Introduction:
"Arlington Bay" is a metropolitan area of many cities and smaller communities around the bay of Arlington. Arlington Bay is located on the north-western coast on the American continent. The cities are connected mostly by a dense highway-network, and the railroad-network is very poor developped. Only in very dense areas you will find some subway lines and a small bus-network. But even with extensive highway-network, Arlington Bay Area's mayors still face serious congestion problems, especially during the rush hour of weekdays. The "Arlington Bay International Airport", located in the suburbs of Arlington and Mesa, is furthermore a big traffic hub on the north-western coast.
Besides Arlington Bay is famous for it's beautiful white sand beaches and its multi-variant flora and fauna.

I like very much what you're doing here. With first, an awesome start, but also, on the city you've shown there. Also the region you choose to develop on is very nice, and will fit perfectly with the general ambiance of the cities. But, is your region American styled or more European ?
The mix of modern skyscrapers and old art-deco styled building is really well done. The plazas around the city are well modeled and make the city good looking, and, make the city more alive and pleasant. Look like a city where we want to live in !

Very nice work on your MD, Arlington is looking like a very densely populated city, also nice to have the map as a reference as a starter.
Oh, wonderful just wonderful. Although, like Bernhard, I am very sad Arlington has a poorly developed rail network.
Your city is absolutrly beautiful, great way of blending BATs.

Very nice and big airport, everything is perfectly aligned. The plaza in front of the main building is looking good.

Arlington Bay sure is a very nice city. And its airport is certainly no exception. The casual turning of the terminals is excellent, it makes me dearly wish that I could build and airport, but unfortunately my computer won't let me, it takes up all of my airport space! I think that the props on the tarmac are realistic and very well laid out, and you also have a very nice variety of planes in the area. The cargo terminal is so realistic! I love the fuel tanks (behind the great security fencing) and the actual building is wonderful. The ways that the taxiways and runways, and tarmacs all connect is so realistic, if I didn't know better, and had an overhead shot, I would say this is a real airport.
The second mosaic is just as lovely! This time you have an action shot of a plane moving down the runway! wow, I've never seen that before. I like the variety of the commercial buildings along the avenue to the north of the airport. It seems to be close to what would pop up along an in-town airport. (This is in-town, right?) The front-terminal is very, very realistic. The entrance plaza is wonderful, and I do like the open subway station. There is a good amount of parking, decent of course for an airport of this size. I also like all the buildings across the street, a very nice ixture of BATs.
Your work clearly reminds of that of Daniel's (Shadow Assassin)'s. YOu seem to have a close style of Photoshopping, and a very similar selection of modds.

Yeah the aiport was originally built at the cityborder but because of the ongoing developement of Arlington and Mesa it became an in-town airport. I think I will shoot an overview picture someday to show you the whole airport in one picture.
You're not the first one who told me this :D. In fact I really like SA's work and it's quite possible that I got influenced by it a bit. But sadly I have no idea and no time to use LE to design nice custom content. :(

kwakellaar: Thanks, yeah you're right they really have a hard live living that near the interstate :P. I was in LA in summer 08 and I saw alot of building even more near of big freeways - a bit of a shock for mid-europeans I guess. :D

The river is amazing.
Wow, that's a really impressive plop water river, your detailing is beautiful. I really also like those tall yellow trees that are flanking that highway. That's a very nice water tower shot too, I like the cleared right of way that it is located in.
And that little village encompassed by suburbs is so quaint.

I love the mattb houses for my burbs as well! They work perfectly don't they? And I love the contrast and brightness of the images. Everything pops off the screen.
The shopping centers, the picturesque river, all of it is great. I do have to agree with some about the proximity of houses to the interchange and highways though. I'm from Chicago, and the suburbs around here often have sound barriers or walls to shield suburban folk's delicate sensibilities from the noise.
Oh and also, give yourself a pat on the back...this MD is so awesome it brought me out of my lurker phase! ;)

Fantastic work on Cape Cod. You've picked out some great BATs to build an old town center. I love you river too. You've made it look realistic while using minimal grasses and rocks. It's really great.

