Welcome to THE REAL AUSTRALIA,

I was relatively new to the MD concept, but after trawling through many, many pages of excellent work I decided "this can't be too hard..."... Also, I while I was looking at the MD's I decided one of two things: recreations seemed hard, the American and European styles were a bit overused and there wasn't a true blue Australian MD...

Anyway, an introduction to me: I'm a born and breed, fair dinkum Aussie. I have kangaroo's in my backyard, yes, I am the genuine article :P... I live in the Mackay district (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackay,_Queensland) on the Central Queensland coast, so this means that I will be showcasing the Subtropics of the central coast... with some Arid and tropical updates.

So to this end, I have decided to showcase my exploits in the Aussie style, whether it be on our highways, farms or towns. I will try to visit every aspect of my region. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Queensland)

anyway, on with the show: Update One, the Plains Road:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg41.imageshack.us%2Fimg41%2F9996%2Fvalleyoverview.jpg&hash=71d1d348a525285425fc21ff630eff62e809c1a6)
now, this is an overview of a steep valley, now with the flora you may be thinking "geez, there's no undergrowth there", to tell the truth, in many parts there are two layer of Flora: Gums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gum_tree) and Grass.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg15.imageshack.us%2Fimg15%2F6030%2Fsharpbend.jpg&hash=90efc9c31bf0211564da640982be19584774f368)
A fairly sharp bend, not too bad, but as usual, Main Roads (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Main_Roads_(Queensland)) forgot to put those handy directional arrow signs beside the road... (or they don't exist in SimCity!  $%Grinno$%)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.imageshack.us%2Fimg34%2F3111%2Froadintotown2.jpg&hash=69f94f542a6f2c279eb44b8e679d32aed57aabf0)
Now that we've gotten around 'Dead Mans bend' (it's traditional to name Australian landmarks like that, god only knows why!) we're around a gentler more overgrown piece of the road...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F8799%2Fthejunction.jpg&hash=a851b7ee0b4b3391881683779ba1bd5ea0b5e306)
The junction that takes us out to the Coalfields of the Bowen Basin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowen_Basin)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg39.imageshack.us%2Fimg39%2F9891%2Frowantown.jpg&hash=3daf2d9b5c5faa2f2356ed937f50f83752795252)
Now, anyone who's been out on the Highway 70 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_Downs_Highway) would've seen at least one of these towns, cleverly designed to have every house the exact same, now I've lived in one of these communities, not fun. These little towns a put up everywhere as accommodation for the Mine Workers and their families... (yeah, TP-ing trees is about the only thing to do in these places  :P)

Good start, adroman! I've never been to Aussie Land, but every picture of it I've ever seen shows some of the prettiest scenery imaginable. It will be interesting to see it through your eyes!

And those goofy-looking little houses do sprout up like weeds, don't they! ;)

Replies? Already?

Luke09 ~ Thanks man! Those trees are (as Alex (driftmaster) said) available on the LEX here (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=167); I surely will keep up my work! (when school permitts!) Please, come and comment anytime, my friend.

Driftmaster07 ~ Thanks for answering Luke's question my friend. It's wonderful having you here!

Joel (Joelyboy911) ~ Ah, I was wondering when I'd see you, Mr. Potter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ollivander#Mr_Ollivander) Joel... Thanks for your wonderful comment! the Wiki links were a last second touch, I was going to leave people hanging, but, nah I decided more authenticity'd be better. again, I will try to keep it up! (P.S. Thanks for that model! ;D)

Bobbi ~ Thank-you my friend, I will try and keep up the work! Those pictures don't really do Jeronij's trees justice, they are the mother of all (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_mother_of_all) SC4 trees!

Joan (Jmouse) ~ Thanks-a-million. yes, our scenery is nice; I'll try and make it as good in SC4 as it is in real life... Yes, I orginally wanted that area for some big houses that Matt (http://www.google.com/cse?cx=partner-pub-1378940987028293:wyjdrk-l6zg&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=mattb325&sa=Search) recently released, but I loved them so much I bent the storyline to fit  :P. It's an honour having you comment here!

Finally
Would you guys like to continue along the highway into a town? Or go down for a beach holiday?

All comments are very much appreciated!

Havva good one,
Adrian

Beaches? They're a bit controversial at the moment... so I'd say lets do that! :P

You're gonna do great with this MD, Its a totally new concept. Good luck for the voyage going ahead!

I know, two post in 20minutes,

but I'll drag y'all away from the pretty scenic pictures that I've been showing to a project that Joel (joelyboy911) and I have been cooking up...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F8518%2Fpreviewone.jpg&hash=a96d29c81f57ee422a7be362b6ad2dd7b7ec3a51)

Beaches it is then!

Until next time,

Replies again? This guy must be desperate!

I'm not really desperate, but I'd like to build up something of a following...

Joel (Joelyboy911) ~ Controversial? whatever could you be referring to? (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8641.msg280627#msg280627) And thanks, I hope we have some calm seas, and lovely winds...

Thomas Neto (Thomas, I assume?) ~ Thanks for your encouragement! I was hoping to start well, after all "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confucious)"...

Alex (Driftmaster07) ~ It's my pleasure, I hope you'll keep coming back. Thanks for that comment about the Supermarket, Joel helped a lot, mainly cause I'm useless with texturing  :P.

Luke09 (Luke, I assume?) ~ Yeah, Joel and I have been collaborating since this faithful reply (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8641.msg280322#msg280322). and for the link, No Worries! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_worries)

Anyway, now that I've wasted an afternoon embedding links :P, I think it's time for a brief update, a teaser if you will...

"Hey, who's the new guy?"

Anyway, I'm doing a bit of LOT-ing for the Beach update,

Havva good one.

it is possible to you to make a logo to put in the front of the supermarket?its because its looking so "blank" in the front...but i liked the building  :)

Hey Luke09. Me and adroman are working on that supermarket together, and I can tell you that the one he showed there is not a final product. There will of course be signs out the front.

Hi Adrian! Always good to see players include their own BATs and lots in their MDs. IMO, creating the structure is easy compared to getting the texture to look right. &mmm All too often, a building ends up looking too new and too clean. Just takes work and experience to get the hang of it, and I still need a lot more work and experience!

Looking forward to seeing more of Australia...
Joan

Thomas Neto ~  :D, glad you liked it!

Bobbi ~ Thanks man!  :D

Battlecat ~ Thank you for your comment! I spent hours on that terrain, but only now am I showing it to the world. I hope I've captured them well, they're unedited images from the Game.

Luke09 ~ Yes, thanks for your comment, but as Joel said, that's only an alpha render... Joel and I will add the logos and better textures as we go.

Joel (joelyboy911) ~ Thanks for defending my beaches (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8641.msg280909#msg280909), sorry, our supermarket! But yes, we will get some better textures and signs!

WC_EEND ~ Oi! you there!  :P I rarely say it myself, but many of my peers do. Thanks, I'm really trying to make this authentic! Don't worry, my fingers are crossed!

Driftmaster07 ~ Thanks for you input, but Joel and I have a fair bit of work to do before a release! Thanks again.

Luke09 ~ PAGE TWO!

Joan (JMouse) ~ Thanks for your comments! I enjoy looking at people's BAT's too, seeing them in their Native habitat is awesome, in my opinion. Joel and I have a long way to go on the Supermarket yet, so stay tuned!

It's my birthday, but you get the presents!  $%Grinno$%

Introducing Update Number Two, on Page Number Two, THE REAL AUSTRALIA: SUN, SURF AND SAND
As Requested by Joel!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F3586%2Froadtothecoast.jpg&hash=d74512e2a0ecfe581edd295ae636da8e84517e8a)
The road to the coast, after passing through the cane growing regions so common in our part of the world... PROTIP: Did you know that the Mackay Region grows roughly 1/3 of Australia's total Sugar production?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F1408%2Fbeachtothehills.jpg&hash=17acb096533deadb0a68a5028ebbd2361e62a02f)
The beach line receding into the hills. This is caused by the way Australia's coast line a long, long, LONG time ago was lined with Volcanoes, when the water rose and flooded the valleys making for excellent Deep Water Harbours!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F7446%2Fboatramp.jpg&hash=5e67522b7810ba074e3b5cd781093eba2cc27d0a)
Familiar? It was my entry in the Picture contest. - This little shot shows a Boat Ramp that sees most of it's action during the Holidays, so it's a little quiet this time of year... Anyway, this is a remote coastline!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F1112%2Flittleislandone.jpg&hash=43f781cc330c0034f73d65148b6584dad7115e85)
A little island in the Coral Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral_Sea)... PROTIP: These islands are sparsely populated and there are thousands in the Great Barrier Reef.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg33.imageshack.us%2Fimg33%2F4937%2Fbeachhouses.jpg&hash=5467160cf7987a361143de9ac19c3ccd527c2065)
A couple of beach houses that are strangely full for this time of the year. but then again, the Golden Oldies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Oldies) don't follow school holidays do they?  :P
Final note: Ignore the texture on the end two lots, the transparency system still has a few kinks!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F3331%2Fshipahoy.jpg&hash=d8fb355b27cdde92e967b60ad9570a41674dcee4)
Now, let's keep a safe distance and not do a Jessica Watson! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Watson)... (this should give an indication as to what our next updates will be headed toward!)

As usual: Last Word
I hope you enjoyed this update! But, no offence take these beaches with a pinch of salt, these are not exact, and our beaches tend to go on forever, with plain sand!

Havva good one,

Ooh, very interesting. Nice of you to link to my MD too. :P

I see you like the bamboo included in one of Jeronij's packs. I have it too. But peg's newest flora mod on the STEX looks interesting also.

Nice beach houses also.

I hope you show some sugar cane plantations soon as well (I suppose you could say the same to me about my dairy farms...).

Beaches look really good, Adrian. And I love Matt325's houses - I have every one of them in my plugins.

Hope we get to see more of Australia's lovely seaside scenes ala adroman. ;D IMO, beaches are the one of the most difficult elements to use and make it look right, so it will be interesting to see where you go with this thread .

Well guys, a day has past since my update, and I thought I'd keep replying as much as possible!

Joel (Joelyboy911) ~ Thank you my friend! it's my pleasure, you're MD's something of a legend, in my opinion... Yes, the Bamboo is very, very nice... I quite liked it in your MD, so I tried it myself and fell for the look. PEG's flora looks okay, but I never really liked it that much, I'll try and combine it with the next updates. I did the beach houses months ago, but never used them for anything major until now. Yes, let's just say my next update will be very sweet... thanks for the birthday wishes!

Thomas Neato ~ Thanks man, I slaved for hours over them beaches! Glad you liked them...

