Title: SC4Mapper
Post by: wouanagaine on December 15, 2006, 12:12:56 AM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F295%2Fsc4mapper0001do0.jpg&hash=78c0ce77ebc75dfd3e288eefd2cd2b3a1ea6cb32)
SC4Mapper is a tool that you will definitly need if you want to import/export SC4M files.
It does not require SC4Terraformer to run. It is basically SC4Terraformer without the terraforming tools and without 3D, so DirectX is not required
A readme is included, teaching you how to use the tool

SC4Mapper can be found here (http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/7/28/145206/SC4MapperV2.zip) unzip and run SC4Mapper.exe
you may need :
MSCVP71.DLL - It can be found here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71 (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71)

If you are having trouble with SC4Mapper, please download the new (2013) version here (linky) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=179)

QuoteIt's a great tool, but seriously, FileDen SUCKS when it comes to downloading things...
Duh, can you expand it a bit ?
I found Fileden very usefull for uploading, folder managment, zip, batch uploads, and the best feature IMO is that filenames do not change contrary to imageshack
The free account can have 500Mb and a 20Gb bandwith per months

The tools by Wouanagaine have given simcity4 yet another life ... I am using the different programs for all kinds of tasks, but one things I feel is still missing in the map making department. When I open a sc4M in Mapper and save region it fantastically creates the new region in my game ... however, a number of the great maps by the NHP all have big city tiles. I like to play with medium tiles for a number of reasons ... I have yet not find a way to change the embedded config file in the SC4M file to the one I want.

Is this possible?

If "yes", could somebody explain it to me.

If "no", is it perhaps an idea to enhance the program with such an option, if possible of course.

Thanks in advance.

Serkanner....  That is a good request.  I can tell you how to do this using SC4Terraformer.  But since I use SC4Terraformer I dont use SC4Mapper.

To change the config.bmp for a map.

1. Open SC4TF and open your region.
2. Save it as and SC4M file.
3. Close SC4TF
4. Open the region folder for this region.  Edit the config.bmp to your liking.  And make sure that the config.bmp is the only file in the region folder.
5. Open SC4TF and open the blank region you just created with your new config.bmp
6. Now Import your SC4M file you created before changing the config.bmp
7. File->Save
8. Enter SC4 and play away!

Hope this is helpfull Serkanner.

Thank you for the fast reply and thorough explanation. Unfortunately there is one problem. My version of SC4TF doesn't have an "import" or "save as" option. Its either load or create. underneath the "file" button. And the only save option is the one that creates the region in SC4 itself ...

Post by: jplumbley on February 06, 2007, 10:35:12 AM
Hi Serkanner,

No problem.  Your version does have the Import and save as command.  If you are using SC4Terraformer.  All versions do and did. (wouanagaine correct me if it is an older version than my testing days). The import is under Global Tools about 3rd or 4th from bottom.  And the Save is in the File menu.  Save is the only way to save your map to SC4.

That did the trick ...   ... the export button is indeed hidden in "global tools". Thanks for the big help.

Serkanner, I think JeanLucPicard mentionned a config editor in his released on the board

I have not implemented it in SC4Mapper or SC4TF, but I'm thinking of it ( along other things :) )

SC4Mapper isn't working for me for some reason.  The SC4M files load fine, but when I try to save them nothing happens.  After getting impatient, I'll quit and get an error report.  The log file says this:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 863, in SaveRgn
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory

This has happened to me several times (I can be very stubborn when I want something to work)()testing()

I am not sure what I am doing wrong - I have downloaded and installed SC4Mapper just fine.  Only problem is when I try and open it up it - well - it seems to ignore me............ %confuso
I know I have all the files in system32 I need - I checked carefully.  I also checked all the threads on all the forums I could find to see if someone else had a solution.
The text file created with the error says:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 1006, in OnClose
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 1009, in ShowMain
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 278, in __init__
UnicodeDecodeError: 'unicodeescape' codec can't decode bytes in position 2-4: truncated \UXXXXXXXX escape

Also my pc insists the program is running when I restart it - but it doesn't show up in Task Manager.  I am running Vista and have 1.5gb of RAM installed

Can anyone point me in the right direction?  There are some great regions I would love to use!!!

Can someone help me here. I have SC4 Mapper v2.0. Anyway, I was able to use this on before and I was able to get regions out of it. That was before and it has been a while. I downloaded a region sometime before and decided to make create it to a region. It seems that I have forgotten how to create a region.

The first thing I do is:
Press create
click SC4M
choose the SC4M file
Click Save region
I leave the region name as is
then a dialogue error box appears

Error with saving region
A problem has occured while creating the region folder. You should enter a valid folder name as region name

I hope someone replies soon. I tried in Simtropolis but there hasn't been an immediate response.

