The NAM Team is pleased to have the opportunity to showcase our latest developments for the upcoming NAM Version 31 release in the "Of Special Interest This Month" (OSITM) section at SimCity 4 Devotion for the month of November 2012.

This month is a particularly special one for both SimCity 4 Devotion and the NAM Team.  It marks 6 years since the opening of SimCity 4 Devotion, a site which, at its core mission, sought to foster custom content creators, by providing them with ample space and freedom to collaborate and showcase development.  SC4 Devotion, since the very outset, has been especially supportive of the NAM Team, and we are honored to be able to help ring in Year 6 here in OSITM.  This month also marks the 7th anniversary of the first release of one of the NAM Team's flagship projects.  On November 16, 2005, NAM Team Emeritus qurlix released the initial public alpha of what was then called the Rural Highway Mod, or RHW.  Today, it is known as the RealHighway system, and it is still very much in active development today.

We would like to thank the OSITM Committee, for selecting us to play this role during a major milestone in the site's history, and to all who have supported the NAM Team over all these years.  We have a lot of new developments to share with you over this next month and beyond, which we hope you will find exciting.  And remember--we like to surprise people . . .

-Tarkus and the entire NAM Team

It may be a '?', but I'm assuming it's good. ;)

By the way, the initial release of the RHW mod was one of the main reasons I joined the SC4 community. Lurked since 2004, got the first RHW build the moment it became public, registered not long after that :).

Well, I'll answer a little bit of the "?" part of it.  Here's one of the many things lurking in the RealHighway P57 effort that hasn't yet met the public eye.  You can thank jondor for putting these models together.

It amazes me when I read that many still do not use RHW and opt to still use MHW these days.

Yes the NAM team did great updating the MHW yrs ago with the prefab interchanges which vastly improved the functionality and looks of MHW, but nothing made SC4 better then the RHW imo.

I was one of those people who despised the RHW initially, because of the issues that still plague it, like the pieces snapping together if you drag out the wrong side first, or the slope intolerance it has, but it has made it so much easier to make cities fit the way you want(like having a 5 lane loop corridor around the central downtown area), which you can't do with MHW or having multiple on/off ramps from a single exit/entrance MIS ramp.

I wish I could remember who it was from the NAM team who I had sent a PM to years ago in a foul mood after having yet another issue with RHW who sent me a response of "whoa buddy calm down and do it this way" response and ever since I have loved the RHW  lol.

The NAM team definitely deserves this honor, and I will always be appreciative for what they have done for this game over the years.  I have always thought its a shame that EA/Maxis never even considered hiring some of these people to work on an expansion/new version of the game for transit capabilities, considering how much time and effort they have put into this game making it way better than I think EA/Maxis ever intended.

Don't know if I've ever shared this, but here goes. A few months ago I was creating a fresh completely no-plugins region to test some new mods I was working on, taking everything out of my Plugins folder. I needed a somewhat developed city to get any useful data on my mods, so I started laying out a new city. I wasn't even 5 minutes into laying out roads in my test city and in frustration closed the game and promptly put NAM back in my Plugins. I realized I had been playing with NAM for so long, I had forgotten just how little the game offered without it and how dependent I had become on NAM to give shape to my cities.

So, with recently newfound appreciation for everything NAM has done for so long, a very hearty congratulations!  &apls

Smooth curves are definitely a nice thing to have, and they're on the long-term list, but it's very unlikely you'll see the L1 RHW-3 and RHW-6S getting them this release.  One thing at a time.  The main thing to take away from that is that those particular elevated networks now have diagonals.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone--more surprises are on their way . . . ;)

Can't believe it's been so long...

But with the NAM team being the special guest this time, it seems like something "big" is fixin' to happen soon. For me, this is becoming oddly-similiar to the Team Fortress 2 forums before a major update comes out like "Meet the Medic", "Meet the Pyro", or "Mann vs. Machine" o_0

Anyways, we just have to wait and see.

