Title: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: seraf on July 21, 2014, 11:47:15 AM
I guess it's time to start my own thread here too :)

Some of you probably know me from simtropolis or remember my old thread here. In this thread I will be posting progress of my BATs under NYBT flag :)

For the start - nearly finished University Club from new York City: (some details and textures missing)

Glad to see you over here on SC4D. Keep up the excellent BATing!

Wow, that's a beauty! Other than the lack of depth to the top level/superstructure and the previously mentioned missing textures it looks about perfect. Is the below ground level stuff something for slope tolerance? Welcome back to SC4D :)

Of course your name rings a bell. And i`m glad you are still batting New York Buildings.
I`m currently working on my own recreation of the city that never sleeps (and i`m miserably failing at it ::)) and i`m always in the need for lots and bats that fit in there.
Your newest creation is coming along great.Sure, there is still some roof junk missing but i`m sure you will add them when it`s time.
Oh,and i`m also wondering what that green stripe below the building is for.
Thanks for showing and keep up the good work. &apls

Bipin - Glad to be back :) Thanks for comment!

noahclem - Thank you :) No, it's just a light well that was there in building's early years. In fact real building is/was on slope. That balustrade on ground floor actually should go gradually down from the building. But I didn't know how it would look/work in game and also I thought that most players will place the building on flat gorund anyway so... I hope you are not terribly dissapointed :)

deora - Thank you for comment :) I hope you will find the final version of roof to be complete ;) (I'm not a particular fan of modern/chaotic roofs with tons of roof junk)

romualdillo - Thank you :)

Almost done ;)

Thank you Dantes :)

Looks like this is the final version: (I might try to make the flag a little bit less dark and saturated but that would be all)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2FAlex90%2FSimcityContent%2Frender-51.png&hash=cf8f3dd791255b5d506cb8d126172cc6a0cbdc2a)

And I have a question, does someone know if it would be possible to make NAM tram-avenue the way Tram-on-street is made? That is - the cars and tram would share the space where the rails are. I would also like to change the white/beige tile that is underneath the rails to asphalt :)

Ahh,your BAT looks awesome. The textures are perfect and the roof is also very well done.Personaly,i`m also not a huge fan of old buildings with chaotic roof mounted thingies like new AC`s and such, but it`s still better than modern additions like more floors or a penthouse. Some of these later additions atop an old house looks like someone wears an ugly hat.
Besides that for people who like the rooftop more modernized there are props with AC units and such. $%Grinno$%

Wow, these are just stunning  :o  You obviously weren't kidding about "Master of Beaux-Arts" :D

QuoteAnd I have a question, does someone know if it would be possible to make NAM tram-avenue the way Tram-on-street is made? That is - the cars and tram would share the space where the rails are. I would also like to change the white/beige tile that is underneath the rails to asphalt :)

I'm very interested in the same thing or at least very similar things! The tram network is a bit tricky in that there are so many different kinds in RL that it's difficult to know how to add more options and more realistic ones without ending up with a million puzzle pieces. I'm not active at the moment since I'm preparing to get married in a week and that and work have sucked up pretty much all my time this summer but I have been working on a project to improve the NAM's tram system, along with a few other people. The end product should have the area under the tram rails and the sidewalks customizable in the same way that regular sidewalks are now (so asphalt would definitely be possible).

This is an old texture but is this what you mean by the cars and tram sharing the space where the rails are? This network exists now but with a different look.

Here's another example of some ideas I've had with it. The fanned stones are likely to be replaced by a texture vortext has been working on (click)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Fnoahclem%2Fitstime%2Fmemo_tia_pic.jpg&hash=8ab6a61588f43dfeca192ae190da0faea970766c)

A draft of the 4-way tram-in-avenue intersection texture:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Fnoahclem%2Fitstime%2Ftram_crossing_all_textures_masks.jpg&hash=ce38a3fe840501d47231328d345dbfd3bb6c88dd)

And as long as I'm out of hiding briefly....might as well share a new tram station model reddonquixote drew up as part of the project ;)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Fnoahclem%2Fitstime%2Ftramstop.jpg&hash=d0b09fb5f3003c4a768829dd48d189ef169fe7f2)

If you have questions about how to change the look of the tram textures yourself I'd be happy to offer what assistance I can :)

