Title: Making Trains Longer
Post by: dragonshardz on November 08, 2009, 10:21:34 AM
I'd like to mod my trains so that passenger trains have a minimum of 10 cars plus the engine, and freight a minimum of 20 cars plus engine. What properties do I need to edit in the reader and what file are they in?

I think there is something in NAM you can change. Maybe check the installation options and the documentation. Otherwise try to locate the property that controls this in properties.xml.

But I think 10-car long pax trains and 20-car long freight trains won't be looking good, they will be too long for most station lots.

You would need to edit the NAM automata plugin, which is found in the NAM (Network Addon Mod) folder.
Open the file, e.g. NetworkAddonMod_Automata_Plugin_Standard.dat, in Reader,
and locate the properties Commute Train Length and Freight Train Length.

By default the former is set to 0x03, 0x08, which means the commute train length is between 3 and 8 cars.
The latter is by default set to 0x09, 0x0F, which means the freight train length is between 9 and 15 cars.

Oh, btw... did I mention that you should backup that file before editing it? ::)

Yes, you did, thanks.

EDIT: Or I could just make a separate .dat, with those two properties modified correctly, that loads after the NAM.

I got to tell you Canadian Rail has trains a mile long run through my state, and they take forever to cross! I know because I can hear them at night, and all the car traffic starting after the gates go up after over an hours time.

ROFL . . . Gratitude for the hearty belly laugh!!!  Still, I can definitely understand why the motorists would be quite annoyed at having to yield for such long trains.  They should think about becoming railfans -- people who spend their time watching and filming trains.  I was once on the eastbound Sunset Limited July 2017 when the train could not proceed because of a freight train in front of us that itself was held up by another freight train  to our left and behind us having technical difficulties with one of its locomotives.  Ugh, it really is a crime the way that large corporations have been allowed to have liberty here in the United States that should only be afforded to the private citizen!!!

Aeh... do you get you answered to a thread that is almost a decade old? And with an off-topic comment?
You can always open another thread for that, reviving old ones is generally frowned upon...

And then, there is the issue of proportions. I laugh quietly when I zoom in and notice the disproportions of everything: people and cars, cars and routes, and so on. But hey, it's just a game.
