Time for an update! Today we're moving on to the South-West tile of Kanalka City, where the naval port, Wilberforce Harbour is located. Today we'll just be looking at the suburbs that surround the harbour. Now, it's been mentioned that the suburban areas of my cities look somewhat repetitive. While I have downloaded more houses to counter this issue, this was after I finished this tile, so while the residential areas here don't have the new houses, the South-East tile does. Anyway, before we go on a journey round the suburbs, we have replies:

Your city is so cosmopolitan, it's awesome. I know some Pensites that sure would like to vacation here!

Well soon enough we'll be visiting an airport, but not one you'd want to take a flight to. ;)

Now for the pics...

(facing east) In the southwestern areas of Kanalka City, just south of the casinos and clubs of the Magnificent Mile and the stadiums of Arena City, are numerous suburbs and industrial estates surrounding Wilberforce Harbour. We start by the west shores, where we can see one of two major Sewage Outflow Facilities in the city. Although the facility was shut down and demolished in the 2030's, the pipes still remain, and since the city's sewage has been treated at clean, efficient facilities since the late 2020's, the pipes have served as little more than storm drains. This was welcomed by the patrons of Bayou Beach  slightly to the north, who were getting tired of picking rubbish and dead fish out from between their toes after swimming in the sea.

(facing south) Firstly, I know that this picture doesn't look as good as it could be because of the cutaway view, but I didn't want to reveal too much of the Naval Port and the facilities surrounding it, which we'll see in the next update. This is new Penrith, the residential neighbourhood that separates Arena City and the Magnificent Mile from the Port. While its westernmost section consists of wealthy mansions and villas, the majority of the neighbourhood is home to middle-income families, who are drawn to the area because many of the city's better schools are found here. Also, New Penrith has on average the lowest crime rate in the city, mainly due to the huge military presence in the area.

(facing north) Along the northern edge of Wilberforce Harbour is its railyard. Originally, the railyard was built to transport fuel for the ships, but today the tanks hold other liquids and gases. Most of the cargo brought in by train is ammunition and vehicles, but it transports food and other supplies as well.

(facing south) New Penrith Station is the next stop on Kanalka City Mainline after Arena City South. It caters to the residential areas as well as the north side of Wilberforce Harbour. It's located just across the street from the Naval Technical College. It was built in 1925, around the time when Wilberforce Harbour was being expanded.

(facing south) Moving further east the Kanalka City Western Ring Road comes into view, as it heads south the join the M105 near the Barrier Beach. Most of New Penrith's commercial development is located in its western half, as well as a couple of small apartment complexes built along Martin Street, the wide road that runs east-west across the neighbourhood. On the other side of the railway line is the industrial areas that line the east side of Wilberforce Harbour.

(facing south) On the other side of the K.C. Western Ring Road is Havelock, which is more densely populated than New Penrith due to the number of apartments and townhouses in this neighbourhood. Originally, the townhouses would have been given to retired Naval Officers as a reward for their years of service, but now many have been converted into flats. In the pic we can see Havelock Church, which was built in 1934 for the families of the Navy Personnel.

(facing north) Further South, the Havelock Market Building comes into view. It's one of the oldest buildings in the area, originally opening in 1825, when it was part of a sugarcane farm when there was no substantial development in this area. When the neighborhood and the Naval Harbour were built in the early 20th Century, the building was converted into a large market, a purpose it continues to serve to this day. Across the street is a hyper-modern Lunar-Tec car showroom, manufacturers or high-tech city cars.

(facing east) Separating New Penrith and Havelock is the K.C. Western Ring Road. This interchange is one of the busier junctions on the Ring Road, as it serves most of the harbour area and provides quick access to the Port and the M105 Motorway. This junction was upgraded in 2023 from a basic diamond to a SPUI due to congestion problems. The large area of waste ground next to the Junction used to be a light manufacturing complex, but a fire in 2056 destroyed much of it, and so it was torn down. There are plans for building an entertainment complex here, but so far nothing is confirmed. So for now, at least, this giant patch of bare concrete will continue to serve as a dumping ground, a drug dealer's haunt, and a place for people to settle their differences. Like now for example. Looks like a couple of gangsters are about to have a one-on-one street race.

(facing west) Moving to the southern outskirts of Havelock, we see luxury shops and industrial estates. To the left of the pic we can see the northern portal of the Havelock Tunnel.

