Update time! I know that I said I was going to post this on friday, but I was waiting until there was enough replies so that this update would post on another page. That way page 6 doesn't get completely overloaded with images. Also I've been trying to sort out a phantom slider bug in one of the K.C. squares I was working on. Fortuanately it's still in the planning stages, so I'll just obliterate the city and start again with little loss.

So today we're visiting Ethnictown, the centre of Kanalka City's asian-descent communities, as well as the headquarters of the Deltan Chapter of the Triads, as well as a gang of cyberpunk hackers known as the Kiminari. However, it isn't all drugs, guns and gang warfare. Ethnictown is the best place in Barrierland to find exotic goods, and its bars and adult entertainment facilities are renowned all over K.C. The city's thriving industries and role as a major port has meant that it has been one of the main places in Deltania to receive immigrants. Now for the replies:

Awesome job on the last couple updates  &apls &apls

Did you make those brilliantly-lit seawalls at the end of the last update yourself? I'm also really curious to see more of the interchange from the most recent update. Great bat selection, transport, and storyline again

Thanks Noah. ;D Those Seawalls are actually Colyn's CSX WFK - Spindrift Quays. I agree they're beautifully lit at night. :) We'll also have a look at part of the major interchange that you saw a glimpse of in the last update. ;)

Love those street names

Cheers! Like I said before, I try to retain a British feel to my cities with the place and street names, to reflect the significant British legacy left behind in Deltania. :)

Time to go to Ethnictown...

(facing north) In the south-east corner of Ethnictown is the Market Building. Built in 1933, at the time the building was the second largest building in K.C. by footprint, after the Quicksilver Motors Factory. (Now demolished) The building hosts literally hundreds of shops and stalls hosting a myriad of products, representative of the diversity of the neighborhood. You can find everything here, from traditional Cuisine to Genuine Fake Designer Brands. Opposite is a smaller market building built in 1968, specialising in electronics.

(facing east) At the southern end of Bailey Road, one of Ethnictown's two main throughfares is Bailey Court. Here you can find low-wealth tenements, built between 1940 and 1955. This is where many of the immigrants that move to K.C. to experience the city's glitz and glamour end up. Still, there's a chance for them to make it to the top by joining up with the Triads or the Kiminari.

(facing north) In the heart of Ethnictown is the [Picture This] Art Gallery. It was built in 2030 and opened a year later. While it's by no means one of Deltania's biggest or most famous Art Galleries, it is famous in K.C., as well as its surrounding areas. It hosts various works of Art from around the city, with a particular emphasis on the works of Ethnictown Artists. The work of K.C.'s current greatest artists can be found here.

(facing west) The most luxurious hotel on the West Side of the Harbour is the Ethnictown Palace. Built in 2013, the Palace consits of a Triad-run Casino, as well as an oriental-themed 5-star hotel. The Casino is ones of the main sources of revenue for the K.C. Triads. Only the wealthiest residents in the city are allowed access to the casino, unlike the majority of K.C.'s Casinos. Despite the galmourous appearance of the Palace, it is a hive of criminal activity, which is kept going by a few undisclosed payments to the K.C. Police Department.

(facing north) Kanalka City is famous in the architectural world for producing some unique buildings for their time. A prime example of this is the Kamurocho Building. Built in 1976 by a young foreign architect and designed with the future in mind, it consisted of modular blocks attached to two solid towers. Although back then it was an impressive example of possible future architectural styles, it eventually fell into disrepair in the 1990's when the depression took hold. Although it was rennovated in 2014, only the bottom two floors were used, and the pods remained empty. In 2037 it was abandoned again, at which point it was taken over by the Kiminari, and has been used as their headquarters ever since.

(facing east) Further north from the Kamurocho Building along Bailey Street are numerous apartments to house the thousands of low-wage workers living in Ethnictown. The large white and red building was originally built in 1929, and was the largest apartment building in Barrierland at the time. Although in most Deltan Cities the squalid conditions in this building meant that it would have been demolished long ago, sometimes in the late 20th Century. But numerous "rennovations" thanks to the Triads means that this building still stands, as a constant reminder to the persistant and squalid standards of living many people in K.C. Still Endure. The other apartments surrounding it were built later on in the 1960's. While they're still pretty horrible to live in, their conditions are still a great improvement.

(facing west) One of Ethnictown's more upscale areas is Jade Garden. Situated between the western waterfront of Downtown K.C. and the high-rises dominating the rest of the neighborhood, The apartments here are spacious and pleasant. Usually the higher ranking members of the Triads and Kiminari live here. The largest building in the pic used to be hotel, and was the hotel of choice for many foreign politicians when they visited the city. The Hotel was converted into apartments in 1995.

