Title: VDK Bats
Post by: vester on August 16, 2013, 03:16:42 PM
Here is my new project. Another iconic building, I would say most Danes know, if not then from the TV.
I call it the CUBE, after the former firmed had house there:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FKubenR3sCU_N2_zps5d727ed0.jpg&hash=5bf3fccfdbff763c1b19053a2ae1e2cd83ca9d88)

Yes I know, I'm teasing you.

The Cube.  ;D

I like what you did for the pattern.

Thanks Arthur. Glad you like it.

That wall is just a simple box. All the details are in the texture.
Baked a texture from the full geometric.

Here is an update:

Looking good as usual Arne. Just the front pavement, but I know you're working on it. ;)

It's looking nice Arne. Do you have a the full image, it's blurred on this one due to scale down.

;)

Not due to rescaled, but due to lowered rendering quality => faster render.

Will post one tomorrow.

Is this the office block at the end of Ørstedparken (isn't it owned by SBS now?).

Woah! I like those textures, particularly the windows on the smaller wing and the pavements (and the roof and walls...)  ;D

I am curious about those lollipop trees though...
Title: Re: VDK The CUBE
Post by: vester on August 23, 2013, 03:51:50 PM
TY you all.

krbe: Yes it is the building at Ørstedparken / Jarmers Plads.
Think its still own by Realdania. Think SBS just moved in, in the other end toward Farimagsgade. Realdania is still in the other end.
EDIT: At least in 2009 in was own by Realdania through its subsidiary Realea (http://www.realdania.dk/Presse/Nyheder/2009/JarnersPlads_050309.aspx).

The green lollipop trees is just a placeholder until I can get my hands on some nice trees.

EDIT:

Just an update on the nightlights:

Thank you, Derry.

The angle on the wings is just set to 45 degrees. Plan is to fit it later on and do a few different version.

Reworked the stairs on the back:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FSimGroupR3n_zpscbf81980.jpg&hash=6a4dd87fd159b38f32e94b65cd6c7d585fa80618)
Reworked the height of the windows holes and added windows to it as well.

Seems like a nice start!

Curious to know how you'll handle the roof.
Title: Re: VDK Bats - SimGroup
Post by: vester on August 28, 2013, 08:42:00 AM
Ty Arthur.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FSimGroupV5_zps57df49f3.jpg&hash=2cb94b633c9ddd253b31993ce70c4420ef292268)

Well have to redo the roof, but I found a way to do them faster than I use to.

As this is a symmetric roof, I make the model for one side of the roof, then add a symmetry modifier to the top of the stack.
The easiest way is to have the pivot point set in the symmetry line first.

Thank you Matt and Antoine.

Will start out with a tutorial on a way to make windows. I use to make windows using splines and a extrude. This can take some time.
This window that is shown here can be done in less than 2 minutes.

In this tutorial I use this:
[ S ] : a standard shortcut.
[ Inset ] : bottom in one of rollouts. (#8 in these two pictures (http://docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/16/ENU/3ds-Max-Help/index.html?url=files/GUID-F8326C68-F2F9-47F7-AC1D-BA41D7825C7C.htm,topicNumber=d30e48479))

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.autodesk.com%2F3DSMAX%2F16%2FENU%2F3ds-Max-Help%2Fimages%2FGUID-9F27623A-B759-4A6C-A297-198248B0D47E-low.png&hash=28208db6583cec0c2b2020d0cd3b911adfb6d884)

This is a small tutorials on how I have started to do windows by use of poly:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FTutStartWall_zpsa1ff9fc2.jpg&hash=db08d98d9ae1f95cbcf56a07d0074590dc4205a3)
Here we have a wall with two holes for windows.

