We've all had this problem.  You want to make a RHW curve 90 degrees with those amazing curve pieces.. But what?  Why is there a RHW-2 in the middle of my curve? Why Can't I override it?  What can I do?

What can you do?  Follow this guide!  ;)  I will show you how to make smooth 90 degree curves without getting the RHW-2 in the middle.  In this guide, I will show two examples of how to do this.  Use the method that suits you or your surroundings best!

Example 1.  Placing the smooth curves in an existing sharp curve.

Making a curve this way is pretty straightforward.  Just plop the smooth curve puzzle piece on top of your sharper curves.

Let's try it for a RHW with a two tile median.  Here is what the turn looks like beforehand:

1.  Delete the inner curve.

2.  Drag a new RHW to join the two segments.

3.  Plop the "RHW-4 inner curve" puzzle piece on the two spots.

and

Pause. Voila!  You have your first smooth 90 degree curve!  Now its time to do the other side (the outer curve).

5.  Again, demolish the existing turns.

6.  Join the two segments and plop the "RHW-4 outer curve" puzzle piece on the two spots.
\

You're done!  This is the finished product:

Example 2:  Making a 90 degree curve from scratch.

For this example I will only show how to make a curve with just one direction of the RHW.  Once you learn how to do it once, it can be easily repeated for the other side!

1.  Place your curve.

2.  Extend the RHW-2 network for a few tiles.

3.  Make the RHW-2 turn out of its diagonal state.

4.  Place a RHW-4 starter piece on this new orthogonal segment.  It should override most of the RHW-2.

5.  Override the remaining RHW-2 by re-dragging the network.

Pause.  This is what the network should look like now.  At this state, you can choose to curve your diagonal RHW 90 degrees or back to the direction it was before the curve.  This can be applied for an inner or outer curve.  Since this about 90 degree curves, I will continue to curve it 90 degrees.

6.  Delete the starter piece segment.  You should be left with this:

8.  Make the RHW sharply curve the last 45 degrees of the turn.

9.  Plop the "RHW-4 outer curve" puzzle piece on the sharp curve.

Your done!  This is the finished product:  a smooth 90 degree RHW curve!

Anyways, I hope you found these guides useful!  Have fun making 90 degree curves!

Excellent trick, and an excellent tutorial too. I really like the last pic too, the curve is perfectly done. Great work.

I just wanted to let everyone know that this guide will be fully compatible with RHW 3.0  when it comes out.  No extra tricks are needed.

What I've heard is that this tutorial, as useful as it is with what we have available right now, will be obsolete with RHW v3.0. But with you being a NAM team associate, you probably know more about it than me. ;)
My days here are numbered. It's been great and I've had a lot of fun, but I've moved on to bigger and better things.

nerdly_dood:  No, that is not correct.  You will still have to use this tutorial for RHW 3.0 if you want to make 90 degree curves.  No additional work will be made on smooth curves for RHW 3.0, but possibly future releases.

Why don't you post a tut on how to make a RHW 6S and RHW 8 90 degree curve?

io_bg

Probably because there aren't any smooth curves for RHW 6S and 8.

That's correct.  Plus, their puzzle pieces, you just need to plop them in place.  No tutorial required for that!

Excellent tutorial, Haljackey.

Thanks to this, plus your RHW Intersections tutorial, my city's RHW Construction Unit will never go out of work.  ;D

Even though RHW 4.0 is here, this guide will still be compatible with the latest RHW version.

There is, however, an easier way to make curves in RHW 4.0, by using the new filler pieces. This will avoid the need to override your networks with RHW-4 in the middle of the turn.

Here is a small walkthrough:

The problem still persists. You have one tile of diagonal RHW-2 in your RHW-4 90 degree curves.

Select the diagonal RHW-4 filler piece. This can be found in the RHW starter pieces tab in the highways menu. Press tab until you find it and rotate it in the correct direction.

Plop the pieces. Make sure the white and yellow lines match to ensure a proper connection.

And you're done! It's that simple.

This should solve some issues people have with 90 degree RHW-4 curves. Hope you're all enjoying RHW 4.0!

The new RHW version fortunally made that problem easier to solve  ;)

It sure does, but the problem remains. You still cannot curve a RHW smoothly 90 degrees simply by plopping the curve pieces. It won't take new users long to figure this out. :P

Apparently a 9x9 90 degree RHW-4 curve may be in the works, and we now have a 90 degree MIS curve, so that's progress I guess.

If anyone has questions about the guide, or RHW curves in general, feel free to ask them here.

The curved RHW puzzle pieces you can plop over the curved RHW piece is useful info.  That problem always bugged me and it's nice to know there's a simplistically simple solution to it. ;D  Oh, and I am having a blast with the new mod
