Title: SC4 Devotion Requests
Post by: jeronij on November 05, 2006, 05:37:37 AM
Post all your site´s related requests to this forum. Let us know which is this functionality you are missing, this one that should be improved, what should be added and what should be removed in the site.

Hi Jeronij,

Good initiative.

I am missing a tutorial to post pictures.

&hlp (great smily) Furthermore I would like to add my avatar but it is a pic on my PC not on a website. Maybe you could find a solution to that too.
:newbie: (= this reminds me of my 1,5 year old son)

Have fun!

Hi again,

NN, your request about how to post pics tutorial will be fullfilled as soon as possible  ;)

You should be able to upload your avatar from your computer now. For some weird reason, the option was disbled for registered members....  ???

Hello, jeronij...

Mine is but a tiny request/question.  I was wondering if you could have some default smileys available for your signature.  Is it possible?  And is there an easier way than to upload a smiley to Photobucket or something and then paste it in your signature (because that takes up characters).  Just wondering...
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion Requests
Post by: Alfred.Jones on November 13, 2006, 12:35:08 AM
@Masochist, to put smileys into you signature you just copy and paste the smiley code into the signature area. I posted a thread with all the smiley codes here (http://sc4devotion.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=27&topic=44.0).

Hope that helps ;)

Is it possible to activate the QUICK REPLY Feature of the SMF Board please ... ask Andreas for help if you cannot get that going. ;)

Not so much a request as a "nice one"...the quick edit tool for posts is really nifty..just needs to be a bit more obvious if that's possible.

Hello to all,

Colyn, you need to configure your profile and set up your preferences (including if you want to see the quick reply box  ;) ). Take your time to configure your profile, there are many many options !!!. Quick Reply is found in the "Look and Layout Preferences" section  ;D  . Oh, and it is good to know that Andreas has some experience with SMF !!!, I am sure I would need his help  ::)

callagrafx, I am sorry my friend, but I dont understand exactly what you mean  :-[ . Do you mean to change the position of the Quick Reply box, or are you talking about some of the editing post icons ?¿ . I havent made any changes to the forums template yet, but I guess both things could be made.

Can we get two nmore forums in the BSC Place please ...

1. BSC Chit Chat .... for off topic banter by the team.

2. BSC Plays the Game .... for our Game experiments and results.

They need not be private as others may want to join in.

Thanks.

A nice forum here, jeronij, but I seem to be having problems with lag on these forums... it lags when scrolling, which I suspect has something to do with the sidebar. :P

Also, I dunno if the forums could be made a little... less intimidating, it's kinda overwhelming for a newbie to these forums, like myself.  :P

Otherwise, this is a great forum.

Hi SA, nice to see you again

I havent noticed any lags when scrolling, but cant you tell me which browser and in which pages is this happening ?¿

About the "intimidating" forums .... ??? .....intimidating ?¿ why?   ;D

If you mean that there are too many forums, you can collapse the forums boards you are not interested to see, and you can also set up your profile to adjust them to your preferences.

I am very interested in knowig what "intimidating" means (in this context)  ;D

Again welcome and enjoy your stay  ;)

It seems to have resolved itself, oddly enough, but I suspect it could just be a large number of images.

Intimidating, as in too many forums. :P That's pretty much it. I didn't know you could collapse some forums. :P

There seems to be a problem with the server time ... I have set my preference to GMT +2 and it says it 01;35 or something and it is now 07:35 ... I use 24hr time.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion Requests
Post by: Colyn on December 19, 2006, 11:46:36 PM
Ok the time issue is resolved ... the offset number in the user profile is not a GMT offset ... you have to figure out how many hours to add to get to your own right time ... for people on the CAT and CET timezone this number is 8.

i was wondering how do you add html tables i ahve tried it in my SCTF tech data sheet but it comes out as a big list it should look something like the table at the link below or what I would like to know how to do it.

