Title: Nardo's real life pictures
Post by: Nardo69 on May 24, 2009, 04:37:14 AM
Warning 1: contents rather big pictures that may take some time to load!

Warning 2: you might be astonished but beneath railway and / in Sc4 there are some other things I am interested in  :D

Something I do love in May is the bloom of rhododendron and azalea. Not far away from the place where I am now a rather big gardener has made a quite well known rhododendron garden and each year there is a rhododendron party there - nothing big some coffee'n'cake, beer (obviously) and sausage, of course you can buy plants all over the weekend ...

...  and you can make a nice walk through this rhododendron garden. It is wonderful as you may see on my pics; it is just a pity that I cannot give you the smell of the flowers and blossoms there ...

Beautiful pictures, Bernhard. Pink and orange together, you would think it would look awful, but I have the same combination in my garden with azaleas, and I love seeing these two colours combined every spring.

Absolutely superb pictures.  The first is the best.
This year my garden will most likely not look its best as I juust moved into the house and have many other projects.  But next year I hope to amaze my neighbours with my green thumb.

I should post here more often I guess ... Quite exactly one year after the initial post here is my first update in the RL picture section.

Right at the moment there is the "[urlhttp://www.sailtraininginternational.org/events/2010-sail-training-international-events/historical-seas-tall-ships-regatta]Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta 2010[/url]". Quite a lot of big sail ships race here in the Aegean and Marmara sea. This weekend they landed at the international harbor of Karaköy in Istanbul where they could be visited.
It was the first time ever I went there as this area is international ground like in big airports and as such off limits for locals.

Here are some impressions from today. I hope to be able to make some more photos tomorrow when the ships leave Istanbul for the next race.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg69.imageshack.us%2Fimg69%2F397%2Fsailboat1o.jpg&hash=0850455feb65eecd3b2f4a200c51d24fa49e80e1)
The "MIR" (Russia), "Shabab Oman" (Oman), "Dewaruci" (Indonesia) and "Dar Mlodziezy" (Poland) at the quai of Karaköy, Istanbul

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F3359%2Fsailboat3.jpg&hash=1d73a8c830c819ceb60aa2a032c5c699b26b92c2)
The russian sail ship "MIR"

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg191.imageshack.us%2Fimg191%2F2184%2Fsailboat2.jpg&hash=63a97e0541d899760a7badf735ec955bc54a4048)
The polish sail ship "DAR MLODZIEZY" The "DAR MLODZIEZY" and the "MIR" are sister ships, the "DAR MLODZIEZY" ist the first and the "MIR" the third of a series of five sail ships.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F4937%2Fsailboat4.jpg&hash=fc5726f1787396a0135226257704e7616a96fd7f)
The German sail ship "Alexander von Humboldt" which was the first in a long row of sail ships was the oldest ship to be seen in Karaköy this weekend.

If there is some interest I may show some more pictures. Also, I hope to make some pictures of the ships under sail when they leave tomorrow.

Have fun!

Nice pics Nardo. Personally, I love anything to do with Tall Ships.. the history, the craftsmanship, the beauty. We recently had the Russian tall ship: Kruzenshtern berth in Vancouver carrying the Sochi 2014 flag during the 2010 Olympics. Seeing that giant monster was quite the treat.

Great images of the tall ships there....they normally come into Liverpool but I haven't heard anything of them this year.

Are you on Flickr out of interest?
Title: Railways?!?
Post by: Nardo69 on January 15, 2011, 01:16:16 PM
An interesting thing about the TCDD (Turkish railways) is that its network is separated in three parts:

These three networks are connected by railway ferries on the Bosporus and the Marmara Sea between Sirkeci and Haydarpasa and the ferries on the Van Lake. However there is the tunnel project in Istanbul which will finish the ferry connection there so if you want to see them it's time to plan a trip to Istanbul - soon!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F901a007853c32804e308a70165f6779e.jpg&hash=60499dc6c4c4b9f437d7eafe274e0208643d3f9e) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Seeing their front makes it a bit difficult to separate them from the standard car ferries Sirkeci - Harem which ran almost parallel to the railway ferries.

Seen from the side passing at Topkapi Palace ...

and at Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia they are easily to be recognized as their load is higher than cars as well as railway ferries have only one bridges ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb4f27108d5924c5b5e0257654079e3fb.jpg&hash=86dcd96184c6be03d36d9f5c6afdbe7d1df56add) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

... while car ferries have two bridges.

Have fun.

