Title: Mallorca
Post by: jeronij on January 20, 2008, 03:22:57 AM
After a long time thinking about it, I have decided to join all my SC4D efforts and knowledge into a new, and probably definitive, project. I say definitive, becuase it is so huge that I dont think I will start another region (seriously) again, and not because I dont plan to continue playing  $%Grinno$% .

I have decided to recreate the island of Mallorca (Majorca) as detailed as possible. This is the island where I live, and it has an amazing geography which includes mountains, plains, lots of shoreline, not many rivers, but plenty of streams and creeks. I have decided to not put a time limit on making this region, so it will take a while to complete, if completed ever  ::) .  Now, after almost two weeks of playing/creating, I start to have some pictures which are worth to show. As you will see, this will be an step by step project, and I hope to be able to accomplish the 45 days/update rule without problems  ;D

Anyway, I will leave this first post for the introduction and the Table Of Contents, and I will post the first update in the next post.

Mallorca region was gently created by MallowTheCloud (NHP) some time ago after a personal request. The island is recreated to 1:1 scale, so it is really huge  ::) . In fact it comes in three regions, which can be downloaded here:

West Mallorca (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12328) by MallowTheCloud (The region I am actually playing)
NorthEast Mallorca (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12333)  by MallowTheCloud
SouthEast Mallorca (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12334)  by MallowTheCloud

A big thanks go from here to MTC for this fantastic maps

I will start with a Terraformer (Thanks Wou  ) Region View .... perhaps you can see the city of Port de Soller, where I started to build...

Port the Soller is located to the North of this image, and it is the only natural port in the whole north coast of Mallorca. This strategical situation made it an important naval crossroads along the history. The most remarcable notice of these old times are the lighthouses and military instalations in the Port de Soller harbour:

1  Cap Gros lighthouse
2  Current military lighthouse
3  Old military lighthouse (on stormy days, the wawes were crossing over it ¡¡¡ )
4  Current military lighthouse house

In this old picture you can see both old lighthouses ( old Cap Gros to the left, which does not exist anymore  &mmm , and the old (working) military lighthouse to the right). I think this picture is really nice, and shows the spectacular position of the Cap gros lighthouse  ()stsfd()

This is an actual picture of the Cap Gros lighthouse....

... and the way I recreated it in MAX  ;D

These are some views on the military lighthouses:

3 Old (ruins) military lighthouse
4 Lighthouse mitary personnel house

... and again the way I recreated those in MAX

Lighouse Military house

And finally some in game pictures.... you will have to excuse the poor quality of the details.... I am in the process of creating some additional customized lots for this region, which should help to improve the mediterranean look  ::)  . I do also need to warm up my city building skills, because it's been a long time since I seriously played this great game  $%Grinno$%

Anyway, here they come

In this picture you can see the first steps in creating the place for the Cap Gros lighthouse.... I will change the road to street soon  ::)

A front perspective from the area...

In this one you can also see the placement are for the military lighthouses

And one of my favourites perspectives...

Finally some details on the first lighthouse model...

I really like the way it looks like, however, some changes are going to be done in that area, to make it better fit reallity...  $%#Ninj2

And that is all for this first update.... I hope you keep liking this "style" of MD'ing  ;)  :D  :D

And thaks to all those of you who posted while I was editing this post  --- Now is when it really starts  ;D

Great news! Jeronij starts a new MD!  &dance

I am very curious of your new ideas and - I think - new look at the game  :)
I love Baleares, never have I been on Mallorca, but spent some time on Ibiza - I have much photos from this beautiful place, I hope I will visit these islands again  ;)

Good luck Jeronij and don't hurry, all of us know you are very busy  :)
Let it be at first a pleasure for you , then for us

Hi jeronij!

This sounds quite promising and I'm wishing you best of luck with this huge project. And of course I'm looking very much forward to seeing the first pics - hoping that you won't forget about all the german tourists (you know, Mallorca is inofficially the 17th federal state of Germany  $%Grinno$% )  :D

Jeronij, glad to see you start a MD that will but your base-island in the picture! Never been there, but it must be beautifull - I once saw a TV programme on a train voyage accross the island - spectacular!
Anyhow, I am sure it will be a joy to see you sculpting the island, looking foward to your updates here. For one, I do love the colors used in the picture: that is my favorite blue

Okay, now that the update is up:

I quite like the modelling of the lighthouses, but I have one question: why is the military lighthouse textured so differently to that of the RL version? Is there any particular reason for that particular texture being used? I would've thought you would've just used a more plain brick texture? Is it just to accentuate the details?

Also, just out of curiosity, do those lighthouses have the same effect as used on the default Maxis one? It'd be so cool seeing them shine the beam across the water...

I er, don't know where Port de Soller is, though... that map is huge.

Jeroni... one of my main inspirations in the SC4 community creates a MD.  :shocked2::shocked2::shocked2:

Back to school I go... time to learn some new tricks!

Love how you manage the terrain so well with roadways, lighthouses, etc. That looks incredible. My expectations have already been exceeded.... &apls

This is going to be a wonderful MD, no doubt  :)

I'm eagerly waiting to see how you'll integrate your custom content into recreating accurately your region. So far it looks great with those light houses. I know it is very hard, as problems arrive when less expected because of the many differences between the real world and SC4 (I've tried and failed &mmm ) but I'm sure that with your great skills you'll come up with some very clever solutions for those sorts of problems.

Buena suerte!   ;D

I am, like everyone else, looking forward to following this one. ;)

Hi Jeronij,

I think you're going to hit the record for number of comments after the first post.  And I think this is for two reasons:

1- To many of us here on SC4D you are "the master".  You do so much for this site and for the game itself with your Mods, Bats and Lots.  That alone almost guarantees you a strong following.

2- What you've done so far with Mallorca looks stunning.  From the choice of terrain mod, the cliffs, the lighthouses, the RL pics plus showing us your own custom built Bats - they're all magnificent.  I feel that this is going to be more than an MD.

There's going to be a lot of people watching this for updates......no pressure then ;)

I've been to your lovely island twice, in 1988 to Callas de Mallorca and in 2002 to the glorious ;) Magaluf.  So I am looking forward to seeing the marvelous countryside, the beautiful beaches and I can't wait to see how you reproduce the night life of Magaluf and Palma Nova.

All the best with your amazing project,

Paul

Jeroni,

Excellent start to your MD! I missed Sculpting Columbia Valley somehow and feel as though I missed out. It seems that recreating your home will become a legendary MD in no time at all.

I am duly impressed that you are creating your own BATs for those "must have" buildings to get the feeling right.

I must ask, is there any chance of a Mallorca pack in the future?

Cheers,
Kevin

Stunning, a real nice mix of bats and pictures to show what your recreating, it really helps to get your mind in the right zone for looking at the screenshots. Never been to Mallorca, but I've spent most of my holidays on the shores of the medeteranian sea, and the landscape mod really suits the enviroment.

Hello to all ;D

Wow  ??? ¡¡¡, so many gentle comments  ¡¡¡ You are all very kind. I want to thank you for your feedback and comments.

Before the development pictures, for those of you who are wondering if the lighthouses do work...

I plan to work more  in the Cap Gros lighthouse area, there are some buildings missing, and I will  change the lighthouse placement... but before I proceed there, I have started to define the first residential zone in this city tile....

In RL, this is residential resort on the side of a hill, right facing the sea... We'll see  how this grows  ::)

Again a BIG thanks to all for the compliments  . It is a pleasure to post a picture in this MD so far  ;D

I hope you get what you want to grow there.  I think it is very difficult building a city on such a hilly terrain.  So I will have to watch closely how you accomplish this.  As I have no luck at all.  I have seen alot of your work before, but I wasn't actually foloowing it as you were building so this will be a learning experience for me.
The light house looks great.  Does the actually move around the light house?  They look fantastic as well, you did a very good job on them.

