Title: Desert Springs: update 20 - More from Nottingham and changes at the airport...
Post by: amapper on November 05, 2009, 06:36:49 PM
Desert Springs is a gateway to the mountains and beyond.
What will it's future be as highways link it to the rest of the nation?

Thats a great looking quad, and it will be interesting to see how you develop it. The town looks good and I agree with Nardo that the railyard is nicely done.  Good to see a story as well.

One to watch I'm sure.

Title: Update 3: Desert Springs is expanding...
Post by: amapper on November 08, 2009, 07:33:47 AM
We are now going to jump ahead 10 years and see how the city is doing:
There has been a lot of growth, starting with distribution companies, then as people moved in to fill jobs
services and retail followed. Thanks to the vision of the city's mayor (Pete Wright, great-great grandson
of old BJ Wright), Desert Springs is transitioning into a dynamic green oasis. Broad avenues have been laid
out connecting subdivisions with shopping and industrial areas. Landscaping is being added to the main
thoroughfares and parks in the subdivisions.

Nice work here. The desert terrain is something you don't see too often, and seems like, with the green-ness of some of the lots out there, seems like it could be hard to work with. But you are doing a good job with it. You seem to be taking full advantage of the space available and it really adds to the realism. Large parking lots, open areas. No reason to build too dense (yet). The fact that a railyard helped play a part in the town's development is just icing on the cake. Where did you get your apartment buildings? I don't recall having seen them before, but they look nice on the lots. The school is laid out very well too. Simple, yet effective. Where'd you draw your inspiration for this? Looking forward to what's next.

Title: Update 4: Expansion in the SE quadrant continues...
Post by: amapper on November 10, 2009, 07:37:33 AM
The city's master plan calls for a network of avenues that tie into the freeways, giving access to all areas of
the city. From these, primary streets go into the neighborhoods which are serves by secondary streets. This
has been found to provide smooth traffic flow and be less of an obstruction than freeways.

Good point about the road colors.  I guess the graying would be particularly common in dryer climates.  Personally, I'd actually prefer a mod that darkens the standard streets and highways a bit.  I guess it's all matter a preference.

I like the large layout you're using, the big grid of roundabouts works very well!

Title: Question: River or no river?
Post by: amapper on November 13, 2009, 08:27:11 AM
As I've been working on this region the thought has come to me that a river would make the areas development a more likely scenario: the Rio Grande and Colorado rivers in the SW US and the Nile come to mind. What do you think?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg510.imageshack.us%2Fimg510%2F6228%2Fscreenhunter02nov131119.jpg&hash=7e15c93b107dbf111888055d0261b7be74f0b0aa)
Title: Re: Desert Springs
Post by: Battlecat on November 13, 2009, 08:33:47 AM
I'll admit, personally I have a weakness for rivers, and in particular the deep canyons necessary to get game water in elevated cities!  It looks like a nice addition to me, something that will add a bit more texture to your city as it develops.  My only suggestion would be to add a few steep gullies leading town to the river if you feel inclined to do a touch more terraforming!  They could represent the preferred path of water during the rare but intense rainstorms deserts get.  Regardless, looks nice though.

It's he first time I really watched your pictures.
I must say: I really like them &apls We don't have a lot MDs which play in that area of the world, so I'm looking forward to where you are going

To your question:
I think you should lower the terrain a little bit, because the river beds are too steep in my opinion - but that is of course your decision ;) ;)

Keep it up,
Fabian

as for realism, I'd say "no river", but it really looks good.
the problem with realism is:
how do the springs and the river connect?
and why didn't they settle at the river instead, then?

just my 2 cents....

great MD, though ;)

Nice developement I must say (and no unnecessary level railway crossings to nag on  $%Grinno$% ). The river canyons surely are a nice detail on the map! I like the spatious growth of your city but I guess land isn't very expensive or rare in the desert. However I do not want ott pay the cities' water bill for watering all these green areas ...

Just one thing: I've seen several times that you let a highway go up for an exit and then down until the next highway. Why don't you leave the highway on the higher level? You don't have to necessarily use the elevated highway; an embankment together with the NAM onslope pieces would make it look even better ... ;)

Another item for my friends to consider. The two pictures below show a less "green" layout. Do you think this
method looks more appropriate?

Nice couple of updates!  Have to say, both the green and not so green styles work quite nicely.  It depends entirely on how this city wants to be viewed by others.  After all, Las Vegas is a disturbingly green city in the middle of a desert.  Either way, looking forward to seeing what's next.

The green texture that is part of the runways/taxiways don't match, though (unless you know how to mod it), there's not much you could do.  Though, that problem is a minor distraction from the work you put in to put the airport together.  It's a nice small airport, and does fit nicely in with the other development in the region.

The valley continues to grow and expand with new workers and retirees moving in. The area maintains a pro business environment and tax structure, and businesses are continually looking the valley over. It is among the top of the list in Sight Selection magazine. Plenty of power, water and land provide local development leaders with powerful recruitment tools.

Can we maybe see a region view soon to locate all of these new cities in relation to Desert Springs?

Nice batch of updates over the last few days!  That golf course looks exactly like a lot of developments going in here in the Okanagan Valley of BC as well!  The airport is coming along very nicely as well!

That region view is very impressive as well, still lots of room to sprawl!

You need to use the ramp pieces instead of the dull apron ones. Ramps look better and have markings on them.

Good thought about the suburbs.  Some cities prefer to take that approach while others design their subdivisions as the opportunity arises.  Certainly looks good the way you're putting it together.

That beltway is a pretty huge project!  Looks like the regional planner is thinking a long ways ahead for future growth!

I'll be waiting to see how those lots fill up.   ;)

Hmm, I do find it weird that there's so much evergreens in the suburbs in a desert region.  ::)
