Title: NAM Version 31 Release Date Announcement
Post by: Tarkus on January 20, 2013, 04:42:10 PM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2FTarkus%2FSC4Dshowcase%2Fnam-31-animation.gif&hash=28e8000d5a92b0e46c45c8a9a43783ac34fc69e9)

For the first time ever, the NAM Team has decided to surprise people . . . by not surprising them.  The 31st NAM release was made available to the public on March 1st 2nd, 2013.

We've simply updated the existing download, so click "Most Popular" on the LEX, and it'll take you right to it.  If you're already logged into the LEX (not the forums), you'll find it at this link (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=851).

Here's a little of what you'll find.

Please note that some documentation is still forthcoming as of this writing.

Also:

Starting with this new version of the NAM (NAM 31), the long term policy of recommending uninstallation of your previous NAM before installing a new one is being completely reversed.  Due to major changes in the NAM installer, from now on, whenever you install or reinstall NAM 31 or later, you should NOT uninstall your old NAM.  This will allow the installer to detect what options you have selected from previous installations, and make sure that they're selected by default if you use the Custom installation type.  Even if you think your old version of the NAM may have become corrupted, the new installer will fix everything.  The only time you should uninstall your version of the NAM is if you don't want it on your system anymore.  If that is the case, please use the uninstaller program in the main NAM folder, as the NAM contains registry entries as well as files that need to be deleted.

-Tarkus (on behalf of the whole NAM Team)

Oh, I'm freaking out. Dang.  Good month for me. Nam Gang Style is out and so is Noah's Birthday! Oh, I'm gonna party.

Just a little disappointing, because it's not in February.... I just love the month of February. &bis&

I just did three or four legitimate double-takes . . . we NEVER announce release dates . . .

. . . until today, that is. Looking forward to sharing the finished product with everyone!

As an interesting aside (that had nothing to do with picking that particular date, as I haven't had an opportunity to visit the forums for a few days), that will also be my 31st birthday.  :D

Call me a paranoid conspiracy nut, but I have this voice in the back of my head saying 'hm, if a last minute bug popped up and they missed that date, it would sure teach people a lesson about asking for release dates'.

I hope I'm crazy  ???

^^ That's why we do extensive testing and put in a feature freeze at least at two weeks in beforehand to reduce this kind of thing ;)

Will be magnificent! My intuition (and logic) told me that the release would be around this date to "compete" with the new Simcity. :)

I do not think the launch before the new simcity is to compete with it, because already more than clear that public is totally different.

At least the launch of the new game served to stir news in SC4 as mods weather , new tools  and of course the new NAM.

&apls Congratulations to all the effort in keep alive this anthological simulator, and twist to have some years still in focus and satisfying the passionates about the genre as us !

Which thread is it that lists what sorts of awesomeness we have to look forward to with NAM 31?  It's probably plane as day titled "NAM 31 features!" and my tired eyes are missing it.  Can't wait for the new NAM!

There's no single thread documenting all upcoming features, but they're spread out over the respective threads:

- General NAM (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1138.1220)
- RHW (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=990.0)
- Project Symphony (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15238.0)

Cheers

It's been a horrible 2012, a year in which from time immemorial NAM team did release their wonderful products. Now at the beginning of 2013 there is light at the end of the dark tunnel and it is the 1 March.
I hope with all my heart and soul this year to those wonderful years in which NAM has 2 versions. It would be more wonderful if NAM 32 and be ready within this year.

Well, the NAM has increasingly become bigger, but something that also explains the longer release cycle is the complete conversion of the Real Highway Mod. And believe me, that's a huge undertaking....

From your own observations, how would you judge who NAM will be more complex to implement NAM31, or NAM32. However, the first mod affects Real Highways and second NWM, but who will be more complicated and difficult for you.

I wouldn't believe it either (clearly), but on the offchance that we release a Hotfix on such a day, would they believe it? (I swear, if it had troll-level textures in there...)

It'd probably look funny on the 10S because of the modular inner lanes. Either it would use funny overhangs or a lot more paint thinner.

Let's just say that whatever predictions we make for future releases of the NAM don't tend to come true as intended. For all I know, NAM 32 could might as well be an extension of NAM 31.

Besides, P57 was supposed to be RHW V6 was supposed to be RHW V5 was supposed to be RHW V4.2.

Legacy files will be included in the new NAM so everything that works in your cities now should work after you install the NAM. How many roads you will want to destroy and rebuild using all the new features is up to you though  ;)

You could just PM a NAM member to reply, I'm not sure who's in charge of the SC4D e-mails. I'm pretty sure it's the Admins, but I don't know for sure.

It'll be more than 21 hours.  It could be as many as 48.  A sizeable portion of the active development team lives in the Western US--it just hit midnight on the 28th here.

