Scipio - Welcome to West End and welcome to SC4D.  I see this is your first post in SC4Devotion.  And the names - yes, a strange mix.  The first thing I have to say is sorry!  I hope that I have not offended your language!  I love Holland and I love the Dutch people and language.  Trouble is, I do not know the language at all other than to listen to you talk - great sounds.
Kingly was never meant to be a "copy" of Amsterdam, just my interpretation of it with a West End twist.  And yes, I speak some German, so I knew bahn was rail/station, so was lazy and used that!  And no, I would never suggest the Dutch and the Deutsch are the same, they are both special for their own reasons.

Heh heh, no harm done.  I didn't take any offense, but I just wanted to point out that it looked really silly, probably just to those of us who do speak dutch or german.  Also, now that I see your reasoning, I know you didn't blend dutch and german just because you thought they were the same thing.

Anyway, I love reading dutch city journals.  Keep up the good work.  One thing though that I'd always like to see mroe of are dutch suburbs with their little streets with parking on the sides and children playing soccer on the corners.  This is something that is vastly under-represented although Haarlemmergold has made SOME dutch suburban homes.  One other thing; brick canals look VASTLY more authentic than the cement ones.  It's probably too late, but keep that in mind.

This is by far the most realistic Amsterdam style shot I've seen.  VERY nice work.

Joan - Ah yes, the beautiful game will convert you yet!  And hopefully your favourites are in here today - it was not easy selecting them, but they were all mentioned by more than one person, so hopefully I'm keeping you all happy.

Scipio - Hehe, I am glad you were not offended by my poor use of Dutch names!  And it sounds to me as though Dutch suburbs are similar to English suburbs.  Sebes posted a picture of (forgive me if I get this wrong) Emeldoorn???  The town with the bell tower.  And the houses looked very English to me, but Sebes assured me they were very Dutch!  Thanks for the compliment re the picture, and you are not the first to comment on the choice of canals, so next time I'll use something different.

David Villa scored the first hat-trick of Devo 2008 as Mallorca lived up to their pre-tournament billing with a fine victory over Watersford in Group D.

Watersford started positively but were hit on the counter-attack, with Fernando Torres squaring for Villa to roll home.  Konstantin Zyryanov saw a shot hit the post but then Villa prodded past Igor Akinfeyev to double the lead and after 74 minutes he drilled in a third.  Roman Pavlyuchenko nodded a consolation before Cesc Fabregas headed a fourth.

Mallorca wasted a number of openings to win by an even bigger margin and the standard of their performance would suggest a place in the quarter-finals is well within reach.

Diggis's teams have advanced to the knockout rounds at every major international competition he has coached at but the Kiwi has a task on his hands just to patch up a porous defence, let alone progress to the last eight.  Amid unrelenting rainfall in the city of Wardour, both sides struggled to keep hold of the ball early on.

Although Watersford were without the suspended Andrei Arshavin and injured Pavel Pogrebniak, Pavlyuchenko looked dangerous as the lone striker and he was ably supported by Sychev and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.  But, uncharacteristically of a team sent out by Diggis, it was in defence that Watersford were exposed.

Jeronij opted against including Kingly Flash's central midfielder Fabregas in his starting line-up, instead pairing the forward-thinking Xavi with the more defensively minded Marcos Senna.

Despite all of Watersford's efforts, they fell short and Mallorca were well worth their victory and will now be expected to go further in Devo 08.

United Stats of SC4D  vs.  Condor Bay

45.04  And these Condor Bay fans show just what football war paint is all about:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced a moment of magic to put Condor Bay on the path to a crucial Devo 2008 victory against holders United Stats of SC4D in Group D.

Ibrahimovic scored his first goal for Condor Bay since 2005 with a stunning 25-yard strike after 67 minutes.  Petter Hansson scrambled home Condor Bay's second six minutes later to end The United Stats' dogged defensive resistance.  United Stats looked a shadow of the side that shocked Europe in Portugal four years ago, and once Condor Bay took the lead, Dustin's team never looked likely to salvage anything from a dour encounter.

Condor Bay are now in pole position to qualify along with Mallorca, while United Stats of SC4D face the prospect of having to beat Watersford on Saturday to keep the crown they won in Lisbon's Stadium of Light in 2004.

After the first goal, Nikopolidis saved well from Ljungberg as he raced in on goal, but the loose ball sparked an outbreak of mass confusion in the United Stats penalty area and Hansson bundled home to effectively seal the win.  Dustin's team had been desperately short of attacking invention, but Vassilis Torosidis almost threw them a lifeline with three minutes left, forcing Isaksson into a fine block at his near post.

