Title: Truly NUTS: Cali at BAT
Post by: Cali on February 26, 2011, 10:04:34 PM
Ok, I've been around here for a while. I picked up batting a few years ago, And after reading philipbos tutorial 500,000 times I figured it out.  But tragedy and real life struck. It has prevented me from ever achieving anything more than a few maps on simtrop and a street light or two . Thus I forgot how to Bat.  Anyways with out further ado, I present the first for the sc4d community with many more in the works. Please feel free to critique as any advice is still better than none.

This one I have deemed to be a Dr office. At the moment I have some bugs( out of scale, couple outside lights don't work, plus it's about ten feet in the air...lol.

It does however show up in game(whew)

It's a good start, but there are some things that need to be done:
- This building would require custom LODs, so the streetlights won't dissappear on any other props.
- The model misses some detail, although I don't know what. It just feels empty.
- The LOT textures look horrible, but I guess you'll gonna work on that later  ;)

Best,
Maarten

In addition to what Maarten already said:

- Textures are bit weird and not very detailed, you should change at least the roof texture.
- LOT indeed needs a lot of work.

Otherwise, nice start, with bit of tweaking that should make a real good building!

Indeed, the lot was only used so I could see if it would show up in the game. I'll change the roof texture for sure. thanks so far  :)

I changed the roof textures. I'm thinking about doing away with the whole pitched roof thing(at least for this) Let me know. More updates later.

Nice start. Way better than mine years ago
First of all, i would recomend you to place your model next to other's custom bats. This will help you to fix your scale issues and to see what your textures should be like.
About the pitched roof, is just a matter of taste, so is up too you. Although it might work if done properly, i don't think it fits very well. But again, i might be pretty wrong about this last ::)
Hope to see some improvments ;)

Not knowing a thing about batting, but loving the creations in my citys, I must say I LOVED the piched roof. Most buildings I see in game are flat. But Pegasus docks have some great sloped roofs.

Where can I get this great doctor office?

Hey all!, Ok, I have some new updates, I know I've been gone for a while and I apologize, but real life has really messed me up. But now all is quiet so I figured it's time to start working again. so here is a building that I haven't decided what I want it to be, so maybe my fellow Nuts can help me out. That Willcox House building looks cool, but that red is way too clean and bright, it looks like a toy.

Also what kind of building is it?  The lot is fenced in and I am assuming it is a hotel or apartment building, in which case I would say the lot seems out of place.  It would need parking, a better suited lot. Overall the lot seems too big/ out of place.

Also still assuming it's use is an apartment building or hotel, the nightlighting seems odd too, not every light would be on in all the rooms.

I like the building model itself and think if you put some more time perfecting it it could look really great.

Textures on the truck repair place look much better (although I would say the ground texture around the building proper is way too clean and bright for a place that does greasy vehicle work), but the nightlighting again is it's weak spot.  Try to add some color to the signs and put lights on in the open bays.

It is also a great model and something we don't really have in SC4 currently (lots of car repair but not really much for big truck repair places) so I hope you take the time to perfect it before releasing it.  We will happily wait a bit for a superb bat, which I think these can become.

Nice progress Cali. I think, for the first one, the wall texture needs to be desaturated a bit. As mentioned, it does look a bit plastic and toy-like. The basic style of it works pretty well though. It's a big lot, but it works with the building.

As for the second, it looks good. I like the bit of dirt at the bottom of the walls, but I would also suggest a slight gradient to it, darkening from top to bottom maybe 10-20% as it goes.

Hello Cali

I can see you have been making quite some progress since February, and Willcox House is certainly coming along.

I can also see that you are using many of the textures that were shipped with the BAT.
Nothing wrong with that, as these will blend in with the game, but bear in mind that the Maxis modellers manipulated each of those textures considerably in an image editing program prior to using them on their models. In addition to learning how to model, an equally important part of the learning curve in using a program like the BAT is getting the textures right.

Do you have an image editing program? There are many free versions. I use Gimp; others use paintshop/photoshop versions. Any program will suffice, so long as it can handle layers. But it is imperative as every texture - even ones from very good sites such as CG Textures - need to be altered in some way prior to application. Alternatively, you can create your own textures.

So, back to Willcox House. I like the idea of the red feature areas...but using a block colour such as this won't work if you are aiming for something believable. I'll assume that this material represents painted concrete in your BAT.
So, continuing to use those textures that came with the BAT, I select the following: The maxis street tiles and the Maxis concrete. Both of these are 256x256px in size. These are designed to work in 16m2 world of SC4. When you have a larger area to cover, you will need to make the textures larger to cover that greater surface area properly.

The first thing I do is size up the BAT. For your walls on this BAT, you would need a texture anywhere between about 512 -1024px in height but for this demo I will just double the area and make a three new blank textures of 512x512. With this new size, I can fit 4 of the Maxis 256x256 images within the work space (2 across and 2 down), so rather than stretching and tiling the textures within the BAT, I am likely to have a single texture that covers my wall area.