No. We're taste-testing condiments. :P

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_57

Disclaimer: Any sort of numeric coincidences are exactly that: Coincidental. P57 (as it's abbreviated) simply refers to the IID range the new RHW is using: 0x57000000 to 0x57FFFFFF.

Though, in a way, I suppose we're "nuking" the old IID scheme, so it fits in that regard.

Edit: Oh, and some DxD action . . . DxD setups involving two RHWs are infamously touchy, and I'm still trying to get this to fully behave, but it's getting there.

Required a lot of odd stability code to pull that off, due to the screwiness of same-base network DxD setups involving overrides.

Worked on its big brother . . . these are fiendishly difficult to pull off on the RUL side, so I wouldn't call them "stable" per se.

This one looks even better  ;D  (Diagonal) RHW-8C is a very exciting network for me as it could eventually facilitate diagonal type-D, -E, and -F ramps for the beautiful diagonal RHW-6C. Speaking of which, I hope Daniel will be showing up for the party this month  :)

Will there be concrete "jersey barriers" on the diagonal 6C or is that not feasible/possible?

Yeah, the median strip would be a great addition to the diagonal C class RHW.

Great work on the diagonal RHW 8-C with the RHW 2!  :)

We don't have the prop finished for the C-type diagonals yet--it is planned, but you probably won't be seeing any barriers, pillars/supports/pylons, and other minor cosmetic details until closer to the end of the development cycle.

You can either blame or thank Jondor for that; He designed the extra-wide turn radius, as with the models needed for it.
Title: Re: NAM Team's Super Special Thread for the month of November!!
Post by: jondor on November 08, 2012, 11:22:23 PM
Yup, those two tile S and three tile C networks were impossible to squeeze entirely into the footprint of the normal Ortho-diag transition alone.  I did the math and trying to make the turn that tight not only looks horrible, but actually places the origin of the circle very nearly within the roadway!  %wrd  Not exactly freeway spec.

So instead, I sacrificed one orthogonal and two diagonal tiles and gave you all a not quite wide radius curve with perfectly contoured barriers to match.

To give you guys a little bit of an idea of what I've been up to:  I just delivered the NAM Team a (nearly) complete set of RHW models of every network RHW-2 all the way up to RHW-12S and 10C at L0-L2 (and L3 and L4 where applicable) including each and every network crossing each and every other network; Maxis, GLR, HSR, RAM, RHW, and NWM (with some minor exceptions to be filled in at a later date) OxO, OxD, DxO and DxD.

13.6 megabytes after compression, 16320 models in all.  Thankfully, only the first set and the base pieces for each network were compiled by hand.  The rest were generated programmatically in Java.

Vince designed the original ERHW-6C spec with that gap.  I believe it was so you could see the network underneath on underpasses, a way of visually checking to make sure the overrides worked.

Also, since Project 57 is also apparently a nuclear test, involving . . . shall we say, "secret weapons"?  Enjoy . . .

Wow very nice

I am extremely happy to see that the work is already done and the first secret weapons. Keep it up Alex, the more you show us, the happier we feel. I can not boast jondor's perfect for his discovery on recreating new models. I guess they could easily be used for ENWM in the near future, will only need to change textures and paths. Can you say that you already have an alpha build 5 or still too early for that?

Thanks! ;)  It took quite a lot of calculations to get that all put together.  All of the curve models were done geometrically using nothing but Excel and the Reader.

Here's a wireframe shot of an early version of the ground level 6C in the Reader:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedwarfers.net%2Fotherstuff%2Frandom%2Fsc4%2F6C%2520wireframe.png&hash=7a45a029b3251f5a1940a5400f3982ebd00bef56)

The early draft seen here was intended to use overlays for the dashes, until I came up with a better UV-mapping that uses nothing but a single, full-width orthogonal texture.  Tricky, but the end result was well worth it.

Glad to hear you're okay . . . that's a decent-sized quake.  First one I experienced was the 1993 Scotts Mills Quake (the so-called "Spring Break Quake"), which was a 5.6.  Fortunately, we had just done an earthquake drill in school, so I was well-prepared.  Definitely a weird sensation.