Bipin - Thank you :)

deora - Thank you :) And I second what you said about adding more floors what unfortuately seems to be the trend those days :/

david1865 - Thank you :) My to-do list is very full those days, I have at least five started models from NYC and like three or four from other places so while Harvard University Library is beautiful building I don't think I will have time to make it anytime soon :(

noahclem - Haha thanks! :D And thank you very much for your answer! :) (and sory for the delay with mine). Anyway - I'm glad to hear that what you are saying about customization. I want to make my city look like the cities from around 1900 so it would come very handy :)

What I had in mind was more like this:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fa%2Fa1%2FElectric_trams%2C_George_Street%2C_David_Jones_corner_from_The_Powerhouse_Museum_Collection.jpg&hash=53e1e516d7c4aefcfd8cc0a6453815328e662b49)

You know - the rails are laid out on the street but without any special indication that they are there and horse carriages and cars share the lane where rails are with the tram :) (The texture looks great BTW)

The station looks nice!  For now I think I won't have time to experiment with making custom textures for trams (I really want to finish some of the buildings I started BATing) but I'll keep it in mind! :)

And of course congratulations on your marriage  &apls ;)

Gugu3 - Thanks :)

Very nice picture you found Seraf! As it so happens I too have an interest in bringing a historic feel to SC4 (see the historic harbor  (http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php?topic=11088.msg228996#msg228996)project) and my textures which Noah mentioned reflect this as well.

This is a wip pic from some time ago but yeah, something similar with Noah's improved GLR tracks is what I have in mind. Now if I could find the time for it, that'd be great.  &sly  :D

Hi Seraf!! I'm very glad to found others trying to build their cities with a 1900 look. That's why I started batting. I'm still not very experienced, but if I can help with something, please tell!! I think vortext's textures look incredible. I hope you find time soon to finish them!!

Keep the good work!!!

seraf, it's a bit hard to tell what you're after from the picture you posted as the details of the pavement aren't very visible. Do you mean something like the paving stones in Vortext's example or do you mean the exact same pattern of stones under the shared tram/carriage lane as under the carriage only lane? And again it's a very neat project you're working on.

I hear you on the time problem! Finished the wedding (which included a horse-drawn carriage ride from the church to the reception incidentally) but will be quite busy catching up on everything before heading out to Tanzania for a safari honeymoon until the 20th. I do look forward to seeing a draft texture with your pavement and my rails and alignments and will try to make sure I've got updated and properly formatted versions of them uploaded before leaving town if I can. It will be nice to move forward with this when we can find the time!

thanks romualdillo & cmdp123789! As I said these textures were drafts made a while ago, eventual tracks will be different (see Noah's pics below) though the pavement will most likely end up pretty similar.

Yes, it'll be nice to get this up and running. I just started a new job so it takes some time settling into a new routine and such. Enjoy the honeymoon!

vortext -your textures look wonderful! The ones I saw in your thread are great looking too! :) I look forward to see them finished but it looks like we all suffer from chronic lack of time ;)

romualdillo - So it's just like for me ;) I too started BATting because there wasn't many NYC buildings and that was/is the city that I wanted to recreate.

noahclem - I was going to say that I meant the same exact pattern under both lanes but on the second thought I would be extremely satisfied with both :) I hope you enjoy your honeymoon!

No update today, I'm working on something that I can't really show you guys right now but I'm working :)

EDIT: BTW guys, it is just me or the asphalt back then was lighter than today? I mean, on old photos it sometimes looks so bright...

Small update on University Club:

I was working on special version (I call it 4th of July or Celebration version :D). I don't know if I will end up releasing it because I'm not sure people gonna use it but anyway, take a look:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2FAlex90%2FSimcityContent%2Frender-52.png&hash=c6fe9969ef2d31afa1f0da5d990046273b676feb)

Please don't mind the topiaries and old textures, I started this version before finishing standard version, also some of the flags are missing (under balcony as well as between the ground floor windows). The decorations are only on side elevation because it faces Fifth Avenue while the elevation with entrance faces "only" the street :)

Quotebecause I'm not sure people gonna use it but anyway

Are you kidding me?This is an amazing detail for the building. It adds a very festive touch to the urban grittynes and also adds some color splotches to the urban landscape which is ruled by greyish concrete, red bricks and lots of asphalt...
I love the detail.
I don`t understand a single thing of modding in SC 4,but couldn`t you add this 4th July Deco as a seasonal Deco which will only appear during the summer?
Sort of like the lots with reappearing christmas themed things...
As you may see at the specs under my Avatar you might notice i`m from Germany, but i love how Americans decorate lots of things for the 4th of July. It`s like they are decorating for a second Christmas, just only a bit shorter and with white blue red instead of red white green gold....you name it.