I am enjoying your efforts so far and have my pencil and pad ready for taking notes. When viewing your regions I feel as though I were in school.

The terrain mod looks interesting. Almost other-worldly with it's various hues. Is that Dogfight's: DarkIgneous rock mod?

Looking forward to the regions development.

I knew it was a good idea to visit this MD again tonight - the lighthouse is wonderful. Does it actually turn arround (the light I mean  ::) )

I am looking forward to find out what kind of houses you will let grow in those spots....

The lighthouses are gorgeous just as expected.
It will be interesting to see how the residential area develops with low-density zoning and several single tiles. Just hope nobody falls out of their backyard! :)

Until next time...

You will say I am a bad educated guy.... and you'll almost be right  $%Grinno$% ...

Now some time for some replies....

It is great to see some "old" faces again, and some new ones as well  . This speaks volumes about our community health  :D

All and every one of your comments is really welcome, but I wont have the time to reply one by one...  ::) ... so , sebes, warconstruct, Derry, szarkoz, kimcar, iamgoingtoeatyou, dsrwhat316, vester, TopCliff, bobinator, Yoman, jayo, Fukuda , Dustin, Heblem, Jmouse, GrizzlyBuilder, kwakelaar, Xiziz, getdown11, tooheys,    receive my warmest wishes and thanks

Ennedi, the water mod I decided to use (because it really looks like the real water in the area) ,is : dogfight_Marshy_WaterMod.dat recently released. And the rock mod  by the same author: dogfight_DarkIgneous_Rock_Mod.dat  ( Sorry I dont have the links at hand atm  :-[ )

Praidoan, we'll probably see many German people in Mallorca, but at other places... in Port de Soller you we'll mainly see French and Belgium people  ;) ( and perhaps some "lost" english  ::) ) , and thanks for replying mightygoose's question

Shadow Assassin, I used these textures for the old military lighthouse for no particular reason...  ;D ... simply because it looks nicer than the real one  :D . And I hope the last pictures do answer your question about the light - houses. Port de Soller is located right at the north of that picture.

beskhu3epnm, thanks for your compliments  ... yes, this is going to be a challenging terrain, but Slope City was also an interesting (ly failed) experience  ;)

DebussyMan, I found those difficulties right from the beggining... it is difficutl to adapt reality to SC4, and I am fearing that some (or many) custom lots and BATs will be needed to get a semi-decent recreation of what I am pursuing  ;D

Thanks Alex  ¡¡¡, I plan to intensively use the NAM in this region  ::) , so I am glad you are around here to give me a hand from time to time  :D

paroch, thanks for your feedback  , and talking about the crazy night light in Magalluf...  $%Grinno$% .... we'll see .... I`ll need SimGoobers adult props for sure  :D :D

BigSlark , you are right  ;), those buildings are 100% required to give the right "feeling". About this:
QuoteI must ask, is there any chance of a Mallorca pack in the future?
, well, I will release most of my custom content, of course, but I like to include as much stuff as I can in my packs, so it may take a while  ;D

David, thanks for the compliment  , I am glad to know I made your day a bit better  ;)

Wou, amigo,
QuoteAmazing start, as I've been to Puerto de Soler almost 10 years ago, and I remember I've seen that lighthouse !
, ha ha ha, it seems that sometime in the future the lighthouses will be demolished, as the military base which has also been demolished some time ago...so I am somehow recreating an illusion  :D
Btw, I am using CPT_No7_TreeController_ShorePine_RequiresNo8andNo9.dat as the main tree controller, but I placed most of the trees using the Mayor Mode  Mods  ;D

ejc, hello there ¡¡¡, yes, I recall Menallorca  ;) , and the goals for both projects are different  ;) ¡¡¡, you finished it... I dont know if I ever will  :D :D

figui, gracias por el comentario  ¡¡¡

Masochist, I do also hope to see everything starting to take shape soon  ::)

Alfred.Jones, nice to see you around here my friend  . And wow  ??? ¡¡¡, what it that banner in your signature  ::)  $%Grinno$%  :D :D :D

Robin, also great to see you my friend, of course the lights "work" the same way Maxis ones  ;)

And I stop here .... It been a long time since a so looooong post from me  ::)  :D :D :D

Again thanks to all for your support

Looking forward to see how this turns out ;)

I am interested to see how the residential area on the slope will work out. From my experience, most residential lots don't seem to be very slope tolerant. The building either ends up in a hole in the ground, or its a 20ft drop from the front gate to the street. Either way, it's difficult to leave home  :D

Cheers

This is amazing news. One of the major reasons for me to start a journal at this site was your presence here - anything you do seems to raise the bar for the rest of us. Thank you for starting this new journal.

About the latest update: it will most certainly be interesting to see how that area grows - those are some mighty steep slopes you are working with. ;D

As for the Light house, I haven't really used one where I noticed the light working, or maybe it did and I just forget....that's why I asked.  ::)

Hello dear Mallorca visitors  ;D

First I must thank you all for your kind support and comments  . You make MDing quite easy ;) ¡¡¡

You may know (or not) that I dont have much free time, but I found some time today to play a bit more with Port de Soller. I am still in the earlier stages of developemt, but those are crucial, and all the city depends on this preliminary planning... so you may expect some worrying planning pictures in the next updates... but dont worry much about it... it wont take a long time until something grows here  :D :D

To all the interested in the lighthouses, and other custom buildings which may show up from time to time in this MD, they will be released. Dont worry about it... but as always, I prefere to wait a little bit and have a complete and variated package (worth downloading) to be released....  ;D

And to all the interested in the residential development in the hills behind Cap Gros lighthouse, well, you will have to wait a little bit yet.... some jobs are needed for the sims to come, and I have to plane the area for those first jobs  ;)

Ok, enough worrying you with my words, and lets go for some picutures ...  ::) ¡¡¡

I wanted to try to improve the use of the terrain, flora and plopable items to give the city a more mediterranean look.... more mediterranean than ever.... without a single building... well, I think for a first try is not very bad, but I will have to play much more with this idea.... I did not make a single wall, and the mountains here a full of them ¡¡¡¡

You can see HERE (http://www.senderisme.com/revimg.aspx?idioma=es-ES&idimg=000000500F0006&idrev=500) what I mean  ::)

When I was tired of placing ploplable items, I started to move to the other side of the bay....

Time to place the other lighthouses....

This is where the military base will be placed... I have to say that I had the opportunity to visit that base some years ago, and it was a really interesting experience.... I was inside subamarine silos... really impressive for a civilian like me  ::)

The first serious thing to deal was the placement of the military lighthouses and complements...

The modern one should be placed higher than the older one, which was covered by the wawes in the stormy days...

This picture shows the result of several (funny) BATting days  ()stsfd() ... and I like the way they fit togheter....  :P

Talking about planning, I placed some marks to not get too enthusiastic with some idea, and forget the main goals for this city  ::)  $%Grinno$%

Note: For those of you who took the time to real the labels, and are wondering what torrent means (in that context  ::) ), it means stream, and there are three joining the sea in Port de Soller, so it is going to be a really challenging city tile  :D :D ¡¡¡

And the last picture shows some of my old terraforming techinques being used here and there.... more work to come on that corner in the next update  ;)

Well, I hope you find the development a bit interesting.... it starts to take shape slowly but firmly ...

Again thanks to all for the support  ;D ¡¡¡

It's interesting to see your method of planning.  Three stream meeting in the bay will be an interesting challenge.  I am guessing you'll be using your own TPW which I love using.  I look forward to see how you do it.