Panel:
Click on the view so you look directly onto the wall.
In the create panel under Geometry -> Standard Primitives, the plane can be found.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FPlane1_zpsf04d33b5.jpg&hash=0eaa9a45609b077a49e50f7331547e9a5b654ca0)
Turn on the snap [ S ] if its not on. Drag and draw plane.
(by snapping on the first corner of the windows hole, drag to the other corner)
Most windows are not in the same level as the face of the wall. Often set a bit into the hole.
Now would be good time to move it in. Here I move it in, let say 0,10 meters. and then half of the thickness of the finish window.
Here I will use (0,10+0,10/2) = 0,15 meters in total.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FPlanePar1_zps53dd09ae.jpg&hash=429a97b938936e7d088c74403f7ccf541fa8358f)
The setting after I drawn the plane. For the ease for this tut, let say we want to make the frame and the mullions 0,20 m.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FPlanePar2_zps5c0bdfbf.jpg&hash=556f6576f5ef6f1538e93807f877a704edfd4a4b)
The first thing I do then is make the plane I drawn before the 0,20 meters smaller on both width and height.
(For some reason the two dimension is switched)

Editable poly:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FRightClickPoly_zps4ed275a9.jpg&hash=6bac155aff09c8844594a65e50b096ca4fd52f7e)
Now its time to turn this into a editable poly. One way to do this is to right click and pick it for the quads menu as shown above.

Inset:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FInset_zps3e08e809.jpg&hash=8f5fd7172ea86ce6ba21b48a5efdd93fe0013d5a)
Under selection you click on polys (a red square icon) [ 4 ] , then click on [ Ctrl ] + [ A ] to select all the polys.
Now click on [ Inset ]. Set the inset by polygon and set the value to half width of the mullions 0,1 m
(and not the 0,15m as in the above images, will replace this images later on)

When you now press okay you should get something like this:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FPolyInset_zps8c7429fe.jpg&hash=415b36680d02008a7dbaab70e893e1e6623c8d24)

Here I will post the easy way, but were changing the result later on is a harder.
(Might in a later post another way around making this more dynamic later on if want to know about it.)

Detach:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FDetach_zps9a38f21a.jpg&hash=9de8d412bdcbd634d8c0cbe3a0641ae1e469ec3d)
Keeping the selection active with what will be the glas panels selected, click on detach under Edit Geometry.
Now you get a small dialog box up, say Detach as Object001. Here you can rename it to Glaspanels01 instead and click OK.

Moving corner verties:
Now we need to move the corners back into place so the windows frame is the same size as the mullions and it fills the windows hole.
For a simple window like this you can just pick the verties and move them out 0,1 meters.

Using Axis Constraints:
If the geometry is a bit more complex, I would for this step, I use the Axis Constraints and its toolbar.
To get that toolbar to show, right click at the edge of one of the toolbar.
Now click on the Axis Constraints and you get this.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.autodesk.com%2F3DSMAX%2F16%2FENU%2F3ds-Max-Help%2Fimages%2FGUID-AA4E6058-9F25-43E6-9CDC-847BF5D496EE-low.png&hash=6bf36d7ca9ede78558d46fce1833e92b7ce41001)

First you will need to click on the icon with the magnet to turn on axis constraints [ Alt ] + [ D ].
What this means is that you can move an object or subobjects like verties in just one or two directions.
To get really good use of this, you will need make sure you have the Snap turned on [ S ].

Lets mark the three vertices at the top:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FAxisConstrains_zps5eed2dd9.jpg&hash=bbb469b217fe592acef6cdf1eb6d1a283802678d)

Now maybe you want to luck the selection.
This can be done by clicking on the small luck icons just left of the coordinates (also here you can see if its turn on or not) or you can press space.
So now we want to move the vertices up.

Now you can constrain the movement in one axis by clicking on the axis (which that then turns yellow)
or two axis by click on the yellow square between two axis (see the images above) that turns up,
when moving the mouse over it. After click on the y-axis (green one),
take hold to one of the verties on move up and snap to one of the corners.