I was referring more to the Alpha Build, not the release, in which case it's not so much "adding" as much as "finishing implementation".  We already have a fairly strong sense of what will be going in there, though it's possible there might be a couple little things that make it in, which won't significantly impact the amount of time spent preparing the release.

We've actually tried to set Christmas as a "target date" before.  Why do you think we've ended up with so many January releases? ::)

As far as FLEX S-Curves, they're definitely under consideration, but not for this release.

By the looks of things i take it you still have to do the menus, right? I made a suggestion on ST before, you can use a modified version (I know regular interchanges won't work with Symphony but that's how I think you should set the order exemplars if possible)

QuoteOkay, an idea:
List the buttons like this:
RHW itself, Draggable network
RHW Starters/Fillers
RHW Ramps/Transitions(FLEXRamps should keep things a bit smaller. If not, keep the two separate)
Smooth Curves
FARHW
Cosmetic Pieces
NC Pieces
DDRHW Pieces
GHW
EHW
Parallel & Perpendicular ramps, Maxis default
Single-side GHW Ramps
Single-Side EHW Ramps
Tbone & Cloverleaf Interchanges, Maxis default
Custom Interchanges
Symphony
Controller Version

Yeeeah,...

That kind of thing is set by RUL-0, and I personally see no need to deviate any farther than what we already have.

As I stated before, that's already the order things already exist in for RHW (except for DDRHW, which will likely be with the starters). MHW items will still be left untouched, especially since there's a way to disable the MHW interchange buttons.

There's also a good possibility that due to "secret weapons" and such, we'll be able to reduce the number of buttons on the RHW side.  "Secret Weapon #1" alone accomplishes with one FLEX puzzle piece what would have required at least 30 conventional puzzle pieces.

This isn't a 'secret weapon' and some people at Simtropolis have seen it before, but here's a small something new that should be making it into the next NAM.
This isn't an override, these are ploppable puzzle pieces that are used like this to demonstrate that they can be plopped over existing intersections.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Fjdenm8%2FRAM%2F2012-07-02_00001.jpg&hash=04f17c9168001603394b96193f5a3f8cd04cb2be)
(Click to enlarge, there's also a OxO piece, not pictured)

At the moment it's just Road (No OWR or Avenue just yet), but that may change in the future as I get more time to do this.

Well, I would break up the Cosmetic Pieces into about three tabs (for single tile, dual tile and triple tile networks). Since there are 192 of them stuffed up in on TAB-Ring (112 more than in the current version), this ring is practically endless and a hassle to work with...

I series for something clever, but I'm sure that you thought about this idea. It's about more functionality with fewer puzzle pieces and lighter rotating rings. So with Fly FLEX technology can create pieces as high L-1 (7m) for any network and must be exactly 3 pieces. In 1 tile intersection of two tiles and three tiles crossings. Which means that this Flex Fly piece of length 1 tile for RHW -2 could be applied over: rails, street, road, NRD-4, OWR -1, OWR -2, OWR -3 and AVE-2, TLA-3 and ARD but also to all one - tiles RHW networks. Similarly piece for RHW -2 and length two tiles will be placed above all AVE-4 two tiles NWM and RHW networks.
In general I think you grasped my point and you would be helpful ..

SA's been occupied with RL as of late.  He's passed along some FARHW stuff he had laying around, which will be in the next release, but I don't know how those other pieces fare at present.

The RHW's current widest network gets a little "boost" . . .

It's worth noting that 7 years ago today, at 1:59pm PST (UTC-8), what was then called Version 0.12 of the Rural Highway Mod was released.

This was a stretch of the very first RHW I ever built . . . in the days before I even used a slope mod.

It's crazy how much things have changed.

Some preliminary results from my experimentation with this:

That entailed creating two circles and splicing them together.