And the colour of the terrain certainly gives it the meditteranean feel you are looking for.

And yes, the walls in the mountains and hills of Mallorca, I remember those.

jeronij, love the landscape and can't wait to see what you do with the military port area.

Your road layouts on the slopes are are nicely done throughout, although in the last pic, the road coming down the slope seems a
little "hmmm" square  :). Perhaps thats how it is in RL, just seems to stand out a tad.

Anyway just a thought, and looking forward to seeing more.

Hello again, sooooo soon  ::) , and again thanks for the feedback and compliments

I fear that this project will be quite loooong and probably sometimes worrying.... and perhaps will have some pauses from time to time.... RL will have a great effect on it  ::) . When I created Sculpting Columbia River, Simtropia and Grand Canyon, I played with some advantage, because I always had several pictures "on-hold" and I was releasing the updates with almost two months of delay.... this does not happen with Mallorca, and I am almost showing you what I did yesterday... anyway, I'll try my best to keep it as interesting as possible ;)

Some feedback before I continue  ;)

star.torturer , Antoine, Dustin, bat,

paroch, I will use most of my existing custom content for this project, but you can also expect a remarcable amount of new and fresh content as well  ;)

Wouanagaine,your comment is very pleasant  ;D . "The Art of Plopping"  ::)  $%Grinno$%  :D :D :D

Joan, it may take a while until we see the military base, but I promise you that it will be very particular ...  $%#Ninj2  :P

Perhaps you may want to check Grand Canyon (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=78.0)  ;) ?

tooheys, Those are WiP (Work in Progress) pictures, and this is not a road, this is the pre-placement for the stream... I use the networks tools for other things that creating networks ...  ;)  ;D

Alfred.jones, thanks for your special support... and some more work to keep your sig updated  ;D  :D :D

metasmurf, indeed, I admit that I am not really used to the most new NAM stuff, but you will soon see how I start using it in Port de Soller  ()stsfd()

nova vesfalo, well, I admit that I am certainly paying much attention to the little details, as you will see in the next updates... perhaps too much  ()what()  ::) ?¿ Is it really worth it ?. I hope so  ;D

And talking about worrying updates.... and attention to the detail...

Pic1
I started to play with the first stream near the military base. It is the first time that I use my Residential canals, and I wanted to test something....

Pic2
I was specially interested in create fake bridges, but not in flat terrain, as the original lots where designed for.. but sunken, as you can inmediately see in this picture....  &mmm  ::)

Pic3
The first solution that came to my mind was to modify the lots, and make them dig the terrain... it seemed to work... partially... the retaining walls textures were ugly ....

Pic4
... and the foundation of the lot could be seen across the junctions... even being placed in totally flat terrain....

Pic5
So it was a good moment to start learnig how retaining walls and foundations work.... a darker retaining wall and an invisible foundation made the trick  ;D

Pic6
Finally the street bridge takes shape...

Pic7
And  couldnt resist to place some residents to see how the houses would grown in the slope around the canals...

Pic8
... and the test result is this. The area is consistent, and the canal remains sunken  ;D

Pic9
Another perspective and close up ...

Pic10
Now, just to relax your tired eyes, an overall look on the test area...

Pic11
... and "all" the development so far  ()stsfd()

Pic12
now a last look to the test, before I change it to the layout I was really looking for....

Pic13
This is the way it looks in real life... the canal is sunken and surrounded by two streets
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/Update4/JRJ_MCA_Update4_13.jpg)

Pic14
Not sure if the result is worth all the work...  $%Grinno$% ( I hope you can notice my residential walls as retaining walls in this picture... ;D )

Pic15
but I really enjoyed making the test  :D :D

Anyway, I will finally not use these canals here. I plan to make some more RL-accurated ones  ;D

And you will ask yourselves, what is all this about ?¿, a whole 15 pictures update for that ?¿. Well, the important thing here is that I finally dealed and learned how things like tresshold, foundation and retaining wall work, and I have plenty of ideas about how to use those parameters, as you will see in the next update ;D .

I hope you find the progress interesting  ;)

Again thanks to all for the feedback and support

Hola Jeronij,

It's a great pleasure to observe you at work  :D
As for your Urban Canals - they were something new and very good desingned when they were released. But as usual, after some practice with such stuff it is possible to see much more possibilities and also some limitations. Many improvements need only a subtle changes (but such changes can be more time-consuming than the original BAT creation  :D).

Of course it was worth to do it! Such little improvements enable using these canals in much more situations, and they decide about the difference between good/very good and the best stuff  :D &apls)

You show the creation process in "slow motion"  ;) I used to show more completed areas, but maybe I should take some inspiration from you?
It is really interesting!

Another stunning update, my friend!

Personally, I thought the canals looked great the way that you used them, but you're constant toiling and attention to detail is why you're one of the best! If you're not happy with a result, you keep working at it until it looks absolutely spectacular! And with how good the results you're unhappy with look, I can't wait to see how amazing the results you're happy with are!

I'll be looking forward to seeing what you've got next!

Totally worth it! The scale of this project is so large its almost incomprehensible, but if anyone can handle it, its you! These have been a great set of first updates. I can almost taste the island of Mallorca looking at you design it. I cant wait to see what you will do with some urban areas and farm areas!

Thanks to all for the nice compliments

I dont have much time to reply or update atm, but I am working on this project as much as I can. Actually I am in the process of making a customized (small) canal set for the first stream....

I am using new modelling techniques for this one, and I have to admit that it is being more difficult that I expected, specially when it come to texture applying  ::) ... but I'll keep working on it until I get something acceptable  ;)

Again thanks to all for the nice feedback and comments

Hello again ¡¡¡

Thanks to all for the comments  .I know there is no really much progress with the city atm, but I have been playing with the MAX, and experimenting with the materials, specially water.... I alse created some custom textures for the canals... ok, enough words... time for some WiP pictures  ;D

This is the texture that I created for the canals walls... not still exactly what I was looking for, but enough for the task  ::)

After some testing and experimenting I went into this.... but I was not satisfied yet  $%Grinno$%

So I decided to keep playing with some more parameters... I added a sky.... and the change is really noticeable...

This is how they look from a SC4 perspective.... not 100% sure about the water yet, but very close to what I want  ;D

I hope you like the WiP

Thanks for leaving your feedback in this MD ¡¡¡

Incredible work here, the textures are near perfect.

I'm not sure how clear the water is in real life but maybe if it is clear enough you might add some junk that got thrown into the canal at the bottom.

Also may I ask how you modeled the water?

Excellent seawalls here. the textures are the best part. They present a modern yet a little grimey feel. Their use is also excellent, will they be released eventually? I also have a question about this naval base, is it still in use on Mallorca? If so what kindof ships are there?

It looks great now, and from what I can see it will become an amazing harbor. Don't worry about the pic size; it was worth scrolling. There is only one thing I might suggest (and it's not even that big of a thing): in the second pic you posted last update (the one with the boat ramp) you have a visual entrance to the parking lot, but not to where the boat trailers are (there is a fence between the two). Unless they drove over the curb, I'm not sure how they would get in there. Aside from that suggestion, everything looks amazing and I hope to see more when you get the chance.

Certainly there is much custom content there...  ;D ... in this update I will present most of it   ;)

This week I have some free time  (finally ¡¡¡) so I will post a large and worrying update, where you will see how ungrateful is the life of a SC4 city builder....  :D :D

I will divide this update in some sections, for easier understanding  ;D

Section 1 - The beach walkway

This first section will show the custom beach walkway I created for Port de Soller (it is fictional, but I though it would fit nicely, and was the only way I found to make the retaining walls work the way I wanted.

First an overall view on the primitive situation... not very promising yet....