Be patient ... we need to activate that feature in the POSTING interface ... currently we are busy getting to grips with what is running ... so in time we will get to that for you ... HTML Tables can really drag the board down if not applied properly so you have to give us some time to configure it properly.

ok i will try to remove those particular tables. Thank you for you assistance.

sometimes i push things to far lol

The tables are in the post at ST and are needed for the info.

Edit: A note at each of the table locations now refers to the original article at ST

One question and/or request for the file download section. Is there a way to search for a specific file or a person's files? I may have just overlooked it (if that is the case is it possible to make it more noticeable) but if it doesn't exist, would it be possible to add that feature? Thanks again for all the developments so far.

I would like to make a request on behalf of uploaders.

For our descriptions can you make it possible for us to be able to use ENTER and colors or bold at minimum?  This will make descriptions easier to read especially when there is an installation tutorial needed.

Also, is there a way to veiw the second picture uploaded?

Hello to all,

threestooges and jplumbey, your requests are quite logical and make sense. I think I wrote already somewhere, but I´ll inform you again  ;)

the actual "exchange" is an attempt I did to give this site this quite basic (for our community) feature, and since this is my first web project program ever, it took me quite a loooong time to finish what we have actually. Add these features would be quite difficult for me, and would consume a time that I dont have  &mmm .

Fortunately for all, the BSC Team has been developing an exchange tool, which will soon be installed here, and which will give you all the features you are asking for, and many many more  ;D . It is just a matter of time. There are actually some other more urgents matters to deal with, but the exchange is also ver important for us all, so you can be sure that it will be added as soon as possible.
In the meantime, you can add or not files to the exchange. As you prefere. Any existing file in the actual exchange will be moved to the new exchange once it is ready, and no data will be lost. Once your files are in the new exchange, you will be able to edit them and of course, see the second picture, add a comment, a vote, etcetera, etcetera...

Dont think you wont have a great exchange soon  ;D !!!

Thanks for the reply jeronij.

I had one other request about uploads.  Some of the members on NHP, like to create large maps (Beskhu3epnm).  These maps right now are starting to be limited by the maximum size allowed to be uploaded to STEX and this site which is 10 mb or so.  Invermere Valley was 9.6mb in size and we are able to create some maps that are larger.  With many of these maps we will also have smaller options to upload aswell, like with Invermere Valley we are about to start on a mini series taking specific parts of the map and making mini regions.  If it is possible are you able to allow a maximum upload of 12.5mb or 15mb per file?  That way wouanagaine can have a little bit more leeway with adding information, like including the config.bmp in an SC4M and other things that we may have in store for SC4TF and SC4Mapper.  Right now the 10mb is the limiting factor for us.  If this is not possible or it is just simply too big that is not a problem either it is just a wish from our end.

Thanks again in advance,

JPlumbley

Unfortunately this time I will have to say no. This limitation is set by the server and I can not increase it. The initial max size was 2,5MB and one of the first things I did was to contact my hosting services to increase it to the maximum for my account type. The maximum is 10MB  &mmm

@Vab423: I had the same problem (and others ;). They all got solved when I logged on manually (overtyping my ID and password in the browser) in stead if automatically, just for one time.
It seems to be caused by a bad cookie. See Teacat's signature for advise where to dunk that!  :D

There are some links which bring you to an unwrapped version of the forums. Usually the ones in the last messages list in the main page, and some email notifications. We are working on it. In the meantime, use the browser's back button or type www.sc4devotion.com in the browser's url. We will solve this issue as soon as possible.

Login out an in may solve some other issues related to member's accesibility to determinate areas in the site. Do it if this is your case.

We do apologize for the inconveniences, which will be solved as soon as possible.

I notices once I am viewing the forum, it only has it across the top of the page. All you get is the page numbers and the Go Up linkie.  Where as if you are the forum page that has all the topics for a specific forum it is there.   ::)

jeronij,

I can see them at the both of the pages when I enter a specific forum, just not in the individual topic pages. If you look at the top of the page in here you will see the tree, it is just not at the bottom.  I couldn't find a setting for them in the profile look and feel prefs.  Though I did find the set up for the quick reply....lol.  It may just not be an option.  That is ok, it was just a request.  No harm, no foul.   ;D

Colyn,

Can you add another quick link in the header?
Next to the links:
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

I would appreciate to have a link called: Show new replies in your thread...... with a link to the various thread I may have started.

