Looks like a great game, have been following CIM for a while now. I'm a big public transit fan, and this game looks exactly like what I have been hoping for, definately gonna buy it when it comes out.  It also has a map editor included, so I think the final game might be pretty similar to SC4 in some ways at least.

Also, for everybody who is interested, I recommend reading and following the Beta Preview AAR (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?510529-Cities-in-Motion-A-Beta-Preview-AAR) (After Action Report, basically just beta gameplay in a "diary") of this game, it's really great and demonstrates the many possibilities (and the few flaws) of the game very well. Developer Diaries (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?552-Cities-in-Motion) (link to the forum category, each diary is in it's own post) are also nice, though they tell more about some certain details of the game than about the gameplay as a whole.

By the way, it's made by a small Finnish game studio.  ;)

I'm probably looking forward to this the most out of other games coming out this year.  I think CIM looks promising.

looks nice

But why every time I look at a city builder I always see buildings from SC4 custom content :)

I'm not the best person to ask, because I am of the "one true love" persuasion.  However...

1.  Looks like SC4's almost 10 year old ortho/diag grid still rules.
2.  Looks like the developers were smart and adopted SC4's fixed view perspective.
3.  Some of the textures, in particular road lane and center lines, are really, really poorly done.
4.  The buildings/lots look inflexible.
5.  Everything, while rendered very clearly, lacks the richness of detail that SC4 buildings, props and textures have.
6.  The trees are not good, and my guess is look worse close up.
7.  The transit aspect (mapping, planning, etc) looks seriously interesting from an eye candy standpoint, but only truly so if the simulation engine is up to serious player standards (i.e., not a one-dimensional toy that, after you exhaust the possibilities in a day or two's worth of play, does the same thing over and over again).

I'll buy it.  The question is, will I play it more than once?

Things like this make me unsure:

Quote■Experience realistic 3D graphics with more than 100 unique, highly detailed buildings
■Choose between more than 30 different vehicles based on real-life models of buses, trams, water buses, helicopters, and subways, complete with an underground view

100 buildings.... 100?  Really?  Not many at all. SG alone has more than that I believe.

The game looks more simmilar to Chris Sawyer's Locomotion and Transport Tycoon then SimCity. Butir looks somewhat interesting...

I agree, the game seems to be closer to Transport Tycoon or Transport Giant than Sim City. But I loved those games. And after reading the Beta Preview I got so excited that I preordered Cities in Motion.  ;D

We might have hope for custom building creation still, as in this new Video Developer Diary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_lTSeKZjTY) the lead designer says "And there are lots of different buildings to use and all the same tools as we would have with the team." at about 2:55 in the video.

It's much less detailed than Simcity 4 but it seems to offer more realism than Locomotion and Transport Tycoon... This is going to be hard to judge...  :P

In general Paradox makes a good game.  I often find them repetitive though, and they certainly have a "best way" to be played.  Medieval Lords could have been a great game if not for this.  I have barely touched Europa Universalis though.  I think they need to find a balance between complexity and graphics.

30 vehicles is not that many either, but I guess they would have something like "Freight Truck" rather than a truck for every goods type (like Transport Tycoon).  I would still think of playing TT, but then I remember the process of cycling out the old vehicles.

They got it right in Railroad Tycoon 3 in my opinion.  If the AI was better...

I don't know why, but I can not help but feeling too much of a graphical resemblance to dare I say, societies, just in comparison to societies, this is what that should of had, because at least with motion you get the diagonals, but how often do see city builders with tram lines?

Another email has arrived

QuoteBrand new 'Tram' trailer released for Cities in Motion

February 22nd street date set for the ultimate public transport simulator

Paradox Interactive have today released a brand new gameplay trailer for Cities in Motion, the forthcoming mass transportation simulator for PC developed by Colossal Order Ltd, illustrating how to construct a Tram network, just one of over 30 different types of public transport vehicles in the game. Travelling back in time to 1961, the 'Tram' trailer guides the viewer on the essentials of building a tram network system for commuters from creating a new line, adding stops in strategic locations and buying the trams to carry the passengers to their destinations.