The first attempt to a canal to sea connection... not really convincing... $%Grinno$%
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_02.jpg)

And this is the walkway I created for the beach. The idea was to use the retaining walls to complete the lots...

... and it works...  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_04.jpg)

but I couldnt stop there...  ::) ... and I decided to create working lights for them...

The Maxis light globes did work fine for the final nightlighs modding  ;)

Section 2 - The station

Once the beach walkway was placed, it was time to proceed with the next section. The train station (light rail in RL) and the surrounding docks....

As usual, first thing was to terraform the terrain... a tedious and dangerous task, which is well worth it ¡¡¡
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_07.jpg)

I also placed the recetly rendered (and which will not be released due to some graphich glitches which I will not have the time to solve  ::) ) canals, and the start/end pieces...

I created the canal-sea connection again... the TPW does not really fit with the "real" water, but this is one of the game's (or the modders) limitations....  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_10.jpg)

A very dissapointing result so far.... really, there are so many hours involved in this area (specially modelling...).. and the result is very very poor.... ()sad()

Time to start improving it  ;D .... so I started modelling again... and the first results were bad again....  &mmm
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_12.jpg)

But I am a patient man.... and finally something started to fit where it should fit...  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_13.jpg)

Section 3 - The docks (thanks LE¡¡¡)

I want to specially thanks badsim for his tutorials about advanced lots making... really... it took a while in the LE, and specially to get the water and land tiles placed correctly and working, but finally thanks to three more lots, the docks "dramatically" changed....  ::)

Lets see it step by step:

The first test with the new seawalls, some testing is always necessary before you get the desired results  ;)

Now, lets start with the nude terraformed terrain....

First lot
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_16.jpg)

Second lot
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_17.jpg)

Third lot... and the area looks much better now... lets see the different points of view... left
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_18.jpg)

front
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_19.jpg)

right
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_20.jpg)

and back
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_21.jpg)

and finally some night pics... just to remember the time it takes to make the nightlights work... excellent nightlights in Mickebear's station  ¡¡¡
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update5/JRJ_MCA_Update5_22.jpg)

A nice terrace to have a drink in a summer night.... (there is one like that in RL as well  ;) )

And finally, because I want you to be able to have a look to the short future, a preview on some more work to come.... this time more rewarding, because it was mostly playing the game  :D :D

I hope you like the progress so far... I will start the military base these holidays.

Excellent work here Jeronij. You've really dedicated quite alot of time and effort into making this area look good, and I really like those seawalls (shame about the canals though). They are some of the most realistic I have ever seen, excellent for fishing harbors. I will eagerly await the military base

EDIT - I was looking at Mallorca in google earth and Palma is a very large city! The airport is also quite nice. There are also hundreds of fishing boats on piers in Puerto de Soller, will you be including this?

I have a question...Why do you use this color of the seawater? It's like Mallorca sea?

Outstanding update, very fine details you use on that sea port ;)

My only suggestion would be the inland town, well some places like commerces and homes you got by normal "maxis" growths that have an american feeling, that i would suggest you is using something more original for example a custom lot or a european w2w, not sure. But anyway I still have the feeling for a spanish city/town,  i can see this really similar to Emilin Islas Gemas  $%Grinno$%  keep on  ;)

Great work on the harbour area there Jeronij.

The custom sea walls with the tyres are very nice indeed.  The boat ramp is also a "stand-out" for me - very well done.

And I think the canal to sea transition is very good.  It's not easy to get a good transition where water is involved but this solution is fine.

And of course the terrain mod is perfect for Mallorca - certainly from what I can remember the countryside in Mallorca is just that colour.

Paul

It is always a treat to see new development in Mallorca, but it is a special treat to see the mechanics behind the finished work. The water front turned out splendidly, and I am happy to hear you found time to actually play the game for a while! :D

Now I am looking forward to seeing the military base develop.

Until next time...

Take care, my friend!

Hello again, I am glad you like the waterfront so far

usagus, the water looks like this in this part of Mallorca, or I'd better say this is the closest water mod I found  ;)

For those of you interested in the overall development, here is a panoramic view....

Well, while I don't personally like the terrain mod (it's just not my taste, still excellent work though), you've made it look great, it fits in with what you've intended... The question is, though, is the beach really that colour? I always thought it'd be something... a bit more sandy and white?

Excellent work on the harbour. Any chance of releasing those dock lots any time soon? :P

I like the huge amount of custom lots you've made, this probably is the first recreation of a country I've ever seen with entirely custom lots.

Jeroni- hey, reading Mallorca is like going on holiday.  I envy your apparent familiarity with the RL place- it really shows here.

Here's an alternative to this canal outflow.

At present
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg410.imageshack.us%2Fimg410%2F9783%2Fcanaloutflow1wg7.jpg&hash=8838a7d0c6cc572eea99eed68bbeb9ac334a1845)

Alternative
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F2113%2Fcanaldrain1ti5.jpg&hash=429eb967257dc1da1ee87867d13be7ffae016644)

As you can see, it's made up from a number of off-the-shelf parts you are certainly likely to be familiar with.  I ran your stone retaining walls through the Lot Editor and moved some things around on your culvert-water drop lot, and there you have it.

David

Hola Jeronij,

The general view of your harbour is excellent!
I'm very curious how will it look when more buildings will grow, especially on these slopes  ;D

I have something for you  ;)
Water areas in your harbour are relatively small, so I prepared for you smaller water ripples  :D. Try them, maybe they will look good?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg395.imageshack.us%2Fimg395%2F4413%2Fharbourripplesv3pg8.jpg&hash=85d6bb716131da9f61cce27166822f0d080ae370)

Hello dear Mallorca visitors

In the meantime, another long update which I hope you find at least interesting ...  ::)  ;)

It is time to start showing what some of you have been requesting right from the beginnig... lets start to build on slopes ¡¡¡¡

The Port de Soller area is rich in sloped areas, so it is not difficult to find the first serious one...

UPDATE 6 - SECTION 1   - Presentation

First let me introduce you the area where we are going to work.

It took me a while to get the desired transit network layout. Really a while  ::)

There seems to be not much room there....

But this is the basis where we will start to expand the town...

UPDATE 6 - SECTION 2   - Fixing the Parking

As we carefully start to expand the town, some terrain tiles may suffer some unwanted deformations. I would swear this is due to the lack of foundation in such lots....The fact is that as we placed houses on the bottom line, the parking had to be replaced.

Since this was an slope conforming lot (obviously), it was a matter of fixing the terrain.... a well placed road tile ...

This fixed the terrain
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update6/JRJ_MCA_Update6_07.jpg)

And it was a simple matter of placing the parking again  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update6/JRJ_MCA_Update6_08.jpg)

UPDATE 6 - SECTION 3   - Building on Slopes

As we climb the hill, we need more terrain, all the availabe terrain in fact.... so I thought, a well place strecht of road woul give me some more space here....

But unfortunately some of the lots were slope conforming, and the result was far from what we expected. The circles show the results which are ok
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update6/JRJ_MCA_Update6_10.jpg)

So after a Reader's session, where I changed all the lots placement properties in my MBEAR houses lots, I decided to try again. I forgot to mention that you should never save your cities after a failed test where the terrain has suffered changes like this case...

Again a short road.... crossing fingers here....

And this time worked as expected ¡¡¡. The lots do look properly now, thanks to the custom retaining walls, and we have a whole new set of tiles where we can zone  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update6/JRJ_MCA_Update6_13.jpg)

Some additional trees here and there, and this is the final result....

those are some really high walls, but I like them more than the cliffs, and they allow maximal use of the available terrain....