Shell modifier:
Close the selection. Time to switch to the Modify panel.
At the top, just under the object name, you find the modifier list.
Click on it and  drop down menu appears and start writing Shell.
When the shell is marked click the return key.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FShell_zpsdaaba0ba.jpg&hash=58c2626c23d44c2bce2f90e5a6cf198b8ddc5a0b)
Here I mostly use the parameters at the top (Inner and Outer amount).
I use the straight corners, for more complex geometry.
This can be polygons where the surfaces isn't in the same plane, like windows around a corner.

Now its time for doing the same to the glass panel (that we detached earlier).
Pick it and and add a shell modifier. This time the amounths should be 0,025 m / 0 m.

This will result in the glass panel being set 0,025 meters into the windows frame:

End result:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FOSITM%2520Bat%2520tut%2FGlasspanel_zps17000e63.jpg&hash=10ab7bec123fe54b6484f12a0b00ee8bf26b0ffe)
Here is the finished window

Started by rework the bat by adding 0.5 meters to each level to the height.

The structure has an interesting and unique look to it. I like it, in part because of the window treatment. The windows aren't all lined up like little soldiers, yet there's a feeling on consistency in the placement.  I guess I'll have to hang a sign on my region that says, "Buildings by vester."

This project is coming along really well, but I'm not surprised considering the things you've produced in the past. The deck is a great idea - it's a nice eye-catching touch.

You're certainly making the most of your month in the spotlight. I really like the fire station's architectural charm, but the roof doesn't compliment the structure. It's too overpowering at this point, but I know you'll get those settings set right. ;) The church is lovely, and I'm wondering if it's the one with the little girl looking out the window.  Whether or not, it's quite a work of art - both the building and your interpretation of it.

Has been lowering the platforms with 1 meter, the roofs over the platforms with 2 meters and lowered the roofs over the stairs as well.
All that meant that a lot of walls had to be adapt as well as the windows and the wooden framing. It took its time. :P

Hope someone could help me figure out how to export it. Want it to connect the rail lines with the road above.
Thinking the road was done with bridges in NAM.
The wall closest to us in the picture was exported to be a separate overhanging prop, do the platform as two separate props.

Both seems like a good option to me.  ;)
Also, considering how easy it is to mod nowadays, it wouldn't be too hard for the user to change it to its liking himself.

Nice start on the night lights, Arne! The intensity on the platform is just about right!

Which ever transit it'll serve the station is very nice. Making two different nightlights for the church is an excellent idea!   &apls

One of the troubles I keep running into is landmarks being shiny beacons in the night as they're being lit as modern day monuments. Not all that convincing when the city is supposed to be situated in medieval times so I'm eagerly looking forward to your church!

The RL station serves both S-train (Suburban trains) and regional trains. As it is now, all regional trains coming in from west to the main train station ends their service at Østerport Station.

Was thinking it could be modded for both EL/glr and normal rail, so one platform for EL/glr and one platform for normal rail.

You ask me my opinion on one bat and have all these others in the background

Think I gonna go have to refill my mug!!

But re the station one thing i thought about is the brightness. if the train/tram mod has no nightlights then the platform would need to be a bit brighter - if that makes sense ;)

going back to look at all those other beauties

Both models are outstanding - I like the second one best by a very thin margin, but it's probably too futuristic for my region. Still, it won't hurt to admire the idea and workmanship.

Wow! After seeing the last two photos, I might have to find a place for it after all.

Been working on the stairs and the railing along the top and along the stairs.
For the placement of the posts in the railings, I have been using the function called Spacing Tool. Its a tool I just started to use on this bat.
Very powerfull. You can clone an object along a path.
For the stairs, the slope next to it and the railing, I model half of the model.
Set the pivot to be in the centre axis. Then used a symmetry, to mirror the first half over.

Beside that been working on the connection between the two arches (hardly seen) and foundation on the arches.

None of the textures so far, is the final ones. They are use more to easier to see the different parts apart.

