Title: A REALLY noob question
Post by: Krasner on February 22, 2016, 08:45:29 AM
Hello, and first of all sorry for my English, I will possibly make some horrible mistakes for an English-speaking person.

I started, a few weeks ago, to create my own buildings on gmax, and after quite a lot of experimentations, I finally finished something satisfying enough (a french level-crossing keeper house) to be textured. And my noob problem is I have no idea of how to do it. I search out for a tutorial on many websites, but I didn't find anything compete and clear. Where could find a good tutorial for beginners?

First of, can we see a picture of what you have ?

Have you model it, one wall one object ?
If so, you apply a UVW Map to the object.
(Found in the Modifier menu -> UV-Coordinates
or in the modifier list (http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/images/b/b7/Gmax_modify_tab.jpg) that you get access to when in the modify tab)

Then press M to get to the material editor.
or click on the icon with a yellow, a red and a blue ball.

Click New - > Standard
Next you need to attach a diffuse map (color map or brick).
- You either click on the some box to the left color sample for diffuse
- or click on maps, then the Map slot (http://www.lutrainz.uphero.com/Convert_Sketchup/Colours5.jpg) left of the diffuse.

Next you need to apply the material, click on Apply at the top.

Thanks a lot !  ;D

It is so simple at least. Here is my bat:

It is supposed to represent this type of house:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.noelshack.com%2Fminis%2F2016%2F08%2F1456172445-maison-de-garde-barriere.png&hash=36156bb19b555c3537496a97896f97100d8e163a) (http://www.noelshack.com/2016-08-1456172445-maison-de-garde-barriere.jpg)
These houses were built next to the road/railway crossings to allow an employee of the railway company to live in. This employee had to pull down the barrier each time a train was passing by. Yet, the barriers were modified to pull up and down automatically, and many of these houses had been destroyed, but there are still quite a lot all around France.

Cool project! I'm not a BATer, so can't help, though.

Cheers

So did you try what I wrote in my previous post ?

For the walls the UVW-map should be set to box. Click fit, now copy one number for one of dimensions and give it to the other two dimension. See how that looks.
Depending on your texture you adjust it further down until it looks good.

GMAX comes with tutorials, including materials.

Download from Turbosquid http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax (http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax) the Help file and Tutorial file and extract to the root directory of GMAX.

Open GMAX, click Help>Tutorials>Adding Materials and Mapping  :)

Cute little building, I like it