I hope you like this new phase in Port de Soller, this is just the start.... this hill will be full of life in one or two updates  ;D

And I dont forget your pleasant comments and suggestions, so a BIG THANKS to all for your kind support

Jeroni,
You must know me well by now, I hope.  ;)
I think your overall layout of the island so far looks great.  I am not one for building on such terrain as I don't usually like the out come of certain situations.  The only problem I see so far is the very high retaining wall in the last update.  I think it looks unrealistic and I'm not saying that, that is what you are going for or not.  But......I'm just saying in this case I don't like how it looks.  Maybe if it was lower and could be hidden from sight by the buildings themselves, than it might look better.  ;)  It just seems too high.
I really envy those that have the patience to build on such terrain as yourself and I know I could not do any better myself.
I do look forward to your next update.
Robin

Hello again dear Mallorca visitors

alfred, I used a modified version of my MBEAR Residential lots (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=468)  ;)

rooker1, since this was my first success with that technique, I'll leave it the way it is.... I just hope I will be able to get better as I can practice a bit more   ;D

To All:  the beach texture I am using in the pictures is not very similar to the real beach in Port de Soller, but I havent found a satisfactory solution to this yet.... give me some time   ::)

Thanks to all for the feedback so far  , today I will post some more pictures in the hilly town in Port de Soller.... more building on slopes.... ;D

No, with no further delay, lets go with the pictures  ;)

As we climb the hill, we use the recently created new terrain....

Those old houses grew quite soon and nicely here  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update7/JRJ_MCA_Update6_02.jpg)

And slowly slowly the area starts to take shape.... however still too much rock texture yet
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update7/JRJ_MCA_Update6_03.jpg)

From other points of view, the cliffs are not so evident, and the town looks more dense  ::)

It is a matter of filling all the available space.....

And as we arrive to the top of the hill, some "standard" zoning....

I was too lazy to modell the real church that is placed here in RL, but this one is also nice.... some parks for the childs are also always welcome  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update7/JRJ_MCA_Update6_07.jpg)

And finally an overall look to the actual situation....

More building on slopes in the next update  ;)

I hope you find the development interesting  ;D

Your buildings on slopes are very interesting for me. The best thing in your updates is showing your "workshop", planning and erection techniques. Sometimes the terraforming and buildings look a bit strange during the creation process, but everything is reasonable and the final effect is very original.

For now I especially like the 6th and 7th pictures because of their interesting perspective. But I'm sure other views will look at least such excellent after some work with flora. It is interesting how much can we done playing with rock and trees together, isn't it?  ;)

Hello dear Mallorca visitors

A BIG THANKS for you kind words and support  ;D

I am glad you are not still tired of slopes....  ::) ... now comes the third (and last for the moment) part of the Building on Slopes Series, which will complete this part of the city of Port de Soller  ;)

In the next pictures you can see how I followed the technique described in earlier updates to fill in all the possible gaps.... in the end, you can build so densely in slopes as anywhere else, but tow main rules to keep in mind:  Use small lots/zoning and let some cliffs free. They will add realism to the scene (imo of course  :P )

Port de Soller - Building on Slopes Part 3

Finishing the town on the hill

It was time to finish the upper side of the hill...

A better perspective...

Again the small 1x1 lots showed quite instantly.

They have proved to work really well in slopes, in both sides.

There was still an available trench of useable terrain hidden out there....  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update8/JRJ_MCA_Update8_05.jpg)

And it was inmediately put to work by mayor jeronij.

This was the last touch, the area... it is quite fullfilled now  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update8/JRJ_MCA_Update8_07.jpg)

Lets sit and relax....

First lets recall the original situation,
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update6/JRJ_MCA_Update6_01.jpg)

And the final one...

And now time for some perspective views...

Turning...

... and turning again....

And lets stop turning  ::) , and have a look to the overall situation
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update8/JRJ_MCA_Update8_12.jpg)

I hope you like the results so far. In the next updates I will start working seriously with the fishing harbour down the hill, and after this, finally I'll start the military base  ;D

Btw, I have been modelling some (hopefully) nice military buildings for that area.... very mediterranean btw  :D :D

After this, I made the docks administrative building.... the real one was demolished some years ago in Port de Soller  ::)

And I also made some custom ammo silo entrances.... for some lotting ideas that were rounding my mind  ;D

A detail on the ammo silo's door.... I enjoyed making the texture  ;D

Whew!

Another impressive update from the master! I absolutely love the "before-and-after" look you've given us at the slopes you built on, and the new military facilities look incredible! I can't wait to see them pop up in the game. Magnificent work, as always, my friend!

Stunning shots of the hillside development, jeroni. Even in my own limited experience, I have found it sometimes difficult to make things look suitable from all angles. Your work is amazing, though.

The new buildings are of great interest as I am just now learning to use the B.A.T. They are beautifully done and I look forward to seeing them in game.

Until next time...

Jeronij - I had some catching up to do in Mallorca, but thanks to that I had the priviledge to follow the transforming of the hill by you in all 3 updates right after each other. Man what patience you have - I envie you for that... and the result is showing. It's amazing how you managed that. I wish I could only get part of your patience when playing the game - but no, I am always in a rush to finish the tile.

You are the best - a true master in my view, and a very good host to all other majors for that reason. This MD shows the devotion you have for the game. Thanks for showing your great playing to all of us.

Very nice Jeroni. I wasn't quite sure how the lots would appear on some of the more drastic slopes, but I have to say, the end result is brilliant. (although there is a backdoor or two there that I wouldn't want to walk out of  :D )

Looking forward to seeing the fishing harbour

It always amazes me how you managed to conquer the most difficult terrain and
make it look so easy. But you also turn it into a mini tutorial as a bonus to help us all out.
I learn so much just following your MD - I thank you

Hi Jeronij,

The slope-work is brilliant, without doubt.  Port de Soller looks a lovely place, I can imagine strolling down the hill and having a nice cold Cruzcampo in the bar overlooking the harbour.

The final overview shot is very impressive, nice use of the terrain mod, with the cliffs.

And the military buildings are looking good too - I'm sure they'll be just as good in-game.

Hello dear Mallorca visitors

You are always very kind. Thanks for your support and encouragement  ;) . I have been a bit busy lately... and still I am, so I will directly go to show you some progress in Port de Soller (not much really, but I hope you like it).

Port de Soller - Finishing the Town in the hill

There were still some free spaces in the hill area, so Mayor jeronij built them a bit....

...and this is the (suposed) next area to be developed... there is not much room there, and there are many things which have to be added, so it is a nice puzzle...

... the more you climb the hill, the worse the situation becomes  ::) ....

... fortunaltely the traffic simulator called my attention to a very dangerous crossing in the area... those little details....  :-[
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update9/JRJ_MCA_Update9_04.jpg)

... this is the "evil" crossing.....

... so I changed it a little bit.... (there is no roundabout in real life, and it would not fit in the overall layout  ;)

After this distraction, and probably because I was tired of building on land only, I decided to start to plan the military base....

Port de Soller - Starting the military area...

I initially placed a radar station...

... and some dorms for the troops.... ( I couldnt get a better placement for that lot in that place  $%Grinno$% )

...there is also not much room left in the area....

.... but I plan to fill every single free tile (and more if I can  :P )

I hope you like the development.... many changes are to come to the area yet  ;D

WoW

you astound as ever &apls

That is some very tight building space you have to deal with and the hill will certainly be a challenge ;) :D

I like the start you have made to the base too.
this is a project to rival 3RR particularly as you are solo'ing it :D :D

Can't wait to see what you do next
ok I'll put the kettle on while I wait :)
have this one on me Jeroni

Ah yes, many buildings in a small area - a frequent topic of conversation among my teammates since we live in three essentially different worlds! Your work is, indeed, a very interesting process to watch and I am especially intrigued by the way the streets and roads are shaping up on the slopes.

