Title: Banished!
Post by: Mr_Maison on February 14, 2014, 05:41:55 PM
I would love to know what members in these forums think of the new city builder. Anyone here buying it?

I have been part of it (I mean that I have followed the development) ever since it started, some two years ago, I guess.

It looks excellent, minus a few minor details and seemingly very interesting to play, a sure-play for me, that's for sure. It will give me a break from SC4 just like The Settlers and Civ III have been.

There also might be some addons and maybe even some Mod possibilities. That surely is making "Banished" interesting.

A must have for dreamers like me. ;)

From what I'm reading, the developer is planning on making a mod kit after launch. That really did it for me.

Anyone here playing it. Got my copy Tuesday and I'm lovin it. The simulation is so deep you have to watch when children are born and people die. Luke did a great job with this one.  &apls

I'm surprised there isn't more talk about this here. We finally got another city builder that's made with real city builders in mind and will be moddable.

Yap, since three days and having fun also.Still don't understand the workplay fully yet, but I surely will with time. Got a town of 34 and in its 5th year sofar, just having minor problems with food and wood here and then......

I bought the game yesterday and have mixed feelings about it.  I am very interested in what the mod support looks like and if this could be modded into a true city builder.  I don't really consider it a city builder right now, more of a strategy game.  I have been having a lot of fun with it so far but after Googling how to properly gather food and such it seems the game may lack the depth to hold my attention.  It seems like it has potential but the building, resource and skill trees seem a bit sparse.  I am concerned I will run out of things to do in a few days like I did with Anno or SC2013.

Either way I am not disappointed in my purchase as it was a reasonable price and I have already gotten 8-15 very enjoyable hours out of the game which is more than I can say for many $20 titles.  It is also incredible that Luke did this all himself with the exception of some of the music I believe.

Modding really seems to have taken off, and some of the SC4 Batters have started adding content for it

http://www.ill-tonkso.co.uk/

So far the list of mods I'm using for my MD are quite small (see 1st post)

http://www.city-builders.info/cb-discuss/village-of-windthorpe

and I would recommend the Llama Mod, except when they escape and spend the winter out with the deer

Banished is currently the main game I play. I have been addicted since it came out and now with the new mods it is getting even better.

Its my winding down at the end of the day game, currently playing Windthorpe (starting conditions was set to medium, see link in my last post), another village which had its starting conditions set to hard can't seem to get the population past fifty at the moment, and just for a challenge I've just started Map Seed: 517937420 which has an Island landing site I'm still trying to decide whether to play it as easy, medium or hard ... hard might make a good competition ... who can survive the Island   :D

I've looked at it a few times on this site

http://colonialcharter.com/

but as its the equivalent of adding the NAM to SC4 Deluxe I decided it wasn't something I wanted to try just yet plus it also looks like a couple of the Mods I'm already using aren't compatible with it so it would have to be started on a new map seed and I'm not quite ready to start any new villages.

The Colonial Charter completely changes the game and adds a lot of new things to the game. I personnally love it.

Below is my old Downtown Center.......made with this Mod.

I must admit its very very tempting ... I think once I've gone as far as I can with the three villages I'm currently playing it might be time for a change

It was four villages, but this one (which was my first successful village) is no more

http://city-builders.info/cb-albums/item/210-dilwoodview-by-catty/group/22-banished

and this one is the one I'm doing a MD on

The other two villages I haven't bothered to take any pictures  of them   :(

One thing to note about the colonial charter mod is that it includes a bunch of other mods that you are probably using. What is everyone's highest population so far? I've reached 225 many times but always seem to struggle at that point.
Title: Re: Banished!
Post by: catty on January 27, 2015, 02:35:57 PM
I got the population up to just under 500 in the village I'm doing as an MD, then sometime after year 30, I got an outbreak of scarlet fever which killed off quite a few, in turn as it was late summer not all the crops were brought in and so the survivors starting dying of starvation, before winter was over I was down to about 50 villagers not including the kids, it was a couple of years of struggling to balance the jobs around the village even now when I'm about ready to do the 50 year post in my MD I've still only got the population back up to about 150.