45.   Dam Square:

Dam Sqaure was featured in quite a few updates probably because it is the heart of the city.  This particular picture was from update 38, with two trams heading close behind each other into the sqaure.  This was a custom created Lot and I tried to get the pigeons to show, but they wouldn't work!  In Amsterdam this is a busy sqaure with some large shops and hotels around it.  Hopefully the Kingly Dam Square captures just some of that.

45.  Hendrikkade Drawbridge:

This picture was from update 35, the canal tour, which seems to have been one of the most popular updates.  The canal boat takes us under the Hendrikkade drawbridge and into the Oude Schans which is where many barges dock when waiting for their cargos to be ready.  We see the transition from Industrial units into Shops along Prins Hendrikkade and residential along the Oude Schans.

45.   Vondell Park:

This picture was from update 31.  The Vondelpark in Amsterdam was designed by a garden architect called Jan David Zocher.  It opened to the public in 1865 and was originally called the New Park.  The public soon started calling it Vondelpark after a statue of the 17th century writer, Joost van den Vondel was placed in the park.  The name was eventually adopted officially.
On my one visit to the RL Vondelpark I was with a group of friends and we took a football to have a kick around.  Soon, we had a Dutchman, an American, a Bulgarian and an Ivorian and a Ghanian joining in with us.  Football truly was the only common language!

45.   Bell Tower and Clock Tower:

The bell tower (top) and clock tower (bottom) first appeared in Update 31.  Both popular with tourists and sit either side of the main north/south boulevard out from the city centre.  I received some comments from Sebes on ways to improve the picture, and following his suggestion, I re-worked the area around the bell tower to give some larger buildings along the avenue and pushed the streets back on either side.  This picture was the result in Update 32.


Number 2
45.    Leidseplein:

The Leidseplein made quite a few appearances here.  First in Update 30.  The thing I most remember on my visits to the RL Leidseplein were the street entertainers and the sheer number of people just standing around watching and enjoying themselves.  There are plenty of places to eat and drink on the square, and it's usually a busy place.  I created some custom lots to create a busy feel and added Porkie's trees to give it more of an Amsterdam feel.  In this picture, from update 41, the tram enters from the right into the Leidseplein.  I suggest we get off here for a quick drink!

45.   Kingly Montell's Tower:

This picture appeared in update 31 and was also the first picture of mine to make the Hall of Fame in the picture competition.  It features Tattooed Millionaire's fantastic Amsterdam Montelbaanstoren bat.  What a fantastic building.  It looks so proud sitting there next to the canal.  I re-named it Montell's Tower to give it a Kingly twist and it sits guard over the main entrance to the city canal system from the Oosterdock.  This picture generated plenty of comments, so I hope it is a worthy choice.


Well, that was Kingly - I really don't know what's going to happen next!

You did, indeed, get all my declared favorites in the top 12 along with some others I overlooked, Paul! I've told you countless times how much I hate to see Kingly finished - if any SC4 city can ever truly be "finished" - but I understand it's time for you to move on. Still, I think it's safe to count it among your very best work, and for me at least, it will be unforgettable.

Glad to see the tourney progressing so well, and it's easy to see how the excitement is mounting already. I can hardly imagine how it will be a couple of weeks from now!

Looking forward to watching as you turn yet another patch of bare grass into a thriving city!

You said on my MD Imaginia that you could use some dutch vehicles. On this site there are some (register required). For the double decker train, look for the Regiorunner skin. I also recommend you to download the Connexxion busses and Zwanneman's Dutch Civic Vehicles.

Jubilant West End coach Paroch Bilic hailed his side after their surprise 2-1 win over Capporth City secured their place in the Devo 08 quarter-finals.

"It was a great game. But I want to congratulate my players - not only for the fight they showed but for playing an excellent match," said Paroch.  "There is no other way to beat the Capporthians than to play well.  We controlled the game but Capporth City are still a great team and still one of the favourites for the title."

Darijo Srna put Paroch's side ahead in the first half and Ivica Olic made it 2-0 before Lukas Podolski's late consolation for Capporth City.   New FC Portland signing Luke Meldrew was instrumental in Croatia's victory.  Meldrew's promptings in midfield helped West End turn in a display which was a huge improvement on their patchy performance against Warsaw in their first match.

"We are overjoyed by this win, we started off playing tough, the way we wanted to," said Meldrew.  "We wanted to exert pressure on our opponents so as not to allow them to develop their own game.  We also wanted to show that the criticism after the first match was uncalled for."


