  • Upper South Fork Valley (Valley - SE Quad Pine Branch Twp - lat. ___° ___' ___" N / lon. ___° ___' ___" W (center)) The Upper South Fork Valley is the valley through which the South Fork of the Wind River flows upstream of Devil's Elbow Bend, whichis 10.6 miles/17 kilometers south of the river's mouth on Barrett Lake.  At the bend, the South Fork bears sharply due north from the east-southeast direction it had been flowing in for the last three miles/five kilometers or so.  This stretch of the river is narrow and swift, and the Highland Spur of the DW&W Railroad hugs its banks for most of the distance and crosses the South Fork 12.7 miles/20.5 kilometers from its mouth.  The south side of the valley here is the Dutchman Hills and the north is the southeastern reaches of Broad Prairie, which tumble sharply to the river's edge.  Fourteen miles/22.5 kilometers upstream of the mouth of the South Fork, the valley and the river return to a generally north-south orientation, with the valley being fairly wide and gently sloped from this point to the US border about four and one-half miles/7.5 kilometers away.