And at last there will be a military base - a long-awaited development! ;)

Until next time...

Speloncato - Corsica (France)

Living myself in a mediterranean country ( How lucky we are , isn't it ?  ;) ) , I have to say that your work about this theme is the finest known ... Thanks to Mickebear , Odd from sweden & frogface too .

Building on slopes , zoning on rocks , learning to fly ... you would be good enough to build one of these small villages of Corsica - one of my dreams - . Hehe , why the greatest and most interesting challenges are always about the smallest things ?  ::)

Your mastery feeds my interest ( which really needs to be fed currently ) for this game , again & again ... Thank you Jeroni ! &apls &apls &apls

P.S. ; I went to Palma in the 80's and I remember its splendid cathedral ( for Debussyman ? ) but not to Port de Soller (the name sounds french  ()what() ) . That's looks a beautiful and very scenic place . ;)

I find your game style very intriguing, always.  Your ability to build on slopes and still have it look realistic is outstanding.  I have always said I have no patience for this type of terrain, but I have been challenged to do my next region on something a little more less flat.  I think I may try, but no where near like yours.
I can't wait to see the stream coming down from the mountains.  I hope you may have some pictures from that area as well next update.  ;)

Hello dear Mallorca visitors  ;D

TTC, thanks for that cup of tea. Really welcome   ;)

sebes, c.p., bat, Alfred.Jones, thanks for your kind comments and support  ¡¡¡, you make this MD worth it  ;D

Pat, I plan to release most of the custom content I am making for Mallorca, it is just a matter of time  ;)

Badsim, this is a really nice challenge  . I can already visualize a SC4 Spelocanto's version ...  $%#Ninj2 ...  ::) .I have to agree with you about the smallest things being the hardest to achieve  ;) .Also,  I want to specially thank you because of your mastery when it comes to create lots  . You really opened my mind and made my cities creation "easier"  $%Grinno$%  &apls &apls

Rooker, it will take some time until I develop that stream... I hope you find the waiting time enjoyable as well  ;)

Now, with no further delay, some more pictures... before I continue the military base, which will require many custom content, I noticed that the docks area near the train station was not finished yet....

Port de Soller - Finishing the Docks

This is the area being worked.... I placed an industrial tower as a placeholder....

The first lot was a TE connection, which included the end for the docks...also some boats props here and there.... I also placed one of my old Shore Conforming Seawalls to set the break between the different docks areas....

I also BATted a small semi-diagonal piece to fill in the other remaining lot....

.. it starts to look better, but far from what I wanted... but I decided to continue with the other fishing docks...

... I created some more custom models and lots, and started to place them....

... they dont look exactly as expected (again  ::) ) but it gave the desired look to the area...

.... some perspectives on the work in progress...

.... I hope you like them...

... and some overall looks on the whole situation...

... from the military base point of view...

... and I decided  to go back to the diagonal docks.... I hope you can already notice the change...  $%Grinno$%
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update10/JRJ_MCA_Update10_11.jpg)

... well, I guess here you can see it better....

... I decided to re-BAT the filler piece again, and this time it covers all the tiles...

.... this way I could add some additional details, like the concrete pylons and some other stuff...

... and the whole area looks more "solid" now....  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update10/JRJ_MCA_Update10_15.jpg)

For those who didnt notice what I am talking about,  :P ,this is the final lots combination I used for the area.

I hope you find those pictures nice and interesting  ;D

Hola Jeronij,

Looking at your new updates is always a good playtime and an excellents source of inspiration for me!
Especially tracking the development of your "buildings on slopes" area is fascinating (the reason is obvious - I have some hills in my region too  :D)
And your BATing achievements are really fantastic, both more "serious" objects and all this small stuff which adds a lot to the general look of the area!  &apls
The finishing work is often most time-consuming, but it usually decide if the area looks alive and realistic or not, and you know it very good

Great effort your putting into this Jeronij. Such detail! Though I did notice that your water texture is very transparent and as a result you can see the seabed, looks kind of nasty, might want to change that if you get the change. For all I know you did it to make it easier to build stuff in the area.

I really can't wait to see this military base and the main city on Mallorca!

Hello dear Mallorca visitors ¡¡¡

I am late, but I am  ;D , so I firstly present you my excuses for the long time between updates....  ::) ... and I hope you find this one interesting and nice  ;)

Before the update starts, I want to thanks all the members who dropped a post in this MD. All your comments are really encouraging and welcome

Alfred.jones, Adam, TTC, vester, paroch, bat, David, Pat, Matt, Dustin, panthersimcity4, Rayden, Berethor, Joan, ussagus, ejc, thanks for your kind words and feedback   ¡¡¡

Yoman, I am constantly playing with the terrain parameters and textures in this region, so you may expect to see some changes in the terrain and water textures from time to time... I hope you dont mind  ;)

figui, well, probably I am a bit crazy...  $%Grinno$% ... but I think every SC4 city is unique and not repeatable, so each and every one deserves as much care as you can give it  ;D  :D  :D

xiziz, best luck in your military service.... unfortunately Port de Soller is quite far from the Swedish seas... you are missing something really nice  ;D

badsim, thanks for such pleasant comments from a master

... and with no further delay, lets go with the pictures  ;) ¡¡¡

Port de Soller - The Military Base - Part 1 - The Commander's Villa

Lets remember where we are... its been a while since the last update.... :-[ ... we are continuing to build the military area in Port de Soller... not much done so far...  $%Grinno$%

The most remarcable thing in this first picture is the great effect acomplished with Ennedi's custom waves mod, wich really gives a more realistic effect. Thanks Adam for such a (small and big at the same time )mod

In that corner was placed the Commander's Villa... I was not really satisfied with the model so far for two reasons.... the roof, which didnt look right, but I got better results in later projects  ;D , and the overall scale, which was a bit too small  ::) ... I tried to solve the last problem with more or less good results... see some pictures below....  ;)

A close-up, so you can see the details, and how out of scale the building is  &mmm
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_03.jpg)

Port de Soller - The Military Base - Part 1 - The Hangars and Control Point

Here you can see a lateral view on the building, and also another custom lot I created for the entrance/Control Point
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_04.jpg)

I added another custom lot. This time a repair hangar... later on I changed and completed it with some more details.... sometimes it is easy to miss some props here and there...  ::)

Another perspective....

And a close-up on the Control Point.... I have to admit that there is not much room for the vehicles there....  ::)

Port de Soller - The Military Base - Part 1 - Some Random views...

Time to relax and take some pictures.....

One of those typical front images.... slowly slowly the urban area is taking shape....

Some Nightlights at work...

This one is specially dedicated to David... I'd swear I can see him sitting on that restaurant in the train station....  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_10.jpg)

Port de Soller - The Military Base - Part 1 - The Ammo Silos

Before continuing I decided to re-scale the Villa Model in the MAX, and this is the new scale.... it fits much better with the overall area.. imo of course  :P ¡¡¡
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_11.jpg)

And now time for some more experimenting with custom lots's tresholds, retaining walls and foundations... first some walls demolition was needed
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_12.jpg)

... and once we have some room, time to place anothe custom lot, this time with some custom BATs as well.... the idea is to simulate some ammunition silos build inside the mountain.... I hope you like the result....  ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_13.jpg)

In this picture you can (hopefully) better see how the silos are excavated on the mountain
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/update11/JRJ_MCA_Update11_14.jpg)

And a last look on the area. I specially like this picture because it starts to have lots and lots of details, and you must carefully look at it to see them all  ;)

I hope you like the update. I really liked making it

You are right about that last picture having lots of detail. When the entire area is finished it will be spectacular (it's close right now though). The villa does look better in its new form and fits in well. As far as the entry point goes... I think you wouldn't want to give them much room to go through (you want them to slow down/stop). The ammo silos look like they turned out well too. My only suggestion for them (and it would be a minor one) would be to change the texture on the top a bit so that the part up against the walll is a bit darker/weathered (to simulate all of the dirt that washes down the wall). Aside from that, great idea and great execution.