Earth quake ~ Thanks, I found, in my humble opinion, my talent when I tried the LOT Editor... Thanks, them Beach houses were a last minute thing too...

Bobbi ~ Thanks-a-million! I quite like how the beaches turned out too!

Luke09 ~ the Trails are apart of the Rural Renewal Project that's avaliable on the LEX... I'll enquire into that Boat ramp for you, I believe it was made by Chrisadams3997. I'll have your answer in the next update!

djvandrake ~ Thank-you my friend! I liked the look of the coral too,io but it took a while to make it look right!

Battlecat ~ Classy eh? Thanks man, your comments mean heaps!

Driftmaster07 ~ Thanks, it took a long time to get that tile set up right... A very long time, I think it's paid off though  ()stsfd()

io_bg ~ Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! The shore took a while to do right, but I think in the end, it worked out well...

Joan (Jmouse) ~ You're becoming a staple of my replies  :D, but thank-you for your comments, Matt's houses work well for me too! Beaches are very difficult to capture... I have a few ideas for the future in mind...

Last word
I have two options for you:
(a) Continue up the coast to a river inlet
(b) trek back to the road, follow it into my canefields
It's up to the first person to reply!

Also, would anyone like to do a train skin mod for me?  ;D

Adrian, sorry I was a bit late in dropping by, but you are doing a great job so far

I must say you haven't set yourself an easy task. Your selection of props and fauna fit in very well and I'll be interested to see how this progresses.

QuoteIt's up to the first person to reply!

Let's check out the canefields ;)

Beautiful, beautiful natural landscapes.

If this is the real Australia, then I am packing my bags and buying a one-way ticket.

Your representation of Australia is wonderful, and I can't wait for more.

G'Day,

This has not been a pleasent week for many in the SimCity 4 Devotion community... I'd like to start out by saying that the two greatest inspirations for this MD were firstly the Thames District by Joelyboy911 and Dedgren's 3RR (many of the Custom Content shown in my MD is from 3RR)... now, I'm dedicating today's mini update to the Edgren family who are grieving the loss of their father, outlined here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=112.msg282126#msg282126)... Also, I'm dedicating this particular LOT/BAT I made to the Trans Australia Airlines Flight 538 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Australia_Airlines_Flight_538) victims, this crash, the worst in Australian history happened off the coast of my Hometown, and I thought it'd be appropriate to pay tribute to the lost souls... recent and past...

Here it is:

Guillaume (Scirius) ~ Why thank you my friend! Please, drop by anytime!

Nexis4Jersey ~ I'm sorry, what do you mean by "needs more textures"? and thanks mate!

Ethan (Ecoba) ~ Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't claim our natural beauty as my own, but I can share it with the world in my own way! You're always welcome in North Queensland! Stick around, I have more coming!

danielcote ~ Thanks you for your warm comments! I hope you continue your visits!

Now, my friends, the proper update  will be sometime this week, maybe Wednesday or Thursday... It'll have my Custom Cane Farms in it... So, check  in regularly!

Those beaches (a lot of) posts back are well crafted, and it's nice of you to do the dedications.  Though, the BAT begs the questions, is that based off the real wreckage, and is it still there?  Though, I think I know the answer to the second one.

I guess you have to have replies if you have an update!

Bobbi ~ You're become quite the regular! Thanks for your comments...

sumwonyuno ~ Thank you, my friend... I take a lot of care on my beaches... ah yes, my B.A.T, I do believe the wreckage is still out on the reef, though I haven't seen it myself, the local fisherman rave about it. I was talking to Joel about it when I made it, and I was under the impression it was a DC-3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC-3), but in actual fact it was a Fokker Friendship  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_Friendship)... Quite sad really, a lot of heartbreak in that accident.

Thomas Neto ~ Thanks a million, my friend!

pilotdaryl ~ Heh, once I get an idea in my head... Thanks my Friend! yes, the pictures are unaltered originals, every one of them! PROTIP: Come back anytime you like!

Nexis4Jersey ~ Ah yes, the Supermarket, Joel and I still have a while to go with that... thanks for the comment!

Anyway, on with the Update!

I think I feel a song coming on...

... Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.

The block is awkward - it faces west,
With long diagonals, sloping too.
And in the distance, through the heat haze,
In convoys of silence the cattle graze.
That certain texture, that certain beat,
Brings forth the night time heat.

Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think that this is Australia.

To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
Brings forth the heavy days,
Brings forth the night time sweat
Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia ...

Entering a town, sorta like that of Mackay, but not quite the same...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg5.imageshack.us%2Fimg5%2F241%2Fsuburbsone.jpg&hash=91f3b3fb1df245b6169917bfb1a86963ff45140e)
A shot of the town's southern suburbs...
It's always mystified me why we choose European and American flora for our backyards when our natives are beautiful...
You also see in that picture a representation of the way older suburbs were "beautified" by planting big trees everywhere, but when the Summer Storms and Tropical Storms (aka Cyclones) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone) these trees'll come through your roof at a great rate of knots... As happened in Innisfail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innisfail,_Queensland) when Cyclone Larry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Larry) passed through... Great tragedy, luckily, only one life was lost...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg30.imageshack.us%2Fimg30%2F9375%2Findustrialgiant.jpg&hash=d0cec526a01b518e0866034fd34a86d98b650b0d)
Ah, my favourite, 1930's Factories... now, a bit of History... When the Great Depression hit Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression_in_Australia) the Premier of our Great State, William Forgan Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Forgan_Smith) (a Mackay-ite, I might add :P) embarked on perhaps the greatest Public Works wave in Queensland History, he built bridges, harbours, Universities and so on... and Factories... Now, at the outbreak of World War II Australia massively increased armed production, now, when this happened scores of factories were coverted and built for making the equipment for the Armed Forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_military)... Anyway, that said, many of these factories are either still operating, or, more likely, in ruins... this particular town, however has kept it's factories alive.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg30.imageshack.us%2Fimg30%2F1038%2Froadthroughthecane.jpg&hash=d5da6675c326d08376d1bddcc09950e14ef60701)
Now, many roads through the cane fields are elevated, a) because the farms are built on Flood Plains, b) when they burn the cane (as apart of the harvesting process) the fire can interrupt traffic flow...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg5.imageshack.us%2Fimg5%2F1738%2Fsugarfieldsforever.jpg&hash=1ec505efd219950465a061d6338b550702a64042)
A headland (farming Lingo, I have no idea why tracks are called that) through the endless Cane Fields...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg41.imageshack.us%2Fimg41%2F9589%2Fwindmillandtractor.jpg&hash=0b976e3dfd6e15334b42450d8c1062623214561b)
A tractor parked up for the while... near a Windmill...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg30.imageshack.us%2Fimg30%2F6764%2Ftramwaysiding.jpg&hash=5785d4d91da6195cc0e27e179dc37279cc56d22d)
Now, to get the Sugar from the field to the Mill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugarcane#Processing) the cut cane is put onto a special tramway that run throughout cane farming districts... here's one such siding... (I know, it's STR, but that's the best thing for the job...)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg5.imageshack.us%2Fimg5%2F3051%2Fcanetocows.jpg&hash=b8f95f250102643bc466e4ce29be8c991a7fd120)
Now, some Cane Farmers also branch into Cattle to run on the wastelands of their properties... It hasn't rained here for MONTHS, so the grass is very brown at the moment... (Looks like someone left the gate open...)

Alright, that concludes today's update, I hope to get another mini-update in before the end of the week...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F_zu-DKjmLnoA%2FRtH7wa3voXI%2FAAAAAAAABEg%2FKeD6lbVt4IE%2Fs400%2Fchicken%2Brun%2Bmotorcycle.jpg&hash=05325adf08bf51dbad029ef015724213eca3d05b)

Oh, I thought it would have been taken out of the water by now.  From your picture, it seems like it's completely submerged, so it probably has turned into some sort of artificial reef.

For your latest pictures, the industrial area is well done and organized (none of that filler lots everywhere).  Heh, some kids have TP'ed (toilet paper-ed) two of the tall trees.

It's that time again!

Battlecat ~ Thank you, my friend... I'm glad you like the tracks, they took a while to get looking right. Funny you should mention my suburbs, they took me ages to perfect! Thanks for commenting...

Luke09 ~ I'm sorry, you must of made a mistake, it's called a Servo! And thank you, I think the fields and that industrial park look good too, personally... Come back soon!

djvandrake ~ Thanks! I really liked how they turned out too... Come back again soon!

sumwonyuno ~ No, it's actually in a rather tricky spot in real life, and the thing'd be impossible to raise now... the accident was decades ago; yes it's now a reef of sorts, a popular fishing spot I believe :P... Ah, my industrial area... yes, I never really liked any fillers, so I just design the place  to have no gaps... Yeah, pesky kids, but TP-ing is a serious crime in a peaceful town like ours!

Bobbi ~ Thank you my friend, I appreciate your comments!

Joelyboy911 ~ Thanks mate! I think you need to lengthen your replies! ... Just kidding..

GrindPepper ~ A local, eh? Nice to see you here, mate... I was thinking of doing the Whit. Islands, maybe Hamo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_Island_(Queensland)) or Daydream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_Island_(Queensland)) (my favourites :P)

976 ~ Thanks, my friend!

Earth quake ~ Thank-you! yes, my fields are my pride and joy... (to an extent :P)... Perfect timing too... I was just about to hit "Post" when you commented...

Anyways, I've got a lot to do in real life at the moment, so I'll update either this weekend or early next week!

ha ha there's some great liners in your post. I went up to visit a friend of mine in mackay and there's so many things there that I was amazed about...different flora, smells, fields, warm weather and beaches...and the marina at mackay - that breakwall is awesome!  Being a farmer's daughter in vic, seeing the cane fields from the air flying into mackay was totally unexpected. no fences, just metres high of cane fields stretching forever with little train tracks running in between or parallel to the road & fields to the cane mills!

my friend took me up to yungala? i know i didn't spell it right (please correct me!) but it took an hr or 2 to get up there and it was just cane field after another. the view from the top of the ranges was so good - i took pics because it was so green...grins.

great work so far! brings back a lot of fun memories, keep it up!

@ Newsimaddict: Glad we've another visitor to Mackay on here  ;D yes, Eungella... Trust me, you've only experienced the tip of our iceberg! it's a wonderful place to live... I was actually thinking about Modeling our harbor, with the Sugar Terminal and all... Yes, our Cane Fields are quite a site in the summer months, but in crushing season you can see forever over the plains... magical really. The Cane Tramways were one thing I wanted to do for my update, but I'll have to settle with the STR. The Mills are another thing I'd love to BAT, but I have other commitments (*sigh*)...