Istanbul is such a beautiful (and dense, especially in the old parts, like Sultanahmet) city, I visited there last summer. Full of historical beautiful mosques, palaces, streets and other buildings, and a great atmosphere too.  :) One of my favourite cities where have I ever been, even though I always say that after being somewhere.  ;D

Didn't use the railways though, never left the city and the local train system isn't very useful for a tourist. That might change with the Marmaray Project, though. Trams, metros and ferries were enough, I never use taxis unless there is no other way to get to your destination.
Title: Nardo's real life pictures: An Afternoon at Haydarpasha Station Part 1 of 3
Post by: Nardo69 on May 23, 2011, 06:43:08 AM
On Saturday I received the DSLR back from the repair of the memory card slut that I got from my father's heritage. So I decided to make a walk to find a suitable motive to get used to the DSLR - Haydarpasha station!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg221.imageshack.us%2Fimg221%2F976%2Fimage01sp.jpg&hash=42c25cf81fecaf0d3a5f87b0cbf05fee1bba256c) (http://img823.imageshack.us/i/image01wf.jpg/)
The railway station head with the depot and some old  banliö treni (the railway metro)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg534.imageshack.us%2Fimg534%2F111%2Fimage02s.jpg&hash=0bfc7a13622d182c4229acc58dc83cc857d5de17) (http://img200.imageshack.us/i/image02ea.jpg/)
Some years ago there was a truck under that green thingie - I think it was for cleaning the rolling stock.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg714.imageshack.us%2Fimg714%2F563%2Fimage03sg.jpg&hash=c1875b8de0f3fe1fe37b071b01afa43177219530) (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/image03qz.jpg/)
A small manoeuvre diesel pushed and pulled some cars while a banliö treni was about to arrive at Haydarpasha.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F6750%2Fimage04sw.jpg&hash=11409f318d803a7105945248541306637b7ee8cf) (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/image04x.jpg/)
Another one was leaving mostly at the same moment passing the electric locos on the waiting tracks.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg546.imageshack.us%2Fimg546%2F7343%2Fimage05s.jpg&hash=7ed7051b1e77bbe77ed75e3a81971a93b6149fc7) (http://img812.imageshack.us/i/image05vx.jpg/)
Some seconds later they passed each others.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg850.imageshack.us%2Fimg850%2F9477%2Fimage06s.jpg&hash=11ca79792c4b0936e8fcb36aacbc2b80973aab61) (http://img228.imageshack.us/i/image06m.jpg/)
While the banliö treni entered the station a read DE24 Diesel started to move from the depot to the harbour tracks. Diesel locos pulling trains are not so often to be seen in Haydarpasa as the two railway lines at Istanbul (one on the Asian, one on the European side) are electrified.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg228.imageshack.us%2Fimg228%2F347%2Fimage07s.jpg&hash=779c0ecc2b0eff127b1db701f9118058c2922a15) (http://img706.imageshack.us/i/image07sj.jpg/)
All these pictures were made on a street bridge that crosses the station head of Haydarpasa station. Due to the traffic on that one way road I hardly catched the loco on the other side ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F8013%2Fimage08s.jpg&hash=74436614c864c51f040c7c5530b36353b9bb147e) (http://img585.imageshack.us/i/image08p.jpg/)
No, no graffitti. Interesting thing though that I cannot remember seeing trains with graffitti here in Istanbul ..

Next part will be inside the station so stay tuned. ;) Oh, and each picture contains a link to the same picture with a higher resolution ... ;)

Not much traffic around here - maybe we can change that a bit with part 2? ;)

An Adapazari Ekspresi is waiting for departure. They are the only trains except Express trains that use cars and are not mototrains in Haydarpasha.

And the Diesel Loco has reappeared from the harbour tracks. The red one on the left pulls trains while the blue one on the right side is a shunting Diesel.

That was part 2. Have fun!

Very interesting pictures. I wonder what importance railway has in Turkey. Is it heavily used or dying out?
Title: Nardo's real life pictures: An Afternoon at Haydarpasha Station Part 3 of 3
Post by: Nardo69 on May 24, 2011, 03:58:59 AM
@RickD: Depends on. Most railway lines are single track, non-electrified, with no or old and badly maintained mechanical signal towers. Because of this they are mainly used by freight trains with no more than 2-3 passenger trains per day given that they aren't cancel due to bad acceptance as they are slow - 40-60 km/h as maximum speed.
If you love oldfashioned railways it's paradise (compared with 20-30 years the main difference is that the steam engines have been replaced by Diesels) but halfway modern passenger traffic is almost impossible.