(facing north) This is one of the main rail junctions of the city. The Barrierland Mainline, coming from the east turns south towards the coast, where it will run parallel with the south side of Wilberforce Harbour, before it leaves the city and continues to the western tip of the Barrier Islands. Here it meets the Kanalka City mainline, which completes a full circle around the city.

(facing north) Here we have the Southern Portal of the Havelock Tunnel. Built in 2045, the tunnel improved the congestion problem in the area, and improved travel times around the station. Mistgreen Station was built in 1984, and the Metro Station a year later. The entrance for the Metro Station was rennovated in 2018. The rail station lies on the Barrierland Mainline and so it gets busy at peak times, while the Metro Station lies on the Outer Circle Line, which isn't as busy as the Inner Circle line, which serves the Downtown and the City Centre.

(facing west) Mistgreen Gardens lies on the southern outskirts of the city, and is named by the nearby pond and woodland. As you can see it's an affluent neighbourhood, as the rich are drawn to Mistgreen Gardens by its quiet position on the outskirts of Kanalka City, as well as the nearby woodland.

(facing north) Just south of its namesake neighbourhood, Mistgreen is popular with nature lovers due to its wildlife that thrives in the marshes and forests. Unfortunately, like everything in K.C., there is a darker side to it. This is one of the most popular places in the city to dump bodies and contraband, due to its location on the outskirts of the city. In the pic we can also see a few mansions, built by those who want to be close to nature, but still want to live in luxury. Or maybe they just want to have an excellent signal from K.C.B.L. 95.5. (Kanalka City Blues Line)

(facing north) To finish off, we have a night shot of the tallest building in the South-West suburbs, 1 Campbell Street. Also known simply as the Campbell Tower, this office building was built in 1965 to provide much-needed office space at the time.

Well that's it for this update, next time we'll be having a look at Wilberforce Harbour, one of the largest Naval Bases in the country. See you then! ;D ;D

You've got some problems with transparent lot bases. I also don't see much of a rail depot. More like a small industrial connection. The first and last but one pictures are very nice, though.

Great job on this, I love the simple, but complex road network.

I agree with Swordmaster, the rail depot needs a main warehouse, a roundhouse if you like, a big railyard, plus many more features to it. For the transparent base tiles, try placing them RIGHT BEFORE you take the picture for maximum results.

Keep up the good work! ;)

Time for Update 30! Today we'll be taking a look around Wilberforce Harbour, which is a major Naval Base in Deltania, and is home to many famous ships in the Deltan Navy. It was first built as a small harbour for Naval Ships to resupply, but during the Alterra War it was expanded into one of the largest Naval Bases in the country. First, the replies:

I noticed that as well, but as usual only once I'd taken the pictures and uploaded them. I'll keep an eye on those lots in the future. (as I do use them a lot) Also I see what you mean about the rail depot, I guess it is a bit small considering the harbour's size, but there is a second rail "depot" (again, too small to call a proper depot) in this update, so that does increase rail freight capacity for the harbour. But considering Kanalka City's location on the Barrier Islands, rail connections to the rest of the country is somewhat limited, so most cargo for the harbour will be brought in by sea or road.

Thanks, I'm pleased you liked my road layout. ;D I always lay out all the transport networks first before anything else, which helps to minimize the need for improvements or alterations later on. ;)

Picture time...

(facing south) The idea of building a harbour in the south-west of Kanalka Key was first suggested in 1754. When construction of the first part of the harbour was completed in 1760, it was nothing more than a small dockyard for the recently created Deltan Navy to store goods and resupply before reaching the mainland or taking the long voyage across the Catalan Sea. During the Delta War of the 1790's, the Harbour was expanded to store more supplies and hold more ships, as Kanalka Key was the first major settlement that ships travelling to Delta City would reach. (This was in the days before the construction of Hasbury Passage, when ships would have to sail around the West Tip of the Barrier Islands to reach the Delta Estuary) We start our tour at the headquarters of the harbour, (in the centre of the image) occupying the centre of the small peninsula where the original harbour was first built. The gate facing the main road, in front of the H.Q. was once part of the fortifications that were mostly destroyed during the Alterra War.