The last one I stopped at 4500 or so, it was starting to get really slow on my computer. Now, I do not really play much at this time, still working on the SC4 MFP1 set and on some Farming Simulator mods, but I have this little town of 220 that I am enjoying on some evenings without really forcing it to expand more, but more trying to make it look better and more real and cozy looking.

wow, 4500, impressive. I tired of the game, even with all the great mods, but forced myself to go for a high population just for a goal. I surpassed my goal of 2000 and haven't played again since. The game slowed down to a crawl on the highest sim speeds but ran fine still in the first couple lower sim speeds.

4500 is not really impressive, since there are 6000 and even 8000 and more out there. I have even seen a 10000 town of Banished somewhere, everything, mostly raw materials, was imported.
At 4500 I lost interest in playing the game, making it less controllable and less interesting to look at, sometimes even repetitive and it became to freakin slow and sometimes jammed on me for a few seconds/minutes, making it boring to play with.
So, these days I create smaller villages, max up to 1000, which play better on my computer, are more interesting to watch and look at and most important, I have all the control that I want over it. I like to play to make things realistic, which is more important than those challenges and making them bigger than others.
i like details, which look good and interesting. like this living space add-on that my villagers are building when having problems finding space. I also follow every individual,s family tree.

I think I'm with Fred on this one, for me its about having a nice stable village with enough villagers to do all the jobs and have a reasonable numbers of labourers so if disease strikes or its a bad winter with a lot of deaths I'm not having to juggle people from job to job and that I've also got plenty of food supplies, so if I do take in nomads there is enough food to feed them and Inns to house them.

Does anyone here use Windows 8 with Banished and Steam, I don't but Jmouse does and she is having a bit of grief with ... not to sure what ... see over here  fixed   :)

PS: Fred I love those pictures and especially on your second to last picture there is a building on the bottom right hand corner sitting over some water it looks

Sorry, I cannot help there, I am still on XP  with my gaming computer, besides, it plays better with those older games I love...Simcity, Serf City or Settlers I, Farming Simulator,Tropico and Civ III.

For that bldg on water, some buildings in those new mods can be built partially on water, as the picture below shows, as long as they have support on their 4 posts. With this you can do some strange, interesting ,nice and different things.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs3.postimg.org%2Fihnkxwtsz%2FScreenshot252.jpg&hash=d1de5dc4a745691bf1448f6bb0a0ec730c78f4e7)

While at it, here is a pic just outside of town, the northside, where my villagers keep the Llamas, Chicken, Sheep and Bisons and some fruit trees and veggie fields. You can also see that I am micromanaging almost everything, something we cannot do anymore, when over 1000 pop.......

The bison look great

... after you have been playing for bit I really start longing to have different colored cows other than those red and white ones ... and yes I know about the mod to turn them black and white, but it would be so nice to have different colored ones all in the same field.

And your first picture has sold me on downloading the colonial charter mod ... just not quite yet, will finish the MD I'm doing first ... my goal for that is eventually about 500 villagers with all of them living in nice stone houses once I achieve that I'll be happy   :)

I forgot to mention, if you want to build homes on canals like this with the CC {Colonial Charter}, you will need the Flattening Terrain Tool, which makes it possible to sculpt the terrain for such a use.

Btw, there is a mod that gives you different patched cows, the Milk Mod, but again, they are black and white. I know what you mean by different coloured cows. It is those red and white Ayrshires, Hereford and Simmentals or even Angus and Charolais cattle that would be fun to have. Perfect for meat/beef production.

Yes I've got the Flattening Terrain Tool, probably use it way to much, have now downloaded a mod for growing crops on hills so I might not be as tempted to flatten things.