The exceptions are the commuter lines in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir (haven't been there, though), Adana-Mersin and the main line between Istanbul and Ankara (obviously). Right now they are installing a High Speed Train network - at least they try to do so. Finished is Eskisehir - Ankara, Konya - Ankara is under construction (there hasn't been a direct railway connection before). Let's see how it all looks like in 10 years - continuity or maintenance are not really typical for Turkey ...

Anyway - ready for the final third part? Here it comes:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg41.imageshack.us%2Fimg41%2F7313%2Fimage19sc.jpg&hash=93b941f145bea7c5367b2d4016651535dbda8b19) (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/image19nz.jpg/)
Back to the Diesel where we stopped last time. This is a DE24000, a french construction. Turkey bought all patents and licenses of this type in order to replace the steam engines (even though steam stayed in Turkey until the nineties). After almost 40 years in service they are replaced at the moment by a GM type - the DE 33000.
But as you can see - light conditions aren't the best at afternoons so I looked around for a better place.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg685.imageshack.us%2Fimg685%2F4481%2Fimage20s.jpg&hash=9af91facbd35027bd5a976a926550cf31137f5d2) (http://img861.imageshack.us/i/image20q.jpg/)
A E43000 in between cars. There are two Ekspres treni waiting for departure in some hours on the same track. Because of this the engine for the second one is placed in between to supply the cars with energy (air conditioning!)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg847.imageshack.us%2Fimg847%2F6748%2Fimage21s.jpg&hash=24a6c11929922bf9db194e151b63cecffdcfabd8) (http://img857.imageshack.us/i/image21j.jpg/)
While I was looking for a good spot to take my photograhs the Adapazari Ekspresi departed so I could only take this "emergency shoot" - gee, I wish I took that 80-200mm tele with me ... :(

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg687.imageshack.us%2Fimg687%2F2295%2Fimage22sf.jpg&hash=226e37c3b565404624c5dfd7ba3ddc21abda8276) (http://img861.imageshack.us/i/image22y.jpg/)
When I got back to the Diesel the machinist showed me that he would leave the station immediately.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg146.imageshack.us%2Fimg146%2F85%2Fimage23sr.jpg&hash=5015325a24329e7b420e15c9eb47584fc0b3b936) (http://img101.imageshack.us/i/image23gl.jpg/)
So here it goes. The sound was nice. :)

This was the first time I could take a photograph of a Diesel pulling a (freight) train in Haydarpasa as the line to Ankara is electrified.

Remember the fire of Haydarpasa station some month ago? It destroyed the roof of the center wing that has been repaired since then. The original roof looked like the roof of the side wing to the left.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg64.imageshack.us%2Fimg64%2F8445%2Fimage26sx.jpg&hash=488ed098ff76a218cf72d71765c13f9b0aeb744f) (http://img220.imageshack.us/i/image26y.jpg/)
Fortunately the wonderful waiting room of Haydarpasa hasn't been damaged. Isn't it wonderful?

The interior of this train station reminds me the interior of the Soviet subway stations. Truly classic museums :)

Title: Nardo's real life pictures: At the Iron Bridge
Post by: Nardo69 on May 28, 2011, 02:41:22 PM
Right now I am staying at the house of my mother-in-law in Adana that is rather close to the TCDD railway line and main station. The railway line that passes Adana isn't very scenic or spectacular IMHO except the old Bridge over the Ceylan river  that had been erected by German Engineers - Haydarpasha is the beginning of the Baghdad railway, Adana a stop at the Baghdad railway ;)
And it has become kind of a tradition for me to escape from my Turkish family to the bridge and taking pictures of the train there. The following pictures are made yesterday and today.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg856.imageshack.us%2Fimg856%2F3133%2Fimage01sk.jpg&hash=896a9dc34c386163aba11696e903b9bb00028fb1) (http://img804.imageshack.us/i/image01.jpg/)
The Demir Köprüsü - the Iron Bridge. The bridge is single tracked while the railway line before and after has been double tracked until Incirlik. The second track however isn't used anymore for years.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg832.imageshack.us%2Fimg832%2F111%2Fimage02s.jpg&hash=6d2dc4b573fc6a94e3469c7333578ceb031dc583) (http://img838.imageshack.us/i/image02c.jpg/)
Since my last visit here more than half a year ago some things changed. The useless "No Trespassing" sign next to the bridge has been renewed and the rails have been welded since then. The rails however are still the same as well as the sleepers as you can see at this absolutely gorgeous and perfect working sleeper ...  %wrd

