Title: Cockatoo's HK Development Thread
Post by: Cockatoo-210893 on August 22, 2008, 06:03:09 PM
Well, I guess... if I'm going to try my luck at uploading to the LEX, then I'm going to have to set up shop here as well.
So, welcome to mah BAT development thread for the LEX.
Here I'll be attempting to improve my modding skills, testing out the CAM and maybe creating CAMlots- I'll need some help with that area and of course and continuing to model the beautiful architecture of Hong Kong with Gmax and the BAT.

Current project: The Majestic Hotel.
Originally intended for release with the Hong Kong Streets Pack on the STEX, It'll also (hopefully) be released as a standalone on the LEX with a CAM version included.
Here it is:

This stuff posted here will tie in with my LEX candidacy thread, Cocka-too-LEX (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=5256.0).
More soon as I complete the night-lighting...

This is pretty impressive work. The street level is really well done. That said, the biggest weakness to this bat is the glass windows. They don't like very real. I can sympathize as windows were the bane of my existence for quite a while. If you're inclined, I think they could use some work so that the top bit of this building is comparable to the ground floor.

Yea, you're right about the glass Spa. I'm trying to fix it... but without having max... I mean... well glass in Gmax has always been a bit of a pain in the ass. I'm working on a new texture now - less colourful and more reflective, that might do the trick eh?  ::)

As for the second I have to agree with Tage, great reflections.

Try a rectangular target spot aimed at the sign, with the falloff not going beyond the sign   oh, and make the background red and the text white
Title: Re: Cockatoo's HK Development Thread
Post by: Cockatoo-210893 on September 27, 2008, 06:31:51 PM
Thanks callagrafx! That worked, but because the sign is actually red text with a white background (see RL photo) it had to stay that way for the night-lighting.

Anyway it's all been rendered, but because of 3 separate issues it had to be done in 3 parts (Base, Tower 1, Tower2) just like the Admiralty Centre. I know this sometimes causes problems but...
1. The Maxis lighting rig wouldn't reach as high as the top of the towers if they were perched on top of the base, leaving the roofs with no shadowing.
2. My method of lighting would cause the lights of one tower to show up on the other if they're side by side, mucking up the whole night-lighting scheme.
3. My computer is too crappy to render the complex as a whole anyway.

I'll modd it during the week and hopefully have it read for my LEX thread soon.
Here's how it turned out...

Looking much better

I suggested the reversal as this is the night shot you posted:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi90.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk248%2Fcockatoo-210893%2FHCGECNight.jpg&hash=d95e6b67d45ee0731378a43cef95e6a64545e413)

But I see they must reverse the lighting at night.  That would be simple to do in MAX but GMAX has so many limitations I'm amazed you've got such a good result, excellent BAT.

Love them both! :)

However, those tennis courts seem rather tight,
considering you're standing behind the baseline when you're serving... ::)

Also, if the opponent is serving the ball across the side line,
I wouldn't want to be the guy trying to catch it without running into the fence... $%Grinno$%

Compare the space around your courts to the space around a RL one...

Along with what Ripplejet says, I'd also say the grass texture is too severe and the courts themselves look way too big...You may consider changing this to a swimming pool and making the building a hotel...it indeed resembles one built in the 60's.

Thanks guys, although you may not know this is actually a re-creation of a real world building which means I have to try and stay as true to the original as possible.
For jmyers, it's a military office building - explains all the radars and stuff on the roof.
Callagrafx, you're totally right about that texture though, I was just being lazy - I'll try and find a good one.
Here is a Google Earth shot for those who don't like the positioning of the tennis courts:
(I could make them a little smaller, but only by a bit.)

Excellent work. My only thought on the tennis court thing is not so much the positioning as it is the dimensions. The service boxes are a bit long. Aside from that, it looks like a great building. The Fairmont House looks pretty good too.

(I could make them a little smaller, but only by a bit.)

At least, try not to make it larger than Maxis' in-game tennis court. ;)
That one is 1×2 tiles (16×32 m), including the space around the court.
The court itself is roughly 11×24 m.

In real life (http://www.xsports.com/dimensns.html), a tennis court (for doubles) should be 10.973 m × 23.774 m (36' × 78').
A RL tournament court would require a total space of 18.288 m × 36.576 m (60' × 120').

Hey, just asking around... Dose anybody know where to find some decent floor plans / side elevations for the Standard Charted Bank Building in Hong Kong (directly adjacent to the HSBC tower). I want to start modeling it, but I need a good idea of the size / shape of it before I can get started.

Incase you don't follow my thread at ST, I'm learning to BAT in Max.
Here's some of the stuff I've been up to in the past few months - Yongfu House (not a re-creation of any particular RL tower, however based on one in Wan Chai) will be released to the LEX soon. Other projects include the AIG Tower Revisited and the above Standard Charted Bank Building.

If you are just learning to bat in 3dmax...might I ask what program you were using before? I always thought you were using 3dmax. BTW the AIG building looks good, that other building looks great and the trees look fantastic, you should make a tree pack if your work with tree's is that life like.

SimNation, I was using Gmax up until a few months ago (it's a really old striped down free version of 3ds Max with few capabilities – and it's also the default program for the BAT). Those trees on the lot are just props (made by simfox) but the ones on the model are mine. I'm not nearly that good yet!

Holy crap.  For a beginner, you sure are great at it.  Those buildings are simply awesome.

I come here after seeing your last tower on the STEX.

This tower must be one the 3/4 bests towers I've seen for SC4 in terms of attractivity : the golden cladding, the way you build the reflects on it and (of course) the night lights are very very good :o.

So I may be a bit dumb here, but I have a problem seeing the nightlighting on the tower; but I do for pretty much everything else, and I'm pretty sure I have that ancient patch. What else might I need to do to get it working? (Also, it's not just the screen, but any lighting at all. Even on the landmark version)

Doublecheck that you have the Update for BAT, which allows nightlighting. This is available from the EA Support button at the top of each screen here.

Yep, doublechecked... It seems to be hit and miss, as about 1/4th the time the bat'd ones will light up, albeit delayedly... I just wasn't patient enough, it took about 3 minutes of F6 night before it lit. I'll just have to go dig up the discs and do a reinstall, I think...