(facing north) Also on this peninsula is Fire Wharf. It is named after the Fireboat Station that was built here in 1804. It is currently the oldest surviving building in the harbour, and miraculously survived the Wilberforce Harbour Bombings of 1938, when all the other buildings were destroyed. It sustained damage to the roof, but continued to operate. The station currently has two fireboats, the larger one being built in 2023. It's still in use, (Despite the fact it appears to have a substantial leak in its hull) but only for emergencies in more open water, as its large size makes it less affected by heavy seas. The smaller boat was built in 2060, and its small size and fast speed allows it to respond to any size fire, in any part of the harbour very quickly. Also in the pic is the H.M.S. Belmont, a relatively small vessel carrying missiles armed with very deadly Nanite Warheads, capable of extensive, controlled destruction on any target, from a single ship to an entire city. The Alterra Council has placed a strict limit on the number of Nanite Warheads to 200 for each Empire, and the Belmont carries 23.

(facing west) This is one of the most legendary ships in the Deltan Navy - the H.M.S. Invulnerable. This enormous battleship was launched in 1942 from St. Leonard City, during the height of the Alterra War. At the time, it was the largest, most heavily armed and heavily armoured warship ever built, and was exactly what Deltania and the Allies needed to regain dominance of the seas. It was the first of three Invulnerable-class Battleships to be built, and is still in service today, making it the longest-serving vessel still afloat in the Deltan Navy, as well as the entire Imperial Navy. Its heavy armour and weaponry made it an ideal escort ship, and during the war it escorted many supply fleets across the Catalan Sea and Beyond. The Invulnerable also served its original role as a Battleship during the war, and destroyed more than its fair share of Axis Warships, and helped tip the balance of power at Sea in the Allies' favour. During the 21st Century, when battleships were virtually obsolete, the Invulnerable was again used as an escort ship for ships in waters infested with pirates and later, Inferno Supporters. It still makes the occasional voyage from time to time, but hasn't seen combat since 2063.

(facing north) On the north side of the harbour, (as its name suggests) is the North Wall. This extension to the Harbour was made in 1940 after the 1938 Harbour Bombings, to cater to larger vessels, primarily Aircraft Carriers. Today, the harbour side of the Wall is home to Deltania's Hermes-class Submarines, which are currently the fastest subs in the World. While lightly armed, they were built for Patrol and Reconnaissance Missions, rather than attacking or defending. They were first built in 2056, and entered service in 2058. They were used extensively during the Inferno War, and proved vital in spotting Naval Patrols and Sea-based fortifications that would have impeded the Empire's war effort. Next to it is the Wilberforce Coastguard Station. The building is the oldest on the North Wall, being built in 1942. The coastguard serves the Barrier Islands as well as the nearby swamps, its sleek, shallow hull making it ideal for traversing the narrow passages that drug boats are often hiding in.

(facing east) Here we have another Battleship, the H.M.S. Centurion. Built in 1974 as the first Centurion-class Battleship, it ended up being the only one, as there were no wars at the time. The reason for its construction was because of the L.I.N. (League of Independent Nations) was apparently spying on the Three Empires, secretly surveying their military forces to see if they were vulnerable. Whether or not this was actually true, the Deltan Government decided to build a large battleship as a sort of scare tactic. It costs hundreds of millions to construct, and never saw real combat. In fact, the only time its ever needed to use its guns was when it went on its first mission to patrol the Catalan Sea. It sunk a 60-foot yacht suspected to be carrying heroin off the coast of Serberno Tikina in 1989. At the time, it was considered a huge waste of money, the White Elephant of the Imperial Navy. However, in 2013, rather than scrapping it, it was refurbished and converted into a transport ship. The guns were left on not out of necessity, it was simply cheaper than dismantling them.

(facing west) The Central Intelligence Office at Wilberforce Harbour is one of fifteen in Deltania, with the headquarters located just outside Delta City. It is responsible for all intelligence concerns at the harbour, as well as providing battle tactics and fleet coordination during times of war. Behind it is Parade Plaza, used for Naval Graduations, Naval Shows and victory parades, as well as the occasional funeral service for high-ranking officers.

(facing north) Overlooking the Harbour are the Northern Warehouses, used mainly for storing food and other perishables. Opposite is the Central Training Centre, named so because it serves the Central Barracks. Also found here is the L.A.V. (Large Armoured Vehicle) Maintenance Centre.

(facing east) Matteson Pier is located between Cartwright Dockyard (to the top) and Baird Dockyard. (to the bottom) The Pier is really more of a small peninsula, built with the first expansion of the Harbour in 1793. In the Alterra War the pier was packed with Warehouses, all of which were destroyed by Bombers in the attack of 1938. After the War numerous smaller piers were built, to handle the new fleet of Patrol Boats that were constructed to help counter the Drug Boat problem that plagued the Deltan Coast after the Alterra War. The fleet was replaced completely in 2070, for the third time. The large empty area in the centre of the pier once had warehouses, but after the Bombing of 1938 This space was used as a Firing Range, as well as a place for the Harbour's Fire Crews to practice firefighting, as there was ample room for the equipment and fake houses and ship hulls that were used for training.