Next, I fill one of my blank 512x512 textures with four of the Maxis concretes, then the other 512x512 with 4 of the Maxis street tiles. To each of these I add an alpha chanel (which is a transparency layer) and then fade the two by varying degrees (about 10-15% for the concrete and 30% for the street tiles). I manipulate the colour of the street tiles to make it a warm terracotta. I adjust the saturation and brightness until I am satisfied. I also blur the concrete texture so that the deep lines aren't so visible and add a little reddish hue.

Using my third 512x512 surface, I copy the new concrete texture and then paste the street tiles over that.
I then add a reddish gradient and use the dodge/burn tool to ensure that the surface isn't too clean. After adding these, I make a final adjustment to the saturation and brightness and save as a new texture. This took about 5 minutes.

I then applied it to a very cut down mockup of your BAT to see how it would look.
For comparative continuity, I've just used the brick texture that came with BAT, but would not recommend it as this tiles very poorly. Although, using the above technique you could adjust this texture as well. I have attached the red tile texture and the screen shots - feel free to use this, or adjust as you wish.

Good luck

Cali, it's wonderful to see you back at BAT. It's just good fortune that I saw your post - for some reason I didn't have the thread bookmarked. Possibly because I had to reinstall Yahoo!Mail on the laptop so I could see my email, and I reformatted the HD on my desktop twice.

Your work is shaping up well, but texturing is the most difficult part. I have a roof that's giving me a fit right now, and I don't usually have quite that much trouble with roofs. I like the simple, functional shapes of your structures. And listen closely to mattb's advice. He'll be a great help to you, and I'll shoo Arne (Vester) over this way, too.

I have you bookmarked now, so I'll definitely be watching closely.

Mattb325, posted some good advice about the textures.
I use tons af time on them. Have 10 different copper texture, if not more.

The roof just look to clean to be. A bit to solid.
The top of the wall on the tower, should be cover with some sort of metal. (Here its a civil engineering speaking) or the wall will be soaked.

You have built a good structure that looks like a repair shop. I like the half-open bay door - most people wouldn't have thought of that detail.

To improve this already-good model, the roof needs more grit and grime. If I might borrow one of Matt's favorite lines, "Darken the roof *fill in name*." The building could use a bit more grime at the bottom, too. It's the base texture that screams out, though. You have the grunge idea down pat, but the dirty and clean areas don't make sense. Tire tracks and motor oil stains might work better.

Also, you need to place the largest semi rig in front of a bay entrance and make sure it will fit through the opening. The gray one in the back with the blue trailer would work just fine. From what I see in the first photo, those road hogs couldn't squeeze through the door.

These are just things I learned in my early days of BATting while I was creating the Mouse House, and I'm passing them along to you. My garage door wasn't big enough and the Sims would have bumped their heads on the eaves. :D BTW, you've done a good job on the night lighting. I've no idea how to create the spots like you did.

Joan has some good advice, though I would say that the roof actually looks pretty good as it is.

One thing I noticed, was the ground texture. Is that supposed to simulate oily concrete or something like that? If so, it's a bit black and white for that I think, and a bit overdone. I'd suggest removing it, or at least reducing it to an interior floor of the building. Other than that, the night lighting, especially that of the blue signs looks good. I think the daytime color of the blue is a bit saturated though. Perhaps desaturate the sign color there.

I'd say get rid of the ground plane, instead make some ground textures for the game and apply them to your lot. works and looks better imho

ok, did some repair work and a couple other things i.e replaced the a/c textures with more realistic ones, added barriers, and new bay door textures. Also i shortened the floor texture to just be inside. In addition, i also fixed the nightlighting and added a couple more signs.

Looking much better, Cali  I like the way you've added more detail to the bay doors. You definitely have the right idea with the tire and oil tracks on the concrete. The only problems I see are lines of demarcation and some repetition. The night views look good, but where did the spotlights go? %confuso

Thanks for sharing the lighting parameters. I'm going to have to add some porch lights to the Lodge, so this will give me exactly what I need, and even a basis for experimentation.

Looks good to me, Cali. And I just about lost it when I saw the Nuts'! :D What kind of photo editing software do you have? If you've already answered the question elsewhere, my apologies. I'm already two hours behind schedule today because we went hunting for a desk for one of my other computers so I didn't take the time to hunt.

Do you intend to upload to the LEX? If so, I need to get a README template from Shaun. Also, you'll need to post the render here in an attachment because teams are expected to scrutineer their own member's work before it goes in for a final checkup. There's a good checklist here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3204.msg97905#msg97905), and I need to get a copy for myself, too.

