• Konzerthaus Berlin • [ Berlin concert hall ]

The concert hall in Berlin [Konzerthaus Berlin], called before the Berlin Theater [Schauspielhaus Berlin]
is a building on the Gendarmenmarkt square, in the center of Berlin that was used as a concert hall since
1994 and is the headquarters of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.Fue built by Friedrich Schinkel between
1818 and 1821.

[ In the picture you can see the building around the 1900 ]

• History •

This building is related to its predecessor, the National Theatre Carl Gotthard
Langhans, opened on January 1, 1802 and was devoured by fire in 1817.
The theater now stands in the square was inaugurated on June 18, 1821
with the premiere of the opera by Carl Maria von Weber Der Freischütz and is one of the
most important buildings of the time of Schinkel. During the Second World War
was burned and then rebuilt between 1979 and 1984, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Berlin.
Between 1996 and 1999, after German reunification, conducted further restoration work.

• Architecture •

The interior and exterior design, including many of the sculptures of composers, are work
of Christian Friedrich Tieck and Balthasar Jacob Rathgeber.

Among the sculptures displayed in the outer area are: Niobe with her children dead on the
porch of the pediment, beneath a scene between Eros and Psyche, and at the top
a bronze statue of Apollo. On the south side are Orpheus and Eurydice in the underworld.
In the north facade, Bacchus and Ariadne, both carved in stucco.

The original walls were covered in 1883 and 1884 grit. The interior was renovated between
1904 and 1905 by Felix Genzmer. During the Second World War burned and then rebuilt between
1979 and 1984, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Berlin. Between 1996 and 1999, after
German reunification, there were new jobs restoration

[ In the picture you can see the building in a photograph taken recently ]

A selection of works that have premiered at the theater are:

• 1799 - Die Piccolomini and Wallensteins Tod Friedrich Schiller (in the old National Theatre)
• 1802 - Die Kreuzfahrer of August von Kotzebue
• 1816 - the opera Undine E. T. A. Hoffmann

Moreover, the December 25, 1989, Leonard Bernstein performed the Symphony No. 9
whose fourth movement is since 1986 the anthem of the European Union.

The Gendarmenmarkt (the Gendarmes Market) is a square located in the ncenter of Berlin.
It is considered the most beautiful square in the city. The central building square is the
Konzerthaus.