What is the name of the region ? In order to work, the region name should be a valid folder name, because SC4Mapper will try to create such a folder under the MyDoc\SimCity 4\Regions folder

It came out as NHP_canary, so I retained the name. It didn't work so I tried the ones that worked before. I got one from the NHP island map pack 01. I got the amarco map. It came out as amarco. To my disbelief, the same error ()what(). I don't know how something worked before and now it doesn't.

I don't know myself ??? Maybe you already have a 'NHP_canary' or 'amarco' folder in your Region folder ?

Can you try the following in SC4Mapper
- Open one of your region
- Export it,
- Create a new region from the exported one ( change the name to something you know you don't have )
and see if it is working and report the result here please

Take care

I tried downloading it again but it didn't work. So I decided to use my desktop computer. It worked. I guess I forgot to mention, I just remembered that the SC4 Mapper worked in my desktop computer and I was trying SC4 Mapper on my laptop. I have no idea why it's not working in my laptop. As to why I'm using my laptop, well, my desktop computer is running out of space and so I'm actually moving all my stuff. I still feel sad it doesn't work in my laptop. Still, as long as something is working I wouldn't complain.

Can you check if you have a SC4Mapper.exe.log in your SC4Mapper install folder on your laptop ? and if yes, throw the content of it here please

Edit : Is it you that sent me a PM on ST with an error log about 'UnicodeDecodeError: 'unicodeescape' codec can't decode bytes in position 25-27: truncated \UXXXXXXXX escape' ???
Anyway can you tell me what is your full path name to your region folder ( starting from c:\ ) please ?

This is weird. The one in my desktop is SC4Mapper.exe.log but the one in my laptop is SC4Mapper.exe. I guess that's it.

I didn't ask you about the codes. My problem was the one I mentioned above with the steps. No one answered.

Does SC4Mapper work with Windows 2000?  Because I use a Mac (with SimCity for Mac), I have Windows 2000 in a Windows simulator program.  I installed SC4 Mapper successfully, but when I tried to install a map from the STEX, the "Save Region" button seemed to do nothing other than ask me for the region's name.

Wow, I didn't think this topic would ever come up again... hurray!!! No wait, the other one... NUTS.
I had the same "ignoring" trouble after loading it, but that was late last year. I was trying my damndest to work with a map that I fell in love with and honestly, when I couldn't use Mapper to give me what I wanted I just stopped playing. I had no interest in it if I had to use another region!
Well fast-forward to now, and I've gotten myself a new system. 2 days ago, actually. And since it's fresh, I decided to give Mapper another shot in the hopes that there may have simply been another file or program somewhere in my old system that was conflicting with it. So I installed SC4/RH and Mapper, but still nothing. I can post my log as well if anyone would think it would help, just say the word. It's a shame that it doesn't work for some of us, and for apparently no particular reason.
Thanks for any help.

I can't help with your SC4Mapper problem, but if you want something simple to create a config file, I use Landscape Designer which I download from Simtropolis, I'm afraid I can't help with a link for it, but it is designed to create SimCity 4 region.ini, terrain images, and config bitmaps.

ok i can save new cities in currently existing regions, it seems the only region i cant is the one i just created

i changed the config to config.bmp and the only other file in the region folder is the region file which holds the configuration settings

ive done ctrl + shift + alt + r to import the grey region image

am i missing something here?
Title: Re: SC4Mapper
Post by: catty on October 18, 2008, 10:33:24 AM
If the import worked it should have taken quite a bit of time for each city to be rendered ie anything up to a hour depending on how fast your computer is, so did that happen?, also I always use a bitmap saved as 256 colour bitmap as my gray region image, so what did you use?

yea it took about 3 mins to render the region and each tile came up on a screen saying Creating New City before returning to the region view

im not too aware when it comes to images, but the properties says the bmp is 513 x 513 pixels and the Bit Depth is 8

ok well for the 4th time now ive uninstalled SC4 but this time, i chose to delete all my existing cities rather than save them, which led to my SC4 folder in \Users\Documents to be removed (i tried 5x to delete this before uninstalling but was denied access everytime, even as admin)

then i reinstalled SC4, created a new region, put the config file into the folder and then rendered it again and this time my region folder is filled with City - New City.sc4 upto City - New City (25).sc4 and ive been able to save my work now at last

so thankfully that is behind me

i just wanted to say thanks very much to those that attempted to help me with this problem as i really do appreciate it

Don't know if you got your problem solved, but I had exactly the same issue. The problem is that SC4Mapper is AUTOMATICALLY DEFINED to function on the "My Documents/SimCity 4/Regions" folder.