As I've said ...These jokes are for my sanity, not your enjoyment... I guess if you find them funny, more the merrier!  $%Grinno$%

Thanks, I really hope you return!

g'day fellow Australian,
nice work in general with your posts, some great attention to detail. I was impressed with the tracks extending out from the cane fields. I'm a long term player but am brand new to lotting. I'm originally from Mclaren Vale, which is a wine region in SA, and I've created some good looking vine rows in the LE. I found an overlay tyre mark texture that's almost right but not. Yours won't work for mine because I need two sets of tyre tracks per square. Any advice on where to look for, or how to go about creating/modifying for such a result? Any help appreciated,
cheers

Joel (Joelyboy911) ~ First reply, as usual... (I don't know why :P), thanks, my friend... Those planes? heh your planes look amazing! Come back soon...

Thomas Neto ~ Ah, thanks my friend!

thingfishs ~ G'day, thanks for your interest, to tell you the truth, the tracks are from the RRP (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1888), I simply put some textures underneath them... the Sugar Fields are SimGoober's, and I relotted them, again. and for that, it might be easier to make your own textures... I'll find you a tutorial and PM you a link... and if you really want, I'll have some free time this week, I'll give it a burl myself... Come back soon!

Bobbi ~ It took a while to make, but I'm happy with the result, I'm glad you are too!

Luke09 ~ Ah, the region... heh... it's not finished yet... or anywhere near finished... but I'll show you it when it's done. and I'll get a picture of the airport shortly... Thanks for the comment!

I detailed my problem here http://simpeg.com/forum/index.php?topic=8041.0
but I can't say I'm convinced that it'll be too hard to learn (as the first response there suggested). The actual placement/spacing of the tracks is crucial for my lot to work, and I suspect I'll have to learn to make/modify my own. Thanks for the link, and please pm me any info you might come across. If, however you take it upon yourself to have a crack, who am I to stop you?  ;)

@ thingfishs... I these links, you'd be interested: Textures - Base and Overlay (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9.0) and SC4Tool (http://kurier.simcityplaza.de/details.php?file=315)

I'll have a go this week, but if you figure it out yourself, that's aces with me!

Ermm... also guys, I'm going to start using the map of Mackay that was recently released on the STEX, so I'll have that region shot soon!

thanks for the links, I'm making progress, and hitting a few brick walls. I've learnt to extract, modify, repackage and rename the texture, (although I'm still waiting for my official range) but it's still not showing up in the LE, nonetheless it's remarkable progress considering. (lucky I didn't listen to the guy at simpeg ;))
I suspect it's still not going to look quite right but I'm happy to be getting my head around this stuff.

By the gods, is it that time again?

Anyway, only one reply, so is it really worth a banner? ...Adrian, stop being so lazy!... ...Yes, mum!...

I'll have one later, mmmkay?

thingfishs ~ Sounds great! I seen your progress at SimPeg....

Anyway, on with the update:

Well, I finally got around to getting myself a proper map (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=22724) (an excellent map, at that)... as opposed to my previous style of opening a new tile, building, pictures, and leaving...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg18.imageshack.us%2Fimg18%2F8084%2Fregionv.jpg&hash=3344645ea929449523f2aa238569db52fc340fb9)

Awesome, eh? It's virgin land, for the moment, I'll be back later this week for more pictures...

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Appropriate, eh?

Anyway that said... or sung ... I have reached a crossroads in this MD: I have started a new region. I have decided to start to do a rough Recreation, I will be using my own custom BATs and LOTs to make this more authentic.
Change is a wonderful thing, but I think I'll stick with my current style of Pop Culture references, Wikipedia Links, etc.

Now, should we start with the replies?... Nah, they can wait...  :P

emgmod ~ Thanks man, I will try to stick to the city as much as possible...

sumwonyuno ~ Thanks my friend, it's actually dobdriver's map...

dobdriver ~ Thanks my friend! I sure will, I may/may not have done the same thing myself  :P Yes it is a nice map, your nice map! Pop in anytime!

Ethan (ecoba) ~  No, you haven't, it great to see you here though  ;)... Thanks for your praise, and I do hope to see you around here, (lurking or otherwise  ::))

Battlecat ~ Thanks man, it's a great map, I hope to be able to capture our city for you guys! Come again soon...

Update now? ...About time!...

Alrighty then... Today I'll be showing two islands off our coast... creatively named "Flat Top" and "Round Top", if I'll get a picture of them next time I'm at the beach...

Anyway, Round Top island has alot of history, such as being the repeater station for the old Telegraph wires, and was famously used in the 1918 cyclone (http://www.mackayhistory.org/research/history/14_1918_cyclone.html) to contact Brisbane...

An overview of the island...

A final shot of the island

Now, Flat Top's less interesting...

Just a regular old island, popular fishing spot, though!

A final picture of the island, showing the tip of the island...

Anyway, I hope that you've enjoyed the first instalment of the new The Real Australia... tell me what you think!

As always, havva good one...

It's a good utilisation of the Jeronji Tree.

Perhaps a way towards the beach would be recommended.

Hey, great use of my plane  :D

Although, I think that picture would be 100% if we could see the shadow of the plane somewhere on the ground. I'm aware that it could be off the screen, as I don't know how high the plane is - but thats the point, we can't tell how high it is.

Anyway the rest of its looking good, well done.  &apls

Well guys, you've astounded me...  ;)

The Real Australia: The Best Seller... has a nice ring to it, doesn't it  :P

Now, Classics before Christmas  ::) ...When pigs fly, eh?...

Now, some statistics:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg691.imageshack.us%2Fimg691%2F5044%2Fgraphqs.jpg&hash=176e261d5c7f1d8d50b8e0ece2653607edaa851e)
This graph shows anyone who has posted twice or more.

I'd like to start today's update by saying a heartfelt thank you to all those who posted!
Now that we've reached this mile stone, let's look back at the history of The Real Australia.

October 01, 2007....... The date that I registered at this wonderful site.
July 11, 2009............. My first post (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=83.msg258476#msg258476)
July-September.......... Mostly lurking, but viewing many MD's and projects around the joint
September 30, 2009.... I opened my Lot Editor thread, where I begun showing some of my aircraft lots
October 01, 2009........ I receive a Personal Message from my now Partner in Crime, Joelyboy911 about my nomination for SCAG (Coincidently, two years after I registered!)
October of 2009......... Many discussions with Joel about MDing
October 17, 2009....... The original The Real Australia Region was opened
October 19, 2009....... The Real Australia was born, straight out of the woodwork
November 04, 2009.... The Real Australia moved into Part 2, the quasi-recreation of Mackay
November 09, 2009.... Comment #100 made by Joelyboy911. Best Sellers... Ohhh yeeaaahhhh!
The Future?.............. It is up to you guys  ;) Tell me what you like, and what you don't!

To all, it's been a great ride, and hopefully the trip isn't over yet... Your comments make it all worthwhile. Remember, if you've lurked here, please I implore you to comment, the community is a fantastically supportive one, and you have to be in it to know it!

Also, a few weeks back at our school assembly our Deputy Principal was discussing the idea of getting involved in school functions, he used a particularly good metaphor; I'm going to apply it here...

There are two types of people in The Real Australia:
Locals and Tourists.

Locals get involved, they know what is happening and who is around, they can tell you everything about The Real Australia... They're the valued, trusted locals who are a staple of the MD.

Tourists are the opposite, they look through what there is... and pass on by.

I implore you, my friends, get involved! Post, comment, critise... whatever you want to say, it's all welcome here. This may only have #101 Comments and 2091 Views, but think, that's at the most 1990 visitors who didn't let themselves be heard!

Luke09, Driftmaster07, Joelyboy911, Bobbi, Jmouse, Thomas neto, Battlecat, Earth quake, djvandrake, Sciurus, Nexis4Jersey, ecoba, danielcote, sumwonyuno, thingfishs, dobdriver....

These guys are the locals, Are you a tourist, or a local?

I'm going to leave with a quote:
"In twenty years from now you will be more dissapointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.
"

As I always say:
Havva good one, but this time I mean it, you guys made my day!

Adrian.

Well guys, it's time that I dusted off the cobwebs and fired up SC4 again...

Anyway, I'm not going to do individual replies this time, instead a massive Thank you! to all those who have congratulated me on the Best Sellers induction.  Many thanks, actually!

Now, I've been in the middle of Exams at school, so study, study... However, I managed 15mins of SC4 time today, and took a few shots:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F6309%2Festuary.jpg&hash=07dd2658f17e85ba89cea64856d0fd472a7f0d8f)
A part of the Pioneer River, closer to the Ocean (which is actually a sea, the Coral Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral_Sea))
I'm not exactly overjoyed with this shot, it defiantly needs some work.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F5761%2Fbridgemp.jpg&hash=bbfd7c21ce58098bdb01e020f3628c34ebfa5f43)
A semi-recreation of the John Cook Bridge (keep that name in mind, you'll be hearing a bit about it later)... It looks alright, in my opinion.

Now,
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F6039%2Ftobecontinuedr.jpg&hash=8e954278c87879b1334a9e3f9201f900ca4b4365)
To be continued, this is no where near finished...

I'll have a fair bit next week, as I have "Study Leave", which is more like "SimCity Leave" for me...

Anyway, to compliment this MD I'm doing a bit of "recreative" BATting in my new team, Team Downunder (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=379.0)... so, I guess you could call that the Workshop, and this office.  ::)

Again, all comments are welcome!

Havva good one,

REPLIES

Earth quake ~ Thanks, my friend, you should see it in real life...  ;)

Driftmaster07 ~ Thanks for your comment... I'm sorry, but the Battle of Midway happened a fair way off Mackay... and I'm trying to avoid anything to ...errr... political, otherwise I would   ::)... I'll see you around, my friend.

danielcote ~ Yes, that shot's on the back burner right now, but I will finish it for y'all... Thanks for your comment, mate.

Sciurus ~ heh, yes, it is rather... I'll have a completed shot soon... I promise. Hope to see you around

dobdriver ~ They're made by Goldiva, avaliable here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=13067)... Perhaps another list item? ... I'm not able to mod them right now, but I was considering a Tree set in the future. Thanks for your comment, I'll see you on the board,  (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=378.0)eh?

thingfishs ~ Another Team member, eh? Thanks for answering Dobdriver's question, hope to see you around here again!

Bobbi ~ Thanks my friend.

Battlecat ~ Yes, thanks my friend. I do agree, the waterfront is become somewhat tiresome, I'll be moving onto some...other things... in the next few updates.