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg89.imageshack.us%2Fimg89%2F7061%2Fimage03s.jpg&hash=cebeab301cb26e39cd43594a3d015ae197559876) (http://img802.imageshack.us/i/image03o.jpg/)
Yesterday I was out of luck, within one hour only one freight train - usually there is one train here every 20-25 minutes ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg135.imageshack.us%2Fimg135%2F3360%2Fimage04s.jpg&hash=f1f0e34c2779c420a1f7cee8739754c737f1b749) (http://img42.imageshack.us/i/image04fq.jpg/)
... however the train had two engines - a DE 33 and a DE 24 whereas the DE 24 wasn't working obviously.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg851.imageshack.us%2Fimg851%2F7343%2Fimage05s.jpg&hash=337c394f29bbdebae8c5e828f2086570be6bde08) (http://img41.imageshack.us/i/image05qt.jpg/)

Then the family ties were calling me ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg171.imageshack.us%2Fimg171%2F138%2Fimage07sj.jpg&hash=bf8fa32396afeaa5335cbcedca24690303251871) (http://img7.imageshack.us/i/image07ow.jpg/)
While I was preparing the video camera this evening the first freight train came from Incirlik.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg684.imageshack.us%2Fimg684%2F8013%2Fimage08s.jpg&hash=5b263e14821f5340532e8d4d96b948a05884a2c9) (http://img863.imageshack.us/i/image08.jpg/)

I took a video from the train in the other direction hence I could take only this presentable picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg651.imageshack.us%2Fimg651%2F6464%2Fimage11sx.jpg&hash=ced92c26e0cbf34cc0b0c490c3b1b7f3b9df0314) (http://img805.imageshack.us/i/image11z.jpg/)
Exactly here I wanted to take a video of the only Ekspres train on that railway line. Anything was perfect but some 8 to 12 year old boys came to me, asked me for cigarettes (I don't smoke nor would I give some of them to children!) Then they become more and more and when they were finally ten of them these small rats became "brave" and began to throw stones to me! Sometimes it's good that I am not good at all at throwing stones otherwise ...  :angrymore:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg542.imageshack%2Fimg542%2F6280%2Fimage12s.jpg&hash=43ac4dbf2cb2b58e7f8a96cbcf40726b198a6dc7) (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/image12vf.jpg/)
After a while I had to leave to protect me and my camera - just when the Firat Ekspresi from Malatya arrived!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg90.imageshack.us%2Fimg90%2F7109%2Fimage13s.jpg&hash=703c1af438ac0f881bc700f7d3488b9151739ae3) (http://img715.imageshack.us/i/image13vl.jpg/)
You can see some of those §$%&@ to the left of the Diesel loco...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg687.imageshack.us%2Fimg687%2F4995%2Fimage14sl.jpg&hash=dee741bda8fe4e93a0764eb0f05f07d42556ffe6) (http://img844.imageshack.us/i/image14h.jpg/)
This passenger train left Adana right after the Express train. I could only take this emergence shoot because these little rats carried stones over the bridge in order to throw them at me!

For the first time since 2003 I don't know if I will go to the bridge again. But I do have some photos of Adana station that I might show here - if you want to see them... ;)

Have fun!

@RickD: The Turkish trains are interesting - mostly because the only change in the last 60 years was the replacement of the steam engines by diesel locos ...
And yes, idiots are to be found everywhere but until now I thought these stone-throwing were to be found in the more eastern parts of Turkey ...  &sly

@Terring7: By now I only visited Crete. However for years my wife and me planned a trip to Thessaloniki (Selanik) as her family moved from there to Turkey during the population change between Greece and Turkey after WWI.
But each time we planned to do so something else didn't let us make the trip and when finally everything was fine all international trains from and to Greece were canceled ...   :'(

Anyway on my from the city to my monster ... err ... mother-in-law as I passed at the Iron bridge a freight train just left Adana. Because of those rats I only had my small digital camera with me so don't expect anything sensational but the sound was not as bad as I feared ... :

Title: Nardo's real life pictures: An Evening at Pozanti
Post by: Nardo69 on June 02, 2011, 05:13:35 AM
I planned to go on with Adana Gar but then I found this video I made last year in September in the Toros Mountains. I had been there with my wife, her mother and her sister who aren't quite what you could describe as railway fans ... But after I got on their nerves for one whole day ;D  we finally reached the small railway station of Pozanti at the railway line (Adana/Mersin-) Yenice - Ulukisla (-Konya/Nigde) in the mountains. The women found some berries to collect so I had my time to enjoy that station in the last daylight where time seemed to stand still - except for the rolling stock. Gee - how would I love to see a steam loco going up the pass there!