The reason is that the Forums does have levels and sometimes at a deeper level I have a thread started (such as Canal texture request in the BSC Forum). This one is difficult to find and I guess with more and more members this will be difficult for me and others as well especially some of the moderators.
What do you think?

I have a request regarding the asthetics of the site.
The banner at the top and the bottom really needs to be changed.  &mmm
Having a banner like that on a black background while the forums are all blue and white makes the site look cluttered and messy.
I think that if whoever's in charge of it just made a new banner, one that uses the same color sceme as the forums, the site would look alot more professional, and possibly attract more people.
Also, the 3d .Gif at the bottom is kinda tacky  :p

Just my 2 cents.

Jeroni's done a great job in tying these systems together...The forum software is a bit limiting in it's colour scheme and takes some doing to change it...bear in mind that the forum and content systems are working perfectly and you can post/download from the LEX..that was the main focus, rather than a pretty yet semi-functional site.  These things take time, so please bear with him on this.

The BSC Cleanitol support thread is here : http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=126.0

Anyway, just hit the '...' button and point the txt file providing with the tool, it will move any of the non SC4 related files into MyDocs\SimCity4\BSC_Cleanitol folder
I have also upload a BSC mega pack list on the LEX, download it and use it instead of the original file. it will point you what you're missing and what you have in double to get the best of the BSC stuffs

If you cant find an appropriate place for your thread, it is because your thread's idea does not belong to this site  ::)

Chat rooms at SC4D:  Not for the moment. I want the members to be able to have the time to think before they say anything  ;) , and also be able to track who and what people post. I have seen enough negative comments about chatrooms, that I dont think they would be really a benefeit for the site.

I don't know if I've missed it, or if it isn't implemented yet, but a free-text search on the LEX would be a good idea - especially as many BATters are migrating here from Simtropolis...

It's nice to be able to type in "UK" and grab a list of all uploads with, say, "UK" in their name.

Here's one: Private Topics on this site are good for confidential one-to-one discussion in this site.

There are several pivate topics working actually in the site. If you mean that any member should be able to set his/her own PB, well, the forums software does not have that feature  ::)

I don't know if I've missed it, or if it isn't implemented yet, but a free-text search on the LEX would be a good idea - especially as many BATters are migrating here from Simtropolis...

It's nice to be able to type in "UK" and grab a list of all uploads with, say, "UK" in their name.

This one is in the to-do list already.... just a matter of time  ;)

Would there be a way to bookmark your favorite threads so they show up on your home page differently for each user?  My current bookmarks folder in my browser is packed with all kinds of other places I go to.

It's like having favourites, but within the window of SC4D. The same feature as on ST, on the ST forum page, in the left column (under the list of persons chatting).

I was wondering if there is any way to get a spell checker added. There are times when I am browsing the threads and notice in posts I have made typo's in stuff that has been posted which means an Edit or th thread being bumped bbecause I edit it. I have seen this feature on another site that uses the same style as this site and that feature is an additional button beside the (post/preview) ones we use to post with.

Its just a thought - no worries if we can't I'll just have to be more vigilant with what I post ;)

I'd love to be able to do a search on the LEX by description/title rather than simply author or selecting a category. Quite often, I've had to search through a few similar categories to find what I'm looking for (as I didn't know the author), where a simple keyword search would likely have saved much time. Hopefully this is doable, if not I guess I'll live.  :P

Hi Beebs

A boolean search is on the to do list, but I believe Colyn and Relic's RL is a bit daft at the moment, so all development is in a kind of limbo.  There were also issues about short searches causing system resource slowdowns (i.e. single character search) and we're looking at ways around that.

Hopefully it won't be too long in the offering, but Colyn can better inform you of that when he's next around.

I have not a request bu a suggestion:

I would love to have a small text - windows on the forum pages that shows the recently added content of the LEX without having to log on there.