(facing east) The Lotus Tower is where Ethnictown's Elite live. Built in 2025, the tower is relatively minimalist in design, but inside are some of the best apartments the west side has to offer. The top three floors are the residence of the leader of the K.C. Triads. The Tower is also believed to be their headquarters. Next to it is the smaller, less luxurious apartment building known as the Bailey Tower.

(facing north) Heading further north the Ethnictown Commerce Building comes into view. Built in 1995 in the heart of the depression in order to provide low-cost office space to try to encourage foreign investment, at the time the building just provided a shelter for drug dealers, the homeless, seedy shops and other filth. It wasn't until around 2020 that the building started to fill up with foreign companies looking to get a cheap foothold in Kanalka City. The Building sits on its own podium, in which a mall was openend in 2018.

(facing south) North Ethnictown looks much like any other middle-class or upper-class neighborhood in central K.C., the only thing setting it apart being the ethnic diversity of the residents and the businesses. Only the wealthiest gang members and businessmen can afford to live in this part of Ethnictown.

(facing south) Jumping back now to the southern end of Ethnictown. This roundabout interchange is the official border Ethnictown and Perivale Green. Here Great Western Street (The TLA-7 running through Ethnictown) Meets The Southern Expressway where its elevated section ends, just before its interchange at Junction 2 of the M169, Kanalka City's main Motorway and only road link to mainland Deltania. Originally the Perivale-Ethnictown Interchange was a simple roundabout, but the underpass was built for Great Western Street in 2010 to deal with rising traffic levels. Despite this underpass the interchange is one of the city's congestion blackspots during peak times, mainly because it's right next to a busy junction with the M169, Barrierland's busiest road.

(facing west) Here we have Kowloon House, one of many of Ethnictown's low-wealth apartment buildings and built in 1954. Next to it is Lappers, one of hundreds of strip clubs and adult dance clubs to be found in Kanalka City.

(facing west) Another nighshot, this time of Macau Apartments. This is one of the most affordable places in North Ethnictown, although rents are still high. The ground floor is occupied by retail, and floors 2-6 are occupied by offices. The building also has two large advertising spaces that are surprisingly cheap. Currently advertised is Cockatoo Ridge Wine, one of the finest brands Deltania has to offer, as well as the new Squash PMX-5010, with improved Cranial Augmentation Compatibility. This is 2082 after all...

Well that does it for this update, as always don't forget to leave a reply. Constructive criticism is also encouraged. The next update will most likely be on thursday, if not friday. The next update will be about Marina Gardens, the wealthiest and most expensive part of K.C., where all the corrupt politicians, movie stars and organized crime bosses live. See you then! ;D ;D

Time for update 15! Today we're leaving the depths of depravity and taking a tour of Marina Gardens, by far the wealthiest part of Kanalka City. It's here that all the movie stars, politicians and Organized Crime Bosses live, as well as being home to some of the most expensive shops and boutiques in the country. Bound by water on three sides, many houses have spectacular views of the harbour and the ocean, and some of the more expensive houses have exclusive beachfront access, which is one of the main reasons this neighborhood is so expensive. Another reason is that Marina Gardens is right next to the excitement and nightlife of Downtown K.C. The neighborhood derives its name from Kanalka City Marina, which is located on the south shores of Marina Gardens. Before we start the tour though, we have the replies...

Absolutely awesome. I cannot get enough of this MD  &apls

Well that's good to hear, because there's plenty more in this update. ;D ;D

Now let's move on to the pics...

(facing north) We start our tour of Marina Gardens from wher it meets Downtown K.C., on Central Avenue. This is the main road that serves the north side, and handles a large portion of traffic in Downtown K.C. Central Avenue continues west for almost three miles, and terminates near the industrial docks. Along the road are some of the most prestigious businesses and apartments in Marina Gardens. You can also see the Northern Ferry Dock, one of 2 docks to serve the harbour, the other being in the City Centre. Although the ferries used to carry vehicles, today the ferries only carry pedestrians.

(facing north) Further along Central Avenue are numerous ritzy aparrment buildings, with excellent waterfront views, and instant access to the Marina so the residents can store their fancy yachts. At this point I've realised that I've called the same road two different names. In future updates the road will be known as Central Avenue. Marina Boulevard sounds a bit too fancy, considering this road runs through some pretty run-down areas that we'll see in future updates. The large white apartments to the right are the Lincoln Apartments, built in 2013. Currently these apartments are the cheapest in Marina Gardens, but are still very expensive. Many of the residents here are staff working at the mansions surrounding the apartments.