Because I rather use my time modelling than wait for renders to be done.
If I go with the settings from SF's bat4max, I could wait an hour or so for each preview. :P
The final render will of course be done with the higher settings.

Thinking of try my luck with this station in something called Revit. A building information modeling software.
Just been on a course and going to download a trial version of it.
Its sort of a 3d program for engineers and architects. Its also from Autodesk just like 3ds Max.

I know I should try another buildings, but I just like to the challenge to do this one.

Last rendering took 35 minutes and that is just for one preview and with settings up a little.

Okay have to get back to the lights. They are acting up.  ()testing()

I would be very interested to know how things go with Revit.

On another note, good job on the lighting. This might be a little late in the process, but this station strikes me as working well for color coded lines with the way you've used color accents in the building and lighting - for example we see the Red Line version, maybe there could also be a Blue Line, Green Line, etc. I know it's that much more work on your end, but variety would be pretty cool.

On another note, good job on the lighting.
Thank you. Still working on it.

This might be a little late in the process, but this station strikes me as working well for color coded lines with the way you've used color accents in the building and lighting - for example we see the Red Line version, maybe there could also be a Blue Line, Green Line, etc. I know it's that much more work on your end, but variety would be pretty cool.

Sound like a good idea.
EDIT: For some reason I got to think of Brenda Xne and her Modern Metro Station Subway Bus Parking (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/2650-modern-metro-station-subway-bus-parking/) (try to say that fast).
Not that realistic, but I loved them anyway.

At the moment I am adding "footing" to the columns. They sort didn't reached the ground. We can't have that.

I am. I don't really use BIM at all, but any new way to tie modeling programs together is a good thing, especially if it can result in more BATs!  ;D

Dug up another bat from the dust.

I gave up on this the first time around due to the size of it. MY Computer just couldn't handle it.
But now with more RAM and Windows 7, 64 bit, I have start working on it again:

While the station is certainly challenging, and the lighting is coming along very nicely, you know my favorite is going to be the cathedral. Funny thing, when you first showed me photos of structures in Copenhagen, it looked like a retailer must have had a huge sale on green roofing tiles. :D Then you explained the reason for the green roofs, and it was the start of my becoming completely fascinated by Danish architecture and architectural detail.

Yes Joan, here in Denmark we have a tradition for copper roofs. In Copenhagen the copper ends up even more green, due to sea close by. It add some salt to the air, which that give a more lively color on the copper.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRD2R004W_zps31d9c780.jpg&hash=2c6660548da9186838e5c16b96efe96ba9f8edae)
Slowly working my way around the model adding more and more details to it. There are a few places where I have use textures instead of modelling. One place all the details is in shadow or see from the side, so the different can't be seen anyway.

EDIT:
A close up of the Christian IV's chapel:

Frank: It was building over along period of time. In the four big chapels Kings and Queens are buried. Most of the Danish Kings are buried in the cathedral.

Most of the main structure of the church was finish, when a fire in bough out 1282.
At this time only the southern tower was finished. The northern tower is assumed being finished around 1400.
For a long time the towers stood with plain flat roofs. Around 1500 they got pitched roofs.
The towers got their around the same time as Christian IVs chapel was build. That is the one in Dutch Renaissance style with all the statues.
The chapel was build in 1614-42 and the towers got the spires in 1635-36.

The small spire, the Margrethe Spire over the crossing was build around 1420.

The first royal chapel the Chapel of the Magi (Christian I's Chapel) was build in 1459. (The one right of the towers in the first pictures).
A lot of changes has been going on, on the church. Two big renovations was done where the church changed appears. The last one, the west portal changed (the walls between the two towers) and the western entrance was changed. The old was moved to Copenhagen.

The last chapel was added in 1917-24 (to left of the towers in 1st pictures).