For me as a member it would have the advantage that I don't have to type username and password for the LEx to check if there is any new upload.

For SC4D itself it may save quite some bandwith as people (like me) don't) have to log on for checking the news of the LEX.

As an alternative a button opening an info box would be nice, too

Take care

Bernhard

It would be grateful if you expand the scope of the site, because i wish for this site to be as popular as youtube and official gaming forums like ign and gamespy.

firstly, i would like to see interviews being made exclusively for this site, so more members will be attracted to this site and think 'wow, this site is interesting'.

perhaps it would be grateful for coverage of sim games to be expanded. I think it will not hurt to add the sims 1 and 2, trainz and other simcities like sc-ds and societies. perhaps monte cristo games like city life and future city simulation developments should be covered.

i think that if you provide city and people simulation resources at a wider scale, more visitors would want to come here and perhaps make a donation to show their support.

you can always keep the old name of SimCity 4 Devotion because if it becomes as popular as youtube and ebay, everyone will remember this site and you for generations. please do what you can to make this site even better, it won't hurt to consider your members suggestions. i really support most of the suggestions posted here.

sorry that i am currently under 18 so i cannot have paypal yet, but i will try and remain devoted to your dedicated city simulation site and i thank you very very much for your creations.

well done jeronij and never give up your dreams,

Well, the problem there is that the file size would be way too large--we'd be talking about a 40-50MB file easily.  It would eat up bandwidth like crazy, considering the NAM stuff is continually updated and people would have to redownload. ;)  The NAM also went to a modular format (with the core file, NAM Essentials and the various additions) so that we can release new components much sooner as an individual package, rather than waiting a few months for enough stuff to be ready to merit releasing another 30MB file (as had been done in the past).  Hence how the SAM was able to be released now, rather than 6 months from now.  And with the install order--it's just like how you have to install the game before the expansion pack.  Think of the NAM as the "game" and the NAM Essentials file, SAM, bridges, etc. as expansions.

Hope that at least partially answers your question.  Maybe this warrants an FAQ thread. :)

While I applaud your vision and your hopes that this site continue to flourish, it seems that most of your suggestions go against what I believe were the reasons why SC4D was created in the first place--a place where SC4 players and fans could unite through their work and shared passion for the game. While we all here at SC4D may be fans of other games, whether in the SimCity/Maxis/EA lineage or not, I don't think those games were ever to be a part of the scope of the site, at least not from how I've understood it, nor were mass popularity or recognition.

It would make things a lot easier if, where people list the dependencies for their lots, if those could simply be directly linked to the file. This way, when a lot tells me I need a dependency I can just click to download it instead of hunting around for another 5-10 minutes.

Also, I'd like to second the other suggestion of being able to search by name, since nobody lists the author of the dependencies they're using.

I mean I wish to be able to make forum topics, sections, or threads be invisible to me.. for example when I log on I usually hit the "show posts since your last visit" or whatever its called.. Then I get 5-20 pages of stuff.. a large number of which are in threads and sections that are a waste.. like an "alphabet game" or a a lot of moved or old MD's or a picture competition etc etc.. Minimizing groups doesn't do any good at all.. it just hides the home page and has no value for any other items like "unread" or "search" or whatever.. in short it really is pretty useless..

I'd like to go to my "profile" and see a list of topics from the forums and be able to mark them individually by topic as "ignor" and the site wouild treat my logon as though those topics don't even exist. If I wanted to read something I marked "ignor" I'd have to go back to my profile and "unmark" it.

JRJ I do occasionally mark a thread to "subscribe" but I do read a LOT of misc stuff on SC4D  .. way more than I wish to subscribe to.. the unread does well for me but I'd like not to get  6 pages or more of posts.. hehe...

do what JeroniJ said then. subscribe to topics/threads you want to be notified of, and then they appear in your usercp when there are new posts

you cant hide things from search and posts since last visit

I don't want to do it "since last visit".. I want to do it PERMANENTLY until I reset the "ignor" switch for some reason.

I've already indicated that the "subscribe" doesn't really do what I want.