When we say "March 1st", it means anytime between 12:00am and 11:59pm on that date within Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8).  It'll be March 2nd in some places in the world when we release.

Well, as of now it's 22-46 hours away, so we're probably well within the 48-hour timeframe, assuming that it's not released in the last hours of March 1 (Pacific Time).

Come on guys! Who cares if it's 24, 48 or even 168 hours... The fact is it's coming in the nearest possible future and on time or not, this is a project created by a group of non-paid slave workers who take it out of their time to make things work. And what a project this is! Remember the times, when this was almoast non-functional? The times, when you could cross this network with practically nothing but standard maxis networks. When you had to demolish half a city just to make entrances, when it was limited to RHW-4 at best. Well thi network is now becoming so complex that it heavily surpasses all the maxis networks put together. And  for that we should be grateful to the NAM team (and well of course we all are, some just don't know how to show it). I am sure everyone is working like their lives depend on this project right now, so I myself ask you to humbly refrain from any questions, frustration ventilations and other comments until the files are available on the LEX near you for download. It just might give these awesome crazies that little something, that will make the NAM31 a tad bit better.
And if a delay comes with the realease I encourage a ban for anyone ranting about it.

They have certainly devoted a lot of their life to this effort without pay, but I wouldn't call them slave workers (since they're doing this voluntarily).

True. I pondered this morning about how far we've come, and the RHW has transcended the limitations of the original game when it comes to freeway designs. If, in 2003, I could have peered into the future and beheld NAM 31, I would have been stunned at what the NAM Team has accomplished. When the modern RHW was created 5 years ago (starter pieces, MIS, etc.), there was a long range vision of a realistic, modular, multi-purpose freeway system that one could use to recreate almost any real-world interchange, or even the freeway network of one's dreams. With the Multi-Height System and P57, that vision is now close to becoming reality, at least to a great degree. This represents a profound addition to the game for a roadgeek such as myself. The degree to which Tarkus and other NAMites have transformed our SC4 experience cannot be overestimated.

I am grateful to the NAM Team for all this, but I wanted to explain why we are and should be grateful to them. I'm sure I'll be even more grateful come March 1.

And here comes Slovenia. We have 5.12., 25.12. (with german standards of gift opening) and 31.12. First one is the old traditioned ''Miklavž'' with his devils that bring small gifts, mainly just some oranges a pair of socks and a stick from the devils for bad kids, the second is the commercial christmas as most people know it and the last is the remmenant of the ''good old times'' from Yugoslavia. The commie Santa called Granpa Cold (coming form faraway Siberian lands on a sled (not the flying one of course because that really isn't logical)) brings gifts right before New year if I recall corectly. This custom is however almoast forgatten, but back in the 90's when I was a kid it was luckily like that. =D So yeah.. go 90's!

I am getting very excited.......it's like having your favourite toy in front of you but not being able to play with until sometime tomorrow.

It's just like Christmas Eve when the presents are under the tree but you can't open them until morning. The anticipation is very high.

And what does one do if the new toy cannot be reached yet? Keep playing with the old toys of course ;D! I just finished this interchange today.

I have like 4 or 5 interchanges I've just been putting off making until NAM 31, and I just started my region. I'm sure I'm not the only one who already has plans for after the release.

Anything I make at this point I'd probably just end up remaking tomorrow.

Just a quick wish from me.
When everything is done and the file gets uploaded, do you think it might be possible to make a ''notification'' on the home page of this site, or maybe even the rolling text we have up there under the cover. You probably had that in mind already, but if you didn't I for one would be really happy to see things flashing and rolling around the site notifying that the time has come for the new NAM.

And today I made what will likely be my last RHW 5.0 interchange - a semi-directional T interchange, in close proximity to a partial roundabout interchange. I've been getting the maximum use out of the existing RHW before the release of the next version.

While using 11:59PST is a good estimate remember this...

March 1 isn't over until it crosses the International Date Line. The last time zone is UTC-11 (Niue/Samoa Standard Time). It is currently 8:30am there, meaning we have 15.5 hours left of March 1.

True, release dates do cause a lot of stress, but you should also bear in mind that it has been 18 months since the last NAM release and the RHW has been entirely revamped. Those are unusual circumstances which undoubtedly add to the tension.

That is a miserable excuse. A long break between release versions doesn't mean people can start to act less civilized on a forum, no?

I'm glad that this will be the first and only time that the NAM team have published a release date in advance, in light of the new SimCity release. Many people on this forum can't seem to take delays well, and even more seemed to have just created accounts for the sake of rushing the release.

All I can say is that we show the NAM team a little more respect, and have a little more patience. I seriously doubt that is too much to ask for.