The old engine shed. I couldn't take a shoot of the entry signal - old semaphore of German type. We are here at the Baghdad railway!

Today I had to play chauffeur twice. And the nostalgic steam train of the UEF would go from Ettlingen to Bad Herrenalb in the lovely Alb valley. And the time of my chauffeur service was very compatible to the steam train.

Sooo .....  ()stsfd()

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg696.imageshack.us%2Fimg696%2F7062%2Fpict6378.jpg&hash=3d48f140be7b4d0b9cc2be7e8a78faa853293e49) (http://img84.imageshack.us/i/pict6378.jpg/)

The noon train to Bad Herrenalb in the ramp behind Marxzell. Maybe my best shot today.

The enginge is 50 2740, a 2-10-0 class 50 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRB_Class_50) freight engine which was one of the best and most universal steam engines at all. Together with its simplified sister, the "Kriegslok" class 52 it was built in about 10.000 pcs and was used all over Europe untill the end of the steam area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg37.imageshack.us%2Fimg37%2F8564%2Fpict6379.jpg&hash=58fcba01d43f87ec087dadba557e902de352f5ea) (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/pict6379.jpg/)

Well, vegetation next to railways has heavily increased in the last 30 years. It was hard to find a suitable place for a video shoot even though this is my home here ...
And the area to the left and the right of the creek Alb in the middle of the valley is secured by barb wire!  >:(

Some great motives and image compsition. The photo with the flower and wild water in the background has something fascinating. I don't know why but I like looking at it.

Oh, and I HATE spiders.  ::) Anyway, the picture with the spider in the leaves is great, too.

Hi Nardo,
really nice pics, i love this little spider in its net  :). Also cool: the pics from AVG-tram and these steamer pics. In one of my books one of these machines (i think its a 52) was photographed in Turkey, don´t know the class, but as an engine of the TCCD in the middle 70ies.

Hello Alltogether!

I got some more train pics for you. Or Stadtbahn, in Karlsruhe and its environment a mix of tramway and railway. I had to wait a little bit in Ettlingen Stadt for my tramway home, so I played a little bit with my small digicam. Thanks to Capture One I could reduce the image noice to a tolerable amount.

@RickD: Thanks! I think the flower in front of the water somehow hits everyone's romantic sense ... ;)

@art128: Well, my wife acts exactly as you do!  :D But as long as they are only normal middle-european spiders, not too big, mostly not poisonous, I don't have a problem with them.

@kelis: That's the northern Black Forrest, my home and my inspiration for Urland ... ;)

@wallasey: Thanks!

@eufl: Hope you like today's AVG-Tram pics, too! ;)
The class 52 was running in Turkey as TCDD class 56.5 until middle of the nineties, as far as I know there's one of them still active somewhere at Konya.
BTW: AFAIK these class 52 engines were a present of Hitler to Inönü, the president that followed Atatürk after 1937 in order to get an ally ...   :-X

Hi Nardo,
i didn´t knew anything about the way this machine made its way to Turkey. Thanks, it´s some total new information to me!, I´ve only seen these pics of this steamengine and yeah, it was Konya. I´m not sure, but is this a line more for goods and masstransports than passenger-traffic? And i know the same engine for 1524mm in the former Sovietunion. Maybe it´s the most international steamengine ever  :D.
Your pictures from the Albtalbahn: perfect shots! Your on the way to become a photographing profi!   &apls The nightlightning is very athmospheric. But i must confess: mostly i love the Albtalbahn in the years before i knew anything about this little big company, with its mallets and electric locomotives and trains on narrow gauge.
And at the end: is this old hall the former hall of BadenBaden? Wunderfull construction, isn´t it?

Well, the soviets took quite some to Russia, turned them into 1524mm, turned them back to 1435mm standard gauge and sold them to several East European countries when the steam area was finished there in 1959.
And well, a lot more than 6000 engines were build between 1942 and 1949 - noone knows exactly but the 52 surely was the most build and most spread steam engine at all. It is even a predecessor of the famous chinese QJ.

The more interesting part of the Albtalbahn was the Kleinbahn Ittersbach-Pforzheim (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleinbahn_Pforzheim-Ittersbach) which was cancelled in 1968. Unfortunately it is hard to find pictures of both the narrow gauge Albtalbahn as well as (and even more difficult) for the Kleinbahn Ittersbach-Pforzheim.