(facing east) In the north-west corner of Marina Gardens is Kanalka City's busiest station. Built in 1868, Lincoln Station directly serves downtown K.C., and is only a ten-minute walk from Central Park, heart of the old downtown. A western extension to the downtown line was built in 1934, to service the west side of Downtown. An addition was built to the Downtown Junction of the M169, to make access to Marina Gardens easier, and to ease congestion on the other parts of Kanalka City. Opposite the station is the Celestia Tower, the tallest residential building in Marina Gardens.

(facing south) The northwestern part of Marina Gardens is where many of the large office buildings are. Also in this part of the neighborhood are many of the older high-end shops, nestled in between the offices. The large blue building in the pic is the R&D facility of a major robotics company. The older building next to it is the Brentland Offices of Wesfield Bank, and was built in 1924, which made it the tallest building in the neighborhood at the time. K.C. probably isn't the best place to have a Brentland Office though, considering the fact that Barrierland may soon break away to form its own county.

(facing south) Lincoln Road is the main throughafare for the northern part of Marina Gardens, and derives its name from Lincoln Station. Many large mansions are found here, and apart from the small gardens, the busy road is the only downside about living here. The people who live here most likely did terrible things to be able to afford one of these houses. Either that, or the people that provided the houses for them did terrible things to get them.

(facing west) Further along Lincoln Road is the Marina Gardens Metro Station. It's a major interchange station on the K.C. Metro System. The two lines on the left continue on towards Downtown, and roguhly follows the Harbour Waterfront along the Inner Circle Line. The two lines to the right serve the Outer Circle Line, which runs right around the outer parts of the city. Between Marina Gardens and Brent Street Station the line runs parallel with the Inner Circle Line. Further west the Outer Cicle deviates, one line continuing west, the other heading north, heading towards Delta City across Kanalka Bay. This inter-city subway connection was built in 2034.

(facing east) Moving further along Lincoln Road we come to yet more luxury boutiques and fancy resteraunts and cafes. The large building in the pic is the Kennedy Dinner Theatre, one of the best in the city. Here you can also see the railway line making its way south towards Brockencyde and the City Centre.

(facing east) Going further south we come to the intersection between Lincoln Road and Central Avenue. To the right is the Fox Head Pub, home to K.C.'s Finest Ale, and hangout of all the rich snobs of Marina Gardens. It opened for business in 2010, after the original pub closed down and moved away. Across the level crossing are the biggest and most expensive houses in the city.

(facing east) Large Mansions overlooking the Marina can be found at the southern end of Lincoln Road. Also in the pic is Club Goober, one of the most exclusive nighclubs in the city, as well as the Marina Gardens Cemetery, which offers the finest plots to those who want their dearly departed to rest in luxury as well as peace. Other shops found here include the SPACE Furniture showroom, a Modac Luxury Electronics Store and a branch of Barrierland Standard Insurance.

(facing east) Along Escobar Road you'll find the finest mansions this city has to offer. On this road lives the mayor, who occupies the Orange Mansion. The huge yellow and brown mansion to the left is the home of John Whiteford, owner of United Southern Oil, the Empire's biggest oil company, which has its headquarters in Downtown K.C. The Mansion on the right is currently occupied by Judge Hillwood, who is supposed to provide justice for the citizens of this city, but he works closely with the organized crime bosses, and is as crooked as a judge can get. The mansions on the other side may be smaller and less luxurious, but as a compromise they have their own beach access complete with a small wooden pier for boats.

(facing north) Further up Escobar Road we come to some more beachside mansions, which are somewhat smaller but still pretty big nonetheless. Looks like the owner of one of these mansions went a bit overboard with the trees though, let's hope they don't damage the foundations. At the end of the road is Knoxville supercar and limo hire, which provides cars of luxury to anyone with enough money. They also have a couple of party buses available for rent, should a limosine be a bit too small. Next to it is Fotherington's Toy Shop, and across the road is Kelly's Escort Service, which has been faithfully serving the businessmen of Kanalka City since 1987.

(facing west) The Lincoln Tunnel carries the city's main railway line underneath the M169 and the industrial areas just north of Downtown. The railway line re-emerges about a mile west, near the port. Construction of the tunnel started in 1964, a few years before the Downtown section of the M169 was due to start construction, and was completed 3 years later. Had the tunnel not been built, parts of the M169 would have had to be elevated or sunken, or even slightly re-routed, which would have proven to be very expensive.