I'm not excusing them, but rather pointing out that their behavior would tend to be worse than during a typical NAM development cycle. You should be aware of the inherent tension in this kind of situation. I'd also like to point out that we have it very good here if a little ungratefulness and some impatience is the worst behavior we see. A normally tame environment can lead to rudeness and failure to praise to be falsely equated. Some people have been ungrateful, and wrongly so, but on the whole it's a tempest in a teapot.

In any case it won't be long now. We have 6 hours and 32 minutes until the March 1 window closes, measured on Ganaram-Jondor-Tarkus-Z Time of course. The NAM Team still has plenty of time to get everything ready  :satisfied:.

Kinda haljackey, but can you blame them? Look at some of revolutionary tools coming out: the ability to make true stacked interchanges for example. We recognize there will probably be additional mods that come along afterward making them above functional and realistic. This NAM release is becoming more popular than a New Sim city.

That alone hints how popular this mod is: it helps a older Sim City that everyone is familiar with triumph over a newer version few have played and which EA promotes excessively.

I remember reading somewhere that bridges for the various RHW networks were going to be added to the NAM, is that included in NAM 31?

I keep telling myself to stop hitting refresh. NAM 31 will still be there tomorrow (it's not going away) but like a child I can't help but hit F5 one last time, which always leads to one more time.  :D

I advise you to stop hitting your F5 button. It's not good for your finger or your keyboard (or mouse).

Undoubtedly they are in the "homestretch" when it comes to releasing NAM 31. Let them do their job, cut them some slack, and don't make yourself nervous in the last few hours. It will only detract from the great experience you will have exploring NAM 31's features.

lol say what you want about making a release date but it has certainly rekindled a lot of attention for SC4. Just look at who's viewing this thread at the moment of this post:

On top of that add those who are not on this thread right now or are on other sites like Simtropolis or the SimCity Reddit.

In the meantime, let me reveal an undisclosed new feature as I am sure I have your attention.

Do you remember diagonal streets helper puzzle pieces and Flex MIS curves, which are built using a construction lot based layout that has to be demolished after being plopped? In NAM 31, all the starter puzzle pieces for NWM, RHW, SAM, GLR, STR and HSR are converted to this technique as well.

Before:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F121f8dcee68465f564541b1bd334bc3b.jpg&hash=6a217ae13f2a40e2601d22cce149140adeffcf49) (http://www.ld-host.de/)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fabb812015cc7786d230901156bf8af4a.jpg&hash=55df5d758feb1d591fb3d6d74b94b3d89c8ead01) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Due to an advanced modding trick, these puzzle pieces have however been modified in a way such that the construction Lot automatically demolishes itself after plopping the puzzle piece. In the case of starter puzzle pieces, you end up with the false intersection initiating the override, only, but there is no puzzle piece anymore that needs to be demolished.

After:

And why would that be a problem? I'd rather let the NAM team publish the release at their own pace.

I don't remember the NAM team making a contractual agreement with us that the release /must/ be out by 3/1. Nor are they obligated in any way to rush the release when it's not ready.

It'll be ready when it's ready.

Ah. Well, taking longer than expected is a bummer (I'm sure to you as much as it is to us), but I wouldn't want a bug-filled NAM. Just keep busy  :satisfied:.

I'm wondering will NAM31 be compatible with RHW mod?

The RHW (and for the record, everything else) is the NAM. How much does that tell you?
So SAM, STR, NWM, maybe HSRP will be also in new NAM 31  ()what()

Everything but the DBE, and one or two new toys that are non-RHW.

Just for the record, the NAM is now 200MB, ten times the limit of the STEX. Take into account how long it would take to move a monster that size.

The installer is 206MB.  Zipping up the installer actually increases it a few kilobytes, due to the file header.  Should be open for business in about 15 minutes.  Thank you to everyone for their patience during this process.

Um, that's the uncompressed file size, right?

No, that's the compressed size.  The uncompressed size is 736 MB.  Really.

It's official.  We're live.

I've simply updated the existing download, so click "Most Popular" on the LEX, and it'll take you right to it.

Also, another piece of pertinent information--installation processes have been simplified.

Additionally, we are no longer offering separate Mac versions.  You can extract the NAM installer executable like a .zip on a Mac using Keka (http://www.kekaosx.com), and opening the executable with that to do a manual install as before.  You'll want to rename the "$[65]" folder to "z___NAM" upon extraction.

But only if you use the plugin folder in "My Documents" and not the one in SC4's root?! (That is my case cause on C: I only got 4GB free without my SC4 plugins! I had to move them.)

Would be great if the cleanitol scans the choosen path when you customize the installation  (maybe for some later release)

Ditto this, cleantol was searching for my plugins in mydoc instead of Steamapps....