If it can't be done, it can't be done.. just say so hehe..
but it doesn't alter the desire to have it.. :)

now, when clicking on a nick you have the option to view his posts instead of the threads/topics he/she posted in, I like to see that reversed,
Obviously it would be nice if there's some sort of indicator that shows if there are new reactions in that thread since your last vissit.
It is more relevant to see what topics a person has replied to then to view posts/reactions a user made.
So I instandly wanna know if there was a reaction after mine just so I won't forget to answer.
Besides that, this is a wonderfull comunity and I am proud to be a part of it.

Hey Wrightguy0, the LEX search is like it is for a reason, more advanced search functions cause strain on the server which it cant handle...

the picture thing is easy... as long as you know how to upload a picture to photobucket/imageshack/etc... then all you need is the direct link for the uploaded picture and insert it inbetween

for example brings up this image:

There is a number of topics that explain this around and about (take the link to Tutorials in my signature, there will be one there)...

If you need help uploading a picture to the internet, that is explained in another tutorial somewhere (I will find it if you ask)

The BSC Lex won't be changing much any time soon, the search function has been much requested and I'm sure will be one of the next additions, but the guys who coded the LEX are all AWOL with RLS problems at the moment. The picture posting function is about as friendly as it's going to get too, it just isn't feasible for your pictures to be hosted on the site because they would gobble up the bandwidth in record time, and that is about the only way I can see the function being any easier. If you're struggling with it, take a a look here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=33.0) for a tutorial.

Also when someone edits a post that hasn't been posted in since, the blue "new" button still appears, would it be possible to have a blue "edit" button?

upload your picture to imageshack/photobucket and then take the direct link and insert it between

One thing I noticed sinced I started downloading content other than transit stuff, is how many dependancies there are you have to go running around to look for (I know about the dependancy help page on the LEX, which is a terrific help btw, but even that has a downside that sometimes in a lot description the name of the dependacie is slightly different to the name on the list so Ctrl+f won't find it, and when you look manually they sometimes similar named ones)
(I have never uploaded or anything on the LEX so I have no idea how it's done) On each lot description there's a dependancy box, where you type the URL of the dependancy then it goes and finds the name of dependancy and uses that in the lot description (to avoid different names in different places, or if that's not possible just the name and the URL) So when a user goes to download the lot that needs dependancy pack A B and C (example) A web-version-cleanitol-type-of-thing scans your computer if you have the dependancies already, if you have pack A but not B and C, a box appears asking if you want to download them and provides a link to the description of the dependancy.

Just an [long] idea, but I redownloaded my plugins folder because I got mixed up with dependancies.

Always a fun and informative site to visit, and though I don't get to post often, I actually do visit every day along with ST.

However, since the recent upgrade, I have notice a minor change that keeps me stumped...there doesn't seem to be a direct link anywhere on the forum pages back the main Devotion page or to the LEX.  Perhaps I'm too inept to find them now, when previously, these had colorful image links at the top of the page.

I know, I could always return to typing in the full address, or drag open the browser favorites links, but there was an efficient convenience in being able to simply click from the top, or to right-click-into-new-window when a refence on the boards was made and I wanted to peek into the LEX without losing my reading place.

Maybe...hopefully...possibly the fast links will come back, as the new theme settles in.

And as always, thanks for all the excellent work here.

-Odainsaker: As I understand, the previous forum style will return as the updates are completed. The major upgrades have been finished but there still seem to be minor tweaks left. Returning the forum style to the version you were used to is one of them. Until then, read this thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=5539.0) and it'll show you your options.

I have a problem regarding the BSC File Exchange, I don't know if it has been posted already. There is something I don't like about the download history. Actually, I think it is a great feature and really gives an overview about what I already have and what not. But there doesn't seem to be a way to delete the whole history - I always have to click on single links which is very annoying and takes a while  &mmm

There isn't a simple way to delete your download history and it is there so that you can see if anything has been updated.

Not sure where to report this sort of things, but navigation buttons (graphic of them, that is) don't work /show properly in browsers other than IE.