You expect the sheep and chickens to pretty much look the same, its just the cows that don't look right

The sheep in New Zealand all tend to be white, chickens brown   ;D

As for the cows, I think its just the way the picture came out, I've just been thru the picture album for the village at CB (village no longer exists) and found another picture of them taken a lot closer up, unfortunately it was chucking it down with rain at the time so its not a great picture

Yeah, I have these red cows also, they are Herefords. Then I have the black and white Holstein cows, which produce milk and meat.

I don,t think that sheep come in other colours in Banished, so white is what I have too.

I have both chickens, the white Leghorns and brown regulars.

Plus I have the buffalos/bisons, the Llamas and the pigs. I have no picture of the pigs, I will have to take one the next time I start the game and add it here.

The hillgrowing crop mod is a lot of fun and adds a whole new aspect to Banished agriculture. I only use the flattening tool for the waterside of the villages, simply to adjust for bldgs or to make it more interesting to look at.

Those black and white cows proved too much of a temptation ... I had to have them ... so I have just finished downloaded Colonial Charter Excellent Adventure   ()stsfd()

Couldn't resist having a look, so I disabled my MD Mods and switched on CC for a new village, it looks great haven't got the cows yet but no-one is going hungry this winter ... they might be getting really fed up of tomatoes (see attachment) as I'm currently growing rather a lot of them   ;D

Slightly upset about the Fountain Mod and Decorative Items Pack going red when I tried activating them for the new village, but as you know most of those two mods have been included in CC, unfortunately not the little stilt houses from the Fountain Mod or the Greenhouse from the Decorative Items pack and I'm really fond of the greenhouse as all the seedling from them can go to the trading post and will pretty much pay for anything I want to buy from a trader, but a quick internet search later and it seems someone has done a CC compatible version of both mods ... it means having two menus one for the CC version and another menu for the non-cc mod but a small price to pay.

Hmmmm..... I have both and many more that turn red, but as long as you keep the more important ones on top of the list, there are no problems. So I have the CC plus the Fountain mod and decorative items, all in one, without having the double menu. All a matter of putting the priority up and lower on the cheat activation menu list. Below is a sample screenshot of my some of my Mods. Many of them are red......and I have not had any problems.

Just like any other game it will take some time to get everything smoothly going. Not quite my style since I find the village a little too square, but nice going. The most important part is that you have fun.

No need of thanking.

I did not say to stop worrying about the redturning mods, but to first investigate why it is turning red [sometimes you have doubles and when it is, delete it or adjust the loading order, sometimes it just does not work with another mod and crashes the game, then you delete one of them, sometimes  it doesn,t do anything and then do simply not bother]  and then establishing a loading order in the modmenu. Always make a copy of the map you are trying new mods on, just in case.  ;)

Once you get an order and understand the modding orders, the news mods can be absolute fun. Have fun.

I've started another one, now with the Colonial Charter Mod, Adam & Eve style (a couple with only a storage cart with some tools, firewood and loads of potatoes), large map plains and rivers on harsh weather. So far I have survived the first 3 winters and the family now it's 8 adults and two child living on 4 wood houses. Quite challenging this way. :)

That's what my test village is for, plus it means I'm getting familiar with what's available in CC, things like the sawmill I've got a separate mod for that, but a sawmill is also available in CC ... my current thinking is if I delete the sawmill out of my MD village, save the village and then restart the village with the CC mod activated I can then put in the CC sawmill ... but at this stage am just still playing around.

So far I have survived the first 3 winters and the family now it's 8 adults and two child living on 4 wood houses. Quite challenging this way. :)

:bnn:

I picked the Silk Road as my test village, but then decided that as my MD village was using a medium village start (valleys and a large map) I should really stick to the same in my test village ... but it was fun while it lasted.

...but it looks like my MD is going to continue with added CC content...