Tomas Neto ~ Thanks, hope to see you back here soon  ;)

kbieniu7 ~ heh, thanks my friend... I hope to have a bigger update very soon!

ecoba ~ Thank you, thank you, thank you! I hope I don't dissapoint... and I thought that Bridge looked pretty good myself, just quietly.

Something of an Update

Sorry guys, but I ...err... have been working on some Top Secret things with SCAG and Team Downunder, which is why I haven't had much SC4 time of the late.

I might do a Spin off update in the future of somewhere other than Mackay, I was thinking something with the Railways. It might even end up in Mackay... You never know...

I'll have it by Monday next week. You have my word.

Havva good one,
Adrian.

EDIT: What about just one little picture?

Joel ~ Nice to see you around here again, my friend...

Battlecat ~ Thanks, I agree... more boats are needed.

Silur ~ It's actually a Tug boat, but I'm sure it'd suit your purposes as well  ;)

Driftmaster07 ~ Ah, it will be just a prop, the Model is too high quality to be a replacement. Come again soon!

sumwonyuno ~ Thanks, I am too  :P I haven't had the time to do much BATing recently, I'll get back to it after a ...Secret Project... which you will see here shortly.

Bobbi ~ Thanks Bobbi! Come again soon... which I know you will...  :P

Sorry for the lack of ...err... quality here in the last few weeks, School has been piling up... and, unfortunately, something had to give... and it just happened to be SimCity  ::)... But, I'm back now, and we return to The Real Australia.

Balnagown is a locale about 15 minutes from the Mackay CBD... It's an area covered in Cane Fields with only a few residents living in the Country side. The area borders the Bruce Highway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Highway) to the North, Pioneer River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_River) to the South. Balnagown was settled by John Cook and his wife in 1862, he was the second settler in the region, the first being John Mackay. Balnagown was born a cattle station, but lives today as Cane Country.

Now to the images!

A Cane Farm with a Cow Paddock in the middle, looks like a mixed herd...

Down to a Sugar Tramway siding... a bit of Basic Lotting here... Here they load the sugar onto Trams that carry it to the Sugar Mills, probably Farleigh Mill (http://www.mackayhistory.org/research/sugar_mills/farleigh.html) since it's on the North side of the River.
In hindsight, that grass doesn't look that great  &mmm

The Farm House... you might notice that it's also a beach house from an earlier date, but it suited the purpose... waste not, want not, eh?... Another cow paddock here. As you may recall, Cane farmers often graze cattle on land that isn't suited to Cane crops.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg682.imageshack.us%2Fimg682%2F2030%2Fbendintheroad.jpg&hash=b5e2eda6051c9f0adad4d9accd8017f38501e6ca)
A bend in the Maraju-Yakapari Road... which links the back of Mackay to the Seaforth turn off... something we'll visit later on.

The Maraju-Yakapari Road has a fair few tight bends and unusual curves in it.

The beginning (or end) of a Creek that flows through the area...it seems the Creek's name has slipped my mind... You probably noticed I'm using North American flora here, it's the closest thing to "creek side flora"... for now.

Well I'm glad you've got your priorities in order!  As much as I'm loath to admit it, when push comes to shove in real life, Simcity is one of the first things I'm forced to cut off the list too.  Nobody here's going to fault you for it.  I like the details you've put into the latest update, the winding gravel roads are very nicely done!  That winding road is very cool, and you've done a great job on that water course as well!

One thought on your boat props if you're working on it.  If you're inclined, you could make two different versions of the prop, one with the whole bottom intact for transparent water such as game water or the transparent plopable water, and another one truncated at the waterline.  A boat truncated at the waterline would work really nicely on the non-transparent plopable water that sits flat on the ground (such as the edmonton style, or Pegs Tahoe).  Anyhow, just a thought that occurred while I was admiring that boat again.

Keep up the great work!

Joel ~ Ah, they are wonderful, aren't they?

sumwonyuno ~ Hehe... No, it's not the best road to drive on... and, yes they are Power Poles running through there, they're avaliable in the 3RR (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=159.0).

Bobbi ~ Thanks my friend, and the Sugar fields are massive in Real Life too.

Battlecat ~ Yes, it is unfortunate that SimCity 4 has to draw the short straw, it pained me to keep you guys in suspense like that, but it was necessary. Thank you for your comments on the road, it is as windy in Real Life as I have shown you, I'll get some real life pictures one day... I'm glad that tug boat stuck in your mind  :P I was thinking of something along those lines too (heh, you know what they say: "Great minds think alike"). Keep an eye on my TD Creations thread, you'll see the development there  ;) I'll see you around!

976 ~ Thanks, my friend!

Tomas Neto ~ Thanks, Tomas! I'm glad you liked it!  ()stsfd()

Earth quake ~ Thanks, though, I can't take credit for the landscape, it is Dobdriver's Map after all  :D I'll see you around.

kwakelaar ~ Thanks, my friend... I hope to keep this as dynamic and interesting as possible!

Driftmaster07 ~ Thank you, Alex... And the railway is used to transport the Cut cane to the Sugar Mills for milling, they do just end abruptly like that  ;)

Luke09 ~ I think they'd be rather appropriate for Brazil too!  ;) They're made by Simgoober and are avaliable on the LEX.

djvandrake ~ Thanks my friend!

jimbo_jj ~ Thanks, my friend... you should see it in real life, endless paddocks and winding roads... it's wonderful. Hehe... I'm glad someone picked that up  ;)

jmyers2043 ~ I think that falls under the category of "Wait and see"...  :P Thanks for your interest, I'll be doing more with the boat later on.

dobdriver ~ Thanks mate! I couldn't imagine Australia any other way, to be honest  ;) I think naked trees just wouldn't be right in this land...

...Now it's time for another installment of... Mackay!...

Now, this update will be focusing on my recreation of our airport, which is not complete, because the terminal building is still in progress  :-\

This update will be showcasing Joel and my own work at SCAG, namely our new 737 Project (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9514.0) and the SCAG Turboprops (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8567.0)....

I present to you Mackay Airport... with every airline that services it.

The Virgin Blue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Blue) 737-800 is a common sight in the Mackay Airport, these aircraft flew direct to Brisbane or Sydney.... On a side note, there is a Virgin Blue plane called the "Mackay-be Diva"... I'm sure all of those who are into Horse Racing get the humour in that...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg200.imageshack.us%2Fimg200%2F5472%2Fjetstarr.jpg&hash=443edb5de880d6e5a14978f69a8f1177d5016635)
The Jetstar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetstar) A320... another common sight in Mackay, Jetstar use these aircraft on their only Mackay service, direct to Brisbane.

The QantasLink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QantasLink) DHC-8 Q400... these Aircraft serve Qantas' Mackay-Townsville-Cairns and the Mackay-Rockhampton-Gladstone-Brisbane services.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F2024%2Frex.jpg&hash=c088b542525a54f0d02c3448da12a76e6ac58d1b)
a Regional EXpress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Express_Airlines) Saab 340... a relatively new edition to Mackay, REX only introduced its Mackay-Townville run in September.

isn't that amazing... having all of our Passenger planes in port at the same time...  :P

Now, onto the other parts of the Airport...

Remember the Australian Customs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Customs) Dash 8 that we seen flying over the islands a few updates back?

Well, it finally landed... ::)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.imageshack.us%2Fimg34%2F2438%2Fcustomsw.jpg&hash=39a690d3a10880a9111a7fdc0a7b28436e018a30)
The plane has a seperate bay at the end of the tarmac, which is exclusively for Government Aircraft.

Now, we're going over the the Western Apron...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F2189%2Ftollone.jpg&hash=79e82ea61af260bc06ebd4c122f1bdc25e6df856)
What's that? It wouldn't be a Toll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toll_Aviation) Metroliner would it?  :P

Mackay is the Northern hub for Toll Priority, which operates the Air freight services in much of Australia.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F8964%2Ftolltwo.jpg&hash=13feeb7b94e204202e4ad1029e5e7513cdb7c893)
This plane is in for a long stay, as the first one was parked in the well, "Loading Zone" of the Apron.

The Car Rental Parking Lot... how many times have they been omitted from Airports in SC4?

Adrian.

As for the terminal is that some kind of a modular airport pack? where can it be got? It looks so much more realistic than what I've been using. Nice work Adrian (& Joel)

Very nice looking airport!

Actually, I had another thought about the tugboat.  This depends entirely on how props are created which I don't know much about at all.  Rather than rendering a chopped version, is it possible to render the boat in such a way that everything below the waterline would fall below the ground by default in the lot editor?  Actually, now that I think about it, that might be necessary to do that to make a boat float properly anyhow, assuming that the waterline in the lot editor is the ground level point.

If that's the case, then you'll only need one version of the prop, not two.

Great work here on a serious note. Someone else suggested if possible an overview of the airport, well that'd would be awesome (as well as the marina)! If anyone has not seen a pic of the marina wall at mackay, it rocks. my friend that i was visiting said that cars got washed off the road from big-ish waves?

Keep it up! (and so watching the new aussie team section :))

Why, I think it's been 5 days... time for an update!

But, first things first... I've always hated that phrase...

joelyboy911 ~ Why thank you, my friend... and, we'll get to an overview soon  ;)

thingfishs ~ Thanks, my friend! The whole airport (excluding planes) can be found here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=15604), here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16074), here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=17205) and here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=18476).

Earth quake ~ Thanks, my friend! I'm glad you like it...  :)

Battlecat ~ Thank you, my friend! I will be doing alot with that Tug Boat very shortly, Perhaps a Harbour update?

Schulmanator ~ Thank you, my friend! I'm glad too  :P

Driftmaster07 ~ Shhh! Before anyone else sees  ::), I was going to fix it, but LE was being a tad unresponsive... So, I'm switching to PIMX soon... thanks for your interest!

danielcote ~ Thanks Dan! Glad you liked it  ;)

Bobbi ~ Thanks Bobbi! I'll see you around...

scott1964 ~ Thanks Scott! I'm glad you like my work  ()stsfd()

calibanX ~ Thanks, Geoff! I'll have an overview one day...

dobdriver ~ Thanks dob... Hehe, your lingo is impressive, I'll give you that  :P... and as for the BAT, I'm one step ahead  ;) I've already started to BAT it...

thingfishs ~ Hello, again!

Tomas Neto ~ Thanks, Tomas! I'm glad that so many people liked it...   ;D

sumwonyuno ~ Thanks, my friend... and that Statue isn't there in real life (actually, that's where you pay the parking ticket  :P) but, I think it's a prop from one of the BSC Park sets.