Good work here...

thank you for your support. I would love to upload here to the LEX. Now as far as uploading the render,is there a file size limit? I've never done this before. At the moment, I'm getting ready to test it in game to make sure it works alright before i send it away. Now the lot it's on isn't exactly what it's going to be, I'm only using it as a test lot. Also, if you could, Explain to me what needs to be done so I can Get everything prepared for upload. And thank you and everyone else for their kind words and suggestions. Oh, I have photoshop, but i've been able to get away with windows paint...only cuz I don't really know how to use photoshop:)). Thank you again :)

The shop and lighting look great, but the concrete around it needs work. I can try my hand at it if you need help and don't have good image-editing software. Just wrap up the textures in a zip file and attach them here. Also send me some in-game shots with the grid turned on.

If you want to work it out for yourself, you might want to create the textures similar to the street textures in NAM. Make them in such a way as to create common pathways. For example, think about where trucks will be parked while the drivers go inside the shop. Also consider the truck's path when it leaves the back bays. I'll try and find one of those things that's worth a thousand words to kind of go by. :D

I'm really pleased to see so much improvement in your work... :)
-Joan

*EDIT* I just went back again  and looked at your first post today. You can't upload to the LEX until your project goes through the entire scrutineering process. Technically I could, but I would not do so without guidance from an LEX administrator. I didn't upload the Mouse House. Barby did it for me because I was having computer problems at the time.

I'm far from being a Photoshop expert, but I use it to make my own textures and I've kind of learned the drill when it comes to what's expected in a BAT and lot. So let me know if I can be of help.

Thanks for the clarification Joan, I know about the scrutiny team, And I'm good with all that. I just need some info on how to start this. I would never want to upload anything that isn't right,(plus my obsessive compulsiveness won't let me..lol). I decided on a certain texture(plus one without)so for now, I'm posting an in-game shot without the base texture, and to tell the truth it kinda looks better. Also there is a line of demarcation in zoom 4, but it isn't visible in all other zooms, or the lot editor, so I don't know why the bat hates me so much.lol Anyways, As far as the lot goes, I put together a small list of whats on it(not that it matters, it's a test lot, but if it was to be used it would be helpful to know whose props are being used.-Jason

I have some nice concrete textures and I'll see how much of a mess I can make out of them in the next few days, Cali. *Obsessive compulsive? Not moi! Hey, there's a little black smudge there I need to get rid of. Never mind that you can't see it in game. I know it's there and I won't be able to sleep tonight.* :D

I've spent much of today getting my old computer set up on its new desk so I can do some lotting. It still has Win XP on it so I can run PIMX which I cannot do in Win 7 SP1. Looks like you're doing some good lotting yourself. It's the details that count, and and you're placing them well.

I like the glare of the sun on the big doors. Have you done a test render and got into the game to judge scale? The earlier you do it the less last minute scaling you'll have to do.

Cali, you're going to shoot me for this: Nuts' should be Nut's, and either take out the period after R, or add a period after V. See there, I'm not O.C. at all! ?=mad)=

And Jim is right about the scale. Barby once told me to include a few Sims on the lot, too, in order to judge scale. You can remove them before saving the lot if you want to.

And I thank you for the texture, too, Cali. Now I'll have to learn how to make one for my other windows.

I didn't notice the fence before, but it's an excellent idea. Even though this is a 24/7 operation, those big rigs need to be behind a security fence. Some lights out back might be a good idea, too. I like the school buses, but I would separate them.

Cali, sorry I've been neglecting you. I have some "homework" to do, but I should be finished by Friday night and back in here Saturday. You definitely should keep the repair shop. If there are any others on the LEX, I don't know about them, and I would be pleased to use it in Atascocita.

What is this newest model? I can't read the sign. The roof texture looks good. Did you make it yourself in PS? The shingle texture looks good, too. I like the variation in colors. Except for some roof junk, this BAT is close to being finished.

Good work...

hello all, I worked on the abandonded building today and I like it better now. I fixed the sign the best that I can without it being totally unrealistic and added a little bit of roof junk.

One thing I would suggest with the sign, and also with the A/C units, is, for the sign, to add a back panel to it, so the texture isn't seen back there: right now, we can see it, and it's backwards. Perhaps a plane with a few support pieces to suggest a structure for it. With the A/C units, perhaps make a plane (flush up against the side, or just away from it by maybe .01 to avoid overlap of textures), and use that for the control panel side and get a texture that's different for the other sides. Most HVAC units have their meters and all on one side, the top tends to have fans, or other features, right now your texture is repeated on all sides of it.

Aside from that, I like the idea of an empty building for the game, a few versions of it could help simulate a modern day ghost town, or area fighting depression.

There isn't much I can add to Matt's assessment, Jason. I agree we need some "For Sale" signs and neglected buildings. Every town and city has them, even in a good economic atmosphere. I don't know if anyone would notice the HVAC textures or lack of fan grills, but it's a good idea to go ahead and change these details anyway. I didn't notice, but I don't do commercial.