I decided to stop my MD at year 50, have uploaded the 50 year pictures to the MD picture album but as yet still have to do the last post in the MD itself, and have now re-organised my mod list, the cc compatible version of the Decorative Items Pack is looking nice and green as its creator has gone thru and removed everything that is now in the Colonial Charter mod, but the cc compatible version of the Fountain Mod stayed red and on top of which the stilt houses and Inn wasn't in it, so I have gone back to using the original mod, went thru the rest of my mods and had a purge just keeping things like the Mountain fields, etc

And started a new village

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcity-builders.info%2Fmedia%2Fcom_easysocial%2Fphotos%2F217%2F2484%2Fbanished0002_original.jpg&hash=4cfc50b869f1a1937a256f2002c375ab82fe3df2)

Really like the new buildings available in CC

Looking good. About some mods turning red, well, do not worry too much about. Try to find out why they turn red and if you do not find the actual problem, just leave them on, but make sure that they are lower on the menu list than the more important ones.
This way even the things from the Fountain mod will load but what is available in the CC mod will be overwritten by the one higher in the list. This is what I do all the time, and I have no problems with them.

I'm down to three red mods, the rest are green   ()stsfd(), so I'm pretty happy especially when I read a post over on the CC site that says they are looking at adding in the "Fountain Mod" Inn and houses to CC, anyway I though I'd post a few pictures

Fred you should recognize this mapseed from SimPeg

Yeap, I recognize it well since I am playing on it also, but at the moment, I am pretty busy finishing two more categories of the MFP1 set (Modern Farm Props) for SC4.
As soon as I have done a little more on this island I will show some pics too, a bit different from yours, since I do not like organizing my buildings and fields, but build them in a way as the terrain lets me.
Nice going. I think to keep the food production on the mainland is a good idea enough for me to take the same steps. But I will really keep the main village on the island and if needed maybe enlarge it a little to the south later on.

Fred

Edit. btw, nice going to get rid of the red mods, I myself have about 50 percent of them in red, but it doesn,t really bother me as long as I keep them in line on the menulist. If the fountainmod will become part of the CC, that surely would be convenient, it will make another mod green.
Title: Re: Banished!
Post by: catty on February 19, 2015, 04:23:15 PM
I've been trying to follow the shore line as much as possible, but quite large areas of the village are having to be knocked down and rebuild as I build down to the waters edge in a lot of places, the eventual aim is that most of the villagers will live on the island and be surrounding by the internal stockade, food production and industrial activities will be done on the mainland and they will be surrounding by the external stockade and gatherers, hunters and foresters will be out in the forest surrounded by their own smaller stockade with safe paths set up to the village gates ... its going to take a lot of logs to complete which is why I currently have switched on the debug menu so I can get an unlimited number of logs and stones when required ... I'm not using it for anything else as I don't want to cheat, so everyone in the village is stuck eating grapes and pumpkins for the foreseeable future until I can afford to buy some different seeds from the trader.

As for the situation with the red mods, I found I was able to get rid of a lot as I no longer needed them as they were now available in the latest CC, things like the official mods, advanced blacksmith, llamas, sawmills, dairies, bakeries, windmills, specialized stockpiles and a few others I can't remember have now been included, also things like the "Better Fields" mod are no longer required as its also part of the CC, and I've just switched off the "Wildlife" mod as some of that also appears to be part of the CC.

CC New Frontier is over half a GB in size so I have a feeling once I start really looking thru the menus I'm going to be getting rid of some of the mods I have in addition to CC not that there is very many these days ... main one is the fountain mod so I could have castles (+ walls).

The new Colonial Charter Mod - New Frontier the link to it is in a previous post, you can have the tepees, etc as props or convert them so people are living in them or make them a storage area, the same for the large round ones and the longhouse ... just be careful if you do as they require things like muskets and arrowheads to do the conversion.

QuoteI am amazed to see that some folks still play Banished

If it was still the original Banished then you would be right, but the Colonial Charter Mod has made all the difference, someone asked me over at CB if I'd recommend it and I used SimCity 4 vanilla as opposed to SimCity 4 Deluxe as the example of the difference between the two.