976 ~ Thank you, my friend!

newsimaddict ~ Heh, why rush? An hour is nothing compared to Tiger's delay times  :P... Thanks, I'll get the overview shot... and, I was planning on doing the Marina very shortly. Yes, the Breakwater can get pretty violent during Cyclone season... I hope you drop in again soon, and thanks for your interest in the team!

Well, today we head into town....
...The boys are back in town

Spread the word around
Guess who's back in town

You spread the word around

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's bar and grill
The drink will flow and blood will spill
And if the boys want to fight, you'd better let them

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song
The nights are getting warmer, it won't be long
Won't be long till summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

The boys are back in town!
...

Alright, alright, I'll stop singing  :P

Now, we're visiting East Mackay today, which means beaches and sprawl... East Mackay is rich in history, past and present. You will notice a large varitation in the housing, from Mattb325's early 20th Century and more modern Estate-esque houses. These represent the way that Mackay-ites are frequently changing their minds about what to build. East Mackay is a more affluent area with a few lower-wealth housing patches slotted in.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F8388%2Fbeachone.jpg&hash=c890bab9c470d2c9a7931efe9c45b255a94cd46c)
Despite the fact we're having 30oC Days, the beach is a no-go really, due to the presence of Marine Stingers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_stinger) that appear in our waters in September through April.
By the way, I actually went to this beach for inspiration... I'd like to think I captured the foreshore nicely.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F8436%2Fcoastalwalkway.jpg&hash=7d4a5cd5aa59a4a2b6831ae93ab8699b96c6e356)
A walkway that runs through the area; the old Walkway is crumbling in many parts, because of underuse, ergo, underfunding... A cluster of Driftwood, a large cluster at that.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F5913%2Fbeachsidehousing.jpg&hash=4a22b3f844ecf294ab9784e985ed80097a756da9)
That same path approaching the Beachside suburbs.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F7043%2Fquotapark.jpg&hash=09cbfbe491f6814f16b0ece1f163660b7a01fe1c)
The "Quota Park" Carpark, at the end of Shakespeare Street. Quota Park is the reserve that runs along the foreshore, that divides Suburbia from the sand.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F9550%2Festate.jpg&hash=ebb4dcdeedd6d3aa997512b25f2778236b2e2954)
A little Estate complex that has both styles of Housing from this area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F2082%2Fschool.jpg&hash=e4d69027b403a4ab0246745db72ae70e0194294f)
Victoria Park State School and the long standing sprawl along side it.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F2201%2Fshopsl.jpg&hash=e1636bcd838d178636eb8ec4f995021f6e1959b5)
East Mackay's shopping strip, it's not the most attractive complex... but it serves its purpose.

That's all the pictures I have for you today, I'll have some more soon... I promise.

Now, Mackay has been inducted in the League of Nations, the League is very interesting and I look forward to interacting in the community. While the League is primarily Role-Playing, my style will not change, though you will see signs of the League around town  ;)

Also, I'll be working hard on a few projects: Joel and my 737 Project (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9514.0) and on my BAT work in Team Downunder (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=378.0)

...Best wishes for the Festive Season!...

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Excellent update!  You've done a great job on that foreshore!  The town itself looks great as well, although traffic looks a bit crazy!

In your 5th shot, the left side of the street has a lovely collection of homes with split rail style fences.  Where did you track those down?

Glad to hear Mackay has been inducted into the League of Nations. That sounds quite interesting. Excellent foreshore as well. Going to the beach to do research sounds like awful and tedious work. I'm sorry you had to go through that experience

Really a lovely way to represent the beach shore; It's too bad you can't go swimming there. (Or wouldn't, I should say.) That certainly is a nice variety of housing there. Are those Matt (Mattb325) and Jen (jen_p)'s homes only? If so they certainly go a long way, or are there some CSXs in there?  ???

I like that parking bay at the end of Shakespeare street. And you have a good variety of commercial BATs, does Australian commercial buildings look that much like rural american buidings? My uncle, who's been to Australia, (not Mackay though, but North Brisbane) says that there are a lot of similarities between Australia and the US. Hmm...

Ethan (ecoba) ~ Thank you, my friend! You can go swimming, I just wouldn't recommend it ;)... And yes, we share many similarities to US shops, particularly in the way of W2W... Thanks for your comment

Bobbi ~ Thanks, my friend!

scott1964  ~ How much you got?  :P Thanks for your comment, my friend!

...Forget "tea time", it's TEASER TIME...  :D

Today we visit Baker's Creek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakers_Creek,_Queensland)... The town, like so many in the Mackay region, rides on the back of the Sugar and Mining industries. However, Baker's Creek is also home to "Borthwick's Meat Processing Plant" that employs many within the township.

Baker's Creek is also significant as it is the site of Australia's Worst Aviation disaster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakers_Creek_air_crash). A USAAF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Air_Forces) B-17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-17_Flying_Fortress) crashed in the area on the 14th of June, 1943. Mackay was set up as a major base for the Allied forces in the area, while not strategically important, the region provided an "R&R" center for the servicemen and women fighting in New Guinea and South East Asia. The B-17 crashed after taking off from Mackay en-route to New Guinea carrying 35 passengers and 6 crew. Only one on board the plane survived.

Today a memorial park exists to honour the victims of the accident, but that will be shown in our next update.

Just a bit of a farm I made using SFBT (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=73.0)'s new farm house (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2288), which I absolutely adore!

The Bruce Highway along side "Dundula" (North Baker's Creek). You can see the Black Springs Golf Course in the background.

The centre of the Township... Showing the Bruce Highway once again. (oh yes, that isn't the Meat plant, just an industrial that I thought looked rather good there...)

You might notice a few different things in this update, the new Flora set I'll be using... and perhaps the new houses?

the new houses are apart of the ITC (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=229.0)'s wonderful Suburban Set (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9538.msg294691#new)... something that I'm Beta Testing.... it's  wonderful! You'll want to redo everyone of your suburbs, trust me...

I'll have the full update shortly...

I really liked your work on the beaches in your previous update and some very good shots from East Mackay.
And again some wonderful images from the more rural parts, you do those very well.
The green balls along the river are those stones or bushes? I have seen those before, but I think they always look rather odd.

That's interesting Adrian,

How is stuff fitting into the map, just something that cammo mentioned and I have not done yet is SC maps are 1024m rather than 1km so over 10 large city tiles the map is stretched almost 1km. So the mackay map is actually 32.76km but only showing 32km of terrain.

Guess I've been absent for a while, but that pic of the rail and road bridges deserved a comment. Typical Aussie layout. Roads and rail taking different routes and crossing each other on a regular basis (and in a lot of cases without rhyme or reason  :D ). Very nice indeed

Another nice rural MD. I like that you left so many spaces open; I tend to fill them wit forrests. Good works with the RRP paths. The railway line(s) look good so far but I haven't seen any RR stations yet.

The airport - is an airport.

Take care!

Driftmaster07 ~ Thanks, my friend!

ecoba ~ Thank you for your interest... I quite liked the bridges myself... I have that region shot for you today.

Bobbi ~ Thank you... Page 10... quite exciting!

kwakelaar ~ Thank you, my friend... Those are actually Mangroves, they look unusual from a distance... they were made by Goldiva and available on the STEX.

dobdriver ~ That's interesting... SC4's scale isn't that realistic anyway... don't worry about it, you're map is perfect as it is  ;)

Battlecat ~ Thank you, my friend! I agree, the SFBT and ITC sets are fantastic... As I said, the Suburban Set will revolutionise suburbs!

Luke09 ~ Thank you, Luke.

sumwonyuno ~ Yes, they are great.

tooheys ~  :D Thank you... and yes, our Roads and Rail cross for no actual reason... Thank you for the comment, Dave!

Tomas Neto ~ Thank you! I enjoy doing Rural Areas  ;)

Nardo69 ~ Thank you Nardo, I love you're forrests, they look fantastic in your settings, but they wouldn't suit mine... I'll have a bit of Train Station  action soon... there's only 3 stations in Mackay anyway  ()stsfd()

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg709.imageshack.us%2Fimg709%2F6070%2Fregion2.jpg&hash=add9bcda9f1d3119946914c55232f255e719a252)
The Locales of which I've shown so far are shown here... you may notice the lack of Airport, as I had to demolish that because I put it in the wrong tile  ::)

I admit that the map is a bit of a mess right now, but I'll have it completed in due time.

Now, y'all have a Merry Christmas if I don't get an update in before that!

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Head to Queensland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensland) for an action packaged January!

Don't worry, that's a real livery... It was made by Joel for our 737 Project.

I'll have a full update by the end of the week, I promise  ;D

I love specialized liveries. It breaks the monotony of seeing planes all exactly the same. How is this going to tie in to the full update?

nice virgin plane there Joel. Nice teaser Adrian.

It's been a big week, but a good one!

To be perfectly honest here, I never expected that I'd get to OSITM along side the MD Greats, or have such a stunning review in the First Community Magazine (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9814.msg299703#new)...I guess I must be doing something right!

Well, I hope I don't disappoint this month.

Before I finish off a lingering update, I'd better do the polite thing...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg36.imageshack.us%2Fimg36%2F5534%2Frepliess.jpg&hash=df03a25d5716b28fdd9c577e5bd799c89e90aac3)

emgmod ~ Why, thank you... and you'll see  ;)

976 ~ Thank you, my friend... and the 737s will be released soon enough. &Thk/( I think.

thingfishs ~ Thank you, thingfishs... and I'm 80% sure they were made by Goldiva, they should be available on the STEX under his name.

rooker1 ~ Thank you for that, I'm more than happy to be in the Spotlight.

thingfishs ~ Two replies?... No, it's fine my friend, visit as often as you like   ;)... and thank you, I was very humbled by both honours.

Now, on with the update...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg36.imageshack.us%2Fimg36%2F3891%2Fbannerwvx.jpg&hash=378b8817ab16656969de61bbdc032e65c4738b95)

I wanted to finish off the Airport once and for all today, I didn't show it all properly in the original update... and I had to relocate it shortly after that update.

Mackay Airport (YBMK)  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackay_Airport) has two runways, the main runway (14/32) is 1,981m long and the smaller, cross runway is (05/23) is 1,344m long. In 2008 the airport moved some 730,000+ passengers, this makes the Airport the 15th Busiest in Australia.

Ah, I guess I'd better share a bit of "Aviation Lingo" here... when I say "14/32" I am refering to the Magnetic Heading of the runway, as explained by Wikipedia:
Quote
Any runway is given a number between 01 and 36. This indicates the runway's heading: A runway with the number 36 points to the north (360°), runway 09 points east (90°), runway 18 is south (180°), and runway 27 points west (270°). Thus, the runway number is one tenth of the runway centerline's magnetic azimuth, measured clockwise from the magnetic declination.