Another astonishing update, my friend!

I do agree that the taller villa looks better, it gives the building more of a presence that you'd think a commander's villa should have. Just another example of how much you pay attention to detail and how it has a fantastic outcome!

Can't wait to see more!

Absolutely stunning update.
Since youare paying attention to every little detail, I have an idea.
Your silo in the mountain side.  What if you took the yellow fence prop and raised it (in LE) high enough to appear as if it is at the road level.  Move the road one square to the left and make the upper part three squares flat and than the down hill part.  Make sense?
Other wise, I'm loving it.  &apls It's always nice to see some new work from you.

Great region jeronij, and the pics from Port de Soller...excelent!!

i have one question for you...

since the beginning i was never able to build rural diagonal roads, whenever i try they became normal roads, can you explain me how to do that!?!

Many thanks and keep going with all your excelent projects, you have gave a lot to all the people who love SC4D.

Your silos look excellent there, though I would hate to be driving on that road on top of them, no fence to stop you from driving off :P Oh well, games fault. The control point is very nice also, there isn't much room for vehicles to pass, so they have to slow down to be checked, think of it that way :P

As always looking forward to more

Wonderful update, jeroni! And as many who have gone before me have said, the detail work is amazing.

As I look at the overview (right before the night shots) I see so much more on that hillside that I'd have ever thought possible. The military base was worth waiting for as well, but to be sure, I'd never have guessed there would be room for it!

Truly, many will marvel, but few will achieve!

Hi Jeronij,

Another stunning update.  My favourite is the apartments at night - so many night lights, but not too many.  It really does look magnificent. And at that time of night I can imagine the noise, as all of the families will be gathering together for their dinner, with much chatting and laughing.  Spannish towns (and I mean the not too touristy ones) by the sea really do have a special feel in the evening.  In fact, I think I can see myself sitting in that bar as well, with a nice large glass of cold Cruzcampo.

And your custom BATs and lots just add to the uniqueness here.

I look forward to more.

Paul

Hola Jeronij,

It's a real pleasure to look at your updates, so much interesting details and great views  :)
I'm glad my waves look good in your harbour! I want to make a few things more with terrain, rocks etc. but I would like to have more free time  ;D

Both custom lots and other details are fantastic, but I must say I'm really impressed of the city general view - as you said it slowly takes shape, but at this moment we can see that it will be one of the most realistic and beautiful SC4 cities!
I'm very curious how will look the military base, I like amunition silos very much! But people living in all these buildings close to them can have unusual attractions from time to time  :D

This is positively brilliant!  I really like...well...all of it! &apls

Now, what interests me is the sidewalk texture on some of your streets, but not all.  The sidewalks I am talking about are where they are very narrow, andright up against the street, lacking the usual grass separation that the game uses as default in industrial and low-density areas, which I notice that you have also, in different places.  I would really like to know about that.  Specifically, it's the street in the bottom left curving up the hill in the image below.

Hello to all again....  ::)

After some time I have the opportunity to develop my cities a little bit more, so I have continued to work a bit more with my beloved city Port de Soller  ;D

Because my lack of time, I will probably create less custom models, and I will use other creator's ones... for special cases I will make my own of course. Now I will start to post some old pictures, August 2008 aprox., which will give you an overall idea about the situation at that time. After some updates, you will see me using more "standard" custom content, but I am sure the result will be equally good, if not better  :D :D

I also hope to be able to accomplish the MD section rules, and keep this one alive and post at least once per month

Now lets start with the pictures:

First a view on the old town center:

As you may notice, the old road system needs some improvement.... more on this shortly...  ;)

I also made some changes in the fishing area. I demolished the old houses, and placed some modern market facilities, which will be more helpful for the city's budget  ;D

Next step was the military base Officces and guard guard corps. I made the building with the MAX, and I made a first lot using the surrounding seawalls models.... I was not really satisfied with the look of it, nor with the props layout...

So I made a new seawalls version for this area of Port de Soller, and I worked a little more the lot pros placement...

This time it was looking better...  ::)

But the pier was still empty.... more buildings were needed....

So I made another set of buildings to fill that area...

This time are dorms for the marines....

Now the area starts to look much closer to the wanted result...  ;D

Finally, to end with this update, some distant views on the currently worked area...

In the next update, Mayor jeronij will finish this first pier, and start working with the second one....  ;)

I have totally updated my plugins folder this year. I have the whole SC4D LEX DVD installed, plus some extra GB collected here and there, until the incredible amount of +4GB in my plugins folder...  ??? ... I am amazed that this old game still works with all that load  ::)  :D :D ... but this gives me much much more flexibity and potentiall to create beautiful cities with less effort. I will probably sacrifice some realism in the incoming updates, but I'll try to keep everything solid and consistent as much as I can.

I hope you like the new pictures

Hello Jeroni,
It's very impressive how a simple military pier can make a update looking fantastic.
This one is looking excellent my friend, those lots done are stunning, like your BATs.
Port of Soller itself is looking great too, I like the slope of the road.
The second pier is looking promising, when we see the way you've done the first, we can't imagine what you will done to the second one ! ;D
Also, there's already a lot of work to do to the city, but like you have said, build your city very slooooowly with a lot of details.

Hello to all again  ;D

Scirius, I am using C.P.'s Painted Desert Terrain Mod  (//http://javascript:opennew('lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1639'))for this area. However, I have customized cliffs and sand and water mods, and the terrain parameters are also slightly modified. It is also possible that in the future the terrain can be modified even further.... what are these HD textures that everybody is talking about...  ::)  ;) ??

Joan, I hope you like the new color effect for this new update...  ;D

All:, thanks for stopping here and dropping a support word  (even after seeing almost the same images again and again.... $%Grinno$% ...  :-[ .... <-- I'll try to change this and post less picture to make it less repeptitive  ()stsfd() )

So then, enough wording and lets go for some pictures.... lets finish the military piers once for all ¡¡¡  :D :D

a) This picture shows the connection piece I made to join the two piers... I know the ships are missing... yet... this is something I have to work out sometime soon...

b) This picture shows the initial second pier lot. The lot lacks the buildings yet, this is only the docks and the basis....

c) Another perspective to allow a better view on the details here and there...

e) And an overall look to the two piers.

f) There are several months between this and the next picture, almost a year .... After creating the initial lot, I wanted to create some custom buildings, based in the original military facilities there, but I wasnt able to finish that model. It remains still unfinished in the deeps of my hd.... and when I recently tried to finish it, I couldnt find the inspiration....  ::)  $%Grinno$%

g) So I decided to use a "shorcut" to finish the lot... and hopefully give it a still credible look  ;D

h) Added a big light tower, because the works in this area are taking place day and night....

i) .... did I say night..  ;)??

EDIT: This is a closeup on the last lot. I feel proud of this one, so I wanted to show it better ;) ¡¡¡

I hope you like the overall military base layout.... it took a really looooong time to complete.... time which can not be seen here.... time invested in the Max.. in the Reader... in the LE...in the SC4Tool... In this new Port de Soller 2009 stage I will try to focus on building the city than in creating custom content for it... but some cc here and there does not harm that much, does it  ;) ??

Thanks again to all for the nice feedback

I beg to differ when you say these are the same pics over and over. The same area, yes. But each time there is something new to see. I like the construction lot area you did. It gives the area a sense of progress and development, which is a nice balance/contrast with the aged houses on the hill. You may not think it shows from the pics, but after having hammered away at things in the BAT on its own for hours, I can tell this area has had some work put into it. Great to see it come together.

