A Journey Through Finland

A warm 'Hello' to all and welcome to my first MD here on SC4D.

First of all, please don't be too critical with my English, cause I'm not a native speaker...

After posting at the German SimForum competition "Best Harbour Village (http://www.simforum.de/showthread.php?t=184687#post4282493)", where I was elected as 2nd winner, and at the "Best Mountain Village (http://www.simforum.de/showthread.php?t=186203&page=2#post4371198)" competition (2nd part (http://www.simforum.de/showthread.php?t=186203&page=2#post4382737)) as single participant, I was asked to present a MD of my work...

I have to admit that I was pondering since some time about starting a RP, but I was hesitant because of the work that would involve, especially concerning regular updates. On the other hand I'm well aware that it would be nothing more than fair to give something back for all the DL's that fill my plugin folder with more than 2 GB...

So I want to thank you all – for all the inspirations by those famous ' Painters' and 'Stone-Pushers' like Paeng and Framly (only to mention two of them) – and for all the hard work of you MODers, PROPers, BATers and LOTers!

When I started with SimCity, I mainly built huge cities, but with lots of parks, green zones and lakes (as soon as this was possible). With the time my interests changed to building smaller villages surrounded by agricultural areas and rural nature. But after some frustrating efforts because of a lack of missing possibilities – I gave it up...

Some three years ago I rediscovered SimCity – and I was overwhelmed!

First I only was lurking around, gazing at CJs, MDs and RPs and massively downloading content. Then I loaded the SC4 San Francisco region – and started off...

Introduction:

Finland (yes, with only one 'n') was discovered by the famous adventurer and explorer Finn Tandini many centuries ago. This virgin paradise that he found at the (back then known) world's end impressed Finn so deeply, that after returning home, only few years later people saw him under canvas again – as commander of a small fleet rife with settlers full of expectations, with them his family and many of his relatives and friends.

Historical records say that the settlers wanted to name this new land in honour of the discoverer 'Finnland' – but he refused. In his humble but firm manner, he achieved that one 'n' was cut – thus giving the country name a new double meaning: 'Finland' – the 'fine' land at the world's 'finale'...

So then, may I introduce myself?

I am Finn Tandini, descendant in direct line of the famous explorer in 26th generation. As many of my forefathers so I too was elected as country administrator. And the people say that I would do this task well.

Since some years I'm teaching my son – after he earnestly showing interest – to step into my shoes. He comes along on our journey.

Chapter 1: Ancestral Home of the Tandini

Since 22 generations our family home is located on an island off the coast. Its name Nesholt derives partly from our Italian-Greek roots, partly from Nordic influence: Greek 'Nesos' = Island, 'Holt' = town names in Island, Norway and on some British Islands. On top of the island there are still ruins of the old stronghold, which was inhabited over seven generations. In the 14th century a mansion was founded beneath the stronghold, directed to the open sea. Since then the mansion is the home of the Tandini.

Not always did my ancestors stand out by modesty... In the 17th century the fairly modest mansion was reconstructed into a noble palace, surrounded with spacious parks.

Then the world changed – depression, world wars...

The attitude of people changed, what resulted in decreasing acceptance of the rising maintenance costs. My father, whose interests were more with wine growing, abdicated the administrator charge and expanded the growing of wine. By very successful cuttings and excellent wine creations he considerably relieved the financial pressure.

Already in my young-manhood I developed a strong proposition to reconstruct our family home completely: once again it should become modest and I wanted it to blend harmonically into the surrounding nature. Based on a famous building of the well known architect Frank Lloyd Wright resulted an organic site that fits well our representative requirements.

But my son holds that the boreal planting of the estate doesn't really match the rather Mediterranean nature of Nesholt. Well, this seems to become one of my charges when I pass the chair to my son...

Beneath our estate a boardwalk runs down to our pier we opened to the public. It became a popular stomping ground to marvel at the flora and fauna of the sea.