Did ya get that?  ::) If you did, you probably already knew what it meant... for the rest of you, there's examples and pictures here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway#Orientation_and_dimensions).

Anyway, the numbers for our runways have not been made yet  &mmm I guess I'll do them one day!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg96.imageshack.us%2Fimg96%2F9559%2Ftarmac.jpg&hash=c7f8247846e3bd4ca65788ca74674469719a89b6)
A shot of the Head to Queensland Livery, I've never seen it in Mackay, I guess there isn't much sense in Advertising Queensland in Queensland. Also, you can see the Qantas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qantas) 737-400... which you may recognise from Joel's Update (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8641.msg290577#msg290577), in reality Qantas hasn't flown 737's to Mackay in many years, but I was feeling nostalgic  ;D

Also, here  (http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/1/8/4/1152481.jpg)is an excellent shot of the plane with the HtQ livery on it.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg195.imageshack.us%2Fimg195%2F6257%2Fgeneralaviation.jpg&hash=7fcc3ce1a6fc6dbee58d3939e1036a6ccef28a30)
The General Aviation Apron, were the Aero Club and other things are located... They aren't Warehouses, per se, but big sheds that have just been built along side the tarmac.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F3571%2Ffootballgroundsone.jpg&hash=04e60e26a500394cdc66dd55d9ea53ac088b2fc4)
The Football grounds, these run parallel to the Runway... there is a stadium planned for this area, but no construction as of yet. In this shot you can see the little drain that fills with seawater when the tide comes in, and flushes the storm water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Water) out to sea when the tides drop again.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F5359%2Fairportfirestation.jpg&hash=52c21a8e095c10224b9541128b54e368422156cc)
The Airport Fire Station, no super interesting stories here...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.imageshack.us%2Fimg34%2F548%2Fairportoverview.jpg&hash=1faf6669098b27a21887732bb56c706f0dc3cea3)
The Airport Overview... I had to white out the ...err... incomplete sections of that area. The shot shows a bit of an inlet that runs through from Far Beach.

Now, I'm going to close the "Airport" Chapter, I'm sure you've all had enough of it!

I'll have another update shortly... Perhaps with a late Christmas Present attached to it.

Havva good one,
Adrian.

First, congratulations on your entry into OSITM!  I'd say you've certainly earned it with your hard work here so far!

Great details about the local airport.  The Aeroclub and the little drainage ditch that flushes during the low tide are both really great touches!

Today we finish off our adventures through the Paddocks...For now.

You may remember in this  (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9144.msg289883#msg289883)update the Maraju-Yakapari Road?
...
Well, we're having a look at the start of it today, where it meets Sugarshed Road.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg705.imageshack.us%2Fimg705%2F5761%2Fbridgemp.jpg&hash=28a57addeb7dfe3a18b5031904dbcfeb55c41064)
The Road twists and turns before reaching the intersection... this particular bridge is rather quiet.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg109.imageshack.us%2Fimg109%2F817%2Fcanecommunity.jpg&hash=4cd5f50028841d00359bf47bbf086e1f1ee6e255)
Travelling past a cane block and small community. (I tend not to use that SAM Set in Res. situations, but this little subdivision doesn't really warrant the upgrade)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F925%2Fendoftheroad.jpg&hash=8525d6d152ff8a294bb7a99496206ccde60886bc)
Here's the final intersection, the North Coast Railway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Coast_railway_line,_Queensland) also crosses here. The continuing road goes around some hills and joins the Bruce Highway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Highway) at Farliegh (a town we will explore later on  ;))

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg8.imageshack.us%2Fimg8%2F4693%2Fdistribution.jpg&hash=c651b45561f39afda2c2ccff47780ba3700bc7cf)
A small Distribution Centre on the outskirts of the suburbs... this is kind've a transition from Agriculture to Suburbia... we'll continue down the road in our next update.

To celebrate the fact that Mackay has made it to OSITM I have a special offer, a set of three lots to create Cane paddocks with. The pack includes one "shed" lot, a 4x4 Cane lot and a 1x1 Cane lot... so you can create fields just like mine  ::)
The lots have custom icons, descriptions and are in the top half of the Parks Menu... As they are not functional.

Dependencies:

I wish I could use the cane fields in my (modern) recreation.  There used to be dozens of square miles of sugar cane fields along the rural coasts of the island back in the 1800's/1900's, but they're gone, and replaced (or soon to be replaced) by suburban houses. &mmm

The development is getting more and more urban as we go along.  I'm anxious to see what the rest of the estate looks like.

Today we will be touring through the Western suburb of Glenella... Glenella is a predominately Residential area, with a small Distribution cluster along Fursden's Creek. The suburb is still experiencing huge growth, with estates rapidly. The suburb was subject to widespread flooding in the February Floods of 2008, as the suburb is built along the floodplain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floodplain) of the Pioneer River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_River).

That aside, here's some pictures...

the Main road winding through the suburb... I'm not too happy with this picture, the houses didn't grow exactly right, and the road's textures are a bit off.  :-[

I know there's a bit of repitition in these shots... it was unavoidable  &mmm

Now, for reference I have a Region Shot showing where I've been showing the last few updates...

On a personal note, I won't be doing another proper update until the 26th of January... As I have to make a trip to Brisbane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane) and Hervey Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hervey_Bay,_Queensland) due to family reasons. I'll post some RL photos of these places, just to show y'all the Real Life Australia, to see how good my work really is  ::)... I must say, I'm not too impressed with the timing of this, I wouldn't go if I didn't have to... I'll still be around, as I'll have my laptop... but it doesn't have SC4 on it. %wrd

Glenella certainly is a nice suburb, Adrian. I think that it couold very well represent the style of Australian growth and the estate patterns are very interesting.

I certainly find that the mixture of residential BATs makes for a very interesting neighbourhood, especially how there is little repition close to one another, this makes it feel like it is a modern suburb with a list of house plans that are spread out throughout the neighbourhood.

Waiting for the 26th frantically, and eagarly...

Ethan

G'Day Adrian,

Congratulations for the OSItM award, as a realistic recreation, Mackay is coming along beautifully,

Some nice updates here, you've been a busy fella of late.

That's a great recreation of the airport and echoing what all the others have commented on like the lone trees, just how many paddocks have you been past, over, through that have been razed bar that one tree. Oodles.

Oblique set houses although not being on every house block is not something that uncommon to see and really breaks up the SC4 view. And I like those house construction lots too.

Have a good holiday, catch ya when ya get back.

*oktoberfest, I'd stick with the far less demanding English before trying the highly technical Australian :D

take it easy
dobdriver

ps look for alice soon.

Thank you for the comments, one and all  :)

Now, it is unfortunate that I had to make a dash for Brisbane, but you can't scedule Family Emergencies, can you?  ()sad()

But... you can make the most of the trip!

When I was in Brisbane I took the chance to Travel out to RAAF Amberley, which is going to become Australia's largest Air Force base. I was lucky enough to take the trip on one of the days that the C-17 was doing a touch and go training routine... I did manage to get a photo of the bird in flight...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg230.imageshack.us%2Fimg230%2F4641%2Fc17if.jpg&hash=7ee7e2cd27f03d475a9fd282c10982a138ffe3fb)
I hope y'all can see it well enough... I was taking a "shortcut" back to the City when I got this photo.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg413.imageshack.us%2Fimg413%2F4900%2Fcanberragg.jpg&hash=d57c658a2072ddfe75e7073889c6f97d14fa88c1)
a Canberra Bomber on Gate Guard duty... this was the first Canberra built in Australia.

Enough Plane-geekery!

Now, on Sunday I made the trip up to Hervey Bay for a brief trip (brief, but ongoing!)... here's a few Beach shots to tide you over...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg522.imageshack.us%2Fimg522%2F8049%2Fpointvernon.jpg&hash=1f16b3a21f55383114a6995b3edbab729d2f7ac3)
A shot from Urangan Beach to Point Vernon... which I quite like.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg233.imageshack.us%2Fimg233%2F4518%2Ffraserfrombeach.jpg&hash=90ca83e6007334d11cda2c1355ac90e03a71b308)
Looking South from that same beach... you can see Fraser Island in the Background.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg233.imageshack.us%2Fimg233%2F3346%2Froundaboutb.jpg&hash=d425a2fb7fc982bc4083e7ac5113afb2d1ca7fb6)
A shot of two sculptures at a roundabout in the "Esplanade"... I quite like the Whale one, to be honest.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my Amateur photography, and it gives y'all a bit of an insight into my world.
I might pop in with more photos soon, but if not... I'll be back on the 26th

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Very nice scenery around there, I must say. I like the C-17 shot, btw. Don't they say the Globemaster handles like an aircraft less than half its size? I mean, I saw USAF guys doing a demo with that thing up at the EAA Convention, and they were pulling maneuvers in that baby that I never thought were possible in a cargo jet.
Title: Re: Mackay... or, The Real Australia
Post by: Kumba on January 24, 2010, 07:07:24 PM
Very nice pictures, looks like you had a nice time!

Trainguy -

It is meant to be a military cargo aircraft that will be shot at, launched missles at, operate in a war enviroment, and to complete short landing, so it is supposed to handle like a aircraft half of its size to avoid all of above and to make tight manuvers. As well as cargoes are typically strapped down tighter than a normal freightner aircraft so the cargo can take the stress.

Basically, it is a Military cargo aircraft, and behaves like one.

Thanks for the comments, and well wishes  :) I hope everything is a bit more stable family-wise from now on...  %wrd

I'd do personal replies, but I'm trying to get ready for school tomorrow  ::)... I noticed a few of you were asking for the construction lots... they're avaliable here (STEX Link) (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?p=files&keyword=weasel945&view=all)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F9209%2Fbannerqv.jpg&hash=5ce87893dee114bf401741eb89bdaa6a0d89093e)

Today we're visiting Slade Point, which is a beach side suburb. The suburb is a wealthier suburb, dotted with large houses with excellent views of the Ocean. The suburb also has a little bit of warehousing mixed in... The suburb also has an excellent walkway system (which I made using the Marrast Walkway set (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16686))

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F884%2Fwarehouses.jpg&hash=abe946c6322f450a559e8c7da44bc3775ca1b199)
A warehouse block that shows surrounding housing, an office building and a walkway down to a bus stop.
That "office block" is actually a hospital that I thought looked rather good as an office building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg188.imageshack.us%2Fimg188%2F2896%2Fschoold.jpg&hash=f836860280c6675e212009e955eb87bfed947a92)
The local Primary School... and the aforementioned Bus Stop.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F7803%2Fnaturereserve.jpg&hash=14474e3bfe0181c75856a669406126064a01fc08)
A "nature reserve" that borders on the shoreline, these were put into practise to conserve the Waterfront Flora and Fauna that was being threatened by development.