I think the new homepage is great, just a few things, there isn't a link to the wiki, and the same as SimFox.
Another thing is it possible to have a bookmarks bar at the top of the forum (just 20 pixels tall or something) so that we can access threads we visit often really easy(this could be something you subscribe to, which I would have done btw if my dad could remember his details for PayPal :) )

Hello to all,

Sorry for the lack of reply... but I am quite busy with the technical and graphical changes....which do not affect the home page only ;). The new big buttons are looking too big in the page, so I will probably change them to something smaller... you will see the progress as you visit the homepage  ;D

True is that the main page has been a bit abbandoned lately, so it was time to work on in it and try to improve the site's experice  ;) . Now many "outsider" pages has been merged into the site's style; the NAM page, the Dependencies page, the EA support files page...

It is a pity that Firefox handles the indents in a different way that IE does (shoudnt HTML code show the same in a given browser compiling it ?¿  ::)  $%Grinno$% ) because that limits me to the shape and alignement of buttons that I can use, but the final result is not that bad I guess  ;D

If you dont still see the favico, reload your broser (Ctrl+F5). Still not?, then empty your IE Internet temporary files. If you still cant see it, make sure you are at SC4D and your computer screen is turned on  ;)  :D  :D

Something that jumped into my mind;

Wasn't there a function in which you rate a thread (1 - 5 stars) a few weeks/months ago? Did this functionality disappear with the update? Either way, I was wondering if it could be re-initiated, as I found it a good alternative to giving karma to people.

Just wondering, not sure if its my settings or the site's but whenever I click a link in a SC4Devotion forum it opens in a new window, unless I use middle click, in which case it opens in a new tab.

Also, a cookie for the LEX would be cool too, save me from having to go to the password screen every time.

Neither of these are big deals, but they would make everything just that tiny little bit easier. Thank you Jeroni and the staff for everything so far.

I am not sure if this already exists in some form, but I don't see a way to do it. Many of the threads here are very long. Is it possible to do a "search" on only the thread you are reading? I can use the "site search" for broad topics, and I can easily use "cntrl-f" for the page I'm on  but that is very lengthy for some of the huge threads here.

Yes, it is. In the upper right corner of the thread display, you'll find a search box - use that for searching within the thread that you're currently reading.

Yeah, the search box is "context-sensitive", so to speak - it's basically an advanced search with predefined search parameters, adapted to the content that is currently displayed. Pretty nifty, if you ask me. :)

I'm trying to work on that iPhone mod after it corrupted. Epic shame.

Also, on to the request part of this post, maybe an upgrade can be arranged for the forums? We're a full six patches behind leaving massive security gaps. SMF 1.1.11 fixed a ton of them. Instead of bringing the site down for hours or days at a time like the upgrade to 1.1.5, there should be an option to install a small patch in the admin panel, then make the manual file edits as needed.

Not really important but it is kind of annoying, on the lex when you open a description it always loads the description in a new window, but if you already had a description open then it closes that one. If the links to open the description weren't done by javascript then it would be possible to use the mouse wheel to open it in a new tab.

I'm not sure about others but if I'm just browsing an exchange then I open all the descriptions that interest me in new tabs then go through all the tabs and see the details and download the lot.

FWIW I agree, though not a big deal, it is one thing I prefer about the STEX: being able to open new tabs for all that I'm interested in. Although I have my browser setup to open the LEX products in a new tab, if I then click on another item on the original window it replaces this tab. Also I have to re-enter my info to the LEX every single time I use it, even if I used it thirty seconds ago whereas SC4D recognises me and loads up automatically, is there anyway to achieve this with the LEX?
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion Requests
Post by: Jonathan on January 06, 2010, 09:15:11 AM
The LEX does remember you, just it won't redirect you past the logon page automatically (annoying but not as annoying as have to click logon twice everytime you access the LEX) Just change http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/Default.htm to http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm.

If you do need to login then it will show you the monkey. Otherwise it will just show the LEX.

Please don't misunderstand me the LEX is a great exchange and the usability is mostly great, just theres a few minor things that would make it perfect.