I don't like the flying ducks the latest CC version had added to the game, that's till I found the ducks hides and I've been adding them along the riverbanks, etc to get rid of the ducks that way, and the extra protein will be good for the villagers   ;D

One of the main advantages of Banished is you can keep a number of your previous village saves and if you don't like what you have done you can just start again using a previous save

Mining Settlement with Stone Quarry

As you can't remove quarries once you start one and I didn't like where I'd put this one as I decided that given the high death rate in the Banished mines a Cemetery would make more sense in this location, so going backwards in now looks like this

Also the castle walls have been finished in this area

Colonial Charter is literally turning Banished into a new game, the latest New Frontier is only just starting to bring in the new options, if you look at this picture here

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcity-builders.info%2Fmedia%2Fcom_easysocial%2Fphotos%2F354%2F2977%2Fbeehive-v20024_original.jpg&hash=1eee2d273298142675e24bed4c6bba59103ec01a)

from my latest village, the two houses in front of the fields are actually 6 houses (2 ground floor, 2 second levels and 2 top levels houses not sure just how many people are living in them) you plop the ground floor and then either add a top level or a second level and then a top level to finish the house off, they are also adding roads to a lot of the buildings as you can now plop things on roads like oak trees which is why I have oak trees so close to these houses front doors

If you want to see what the next CC version is going to give people the ability to do, take a look at the pictures in this topic

http://banishedpeople.freeforums.org/some-mod-impressions-t124.html

While the pictures on page 1 and 2 are great, its the pictures on pages 3 and 4 that are

http://colonialcharter.com/index.php/forum/welcome-mat/2256-colonial-charter-1-6-the-forge-awakens#20429

And while I tried to resist I've been playing around using the new cheat starting conditions "[cc] All the Wild Things" no starving to death or running out of building materials ... a villager might still died tripping over a bucket of milk in the forest and freezing to death is still a option, but otherwise you can concentrate on building your town   $%Grinno$%

The first image is very reminding of traditional South-East Asian riverine communities. I think it looks great!

We didn't used to be able to do docks they are a recent addition to the Colonial Charter Mod which keeps growing with each new version, the first CC version I downloaded was 243mb in size its now 947mb in size so almost the same size as the game itself   :)

I just fired this game up for the first time since the beginning. Also trying the CC 1.6 mod combined with Redketchup's New Medieval Town mod.

Looks real good   &apls

I've been avoiding downloading Redketchup's New Medieval Town mod tempting as it is, as it would add another 118mb to my mod folder, and that's already over a GB in size with just CC, Fountain Mod and a few others

:)

Banished 1.0.5 along with a new Modkit were released yesterday   :bnn:

QuoteChanges in 1.0.5:

    – UTF8 is now used instead of USC2.
    – Resource files can be in UTF8, USC2, UTF16, big and little endian. They'll be converted to UTF8 on load.
    – Memory usage allowance has been increased to 1 gigabyte, which should allow for larger mods.
    – All materials now use custom shading language SRSL instead of HLSL.
        – Any mods with custom materials will need to be modified to point to the new shaders and/or use SRSL.
    – Math library can now be compiled without the need for SIMD instructions.
    – OpenGL is now supported (but isn't currently being released with the PC version)
    – Data compilation is now in a separate DLL – CompileWin.dll – this can be swapped out for other platforms (consoles, mac, linux, etc)
    – Shader compiler is now in it's own DLL. Video DX9/DX11/GL dlls are no longer required for compiling shaders.
    – Added safety code to check for invalid and dangling pointers – this should make catching hard to find and rare issues easier.
    – Sped up mod details dialog for massive mods that have 10000's of files included. This should make looking at conflicts and uploading to Steam workshop easier.
    – Beta Mods and Mods newer than the currently released version can no longer be uploaded to Steam Workshop.
    – Nvidia and AMD GPUs in laptops should now be auto selected for use, instead of an Intel Integrated card.
    – Textile limit is now available for modders to use.
        – Cropfields, Fishing, Forester, Hunters, Orchards, and Pastures now have a configurable resource limit.
        – Livestock has a resource limit for the by product they make (eggs, wool, milk, etc) Note that if a by product isn't created because of the resource limit, the icon won't appear above the building.
        – Added textile to the Status Bar, Resource Limit window, and Town Hall UI
        – Added graphs for textiles to Town Hall UI
    – Fixed a bug that caused fonts from 1.0.4 to not load in 1.0.5. A UCS2 – UTF8 conversion wasn't made properly.
    – Fixed a bug that caused dropped resources (from citizen death/task cancelation) to drop in invalid places.
    – Fixed a bug that caused orchards to cause invalid data access and or data corruption if a citizen tried to harvest a tree, but the tree died before he got there.
    – Fixed a bug that caused potential memory corruption when cutting down an orchards trees.
    – Fixed a bug that caused a crash if game startup failed before memory allocation was available or was corrupt. It now properly displays an error.
    – Added better error message if the game runs out of memory due to too many mods loaded.
    – Fixed a bug that caused a crash when loading old mods that had custom materials. The game will no longer crash, however objects with those materials will not display. To fix this issue, mods should be updated to the newest mod kit version and update the materials.

It is unfortunately not animated, but am finding it quite useful to have, anyway its on the World of Banished website

Choo Choo : A Mod about Railroads and Trains by RedKetchup

http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=113

QuoteTrain Stations :
Inside this toolbar you should find 4 buildings. Each one is a specific merchant who will gather specific goods (food, textiles, utilities, and materials) and will exchange them for coins.

Trains and Wagons :
Inside this toolbar you will find 2 design of Train Engine, and 6 type of Wagons. The train engine is driven by train drivers, will take coins and buy things you want with it. The wagon will mainly have the purpose to serves as storage place, and also there is one (passenger one) will attract some nomads, and the cabooze will serve as a little house (mainly for the traindrivers , i hope^^). There is another one, the hand cart, which is mainly just decorative.

Railroads :
This toolbar allow you to design a railroad network inside your town and map. they are mainly 1x1 tiles and allow roads to be built under it. You will also find bridges (wood, wood structure and stone) and a bigger tunnel.

Hopefully you will find this little mod very funny and you will like it

;D

I think over the years we have all read posts on this site and others about having a mega plugin which had everything in it or at least everything someone considered to be essential.

Just released over on the Colonial Charter site is the MegaMod

http://colonialcharter.com/index.php/forum/mega-announcements/3253-banished-megamod

Modders are RedKetchup, Kid, Discrepancy, embx61, tanypredator, Wintin, Maal, Elfecutioner ... there is also a beta version of the next CC Mod 1.7 included as well, the mod list is here

http://colonialcharter.com/index.php/forum/mega-announcements/3255-list-of-mods-used-in-megamods

I would love to be trying this out, but I ditched using Windows 7 last week and became a Linux Mint 18 user and unfortunately Banished doesn't have a linux version yet ... will be using the PlayonLinux and GOG version of Banished once I get SimCity 3 and 4 working in a WinXP Pro VirtualBox.

The latest patch is 1.07 that includes changes made by Luke 'http://www.shiningrocksoftware.com/'  to increase flags and resource fields.   The modders at World of Banished and BlackLiquidSoftware responded by some wonderful new mods.   purringcat

You can also visit Paeng's site 'http://banishedpeople.freeforums.org' where he's provided links to everything useful in Banished.   Very helpful  :)

I got Banished for real cheap during the summer sales and I finally tried it out last week. The game is awesome, I fell in love with it instantly. Sure, it has some kinks but it's fun as hell.

Been playing it ever since it came out, now with all the Modelers addons, it's quite variable. ;)