 "$Deal"$

And another email

You can now pre-order from the website address in the above post, if you do then you get five bonus vehicles.

I must admit I don't recognise any of the vehicles, but hopefully some of you might think its worth the $19.95 USD to pre-order.

here's the list

QuoteBus: Jubilee Blim
The Jubilee Blim is the iconic minibus of the early 60's. It is compact, cozy and has a unique silhouette. Despite its cute look, the Jubilee Blim doesn't lag behind its competitors: its boasts a powerful engine and a well-built frame, making it fast and sturdy.

Tram: Livingstone Inauguration
The Livingstone Inauguration sports a modern braking and acceleration control system, making the tram easy to steer. However, the delicate devices also make the tram prone to malfunctions. All Livingstone trams are produced in Wakefield, England, and shipped all over the world.

Metro: Arnauld Porte
The French-built Arnauld Portes are well-known for their elegant rattan covered seats. They can carry large amounts of passengers and are very sturdy. These reliable metro trains first entered service in London in 1915 and soon became popular in continental
cities as well.

Boat: Tiergarten Ferry
The Tiergarten Ferry comes from Sweden and is built very sturdy. It is fairly slow due to mainly being used as a sightseeing boat, but the solid frame and well-designed coalheated steam engine make it a good vessel of choice for the backbone of the water transportation infrastructure.

The Skylark
The Skylark has its roots in the French military, but has also lately been modified for civilian use. It has a large canopy, allowing the passengers to enjoy the view while
travelling. The Skylark is very maneuverable due to its enhanced tail rotor and durable landing gear.

hopefully that's the last of the emails, if not I'll be back   :D

I downloaded the demo, played the tutorial which was the only scenario available, and immediately after it I pre-purchased the game from Steam. ;D It just looked so great.

According to Steam, I should get it tomorrow including the free when pre-purchased DLC. Pretty cheap game too, only 19.99€. (~27$)

Looks like it even has got few fansites (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?520839-Cities-in-Motion-Fan-Site-List) up already, too bad most of them aren't English/International.

Here's a free site to DL the demo from:

Not that I'm against FilePlanet making money, but they are not the only game in town.

I'll look at this- what I said a while back stands, though.

Yeah, but the game play style is completely different. It comes off almost more like I want to say Simutrans meets Tycoon City then SimCity 4. It seems like my PC almost could handle it. The game does have enhanced HDR lighting, but when I initially installed the demo with that on, the game did not want to work, froze for the most part and crashed. However, turning that feature off, got it to work as normal, the previous posted pictures look like others had HDR off. Then there was the occasional grass just fading to black, otherwise it was something different. This was more of a problem solving strategy game then builder.

I've now got the game on DVD, its a bit like playing Simutrans ... I'm finding its good for that spare half-a-hour were you want something to do, but don't want to get to involved in it.

It may change as they keep adding updates as well as being able to buy it for a MAC, there is now;

Cities in Motion (Main Game)
Cities in Motion: Tokyo (adds Tokyo City)
Cities in Motion: Metro Station (adds extra stations)
Cities in Motion: Design Now (adds more vehicles)
Cities in Motion: Design Marvels (adds more vehicles)
Cities in Motion: Design Classic (adds more vehicles)

Its a bit hit and miss with CIM Addons, so far only the ones I have mentioned over in my topic have worked as intended (there is a lot obviously that I haven't tried out and I could just be having bad luck picking them), some of its to do with CIM patches as the addon has been made for patch 20 and we are now up to 22 and some of its a community just getting started and still trying to work out what works and what doesn't.