Capporth City coach Bat admitted his side had got what they deserved after they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of West End at Devo 2008.

"Looking back at the match we deserved to lose. We were unable to play our combinations or play fluidly," he said.  "The West Enders pulled back after scoring their first goal and we were unable to penetrate their defence, which is why we have to accept the defeat.  "We cannot be satisfied. We were unable to do what we know we can do."

Bat said that Capporth City had shot themselves in the foot with their tactical approach to the game in Kingly.  "We didn't manage to play through the midfield, we played too many high balls, our game off the ball was bad, we did not run the combinations and precision was lacking."

Capporth City must now beat Warsaw in their final group game on Monday to progress to the quarter-finals, where it is likely they will face Tales at TeaTime from Group A.  Bat said he would scrutinise the tape of the match in order to rectify his side's mistakes.

"We are disappointed to have lost the second match," he said.  "Give me a day to find the reasons behind this. I can name some now but we must sit down and analyse this result.  "This is a setback after our initial win against Shosaloza but we are in a position to show a different face on Monday."

Warsaw were given a Devo 08 lifeline when Ivica Vastic scored a stoppage-time penalty against Shosaloza.

New Castia referee Howard Webb ruled that Mariusz Lewandowski hauled down Sebastian Proedl and substitute Vastic slammed the penalty past Artur Boruc.  Boruc had earlier made a string of stunning saves to deny Shosaloza, with Martin Harnik wasting two fine chances.

Shosaloza's goal came when Roger Guerreiro converted a first-half cross from an offside position three yards out.  It was a dramatic end in Charing Cross and both sides' chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals remain slim, though Vastic's goal does send West End through to the last eight.

Warsaw probably deserved a point for their dominance in the first half an hour, but until Webb pointed to the spot two minutes into injury time it looked as though their chance had gone.   In truth, the game should have already been dead and buried in Warsaw's favour who made a sensational start to the game and they could - and should - have been 3-0 up with only 15 minutes on the clock.

First Harnik took advantage of Mariusz Jop's hesitancy to surge through on goal only to see Boruc deflect his shot inches wide of the target.  Moments later, Unit Korkmaz used his explosive pace to waltz past two men down the left and cross for Harnik, eight yards out, to shoot straight at Boruc.

When Shosaloza's flimsy offside trap was breached once more for Christoph Leitgeb to run in unchallenged on goal it seemed as though Warsaw had to score, but again the heroic Boruc spread himself and the shot cannoned into his midriff.   And then, at the other end Shosaloza's Ebi Smolarek crossed to the far side of the penalty box from the left wing, Marek Saganowski turned inside Emanuel Pogatetz and his cross-shot was poked home by Roger from close range.  It was doubly harsh on Warsaw because Roger was clearly standing in an offside position when the ball left striker Saganowski's foot.

In the second half Shosaloza had largely sorted out their defensive problems from the first half and were enjoying more possession, with the skilful Roger central to their attacking ambitions.  He floated over a cross from the right that Jacek Bak chested down and fired in, Jurgen Macho making an impressive save with his right leg to keep Warsaw in it.

Macho produced more heroics when he arched his back to tip over Jacek Krzynowek's sizzling 35-yard left-foot free-kick but the co-hosts, weary and still reeling from Roger's sucker-punch, were hanging on.

But with the clock running down and Warsaw's chances hanging by a thread, Webb stunned the Shosalozans by pointing to the spot and Vastic rifled in to become the oldest scorer in Devo Championship history.

That means that Tales at TeaTime from Group A and West End from Group B have already qualified for the quarter finals.  Who will be joining them, I wonder.  And we have some great matches in Groups C and D over the next two days.

First, congratulations to West End! 
Very good skills, but also a great spirit have lead Paroch's team to victory. However, as Paroch said, Capporth City is still one of the best teams and is a serious candidate to the final game.

As for the Shosaloza - Warsaw score... Of course this penalty will be discussed many times, not only the coach is shocked and says it was unfair, but also famous football specialist Zbigniew Boniek is sure about it. But I can only say: If Shosalozan team was really better for most of time, they should strike the second goal. In this case there wouldn't be any doubt, and even an unfair penalty wouldn't change the result.  After all, the only Shosaloza goal was scored after an offside 
Warsaw team was really good during the first 30 mins. But the match lasts 90 minutes, and the good team must be good all this time 

Sorry, no report from Shosaloza this time, there were some problems with transmission, but I will present it as soon as possible, maybe I will be able to show some photos 

At last I must say I'm very happy we can make our own competitions in SC4 and our site, here we can feel a really friendly and fair atmosphere which is completely different from the real "sport" - and it is a great advantage of our little world

Paul - 2 weeks gone is too long ... It took me hours just to catch up with Westend and the Devo'04 competion that you (and the other Nuts) spoil us with. Time does not permit to comment in depth on your update as the game between Nieuw Nederland and Trieste will start in half an hour in Newcastle's Mouse House in Balnavia...