From the upper entrance to our home an old iron bridge leads to the mill. In Finland we attach great importance to preferably natural and decentralized supply in all respects. Therefore, additionally to the two wind turbines, this mill serves mainly as electrical power supply. Because of lack of space to grow grain, we get the needs from the mainland, but flouring it our own...

Passing the sheep-run right hand up the hill a gravel path leads to the property of the family Gronki. There you get organic turkey meat and delicious pine and flower honey!

Immediately behind the Gronki start the vineyards. The gravel path leads in wide turn up to the castle ruin. Beneath the property of the Gronky the path passes a steel bridge leading to the only village on Nesholt. The scenic point above the steel bridge offers splendid views into the Gorge gap and onto the sea.

Well, bye for now – next time you are invited to visit Porto Nesholt.

Always good to see a new MD, but this one seems particularly interesting. It's rare to see someone make this brilliant a start. Your style reminds me of the best detail masters here and yet for some reason you achieve a very unique look. The underwater flora in particular is stunning.

My only remark would be the water mod. As you can see clearly in the first pictures its tiling effect is blatant at higher zooms. The color is very fitting, but I suggest picking a different texture.

Also, don't worry too much about having to update frequently or meet certain deadlines. Most of the folks here are used to waiting a bit longer just to get an even better update. Don't worry about your English, either, it's quite good ;)

I'll be following this closely. . .

Cheers
Willy

Very, very impressive start indeed....as the others have already said.  Your detailing is absolutely top notch!!
I can't wait to see more.  Try to update your MD at least every 45 days to prevent it from being moved to the inactive section.

Just spectacular  &apls &apls  Each picture sparkles with a ton of detail, work, and creativity. I certainly look forward to you continuing on this project. I would echo that you don't need to stress out about not updating all the time. My suggestion would be to sometimes do smaller updates if you feel like it's been too long since the last one--it's my habit when I feel like my Siilijoki has been too quiet for too long  ;)

I have to say it's not exactly what I expected when I saw the title "A Journey Through Finland" though  :D  Are there going to be Finnish aspects or is it just the name of the founder?

That's just a very great introduction! I'm glad you decided to start an MD here on SC4D. :)

There are so many details to look at. I especially like the scene with the watermill. Can we expect some snowy scenes? ;D

Well done!

Your level of detail is jaw dropping, the flora, rocks, buildings... everything. It all fits so nicely and is so detailed. Fantastic start!  ;D

They say pictures say a thousand words...this couldn't be more applicable to your scenes if you tried! Just spectacular.

In some ways, it is relaxing to look at this island oasis after a long day's work in the city.

Keep up the good work!

Let me chime in to the praise. ;) No, really, this is a great start. I like the scenery with all those beautiful details and the style is uniqe in a positive way. I am not a fan of your water mod, though. It has a repetitive pattern.

Looking forward to the next update.  :)

Well done! ;D

That's truly outstanding work! Your use of MMPs in this is really interesting, and I like how you've manage to tackle slopes. The mill has particularly nice look to it. Looking forward to more of your work :D

A Journey Through Finland

Replies:

Thank you all for the warm welcome and your encouraging comments!

- The water mod: I realized the tiling effect at higher zooms, but didn't pay much attention to it, because I was - and still am - much more concerned about the water transparency. I find it unrealistic high - and it forces me to work a lot at underwater flora... Well, but you seem to like it...
I already tried a lot of water mods, but without any change. Since short I'm in contact with 'der Gammler' from the German SimForum - he gave me some hints I will check soon. But anyway, I'll try out again other water mods - I'm thinking of Gobias' Water Pack's - hoping to eliminate the tiling effect.

- The name 'Finland': Well, 'Finland' comes, as I mentioned, from it's founder 'Finn Tandini' but with only one 'n', because I first started to present my work at the German SimForum and I wanted to distinguish it from the real existing land, which in German is written as 'Finnland'. I have to admit, that I didn't realize that in English it is written as 'Finland'...
And Yes, there will come snowy scenes in mountainous regions!