Its been announced at gamescon 2012 that there is to be a new Cities in Motion game estimated release is Q2 2013 and is to be called "Cities in Motion 2: The Modern Days". some of it sounds great

QuoteCities in Motion 2 is the sequel to the popular mass transit simulation game Cities in Motion. The Modern Days introduces new features, like multiplayer game modes, day and night cycle, timetables and dynamic cities. The player's actions in building the transportation network will affect how the city grows, with affordable transportation spawning middle class housing and work places, and more expensive and delicate choices bringing in demanding business people. Player has many different types of vehicles to choose from and now can also build roads with bus lanes. Tackling the rush hour by managing transportation timetables and meeting the needs of the citizens are one of the key elements of building a successful and efficient network!
The game will be available for both Windows and Mac OS. Estimated release is Q2 2013.

Features:

Dynamic Cities: The city will change according to how you play.
    Day and night cycle.
Timetables: Manage your fleet according to the rush-hours.
    Multiplayer: Competetive and Co-operative modes.
    Build dedicated bus lanes.

the "multiplayer game modes" not so great, just what is about gaming companies and this desire they have that we should all be playing together, It used to be that playing a game was a solitary experience and after a busy day it was great for de-stressing and now ...   :bomb:

I love the look of this! development may be sporadic but it just looks great! The realism appeals where by the network needs to adapt to change. Fantastic idea.... roll over 2012, I want it to be the release dare for CIM2 !!!   :)

The game will include buses, trams, trolleybuses, waterbuses and metro.

That it? No heavy rail/commuter rail?

Metro is their rail ... you can have commuter elevated trains, surface trains and underground trains in CIM1 so I'm assuming the same applies in CIM2, also in CIM1 the freight trains etc are controlled by the AI so you will see them using the rail networks but you can't control them unlike the commuter trains

With the new SC, this will be a competitive rematch for this market! Although, what CIM has going for them, is their price, versus what Maxis is doing, and their stronghold is the focus on the traffic system, which is more of my focus. I don't think EA has even caught eye of CIM, they are more than well aware of rivals like Monte Cristo and Zynga So, we'll see.

How do you feel about Hot-Air Balloons as part of your cities transport system, they take 13 passengers and use the helicopter landing pads (they also come in different colors)

The latest DLC "Design Quirks" also means I can have

QuoteAmphibus - The extraordinary Amphibus is a great invention. Looks like a bus, but glides on water elegantly! It carries a decent amount of passengers and moves speedily on water. It offers superb traveling with cushioned seats

Caterpillar - The Caterpillar is an unique vehicle. It's a powerful metro train, and looks like a funky caterpillar! It has plenty of room and while the engine isn't top notch, it doesn't consume much fuel, making it a very efficient vehicle

Lucitania - This fancy tram was designed to be used in parades, but since it was very popular, more were produced. Cleverly disguised as a boat, this tram actually has lots of seats and a decent engine hidden inside

Sight-seeing Bus- The sight-seeing bus is built to look like a small train. While bringing joy to people by adding a cheerful touch to the cityscape, and also has a very low energy consumption. It's well-rounded vehicle, and very nice looking

They have now put out a new dev diary on how the multiplayer mode is going to work

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?665863-Cities-in-Motion-2-%E2%80%93-Multiplayer-Mode-%E2%80%93-Developer-diary-6&s=f6acd1bcdc1dbf846562478e8134e88c

QuoteOne of the biggest differences between the first and second Cities in Motion is the multiplayer mode. The first CiM had no MP and many players requested it, so we put effort into making it a reality in the sequel. Generally, multiplayer modes are not very common in simulation games, as they tend to be single player games with the goal of "beating the game". We felt that simulation can benefit from multiplayer, though, and wanted to make sure there would still be that "game beating" aspect included even in the multiplayer mode. As such, we created two types of MP modes: co-op and competitive.

In co-op, you can play with up to three friends and all work at the same company on the same, big map. Building a huge network is much easier and more fun with friends. Large maps with many city centers offer enough room for many players to work simultaneously.

Along with the co-operative mode, we designed a competitive mode for players to pit their skills against one another. In competitive mode, you can choose the objectives using built-in sliders. Options to choose from include a time limit, if you feel like you want to play a fast paced game, and/or a company value target. If you have both objectives, the game will end when either is reached. You can also play with only one objective or no objectives at all, if sandbox play with friends is your thing. Team play is available for both modes, and co-operative and competitive are for up to six players.

