Pretty and all but making them work how?

I've always loved designing my own airport in the game but anyone know a way to trick the game to think my big lovely airports are actually airports?  While I'm at it.. any advice for small airports in my smaller cities?  Before I've just used the maxis defaults to be small airports.

Hi Kyle,

It's possible to build a custom airport, then plop one of our functional Lots inside. For example, I use Muzzy's control tower at my large airports, and Barby's parking shuttles in my smaller airfields. Just be sure the functional building has power, water, and especially road access.

You can see links to the functional port sets here in the Catalog. I just restored that post to what it should be; it was seriously truncated earlier.

I'm writing a guide to airport planning right now, covering all sizes of airfields - though it'll be a while before it's done. Were you looking for suggestions on overall layout, or a specific construction issue?

Voltaire,

A guide or tutorial would be useful for quite a few people I am sure.  Myself for instance.  I live in a very rural area of Texas where the 'airport' we have is a landing strip for crop dusters.  As such, I have no real world reference for how a large international airport should look.  I can of course find photos of airports on the web and simulate it from that, but I really need to figure out how to use the new expanded airport lots.

Now if you want to know what cotton fields, oil fields and cattle ranches look like, I can tell you a lot about them.  ;)

A tutorial on runways was released with RMIP-2. If you search through your folders you may be able to dig that up.

I've seen the runways tutorial, which was helpful.  I need more of a 'putting it all together' guide using the new airport lots to make a realistic, functional airport in game.  I've not yet been brave enough to do the trial and error method (granted most of the cities I have built to this point have been rural type farming communities, and the default maxis landing strip works well enough for those).  Still I'd like to learn to use the new lots...and when it comes to it, I'll start a new city and play with the lots till I figure it out if it comes to that....just won't save it.

Maybe you should take a loot at these 3 forums:

- http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6600.0 (the basics, I used this also a lot)
- http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=12056.0 (information about different sizes of airports)
- http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8437.0 (the basics, but in step-by-step videos)

I hope it is now easier to start.  ;)

Excellent, I had not seen all of these, and the step by step was exactly what I needed.  Thanks.