@ wallasey: I'm pleased – that is just what I want to create: relaxing to look at, comforting, calming, soothing.
I love creation – and I hate those ruining creation.

Intermezzo: Diving and Playing with Dolphins

Just let us linger on the bridge - gazing into the Gorge gap - letting our eyes wander up from the spring down to the sea.

A little bit south we watch Dimitry Dytes scuba diving school. He is a diving crack - famous all over Finland. But locals know him as a rascal, who sometimes plays cheap tricks on tourists...

Dolphins down the coast! The news spread rapidly - A group of divers and watchers hired two of Dimitry's boats. Obvious that Dimitry too is on the spot...

Chapter 2: Porto Nesholt

Leaving the steel bridge behind – from which we enjoyed splendid views into the Gorge gap and onto the sea – we enter the 'outskirts' of Porto Nesholt. Some of the residents kept with the simple rural life. Since many generations these three families live from wood harvest, turkey hen breeding, market gardening and fruit growing.

Opposite to them resides the family Walker. They always stuck to their British way of life, at least concerning their tenement. Aside they run the 'Ristorante Walker' fashioned in a charming mix of British and Mediterranean style. It is famous not only because of the delicious tomatoes the Walkers grow themselves...

The close-by rural market year-round offers agricultural products, fish and seafood, handicraft products for daily needs and artisanry mainly for tourists.

Directly underneath the Ristorante Walker, down the cliffs, there lives a kind of headstrong chap, who is only known by the name Hannibal. As a young nonconformist he arrived our island some 50 years ago, gave willingly a helping hand where accepted but always stuck to his peculiarity. Eventually he built this little hut, making a living from chicken and pigs. On his old days people often see him sitting at the beach in serenity, fishing and – carving...

He is well known for his quirky driftwood carvings and tourists love to buy them at the market.

Porto Nesholt was documentary mentioned the first time in the year 1286. Back then it was built of only a few huts surrounding a landing place. The present-day village is made up of a single street, on both sides lined commercial and residential houses, cafés and restaurants, the market at the southern and a small church at the northern end.

In the 80th a vehicle traffic ban was enacted, allowing only residents and deliverers access by car to the village. Initially some tourists had problems with that, so a barrier was necessary. The little gatehouse you see at the end of the ascending street is a remainder from that time...

In the course of the traffic ban the harbor facilities were almost completely renewed, whereupon the more than 230 year old quay walls were thoroughly restored. The small ferry landing, the 'captaincy office' and the harbor restaurant were modernized and sufficient parking lots were built.

This is nothing short of stellar.

Note that changing water mods does not change transparency. This is an option in your terrain controller. But since it looks so great, I wouldn't change it ;)

10/5!  ;D

What's the water mod you are using, it is very transparent

A Journey Through Finland

Thank you all for your enthusiastic comments!

@ noahclem: I feel honored!

@ Swordmaster: I already figuered that out. I use PEG-MTP Terrain-Mod and I found a file ...\ZZZ_Facelift Mods\PEG\MTP\Terrain Mod 2\PEG-MTP_TerrainMod_2. But this file contains no exemplars. So I still didn't find out where the GW-transparency is changed in that way.
For a test I tried the "Berner Oberland Mod" with which I was able to adjust the transparency to my satisfaction - but this mod raised the snow hight which is important on some maps of my region ... I will try to find out how to adjust the snow hight - until that I stay with the PEG-MTP Terrain.
To eliminate the tiling effect of the Brigantine water I tried several other water mods and decided to change to "LK Inside Passage Water". I will present it the next update.

Chapter 3: A Walk to the Ruins of the Old Stronghold

The "Chapel of our Lord" was built between 1661 to 1666 out of the demolition material of the old romanesque church and material from the old stronghold. Parallel with the extension of the harbour the chapel was refurbished and the grounds were rearranged.

