I really like your highway system, and those shipping docks. Your Ghettos are very nice too, as I cannot make a good ghetto when I try to make one $%Grinno$%

Update time! Today we're going back to Hasbury Key to see how the South-East Hasbury Project has progressed as it nears completion, as well as new developments around the ruined Sea Fort. But before that, we have the replies:

Great to see you back. And what a huge update. Wow! But I enjoyed reading the descriptions. You are creating a very believable world.

Thanks Raphael. :) I do try to make my cities realistic, and It's good to know it's working. ;D ;D

Awesome work on the last couple updates and glad to see you back  &apls &apls  Your highways are fantastic and the oil port area looks perfect--I hope to borrow some ideas from that one. Keep it up

Thankyou, I'm pleased that you found inspiration from my Port areas. At first I thought putting tanks among the apartments was too unrealistic, but I decided to keep it that way because made it look unique. :) :)

Wow, big chunk to bite in. Railways are pretty decent in terms of realism. The nightlight pictures stand out, though. Very good.

Thanks, glad you liked my railways. ()stsfd() Unfortunately there aren't any nightshots in this update, but hopefully you'll still like the update. ;D

Glad you liked the highways, in this update we'll be seeing a new motorway junction. ;) Also, a good way to make ghetto areas is to alter taxes for residential so that only low-wealth residential will grow. Just make sure you have enough jobs available. ;)

Off we go to Hasbury Key...

(facing north) We start with the central part of the development, the Palmwater Mall. Even with the advanced construction technology available in the 2080's, the mall has been built in record time, thanks to extra staff and funds from Real Estate giant Palmacre, who are overseeing the management of the mall, as well as leasing out retail space. As you can see the entire development is still incomplete, as there are still new shops to be built, and the nearby Palm Acres development is still under construction.

(facing east) Henley Oaks, the first part of the S.E.H. project to be built is now completed and fully inhabited, and has helped with the never-ending demand for luxury housing in Barrierland. The building under construction will be a new state-of-the-art Medical Centre, and will be used mainly for treating serious diseases like Cancer, as well as having a bionic ward for augmentation upgrades, repair and the facilities to treat any augmentation-related illnesses, like Bionic Rejection Syndrome. The Centre is being built on the site of the old Blue Lagoon Fire Station. A newer, more modern facility has been built as part of the Palm Acres Development.

(facing west) In order to keep the smaller roads clear of the influx of traffic caused by the new housing as well as the inevitable shopping traffic around the Palmwater Mall, Junction 3A has been built. Although the traffic levels are relatively low at the moment, but the people behind the S.E.H. Project knew that other developers would come along and start building in the area, due to the appeal of the shopping mall and the unused but very desirable land along the beachfront. In the years to come it is almost certain that more developments will spring up in the area, and the Junction will be fully utilized.

(facing north) In a recent deal with the town authorities, BarryTech is building a brand new army base on the site of the old Hasbury Sea Fort, and will be appropriately named Fort Hasbury. But before the new base can be built, the land has to be cleared. Not only does this involves deforestation, but the ruins of the old fort have to be cleared, not to mention the swamp behind the fort, which has been made poisonous due to machinery from the old Fort. Specialist pumps will be needed for this, for which the crane in the top-left is preparing a foundation. The tetrapods that litter the area will also have to be removed, but their weight means that heavy-duty cranes will be required. The land is expected to be cleared by spring next year.

(facing west) In order to speed up the process, land clearing has begun on both sides of the Fort. The road that used to run through the area will be cut off, and will instead provide access to the new base. Although the road was only one of 4 roads from Hasbury to the east, it had very little traffic, and the new motorway junction will now handle the traffic.

(facing north) Not only will the new base be larger than BarryTech's current facility, but it will also include docks, for their patrol boats and transport vessels. The Empire prohibits corporate entities from owning warships and other large military vessels, and so BarryTech's fleet consists almost entirely of patrol boats and small gunboats. In order to provide shelter for the construction of the new docks, a temporary seawall made of prefabricated concrete blocks is being built. Ships from the Hasbury Dredging Company are being called in to aid in the construction of the seawall and the dock, as well as clearing all of the debris off the beach and in the surrounding waters.

(facing north) To finish off, another smaller project in the South Hasbury area. The large area of waste ground next to Junction 5 of the M105 is being cleared and drained in preparation of construction of a new train station for Horizonte, which will replace the small station currently in use. This new station's position on the Barrierland Mainline and its proximity to a motorway will make it a new rail hub for the Hasbury Area, and should encourage more growth in South Hasbury.

Well that's it for this update, next week I'll be showing you the swamps in North-West Kanalka City, as well as more of the dock areas. See you then! ;D ;D

At long last, here is a map of Deltania, showing its counties, major cities and motorways. I know it's a bit crude and lacking things like names of rivers and other natural landforms, as well as a scale bar, but I'll probably improve it at some point in the future. Click for full size. Replies will come with the next update.

Update time! Today we're going to take a tour around Kanalka Creek, Kanalka City's swamp, as well as have a quick look at the West Side Docks. While the swamp may be smaller than the extensive coastal swamps in the area, (Which we'll take a look at sometime in the future) there is still a lot to see in them, from the wildlife to the shacks built among the reeds. First though, the replies:

Well I wouldn't call Kanalka City a model city, what with all the crime, corruption and inequality, but I see what you mean with all the amenities the city has. Hasbury Key however, is much more of a model city to follow. :) :)

Thanks, glad you liked my map. ;D From my calculations (Assuming Alterra's equatorial circumference is 40,000km), the scale is correct at the equator. Deltania is the second-largest country on Alterra, so it's a huge country anyway. ;)

Thankyou. I tried to make my highways look realistic in that sense, as many major cities in the U.S., UK and elsewhere have large circular or semi-circular roads surrounding them, so I decided to recreate that for many of Deltania's cities.