I'm not sure if this has already been suggested, but has anyone considered a SC4D chat? It could be a good way to get quick and thorough help with any forum or LEX/BSC (I havn't learned the difference!  $%Grinno$%), and just a fun way to interact and talk with the other members.
Title: Re: SC4 Devotion Requests
Post by: xxdita on January 17, 2010, 09:42:39 PM
Chat has been suggested numerous times, and though it would probably be a simple program to install on the server, the problems it could create quite simply aren't worth it.

First of all, there's the bandwidth that chat wouid eat up. I'm sure this isn't as big a deal as it once was, but it's still a factor.

Secondly, chat would require staff members actively involved at all times, to monitor the conversation as a whole, make sure there's no spam or other abuses, and deal with any infractions immediately. So chat would take our attentions away from moderating and helping in the forums, and more importantly, away from our own projects, and playing the game. I think it's safe to say that none of the staff is interested in the constant vigil that a chat feature would require of us.

The forums here are set up so that anyone can ask just about anything they need to, be it about creating or using Custom Content, the game itself, and anything to do with either. So even if it's a hardware or Operating System question, you're likely to get help fairly quickly, generally by someone that is quite knowledgable in the particular area. And even better, it's recorded in the forum, so that the next person that comes along with the same question can get their answer that much faster by searching. Unlike chat, which isn't logged for general use, so you often have the same questions asked numerous times a day.

What I love about SC4D is that it's probably the most technical SC4 site on the net, with so much of the forums dedicated to furthering what we do to improve this game. Sure, we have forum games, which can become a more social parlor, just for kicks, but the heart of SC4D is creating Custom Content, and putting it to use.

While we do recognize the possibility of game-changing breakthroughs happening because of the real-time interaction, these things are done much more effectively in a one-on-one MSN convo, without the distractions of an audience.

If there's something you don't feel that you want to post in the forums, any of the staff-members here are more than happy to help you via PM's. Although I do recommend searching the forums a bit first, to try to find your own answer. It's probably best to either PM a staff member that is currently online for the fastest solution, although each of us has our own specialty.

For new members unfamiliar with the staff, simply checking the Staff List button at the top of every page will give you an idea of each Staff Member's specialty, by showing which boards they moderate. Although posting a question in the appropriate forum board, where anyone that knows the answer can help may be even faster than that. And i really doubt that any SC4D member would mind a question. So if there's something you see in a Development thread or Mayor Diary that you have a question about, just ask in that thread or send a PM to the person who's project it is. I can't think of anyone here that would give you a rude answer in return.

Well, I won't turn it into a big debate, but chat does not really need to be installed right on to the site. I myself use Mibbit (http://mibbit.com/) for other chat purposes, and I find it quite useful. Getting set up tere takes about 3-5 minuets, and I could set up an SC4D chan (or room, I think they mean the same thing) there in 5-7 minuets. Maintaining the channel/room could be done by me and maybe 4 ops (basically chat mods). Not that I think it would be a big problem, given our responsible and mature community.  ;)

But as I said, I am only suggesting, not here to debate and argue.

I don't know wether this has already been suggested or is possible to implement (and how hard it is), but I was just wondering wether it would be possible to make the team badges that certain site members have link to the root board.

eg: NAM team badge links to NAM place, ELBT badge links to ELBT place, etc.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to link from the badge.
However, I did manage to get a link from the membergroup name above the badge...

For now I've only linked EBLT Team to the EBLT Place.
Let me know if this is good enough, and I'll link the other teams as well. :)

Too bad, then I guess the way you suggested is the next best thing. (just to clarify: I really appreciate that the site admins listen to the suggestions made by other members. I'm just a tad dissapointed that it's not possible the way I imagined it

img this is built in to the software or something(i dont know much about this im afraid)

could we introduce a small box at the top and bottom of each page that has (similar to the jump to box) each page say 1-45 for example which links to that page?
it would save time browsing by 3 pages.

hope this is understandable to read :D

thanks

You can edit the URL address directly for that.