Another one:

I like to watch them with a solid glass between me and them, I wouldn't like to meet them IRL though ...  :-[

Hi,
You did not know, didn´t You? I love fishes and aquariums and had some of them years ago  &ops  (now only two evil fisheating cats  ;D). Perfect still of a piranya, and yeah, much better to have some glass between You and the fish  :D. It´s very difficult to make some photo without any reflections.  &apls
What i didn´t knew was the fact, that chinese engineers "copied" the 52class for their own purposes.
Good pics of the Kleinbahn Pforzheim-Ittersbach also as from Albtalbahn i found in these great books: "Deutsche Klein und Privatbahnen" from Zeunert-Verlag. Unfortunatly it´s not easy to get them now. Best is: there are track plans within (in the updated version of 2001).
And for now i said enough and have to end with the same You say every time: take care, my friend and make backups!

@eufl: Hehe, I had some tanks, too, some years ago. Maybe, if I get a good job ...

I have some literature of the AVG and the Kleinbahn Ittersbach-Pforzheim, the official book from the AVG and a small booklet printed when the railway line came back to Ittersbach in 1975 which is my worthiest source of old pictures. ;)

Speaking of that I'd like to tell you that I made some shoots today around Ittersbach where AVG and Kleinbahn met. Interested? Well, then ... ;)

But before a small historic abstract:

Untill 1965 Ittersbach was connected to the railway world by two electrified narrow gauge railway lines:

the AVG which was connected to and owned by the tramway network of Karlsruhe and the Kleinbahn Ittersbach-Pforzheim which was connected to and owned by the Tramway of Pforzheim.

Untill 1965 the AVG changed the gauge of all narrow gauge lines to 1435 standard gauge in order to connect them seamingless to the tramway network in Karlsruhe which always was built in 1435mm standart gauge.

The last line was Busenbach - Langensteinbach - Ittersbach. However only the part Busenbach-Langensteinbach was reopened in standart gauge while the part Langensteinbach-Ittersbach was closed.

In 1966 the tramway network of Pforzheim was closed and the Kleinbahn survived it only for two years untill the end came in 1968 due to bad track conditions. Interesting facts: just days before the very end a tornado destroyed a big part of the electric line so that the farewell train could only go on a small part of the line.
In the meanwhile buses between Langensteinbach and Ittersbach became that crowded that a new railway line was built from Langensteinbach to Ittersbach which lasts until today.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg854.imageshack.us%2Fimg854%2F1648%2Fpict9331s.jpg&hash=3dec15e92cb797dbb9a7c15ff93e95bb45c9818b) (http://img580.imageshack.us/i/pict9331.jpg/)

A motorcar is heading to Ittersbach from the direction of Langensteinbach.
The ramp in the background leads to the bridge over the main road which is the highest point of that railway line.

It was turned in the terminal loop of Ittersbach and went back to where it came from.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg607.imageshack.us%2Fimg607%2F8625%2Fpict9348s.jpg&hash=b4da0ac43e363c4869504e4d8523ba5239680c7d) (http://img813.imageshack.us/i/pict9348.jpg/)

Here you can see three relicts of the former Kleinbahn Ittersbach-Pforzheim:

Cool pictures, especially the one of the ramp! It looks so unbelievable steep! :o
And i wonder: are these engines on Your pics (i don´t know the right word) "Zweirichtungstriebwagen"? It seems they have two control stands, but only doors on one side.  ()what()
And i must tell You this: i saw a photo of Yours in the my pics thread and thought: huh, Nardo looks not as half as rigorous as i expected.  :D
Maybe i´ll post a picture of myself in the next time, but i´m totally shy and i think Franky has to do it first ( we spoke about that yesterday).
And now some totally different: my framework stuff is nearly finished, it seems it´s growing and working  :). Cause of this i began a region for some MD here with main railway lines on the middle of a street  $%Grinno$%. Yes, i will do that horrible stuff! Can´t wait to show You and get some angry answer.  :D
In RL there is a crossing of a line with the mainstreet of Ypsilanti/Michigan but not only this: it´s also a street crossing too! I love these American engineers they´ve found this solution it works till now.
But for now: wonderful pictures of the AVG and i´m waiting for more. Would be nice to see some freight service on these lines again  ;), but i´m afraid this will be only a unrealistic dream...

First: Thanks to the compliment. I am not sure if my big one (3 1/2 years) would agree to you ...  ::)  :D
Second: No, they are not. They only have doors at their right side and are turned in terminal loops. The second control stand however is necessary for shunting - it is mostly impossible to see anything from the front control stand if you go backward - and for exceptional situations.
I can remember that on a night with heavy snowfall the motorcar was turned in Ettlingen and went "backwards" all the way to Ittersbach because the loop in Ettlingen was clear(ed) while the loops in Ittersbach and Langensteinbach were disappearing under the snow and wouldn't be cleared until the next day.
Third: There is some freight traffic on the AVG but usually whenever I got lucky to see a freight train I don''t have a camera with me, have to drive or something else prevents me from taking pictures ...  :'(
You might have a look in the Eisenbahnbilder-Thread over at the Simforum though, some weeks ago I was lucky enough to catch a freight train between Busenbach and Ettlingen through the back window of a motorcar.