The main goal in competitive mode is always to try and do better than your opponents' company. In team play, you work with your team through a team chat (or on a voice chat) to choose what everyone will do. The maps have many city centers, so you could assign one to each player, or have one disrupt the opponents while other build elsewhere. Also, division by vehicle type would be interesting.

We hope to see many of you having fun with the multiplayer mode once the game is out! It's a great improvement, don't you agree?

I have to say this appeals to me a lot more than the way its going to be done for SimCity 2013

Some more details on how they expect the Map Editor to work in CIM2

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?669215-Cities-in-Motion-2-%96-The-Map-Editor-%96-Developer-diary-7

QuoteLandscaping is more flexible than ever with the terrain tools, you can use them to modify the landscape by raising and lowering, smoothing and flattening it. There are several new brushes that allow you to create features that look natural and blend in well with the rest of the landscape–modifying the terrain first with a round brush and then adding detail with an uneven brush. Creating interesting looking mountains and shorelines has never been so easy and fun!

The terrain tools also include a versatile random generator for the landscape. There is a set of filters that can be adjusted to create a completely unique map base in no time. Want a map with multiple islands? Just tweak the options and you are set! Maybe more terrain and less water with smoother hills? Done! These filters allow for quick map generating and work as a wonderful base to build whatever one wishes. And afterwards, you can tweak and modify the terrain manually as much as necessary.

But what are maps without the cities? Empty maps, that's what! So, now that we have dynamic cities in CiM 2 we also have some new features that come into play when creating them. The new road tool is the biggest change in the map editor. The grid-less map layout is most visible when creating roads since there are no barriers in creating different shapes. The roads are as organic as the rest of the terrain and they are also automatically propped for your convenience. You don't need to change between different road tools, such as underpasses, bridges and whatnot, when creating your network of roads as the road tool automatically blends it all together so that you can concentrate in building the actual network instead of trying to figure out how to connect that bridge to this road. Also, now that the map editor handles most of the menial tasks for you, you can get deeper into designing the flow of the road network using the various types of roads.

It is possible to place each and every building manually if that is what you wish but considering the size of the maps (we are talking roughly 4 times bigger than the largest maps in CiM 1!) it can become quite the heroic deed. However, in addition to the manual city building, there is also the possibility to generate the buildings. This is especially handy when testing what you have built so far, so you can see how the city develops and changes, how the road network manipulates the city, and so on. Quite possibly the best way is to combine both manual building placing with the generator tool, that way you can control the key areas of the city and let the generator do the rest. Of course, you can go back to detail work afterwards.

for those of you that have CityScape the way the roads and buildings are being done will look very familiar.

I've been a bit out of the loop on everything, but with the new Sim City a complete debacle at this point and my computer getting increasingly crashy when playing SC4 I'm in need of something new.  This looks great, especially with the transit orientated focus.  I'm excited.  I'm glad I checked in this forum today. lol

You used to see a lot more traffic like that in this part of the US. Blimps and Hot Air Balloons used to be the thing in the last decade. Oh well.

At least Cities in Motion, the second, that shouldn't require you to be online like playstation home network's tycoon city simulator was first, and than that other not surprising fallout simcity 13 was.

I pre-ordered and have already spent about 3 hours playing since it was released, it's amazing. The transportation system is very versatile, as you will see in the trailer as well.

EDIT: Proof (an interchange I just built in the Map Editor)

I just bought cities in motion and played it for a few hours. I must say this game amazes me! Sure it is no sim city game, but this is so much more closer to what I would personally expect for a worthy next simcity game compared to the horror EA has released. I would have gladly paid twice the price.

You're totally right, I spent 60 euros on SimCity 2013 and I should I have save it for this one, as I'm not playing anymore that SC2013. I big disappointment. Maybe I'll by this one one of these days.