(facing west) Here we have one of the biggest luxury estates in the Barrier Islands. This is the home of Ignacio de Santa V, Boss of the De Santa crime family since 2045. The De Santa family originates from the nation of Serberno Tikina, a large Catalan-speaking country to the east of Deltania. The family moved to Kanalka City in 1979 when the Serberno Government started a major crackdown on organized crime, at which point the De Santa family was nearly destroyed. By the start of the 21st century they were the most powerful organized crime family in the city, and had control over many of the neighborhoods. Ignacio de Santa has also been the CEO of Palmacre Developments, the company responsible for the relentless gentrification of the city, the company that owns many of the large apartment blocks and luxury offices throughout Kanalka City, Hasbury Key and many other parts of the country. Ignacio de Santa also has close ties with United Southern Oil and the city government, and is easily the most powerful and influential man in the city. Although he isn't the mayor of Kanalka City, he controls much of what happens in the city. He has huge businesses, city government and hundreds of gang members at his disposal, and his organization has enough firepower to take over a small country. Ignacio de Santa isn't just a Crime Boss, he's a Crime King, and K.C. is his Kingdom.

(facing west) Jumping to the other side of Marina Gardens we come to the Kanalka Arms Hotel, the most luxurious in the city. Originally built in 1949, the Hotel was one of many buildings constructed in K.C. that was unique for its day. Unfortunately, the Hotel is famous for something else other than its unique architecture. In the Summer of 1951, the hotel suffered from immense damage to the 14th floor, (third one from the top) when a bomb was detonated in a conference room. A few minutes later two cars sped out of the underground car park, followed by another. A high-speed chase occured, accompanied with gunfire, as the cars made their way through downtown K.C. The shooting stopped a few blocks away, when the occupants of the first two cars had been shot dead. The estimated number of deaths from the incident was around 50. It was believed the incident was part of a vicious gang war between two major crime families. (both of which are now long gone)

(facing east) To finish this update, a night shot of the Marina Tower, currently under construction. This tower is being built by Palmacre, and will become the headquarters of the De Santa Crime Family when finished. It will be clad completely in blue-tinted glass, and will be the tallest building in Marina Gardens when finished. It is expected to be finished by the end of this year, the current year in Alterra being 2082.

Well that's it for this update, I hope you enjoyed it, as always comments and constructive criticism is always welcome. Next time we'll be taking the first look at Downtown K.C., and see some of the big companies that are based in Kanalka City. The update will either be on monday or tuesday, so stay tuned! ;D ;D

Awesome work on the last couple updates  &apls   I do like the way you've arranged the roundabout interchange and it's nice seeing more of it. Both the poorer areas and richer areas are very nice. My only complaint is that those walls seem a bit out of place in a rich neighborhood--perhaps some nice trees would give it a wealthier feel.

Thanks for the link as well!

Here comes update 16! Today is part one of our Downtown tour. Today we're visiting the Old Downtown, the original core of Downtown K.C., where most of the older buildings can be found. This part of Kanalka City was built mainly around the early 1800's, when the area served as the main port for the city. As ships got bigger and bigger, by the start of the 20th Century the harbour was no longer adequate as a port, and so construction started on a bigger port further north. It was around the 1910's that the area started to become the city's Downtown, with growth encouraged by the Brockencyde Bridge.

Today the old Downtown is beyond recognition, with ultra-modern skyscrapers fighting for space and skyline with the numerous historic buildings, and luxury shops and boutiques standing side-by-side with the offices of the numerous major companies that are based in Kanalka City. There are still a few reminders of the original industrial areas in the converted warehouses and the extensive waterfront surrounding the Downtown area. Before we start the tour though, I have the replies:

Hi Noah, thanks for your reply. Yes I'll admit that those walls seem a bit too industrial to be in a neighborhood like Marina Gardens, the main reason I chose them is because those are the walls I used all around my harbour area, and plus it makes the walls look quite old and weathered, which they're supposed to be. ;) I'm pleased you liked my rich and poor neighborhoods, I try to make them as different and distinct as possible. :)

Now, lets go to Downtown K.C....

(facing east) We start our tour in Central Park, which is co-incidentally located in the centre of the old Downtown. Numerous skyscrapers surround Central Park, which you'll see further on in the update. The Park was opened in 1898, as the focal point for the construction of the (then) new Downtown area. The park is a very popular meeitng place for all the businesspeople to discuss business things, as well as tourists wishing to gaze up at some of the taller skyscrapers in the old Downtown.