(facing north) Further along we have the Northern Barracks. The smaller building house the harbour's engineers, as they are in a convenient distance of the maintenance facilities and the Naval College. The Maintenance Centre caters to all vehicles in the Harbour, armoured or not, as well as providing storage for these vehicles.

(facing north) Here we can see some of the more important buildings in the harbour. On the left was have the Kanalka City Military Hospital, which caters primarily to the harbour, but is open to civilians as well. to the left of that is the main shopping centre of the harbour, providing all of the basic supplies for the soldiers during their stays in the Barracks. This way they don't have to experience the filth and depravity of Kanalka City that awaits outside the perimeter of the harbour. To the right is the Engineer's School, one of the Premier Engineering Schools in the country. All of the harbour's technicians are trained here, where they learn everything they'll need aboard their vessel, in times of war and peace.

[

(facing east) Near the Harbour is the Haverton Housing Estate. Built in the late 1960's it's one of the smaller estates built in the Mid-20th Century. It lies on the edge of the Industrial Area of Haverton, which lies just east of Wilberforce Harbour. Most of the residents here work in the Industrial Area.

(facing east) Just south of the Haverton Estate is a Lee-Harland Distribution Centre. Lee-Harland is one of the largest overland shipping companies in the south, and caters to all the coastal counties, with its headquarters in Delta City. Nearby are three disused Gas Holders, that were once part of a small gasworks built in 1920. When the facility was demolished in 1976, the Gas Holders remained for another 10 years, and when their demolition was planned, environmentalists staged a rally, because many species of birds, rarely seen in the Barrier Islands were roosting in the framework. The protests worked, and the giant frames remain to this day. Not the rest of the gasworks though, that's now an S-Mart.

(facing north) The Dry Docks were the last addition to be made to Wilberforce Harbour, completed in 1945, just in time for the end of the Alterra War. While they may have been too late to repair ships for the War, to this day ships visit these dry docks regularly for repainting, refitting and refurbishing.

(facing north) Dockyards 1 to 5 were added during the early 1940's, and were built in record time to provide more room for ships and storage for the increasing number of Naval Engagements during the Alterra War. Most of the ships berthed at these Dockyards are destroyers and escort ships.

(facing south) Further West. Docked here are two Type-99 Destroyers, and an Inquisitor-class Escort Ship.

(facing west) Occupying nearly half of Dockyard 1 is the H.M.S. Benjamin Ross. While it looks a lot like a Battleship, this vessel is in fact a far more advanced ship, as it was the first naval ship to have only laser weaponry on board. When it launched in 2063, it headed directly for Pantaniya, in order to destroy the shielding systems that were mostly invulnerable to projectile-based attacks. The large triple-cannons are capable of destroying a shielding system large enough to cover a large stadium, whereas all batteries firing together are capable of destroying any known shielding system that exists today. The smaller guns can swivel fast and were built primarily for shooting down missiles. The Ship was named after the Deltan Prime Minister at the time.

(facing north) On the opposite side of the Harbour is the second rail depot and the harbour's Ammunition Depot. The Barracks here are mainly for the Crew of smaller destroyers and Patrol Boats.

(facing east) This is the Western Entrance to Wilberforce Harbour. The Training Centre here is for Navy Personnel to be trained for things such as running aground or boarding other ships during combat. There is also a coastal combat training centre nearby, in a somewhat unlikely place that we'll see in a later update.

(facing north) This Memorial is built on what used to be a large fort, built in 1779. Fort Baird, named after a famous Barrierland Commodore during the Deltan Revolutionary War was built on top of a large hill, to provide unparalleled views all around. From the fort, soldiers could look towards the swamps to the north, the West tip of Barrierland to the west, Delta City and Hasbury Key to the East and the Catalan Sea to the South. Its location at the entrance of Wilberforce Harbour meant the ships docked there were pretty safe, and it was the construction of Fort Baird that helped make the harbour safer for ships, which led to its expansion during the Delta War in the 1790's. However, the fort was not immune to air attacks, and although anti-aircraft guns were built in 1938, the fort was torn apart by bombers as they laid waste to the harbour. A memorial was built in 1978, and is open to the public during the Summer.