Too bad the original building you wanted for that piece didn't came through, but what you've done to solve this is great!  &apls

And your right about the cc, it definitely doesn't harm, but it does make it look better  ;)

Hello again dear Mallorca visitors  ;D ¡¡¡

Better later than ever....  ::) ... I finally found enough free time to prepare and post some more pictures about the Port de Soller development. Since the fishing harbour and the navy base are more or less completed -still some ships  missing yet  ::) - Mayor Jeroni decided to move inland and try to reproduce a RL ammo bunkers existing in this mountainous area of Port de Sóller, keeping in mind the unavoidable game limitations...  $%Grinno$%  :D  :D

First some replies to your always encouraging feedback

Matt, thanks for your comment, I am glad you see it this way, the way it really is  ;)

Arthur, thanks for your always kind support

Guillaume, HD, HQ...  ::) ... who cares...??  $%Grinno$% ... the result is the important thing here  :D :D

Stijn, thanks for the compliment, I am glad you like the second pier, it took a while to find and put all the props and textures togheter, but the result wasnt that bad  ;D

Kimcar, thanks for your ongoing feedback and support  ;D

Luke09, thanks, it is always hard to keep the section's quality standards.... but I am on my way to this  ;)

Pete, thanks for your feedback ¡¡

_maciex_ ,  (https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_SCPolska.jpg)  ;)

Luciano, thank you, this was a very special model, and I like the final result as well  ;D

kelis, Gracias ;)

David, thanks for dropping some feedback, and well, what can I say?, I live in a (most of the time) sunny island

Pat, also thanks for your feedback. I hope you like whats coming next  ;)

metarvo, thanks, I mentioned that this construction lot was special for me, and I am really glad you like it.... what will it grow from here...??... we'll see ...  $%#Ninj2

nerdly_dood, thanks for the feedback, I am glad you find it realistic

danielcote, yes it is a custom made lot, which includes several custom made props, besides some other excellent props from BSC & SFBT

UPDATE 15   -  THE "HIDDEN" AMMO SILOS

Before we proceed inland, I wanted to post this picture, because it shows some changes from earlier ones, since I had to rework the area, and also modify some lots and remove some props which were lost during my plugins folder update. I hope the new result is equally good as the previous one...  ;D
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_01.jpg)

So, lets start moving... this is the mountainous area mentioned above. I left the grid on so you can better appreciate the terrain contours....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_02.jpg)

Some network infrastructure was needed to give access to the area... it also helps to create some "buildable" terrain, and spot the better locations for the incoming lots...
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_03.jpg)

Initially a multiple bunker was placed in the only flat terrain area there... it is the same lot used in the navy base, and perhaps there is too much wall texture there, but it is the best placement I was able to accomplish  ;D . Also a small maintenance hangar and some officces are place in the main area.
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_04.jpg)

After this I searched some other alternative placement for additional bunkers... after all, in real life they are as much dispersed as possible...  ;D
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_05.jpg)

I created a variant from the original bunkers lot, and I found some additional places for them, which are more or less credible, and also difficult to access in case of an hipotetical aerial bombardement....  ::)
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_06.jpg)

I added some trees here and there to help camouflage, and this is the final result, clockwise.... in this view there is not much that can be seen from the bunkers base... a bad approach path in case of bombing raids....  $%Grinno$%
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_07.jpg)

Turning left, this is the most exposed side of the area... but even so, and attack from this side wouldnt be able to harm one of the bunkers....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_08.jpg)

Turning left again, only one of the bunkers and the hangar-offices building could be hit from this side...
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15/JRJ_MCA_Update15_09.jpg)

And finally my favourite one...  ;D ... where are the bunkers ??? ??  :D :D :D
\/

Great work on those bunkers, quite realistic besides the wall texture, that is too high in my opinion. Maybe you could try and make a texture thats more like the rock mod your using, so it would appear that your bunkers are really built in the hill, just a thought.

Though I say it again, it's already great work!

Very good, Jeroni!  The piers look great.  I can't see the bunkers in the last picture, but I'm guessing that they're on the other side of that hill, which would really place them close to the center of the pic.  Placing the bunkers inside the hill is quite realistic.  Keep up the good work!

Hello to all again  ;D

Thanks for the kind feedback

I have not much time for replies today  ::), so I'll go direct to the point  ;)

As mentioned some time ago in a previous update, I have the luck to be able to test some of the new amazing terrain textures created by Ennedi and Rayden  ;D

This is a Sandstone mod which fits quite nicely with the real mountains around the area...
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15A/JRJ_MCA_Update15A_01.jpg)

Adam (Ennedi) also provided me with some detachmentn textures, which give some interesting ways to "decorate" the terrain...
\/

Another nice example....

These are the cliffs under the Cap Gros lighthouse...
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15A/JRJ_MCA_Update15A_05.jpg)

And an overall view on the bay... from this zoom level the rock mod looks magnificent  ()stsfd()
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15A/JRJ_MCA_Update15A_06.jpg)

\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE15A/JRJ_MCA_Update15A_07.jpg)

And finally another example about the versatile detachment textures...

The coastline looks really great Jeronij, I'm glad and honoured you decided to show our poor attempts in so exclusive place as Port Soller

This rock mod is a bit repetitive now. Those repetitions will be removed in future versions, but it will take some time - it needs changing a few game parameters which affect other textures too, so we will have to make new terrain textures. But now I have a little tip: You can remove some repetitions by tricky sculpting the coastline  ;D. You can take a terraforming tool (I suggest God Mode ones with decreased size and strength - especially the soft valley, soft hill and softening tool from the levelling group (Shift 2 -4, Shift F3 -F5, edit: switch to Zoom 4 or 5) work good in this task, and move the tool over repetitive formations here and there. This way you will distort a bit some of them and they will not look so repetitive. The same can be done on flat surfaces when more than one texture appears - very subtle softening, raising or lowering the terrain can help to show more textures. Personally I like very much this kind of playing with terrain textures. Of course you must take care about anything which was built around  ;D

Adam

Edit: me and Silvio will think about a few terrain textures for your terrain mod to harmonize them better with the coastline. As I remember from Ibiza, rocks and ground near the sea are rather yellow/grey, and the characteristic red ground is visible mostly inside an island. We will try to make something similar.

Hello dear Mallorca visitors  ;D

Time for another update about the ongoing works in Port de Soller. I have very limited playing time actually, so things are moving slowly around the harbor... but moving after all  ;)

If you recall the last regular update, the major has finished the military bunkers in the hilly area in the back of Port de Soller. Lets have a look to the current situation. The new urban development will take place in the area to the bottom left of the picture.
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_01.jpg)

Another perspective on the area. Initially the mayor will build one of the sides of the canal... .there is no much room in there, and many things must be build yet....  ::)
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_02.jpg)

The first missing thing in a spanish town was the church. I placed a brittish one, it is not very mediterranean... but it is the one which looks closer to the real one.
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_03.jpg)

A church is always a call for new residents, so the small empty tiles were quickly filled with new houses....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_04.jpg)

Also important is a sports field, soccer is very popular in Spain, and there is also one there in real life....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_05.jpg)

So, the first phase on the canal area was finished....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_06.jpg)

Finally a zoomed out view about the whole area....
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_07.jpg)

And from another point of view...
\/
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/MalLorca/UPDATE16/JRJ_MCA_Update16_08.jpg)

I hope you like the small progress, and I hope to be able to post some more pictures soon

Adam, thanks for the trick. I'll give it a try the next time that I play the city. Also these terrain textures look quite promising. You are right about the main ground colors in the islands, and I am sure you'll find something really nice for it
