I really like your cities infrastructure! And that RHW-10 interchange remind of some in the LA area. (only LA freeways are mostly concrete though)

Update time!

Sorry I've been away for so long folks!  There are a lot of items on my plate, and a busy summer didn't help!  I've been playing many other games as well (such as Earth & Beyond, my favorite game besides SC4, which had an emulator and dedicated server up this summer) so my activeness in the SC4 community has been rather... limited at best.

Nevertheless, I do want to continue the Witburg Expansion update.  In addition, I recently uploaded a new UDI Video to Youtube.  You can view it Here.  Enjoy!  (Video is linked, not embedded because it has no connection with this update.)

Let's get right into it with one of those highway pictures you like to see.  This urban interchange has been reconstructed to accommodate the new paralleled OWR ramps (the old single-sided ramps used to be here).

Here's a pair of closeup shots of a new compact parclo interchange.  The ramps leading to and from the highway were difficult to construct.  By zooming in, you can see the level of detail and design of the ramps.

Here's a before and after shot of ramp reconstruction near Witburg Station.

Before:  (not clickable for full resolution)

After:

A pair of BTM stations along a dual bullet train line.

The Witburg Expansion has brought a lot of urban growth and some exceptionally tall skyscrapers, such as this new condo development.

Here we see a few travel movements through Witburg Staton.  The station's usage has increased steadily reflecting the city's population growth, signifying its importance as the region's mass transit hub.

It seems as though construction zones don't stay within the zones I have layed out, such as this site which has consumed the nearby roads.

Fork in the road:

Here's a central view of the station interchange.  The parallel ramps have recently been straightened and a new connecting ramp has been constructed for eastbound traffic heading south.

Zoomed in:

Zoomed out:

Here's a teaser of a new highway system in the city's south end.  As development continues, this new route will help handle increasing traffic volumes and organize it accordingly.

Anyways, I better end this update now so it doesn't take forever to load.  Part 3 of the Witburg Expansion update will come (eventually).

I hope everyone is doing well!  I hope to see you soon!

All the best,
-Haljackey

2 questions
1. where do you get the bike paths and 2. where do you get the (glowing) power plant

Other than that the Greater Terran Region is looking great!  &apls

I have now officially closed the book on the GTR.

All content has now been moved and relocated here.  I have also narrowed the number of updates from 121 to 80 to make it more compact.

Many of the posts here have been edited and reworked to prepare the GTR for its retirement.  The first post has been modified the most, which includes a brand new table of contents and useful "starter" pictures of my cities and the mosaics.

All of the videos in the GTR will still be available on Youtube.  The GTR's other threads on Simtropolis (both CJ fourm and CJ section), Simpeg, and Skyscrapercity have been deleted in order to relocate here.  The article on the SC4 Wiki will be edited to reflect the retired state of this MD.

Don't worry, I don't have plans to leave the SC4 community.  I'll still be here helping the NAM Team out, working on the RHW interchange guide, making videos, updating my archives, etc.  This just marks the end of my MD career.

I would like to thank everyone that has supported my work over the years, be it simply viewing, commenting, contributing, or helping me expand my SC4 knowledge.  (I did not make this for myself :P)

Thanks and take care!

All the best,
-Haljackey

Hey everyone,

It has been more than 3 years since this MD has been updated (wow time flies!), and I do not plan to update it with new content. However, I have decided to 'update' it with content that has been lost between December 2007 and May 2008.

If you look at the first page of this MD, you'll notice that my first post was in December 2007 and the next one wasn't made until May 2008. A lot of content was lost in this period due to a hard drive failure as well as the famous Simtropolis site hack of 2008.

I thought I had lost all of this content, and reorganized the entries as best I could to compensate for that. However, while digging through some old family photos from backups of mine on an external hard drive, I discovered something I did not expect: the Cache of the original GTR updates from Simtropolis from December 2007 to May 2008. The files successfully restored from backup, and includes text and photos. Even posts from other members from the Simtropolis thread are included, which totals 21 pages of content.

Over the next little bit, I will be posting these updates on this thread for completion and nostalgic purposes. This is in direct contrast with my SC4 Archives project, which aims at restoring historical images of value, and these definitely qualify for that!

This goes to show ya: Always back up your data, even browser Caches. You never know when they could come in handy!

So before I press on, a few things to keep in mind:

-These entries are from the first 21 pages of original GTR updates from Simtropolis

-Some of the updates may be elementary/incomplete due to losses from a hard drive crash or the Simtropolis site hack

-Most of the images are still in their 'full resolution' (1440x900-1920x1200), but for simplicity's sake I am going to resize the majority of them.