Any thoughts on turning the texture into a puzzle piece? With no FA or WR options 8S could definitely benefit from a bit of flexibility

Oh gosh. I've been a lurker for so long. I keep loosing my accounts though but I've always needed to make new ones to get to the mods. I have been incubating an idea for a MD for a while. But the NAM overhaul seemed like something I should wait for. It went by so many names, I was worried it was too large a project and may take a long time. And I totally get that volunteers should not have to deal with deadlines but it still ate me up inside.

Then SC13 was announced and at first I was sooooo excited. But then I realized that even if glass box is all that it is said to be, it would take a while for SC13 to get modded up with the flexibility and cosmetics that I would want. That is when I feared that the SC4 modding community might die out and move over to SC13. What then should happen to SC4? And NAM 31?

I'm so glad that this looks like it'll come out soon. But I hope most of all that this is a sign from devs like the NAM  team that SC4 modding will be alive and kicking even after SC13 is released. Cos NAM 31 introduces a revamped system. And you don't put effort into a whole new system unless you think it'll be worth it in the long run. And for that there has to be a long run outlook. And for that I am glad!

Thank you NAM team for all your past work. But most of all thank you for your future work!

My guess without looking at everyone else's: RHW(?), NWM, TuLEPs, PS, ( ? ? ? ), RaBETs, Pedmalls, ( ? ? ? ), CanAM, RAM, Tram, HSR, Tunnels/FLUPs, Bridges, Dual-Networking, FAN, Traffic Simulator, Version Marker.

I stated in our private dev thread about an icon system that isn't a simple picture of what the buttons contained. Did you seriously fulfil that? ;D

I still think the in-game menu icons deserve to be a combination of the old button system (which I think is insufficient in describing what's what) and what you had.

Yes and no. Yes, because it's a wide-radius curve (kinda). No, because it's draggable.

Long story short, it's because of Jondor. He didn't like how squashed the original ortho-diag assembly looked like using a small footprint, so he made a bigger one, and everyone else agreed on it.

7.5 meter is the new normal.  You can also get 15, 22.5, and 30 meters--choose your flavor.  Sprinkles?

Ridiculously awesome progress.  And I love, love, LOVE the curves.  I've always thought you guys should make them just a little smoother.  I think you should do the same thing for MIS (and you would't really have to sacrifice an extra tile because it's so narrow)

We don't do release dates or timelines for release, so it might come out this year, or it might not.  It ultimately depends on how development in the remaining weeks of 2012 goes.  If it's ready, we'll release it, and if it's not, we won't.  Simple as that. $%Grinno$%

As far as what you saw on the livestream, you'll have to wait to find out what that really was.

7.5 meter is the new normal.  You can also get 15, 22.5, and 30 meters--choose your flavor.  Sprinkles?

I should remind you guys of overall dev:

L0, L1, and L2 versions of the MIS, RHW-2, RHW-3, RHW-4, 6S, 8S, 10S, 12S, 6C, 8C, and 10C networks are all planned, with 12S and 10C likely to be for a future release. In other words, all networks are being given L1 (7.5m) networks, and any network that doesn't have an L2 version (15m) will be given one.

L3 and L4 (22.5m and 30m) is strictly reserved for MIS, RHW-4, and 6S, because anything wider would be too uncommon to be elevated further than L2, and we literally cannot accommodate L3 and L4 crossings into the IID scheme. Well, we theoretically could, but that would mean doing everything all over again, which we can't afford to do at this point.

The curves you're seeing for the S-networks are draggable.

-----

Something that's also somewhat relevant is preparing your terrain mod to be P57-ready. For those who have a DJEM (Diagonal Jagged Edges Mod), you'll know that it's to make diagonal sunken highways to be less jagged, but if you've ever taken the time to notice, it only works for the soon-to-be phased out standard of 15 meters.

There's a way to make it work for as low as 7.5 meters:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F6523%2Fcapturedjemtutorial.jpg&hash=04b38254cfff57d17c5cb37cd76e858faf510afc)

Open up the Reader, then open up your DJEM or terrain mod. Locate the Exemplar file shown above, then change the value "MaxNormalYForCliff" to 0.95. The reader will round down, but that won't matter. Save and exit, and your terrain mod/DJEM should now be ready for 7.5-meter sunken highways.