Originally Roman-Catholic, the island congregation changed to Lutheran in the 16th century. Despite several attempts of the roman-catholic church to intervene, this young Lutheran congregation was able to withstand the attacks – after their defeat the catholic church was torn down and a new chapel was built.

Our pastor Akinjele – originating from Nigeria – lives in this small home here in the left front, nearly hidden between the pine-trees. You can see him outside between the pines, enjoying the outlook...
"$Deal"$ Akinjele is – by the way – a name of the Yoruba people and has the meaning: "He fits exactly into the house" ()stsfd()   ;D

Opposite we see one of the vineyards hill down the ruins. Beneath a small torrent flows from a spring just underneath these ruins. The trail up to the remains of the former stronghold starts just where the little torrent passes under the street.

The MTP isn't really a terrain mod, it only has textures. It relies on the default Maxis terrain properties exemplar (which you can find in SimCity1.dat - TGI 6534284A-88CD66E9-00000001). So you'll have to copy that file in a new dat in your plugins and change the settings according to your preferences. I don't recommend changing anything about the terrain, though, your results with it are stunning. I don't think the BOM will match the atmosphere.

Note that both Gobias' and Lowkee's mods have a different texture tiling, so if you use their water mods without the corresponding terrain mods, you may not get the desired effect.

Cheers
Willy

Everyone has such nice things to say and I agree with most of it.  But I don't like the very large boulders.  In some areas they seem out of place.  You may be able to find realistic settings in real life that look similiar but in game I sometimes think those large boulders are too large and unrealistic.
I, too love your MMPing abilities.  You have been able to jam in a lot of realistic details.  It's really amazing how far our beloved game has come over the years.

Thanks for sharing.

@Kergelen: (quote: I like the castle because it seems that some parts are old and others reconstructed.)
The "Finnean Department of Reconstruction and Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage" (DepCNH) plans a step-by-step reconstruction of the significant parts of the castle. Funds are authotized, reconstruction steps are being verified.

@mave94, @vortext: The DepCnH will highly regard the balance of reconstruction and the ruins character of the site.

@Swordmaster: I would like to return the compliment. Your work is indeed inspiring to me.
I decided to leave the terrain as it is; but with the change of the water I'm very happy! The presentation is postponed a little - maybe until I managed GW transparency (didn't continue to work on it...)

@Dantes: :D ... tandinistic ... ;D - let me return with dantenistic ... :thumbsup:

@rooker1: Well, I agree to a certain degree. On some places I'm not completely content with these boulders. Possibly I may combine them more for example with Murimk MMP rocks were applicable...

Chapter 4: Porto Neshold Revisited

Construction works at Porto Nesholt have been successfully completed. The engaged people and companies were able to stick to the time-frame, although there were adds to the approved plans. The calculated costs of 1.35 M$ were slightly exceeded because of these adds. The final costs amounted to 1.57 M$.
As we attach great importance on sustainability in Finland we are committed to reduce waste by applying the 3 R's principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. So the blown and excavated rocks as well as the wood that had to be cut were worked into building material for the retaining walls and the tenements. The buildings are constructed of contaminant-free and environmentally safe materials. They comply to our low energy consumption standards. Residents are happy to live in an ecological environment.

First, have a look on how it looked like before construction works began.

Great update. It is very interesting to see how you deal with the slopes. I like the double retaining wall in the first two pictures, a creative and good looking solution.

Nice work with the retaining walls, using xannepan walls. Fits good in the ladscape.

Some time ago I was looking for a good stairs and these you use seems perfect. Where do you found them?

Beautiful expansion work  &apls  Those new walls look awesome, especially the part with the stairs. Are those namspopof props or what did you use to make them? Any plans to upload  ;D ?

Another awesome update.
I really like the fence along the edge of that cliff by the look out.  It's the finer details that stand out in the end.
Great work!

I know it's been a few days, but congratulations on OSITM, Tandini!