(facing east) On the western edge of the Old Downtown is Barrierland's biggest hospital - Saint Anne's. Completed in 1962, this hospital is the city's main hospital, and has one of the country's largest A&E centres, to deal with the high number of injuries that comes with the high crime rate in K.C. Stabbings, Shootings, Drug overdose, you name it, this hospital has seen it. The hospital also gives classes and on-the-job training for K.C.U. Medical Students. St. Anne's recently got a major rennovation, meaning that the hospital is once again equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and can now deal with augmentation-related injuries and ailments, as well as emergency augmentations to those who have suffered particularly horrific injuries.

(facing north) To the left of the Brockencyde Bridge Northern Approach is the Francis Building. Built in 1932, the building consists mostly of luxury apartments. However, at the bottom is a large ballroom and conference centre, which is often used for major business presentations, as well as playing host to political meetings and the occasional organized crime meeting. This is one of the most luxurious buildings in Downtown K.C..

(facing west) On the other side of the Bridge Approach is Moresby Dock, a lower-rise area where many of the original warehouse buildings can be found. Today they have been converted into offices or luxury apartments, their waterside location making them highly desireable properties.

(facing north) Moving slightly south we come to Bridgeside Park. Created in 1945, the park is built on two blocks that were destroyed in a bombing raid during the Alterra War. Because demand for real estate in Kanalka City was low during the Alterra War, the area was just converted into greenspace, a decision which is still greatly appreciated today, especially for photographers who want a close up of the Brockencyde Bridge. Along the park's waterfront are numerous shops and stalls, as well as boat rides and binouculars to look across the harbour towards the City Centre.

(facing east) On the south-west corner of the Old Downtown lies the Provincial Building. Originally built in 1939 as the Headquarters of the Royal Provincial Bank, the building was converted into low-cost apartments during the depression of the 1990's, when R.P.B. collapsed. In 2034 the building was bought by Palmacre and was converted into luxury apartments. Behind it is a converted warehouse which now houses numerous small firms.

(facing east) Now we come to the Patterson Building, named after the first mayor of K.C., Joseph Patterson. This building houses the government offices for this part of the county of Brentland. Currently, Kanalka City and the western third of Barrierland are part of Brentland. Each of Deltania's 52 counties are split up into districts, and the part of Barrierland that lies within Brentland is known simply as Barrier District, with K.C. being the district centre. Should Barrierland acheive its countyhood in the upcoming campaign, then the Patterson Building will be the headquarters of the county government. The building was completed in 1915, and was built on the site of a toilet factory. Now there aren't many government buildings that can share that claim to fame.

(facing west) On the northern edge of Downtown is the North Side Tunnel. When it was completed in 1920, it was the first direct connection between Downtown and the northern industrial areas, making trips to the docks quicker and easier, and keeping traffic off the smaller roads. When the first section of the M169 was completed in 1970, many smaller roads were demolished to make way, and so traffic levels in the tunnel increased. Despite this, the tunnel has coped throughout the years, even if it does get busy during rush hour. The southern portal's ornate design is a stark contrast compared to the northern portal's dull, plain design.

(facing south) A raised embankment between the Old Downtown and Junction 7 of the M169 carries the Downtown Spur, a short extension built in 1934 to help reduce crowding on Lincoln Road as numerous pedestrians and taxis drive down the road into Downtown from Lincoln Station. The spur runs for about a mile from Lincoln Station to North Downtown Station. Although there is less crowding at Lincoln Station and Lincoln Road, the spur itself is also somewhat crowded, and the small station built at the end may soon need replacing.

(facing south) Hidden amongst the skyscrapers is the K.C. Central Fire Station. Built in 1904, the building has been in constant use by the Kanalka City Fire Service ever since. The vehicles and crew of the station have special equipment to deal with fires in high-rise buildings, given their coverage area is most of Downtown K.C..

(facing west) Just outside the Old Downtown is Kanalka City's Central Police Station, and the Police Headquarters for Barrier District. This luxurious building, built in 2027 was apparently funded by numerous crime families who were based in or had major operations in the city, as a gift to the cops for perpetually looking the other way, as well as an incentive for them to keep doing so. The building features all the luxuries a crooked cop could need, as well as parking for the hundred or so police cars the station uses. Due to the high crime in this city, there are A LOT of police cars and officers.