Maybe you could render out the facade with the flags to a separate prop, that then could be made into a timed prop.

Maxis did a lot of facades for shops like that (not timed).
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: romualdillo on August 13, 2014, 09:09:21 AM
The flags look great!!! I think vester is right. You can render the decorate facade as a separate prop and add it to the lot, so everyone can take it out if they want to use it in non-american themed cities.
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: art128 on August 13, 2014, 09:13:32 AM
I don't think you should care if people will use it or not. BAT it because you like it and release it if you feel like doing so. At least that's my philosophy. :)

I quite like the 4th July version. It isn't something I've seen often in the game. :)

I'll have to agree about Vester about a timed prop. That seems like the most logical way to put it inside the game. However i'm not sure about rendering the whole façade as a props. Wouldn't it create graphical glitches?
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: seraf on August 13, 2014, 02:14:10 PM
deora - Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it :) Actually that's what I wanted to do, include it the way that it would appear around 4th of July in the game :) I also like how Americans decorate buildings and houses for their Independence Day, most nations of Europe haven't done that even in old days which is a pity :(

vester - I will try to do that :) I hope I can find some tutorial on this.

romualdillo - Thank you :) Yes, it's a good idea.

art128 - I'd say your philosophy has a lot of reason in itself :) Thank you, and when you put it like that... I'm not sure either. Maybe vester could cast some light on this?

I finished the work with 4th of July version and started work on night one. Here are some first tests:

I just want to light some more of big windows.

And I played with another idea: (still unfinished)

Maybe some windows lights are a bit too bright.
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs

self illuminated windows are indeed too strong.

Why not going with floor illumination for all the windows and increase the intensity of the self illumination.

The rest is superb.  :)

art128 - Thank you :)

Girafe - Thank you :)

I tried to make the self-illuminated windows a little less bright as you suggested guys, Girafe I'm not really into the floor illumination, I mean I never used it and I don't really know how to. You see that I rather model the interiors (when the windows are sufficiently big) or just use bitmaps :) I also changed the color a little, now it's closer to the color that gas illumination would give.

The Snow Version is a very cool idea.
Unfortuneately the building would stand out very much because all other buildings show their regular appearance. But it's still a very clever idea.
As for the nightlit version: I simply love it.I have a soft spot for nightlight pictures because they often give a lit object a totally different character. Also i love well done nightlights on SC 4 Buildings. It makes a great difference between plain lit window squares or like in this case, where  you actually can see something behind the windows....
However, i love the building and it looks like it's soon on the way to the Lot Editor...

You have 3 options for illumination,

The first one is modeling the interior and lighting with omni lights. It s time rendering consuming but the result is nice.
It s what you have done for the big windows. I like it but the intensity of the lights is not really strong. It s representative of the reality but in game the building could appear extinguished compared to the others buildings.

You can have a similar result by applying a self illumination map to the floors. The advantage of this method is that you can increase the intensity of the lights by either increase the intensity itself in the parameters or increase the contrast of your map.

The last option is what you used for the smaller windows. It has a sense for small building like houses but in your case I think you can go with floor illumination maps.

;)

deora - For now, yes. But I resolved from now on to make snow version for every BAT I make, maybe in time other BATers will start too because it doesn't require much work to do. And it would make winter pictures from game much more attractive :)
Yes, I will export it soon, now I just want to see if I can tweak illumination of small windows according to hints Girafe gave me, thank you for comment! :)

Girafe - Yes, with my previous computer it was pain with first option but now it runs very smoothly and I like the effect :) I didn't want the lights to be too strong, but I can always try to turn up the intensity of omnis :) I will try to make floor maps for the small windows and post it later today.

Hey, a snow version!

If we could get people on board, we could get cities like this:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fjndregan.files.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F03%2Fdscf9605.jpg&hash=e29d3573faa999ec720fa300b143793115b37175)

This happens to be Department 56, which is a holiday novelty set of buildings that you can buy and then create custom layouts to build your own town/city. (which I have at home, though this pic isn't mine)

Not sure what to add about the BAT, except that maybe the nightlights are still a little too strong, but otherwise I really like what you have here.

vester - I will try to do that :) I hope I can find some tutorial on this.