(facing west) Zooming out we see Mount Baird in its entirety. Although it's hardly a "mount", being only 426 feet above sea level at the summit, it's still the highest natural point in Kanalka City and Hasbury Key and it was vital to the protection of the harbour before the invention of the airplane. However, in 1938, Mount Baird's obsolescence as a natural defence became apparent when the entire harbour was devastated by a squadron of Axis Bombers, leaving the harbour and Fort Baird in ruins. The Antenna halfway up was built in 2034 and serves the Naval Communications network for the harbour.

(facing east) To finish off, a night pic of the H.M.S. Argentum, a Helicopter Carrier launched in 2034. While it's capable of carrying a full squadron of Hurricane Attack VTOLs, it's flight deck isn't wide enough for carrying the Empire's Albatross Gunships.

That's it for this update, next time we'll be taking a look Southside, as well as another, more unusual part of the city. See you next week! ;D ;D

Nice work. I'm a bit surprised at how much transit capacity you've provided for this base. Then again, I don't know too much about any of that.

That's a valid counter. Rails are indispensible to me, but they're not a must-have everywhere. Also, who knows what'll happen by the 2080s ;)

Update time! This is the third and last update on this tile, before we move onto the south-east tile of Kanalka City, and the last main part of the city. It isn't quite ready yet, so there may be a smaller update beforehand depending on whether I finish it or not. Anyway, today we're visiting Southside, which as its name suggests is located south of the rest of the city, on the narrow strip of land between Wilberforce Harbour and the abandoned Airport, which we'll also be looking at today. But first are the replies...

Thanks, I'm pleased you liked my update. ;D The reason for all the large roads was firstly I thought that a lot of people were going to be commuting to the harbour (Many of the SNM Naval lots provide hundreds of jobs) but in the end they were only working at the dry docks. Also, some of the larger roads are part of the city's main road network, and just ended up terminating at the harbour. Also, I imagine a naval harbour of this size would have a lot of trucks going in and out with personnel and cargo, not to mention convoys of high-importance cargo. :)

Cheers, glad you liked it. I was originally planning to place an actual fort or military installation, but nothing I found really looked right, so I decided to build a memorial instead. :) :)

Now for Update 31...

(facing north) We start this update just east of Southside and south of Mistgreen and Havelock, where the K.C. Western Ring Road terminates at Junction 8 of the M105, after completing its counter-clockwise journey around the western half of the City. In the top left is an abandoned Chemical Plant, destroyed during the 1991 Tsunami. The Interchange as a modified T-Bone, with one of the flyover ramps on the inside lane of the Ring Road to save space.

(facing east) Nearby is the Kanalka City Speedway. This small venue was constructed in 1975, and still hosts racing events to this day. While not large enough to hold races from the CATCAR and CarverCar series, the Speedway regularly hosts stock-car races, buggy races and even go-kart championships. Motorsports aren't as popular in Barrierland as they are in other places in the country, so the city has no need for a full-sized speedway. The ruined Chemical Plant behind it was built in the early 1940's by the Dalton Broderick Chemical Company. Due to fears of rail links to the Barrier Islands being disrupted or destroyed during the Alterra War, the government decided to permit construction of a Chemical Plant in Kanalka City to provide chemicals directly to the Harbour. At the time Dalton Broderick was the largest Chemical company in Deltania, but went out of business in 2014. This plant was in full use up until the great Tsunami of 1991, when the huge waves smashed through the facility, destroying most of the facility, and contaminating a large portion of Kanalka City with hazardous chemicals. The 553 foot chimney survived, and still stands to this day.

(facing north) Moving west we arrive at the eastern edge of Southside. When the Southside Airport first opened in 1968, it was seen as a great achievement for the city, during a time when commercial flight had become incredibly popular. The adjacent strip of land just south of Wilberforce Harbour was the perfect place for hotels, shops and offices, to cater to all the new arrivals at the airport as well as the extra money and commerce it brought to the city. This pic is centered on Southside East Station, the smaller of the two stations that serve Southside. This is the one furthest from the airport, and so when the airport was open it wasn't as busy as Southside West. To this day it continues to serve the residents and businesses in the area. There is also a metro station here, one of three that make up Kanalka City's Southwestern Line.