-Posts/comments by the community are more than welcome

-New updates will not be coming. My MD career has been retired, so give your hopes up now :P

-To any mods/staff members, I think this MD should remain in the Inactive Classics section as while new posts are coming, nothing new/current will be posted.

Anyways now that that's out of the way, sit back and enjoy the ride. For the next 'update', we will be traveling back in time to December 18, 2007. Cya then!

-Ryan (Haljackey)

That's great news--it'll be nice to take a trip down memory lane with GTR!     And December 2007 . . . would have still been in the RHW 1.3b era.  Hard to believe it's been that long. :o

Durfsurn

Wow Hal this is great news. I was always sad to retread that fateful post of the end of GTR but now it's back- kind of!

sim_link

Have to say this is exciting to hear! GTR was one of the first CJ/MD's I read and followed in my lurking days, I followed it even before I finally joined ST. ;D It will be cool to take a look back at these older updates from so many years ago already.

MandelSoft

The legend has returned... That's all I have to say. I can get down to the memory lane all the way to 2007. Moreover, your next back-in-time update is actually about the time I joined SimTropolis (October 17, 2007), so I was a total newbie back then. How quick things can change... :D
Lurk mode: ACTIVE

Haljackey

Thanks guys, glad to know there's still interest even after all these years.

Yes the RHW will be in its infancy in the coming entries. Version 1-2 which brought us the highway itself and later a limited MIS.

...Anyways, back in time we go: Entry #1. Date: December 18, 2007. It was my first CJ/MD update ever.

I am going to skip the introduction as it is pretty redundant to what I have here on page 1. Let's get right into it!

A major artery and junction.  A baseball diamond and a large intersection is on the right, and Times Square and a rail station is near the top.

A major interchange in the centre of town

Arteries carve through the dense city

The dominant skyline swallows up the majority of this image

A hockey arena and an expensive golf course.  Bullet train and GLR lines provide excellent links with the arena

A "super" avenue

Landmark row

8 lane highway

The triplet towers

Elevated avenue

Collector and express lanes

Bullet train junction

Parclo interchange

A typical bullet train line

Residential high-rises and a small bullet train junction

The buildings scrape the sky

A stack interchange.  This particular interchange has become a landmark for the city!

An old cloverleaf.  It was going to be demolished, but the city instead eliminated the weaving lanes and added eyecandy to the interchange

The gateway to downtown Downtown

The sleeping city

A major stadium and the end of a highway at the crack of dawn

A volleyball interchange.  The RHW has a wide median, allowing it to be widened from 4 to 8 lanes if needed.

A partial interchange along the RHW.  It was designed to have a very positive approach to the city, increasing demand around it.  Most people don't want to live near a highway in real life, thats why this one was built with that in mind.

A complex intersection

A whirlpool interchange.  When it was built, it was designed to have 4 lanes pass under it.  However, when the RHW was widened from 4 to 8 lanes, this design flaw resulted in massive bottlenecks.  The outer lanes of the RHW now lead to the connecting ramps while the inner lanes pass under it.

A GLR to elevated rail transition

A typical neighbourhood

Elevated rail junctions

RHW interchange.  South of this junction the RHW doubles its capacity from 4 to 8 lanes, allowing it to handle its large volumes of traffic with ease.  The outer lanes start/end here to connect with various roads in the area.

A central park

An avenue with a elevated highway beside it with a rail line/interchange beside it

A cruise ship preparing to dock with the terminal

A medley of RHWs shown at night

Up, down, right, left.  Theres a road/highway going everywhere!

The Greater Terran Region's favorite casino!

RHW intersection with GLR routes and stations at sunset

Whew!  I went a little overboard for the first update of chapter 1.  Oh well, I hope you liked it.  Future updates may not be as big as this one.  I wanted my first update to be huge, so I made it huge.

If you have any comments about anything, please post below.

Best,
-Haljackey

mave94

Wow! :shocked2: The GTR MD was already closed when I joined the community, but I have read all of it. You are without any doubt the master of mega cities. I can't believe that the MIS not existed yet way back then. I was 13 years old then and still having fun with SC3k.  :D It's amazing how time can fly.
Great to see you have found the updates you have lost. I look forward to the other updates.

Swordmaster

You had me hoping for a moment... but this is good fun, too. I still think you should reconsider, though. ;D

Cheers