(facing north) On the north side of Central Park is one of the icons of Kanalka City - the Harrisburg Tower. Built in 1922, for 11 months it was the tallest building in the world, until the Barthlet Tower was completed in Delta City. It remained the tallest building in K.C. until the West Quay Tower, known today as the U.S.O. Building was completed in 1979. It was originally the headquarters of the Quicksilver Motor Company, which at the time was the biggest car manufacturer in the country, based in K.C. since it was founded in 1899. While the company struggled through the Alterra War, it became prosperous again with the production of the Windsor Model, which proved incredibly popular, and quickly became known as the K.C. Car. The company started to go into decline in the 1970's as it started to lose out to Patriot Motors. By 1985 the company was on the verge of collapse, at which point Quicksilver abandoned the building. The building stood vacant for nearly 6 years, until the city government decided to convert the building into a mixed-use building, with ground-floor retail, the 6 floors above being offices, and the rest being mid-wealth apartments. The Quicksilver Motor Company still survives today, but it is only a fragment of what it once was.

(facing east) On the east side of Central Park is the tallest building in the Old Downtown - The Messenger Building. Built in 2009, this tower is the headquarters of Messenger, Deltania's biggest advertising company, and have a virtual monopoly on Kanalka City's advertising industry. they're responsible for the numerous billboards found around the city. The company was founded in 1994, to provide cheap advertising to companies trying to get more business in the heart of the depression. From these small foundations grew an advertising giant. The building is famous for the giant advertisments that are shown on the smooth glass surface on the corner of the building that change every month. The current advertisment is for Palmacre Developments, on how they're shaping the city for the better. Apparently.

(facing east) In the Old Downtown's north-eastern corner are its second and fourth tallest buildings. On the left is the Regatta Tower, the tallest of the two. Built in 2057, it's one of the newest high-rises in Kanalka City, and houses numerous luxury apartments. To the right is the AMP Building. Built in 1992, this building became the tallest building in the Old Downtown when completed, and housed the headquarters of Arlington Metal Production, a major Deltan Steel Company. Although it's headquarters moved to St. Leonard City in 2003, the company still occupies the top half of the building, the rest being let out to mid-wealth tenants.

(facing south) Finally, the fourth nightshot, the Aurora Building. This is the headquarters of the Aurora Business Group, the owners of numerous online web hosting sites, search engines and other popular websites, as well as film studios, broadcasters and e-book publishers. The building was built in 2014, and sits on the south side of Central Park. In 2062 a giant advertising board was added, which has been used by Erskibb ever since. Erskibb is a very popular brand of lager in the Deltan Empire, and because of this giant advertisement the building is more often known as the "Erskibb Building". Behind the Aurora Building is the Herald Sun Building, built in 2018 and home to the second largest newspaper in Kanalka City, after the K.C. Times.

Well that does it for this update, as always don't forget to leave a reply. Next time we'll be visiting the New Downtown, where Kanalka City's "Big 4" are based. See you then! ;D ;D

I love downtowns and I have to say your downtown is just gorgeous. It is obvious that you really care for your city/MD, just the awesome detail in your descriptions and the work you seem to put into your areas. I am telling you, this has got to be my favorite MD. Everything seems just so organized to me. Anyway, love that bridge-side park and the tunnel portal. Absolutely wonderful  &apls

Okay, I've been waiting until I can post this on the next page, (just so there isn't loads of pictures on one page) but I'm off on holiday tomorrow for a week so here's the update now. Today we'll be visiting the newer part of Downtown K.C., where giant companies and supertall skyscrapers can be found, as well as the most expensive real estate in the city. Most of the existing skyscrapers were built in the late 20th and early 21st century, but there are still some of the original buildings, mainly on the edges of the area though. Kanalka City's "Big 4", the four largest companies in the city have their headquarters here. These companies are the main controlling influence on city government and commerce, and have billions of pounds in assets in the city. Before we go there though, here are the replies:

Thanks, I'm honoured that my MD is your favourite. I'm pleased you liked Bridgeside Park, and we'll be seeing what's at the other end of the tunnel a few updates from now. ;)

Cheers! If you wanted to own one of those mansions, you would need a LOT of money and probably some mob connections. ;)

Thanks! I'm pleased you like it. ()stsfd()

Now let's go Downtown...

(facing north) On the edge of New Downtown, overlooking the Old Downtown is the headquarters of fast food giant Cecil Burger, one of the Big 4. Established in Kanalka City in 1905, the franchise has gone from strength to strength, and in the 2040's became the largest fast food chain in the Empire, with resturaunts in every country, and an annual profit of several billion pounds, and several promotions going all the time. The latest craze at Cecil Burger is the Cecil Tower, 4 half pounders in one bun. Pure Genius. Cecil Burger is probably the least corrupt of the Big 4, but they aren't completely innocent. There have been instances where animal rights protests and union strikes have been broken up with mob muscle, and sometimes even hired mercenaries. But this is K.C., big businesses are untouchable here. The building itself was constructed for the company in 2021, as they had outgrown their old Headquarters. Out of the Big 4 HQ's, this one is the smallest by height.