(facing north) Southside is bisected by the M105 Motorway, as it heads west past the harbour and out of the city. You can see Junction 8A in the top-right of the image. The northern half is primarily commercial, while the southern half is made up mostly of apartments. There is a very wide variety in the size and style of the buildings here, mainly due to the poor urban planning and unregulated development of Southside. When the Airport was first built the city was eager to sell of all the nearby real estate to the highest bidder without any regulation or consultation. This means that there are luxury apartments and government-issue tower blocks side-by-side, as well as a huge mix of shops and offices. This gives Southside an extremely varied and diverse feel to it.

(facing north) Further west we see a large number of small prefabricated blocks built in the early 2000's to replace housing lost in the Tsunami, as well as a surviving complex of tower blocks built in the 1960's. The grassy area below used to be a sheltered beach between Southside and the Airport, but after the Tsunami the area fell into disrepair and the beach turned into a swamp. There used to be stairs leading down, but the Airport and its surroundings have been closed off to the public since 1991, and the stairs have been removed.

(facing south) Here we can see a prime example of the uncontrolled development in Southside and the resulting diversity. A luxury hotel, built next to a strip club, built next to a library built next to a Solar Power Station. Only in Kanalka City will you find a combination like that.

(facing south) The latest development to take place in Southside is the appropriately named Southside Towers, a commercial development that will become the tallest commercial triple-tower complex in K.C., and second tallest overall after the Three Kings Apartments in Downtown. Across the road is a contemporary apartment complex built in 2015, and behind the construction site is the Barrierland Mainline.

(facing north) This is Southside West Station, the main transport hub for the area. Built in 1968 to directly serve the airport, it has a metro station, as well as bus services to Kanalka City International Airport, which is located nearly two miles to the west. This larger airport, opened in 2016 now serves the city and surrounding towns, and Southside Station provides direct links to it. This is one of the reasons that Southside hasn't gone into decline, as the shops and offices are still within easy reach of the airport thanks to the Rail and Motorway links. Next to the station you can see a midrise business hotel.

(facing north) Near the western end of Southside is the tallest building in the area. Known as the Airport Avenue Tower, today it provides cheap office space for low-wealth businesses. Behind it is Junction 9 of the M105. In the bottom left of the image you can see that RipRap has been placed across Airport Avenue to keep traffic out.

(facing east) At the western end of Southside is a small industrial area. Originally, this area was comprised mostly of businesses that served the Deltan Navy, or Wilberforce Harbour directly, but since the opening of K.C. International Airport, which has cargo terminal much large than that of the old airport, the Industrial area has expanded.

(facing north) Moving across to Southside Airport, we start at the northwest corner, where the Imperial Military has set up a training centre at the abandoned airport. Southside Airport was built on a large, rectangular area of reclaimed land, on the seaward side of the Barrier Islands. While this means that the island could be placed closer to the city, it also meant that it was more vulnerable to storms and coastal flooding, which became a harsh reality, when the airport was devastated by the 1991 Tsunami, which was the reason for abandoning the airport. The training centre was built on an area of empty land which was being reserved should another terminal be needed. A simple concrete bridge was built to provide access to the centre, as well as gates connecting to the main airport road as well as one leading directly to the taxiways. The training centre was needed to train soldiers in coastal warfare after the Hasbury Sea Fort was also destroyed by the Tsunami.

(facing north) Moving along we come to the Main Terminal. At the time of construction it was the longest terminal building in the world. However it was oversized and the interior was poorly designed, and had a lack of windows meaning that lighting costs were high. The hotel and wholesale shopping centre opposite the terminal are dilapidated but still standing after 92 years, sheltered from the destructive waves by the enormous terminal building. These two structures are used for indoor combat training, as well as the terminal building. To the top left you can see where part of the road and parking area have collapsed into the water, as the swamp behind the airport slowly encroaches on the airport. You can also see the grassy areas of the airport have become overgrown, and the grass is starting to claim the tarmac of the gate areas.

(facing north) Further along, we can see one of the planes has smashed through part of the terminal building. Most of the planes were washed back out as the Tsunami retreated, but some still litter the airport as well as the swamps behind. What was once a small channel of water lined with beaches and small pleasure craft is now an overgrown swamp. Coastal Swamps are quick to spread to any area that has little or no current and is sheltered from the open sea. Next to the collapsed area is what used to be the main taxi rank and bus stop of the airport, where Airport Shuttles would transport thousands of people every day. While the terminal looks relatively new, it was almost white when built, but has faded to a dull grey. It was built to be mostly elevated above ground, so damage was less extensive that on other buildings in the airport.