Also Got an issue, well more of a something-I-have-no-idea-how-to-resolve... SAM 6 new texture and Moonlinght textures are missing. For SAM 6 it says "not installed" while for ML it says " ##Intersection Placement String Missing ## "

If anyone knows, that would be great as I heavily use ML's mod. (and note that I have moved out his mod before testing... Even when it is here ( SAM9 override)  the issue persists.

Are you sure did select those texture variations in the installer? They should be selected by default, but perhaps they are unchecked because you did not have those styles in your previous installation (obviously). You can make sure by running the installer again and choosing the custom installation type.

Yes, it is recommended to install NAM 31 over any NAM installation. You can safely install over NAM 30, as well as over NAM 31 even, so as to customize your installation.

@memo

It's working now. Seems like I did overpass the SAM line in the installation. Thanks. :)

BUT, one very negative point. As the previous mod was a SAM9 override, I'll have to DESTROY and REBUILD ALL the street I had lay down in my region because they're now back on the ugly red brick street....

And here comes the second one. It puts Simfox's chestnuts on the side of the streets. I don't want them I want CP's cherrys. I Don't have any chestnuts mod installed.

Before I install the NAM, I've got a few questions. Is it possible to view the ReadMe before installing? I'd like to see what I will install, especially concerning the road textures. Is it also possible to change the textures from time to time? Do I need to run the installer again then?

With a standard installation, the hole diggers are in the Misc. Transit menu beneath the stations. There's also a self-destructing hole digger/raiser piece in the road menu if you select it in the custom installation.

Yeah, that's been done by me when I had figured out how to create smooth curve textures (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15135.0). I am delighted that you noticed.

With a standard installation, the hole diggers are in the Misc. Transit menu beneath the stations. There's also a self-destructing hole digger/raiser piece in the road menu if you select it in the custom installation.

EDIT: This samerton guy is wicked fast  $%Grinno$%

Cheers
Willy

I actually had to do a custom install to get the hole diggers - both of them.

It looks like the Avenue 90 degree curve was fixed so it's more symmetrical. The previous one was awkwardly wide on one end of the curve.

Yeah, that's been done by me when I had figured out how to create smooth curve textures (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15135.0). I am delighted that you noticed.

I've noticed that the geometry on pretty much every smooth curve piece has been improved and it looks very good.

Click in the middle of the crossing using the Rail tool. (Yeah, due to interference with Draggable FAR, we made the RTL "selectively activatable".)

Which I like, as it conflicts with the NWM as well.

This is splendid.  Well done, team!

**Favorite new feature**  The included .pdf manuals -- honest to Kibo. I <3 these very much.

Am really enjoying the new menu layout -- the biggest obstacle to competence with these powerful mods was the sheer volume of icons, I really appreciate the clearer icons in the Highway section, and the included underpasses are gorgeous.

I'm so glad my favorite games have such wonderful communities supporting them.

You mean the manuals that weren't supposed to be included because they weren't done yet?

Except when it contains information that not only is supposed to be kept from the public, but if exposed to the public, will lead to misinformation.

Yeah, noticed a few oddities when reading through.

One thing is that the Symphony ramps have starter overrides whereas I just get RHW-2...

Ditto this, cleantol was searching for my plugins in mydoc instead of Steamapps....

By default, Cleanitol searches both Plugins folders in the disc version of the game.  I keep my plugins in the Program Files version of that folder, so I know it works there.

However, Cleanitol does not know about Steam, and it should.  I will talk to its developer about this.  In the mean time, could you (or anyone) please let me know what folder structure Steam uses for SC4?

Is it also possible to change the textures from time to time?

Yes, whenever you want.  If you have installed textures separately from the NAM, you should uninstall those, though, and use the NAM version.  (This will be automated soon.)

QuoteDo I need to run the installer again then?

Yes, but it's a simple process.  Just choose the "Custom" installation, and the installer will start out with all your current options checked, and nothing more.  So the only changes made to your installation will be ones that you make yourself on the Components page.

Design choice. The ramps for Symphony don't have starters to allow tight interchange construction.

Hey guys,
is it possible that you also release ONLY the Readme/Documentation here or somewhere else?
Because I don't want to install NAM 31 already (I'm waiting for the german version which is usually nearly bug-free), but I still want to know what changes were made and what is possible now...

Actually, most of the German files previously only found at the German sites can now be found here and at Simtropolis. The German translation, the partial Dutch translation and limited Japanese translation are now released as part of the main build and installed automatically. The German ones a little out of date when it comes to core content and the RHW though as far as I'm aware.

okay, that's great :)
but anyway, it would be great if I could read the Documentation files without having to install it atm (I think it's better to wait for the bugfixes)

Edit: would be great for other users if you'd update the NAM 31 description regarding the other languages...

As NAM 31 has been superseded by NAM 31.1, topic closed.