I have defined my Simcity to funtion instead on a folder called

"My Documents/SimCity 4/Plugins_PAK/Regions"

I do this because I keep my Simcity 4/Plugins folder CLEAN for installing, maintaining, adding, deleting, etc of my plugins and use the Plugins_PAK folder to hold the SC4DatPacker  packed Plugins_compressed folder and "root" essential files so I don't have to be constantly moving files back and forth. So essentially the Plugins_PAK/Regions is my working directory, not the more common path. (See HERE (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3764.0) for a discussion of this method)

For this reason I have to make a FAKE FOLDER (for me) called "Regions" under my SimCity 4 folder purely to hold the "SC4Mapper" working folder. I run SC4Mapper and exit (it will properly save the region this way), THEN I open that folder and MOVE the region to my REAL working REGIONS folder.  I'd rather move a file when I make a region from a map rather than do it everytime I run DatPacker.. :)

Since I only do a map maybe 1 -3 times PER YEAR, this isn't really an issue, though it would be nice to configure SC4Mapper to MY working folder.

If I do this it happily puts the files into the wrong "regions" folder then I move it and go about my SimCity city building.

Oh just one more point.. You can't have SC4 running while you're doing this and find the new region.. why? because SC4 only scans the REGIONS folder when it STARTS.. therefore to see new regions you must restart it.. I'm sure everyone besides me remembers this, but the advantage of being old like I am is the old stuff is still a NEW discovery ;)

MattGo, welcome to SC4D!  Registration for the LEX is separate from forums registration.  You'll need to register here (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_userreg.php).  Once you're logged in, you'll see the download link.

Done.  And for future reference, try to avoid double posting, and use the "Modify" button instead, to edit your earlier post.

Thanks. Just so you know, I'm really bad at computer stuff.

eta: Wow! It took me a total of about 4 hours to get this including downloading the regions from another site, finding this site and finally being able to download it, but it was definitely worth it. I've had SC4 since I got my computer about 5 years ago and wish I had found this sooner. A+

When I downloaded the mini patch, I wanted to add the file to the library, but my winrar told me that the libry is working good, but it is corrupt.

and from where do you get that you need to add the patch to the library.zip ?

The installation note is one line and you get it wrong
Quote
Download, and unzip in your SC4Mapper install folder ( usually c:\program files\SC4Mapper )
So definitly you don't need  a library.zip nor you need to add any files to it

Yes, I know. But I found that in the library there is a same file as the patch has, so i thought that if i change them, maybe it will work.

I tried to register, but the confirmation mail was temporary rejected by my postgrey. Unfortunately the LEX did not automatically resend the confirmation mail. Contrary to this forum, I did not find a way to resend the confirmation mail. It should get trough now, because I added the maildomain to the whitelist.

So my question is, how can I get the LEX to resend the confirmation mail, without re-registering with a new username/email address?

EDIT: after 2 failed attempts, I finally succeeded:
amedee (amedee-sc4@amedee.be) -> failed
amedee-test (amedee-sc4-test@amedee.be) -> failed
amedee-test2 (amedee-sc4-test2@amedee.be) -> success

So how can I get the two failed attempts deleted, and amedee-test2 (+ email address) changed to the first one?
PS: I don't mind that my email address is harvested. On the contrary, I'm doing a thesis on spam.

EDIT2: when I try to download SC4Mapper, I get the following error:
/tmp/ceJvhcb_.zip.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

Browser: Namoroka (Firefox 3.6.1pre for Ubuntu)
Operating system: Ubuntu 9.10
Obviously I'm not playing SimCity4 on the same machine as this one.

Amedee, I've just downloaded SC4Mapper (again) with no problems at all, using FireFox. So the problem isn't with the file.

Regarding your registration attempts, there is a very specific thread here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=232.0) for any problems registering for the LEX, and LEX Admins monitor that thread, to help new members with any problems they come across, whereas we generally leave questions specifically related to SC4Mapper to Wouanagaine, as he is the creator.

Maybe it's dumb and stupid on my part, what you ask, but maybe not here, where h which I apologize.
So far as I know when I have a map of the region there is a way to determine in what area it should be towns - 2x2 or 4x4 etc. Also know that the saved game of a city can be moved not only from region to region, but also within a region. So probably ridiculous, but is there a way to program to unite the city with 4 different size 2x2 km in a big 4x4 km swords after they started the game and it has developed a building.

The SC4Mapper somehow is not working for me. I try to save a region with custom config bmp and nothing happen. And the log file says this:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 331, in CreateRgn
File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 521, in CreateRgnFromGrey
File "D:\SC4\Code\SC4Mapper\rgnReader.py", line 585, in __init__
File "D:\SC4\Code\SC4Mapper\rgnReader.py", line 532, in WorkTheconfig
File "D:\SC4\Code\SC4Mapper\rgnReader.py", line 483, in VerifyMedium
File "Image.pyo", line 859, in getpixel
IndexError: image index out of range

The config bmp works fine with other map with same size.  ()what()
