Still Work in Progress here! Queens Drive is the outer ring road which connects the various suburbs together, saving the need to navigate around back lanes.

Sadly that is a wrap for today! I shall get back to the coalface for more images of Featherstall to share with you! I may do a Highways orientated update next!

Stay Tuned and thanks for your support!

I don't see the SPUI get a lot of action in MDs or SC4 pictures in general, so it's neat to see it here.  The use of the AVE-4 90° WRCs for the trumpet interchange is an interesting idea; it lowers the speed, but this actually makes sense for a 180° curve.  Good work, Wallasey.

I find the SPUI to be very useful with the Avenue interchanges, We have normal turn lanes in the UK so this isn't far from the real thing for me. They are under-used defiantly!

The original Trumpet was far tighter using conventional RHW curves. This looked terrible so I went back to the drawing board and got that result! It is still a little tight but there are constraints surrounding the area. For example the slopes, railway and built up areas which don't really need demolishing.

Thanks for your comment!

Excellent update. Those road signs are superb and I like the motorway heading through those cuttings.

Thanks! I didn't like the thought of driving a wide motorway through a cutting, so splitting the carriageways seemed like the best way forward. This set up does exist in real life too!

Thanks for your posting!

Excellent work  &apls  It's nice to follow the motorway through such a long stretch and the signs are a very nice addition, particularly fitting for the style of Featherstall. You have a number of really neat interchanges here and I also really liked the multi-level section of the motorway cut into the hillside

Hello Noah, yes I thought showing a nice lengthy section would give a greater perspective on the region. The multi level section(s) have been a real help aesthetically as I did not want a massive cutting or  scar in the landscape, it wouldn't feel realistic to me!

Thanks for commenting, I hope you have had a great festive period over in Siilijoki!

Merry Christmas
and
Happy New Year!!

Nice suburbs and town centers!! &apls
I prefer the last update with the overview of the M50.

And you too! Thanks for your kind words! I shall show more of the M50 and it's counterparts soon!

It has finally happened...I have started work on Featherstall City Centre, today I want to show you a few provisional views. Please note this is likely to be my Mark I version so things could change as time marches on. The city is yet to "come alive" as not all the surrounding tiles are fully built up, so less people are coming into the City Centre, hence the rather "dead" feel. Hopefully things will pick up.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fd5_zps5e55c379.jpg&hash=a521bd12f4960708ca2f732417fb2939f103daa6)
Shopping is one of Featherstall's biggest attractions with it's malls, markets and wide shopping streets. With a multitude of fascinating buildings mixed in, Featherstall is a big destination when it comes to culture. St Stephens Temple is one of the oldest buildings in the urban core, taking a prominent position on the riverside.

Briggate Shopping Mall stands next to the "Briggate" which means "road to the bridge".

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fd4_zps1f8f3ea8.jpg&hash=70c1990e8470bdd1a00f33125cc3ee0fdf841a04)
The New Trocadero is the multi coloured building in the bottom left, this houses some of Featherstall's premier entertainment facilities including a Cinema. Standing in the centre of the scene is the Indoor Featherstall Market, housing a wide array of wares and exclusive goods. Market's have always played a big part in Featherstall culture, with many generations of families being employed on the various stalls within. The family aspect of the market is a huge selling point for tourism, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. To the right is the Victoria Arcade...I will have more on that in a forthcoming update!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fd3_zps01b95a82.jpg&hash=d24ab3dd5e3898e8345706d67e99c062d9523856)
Featherstall City Hall stands proud amongst the city skyline. Looking upriver, the council chamber has a fantastic view over the hustle and bustle of city life. Originally, the grassed area to the front was built over. However, as time progressed, it was considered that the City Hall should stand overlooking gardens too.

Next door is the Williamson Art Gallery, this also doubles up as a magnificent exhibition venue.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fd2_zpsdb9e6ac4.jpg&hash=41c92973f8bfb5b7dd743dea825e61e220cad228)
The City Hall stands close to the Financial District. Business is big for any thriving city, this area has always been the chosen spot for commerce on the banks of the Lake, the giver of life to the City and it's environs. Some landmarks have been overshadowed by glass and steel structures. St Hilda's Church is soon to be dominated by another new building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff167%2Ftranmererusko%2Fd1_zps08d58594.jpg&hash=5a4a3c7108f79948451107e0ddd4f108c6259a5b)
Quickly popping over into Stanneybrook, the inner city residential areas are springing up ok, I just need to surround the Featherstall tile in areas like this. Stanneybrook has made an appearance previously!

I hope this update was interesting for you all, There is still much work to be done!

Happy New Year for tomorrow!

Great past couple of updates. Loved all the RHW stuff, despite a couple of bumps in the road here and there. The city center is coming along nicely, although I'd love to see an overview as well.

Cheers
Willy

Firstly, All the best to each and every one of you for 2013! Apologies for the belated good will!

It's been difficult juggling RL with SC, but Featherstall is never far from my thoughts!

Regarding Featherstall City Centre, It is due to under go a bit of tweaking, there were a few elements I was not happy with...nothing around the fringes seemed to gel!

I am struggling to to iron out the creases! I think most of the issues lie with diagonals when I attempt to drag another route onto it at an angle! There's plenty of RHW stuff to come! Thanks for commenting!

I don't mind some more of these suburbs; you're very good at it.

Any chance for some wider screens of them? Maybe a mosaic? You seem to be stuck in the same zoom, try bringing some variety in that area.

Cheers

Excellent work on the last couple updates  &apls  The city center features a very nice selection of buildings in a well-planned layout. A couple of the open areas (parks and plazas) seem a little empty which you might consider MMPs to resolve (trees, flowers, people, etc). The transportation featured next is fascinating, particularly the 4-way interchange. I'm curious what extra details on that you've yet to reveal. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Willy, yeah I need to do a mosaic soon, although I am never sure if any of my scenes are ready for that or not. I'll make an attempt and let the good people of SC4 decide!

The suburbs are coming on nicely, glad your liking them!!

Thanks Noah, I know what you mean, there does need to be more life and activity. The issue was that people were getting sucked up by buildings surrounding the main CBD, so no one was actually going there. I have since re-modelled Featherstall, although this may be re-modelled again to accommodate features in NAM31.

I'll be coming back to the Dinsdale Interchange in the near future....a road trip may be on the cards!!

Thanks for visiting...I need to come and visit Siilijoki!!