(facing south) In the north-east corner of New Downtown is Outlook Hill. What was once a small, grassy hill, was flattened in 1884 to create more space for industries. Eventually the industrial areas were cleared to make way for the expanding downtown, and so apartments were built. However, these were demolished in the 1980's and a car park was built, which still stands today. While the hill may be long gone, the neighborhood kept the name.

(facing south) One of K.C.'s larger apartment complexes, the Three Kings Complex was built in 2034 to provide "affordable" downtown housing. The Apartments are probably the wealthiest apartments of this size in the city, and are popular with middle-class businessmen and small families. They provide spectacular views over the harbour to the south, and the grimy industrial port areas to the north.

(facing west) Built on a small rectangular area of land jutting into the harbour, Northkey is mostly residential, and was once occupied mostly by warehouses, before the port was moved out of the harbour in the 1910's. Today, some of the finest apartments in Downtown K.C. can be found here.

(facing east) Further south more high-end apartments come into view. At the bottom of the pic you can see a small green built for the high-wealth residents.

(facing east) Here is the headquarters of the largest of the Big 4 - Palmacre. The company was founded in 1885, as a company to oversee the development of high-end apartments and stately homes around Kanalka City, as well as providing ample if not apalling accommodation to the poorer residents of the city, which hasn't changed much over the last couple of centuries. The company experienced exponential growth during Kanalka City's heyday during the 60's and 70's when the city's desirable seaside location and reputation for leniant law enforcement and significant corporate freedom meant that new buildings were springing up everywhere, and Palmacre was there to manage it all. It is estimated that Palmacre owns approximately 35% of the housing in the city, as well as 25% of the office space. This means that Palmacre make hundreds of millions just from Kanalka City, let alone the thousands of properties they own along the Deltan Coast and elsewhere. Today they are one of the largest development companies in the enitre Empire. The building itself is a gigantic structure, and was built in 2005. Today it's the second tallest building in the city.

(facing south) In the heart of the New Downtown is the K.C. Bank Tower. As its name suggests, this is the head office of the Bank of Kanalka City, a relatively small bank that operates solely in Barrierland. The unique design of the building makes it stand out from the rest, even if it has relatively little impact on the skyline. It was built in 1997, and originally housed an insurance company that went bust in 2058. Since then the Bank of Kanalka City has used it as their main office.

(facing west) On the northern side of New Downtown is the headquarters of the Titan Business Group. Created in 2029 with the merger of the Prometheus Casino Group and Kronos Entertainment Group, T.B.G. runs most of the casinos and luxury hotels in the city, as well as numerous bars and clubs, some of which are world-renowned. T.B.G. also controls many of Deltania's largest and most famous casinos, as well as some in other parts of the Empire. This means that the company is worth tens of billions, and is a power player in the Kanalka City Corporate sector. It's massive headquarters building was constructed after the merger, and was completed in 2034. Next to it is the smaller but still impressive Lincoln Tower, named after it's pretigious location on Lincoln Road. Most of the apartments are for the higher-ups who work for T.B.G. It was built in 2040. Behind the two towers is the Downtown High School.

(facing east) This is the North Downtown Station. Opened in 1934 after the completion of the Downtown Spur, The station was originally built to help alleviate some of the crowding at Lincoln Station, but the small station didn't make much of a difference. Soon a larger station will be needed in order to help handle the thousands of people who use this 2-platform station every day. Surrounding the station are numerous ritzy midrises, their close location to the station making them very desirable.

(facing north) Near the intersection between Sheldon Avenue and Central Avenue is the North Downtown Metro Station. The original outdated station was demolished in 2056, and the current entrance was built. This station is the third busiest in the city after the Lincoln Road and Central Park Stations. The station lies on the K.C. Metro Inner Circle line.

(facing east) Nestled between the shiny skyscrapers is something of a hidden gem in Kanalka City - the Museum of Modern Literature. While Kanalka City doesn't seem like the most cultured place in Deltania, (unless you think gang violence and adult entertainment is "cultural", in that case Kanalka City is an X-Rated Paris) but some of K.C.'s works of writing are some of the country's greatest, but are still nowhere near as famous as its film industry. Despite the city that it resides in, the Museum has some of the finest works of 19th and 20th Century Literature from Kanalka City and elsewhere in Brentland and the Barrier Islands. It was built in 2003.

