Title: Creating a waterfall - Multiimage tutorial
Post by: jeronij on November 17, 2006, 08:41:57 AM
Hello dear Sim City 4 devotion members.

I am having a terribly busy week, but this afternoon I decided to reserve some time and post the first chapter in this waterfall making mega tutorial. The result pics have been seen in my CJ Simtropia. Now you can see how I arrived to them.

CREATING A WATERFALL  -  CHAPTER 1

First you need an adequate place. If you use a snowscapped terrain mod, I suggest you to start your waterfall at snow level at least.  The idea is to join plopable water and Maxis water in a somehow credible way.

I have used Wawe3 (*) stream mod and some plopable stuff to create this waterfall. All this stuff is available at Simtropolis STEX.

(*) Dont abuse of this effect if you dont have a Pentium Core Duo  ;)

In this pic you can see the initial layout. Plopable water up, normal water down. ( I have just noticed that I was using the Diagonal  edges mod while taking this pic... :-[ )

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F7366%2Fbotwtf0101gi9.jpg&hash=c9a70964084e4547d9ea1ac0f7ed3d0c805471f7)

The first work is around the waterfall itself. Some micro terraforming is needed to give the area a more natural way.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F4992%2Fbotwtf0102ph6.jpg&hash=7f9f3d0cff193c1a4c118dc9b76dd7706b57fe12)

Also some work has been done with the plopable water...a more integrated look.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg455.imageshack.us%2Fimg455%2F729%2Fbotwtf0103ko1.jpg&hash=afa2e93f802d38fa879d74c3984c2c78e499eccd)

Now it is time to work with the simulated middle island. First I fix the contours using some rocks and trunks...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg455.imageshack.us%2Fimg455%2F9588%2Fbotwtf0104gi9.jpg&hash=de0bd8201b5d972ffeae89b5e3ca07b5db196ea2)

And some trees and more plopable stuff to finish the island.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F9452%2Fbotwtf0105lp6.jpg&hash=ef139c4bf436abbf89af97e7041596a88418a04c)

Now it is time to start adding some details to the waterfall itself. Some variated trees and rocks help to accomplish this.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F4425%2Fbotwtf0106cr6.jpg&hash=199d9b878d975a042643291d1711bef083470c06)

The situation starts to look better now....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F402%2Fbotwtf0107qh9.jpg&hash=6f4fff33dfc43663ff0cfc4f6021b6190372f25c)

A front view now.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg455.imageshack.us%2Fimg455%2F3905%2Fbotwtf0108nb4.jpg&hash=08e4ec227de058e62e191e5321184121c610f09d)

And still another view....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg455.imageshack.us%2Fimg455%2F5620%2Fbotwtf0109xc2.jpg&hash=5b83843537ff0757ced0459f412441581142ab3e)

And my favourite view.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F1720%2Fbotwtf0110ta5.jpg&hash=a5ac3292cabcef11b94793dfd6ffe65580eb20fd)

OK, now the waterfall starts to look ok. It is time to work a bit with the surrounding mountains...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F7522%2Fbotwtf0111tj2.jpg&hash=030b5be8c532125a9582e5a69d13c69d62383797)

Some work after...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F1807%2Fbotwtf0112ub3.jpg&hash=76f40f58530541c063f9b5af033b880c1bf6f1ac)

To finish, some more views after manual terraforming and trees adition.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg470.imageshack.us%2Fimg470%2F3682%2Fbotwtf0113cv8.jpg&hash=63b64bb60f2c47619a3136a7fb2b54e6d15e9ff0)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg455.imageshack.us%2Fimg455%2F4606%2Fbotwtf0114tx8.jpg&hash=08bfdd8dcca92764212430722b0d57ae660c3f30)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F8227%2Fbotwtf0115ac5.jpg&hash=7f39a17a912d639c3c28a1fdc9b0825cb4c608cd)

I hope you find these pics useful. I have a couple more to post when I have some more time.

A nasty enviromental disaster upriver.

To be honest it was a shallow water mod i was trying.

I don't like it, so am removing it,  when i can find, where i put it! :angrymore:

hence the topic about plugins! ::)

Nice work TTC
I am glad to see that the tutorial is useful  ;)

My only suggestion, try to use more vaiated plopable stuff. Gizmo´s acuatic plants do help A LOT when creating waterfalls:  http://www.gizmo.lunarpages.com/

I´ll post some more pics about this waterfall asap  ;)

Really usefull tutorial!

And it's wonderful to see you use the "tropical reef" in that environment. I would have never gotten the idea if I hadn't seen you do it, jeronij.

Is it possible for anyone to fix the images in this thread?  I would love to see the tutorial images, but I get blank icons every time I look at this thread?

The tut is from 6 years ago, imageshack probably eat the pics by now.  $%Grinno$%

You could ask Jeronij to put them back up though, given he's the site owner I'd say there's a change they're still around somewhere.

Hello, I have been able to recover half of the pictures. The other half has been eaten by Imageshack... Hope it is enough to see the idea ¡¡ ;)