(facing north) Next to the Taxi Rank is Northumbria Park, named after the two Northumbria Bombers that occupy the airport's greenspace. These bombers were the largest and most powerful bombers that Deltania had built during the early 1940's, and helped the allies push forward and reclaim precious territory in many theatres across the world. Here it's only a matter of time before one of these bombers falls into the swamp, and joins the numerous other planes resting at the bottom of what is now known as Southside Swamp.

(facing north) Moving further east we arrive at the small cargo centre that served Southside, which is slowly being overrun by the numerous plant species that inhabit the island. Here we can see another part of collapsed land, with a cargo plane and private jet slowly decaying in the putrid swamp. (I know a lot of these buildings don't looked wrecked, but until someone makes a pack of ruined planes and warehouses, I'm a bit stuck. Also an MMP pack of wrecked vehicles would come in handy)

(facing west) At the east end of the Airport is the Storage Hangars, or what's left of them. Many of the smaller hangars have been washed away, while the larger hangar becomes more and more unstable as the land around it slowly collapses into the swamp. Here you can see that the sea is also washing away the airport, as evidenced by this small cove created by the destruction of the seawalls.

(facing north) While small parts of the airport are being slowly consumed by the swamp growth, the sea has had a far more extensive effect on the airport, as parts of the runway are now being washed away. The entire unprotected south-facing side of the island is exposed to the full force of the Catalan Sea, and today nothing is left of the seawalls on the south side of the airport. The many loose rocks leftover from the seawall have provided the perfect conditions for the growth of coral reefs.

(facing north) Although the newly formed coral reef provides some protection for the beaches and calm water behind it, it's not extensive enough to completely shield the island, and so erosion continues at a slow but steady rate. Here we can see another stranded plane left to fall apart on the beach or get washed away in the next major storm.

(facing north) Today the runway and taxiways have become completely overgrown, and are littered with rocks and debris. The entire island is closed to the public, and is the property of the Deltan Military, who use the entire island for training their soldiers, not just the buildings.

(facing east) Lying in the centre of Southside Airport is an unlikely sight. The Brinehammer was a small oil tanker that was launched in 1975. On the day of the Tsunami it had left the Port of Delta City and passed through the Hasbury Passage, en route to the city of Argentum Bay to the West. It was a mile and a half due south of Southside Airport when the Tsunami sent it north, smashing through the seawalls and finally coming to a stop just short of the main taxiway. Its huge size prevented it from being carried far across the airport, had it hit the terminal the damage could have been far worse. Fortunately, the tanker was empty at the time, and so there was no oil spillage, as it was heading to Argentum Bay for minor repairs.

(facing north) Zooming out you can see how far the Brinehammer was sent across the island by the Tsunami's devastating waves. This has created a large, sheltered lagoon behind the coral reef. As the decades pass the vegetation will completely cover the airport, and if left alone, coastal Barrier Forest may establish itself on the island, and after a century or so, the airport may just become completely connected to the Barrier Islands or just completely washed away or turned into swampland.

(facing south) On the western side of the island we can see some marshy areas further inland, as well as a small commuter jet stranded in the boggy marshes.

(facing north) An overview of the western half. Here you can see the bouys surrounding the island that designate the restricted zone surrounding the airport. You can also see the original concrete bridge that people used to get on and off the island, which is now surrounded by overgrown swamps and blocked off by rocks.

(facing north) And to finish off, an overview of the east side of the island.

Well I hoped you enjoyed this big update, as always constructive criticism is always welcome. Next time we'll most likely be visiting the south-east tile of Kanalka City, where you will find the rich and poor living almost side-by-side. See you then! ;D ;D

Cool idea and very well executed. I love the stranded ship.
It seems that a certain small green car is trying to cross the rip rap on airport avenue.  ;D

Hello again, time for an update! So Kanalka City's South-East tile isn't ready yet, so instead we're going to have a look at the Kanalka Bay Bridge and its surroundings, which I was originally going to show at a later date. Anyway, now for the replies:

Wow! This is skillfully executed!

Thanks, I must admit it took a while to plan and make, but I'm glad the result was worth it. ;D

To be honest, I never thought of numbering my pictures, but I'll do that from now on if it helps, starting now. :)

I never noticed that before. :D I hope that car transforms into a monster truck, it's going to need some BIG wheels to get over those rocks. :D

And now the pictures...

1. (facing north) We start off in North Point, which as its name suggests is the northernmost part of Kanalka City. The North Point Agricultural Complex is an example of farming in the late 21st Century. While it doesn't take up much room, the facility has extensive underground caverns that grow all sorts of crops for general consumption. While many traditional farms remain in the Empire, most farming, particularly with the supermarkets and larger food companies is done in these high-tech facilities.