Hold up.

Won't this also effect the natural terrain?  IIRC, this value effects at what degree slope the terrain goes from showing terrain textures to rock textures.  For instance Gobias has this value set at .65 and Lowkee at .77.  For building on a flat map i don't suppose it would matter but if there's any kind of natural features in your cities, like coastal cliffs or prominent hills (think Rio) this will probably change how your landscape works.  I'd recommend testing that first.  Just a thought...

Well, a higher MaxNormalYForCliff results in more frequent appearance of the cliff textures. It might not turn out badly, though, depending on what kind of map you use.

Well, that's the side effect (or rather, the basis) of how a DJEM works, anyway; The cliff "shape" is better suited for placing highway wall lots, whereas a lower MNYFC value would just make diagonal sunken highways horrifically jagged.

I would say no.  I would think that Y cliff values as high as .95 would result in a large portion of your landscape being rock textures (especially if the terrain's bumpy or hilly).  It's a 5 second fix using the Reader so I'd leave it at a more reasonable default value.

I think my personal plan will be simply to make all diagonal sunken highways with walls down at 15 meters.

To those reluctant or sceptic to how I came up with such a strict value, hear me out on this:

I've already tested the 0.95 MNYFC value, and have had it in effect for months, even before P57 was even conceived. Plus, I've tried other values, and 0.95 was the only value that worked.

The biggest visual change out of doing so was that it actually makes your terrain feel taller than it would otherwise. Think about it; It's only just now that the development of 7.5-meter networks has gone into full gear, and if you've done the time to do the math, 15 meters (that's already with the 30% height compensation) is nearly 50 feet. You can squeeze another deck between that.

7.5-meter height differences using a 15-meter DJEM will actually make 7.5-meter networks feel squashed, and Daniel (Shadow Assassin) once showed an interchange using 7.5-meter overpass pieces, but no 7.5-meter DJEM. My first impression: That's too squashed.

With the visual effect that a 7.5-meter DJEM would induce, a 15-meter DJEM would then be conceived as being too tall. Thing is, that's been the standard for elevated for years, so it would appear blasphemous to go so low.

I've had an old city that I had left undeveloped, but it was saved while it had a 15-meter DJEM in effect. I re-saved it using a 7.5-meter DJEM, and found almost no difference.

BEFORE:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg203%2F8969%2Fcapturepredjemregion.jpg&hash=51fd02fa07854dfb77b2ab42dbc10434e4d05e2e)

AFTER:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg607%2F8238%2Fcapturepostdjemregion.jpg&hash=ad173824df37c525731dacca940736222b07adf8)

Of course, this is using rather shallow mountains, so the effects of a DJEM would be more apparent on a much steeper mountain. Then again, a 15-meter DJEM would do even more apparent damage to a region with NO DJEM than a 7.5-meter DJEM would do to a 15-meter DJEM region.

Here's a better comparison:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg694.imageshack.us%2Fimg694%2F913%2Fcaptureheightcomparison.jpg&hash=79311a45e63a2d43b1f94959a8756c9980f2821b)

See how tall 15 meters is now?

Now before you go tell me to change a tried-and-tested value, I would advise you to try it for yourself. Rather, consider it beta-testing, or in this context, alpha-testing.

(I've actually been analysing, and have modded, some of the properties in terrain mods for quite a while now and found that things such as sea level mods, DJEMs, extent-of-beach mods (how far a beach extends from the shore), and water transparency mods all rely on the same exemplar (the Terrain Mod exemplar itself), and that if you try to mix and match several of these, then it all falls to bits when you load up a city. It's effectively the same as loading up multiple terrain mods at once: The last one gets loaded. Trust me, I found out the hard way, so I know where I'm coming from with this.)