In the model, make special LODs (they can be as thin as you like) that covers what covers the differences to the facade:
Not sure what is the best: to keep the model in place or to move it so the LODs are centered.

Then in the lot editor it is just a matter of placing it in the right place.

The snow is a great idea!! I think it was in project when the game was being developed!!! Only a small detail: I think that in the northern countries the plants are taken to the interior when the winter comes. Perhaps perennial plants are left out, but the others not (or they are not so green, as they are deciduous).

You're doing a great job.  &apls

APSMS - Thanks :) And I certainly had nice snow-covered Victorian city in mind when I was making snow version so I hope I won't be the only one making snow version of BATs :)

vester - Thank you! I will try it as soon as I solve my problem with the model :(

romualdillo - Too bad that they didn't include it :( I was thinking about topiaries too, and you are right. While you don't have choice and you must leave them in garden if they are planted, you should take them inside when they are potted so they won't die from cold. I will delete them before exporting winter version :) Thank you for comment!

The University Club is finished, I exported the day view (several times with different LODs to be exact) but the shadow glitch under the balustrade remains :( Anyone have any idea as how to fix it? :(

I wonder if it would be possible to make the building like a seasonal prop, that changes to snow in the winter?

Obviously this is a very specific application, but it might be worth looking into, even if it's just to show that you can do it.

Great progress on the University Club  &apls

The snow covered version is a great idea. I've enjoyed making snowy areas in SC4 for a long time but our choices for buildings are very limited and this would make a great addition. I would suggest that for the snowy version you cover more areas with snow though--all of the flat roof area, the sloped roof areas by the edge of the building, the green parts of the roof, and perhaps some of the ledges on the sides of the building. I quite like the 4th of July version too. I wish I could help you with the shadow glitch but I lack the expertise and frankly don't notice it. Sorry to say it but...that last picture would look a lot better if you did an HD render of this building  ;D

Great progress so far!  In regards to your shadow issue, I may have a solution. Now, this doesn't always work, but perhaps you could try exporting the model as a few meters underground, then raise it (make sure it is a prop) in lot editor. Additionally, try using very tight LODs.

APSMS - I wanted to make it that way from the beginning and I mostly succeeded :)

Aaron Graham - Thank you :)

noahclem - In the final version there's much more snow on the building :) And while HD render indeed looks nice and you can see more of details that aren't really visible now, the Zoom5 isn't looking very nice :( So I resolved on not exporting the building in HD. Thank you for comment! :)

Bipin - Thank you :) I tried to do what you said but it didn't helped, I was able to minimize the shadow though. It's much less noticeable now I think.

I was quiet those few days while I was finishing the exporting and modding of University Club, everything is done except one thing. There are four timed props, two for "normal" (summer) version (one before and one after 4th of July), one 4th of July and one for winter. Summer version before July is visible by default and is turned off while three other versions appear (they are visible only in their special state). Everything would be great and sweet but the version visible by default for some reason isn't casting shadow. I don't know why because it has the property "is ground model" set on true and there isn't anything like "no shadows". When I set it as always visible (restore RK Type 1) the shadow is OK.

So... can anyone help me? :(

When using RKT4 the game only casts a shadow for the first model it encounters. So my guess is you need to switch the models for special & normal state around. And on a related note, you can actually leave out the invisible model (assuming you're using one) and set the RKT4 with just 8 reps for the visible model.

Thank you for your answer. I did that the first time but I realized that you need to wait for the date of first "change" for building to appear. I can leave it like that but won't it be annoying for players? (And well...not really "nice" solution).

Wow Seraf, the Building looks sweet ingame.Everything works fine and also the several seasonal changes work perfect.
Thank you for putting so much work into this &apls

See,i already placed it at the right corner.Too bad the surrounding buildings are covering it.Maybe if i pretend that one of the newer skyscrapers near the University Club was torn down to make way for a nice green park.... ::)

deora - Thank you, I'm glad you like it :) And I'm used to the fact that my creations are dwarfed/covered by work of other BATers ;)

Girafe - Thank you :) You mean brick as a brick in the back and alley elevations or the stone blocks on the facades? I aimed for the color and brightness of the real materials, that being said, the color of stone on the facade is quite difficult to recreate. It can appear in at least five colors, depending on the time of the day, year or the weather so... :D

Ah what a cool little fountain.Love the yellowish nightlights and the reflections on the water.
Luckily the Manhatan Townhall already exists,so i had to start the little Park which includes the Fountain, the City Hall and that other building (forgot it`s name, something with Tweed.....was it Tweed Court or something?).Sadly the other building doesn`t exist so i used the original Maxis City Hall as a substitude.