2. (facing north) Near the tip of North Point are two large office towers, surrounded by numerous smaller offices that have taken advantage of North Point's low-cost land, before this primarily industrial area of K.C. is turned into a sea of high-end shops, luxury apartments and expensive offices. The tower on the left is the regional headquarters of Aesir Real Estate, a large firm based in Thorland. They are the third largest real estate and property developers in the Empire, after Carver Development Co. and Palmacre. The building was constructed in 2030. The building on the right is much older, being built in 1962 as an R&D Centre for the General Metals Manufacturing Company. GMM was founded in 1823 as the Steel Industry in counties like Kingsland, New Blackwater, Bretton and Mancunia started to Boom. The company's goal was to provide enormous quantities of high-quality steel for all manner of uses.

3. (facing west) Slightly east of the office towers are where the majority of the apartments are located. Also in this picture we can see the Southern Approach to the Kanalka Bay Bridge, as the M169 leaves Kanalka City before making its way across the swamps towards Delta City. The prefab shops located next to the bridge approach were originally built to house the construction of some of the bridge components, to save money on transport costs. Once the bridge was completed, the warehouses were converted into cheap retail space and leased out to help pay for the cost of the bridge's construction.

4. (facing north) On the other side of the Southern Approach, seperated from the shops and offices, this part of North Point is still entirely industrial. Here we can see a gas refinery and storage facility, which stands out due to the large red chimney, which is the tallest structure in North Point.

5. (facing west) The Kanalka Bay Bridge. An impressive sight, from both the land and the sea. This gigantic structure is still a marvel of engineering, several decades after its construction. Its 6650-foot span makes it by far the longest-span suspension bridge in the world. It crosses the 2-mile wide western entrance to Kanalka Bay, from which the bridge gets its name. Construction started in the late 1980's, as the ferry services at the time were inadequate, and the Politicians in Kanalka City wanted a permanent road link to the mainland to help fuel the Barrierland Economy, which at the time was somewhat isolated from the rest of the country. Construction stared in 1986, but when the Tsunami hit, and the Great Depression soon after, the project was abandoned. Only one half-finished tower and the concrete foundations for the towers were built. However, by the late 2000's when the economy had picked up again, construction quickly resumed, and the bridge opened in 2010. It carries six lanes of the M169 Motorway, and provides a direct link from Kanalka City and Delta City. When Barrierland becomes a separate county, the Bridge will straddle the border.

6. (facing north) We have now crossed the soon-to-be county border into Brentland, one of the 10 founding counties of Deltania, or 11, as many Barrierlanders consider the Barrier Islands as the 11th founding county. This is the Northern Approach to the bridge, situated near the tip of the Southpoint Swamp. Because of the low-lying, unstable ground of the Southpoint Swamp, this approach is much thicker and more reinforced than the Southern Approach. This helps protect against coastal flooding, storm surges, earth tremors, shifting swamps and even military attacks. Nearby is a campsite which is often used by schools, colleges and nature groups, where you can experience first hand the abundant plant life, the serene calmness of the swamp's waterways, the rubbish thrown off the approach by careless motorists, and the noxious swamp gas.

7. (facing north) Less than a mile to the west of the bridge is one of many swamp settlements situated along Brentland's Coastal Swamps. Hennigan's Point was originally founded in 1904, as a fishing village and an alligator hunting community, it flourished until the Tsunami of 1991, when it was completely washed away. The village was rebuilt in the 2000's, and continues to thrive on the crawfish industry.

8. (facing north) Located at the southern tip of the swamps is the Southpoint Lighthouse. Built in 1888, the lighthouse helped ships travelling through Kanalka Bay avoid the dangerous waters around the swamp. However, since the construction of the Bridge which is well-lit, the lighthouse hasn't been needed. Instead, it's rented out to those who need a quiet, isolated retreat.

9. (facing east) To finish off, a night pic of the North Point Incinerator. When it first switched on in 2014, it was one of the cleanest incinerators in the world, thanks to the most advanced waste disposal technology available at the time being used in its construction and operation. It is still in use to this day, and currently processes about 80% of Kanalka City's Waste.

Well that's it for this update, as always constructive criticism is always accepted and appreciated, and don't forget to leave a comment. See you next time! ;D ;D

Nice little bridge you got there. Is it toll-free?

Great work with the swamp again, too.