What jumps out at me right away about Porto Nesholt is the fact that it's not built on flat land, but it instead has steep cliffs.  It looks like you've dealt with the unique terrain rather well through the use of walls and fences.  Good work!  :)

@nbvc: Thank you!

@RickD: This is exactly what I want to achieve - creative and good looking solutions for difficult situations.

@Kergelen: Good stairs are indeed rare. So I loted this myselves. I'm working on a set of ' Mediterranean Hillside Plazas and Retaining Walls'

@noahclem: Thanks a lot! The stairs props are 'cnut – Dock stairs short'. And Yes, I plan to release the set. But 'cause I'm a complete newbie in LOTing, it will take some time figuring out all the things to consider...
You may follow my thread "Tandini's Treasure Box (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15713.0)"

@rooker1: Thanks Robin, this is were I spend time - giving attention to finer details...

@metarvo: Thanks for the congrats! Although it's a challenge working on slopes - it makes the scenery so much lively and realistic.

@benedict: Thanks Ben! - It's something to constantly make the weekly examination both at SC4D and Simtropolis. I was happy to find "A Journey Trough Finland" on 3rd place at last week's "Ben's TopTen+10" here at SC4D!

Intermezzo: Nesholt Island Overviews

Here I present to you folks the postponed overviews from the four cardinal directions of Nesholt Island.
You may have a look at the overviews in the outset of this RP in order to notice the changes. As I already wrote, I changed the game water to eliminate the tiling effect. The change had also a slightly positive effect on the gw transparency and the beaches.

As an OSITM-bonus a super-mosaic (3780x2520 – 4MB) of each overview is provided – some stuff to examine ...  ;D

Official functions demand my leaving Nesholt for some time. My son and I are invited to the 'Biennial Porto Finnere Convention' (BPFC) to share in expert conversations concerning sustainability furtherance.

Enjoy the convention. As for this update, I love seeing someone develop a small island. You've managed to fit quite a bit in a condensed space. The water flora looks good, but it seems to taper off too quickly. Almost as though the water is just a blue frame around the picture. The top left of the first picture illustrates what I mean when you compare it to the bottom right. All around, nice work though.

Sorry - no update at the moment - &ops

When I was preparing for screenshots for the 'Porto Finnere - Update', I realized that something strange happened: All the sidewalks disappeared, the ped-mall base-texture changed while some don't show any texture. New placed ped-malls also don't show any base-texture. The following pic gives you a hint:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fc802bab02c5788fa13d8d84c50111892.jpg&hash=11c8fc9422721d8c037cf3bcc182af20a189f3fe)

When I buldoze ped-malls with changed base-texture, a dirt texture remains, even after buldozing developed buildings or plopped LOT's...
I use Paeng's PedMall Parks and Paeng's TextureMod. I can't remember changing anything else then from CF-2tex to OfA-1tex.
Any idea what's the problem? And - should I post this problem elsewhere as a new thread - and when, where?

Any help very much appreciated!

So those are non-transit pedmall tiles, where the base texture changed or disappeared? Have you added, removed, or changed anything in your plugins recently? That's the only thing I can think of off-hand. Are you able to re-plop the pieces or does the underlying dirt texture that you see still act like there's a lot there?
-Matt
Title: Re: A Journey Through Finland - Region Portrait

Hi Matt, they're these ones (moded to Paeng's PedMall Parks - with full pedmall functionality):

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb8fe1a565c7ba178cf4a28cf4097c7a1.jpg&hash=b8362767cdba6bf8b1d6c7e637f675bbf7efe498)

And yes, I'm able to re-plop the pieces as well as to plop whatever else on these tiles. But after buldozing the texture remains...
As I wrote, the only change I did make is with Paeng's TextureMod, where I changed from two wealth to unified look for all wealth types.

Could you expand on this? Which textures did you change exactly and in what file were they located?