QuoteYes, Tweed Courthouse - symbol of corruption in New York City ;) I'm glad you like the fountain, it looks nice in the park you made

Ah right,Tweed Courthouse it was.Oh and thanks but i noticed the fountain was placed on the wrong spot.Instead of having a closer look at the city Hall Park,i just plopped the fountain where Google Maps says "City Hall Park" instead of placing it next to the spot where the park narrows down to a triangle shape....

As for your newest project:Are you a Mindreader?
I ask because while building the City Hall Park and dragging the streets for the surroundings,i thought "Man that would be cool if the Manhattan Municipal Building would exist for SC4".
and now you are already working on it!
Looks really great and with amazing details.I bet this will take a long time until finished,i mean it`s a bis building with lots of tiny bits and bytes (a little funfact from me: few years ago i always thought this is the actual city hall of Manhattan.I mean it looks kinda like a classic City Hall standing on a similar shaped tower, and hey,big cities need big City Hals, right?)
No oubt this will be another fine beauty for SC4.
Have a nice Weekend.

Thank you guys for the comments :) It's been quiet here, those past two months but I will try and update more regularly. I don't have "full" update this time, recently I worked on another part of Municipal Building. I'm not really pleased because it turns out that those details I was working on aren't really visible even on HD render so... it looks I just wasted time :/ But well...

Well, technically you could render it in higher resolution than HD, scaling the building up before rendering and then scaling it back down in Model Tweaker, and that could be viewed in all it's glorious detail in game by going to closer-than-zoom-6 view using the "sizeof" cheat. Wouldn't be likely to get much use but I promise if you do it I'll take a few nice pictures in game ;)  :squirrel:

For what it's worth your work so far looks excellent regardless of zoom or render  &apls

Ok, so, I've been working hard on Hotel Pennsylvania those last few days. Here's how it looks for now:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Faeaa4166d9f9b0d2985c32610c16a3e8.png&hash=ce2d5a97d0c13c522d214bd0d2e9b7222b723693) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/aeaa4166d9f9b0d2985c32610c16a3e8.png)

As you can see modeling is done in about 75%. I have to model buildings on the roof and all the small utility buildings in the lower part of the hotel (not the courts, I finished modeling work in there ;) ). I'm quite happy with textures of brick and stone. I will add (probably) a bit of grime to the stone but that's all.

And as a bonus: HD Render :D

catty - Thank you! :)

FrankU - Thank you :)

belfastsocrates - If you mean my model then the interior is non-existent for this moment  :D

Vizoria - Thank you :) And... well, both :D Depends on how you look at it, the building has only one side "free" but it's so wide that it spans from one side of the city block to another ;) So theoretically you can fin in there another, equally wide building or you can place two smaller :)

romualdillo - Thank you :)

Ok, time for update. I remember saying once to Aaron that this building isn't that complicated. Well, I take it back, the roof itself is as complicated as they get. But I have most of it done, all that's left are skylights and of course the greenhouse.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F61a3aa61c807936062fdee0cb94a00e7.png&hash=84ee2704d3eeddc9722993fdcb65ff2b4cf4013f) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/61a3aa61c807936062fdee0cb94a00e7.png)

Just a few words about textures and roofjunk: I'll probably make the current textures a bit dirty, not much, just to make the building look a few years old. As for the roof - I'm making the version from mid 20's, so the third and forth "arms" of the building will be empty (actually, I'm thinking about making the addition on the third arm but I'm afraid it will obscure view of the greenhouse of the second arm). There weren't any HVAC units back then on the roof.

I'm mostly done with skylights, I only need to model a few things and then I can start working on textures. I'm quite happy with glass material of glasshouse. At first I though I will have to model the interior, but then it turned out that the architects used three types of glass in construction of glasshouse. And the most important one - the one in the roof, was a heavy, ribbed glass. No wonder that on one photo I have it looks nothing like glass, more like solid material  ::)

Now I wonder if they used the same glass in construction of skylights...  ()what()

So, September is a special month, on September 18th, seven years ago I uploaded my first BAT on STEX. It was Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower and at the time I was really proud of it ;) Earlier this year I decided I will finally remodel it, this time in all its Italian Renaissance glory and complete with the building that the Tower was part of. So you can expect some updates on it.