I'm not questioning the validity of a 7.5m sunken highway, or the dimensioning involved, or your math.  Indeed, a 50 foot hole for a sunken highway is ridiculous.  I also agree that because of sc4's scaling, a 7.5m sunken hole looks like nothing, despite it being a much more realistic height.  My concern is the drastic visual effect on the terrain that will come from cranking MNYFC to .95, so i took your suggestion and did some testing.

Let's go to the San Francisco pier.  Appalacian with a MNYFC of .77: (click for full)

Here's what happens when we change it to .95:

Now granted that's not a huge change; those two hills on the bottom only have cliff textures popping up around their base's, but it's not an improvement.

Let's move up the coast a little bit.  San Francisco's waterfront a couple tiles north at .77:

More of the waterfront.  Here we have an actual hill on the top worthy of the name, and a bump on the bottom that is barely there at all.  At. .95:

Hmm... That hill is now almost completely cliff, and what was once a little bump on the bottom now has a ridiculous ribboning around it's base.  That's not what i'd call an improvement.

Let's move north of the golden gate bridge a couple tiles and find one with a minimal amount of hills compared to it's neighbors.  Again at .77:

And at .95:

Yuck!  And that is what is going to happen to any map that isn't flat like a pancake:  You're either going to have flat land or rock textures and it will look bad, essentially trading one realism for another (and these were moderate hills at worst, not something like Hong Kong).  Also notice offshore that a cliff suddenly appears.  Changing the MNYFC makes that first slope cross the threshold to pop rock textures.  That slope is there because of the technique drunkapple uses when putting water on his maps, and since he uses the same technique, that offshore cliff will also pop up along the whole coast on every single one of his maps that has water.

If someone wants to make that tradeoff then that's their choice and perfectly fine, but i'd hesitate to recommend everyone go ahead with such a drastic change to their terrain mods unless they're building in the netherlands.  I think i'll pass on using 7.5m for my sunken highways until there's a BATed embankment  that will cover the jagged edge rather than screwing up my terrain.

Just a thought.

Epicblunder demonstrated what I said perfectly.  I've always been big on the whole "15-meters-is-unrealistically-tall" idea, but it really doesn't look that bad in the game, and I'll take that over those ugly rock textures on every little slope.  I'll be leaving my Y cliff value at .85.

Besides, the only thing you have to avoid is diagonal sunken highways at 7.5 meters.  That's a pretty specific situation; in fact I almost never do diagonal sunken highways.  Too much of a pain to do overpasses.

There's also the alternative of using 3D overhanging walls to cover up the bumps.  Someone would have to make a set that works for 7.5 meters, though.

I've thought about that before.  What you could do if you wanted cliffs is paint on some rocks with a terrain brush.

The Max Y for Cliff still matters.  The creation of a cliff effects the way that the grid's polygon is drawn.
Title: Re: NAM Team's Super Special Thread for the month of November!!

Yeah, exactly.  You would get the diagonal fixing effect but you just don't have rock textures.  You wouldn't have cliffs anywhere, but like I said, they could be applied using a terrain brush.  Someone should make a cliff-painting brush.  You could even have different types of rock faces with that approach.

Of course it would all be easier if we could alter the geometry of the terrain so you get the desired effects on non-cliff slopes.  But that's hard coded, right?
Title: Re: NAM Team's Super Special Thread for the month of November!!

There are terrain brushes on the STEX, BUT there's one rather big caveat with using them.

The brush information isn't saved when you exit the city. So basically, you apply them, exit the city, all looks good. Go back in, and your terrain changes are gone. Noooo.

In any case, I prefer a 15m cliff as opposed to a 7.5m cliff, because when you look at it this way:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fa34350966ef506fe264b939b0740bf6b.jpg&hash=36084d7e35dc2aa65424bf9c6467d66b95950f3b)

...and even when you multiply it by 1.3, it still doesn't justify a cliff appearing at 7.5m. Not steep enough.

tan-1(19.5 / 16) = 49.14 degrees
tan-1(9.75 / 16) = 31.36 degrees

Better to only leave it as an option.