From what I've gathered Paengs pedmalls can use the sidewalk textures from his sandstone mod. Given there're only four possible sidewalk textures, it seems like you may have accidently broken something. Which would also explain why the sidewalk has gone missing as well.
Title: Re: A Journey Through Finland - Region Portrait
Post by: Tandini on April 22, 2013, 03:47:26 PM
First of all, thank you very much for your instant input, vortext and Matt.
Well, Paengs Texture Mods allow besides the three-wealth sidewalks two other variations: the ControlFreak (CF) two-wealth and OneforAll (OfA) options. So I didn't change any textures directly but changed from the CF-option to OfA by replacing the 'zzz_CF-2tex_low-med' folder with the 'zzz_OfA-1tex-med' folder, as described in Paengs readme.
Hour ago - for a test - I reverted to the former state, but nothing changed: still the same behavior...
I also re-downloaded the whole package and re-installed it - to be sure to have the original files.
Additionally I checked the whole plugins folder with the date-changed search function (hopefully one can trust this function - I run a Win7-64Bit system) to ensure for no accidentally changes - couldn't find anything...
The problem seems to be elsewhere  ()what()
But now I have to go to sleep - three quarters past midnight  - zzzzz - chrrr - zzzzz - - -
Until this evening...

A Journey Through Finland

Nothing new on the sidewalk texture problem...
Scanning both plugins folders (games and libraries) left me without any result...
So, I fear, I have to reinstall the whole stuff. But not in the very near future. This procedure I want to plan thoroughly. Do you have any suggestions?

As a conclusion of the OSITM induction of "A Journey Through Finland", I thought to present you a region overview, along with some impressions.
It is the Northwestern part of the SC4 San Francisco standard region.

(Again: Remember, clicking on the pics leads you to HD-res pics - Attention: HD-overview 4,4MB!)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F1de45d281caa3dc0aa22a6c791888bab.jpg&hash=bb15b86cfcef5f5ee5efcabef21638d68b4fe6cb) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/042e773398457fe13639a9c5b4258cca.jpg)

I started with a medium tile (in this overview located in the upper middle) with terraforming the inlet that passes "Olde Port". Opposite to Olde Port is where Finn Tandini set his feet 1195 A.D., this place later named "Finn's Landing". Following the gorge inland, a road and railroad bridge crosses the gorge.

"Trästad" is a small rural town, its prosperity mainly based on logging industry

Next in building followed "Oberndorf" and its surroundings. My aim was to 'paint' realistic looking nature. But these 'paintings' were made just when 'girafe' started creating beautiful flora ...

Next I started a small tile in the very Northwestern corner of the region, first terraforming the "Toppi Reservoir". The hydroelectric power plant serves more than sufficient for the needs...

Wonderful sceneries you make. The sidewalk problem worries me, and I wouldn't reinstall everything like you said. I'd do a plugins search, moving out suspicious files and loading the game to see if that impacts it. That way you can narrow down your search until you've found the culprit. It's probably one or two spurious files that you installed accidentally or something.

Cheers

Some time passed since my last entry - ugly things happened . . .  :(

Maybe you heared about a Microsoft patch from April 12 that short after was withdrawn because of reports of crashes of Windows 7  systems - - - this patch killed my system too -  :bomb: - Neither the repair console nor the repair image Microsoft provided could recover it. :'( So I had to completely reinstall the OS . . .
Deliberately I allways configure MS-Win systems in a way, that all private data are stored on a partition on an other HD than the OS-drive - so no private data were lost - and also no SimCity data.

But - I still didn't reinstall SimCity - because of different reasons. So I decided to have a summer break (northern hemisphere). And before continuing, I'd like to work on some LOT-series mainly as a preparation for a new project I have in mind. . .

I'm well aware that this thread may become inactive - but sometimes there is more important in life that matters . . .

For the time being, I'd like to thank you all for your warm welcome, for your
enthusiasm and your encouragement during
this 'Journey Through Finland'. It was a great time - and I think, more great times will come.

So - bye for now  -  'til comeback . . .