And now, update on Hotel Pennsylvania; working on textures:

Fantastic work wit the roof!!!  &apls But one part of it looks too full and the other looks too plain and empty. Are you going to model the rest of the roofjunk or it's just too modern? Perhaps you can add some skylights or something...
Looking forward for the next update...!!!

Nice work!   The textures suit the building well, and the shape of the structure itself is a break from the ordinary.

romualdillo - Thank you :) And no, this is how the roof looked back in the 1930. Later they added small building on the third arm and made a lot of small changes to the rest of the roof that I don't really like. The fourth arm was empty for a very long time except for the cooling tower (big uninteresting box that didn't really fit there) added sometime between 1940-50. And since it's recreation I don't really want to add anything that wasn't there :)

Simcoug - Thank you :)

Great! So the over part of the roof will be empty like that? No vent units or anything on it?
Would love to see some old posters on those brick walls at the bottom.

Also, when you post a picture, don't use the URL code. Resizing the picture is enough. :)

Looks amazing! The only thing I'd comment on is those little trees look a bit on the cartoon-ish side but at this scale probably doesn't matter too much. I really like the way you've done your glass though

Ps. I'll have to make a mental note of where this thread is located, last time it disappeared off the front page and then I couldn't find it again ()what() )

That's why I asked about the cooling tower... Well, if you don't want to add anything that wasn't there in 1930, perhaps you may want to do something with the texture, like on the other roofs. It still looks too big and clean to me. And you won't be adding anything strange to the building.  ;)

art128 - Thank you, and no :) It was left for the future development and most of the vents are on the upper roof :) I was thinking about the "block" wall, the thing is: it was always "empty" because it faces the department store building that was already there when the construction of the hotel started. But maybe I could put there the name of the hotel as a commercial in the old style? I will think about it :)
And sorry, I was using the code I was given by Casper a few years ago :D I will use the new one from now on :)

reddonquixote - Thank you! And well, at this size I'm afraid I can't really do much with those small trees :D And thank you! I spent some time working on it :)
I have the same problem with some threads :D

carlfatal - Thank you! :)

romualdillo - Thank you :) I added a bit of dirt on the main roof, hope it looks better now ;)

I think the model is finished... time for winter version and Nightlights :)

Great work with the little details there!! They always need too much time for their size, but they really make a difference... without them everything looks too empty and plain. I like the new texture on the last roof. More noise looks better to my eyes... Some kind of "Horror Vacui" of mine...  :D

It looks fantastic!!  &apls

Ok guys, I wanted to show you some WIP but it seems that LD-host is dead and I'm left again without a site for my renders :/ Does anybody know another site? Preferably not photobucket or imageshack...
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: Simcoug on January 13, 2016, 07:23:58 AM
After terrible experience with imageshack, I have found Dropbox very useful.
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: noahclem on January 13, 2016, 08:31:09 AM
That's terrible news if LD-host is gone! I had a similar experience with Majhost and ended up relocating to imgur which so far has worked quite well for me. I'd like to find a more permanent solution though which I think will mean something I pay a small fee for. Am thinking about using Google in the same way Simcoug is referring to using dropbox and getting a subscription. Would definitely consider dropbox but the cheapest plan of $10/month just seems like way too much money--that's the same amount I pay for my broadband!

In any case I'm looking forward to the next development here :)
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: Themistokles on January 13, 2016, 09:09:27 AM
I'm using Google Sites as an image host and that's been working very well. Creating and maintaining one's own site is completely free and in my opinion doesn't take more effort than registering on an imagehost. I'm not aware of any tight volume restrictions, as of yet I've not encountered any problems.

And I should have $%#Ninj2 posted more often here... I'm looking forward to what you have in store!

I'm using Flickr, from Yahoo for a long time. It keeps the maximum image quality, it's very good in my opinion.
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: MushyMushy on January 13, 2016, 02:43:57 PM
I personally have been using imgur ever since I dropped imageshack. Other than it occasionally being down (not the pictures, but access to your account to add more pictures) due to supposedly having too many people online at once, I've had no problems with it for the past 2 years that I've been using it. I'm not actually sure what the limit on the site is - I currently have over 200 images of varying sizes (quite a few PNGs as well) hosted on my free account though.
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: compdude787 on January 13, 2016, 10:40:21 PM
I use Imgur exclusively, but for large mosaics, I post them on Flickr because it doesn't compress them like Imgur does. I briefly used Majhost for the images in one of my MD updates but that didn't last long because Majhost abruptly closed down a few months later and I have since moved them to Imgur.