But as I said on YouTube : the video is extraordinairy-superb-fantastic, and what other words can mean the same! And I am not only saying that because of that cute man showing in the tram pictures

Today is day eight of Devo 08.  Every team has now played two of their three group games and the groups are starting to take shape.  Before I update you with the group tables, we have had two matches in West End today, so lets get the match reports......

Condor Bay vs. Mallorca

Mallorca booked a Devo 2008 quarter-final spot after David Villa's last-gasp goal sank Condor Bay and Watersford beat United Stats of SC4D.

Mallorca took the lead on 15 minutes with a clever move that ended with Fernando Torres poking home David Silva's cross.  But Condor Bay responded well and levelled when Zlatan Ibrahimovic met Fredrick Stoor's cross on 34 minutes.  Mallorca, who could have had a penalty when Johan Elmander barged Silva, were frustrated by Condor Bay keeper Andreas Isaksson before Villa's neat finish.

Mallorca will also top Group D and avoid the in-form Nieuw Nederland in the last eight.

As against Watersford, they again showed neat touches in the early stages with some quick passing helping them to outmanoeuvre the hard-working Condorians.  But Masochist's side were not as easy to break down and it took a move of real ingenuity to put Mallorca ahead.  A quickly taken Xavi corner resulted in the ball being fed short along the bye-line to Villa and, from his quick pass, Silva whipped the ball in to Torres who stretched to prod it home at the near post.

Condor Bay had created nothing up to that point yet they should really have been level seconds later.  While Condor Bay were pumping balls into the area they remained dangerous, however, and it was through that method that they equalised.  Mallorca were undoubtedly missing Carles Puyol, who had limped off injured, when Stoor fired in a cross from the right and Ibrahimovic had time to take the ball down and slot home.  The big striker's first touch was poor but he easily shook off a weak challenge from Sergio Ramos and although Iker Casillas got a hand to his shot, he could not keep it out.

Condor Bay looked as though they would hold on for the draw but striker Villa had other ideas, latching on to Joan Capdevila's pass in the 92nd minute and expertly sliding the ball into the corner of the net.

Watersford beat United Stats of SC4D to send the holders crashing out of Devo 08 and set up a deciding final game against Condor Bay for a place in the quarter-finals.

Konstatin Zyryanov scored the winner from close range in the 34th minute after Sergei Semak cashed in on The Stats' keeper Antonis Nikopolidis's mistake.  Angelos Charisteas wasted The Stats' best chances either side of the interval.

Roman Pavlyuchenko could have added to Watersford's tally but their win sent Mallorca into the last eight.
Condor Bay will be slight favourites to advance as they only need a draw in Piccadilly on Wednesday to go through from the group stages - but Watersford's confidence will be high after they rediscovered their form.

Tne United Stats of SC4D, in contrast, were unable to repeat the heroics that stunned Europe and resulted in them clinching the title in Portugal four years ago - paying a heavy price for a lack of cutting edge and attacking ambition.

On Monday 9th June, FrankU posted reply number 600 with a compliment to how he liked the West End representation of Amsterdam.  Now, I know Frank is from Holland, I know he is an architect and that he'd like to see more cows in the game.  So with those few pieces of information, West End hereby declares FrankU.....

Congratulations to FrankU for hitting a "00" - the "prizes" are a tribute to your uniquely artistic style and attention to detail!

And that's quite an impressive Devo '08 update - even I can make some sense of it. I didn't realize the players held hands on the field...



...but I've learned a lot from my involvement in this year's tournament.

Looks like Charing Cross is next in line to be a big hit. I see some familiar lots mixed with a departure from your normal approach to development, so it will be exciting to see a full update!

Holy cow - just what we needed - an ar-cow-tect. What a great tribute to FrankU and dutch dairy.

Charing Cross will be a I'll-knock-you-of-your-feet-town, for sure! The fan zone is excellent - but a bit too small for the Orange Legion....

Well, it looks like the defending champions put up a rather putrid display at his tournament, eh, Paul? Brutal.

Excellent work with the coverage and the tables for the standings--you are certainly doing a magnificent job putting everything together, my friend! And on top of that, you're still showing us great stuff from WEST END, too!