Inhibiting all frustrations...

My justification for going for a 7.5-meter DJEM is such that the shape of the cliff would be less "funky", and my "workaround" for how visually jarring it would be is to change out the cliff textures with grass textures.

I thought it'd be simple to explain...

I get it, Ganaram.  If someone wants that 7.5m diagonal sunken highway to look just right, you give the answer.  It is the fastest solution no doubt, and also allows old retaining wall pieces to be used.  Bingo, done.  If that's not a good enough answer, then I guess the next best thing is to open up the BAT.

Quote from: Shadow Assassin on November 30, 2012, 03:40:06 AMBetter to only leave it as an option.
Do you think it should be an option (As in, should I re-make the Appalachian installer to have an additional 7.5m DJEM)?  Maybe I'll wait until we get a couple "Why do my 7.5m highways look like this?" posts?
Title: Re: NAM Team's Super Special Thread for the month of November!!

If I feel they're justified, I'll be building 7.5m diagonal sunken highways whether there's a DJEM or not.  The cliffside jaggies would probably be less profound for 7.5m than they would be for non-DJEM 15m.  Of course, if a 7.5m DJEM becomes available, I will certainly use it.

On another diagonal-related topic, those new diagonal overpasses are looking mighty good, Alex.   My favorite one so far is the DxD RHW-6C over AVE-4.

QuoteThe cliffside jaggies would probably be less profound for 7.5m than they would be for non-DJEM 15m

Yeah, that seems to be the case. I tried forming an diagonal sunken freeway area with a 7.5m DJEM and then reopening the tile after returning to my normal settings to see if the jaggies would stay gone since they were placed with the DJEM and the cliff textures would also disappear--unfortunately it doesn't work. However, I had to go to zoom 6 to be sure the jaggies really had returned if that gives you an idea of how minor they are.

I would say it's probably not warranted to re-do your installer Carl, at least until we start seeing the type of post you mentioned.

Works much better and was able to put more time into getting  the correct dependencies. To my amaement the strides the community has made in that time are really impressive with functionlity (GLR and NAM) of the RH Mod with alot of goodthingsin the works.

Question for the NAM/NWM team:   Will you guys be releasing a puzzle piece for a Maxis highway --> 6 lane avenue transition? (2 puzzle pieces:  1 for elevated and 1 for ground)

This would be extremely useful for my cities and currently it looks funny when having to transition from a Maxis highway to 4 lane avenue to 6 lane avenue (creates a bottleneck).

Should be an easy piece to design/code.   :)

But a really hard piece to model. MHWs are notorious for being underscale and difficult to work with, so such a piece has a low chance of being made unless someone were daring enough to make the necessary models. Even so, there's still work to be done with what's currently being developed: RHW.

If you think it's an easy piece, try to make it. Alex explains it pretty well in this post (it's about RHW instead of NWM but the same principles apply):

Quote from: Tarkus on April 04, 2010, 03:07:26 PM
It's been requested a few times, but it's not likely to happen anytime soon.  It would probably require a fair bit of modeling work, and it's further complicated by the scaling issues, as the Maxis Highways are about 50% underscale compared to the rest of the transit networks in-game, including the RHW.  Also, the transition required would probably take up as much space as the current workaround of RHW-6S/RHW-4 Transition-into-Maxis Highway, if not more, in order to compensate for the scaling.

Due to how the game handles capacity, as far as the traffic simulation is concerned, there's no real bottleneck.  Any "bottleneck" that might actually occur would be the result of the transition from RHW to Maxis Highway technically being an "intersection" . . . and that would affect it the same regardless of the width of the RHW or the Maxis Highway.

Agreed.  This thread existed mostly as moving several development threads to the OSITM board for our time there in November was not really an option.  But we're almost two weeks into December now.

Most of the development here was related to the RHW--I'm not going to cannibalize the thread to cherry-pick the development updates out, as it's kind of a nice archive of the OSITM residency, but I will post up a brief "overview" of the developments that occurred here.

Thread locked.