Thank you so much guys! I'm still considering Flickr but for now I went with DeviantArt since I already have account there.

So, please remember this is still very much WIP, the concourse roof takes quite a bit of time to model and fit all the parts. I'm still thinking if I want to use ribbed glass (the same type that was used in real building) on concourse roof, you can see that with it we won't be able to see what's inside.

What size would this be? Also, how would you want to go about making it a functional station? Would you consider BATing something like this (http://static01.nyt.com/images/2013/05/26/arts/26kimmelman/26kimmelman-articleLarge.jpg) or this (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/Pennstation1910.jpg) to cover the entrance?

Also, how would you want to go about making it a functional station?

One thing you could do is mod it to work with URail, that way you wouldn't need rail lines going in either side.

That looks simply stunning! &apls

I'm sure it'll be fabulous whichever way you decide to connect it to the rail network, but I can't help thinking, that one advantage of making it for the underground rail puzzle pieces like mgb suggested is that it'll then be possible to use also as a standalone building ;)

Gorgeous BAT! This'll be a very grand station.
It could also always be modded as a subway station, yes? If a piece like the one Swordmaster posted an image of was made (which could be transit enabled to convert passenger rail traffic to subway traffic), it would still look like a train station.

Another option is to lot it raised to L1 (7.5 meters) and overhanging one tile all around, so it basically 'sits' on a sized trench that contains the tracks. This could allow to use maxis tunnels to connect the station, and even making connections forward the station, overpassing its terminus condition (just as the Empire Connection will do, linking Penn and Grand Central).

Ok, so first things first. Thank you all for those comments and I'm sorry that it took me over a year to answer them :(

Swordmaster - If I remember correctly Penn Station will be 9x16. As for making it functional... I'm not really sure how to do that (isn't there a right button in PIM?). In real building the tracks were underground so I don't know if I need to bat anything besides station... I would like to just put the station building like any other standard building in the game and then to have all rails underground...I hope I explained this right...  ???

Modeling work on this little gem was finished a long time ago (apart from some minor details) and I decided it's time to finish it, I will post more renders soon.

JP Schriefer - Thank you :)

mattb325 - Thank you :)

romualdillo - Thank you :)

reddonquixote - Thank you :) I'm always happy to go back to bating, over the years it became a hobby  ;)

I'm working on textures now, with this building it was difficult to find right color because in reality it is clad with white marble and we all know that white doesn't look all that great in SC4. But I think I managed to get the color right finally.

Great work.

One small suggestion: Exaggerate the depth of the details around the windows.

I imagine a lot of use for this superb jewelry: court, town hall, museum...... ::)
Enormous class and presence and a reproduction that seems perfect.  &apls &apls &apls

Thanks guys :)

vester - I did exaggerate the depth a bit but I don't think it made any difference. This building however does looks a bit flat in certain light so I'm not that worried about it, there's a lot going on on the facade anyway so... :D

manga rivotra - Yes, and unlike most of my BATs is quite small so it will fit even in smaller city :)

JP Schriefer - Thanks! :)

kelis - Thank you :)

korver - Thank you :)

Ok, so here's finished day view; I should post renders of night and winter views soon.

Its beautiful

I can't work out which building it is though...? I don't think I've ever seen (or noticed) a building where it has beaux-arts features on only 2 sides before. I'm very curious to know what it's butting up against now.

reddonquixote - Thanks :) It's the Appellate Courthouse on the corner of Madison and 25th st. Back in 1900 when it was new there were townhouses on both sides of it. Then in 1954 an addition was built on that rectangular space delimited by old court building. It tried echo the original building but one can easily tell that it wasn't part of the original scheme. On the other side there's a residential building, and not very pretty  $%Grinno$%

So I was preparing the Court for release and when it came to LOTing I was like "what I am gonna do with this rectangular space?". So instead of making a parking lot there, I decided to model two townhouses that stood there. One of them was converted for commercial use around 1910 I think - and that's the version I choose. I still have to finish roofs but apart from that the modeling part is finished.

I know that problem with some empty space. Not really part of the building and yet...

Like your solution with the townhouses.