(facing north) And now we come to the last of the Big 4, United Southern Oil. This company is a relic of a bygone age of Oil exploration, Petrol Stations, and Greenhouse Gasses, a time when companies like this were the most powerful corporate entities in the world. Since the worldwide implementation of Hydroenergy began in the early 2010's, demand for oil has steadily decreased, as cars, homes, even entire cities run on the clean energy provided by Hydrosphere technology. The only oil companies could hope to survive was either diversify their industries, become nationalised, or merge with other oil companies. U.S.O. was created in 2060 in a merger between Royal Brentland Oil and the Carver Oil Company. Today it is one of only 2 oil companies left in Deltania, and one of 8 remaining in the Empire. This is the largest of all, but its future is still uncertain. With Barrierland's Oil supplies dwindling and oil prices barely justifying production, U.S.O.'s profits slowly fall, as does its power in K.C. It's a dying Giant, one that failed to modernise in a rapidly changing world. The buillding itself was built in 1979, and became the headquarters of U.S.O. in 2062.

(facing north) On the north side of New Downtown are numerous mid-to-high wealth offices along Lincoln Road. A myriad of businesses can be found along here, along one of the most expensive roads in the city. Behind the office buildings are some small apartments for those with money.

(facing east) Further along Lincoln Road, near the North-West Corner of Downtown K.C. is the Martin Samson Building. It was completed in 2016 as the headquarters for Barrierland Standard Insurance, and is named after the founder of the company. B.S.I. was founded in 1922, and experienced much growth in the second half of the 20th Century as the crime rate started to rise and their premiums went with it. Today, B.S.I. is the second largest Insurance Provider in Southern Deltania, and has become a very successful firm over the years. If there was such thing as a "Big 5", B.S.I. would be the fifth company.

(facing west) Occupying the northwesternmost part of Downtown K.C. is the Atlas Motors Centre. Originally built in 1967, this convention centre has had numerous owners and name changes over the years, the owners before Atlas Motors being United Southern Oil, until they sold it to reduce expenses. Numerous Conventions and gatherings occur here, as this centre is one of the best places in the city for conventions. The convention currently taking place is the annual Atlas Motors Show, where the company shows off all of its new vehicles and vehicle-related technology.

(facing north) In the New Downtown is the headquarters of one of the Empire's biggest booze peddlers - Blackliver. Famous for their fine whiskey, Blackliver have since made brandy, wine, even their own lager and cider. They're partly responsible for the binge drinking culture of K.C., as well as the damage they've done to the city's youth partly because of the city's leniant advertising laws, lack of enforcement for minimum drinking age and cheap alcohol prices. Despite their atrocities the booze this company makes is still some of the best in Deltania. Blackliver was founded in Delta City in 1794, but moved its entire operation to Kanalka City in 1892, at a time when the mainland was trying to cut back on the public's alcohol concumption. Since then the company has flourished, and continues to flourish today. It's current hadquarters was built for the company in 1960.

(facing north) Rising out from the Downtown like a giant monument to capitalism and success is the Pinnacle. Rising nearly 1500 feet into the sky and visible from almost any part of te city, the tower was built in 2075, and became the tallest building in Deltania outside Delta City, a record which it lost only 3 years later. However, it is still the tallest building in Barrierland, and an impressive sight. It includes a huge luxury hotel, a mega-mall, high-wealth offices and luxury apartments at the very top. There are very few places in the world that can offer a sight like the apartments in the Pinnacle. This is the jewel in Kanalka City's Crown, a monument to the city's immense success, and the terrible things that have happened for the city to get there.

(facing north) Now a nightshot of Northkey Docks. The tallest building in the middle is the Kanalka City Equity Tower, once the headquarters of a long-gone finance firm. Today it houses numerous smaller companies, and the top part (the part with the corners lit in blue) is the headquarters of the Blue Angels. After the De Santa family, the Blue Angels are the biggest organized crime syndicate in the city, and have connections all over the country, even in the capital, Delta City. The Penthouse is home to the leader of the Angels. To the left of the Equity Tower is the Embassy Hotel, the largest 4-star hotel in the city. To the right are a couple of high-end apartments.

(facing east) To finish off, a nightshot of some high-rise offices along Central Avenue.

Well that's it for update 17, I hope you enjoyed it! The next update will probably on Monday the 21st, and we'll be taking a look at the West Side of the Harbour. See you then! ;D ;D