Rady: Thanks. :) This is no grass Lot, it is the terrain mod, that makes this yellow flowers on the floor. I'm actually using the Italian terrain mod, available on the LEX.

Sciurus: I don't really understand, why you think it could be an european city. I assume that american cities have water towers two. ;) But in a way you're right, smaller towns seem to be more similar (euro-american), than big cities.

I do have a little question though. I notice a lot of small TE parking lots around the small downtown areas. Are those hooha47's from ST or your own creations? I ask because I was thinking of downloading some of hooha's PL, but the idea of 1x1 modular parking lots...the MML frustration, menu clutter, etc...I just couldn't bring myself to not be so lazy when it feels so good to be just that... $%Grinno$%
Anyways, keep up the great work...I'd love to see some more big city love sometime if you ever get around to it. ;D Those first posts are still my absolute favorite of yours...

cubby420: Hey, thank you! Yes the parking lots are the ones from hooha47, but I only got the gray basic pack. You don't have to use the MML-Mod, and the good thing is that they are situated at the very end of the transportation menu. :) And I promise, there will be some more big city pictures soon. ;)

Excellent looking industrial area, that's a very nice selection of older buildings there!
I agree with Battlecat, that industrial area looks excellent, mostly due to the high level of similarity in building style. The older, larger, boxier, browner, industrial structures of days past (at least where I'm from) are still somewhat missing from the game, despite the work of excellent creators (SG, Jestarr, even a few BSP projects come to mind immediately). I particularly love the China Buffet across the street from the large manufacturing plant with the small town W2W street across the tracks because...well...I don't know...but I feel like I've driven that road before near where I come from, and that's pretty damn awesome. ()stsfd()
My nitpick of the day I guess ( ;) if I have to have one) is that while I concede the euro road texture is often more aesthetically pleasing, this American style suburb just seems amiss without the old yellow lines and dashes.

As usual, beautiful pic there. I just realized I downloaded Andreas' power plant a while back and never tested it...so this is the first I've actually seen of it blended in game. Beautiful and detailed model and lot for sure.
Do remember however, that nuclear power plants are heavily secured (or at least should be... /wrrd%&) facilities. Perhaps some more effective security measures would fit well here. Some of the SNM lots work well, especially the tall barbed wire fences and gatehouses. Just a suggestion.

mightygoose: Thanks. There are many different sizes of atomic power plants. This one is actually a real power plant situated in Switzerland. But it's surely not an especially big one, I think the real one is already more than 40 years old.

As you can see, all the large city-tiles have a black line at their bottom. I play 1929x1200. Does anybody know how do get rid of these lines?

That graphical glitch is a known bug playing at resolutions above 1600xwhatever. If you switch back to 1600 and resave, the glitch will disappear.

Yeah some large, cartoonish Maxis industrial boxes would look...odd to say the least. The new (relative considering this game is how old now?) content available has fixed that flaw though.

Kind of. My concentration is finance, but I'm interested in the operations side of a business as well. I'm taking a pretty intense operations management course where we are examining in depth the supply chains and fulfillment processes of several specific companies relative to study of various industry wide supply chain practices and trends.
Wal-mart pretty much revolutionized the way large retailers do business, and much of that is owed to the processes created for their distribution centers...which were very new for the time and still operate more efficiently than anyone else around today. ...On my side of the pond at least. Not quite sure of Wal-marts status in most European countries though, as more protective legal standards visa vi labor and supply partners make the Wal-mart business model less aggressive and ultimately less successful overseas.

Fantastic! The new additions from the NAM and NWM look great here. Its nice to be able to construct avenues without the tacky and unrealistic looking lit divider. I'm looking forward to seeing how you utilize the rest of the NAM teams treats in further updates.

I'm sorry I can't give you an update today, I'm very busy these weeks. Work, nice weather and soccer world championship made it impossible to play Simcity. I hope I can give you some updates the upcoming weeks!
This MD is phenomenal, it's almost exactly what I would want my city to look like. Thought the tennis courts on top of the apartments were interesting to say the least, not sure I'd be able to play on that the amount of balls I'd hit over the fence.

Now, after a long time I have an update for you! Downtown "New Memphis" is so far finished. I also downloaded a few new building (especially NYBT), and I changed to euro-asphalt sidewalk texture.:) Today I'm gonna show you some overview pictures, and in the next update I'm planning to show some close-up's.
Lets begin with a mosaic. :) It shows the center of downtown moving from north to south. Sadly I had to plopp some buildings because I wanted everything to be right in place.

Now a picture showing the lower eastside. Typical for the eastside is the diagonal Jefferson-Avenue. It devides the commercial district and residental areas in the east an north.

Now we move a little northways along the Jefferson-Avenue. As you can see, the legendary Waldorf-Astoria is the only tall building on the east of Jefferson-Ave. The view from the rooms must me amazing.;)

Now we are in the north of downtown. At the corner with the "New Memphis Mall" is one of the biggest traffic junctions of New Memphis. Thousands of cars are passing this junction on the end of Jefferson-Ave daily. In this picture you can also see the two biggest city parks.

Let's move a bit to the west. On the northern and western ends of downtown lots of big apartment highrisers grew. They are a big part of New Memphis' 700'000 inhabitants. Next to the residental highrisers is the court of the city and another nice little city park.

In your update long long time ago, there were numerous amounts of warehouses that all looked different. Where did you get so much? I searched STEX and LEX but couldn't find them. I really need them for my industrial park. Say, where did you get them?

Cyclone1001: Thanks. Good question, it absolutely takes a lot of practice and time to improve your skills. I'm now playing for about 7 years, and built about 10 regions so far. Some of them turned out to be catastrophic. Once I tried to build an arabian city like Dubai, but it was terrible... :D I guess you need alot of inspiration from other players and googleearth.;) Also always be "up to date" with the newest Lots and Bats. And sometimes the game just gives you limits and you can't really play it the way you want.
Ecoba: Thanks. I agree with you, the euro ashpalt texture really makes it look much more realistic. I'm really enjoying it myself. :) ;D

cubby420: Thanks. I didn't especially create these Lots to match with the euro-asphalt texture mod. There is a mod available on the german SimForum, which changes neraly all the white Maxis ground textures to euro asphalt textures. It actually works quiet well in my region. A very nice little toy nonetheless. Just downloaded and definitely gonna try it out soon.
I love how the sidewalk mod matches with all the base textures in the lots. (Yes I read the previous comments) For a moment there I thought you had to relot all those buildings! :P
EDIT: Thx for the help but I couldn't find any LBT-warehouses &mmm, I was talking about the long one in the last picture and the ones with JES props on them.

Today I'm gonna show you an industrial area from the city of Lyndhurst. The city is a suburb of "New Memphis". It's located in the east of downtown. Most of the people are poor so there are a lot of ghetto-areas and dirty industrial areas. The city has the biggest railyard in the whole Arlington Bay area, so there's quiet alot of work to do.
I'm now only showing the railyard area and in the next update some more industry and residental areas.
Please remember this is an older city so there is no NWM, because I hadn't enough time (and energy) to rebuild all the roads.

paul 999: Thanks. Why not? It's alot easier to use and more realistic in urban areas than the RHW. RHW is only good in rural areas IMO, and Arlington Bay Area is pretty much urban. ;)

One question: The large lots (maybe 8x8 or 9x9 even) at the top of the first pic...where can I find those? Those are definitely maxis buildings but the layout is much more realistic.

I second that. As much as I love the RHW, it still takes way too much room to fit properly in a high density urban core. Plus we wouldn't want not being able to use those wonderful SFBT filler lots, would we?
(However, I just used the RHW to build sort of a surrounding ring to a mid-size city, less tightly packed, of 35000 people, and it fits right in).

Excellent update! The layout is fantastic, though I think that ave x ave intersection in pic 3 could be a candidate for some 'TuLEP'ifcation $%Grinno$% - that intersection would drive me nuts! The highway fence barrier is perfect; I've never seen it before. Plus your medians...I must have. This update was like a candyshop of stuff I want I guess ::)

I'm currently building on some suburbs and the problem is that my CO$$ /CO$$$ demand are very high, but who likes skyscrappers in the suburbs huh? Does anybody know some buildings (just CO$$ and CO$$$) that would fit into a suburban area? It should probably be a "modern" office-building but not a skyscraper. I'd be very grateful for some help;)

I'm struggeling with exactly the same problem. There are just not enough of those buildings.
The Civic Offices, TiFlo suggested are very good. Simgoober also made some suburban offices: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=4474
They fit very well in north american suburbs and offer a decent amount of jobs.
Some of ill tonsko's (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?p=files&keyword=ill%20tonkso&view=all) buildings on the STEX might fit the bill. I seem to remember him having lots of low-rise commercial offices in his repertoire. It is very hard to find something in this category; a good batter could make a name for him or herself filling this niche ;D
Always a pleasure to visit Arlington Bay, you have such vivid and strong images. Both of your last updates from the rail yards and from the low wealth areas are exceptionally well done.

Very accurate suburban layout. The golf course and cemetery are great additions and really add some interest where there may not have been much to begin with. Where did you get that huge Carrefour building?
Your grid with all the different types of NWM, Roads and streets is massive. I like it.
Does anyone happen to know what the two industrial buildings in the lower right corner of the last pic are? The one with the solar panels on the roof and the L shaped one with the round logo?
The L shaped industrial is Ouellette Electronics (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21844) from the prolific jasoncw (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?p=files&keyword=jasoncw&view=all) on ST. One of the best batters around in my opinion. I think the other one your looking for is a Simgoober industrial, though I'm not sure which.
The building with the solar panels on the roof is indeed from Simgoober, I believe it's one of his "Fukitol" HT industrial lots.

You'll only have to take some time to go through his collection. ;D
Wow, the developed land in that region is massive! You've certainly put a lot of work into it. Those suburbs look great and so does that golf course! The whole region is very nice and also very green. :P I also love how you made the inner-city look in your previous update. Very dilapidated and poor. Hey guys, it's been a long time since my last update. I'm actually very busy in real life, studying hard, so simcity wasn't first priority. ;) But today I had the time to take a few pictures of "Matlock Heights", a urban-suburban city near "New Memphis". The city is caracterized by a lot of different neighbourhoods. There is at the one side the rich suburban neighbourhoods with their golf courses and parks, and on the other side of the freeway there is one of the biggest "ghettos" in the bay-area. Also the "New Memphis Icicles" play in the brandnew Toyota-Center in "Matlock Heights".

First of all a quick overview. You can see the area where the less-fortunate live. However in the last few years, some luxury apartement-buildings were built next to the freeway, probably because of Matlock Height's great traffic system and the closeness to New Memphis' downtown area.

Boy I've been waiting for another update form you for a long time! Nice development. Your colors are so crisp and clean. Plus, this update serves as a great ad for that Toyota Center building on the stex...it just looks so real.

cubby420: Thank you. The Toyota-Center is indeed a very nice bat, it's was in my PlugIn folder for years and I never used it :P. I guess that's the problem with the big stadium, you normally just use them once.

cubby420: Thanks.:) I indeed had a few problem with the NWM at first, but I'm getting used to it by now. :) It's really a great contribution to the NAM. I'm actually trying to use the divided road more in the residental areas.;)

We move on to "Rutherford Beach" a suburb in the east of "New Memphis". The city is one of very few large tiles. It's totally covered with suburbs... :D Honestly most parts of the suburbs aren't that great to watch, I had some problems with unemployed people and the demands. &mmm But "Rutherford Beach" hosts one of the biggest universities in the region, I think that's worth a glimpse. ;)
First a huge overlooking picture. You can see the whole campus and all sport facilities. Also some suburban offices have developped near the campus, must be an attractive area hehe :). (I needed to compensate alot of commercial demand) There is a cemetary and a big elementary school near the campus aswell.

cubby: Thank you. It wasn't easy to find some CO$$ and CO$$$ buildings that fit in my suburban areas. But I think by now I pretty much have them all. :D The wide NWM avenues are very useful for the american-layout too. I'm thinking about using the wide street curves for some "outer-suburb-neighbourhoods". I have to practice on the transition between city and rural areas anyway, that's one of my weaknesses.

Good stuff bud. Love the low wealth diversity. This are would look great with a big dirty elevated line cutting through it ;) Maybe I think that because I see areas so much like this every day.
On a side note, I think that goofyguytpa (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?p=files&keyword=goofyguytpa&view=all) never gets enough credit for being the most prolific creator of American urban grit and grime for sc4 with the arguable exception of Marcszar. Its crazy how much diversity his buildings add to the style set.

Hey guys. I have a question about the DarkNite Mod. I wanted to take some pictures of downtown by night, so I downloaded Simfox' darknite mod. But apparently I already downloaded a couple of "maxisnight" buildings, and they look ridiculous with the new mod. Now my question: "Can I download the darknite building and just change the model, and the building will change to darknite, or do I have to rebuild and replop all these buildings afterwards?"

for your question, I think the darknite buildings don't take the ID of former builing so you need to re-plop the LOTs ::)

nedalezz: Thank you very much. The picture's quality will even go up soon ;) I only realized yesterday, that I loose alot of details by squeezing the pictures from 1920x1200 to 1024x640. So I will cut out the best piece of each picture, and give you a more detailled look at the cities. Of course I will still show you some overview pictures aswell. ;) Anyway, this update is still not "ingame resolution", but I hope you will still like it.
TiFlo: The residental areas and buildings are all grown naturally, I don't use any landmarks there to plopp residental areas. In the commercial and industrial areas I plop from time to time. I normally let everything grow first and then after a couple of times of bulldozing I plop buildings that would fit in better - especially corner-lots are very hard to grow, so they are mostly plopped. ;) I want to add that it's very important to me, not to "cheat" with plopping buildings, and keep the game playable and realistic. That means I only plop if there's a demand for this kind of building. :)

I don't know if I already told you once, but I reabuilt the hole downtown-map. I didn't really like it before, the downtown itself was quite nice but the surroundings weren't. I spent half an eternity on this map, especially because I set every single buildings that grew under "monument protection" (I hope it's called so in the english version). This map alone has about 900.000 inhabitants on it, the hole New Memphis metropolitan area is now over 1.5 Mio.
For today I have to pictures prepared for you, a huge overview (which is sadly way to big to show here directly :P ) and an overview of the norther part of the new port.

The crossing of 6th Avenue and Liberty Blvd. is one of the busiest corners in New Memphis. There are alot of offices here and also the old Marriot Hotel (white building with red entrance).

The old stadium is still up to date, but was to small for the Giants growing fanbase, so they built the huge new Giants stadium at 6th Ave.

The end of todays tour. Jefferson Expy. crosses the Giants Pkwy. Probably not the most treasured place to live in these apartments. Mothers must watch their kids playing in the backyard, so they don't walk on the pkwy.

There are so many nice place to show in such a crowded city, so I thought why not give it a bit more structure and start another tour. This time it's gonna be a tour on the canals of New Memphis.

First of all an overview. New Memphis river cuts right through downtown, of course that's not its natural flow. The city planners have canalized it and given the river a totally different way.
Originally the river was flowing from number 3. to 9. and 10. but as the city was building a big central park with a pond they needed an inflow, so they created the New Memphis river canal through downtown. N
owadays most people are thankful for this huge project, because it gives the city some caracter and recreational space.

The river passes the New Memphis turnpike. Dense urban developpement begins here, on the other side of the turnpike the river isn't canalized as much as in downtown area.

Downtown is mostly commercial buildings, most of the inhabitants live in smaller apartements around downtown. There are currently 900'000 people alone on this map! here you can see the canal crossing the Park Ave.

The national history museum is located between New Memphis river, Metropolitan Ave., Huntington Ave. and 6th Ave.
Lots of big companies would like to build some huge skyscrappers here, but the government decided to keep the museum as it is, to create some open space in a very dense area.
As you can see are some boardwalks along the river. They are very popular and also very crowded on weekends.

5th Ave. marks a very abrupt end of downtown area. The biggest and tallest skyscrappers were built along 5th Ave. between Liberty Blvd. and Central Ave.

Going down the eastern part of New Memphis river we arrive the waterfront. A couple of years ago the city spent alot of money renovationg the cities waterfront along Bay Ave..
There are alot of hotels along the waterfront, because of the extraordinary view on the bay bridge and the bay itself.

A little bit up the river a very nice combination of old and new buildings in New Memphis. The Waldorf Astoria one of the most prestigious hotels in the world combined with some new commerical highrisers.

Today I show you some pictures from central park in New Memphis. The park is located between Liberty Blvd. in the north and Metropolitan Ave. in the south. Also 5th and 4th Ave. were built along central park. The area around central park is very expensive as you can imagine. :D There are alot of office buildings and a couple of luxury-apartments for the rich. North of central park are a few highrisers for the less fortunate aswell. North of the park are generally alot of low and midwealth residental areas.

There are also some of the oldest buildings of New Memphis located in the park area. In this picture you can see St. Patricks library, which is nowadays a museum.
The rents of buildings along Metropolitan Ave. overlooking central park are some of the worlds highest.

Central park lake with the bridge of Liberty Blvd. There's a rental station for boats on 5th Ave. and heavily used as you can see.

Today we're gonna pay a visit to Elmont, a very urban part of New Memphis' metropolitan area.

First of all an overview. You can see the western parts of downtown New Memphis on the right, going over into Elmont on the left.

South of Elmont are parts of New Memphis' huge container port. Also you can see the New Memphis turnpike going underneath Elmont.

As you can see, Park Ave. marks a very abrupt ending of the downtown area going over into apartment buildings. The New Memphis turnpike was built right underneath Elmont and the Freedom Park. It makes the neighbourhood much more livable and attractiv. Even with 3 big arteries from west to east (Lauretton Pkwy., BAy Ave., Elmont Blvd.)

On the top you can see the old townhall of Elmont, once also used as townhall for New Memphis. Elmont is going through a real boom in the last few years, mostly because young people wanting to live in an urban and living city.

And finally the Freedom Park. The park was build just a couple of years ago, to give some more greenery to the city and make it more livable. A couple of old aprtment buildings had to be demolished, in order to give Elmont some diversity.

Today we will visit the "dirty" part of New Memphis. To be more specific the port and industrial areas in the west. As you have already seen New Memphis has a new and huge container port. You will only see some close-ups here, maybe I have an overview of the whole area for you later (it's enormous and includes more maps). There are also lots of big industrial areas in New Memphis, most of them near the port area of course. I used Diamonds 9x8 lots often, they just look great and way better than alot of smaller lots could look.

A busy intersection. There is alot of traffic on the airport-expressway because there is no actual highway from New Memphis to the suburbs in the very east. As you can see I tried to bring some smooth curves into the residental street-grid, to make the neighbourhoods out there look more "modern", but I'm not totally satisfied with the result, Simcity is just made to be in a grid system. ;D

We have arrived at the old terminal C. As you will see later in an overview, it's location is not practical (traffic-wise) to a modern airport anymore, so it's already nearly shutdown. Easy-jet is one of the only airlines left here, benefitting from low fees at terminal C.

Incredible, beautiful city. I have yet to master the park building. So much inspiration and so many great buildings! I wish I could get marcszar's buildings to grow up in nice rows like you. I guess that takes a lot of time and bulldozing.
Thanks for the nice comments lately. I was really busy for the last few weeks, so I didn't have any time to update here. I have to study alot, it's exam time :D, and I changed to a new mac-computer. Right now I don't have Simcity installed anymore, I will take a look, how SC works on mac in my holidays in a couple of weeks. Still I have a lot of already taken pictures that I want to show you. So it's not over here even if there's been a little break.