I like those two townhouses. Perhaps you could include those two as separate props as a bonus. ;)

Good solution! Those gaps are the reason why I create all my buildings as props, so I can fill them with prop families. Doing it this way, I don't have to adapt everything to the grid, conserving the buildings' proportions.

Great solution!  I second the idea to render it as a separate prop too - I know I'd love to use it somewhere

vester - Yeah, I couldn't decide what to do with it  $%Grinno$%

bombardiere - Thanks :)

romualdillo - Those days all my buildings are porps because that's the only way I can include winter versions  :D

Simcoug - Thanks :)

I will of course render it as separate prop, that way i don't have export the courthouse again ;)

They are finished now, I only have to export them and add them to lot with courthouse:

Beautiful work as always! &apls I remember walking by the NY Appellate Court Building working nearby and admiring the architectural gems around Madison Square Park.

Loving those townhomes as well, such a shame they were demolished. Will you be doing a version with the current annex building?

Simmer2 - Thank you :)

korver - Thank you :)

Ehanson - Thank you :) As for the annex...I don't know yet, I'm not a big fan of it and to be honest I would like to move on to some other buildings ;)

Guys...I'm sorry but I'm afraid I will have to export Courthouse and townhouses as a single model, I tried to place them on the same LOT and this is what happens:

I thought that changing the courthouse LODs to "L" shape would help but it didn't and I don't know what else I could do to make this work :(
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: romualdillo on July 19, 2017, 08:45:32 AM
I guess the only way to make that work is adjusting the LOD to the different elements on the roof as much as possible. LOD's texture is an image put directly on its geometry, so everything behind will be rendered as part of the top...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1274.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy437%2Fromualdillo%2F629_zpsizyazkdo.jpg&hash=d85f7502116af6832807d8460db009a4ec60e540)

A bit rough, but that's what the game reads as top texture literally... The wall is part of the texture
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: seraf on July 19, 2017, 10:07:16 AM
I'm afraid the LOD will be too complicated then... doesn't it cause glitches when LODs are too complicated? I think I remember reading something about that...
Title: Re: Seraf's NYBT BATs
Post by: romualdillo on July 19, 2017, 02:26:52 PM
I don't know, but maybe...  Perhaps if you make the main LOD just the same height of the perimeter walls and two or three boxes for the big chimney and the two sheds, you can solve it withou doing a too complicated lod... You don't need to make special forms for the other chimneys or the skylight as they don't stand out of the building... Even the statues may not need anything special if the main LOD includes the outer ballustrade at street level...  :-\

Great work. I don't see a need to render as separate props, they all look great together, why bother?  $%Grinno$%

Am I seeing blurry outputs though? I have noticed blurriness on my most recent exports as well, and have tried increasing the sample size. Its a bit of a shame because the original renders were so nice and crisp - but its not enough to bother re-doing..

Thanks reddon :) I just thought that since those were separate buildings I would render them as two separate BATs ;) The image above was blurred probably because it was a preview from LOT editor, the rendered building in game looks ok :)

RL is keeping me busy but I managed to get some work done on Pennsylvania Station, I had to re-model some objects because when I opened up the scene after a long break I was like - "what a mess..." (I'm sure some BATers know what I'm talking about  $%Grinno$% ). Anyway, the modeling is mostly done, apart from concourse roof, and I started working on textures - I think I will desaturate them to make them more whitish instead of beige. I'm not entirely sure about the hue of flat roofs too (maybe I should make them more black than brown?).

No need to change the brown roof color. Just make it a bit darker.

Your classic Penn Station looks mindblowing.
The funny Thing is that some small Elements of the old Penn Station still survived today and can be seen with an open Eye and an open Mind.
Keep those marvelous BATs coming.

I can't believe it been 7 months since I last posted here  :o Well, my only excuse guys is that studies take a lot of my time...

Thank you for your comments;

A. Gates - Thank you, If I remember correctly - 16x9.

reddonquixote - Thank you! Sometimes it seems to me that I'm spending more time on looking at photos trying to figure out how this and this part of the building looked like than actually modeling it  :D

deora - Tell me about it, I promised myself that once semester ends I will work more on my BATs  :D

Ok, so... I'm still working on Penn Station, namely - on the concourse roof. But I also wanted to finish some of my older BATs (don't even ask how many of them are there...) because working on such a big BAT...well, it gets monotonous. So here it is, I started it in ... 2015 I think? It still needs materials but apart from small fixes the modeling part is done:
