Title: NUTs - a not so young LE and b.a.t. Team
Post by: tooheys on March 23, 2008, 12:29:16 AM
Well, we are certainly not the newest kids on the block, literally. NUTs (Nobody Under Thirty) is a collaboration between Jmouse (Joan), Paroch (Paul) and tooheys (Dave), all of whom have only just crept past the 30yr mark  $%Grinno$%.

We have all worked with the LE and Joan has also recently started BATing.

Here we will show our LE work, and we hope you will also visit Joan's BAT thread as it is turning into a great tutorial for those new to the art.

Paul is also in the process of applying for LEX candidacy and I hope to follow shortly.

Hope you enjoy what we come up with, and as always your constructive feedback is always welcome.

So here are a few pics of an overhaul we recently did on the chi mansion. A bit of a challenge we set ourselves and these are the results of our individual efforts

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg210.imageshack.us%2Fimg210%2F8941%2Fimg0005vw0.jpg&hash=f26a31ee3fc4c4fba299a2e062cbb3c39ec21307)

Also on the table at the moment is a team effort to rework some of the docks available for the game. Currently, we are experimenting with PEG's CDK3 as a base. Still a lot to do, but here's a pic to show you what we have in mind.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F9099%2Fnewcityjan3311206165261om5.jpg&hash=3be68ff4b1e5feb93623630ea46562357bac718b)

So there you go, NUTs it is.

Hope you join us on the journey ahead.

Creative team name.

Well, since I cannot "welcome" you to the community, good luck on the new team.

Lovely work! Not really sure about the carprops in front of the garage in the first picture, tho.

Nice work on the lot variety. This certainly will be a good team. I've seen the individual work, and I'm really looking forward to what the combined efforts will yield. Good luck to you NUTs.
-edit- I thought I should also add, in response to FrankU's post that the third pic, while very full, looks great and reminds me of a place around here (house is different but the yard is filled like that. I'd love to help out if I can (butfor the age difference of course).

No NUTs no glory!

Nice developments and relottings here!
On the other hand: I would never allow someone to build these garages in front of these beautiful mansions. I think they should be behind the houses somewhere in the gardens.
I think the second is brilliant, but maybe a bit too cluttered?
The thirdis definitely too clutterd. Maybe you make the compound lager?

Harbour lots: nice!

First of all, thanks to those that have wished us NUTs well.

We are having a bit of fun testing our limits at the moment, the Chi Mansion was just one of those "tests". A set building prop and a max lot size. It's interesting to see the different outcomes. With a good team, some predefined rules and no collaboration, you can easily come up with a nice set of lots, with each team member's individual traits showing thru.

Actually, there's a test for you. Three Chi Mansions, three NUTs. Can anyone work out who did what??

I am closing my LE thread and bringing it over here. At the moment the cricket ground is my major project, but it also belongs to the NUTs team, primarily because of the suggestions and help behind the scenes that you can't see.

The latest version below is currently with xxdita for a preliminary check before I get it ready, with a lot of help, for LEX candicacy.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg409.imageshack.us%2Fimg409%2F9549%2Fnewcityjan1331120651833rp1.jpg&hash=72cf56739bc68ff41a14b9e4dc252b24f4307ee0)

Dependancies aren't too bad:

BSC Mega Props - CAL Vol01
BSC_TexturePack_Cycledogg_V 01
CAL_Crickettextures
CAL_Willow_Tree
PEG-CDK_4x3_Marina-Docks_101

And I think all of Cal's packs are in the Mega Prop pack which simplifies things further.

Prop placement (trees etc) may change, but pretty much what you see will appear one way or another in the final version.

Diggis is currently looking at the possibility of making some curved fences to place around the cricket field.  and with these I have some ideas for a 2nd version.

Hopefully my fellow NUTs will drop by shortly to say hello  ;) and totally contradict everything I just said  ::).

And we hope to have some more dock pic's soon.

Cheers

Dave

Congrats on the new team.  Are you allowed to use stuff I do for you as I am only 28.  $%Grinno$%

I've started work on this, and if you don't mind, will post some pics up when I have something to show.  I'll do up a full curved fence for this ground, then do some smaller sections to match the paths you are using so you can expand grounds as you wish.

I have no idea what cricket is, beside that its a sport, or how it is played; but what I do know is that the pitch looks extraordinary!

Diggis, consider yourself a project consultant.

The pays no good, but all us "old" people will be thinking "what a helpful young chap that Diggis is"  :D

Hey, post away, can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks again

caspervg, thanks. If I could explain the game in 10 words or less I would  %confuso Best if you google it  ;)

Dave

Edit: While I mentioned xxdita in my last post, I didn't tell you about the great help, feedback and offers of support that Nate (xxdita) has provided to me. Thanks

Well I had a chance to have a little play and here is the result.  526 palings...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg187.imageshack.us%2Fimg187%2F1159%2Ffencedraftla2.jpg&hash=49a19a543af497c28eb1f6a2287da35133a5acc3)

A close up.  Not sure but I think some of the details might go missing.  I'll see what happens when Cal renders it for me.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg253.imageshack.us%2Fimg253%2F5485%2Ffencedraftcloseuprg7.jpg&hash=c1e05c3f2484c0403be178124d6ea02a8e2e226d)

I want to throw some gates in there, and maybe a couple of broken palings.  Some textures and it's off to Cal.

First of all, many thanks to everyone who has stopped by, offered encouragement and contributed to the cricket pitch project. You're the best! Technically it is a team effort, but it has been Dave' work from the very beginning.

Individually, our styles are very different as you can see in the test lots above, and each one of us brings a different area of expertise to the table. One thing we all do, however, is mix in plenty of fun and laughs.

So I hope you'll join the fun
and enter our little "guess the guilty party" contest. Who knows, there just might be a nutty little prize in it for the winner!  And tell us what you think of each lot while you're about it. :)

Later...
Joan

The third NUT checking in here.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.  And interesting to see you guess who did which Chi Mansion.  I'll give you a clue...... the terrain mods (or lack of them) are visible in our related MDs.....  I'll leave it to one of the others to kill the suspense!

And Pat, 29, LOL! ;)

As for what's on my part of the drawing board.......

-The market lots have been submitted for LEX candidacy but I know that there is a shortage of scrutineers at the moment, so watch this space.

-I've been making ploppable landmarks from Haarlemgold and Vanderaap's Dutch BATs to overcome some issues in West End's Amsterdam inspired city.  I don't see much call for these in the community at large, so don't plan to release them....... but if there are any fans of Dutch BATs out there who would find them of use let me know and I'll send them to you.  You'll need the original BATs plus some assorted popular prop packs.

-Making the custom ploppables meant I've learned some more about Plug-In Manager, LE and LEProp, so I plan to write a tutorial on how to make such custom ploppables.  Clearly, I'll be relying on my team mates to make sure I'm not talking rubbish!

-We also had a team discussion about Prop Families and their use in LE, and it seemed we all approached them slightly differently, so I plan a small tutorial on the use of Prop Families.  Whilst this is basic stuff, it's very useful for those new to LE.

-To compliment Dave's BRILLIANT cricket lot, I plan to make some custom sports LOTs.  They'll be small community sports grounds, not big professional stadia.

-And as a team we have an idea up our sleeves that could be of interest and involve anybody in the community who wants to jump on board!  Still in pipeline, so more on this later once it's a bit more developed.

Paul

Great to see this team - age wise I fit in very well - but unfortunately no batting, lotting and modding skills here...

The creators are
Paul, Joan and Dave in that order.

Congratulations, Pat. Your NUTty prize is in the mail.

Your questions will require a team answer, and everyone must understand there is a huge time gap between our members. Right now, it's about 8 p.m. Wednesday here (central U.S.A.), 1 a.m. Thursday in the UK and 2 p.m. Thursday in Sydney. Dave suggested we reserve a table in central Siberia for our meetings, but the travel time is a killer!

Once again, congratulations and thanks for playing the game!

Soon...

Lol, well done Pat, but don't get too excited, you haven't seen your prize yet  ;D

Well my storage yard hasn't made an appearance for awhile. It is now ploppable with jobs, which required a bit of a rework, but that's one more hurdle overcome.

Here's a couple of pic's.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg444.imageshack.us%2Fimg444%2F2614%2Fnewcityfeb1531120665923tt1.jpg&hash=c46433215da8cda0bfd845c1a27f2176e713a7b9)

Have to get rid of some of the red barrels, and I've rotated the office.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg444.imageshack.us%2Fimg444%2F9568%2Fnewcityapr2311206659482gl9.jpg&hash=dd156993f8d6058cfd440f0965ca852657c3be94)

The bottom lot is the original (on a park base) and the top is the latest version. Still not quite sure about the new office placement near the gate.
Let me know what you think.

As for dependancies:-

BSC Mega Props - JES Vol01.dat
BSC Mega Props - JES Vol03.dat
BSC Mega Props - JES Vol04.dat
BSC Mega Props - JES Vol06.dat
BSC Mega Props - JES Vol07.dat
BSC Mega Props jestarr Vol02.dat
BSCBATProps jestarr Vol01.dat
MAPP_SecurityKioskProps.dat
PEG_ChainLinkFence_RESOURCE.dat
jes_SugarWarehouseProps.dat
jes_family_industrials.dat

A rather large list unfortunately, but if you like jestarr's stuff it shouldn't be too painful as you will probably have most of his packs already. Anyway, I'll see if I can cut that back a little.

Look forward to your feedback.

Dave

I like the revised lot, Dave. Trucks entering should have to stop for an inspection before they proceed, and making the lot plopable with jobs is a real coup! How is the cricket pitch coming along - looks like you have two sure-fire winners for LEX candidacy.

And I've just updated the Mouse House thread, so take a look (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4020.msg134455#msg134455). There's plenty of cheese to go around and not a trap in sight!

Until next time...

Hi Dave,

Yeah, I like it alot.  Only subtle differences but they work well.  Agree withyou that some red barrels need to go, or maybe just moved out of the main driving/manouvering area.  And I like the office where it is now.

The dependancy list, is as you say a bit long, but the vast majority of it is by one person.  Isn't the JES 01 and Jestarr 01 the same pack with a different name?

And I'd be interested to hear what stats you've given it jobs-wise and pollution-wise.  Also, how did you do the jobs?  SG's tuto?  Hopefully my hints helped and didn't send you in the wrong direction ;)

Great stuff, as Joan says, must be one for the LEX Candidacy.

Hi all,

For those of you who may be new to Lot Editor, we've put together a short tutorial on how to use Prop Families.  It's pretty basic, so those who have used Lot Editor for a while will probably know all this anyway.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, have got rid of a few of those red drums. Won't show another pic 'cause its basically identical.

One question for you though, a lot like that, zoned IM, what level of jobs would you set. Its set at about 40 at the moment, In RL it would probably be 10-20, but what do you think.

Hey tooheys, great looking lot.  As for the jobs, 40 is too high, I may even go as low as 10 only.  The list of dependencies is no problem, at least for me.  I don't think it's too many.

Well let's see.

The Maxis "yard" is usually an empty industrial lot. It can have a truck parked on it or a dumpster. According to the SC4Tool it has 21 jobs. The Maxis burner which often sits all by itself on one of those yards has 6 jobs.

The XTool will tell you how many jobs the shipping dock will have. But it will not know about the office near the entrance. Again, you can run that through the tool to find its job count and add it to the total. What about all the other space? I don't think that I'd use the Maxis 21 jobs per 'yard' as my answer. But let's assume for argument that we want  or should have 2 workers per tile that is used for pipe, block, and bag storage.

Hypothetically speaking.
The shipping dock has 10 jobs
The office has 3 jobs
And each tile used as storage has 2 jobs per tile. I guess the lot is a 4X4 which is 32 jobs.

So the total would be 32+3+10 = 45 jobs for the lot.

Pat, ssshhhh, thats a secret. No, only kidding. Go ahead my friend, hey we won't knock back any free advertising  :D
For those wondering, as a prize for the little contest above, Pat got sent the beta (very) versions of the chi mansions.

You will notice that Paul will be missing for a week or two because he's on a well deserved holiday. Upon his return, we intend to have a look at making these into residential growables.

Thanks to everyone for their comments re the job No's for the storage lots, I was settling on around 20 then read jmyers comments which also made sense although two per storage tile might be a bit too much. Maybe I'll split the difference  %confuso. Anyway, the feedback has been great and has given me plenty of things to think about

Cheers

Dave

The 2 per tile probably isn't that high if you consider that the company probably hires a dozen truckies, plus a few receptionists, store managers, forklift drivers, plus the boss, his wife (who is always doing the books) and his old man who built the company up and can't quite retire so everyone humors him.  $%Grinno$%

Ok. So now you've decided that (example only) 45 jobs is the right number for this 4X4 industrial lot. But holy cow, the loading dock (which I assume is your building) only had 10.  Now it's time to increase the fill factor of the XTool. I think that 4.25 should be about right. Bingo! The building and consequently the lot will offer 45 jobs to the Sims. Plus! consumption (water, electric) and pollution numbers will be in line as well.

Next you should select 'make a growable lot' option. Use the menus to designate lot size and – presto – the Tool will tell you what the appropriate stage growth is. You can generate a new properly named lot or simply click the back button and use that information  to mod the correct stage growth to your existing lot. Very important step as you want the lot to grow at the right time and also upgrade to something else if not made historical.

Pretty snazzy if you ask me. In the past we used to make educated guesses. Some better than others.   ;)

Almost bingo, Jim!

An industrial building always gets at least 3 workers (if the building is non-existent), in other words:
3 + occupancy based on volume

If the total occupancy is 10, then the occupancy based on volume is 7.

The filling degree only affects the volume, and thus the occupancy based on volume. It won't affect that constant 3.
Thus, you would need to increase the occupancy that's based on the volume from 7 to 42, in order to get a total of 45 workers.

In other words, the filling degree would have to be 6-fold (6×7=42).
Since the default is 0.5, a filling degree of 3.0 would in this case give 45 workers. ::)

I'm certainly learning something here. Thanks Tage and Jim, you know, I think I almost understand that  :o. And now I'm going to possibly throw a spanner in the works. My base lot is an invisible IM lot. Will that cause any problems (probably), so let me know if I need to relot to get things to work properly. Relotting isn't a problem, already done it a dozen times so once more won't hurt.

Why is it an invisible IM building? You can now make a proper IM building in the X_Tool  If you need help post in the thread for the beta testers at BSC.

Well it was invisible before the X-tool came along (for me anyway)  ;). Have been working thru your guide Barby and it has helped me a lot , I think I've improved from a clutz to a bumbler, things are looking up   :D

I will rework it using the x-tool, and aim for both a growable and ploppable lot.

In the meantime I'll get the cricket lot finalised for my initial candidacy lot. I have the readme's Barby linked in the TG thread. One question I guess, given that the initial lot needs no unique dependancies (it's all available on the LEX etc) is an .exe file required?

Diggis, if the missus is away, I'm sure you'll have better things to do  ::)

Not a worry. I have a couple of lots planned. As I'm sure you have over there, not all council cricket grounds here have boundary fencing, so I will stick with the initial lot because that's mostly what I see locally, but will also do a fenced version as well. Most council areas have at least one fenced A'Grade ground.

So no hurry, I appreciate the work your doing with the fences and once available I'll be looking for your feedback re the new lot.

Cheers

Dave

I noticed that you didn't have a custom Icon for this.  You may have added one already, but if not I've done one up for you...

I can add your logos to it when you get some.  It's really easy to add.  Get the LEprop from ST modds and downloads and open your lot.  You can import a PNG through there for your icon.

If you want more done for other lots they don't take very long.  Take a screenie of the lot and flick it to me and I'll see what I can do.

here's a question for you,
would a pitch that size have a "Crease Cover"? I'm sure you know what I mean, something that may be rolled on in time
of very inclement weather? or just a roll of tarpaulin at the edge of the pitch that could be dragged on?

As you know proper sports fanatics will play through all types of weather except for cricket  ::)

And golf, where they have cancelled for it being too dry.

I don't think covers are necessary for a pitch this size.  It looks to me more like a local kids club ground.

TTC, thats "Textured Artificial Turf"  :D

Actually, Diggis you know how the game is played down here. I'm no bat'er but do you think it would be possible to create an artificial pitch, either concrete or concrete with mats?? Just an idea and probably not necessary, but nothing like a bit of variety.

By the way, have been looking at that tute re the custom queries. No problems with the early part, attaching a query to a lot, but after that, well, straight over my head. Still trying, but expect a question or two shortly.

Thanks for your help to date and the cricket lot is now officially the "Collins Commemorative Cricket Ground". Just one last issue to sort out and then off for LEX candidacy.

Though could have sworn he said he was only helping during the time he would normally sleep, eat or s... hmmm  ;D

Actualy while try to sort out the finer details, like style (soft and fluffy, like walking on air) and colour (fuschia), Jason foolishly used the expression 'damn Skippy' and our devout Aussie took offense at the damning of his kangaroo headed God and is sending the SAS to free me. $%#Ninj2

Now that Jason has some new slippers and something to nibble on - no no, don't eat the slippers! - maybe some of you would mosey over to the Mouse House for a quick look at the latest update. (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4020.msg142703#msg142703)

I posted a test render at the end and, much to my surprise, it actually looks like a little house! Then Paul ran it through the LE and inspired me to finish it up and see it in game. Of course, Dave had to rag on me about the color, but Paul came up with the perfect excuse explanation!

So, see ya' there!

To update you all on what is happening NUTwise at the moment.......

The Mouse House....is building up a following and many are describing it as the best tut for those new to the BAT, and our dear friend Derry The Tea Cat was even inpired enough to produce his first house!

The Sports Academy......is generating ideas and we will slowly be adding lots to go along with Dave's great Cricket ground.  Shaun (Diggis) is being an enormous help by producing some custom props for us and we are all very happy with what he's doing.

Dave's Storage Lots.....are in final testing and scrutineering, so we hope they'll appear on the LEX real soon.

My Market Place Lots.....are also in final testing and scrutineering, maybe on the LEX soon.

Dave's Truck/Service Stops.......are looking good and will progress toward LEX over the coming days.

Hope this update helps and feel free to letus know what you like and what else you think we should think about working on.

Paul
