I don't know if this is the right place to post this, so feel free to move it.
Please tell me your secret to naming a city, I'm silly when naming a city.

Rady

I think tis is a very common problem. In the beginning, the hardest part was what to type into the "name yur city"-popup ... type - think - erase - think - type - think - erase - .....  ??? took me minutes to pass that popup  :P

So - why not use names of cities around you? One of the last regions i played, I started with my home town. When I expanded to other city tiles in that region, I took names of cities in my surroundings that actually lay in that direction. E.g., when I started a new city west of my "home town", I took the name of a city that actually lies in the west of my home town.

Of course you won't be able to resemble the actual (RL) size, but it's very easy to find new names that way.

Secon thought, this is nearly the right thread. Should have been placed in the "Playing the Game Help"-thread (at least that's waht I would consider to be the proper thread) - so you're just one level to deep   ;)
If it's a good idea, go ahead and do it. It's much easier to apologize than it is to get permission.

Well I'm sure a move will be in order soon  :)

Another idea is to use Google Maps. Decide what country best suits your MD and just zoom in on a random area. You'll have plenty of possible names in front of you.

I don't care about naming tiles. I just stick a number in the box, and name general areas in my head. Cities, suburbs, municipalities, prefectures et cetera don't have sqaure boundaries. I don't let SimCity4 try to tell me they do.  :P

You can:
- use existing city names.
- combine city names (Frankfurt + Mannheim = Frankenheim)
- or try one of the other options from this ST Omnibus article[linkie]

If you take a look at any atlas, you'll notice that many names are combinations of different pronouns and suffixes. Hill + mont . Jones + town. Harris + burg. Hart + ford. Man + chester . Dover + shire. By mixing and matching, you can again create thousands of names for your disposal. Below is a brief list highlighting some of my favorites:

Prefixes (excluding names): river, new, old, north, south, east, west, hart, heart, hill, bay, mountain, colum, rock, port, man, san, saint, pot, frank, hol, little, big, los, an, clear, lynn, lanc, gran, loch, lake,

Suffixes: ford, bus, side, shire, chester, mouth, port, burg(h), ville, town, city, dam, furt, fort, vale, mont, comb, ton, worth, ia, lia, haven, view, polis, minster,

this is a very good tip. Also, to create funny names you can combine with (parts of) your favorite food or colors. Plumchester, Strawhaven, Port Asparagus, East Bluebay,...
1. Install SC4+RH
2. Install LEX (CD&DVD helps) and latest NAM + updates
3. Play the game

5. Profit!

I like to use random name generators as I get really stuck when naming cities. Here are some of the ones I like:

Manon's Garden http://www.mv.com/users/ang/rp_placegen.html - this is my favourite one

Seventh Sanctum http://www.seventhsanctum.com/index-name.php - this has lots of different generators for different things, as it's an RPG resource site.

Cult of Squid http://www.squid.org/rpg-random-generator - lots of different kinds here, including a street name generator

Chinaroad Lowchens http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names.htm - not a name generator, but lots of themed lists. I love the nature names section.

Nanami

The name generator is the greatest idea but do you know the name gen that can make a southeast asian style city name?

Pat

I try to use places from my area or I just ask my friends for idea's...

BTW Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!! its good to see you over here

Sam, thank you so much!  That is exactly what I need!  I always have major problems naming cities, and this looks like it should solve my problems.  Thanks again!