Excellent map.  &apls Is all of this your SimCity region or did you add some fantasy parts?

The current Barrierland region I'm playing on is 100km west-east and 24km north-south, centered roughly on Kanalka City, so my SC4 region covers only a tiny part of this map. I do plan to do another city in Deltania sometime in the future, when I'm done with Kanalka City.

Now, who wants to go to the swamp?

(facing east) We start our tour on the eastern edge of the swamp, by the Sherman Jones memorial bridge. Built in 1946 and named after Kanalka City's Mayor at the time, the bridge as the main road between the docks to the north and the Naval Port to the south. Today it serves as a bypass route, so traffic stays off the smaller streets and out of the residential areas. It's also a favourite place for people to dump "illegitimate goods".

(facing north) On the south side of the swamp are numerous small islands, a rare haven for wildlife in Kanalka City, as well as a great place for drug labs, moonshine stills and crazy people to look for buried treasure. The only thing they're going to find buried in the swamp mud are dead mobsters, drug stashes and the occasional alligator.

(facing east) Swampside Drive is really just a small sandy track that leads down from the Sellafield Estates to Swamp Town. To the left you can see a small parking area, which is used mainly by campers who want to sleep outdoors near the swamp.

(facing east) Zooming out the entirety of Swamp Town comes into view. Built between 1902 and 1923, this small collection of shacks, docks and warehouses was built mainly by fisherman looking to exploit the large amount of crawfish in the swamps, but it also attracted hunters, artists looking for a quiet retreat, and swamp dwellers looking for better housing at a very cheap price. Although the crawfish industry has declined over the decades, Swamp Town is still bustling with activity, and today there are shops, offices, even a hotel here. Gangs take advantage of the spacious warehouses here to store their illegal goods, as well as interrogating their enemies.

(facing north) On the north side of the swamp is where the Kanalka City Pipeline emerges, transporting oil to the U.S.O. storage depot. The pipeline used to tasnport oil from 12 different platforms, but now the pipelines serve only two. As United Southern Oil continues to decline along with the demand for oil, lack of funds for maintenance means that as the pipelines deteriorated over the decades, oil has been slowly seeping out hence the dead trees around the pipes. For years people in Swamp Town have said that the noxious gases in the swamp are good for you, but in reality these people were probably just getting high off the fumes leaking from the pipeline.

(facing north) This small wooden house is the Kanalka City Nature Centre. Open to the public, it provides information about the swamp and its biodiversity, as well as guided tours in dinghies.

(facing north) Thieves Island was so named because of the smugglers that used to keep their loot there, away from prying eyes. It's not known exactly who lives in this shack, but there are many more shacks like this in the larger coastal swamps, inhabited by those who want to be away from the technology of the late 21st century, those who want a simpler life surrounded by nature, those who want to make moonshine away from the prying eyes of the law.

(facing west) The Creek Channel Bridge was the first of five bridges to be built across the channel, which connects the swamp to the rest of the sea. The bridge was completed in 1876, and has carried the Kanalka City Mainline ever since. To the right of the pic you can see a small residential area with prime access to the swamp, ideal homes for nature lovers.

(facing south) In this pic we can see the other four bridges that span the Creek Channel. On the left is the Westwood Bridge, which was built in 1956 to improve access to the West Side Docks, and today carries the K.C. Western Ring Road. The massive steel construction has made it a city landmark. On the right are the George Coxley Bridges. The central one was the first to be built in 1942, and the two one-way bridges on either side were built in the 1970's to help alleviate congestion. They are named after the main planner of Kanalka City's entertainment district to the south, which we'll see in a later update.

(facing east) Moving north of the creek channel we come to the West Side Docks. The docks are used by the Imperial Navy to store goods and repair their ships, like the Escort Ship H.M.S. Mercury, which is undergoing refurbishment and repainting. The Kanalka City Coastguard are also based here, which serves Kanalka City, Hasbury Key and other nearby towns, as well as providing support to the Navy when necessary.

(facing east) Here we can see where Naval Cargo is unloaded and stored. Only everyday, non-precious cargo is stored here like food and ammunition, while high-security cargo is stored directly at the Naval Harbour to the south.

(facing north) Here we can see one of Kanalka City's three remaining Oilfields, this one being the smallest. Like the others it's run by United Southern Oil, and is rapidly being exhausted. In the next few years it'll likely be cleared to make way for something else.

(facing west) Westside is a primarily industrial neighborhood, dotted with low-rent shops and offices as well as large apartment complexes built at various times during the first half of the 20th Century. Most of the residents work in the factories and offices, or in the nearby docks. The Solar facility is one of many that were built in the Southern Counties in the late 20th Century as a means of reducing fossil fuel consumption. Barrierland is an ideal place for Solar Power, as its equatorial location means that it receives plenty of sunshine, and less cloud cover than inland areas, further increasing solar output. While it still provides power, the Launceston Key Hydrogen Power Station now powers the majority of the city.

(facing north) A myriad of industries can be found in Westside, from high-tech pharmaceutical companies to foundries and refineries.

(facing west) To finish off, a night pic of Channel Ocho Studios, Deltania's primary Spanish Television Channel. Many of Deltania's Counties, particularly Eastland, Alcobend, Altipla, Buckland, Brentland and Barrierland have a large spanish-speaking community, most of which are descended from refugees who fled the neighboring country of Serberno Tikina during the Alterra War, and settled in the south-east counties and the coast. Channel Ocho was created in 1960, and has been broadcasting in 10 Deltan Counties ever since.

That's it for this update, next time we're going to Arena City, as well as taking a look at some of the surrounding residential neighborhoods. See you then! ;D ;D