I hope you enjoyed this "micro update", I should have a fuller update by the end of the month...  :-\ (depends on my work load!)

Havva good one,
Adrian.

scott1964 ~ Thanks, Scott!

djvandrake ~ Thank-you, and no problems  ;)

sumwonyuno ~  :D yes, there are some nice houses in that suburb!

Nexis4Jersey ~ Thanks Nexis, and as dobdriver said, we only got the RHD version... (more details below)

dobdriver ~ Thanks for answering Nexis' question, my friend. Also, I use RHD because that's the best way to use most of the Road-side furniture.

976 ~ Thank you!

Today we will be visiting the Northern township of Kuttabul... which is a tiny town that has the Bruce Highway and North Coast Railway running through the centre of it... Here's an overview...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg300.imageshack.us%2Fimg300%2F3735%2Ftownoverview.jpg&hash=45a4f92bd5432bd975a44b8d18d5edb25deeff2a)
This town's housing is exclusively Suburban Set, which is currently being developed by us at the UCC... The set suits this town well, as it had it's heyday in the  1960's... and ignore the bout of "China Syndrome" near that watertower  ::)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg137.imageshack.us%2Fimg137%2F5005%2Fpaddocktwo.jpg&hash=27bf42ed15e12cd52bffd8d266b77ce6bbfa0514)
A shot of a cow paddock on the Western side of town... These cows are taking a well deserved break from the sun!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg508.imageshack.us%2Fimg508%2F4695%2Fpaddockone.jpg&hash=d94c12bb544b1375d20265a426da00bea06786f9)
Another shot of the paddock.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg407.imageshack.us%2Fimg407%2F5268%2Frailbridge.jpg&hash=5fc30f3d09a4d44682c919569c1d563050dbd53c)
A few houses beside the bridge that crosses Kuttabul Creek. Also, this shows the Livestock platform that has been apart of the town for years, and is a  reminder of the Golden Age of Railway travel.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F4958%2Fschoolaw.jpg&hash=69d94e45e289d33e7b52ffec2aba5c89d84dbac6)
The town centre, with the shops, school and distribution depot.

That concludes today's update... tell me what you think!

I'll be back around soon,

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Kuttabul is really a lovely little village, if it can even be called that, what is the population? Anyway, I'm really liking those houses. Now, I will be taking this MD away from Mackay for a few weeks, so we can look at a different (fictitious) township. We will be looking at "Stuart", which will be made entirely out of my imagination.

Stuart is a township based 50 kilometres from the Coral Sea on the Queensland coast. The township thrives on the sugar and manufacturing industries. The Town's position on the Bruce Highway  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Highway) makes it a popular rest stop on the long highway. The township has a population of around 4,000 people. The population is sustained by the Cane, Limited Manufacturing and the nearby RAAF Base.
So, let's have a look at the town's history. All pictures belong to Wikimedia Commons, or have entered Public Domain in Australia.

The Township was founded when the Stuart family settled in the area:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fe%2Fe7%2FKentuckySoldiersSettlementEstateSettlerscottage.jpg&hash=835050513de0302ed43f9c666599e8e5fb0624a9)
Settlers pause to take a historic photograph!

The Stuart family begun farming Cattle, but as Sugar Cane was trialled in Queensland the Stuarts decided to move into the burgeoning Sugar industry:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F1%2F1c%2FI005.jpg%2F800px-I005.jpg&hash=8f76916af0864df2bc4cf9e22c5b2e331242308f)
Working to clear the land for plantation

Before long, a small deposit of Gold was found in the area, and a minor gold rush ensued:

Unfortunately, it seemed that the newly expanding settlement had encroached on the Local Aboriginal Population:

Fortunately, the Aboriginals and the European settlers reached a territorial agreement, that meant the Aboriginals could stay in a reservation that was setup.

When war broke out in Europe in 1914, hundereds of young men signed up for the war effort. A recruitment party marched through the Main Street:

Many young men answered the call...

The newly formed Australian Flying Corps set up a training base in the Stuart area, which attracted many young Aviation fans:

After the war ended, the Great Depression struck the township, with the Stuart family (now in the 2nd Generation) having to lay off many of their workers.

The Sugar Mill, circa 1935.

Before long, World War II broke out and for the first time the Australian Mainland was directly threatened. Nearby RAAF Stuart was re-equipped with Fighters to fight the Air war in the Pacific, once again, many of the Young Men answered the call:

After the war finished, many of the Local volunteers made it back to the township:

During the 1960's the Rail link to Stuart was decommissioned, due to the advent of faster car travel and the new Airlink to the township.
The local economy remained strong on the Sugar industry until the automation of much of the industry, when the township declined.

Haven't been able to stop by in quite a while, Adrian - RL issues to deal with - and I've missed out on seeing a lot of good work here. I'll be trying to catch up on Mackay and several more great MDs in the weeks to come, though.

I like what I've seen on the last few pages. I really like the recent B&W photos and the historic back story, too. You've done your homework well and presented the results of your research very effectively.

Good job...

Well, here we are in Update Two of the Stuart district... Today, we'll be looking at "Corfield" which is a small village that is located about 10 kilometers (6.21 Miles) from the Stuart township. The village is home to just over 1,000 people. The district features a primary school, small shopping district, farming supply dealer and a small community centre. on the Western edge of the Village their is a small walking track through the Pioneer Range where many artefacts from the Gold-Rush days can be found.

The village centre, that was recently revamped to accommodate the growing population.

The Canefields around Corfield has their own Private Tram system, that was used to hall the cut-cane to the Mill in Stuart after the Corfield Mill was shutdown. The tramway is still in use today, but at a significantly reduced capacity. Some photographs of the Tramway system:

The Trams in operation today. Note the change in cargo, the first photo had whole Cane stalks, while the one above has segments of cane. This is due to the change in harvesting techniques.

Thanks for viewing today's update, I sure hope you enjoyed it. We'll be looking at the Tramway system as soon as I make my own GLR textures ::)

Next update will be big, I think.

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Ooh, custome GLR textures; this will be interesting.

Corfield is really a beautiful village, Adrian. I really like the first picture of the road running through the cane fields, the lot that you've created for the farmhouse is really beautiful as well. I like how small the village is; the overview picture you posted really seems to give a good sense of scale. I also like the 'bypass' road, lots of small towns seem to have these across the world.

Great job, my friend. Hope to see more soon.

Well guys, it's time for a micro-update and a bit of a teaser, I think  ;D

but first...
Replies:

Will (penguin007) ~ Thank you very much! I do love working with FAR, and I did like how to ford turned out as well.

scott1964 ~ Thank you Scott!  :)

976 ~ Thank you!

io_bg ~ Thank you very much, I'm very glad you liked it  ()stsfd()

Ethan (ecoba) ~ Thank you, Ethan. I think that making the textures will be rewarding, and then I'll have to do my own Automata... I doubt that GLR was designed with me in mind  :P I'm thrilled to know you liked Corfield. Thank you for commenting on that Farmhouse, I wasn't sure how it'd look ingame. The village took a lot of time to sculpt right, but I think it was worth it. I was hoping that overview shot would give some sense of scale, something which I'm always wondering if my MD has. And the bypass road is very typical, I can't argue there. The town I live in now was supposed to get one, but it was routed through some Cane fields, so (naturally!) there was a crack-up about it and it fell through  ::). I hope to keep everyone coming back!

RickD ~ Thanks, Rick! I'm glad it was that realistic  :D Thanks, I'll be showing some ingame shots soon... hopefully!

Battlecat ~ Thank you, my friend! I'm glad you liked it  ()stsfd()

Yan077 ~ Thank-you very much, Yan!

Today we'll be looking at a little farm that's on the corner of two main roads, the continuing road leads to RAAF Stuart, and the ending road leads out to the nearby ranges. In Australia recently there has been a trend for farmers to "subdivide" blocks off their farms to sell as housing blocks, much of the practice has been outlawed now, but sometimes a Farmer will find a loophole:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg706.imageshack.us%2Fimg706%2F9374%2Fnewcommunity2.jpg&hash=d51535ab42a99b11c40c88781de5ee76ca2c430b)
Now, in this picture you can see the three new Alottments that have been created, small lots, but enough to put a house on. You can also see the power substation that has been built to accommodate the new housing, along with the street lighting.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg682.imageshack.us%2Fimg682%2F2082%2Fnewcommunity.jpg&hash=286dfe39e24f4ad25f4ea6d4ca28b0e19daea710)
In this picture you can see the large trees that would've been planted by the original settlers; in Cane-Growing regions you can generally tell a early settlement by finding the tallest and oldest trees.

And, to wrap it up... a teaser...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg97.imageshack.us%2Fimg97%2F2309%2Fwhatisthatu.jpg&hash=dd234c6abd7842ac6033a27c7e751c3e74459d09)

Need anything be said?  :P

Until next time,
Adrian.

Wonderful update, Adrian.

I really do feel that you give us a good sense of scale in Mackay. I also feel like, with the help of an occasional region view, which you seem to give us at perfect intervals, I know almost exactly where everything is.

As for the micro-update, it was just as good as a normal update. I think that the 'subdividing' of cane fields is really an interesting topic, and I'm pretty sure that farmers are doing it in North America, as well. As strange housing blocs are starting to pop up all over satelite pictures. I personally think that the second picture is beautiful because of the large eucaplyptus trees lining the road.

The airplane photo? Perhaps you're reconstructing Mackay's old airport, or the RAAF Stuart? Either way, we'll be seeing some air ports soon.  :)

Hello again, time for a full update... I suppose  :P

But, as always... Replies.

i_love_lamp ~ Thank you, and you'll soon see for yourself  ()stsfd()

Ethan (ecoba) ~ Many thanks, Ethan! I'm glad you can see the scale of the place... if you ever want a Region Shot, just ask... I'm not one for showing Macro-details that often.

It looks like we're from common stock, I love looking into little planning details as well. It is such a shame to see agriculture drying up for housing, but that's the way things are. I also loved the look of it the trees, I'm glad you did as well  ()stsfd()

Mackay's airport will be redone in the future, when I BAT the terminal and stuff... the picture is from RAAF Stuart, as you correctly guessed. Thanks for your comment!

Jordan (canyonjumper) ~ Thank you, Jordan! I'm glad people enjoy the detailing that I put in  ()stsfd()

vinlabsc3k ~ Thanks very much my friend! If you ever get the chance to visit, be sure to!