Oh, and for those who don't know the AVG, here'S a Google Maps linkie (http://maps.google.com/?ll=48.91167,8.492088&spn=0.151855,0.363579&t=m&z=12&vpsrc=6). ;). And since Google doesn't show the railway line :angrymore: here's a bing maps linkie (http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=48.901390308822585~8.478955214526902&lvl=13&dir=0&sty=r&ss=yp.busenbach~pg.1~rad.4,89538137479858&form=LMLTCC), too, with the railway line!

Outside the Heiliggeistkirche in Heidelberg dark clouds covered the sky and darkened the sun some time before sunset. Inside I had the feeling the light of the candle was brighter than the light outside. And just after we left the church it began raining cats and dogs ...

Papa Nardo chased some steam this weekend, well, a little bit that is.
One of my favorite railway line celebrated its 100th birthday, and since I never saw a train on it before(!) I wanted to go there. However due to family ties I was only able to see the last two trains of the anniversary weekend ...  :'( oh, well, better than nothing at all! ;)

The weather was ... well, not bright would be kind of euphemism, except for the last picture I only used my 50mm lens ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F9286%2Fpict9999s.jpg&hash=7a6009cb18b2da1a8c4a438b7f4d796533bc528b) (http://img822.imageshack.us/i/pict9999.jpg/)
01. When I arrived at the railway station in Dahn (http://maps.google.de/maps?q=Dahn&hl=de&sll=51.151786,10.415039&sspn=17.866606,46.538086&vpsrc=0&t=m&z=12) this railbus was waiting at me. I haven't seen it in action that day at all.

02. The first train I caught on this railway line! We're here close to the loading ramp at Dahn Süd. In order to avoid shunting manoeuvres there's a loco at both ends of the train. Here leading the diesel loco 211 019-5 ...

03. ... and at the other end the steam engine 52 7596, one of the famous "Kriegslok.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg585.imageshack.us%2Fimg585%2F6969%2Fpict0014s.jpg&hash=e66acfa40502106d2756068c85c01a97cbc114fb) (http://img189.imageshack.us/i/pict0014kb.jpg/)
04. It was really dark that day ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg710.imageshack.us%2Fimg710%2F9263%2Fpict0021s.jpg&hash=47a95aaa5a1630b0562b14c11a435abd7390ae4e) (http://img705.imageshack.us/i/pict0021f.jpg/)
05 I arrived in Dahn just before the train left - no time to place the video, I just did these pictures.
I do doubt that the man with the cell phone is realising that these old signals are rare, more than the loco itself! I don't know any other place where this kind of signals have survived until today!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg585.imageshack.us%2Fimg585%2F5521%2Fpict0022s.jpg&hash=88baa8a824e1c276e7c6f3a0ba8484a844c0a2bd) (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/pict0022u.jpg/)
06. Again the 52 7596 in all her glory!
The last time I saw in this machine in action was Good Friday 2003. It was the last logn steam ride I made with my father who did half a year ago ...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg26.imageshack.us%2Fimg26%2F2786%2Fpict0031sw.jpg&hash=4a37d7e5c59ad83ea81a3f56750acae5f888293e) (http://img849.imageshack.us/i/pict0031lk.jpg/)
I stayed the time between departure and arrival of the train in Dahn in order to satisfy some ... well ... minor needs of me and my family members, such as eating, drinking, toilets ...  $%Grinno$%

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg52.imageshack.us%2Fimg52%2F5983%2Fpict0032sa.jpg&hash=a7795949d55c8fa4f71ffdad29371f82c6fc0f6f) (http://img856.imageshack.us/i/pict0032l.jpg/)
08. Again the 52 7595 passing the old "Haltetafeln" in Dahn Bf.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg26.imageshack.us%2Fimg26%2F7643%2Fpict0036st.jpg&hash=1ce0fef231920e03148b31eeb7c93a22f431194f) (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/pict0036ly.jpg/)
The departure of the train of the picture before.
My old legs didn't carry me further in the short time of the train stopping here.
While shooting the video and the pictures I didn't like the old ladies walking in front of me, now I like it. It's 2011, not 1951, and this is so typical for historic trains. :)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg821.imageshack.us%2Fimg821%2F2631%2Fpict0061s.jpg&hash=eafa366e4e4581d3142cbc5b1a81726243b78fcc) (http://img638.imageshack.us/i/pict0061v.jpg/)

52 7596 is waiting at its end of the train to leave Hinterweidenthal (http://maps.google.de/maps?q=Hinterweidenthal&hl=de&ll=49.197354,7.748709&spn=0.036288,0.090895&sll=49.150843,7.778506&sspn=0.145288,0.363579&vpsrc=6&t=m&z=14) for this day.