E.g. the address for this topic (without reference to a specific post) is:
http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6.0

If you go to page 10 (this page), you'd get this address:
http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6.180

The number after the period in the topic number is the sequential post number within the topic.
Now, since there are 20 posts per page:

Any number between 0 and 19 would refer to page 1.
Any number between 180 and 199 would refer to page 10.

What I do, if e.g. I want to get to page 5, is to multiply 5 by 20 and subtract 10: 5×20-10 = 90.
Thus, see where this takes you:

I wish I had of known about this before.  I won't tell you how I got to certain pages in huge threads before. ::)

I have a request regarding image resolutions.

Any chance of increasing the width restrictions any time soon? Currently 1024 pixels is recommended as the maximum, but could this be pushed to 1200 or 1280 pixels? I think most monitors can support this resolution the way most monitors could support 1024 pixels when the site went live in 2006.

A slightly wider limit would help discourage external linking, and keep the flow of the forum more fluent. Not sure what this would do the site's bandwidth as most images are hosted off-site anyway.

Thanks for your time SC4D staff.

Well, people keep posting larger images frequently, and in many cases, the suggested limit is not enforced by the moderators anyway - edits usually happen only if a really large image has been posted. I still think that 1024x768 is a nice size for showing quite a few details, while keeping the loading time within a reasonable timeframe. Even with fast DSL or cable, a page full or large screenshot takes quite a while to load (even more so if someone used huge PNG images), so 1024x768 has always been some kind of compromise.

And the 1024x768 limit is also better for those of us that are viewing the site from a mobile device (smartphone, iPad, that sort of stuff)

On my laptop's 1280 pixel wide screen, 1024 is the width from the margin of the post, to nearly the edge of the screen. Any larger and the image disappears away out the side of the browser.

Hey I'm wondering if we might be able to get HTML embeds approved for members.

For example I want to post all these images in the highways thread http://imgur.com/a/oiGZc#0 but going one by one will clutter up the thread, and could make it take a long time for the page to load.

Things would be so much easier if I could do a HTML embed like this: http://community.simtropolis.com/topic/21096-show-us-your-highways/?p=1423757 as all the images are in one place. Whenever I enter the HTML embed here nothing happens... and I think that's because only admins are currently able to do it.

I'd love to see this feature added to SC4D!

Hm, yeah that would be nice indeed.
But I certainly would need a tutorial for the dumb in order to be able to set one up!

Its certainly something I can't do here, and I got curious and tried it in my own site and I can't do it there either, did a bit of research and found it can be used to hack into a website and do nasty things, so not being able to do this is part of my site setup and I would have to do a lot of background tweaking of the various security programs to allow someone to do this, so if it is restricted to admin staff here at SC4D I'd quite understand why, Its not something I plan on changing on my own site due to the security implications.

Indeed the security implications are the reason it shouldn't be enabled. Maybe as a perk of being a subscriber? But even then, it's a high-risk.

I noticed that on the user's avatar there are those symbols for two genders - derived from the astronomic symbols for mars and venus - so mars in light blue and venus in light pink.

How to say ... it's a little bit old fashioned. Instead for the male gender a hammer and for the female gender a baby carriage would be more progressive.

Jokes apart.

I like to imagine my gender as something floating. Sometime it's like the sea, sometimes it's like the mountains. A symbol is much to static to describe my gender. It is full of surprises.

Could I have an animated bouquet of flowers for my gender?

Something like this:  ()flower()

Second try to put jokes apart:

Suggestion is: to update the symbols with something more modern, unburdened, not refering to old Gods of war and fertility.

Thank you.

A text field for pronouns, maybe? I think is more useful and flexible, without much technical hassle to implement. Suffice to say, I'll lobby for this on ST, where having it would ease the treatment of new members a lot.

"Mark all as read" feature has recently acquired an "Are you sure?" popup box. Is there a preference setting somewhere that I can turn that off? I visit unread forum posts every morning, maybe open one "new" link in a new tab, and then mark all as read. The extra dialog is extra wait time and an unnecessary click (for me).

Thanks