Schulmanator ~ Thanks, but the plane isn't UDI-able. It's a static prop, that I rotated and edited to be in a landing position. I would make it a UDI prop, but it's not possible with such a complex model. Thanks for visiting!

976 ~ Thank you my friend!  :)

Part one...

I guess I should point out that this base is entirely fictional, however I may refer to real life Units and Squadrons, and every aircraft is in its real-world livery. This base has been inspired by several Real world RAAF Bases... but is not an accurate representation of anyone of them.

A brief history.
RAAF Stuart was formed as a training base for the newly form "Australian Flying Corps" in late 1918, the base provided training for pilots who would be sent to Europe to fight alongside New Zealanders and Britons in the First World War. After the war, the base was scaled back but retained a training role. With the outbreak of WWII in 1939, the base was once again a hub of activity. Training was upscaled and new fighter Squadrons were formed at the base. The Royal Australian Air Force used the base as a Transport hub, mainly for PBY Catalina's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBY_Catalina). One of these Aircraft remains in operation today as a Tourist hub in the nearby Bay. After World War II the RAAF was considerably demobilised and the future of RAAF Stuart remained in doubt. The base was almost completely abandoned in 1956, but a revival of the Base occured in 1957 and the base was reinstated as a Coral Sea patrol base, this role continues today as the base is home to three AP-3C Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP-3C_Orion) Aircraft. 1976 saw the introduction of Mirage III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirage_III) fighters to the base, and provided a new Northern Apron with Hardened Shelters for the fighter detachment, of course after the Mirage III's had been retired, the Base was re-equipped with F/A-18A Hornets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F/A-18_Hornet). By 1982 RAAF Stuart also became home to a detachment of F-111C Aardvark  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-111_Aardvark). Since 2008 the base has also been home to 3 No. 37 SQN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._37_Squadron_RAAF) C-130H "Hercules" transports, and in 2010 received a detachment of two No. 2 SQN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._2_Squadron_RAAF) 737AEW&C "Wedgetail" aircraft to further the surveillance role of the base.

so much for short, eh?

I guess I could describe the base better with some visual aids!

Notes and Thanks...

I am aware of the Graphical glitch on the Tug, it only affects one rotation... and it happens that I couldn't avoid some rotations.

The Huey on Gate Guard isn't to the exact specifications, as Delta and I were discussing in my RAAF Project thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9135.msg320477#msg320477), but it's more about the overall affect that two technical problems, right? :P

Now, my greatest, greatest thanks goes out to three of the greatest people ever, and three great teams:

joelyboy911: Thanks Joel, your modelling and tutelage made this whole thing possible, if it weren't for you... well, I wouldn't have the Wedgetail, C-130 or any respectable models. You could almost call this RAAF Joelyboy, because it's as much mine as yours.

fafalone: Many thanks, your TMIP (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10556.0) has been invaluable in making a more realistic airport, even if I did use your least favourite ground texture :P

ShadeSlayer: Thanks Alex! Your ARIP (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10264.0), along with PLT's ARP (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=10315.0), made this bases' roads so much better.

AC: For your fantastic RMIP-2 sets, and all the accessories of yours... I'm sure it'll get even better with RMIP-3!

SCAG and Team Downunder: For being great chaps and being sources of inspiration and encouragement.

The biggest thanks goes out to... ... my commentors! it's great to see feedback. Thank-you one and all  ;D

As always, comments, critique and queries always welcome here.

I'll see y'all at Part II!

Havva good one,
Adrian.

Wonderful update, mate. As much as I adore seeing the pictures of our planes in action, I am impressed by your crafting of the support area, the barracks and the parade ground.

The buildings you've BATted, the ATCT and the bunker for the F-111s, they look superb.

Keep up the great work!

Great job, once again, Adrian. There certainly were a lot of different planes in this update, and I think that it might have been equivalant to a small course on military aviation.  :D I particularly liked the grounds of the base, we have a navy base in the city where I live, and it resembles yours greatly, well without the airport at least.

In the sixth picture of your update, I must ask where you got the brown building that is centred in the picture, with the blue warehouses behind. I love this BAT, but have not been able to find it...  &mmm

Thank you all for the comments!  ()stsfd() I'll reply to all of you individually at Part Two, which is coming together nicely.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what this is?

Oh yes, and not to keep you in suspense, Ethan... that's apart of the SNM set, but the original building and lot is a SimGoober and is on the LEX, here (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1382).

Until next time,
Adrian.

I believe I have seen those kind of airport maps in FSX. I think the number are the runway orientation and length.  ()stsfd() I am still a Flight Sim Noob, though.  ::)
Cool idea to make this for your SC4 airbase.

Replies!

joelyboy911 ~ Thank you for your comment, Joel! I'm thrilled that you loved it, my BAT skills are still elementary, though  :-[ Thank you for your comment!

ecoba ~ Thank you for both of your comments, my friend! I'm glad you liked the little bit of research and story I put into it  ()stsfd() I'm glad that it resembles your local base, the Canadian Forces and the Australian Defence Force have much in common! RickD ~ Yep, you're right there! They are used on Flight Sim, as a replication of Real Life. you're right on the numbers and designations  Thank you for your comment!

kalvar ~ Thanks, kalvar... but all those aircraft are my own, I will certainly release them to the public. You can follow the progress of them in my SCAG Project thread, here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=9135.0).

Part two...

Well, as I left off last time, there's the "otherside" of the Base, which includes the Maintenance Hangar and F/A-18A Bunkers. The Bunkers are there to protect the Hornets from the weather, prying eyes and degrees of attack. These Shelters house the detachment of 76SQN RAAF that is based permanently at RAAF Stuart. The Maintenance Hangar is fairly self explanatory, it's there so planes can be kept up to scratch.

Anyway, I'll explain more in the captions.

Great update, Adrian.

I really enjoyed the way that you presented this whole update, it seems that you really do take the time to plan out your updates before you show them to us. One thing I really liked about this update is how you showed us overviews, and then zoomed in for the details.

Also, does this whole base fit on to a large tile? I wonder because of the first picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg8.imageshack.us%2Fimg8%2F5238%2Ftaapresentation.jpg&hash=763d38cf9e7fbddc50be44c8a5e08caa46d26971) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Australia_Airlines_Flight_538)

Not so long ago was the 50th Anneversary of the Trans Australian Airlines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Australia_Airlines) Fokker 27 (Fokker Friendship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_Friendship)) crash that happened of Mackay in 1960. The Aircraft was approaching Mackay in thick fog, and after an aborted landing, vanished. The Flight had stopped in Rockhampton previously and was carrying boys from the boarding schools back to Mackay for the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

Unfortunately, all 29 people aboard the flight perished. Some of the wreckage has been recovered, however many bodies are still unaccounted for.

The real cause for the crash was never determined, but was the catalyst for the Flight Data Recorder (aka the "Black Box") to be developed and installed on all Australian Airliners, and eventually all airliners across the globe.

So yes, that's my tribute to those who died in the accident, the second worst aviation accident in Australia (paradoxically, the worst aviation disaster also occurred in Mackay...)

You might be wondering where that aircraft came from... my good friend and teammate, Joel modelled it... I just made the livery as a tribute to the crash.

Until next time,
Adrian.

Great thread, although I suspect it has fallen away due to other pursuits. I was thinking the colour in most of the pics was too saturated, but then I remembered you're doing Nth Qld where the greens jump out at you and smack you in the face  :D

The military content is great, esp. the RAAF and civil stuff. If you ever get tempted to do some field firing ranges there a few SNM lots that have tanks (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=104) & artillery (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=103) (with and without cam nets) that use timed props so they are only there during the day.

I notice a few low bridges in various posts (rail and a road one the reminds me of the bridge in Odd Angry Shot). Where did they come from? Plus, where did the "houses under construction" lots come from?

sumwonyuno, ShultzCity, Gilikov1994 ~ Thank you for your comments, much appreciated  :)
deadwoods ~ Thanks for your thread bump  :D I'm glad you like the green, sometimes I thought it was a bit too much... but you're right, I think I captured North Queensland well, too  ()stsfd() I'm glad you like the RAAF and airport stuff, your SNM series is still the backbone of any military base, you're right about the Artillery and Tank lots- I'll be featuring them soon, actually...  :) Hmmm. All of my Bridges are from the NAM Team and are on the LEX. I'm glad you asked about the construction lots- they're avaliable on the STEX here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?p=files&keyword=weasel945&view=all), they were made by weasel945 and are in a few different packs of his. Well, after a busy Christmas/New Year break, I'm returning to MD-ing on a regular basis.

Firstly, you may be aware of some catastrophic flooding in Australia (http://au.news.yahoo.com/queensland/a/-/mp/8585001/rockhampton-to-be-flooded-until-mid-january/), which is hitting areas about 400 kilometers from where I live at present.

Anyhow, let's get on with some replies:
scott1964 - Thanks Scott  :)
noahclem - Thank you very much, I like the occasional night shot, too. Those distribution centers are jestarr's, I believe. They're definitely available on the LEX.
marsh - Thank you marsh, I'm glad you liked it  ()stsfd()
Battlecat -  ;D It's good to be back, I never thought I'd see the day that I let it run into the Inactives. Thank you for the congratulations, and it's good to know I haven't lost it  :D
canyonjumper - Thanks Jordan! Don't worry, I didn't have a name for the town, either  :P The pathways I'm using is a mixture of the Marrast footways (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16686) and jeronij's White Trail Parks (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=370)
Tomas Neto - Thanks Thomas  ;D
rooker1 - Thank you, Robin. It's good to be back
nedalezz - Thank you very much! It's good to know that I'm capturing my inspiration  ;D

Today, I'll be showing off a bit of a port that I've been toying with since NBVC released his Modular Docks (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=25596). After looking through Google Earth for a few hours, I decided to go with a "freehand" design, and I think the results are pretty good.

This port has not been containerised (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Containerization), instead handles smaller parcels of freight. I'm thinking about doing a Naval Base addon in the future, but nothing has been set in stone.

For now, enjoy these 12 images of the Port and surrounds:

Good to see you back at MDing Adrian. I had to look twice at that night picture of the ship, I first thought it was one of Girafe's cablecars $%Grinno$%

noahclem - Thank you very much, I like the occasional night shot, too. Those distribution centers are jestarr's, I believe. They're definitely available on the LEX.

Thanks, got it (already had it downloaded but not installed actually  &mmm )

Nice use of NBVC's new port set! It looks great and I look forward to trying it out. I like the surrounding industrial area as well

Happy New Year!