That's it. The day was dark, no sensation were to be expected but I like its atmosphere. If you like it a bit bigger just click the pics, and if you like it moving and making sound then you might like my video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCgNfVPYVok).

It has been a while ...

Another PC died, together with my copy of C1. I am using the laptop of my mom, but it is by far not powerful enough neither for SC4 nor for C1. But at least there's a copy of PaintShopPro installed on it...

Anyway here I have some pictures of my todays walk in sunshine through the woods and field on fire by the colors of autumn. Hope you like them.

Hey my friend, it is truly great to know you are still around.  I hope the kids and wife are doing well.

Great fall pics.  Visually speaking, fall is my favourite time of year.

Very cool, I never noticed this thread before.  You have quite some talent as a photographer Bernhard!

The autumn colors in your area are gorgeous, you've captured them beautifully!

Hello to all!

For some time it seems that 2011 would finish better than it began. Unfortunately the slap into my neck took me back to the ground ...

Anyway, life goes on. After an unusual dry October there has been finally quite some rain in November and December (just the same as in "November Rain" from Guns'n'Roses. And last Sunday - the first rime. My big one is still disappointed that he hasn't seen his first snow but, well, I have a feeling this might change in a (short) while ...  ::)

But before I show you a bit rime:

@rooker1: Thanks! Well, we are still alive, with a bunch of problems, but at least together ... ;)
About fall: Definately. The colours of the fall are wonderful.

@vester: Thanks!

@kelis: Yeah, they are kind of a highlight of the year. Even more than the blossoming of the fruit trees which are wonderfull, too!

@Battlecat: Thanks!
The autumn colors are a challenge each year again. So less time, so less nice weather (either fog or sun), so much pictures to take ...  ::)

Here are my latest. Hope you like them:

Here near Frankfurt we know only this horrible "Fasching", but Your pics of old Fasnet tradition are really nice. These masks look so medieval and remind me also to theater masks from Japan. Strange - but they do...  ;)
And it looks cold in BW really cold. My sister lives in Stuttgart, she said it´d be cold like in Siberia.

It has been a while ... Life seems to become more kind to me than it used to be, some problems stayed but some bigger problems have been solved.

And in the meantimes spring has begun. The weather was, well, not too good, but here are some impressions from the last days:

It is nice to hear from you. I am so glad that spring is coming. Although it has been raining for most of the week.
You mind me asking if we might see a small update of Urland sometimes?  ;)

Somehow, the rain during spring and summer has always attracted myself more than during autumn, I found them very beautiful, and give a great palette of photographs to take.

I loved quite a lot the Cherry Blossoms, rain in spring and Raindrops pictures.

It's spring time, there are flowers everywhere and from time to time I found the time to get my camera working.

But before:
RickD: Glad you like them. In between the rain showers I eventually found the time to make some more pictures.
Urland unfortunately is still collecting dust ...  &mmm

art128: Definitely. Especially rain on flowers is wonderful! (and in spring and summer it's not as cold as in spring/Winter ...;))

Some time ago I went on a walk. Weather was grey and cold, the hole sky covered by gray and heavy clouds. I was thinking of not talking a camera with me but in the end I grabbed my small Powershot and put it in my pocket.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fc351108b77cb01e5a45a361427860cad.jpg&hash=5b5e142ea48245c9fb4eb3814ff10b1fae8772ec) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

There was this wonderful flowering peach tree next to the lane I was walking. When I passed by the first time the light was normal:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F0ffa7e706f5b4bf6c656b11757965458.jpg&hash=29741f9709eca6efb3ed44ab2e22124479b98097) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

But when I came back the sun broke through the clouds with a wonderful yellow light that I am chasing for years. Usually I have no camera with me when I see it:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F47cd4e5d75034b4b6a83aeda3e4f3454.jpg&hash=b9371989a1d2c0884427645778bedf7dd4c5b3fe) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Good luck for me that I took my small camera, bad luck for me that my big camera was lying next to my 90mm macro lens far out of reach at home ...