Have a lot of good pictures, but they are in a book. A good book with floor plains, elevations and sections drawings in scale. :D
A strange scale that is, 1:300, but in scale non the less.

I seem to recall seeing this model, or one similar, quite some time ago not long after you started on it. If this is the one I think it is, we discussed the detail work (last photo). You said the tiny statuary would not be visible in game, but you would know it's there. It is an attitude like that toward modeling which defines your work, and makes it a cut above so many others IMO.

At the moment I am working on the porch in the north east corner. (Closed by in the picture)

Still dancing around the big spires. Haven't got the shaped figured out....

Thank you Frank.

The roof on the last structure is transparent, but its going to be a bit more transparent. Sometimes the settings you use for normal windows in walls, is not going well on roof structures as this one.

Been adding foundations and started working on the nightlights.
Still not sure, but think I am not going to add lights to the chapels as well:

Started working on the spot lights.

Using what is call photometric lights. When I figured out how to work them, its so much easier than the normal lights.

Got some strange shadow problems.
With just the brick structure visible, no problem. The shadow was there.
With the whole model visible, the shadow vanish.

Had to change from mental ray shadow to raytrace shadow.

Been adjusting the color of the copper roof textures. Thought the texture was a bit to dark, compared to the copper roof I see around here. We have a lot of copper roofs in Copenhagen.

Title: Re: VDK Bats
Post by: vester on October 30, 2013, 02:17:01 PM
No the lod and the bright textures is not related problems. That is more a problem with how the textures is made up.

Might just give up on the sf bat4max script and go back to chrisadams.
First of: Like Xannepan says, I rather get some work out, than spending my time on rendering.
Mental ray rendering that is use in sf's version takes a lot more time than scandline render.

I agree with gn_leugim.

The church is a fantastic project, but the image shows a very bright church. Too bright, I fear.
Of course it could be the image, but when it is the church I fear a re-render should be good. Even if it takes some more time.

Good luck!

What I was trying to say, was that I hadn't finish working on the textures.

So far it looks promissing, but the textures has gone darker,

Well the gamma fix for 3ds max 2014 (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28998-bat4maxv5-3ds-max-2014-gamma-fix/) did a lot of it.

Changing Sampling Mode to Classic / Raytraced did some.

Started a new bat project. This time an elevated rail station:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FNBS_v4n_zps746a9a31.jpg&hash=d0959b205688c937d4e30bbb952ec748c35f49f6)

Its inspired by Nørrebro Station in Copenhagen:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fe%2Fe1%2FN%25C3%25B8rrebro_Station%252C_Copenhagen.jpg&hash=27a642a63501fe07b751c5fa463d2f58c423e886)
The area around the station is one of the most busy place in the city.
Some of it is gone at the moment, due to construction site for a metro station next to the station.

At the moment the roof is solid, but I am thinking of doing a more modern version of the roof, maybe try to get this structure to be visible in the game:

Was thinking for doing two versions; one for  EL-rail and one for viaduct rail.

The size looks pretty good compared to the trains:

That green color is really hard to get right. Still not there.

EDIT:

Another try on the green plaster texture:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FNBS_v10n_zps1f641e19.jpg&hash=f4143a474eedd5505c545c25c0cd71cd1d23b21e)
Need to add some more dark area. That way people can replace or remove the sign.

About the S sign, that is going to be rendered out as separate prop.

I'm a bit behind on posting – still trying to get some semblance of a temporary computer system set up. I like the last photo, although I do agree that the color looks a little bit off. A shade too bright maybe? Now for a little question: In the two photos you posted yesterday, the station is too close to the road IMO. There's no room for parking, dropping off passengers or milling around on foot. I know most folks in Copenhagen ride bikes, but based on RL photos you've showed me, there wouldn't even be enough room for all the bikes that would likely be parked. Just a thought which has left me wondering. And you already know why I'm eager to see the finished BAT. ;)

I love the modeling on that station, excellent job on the diamond skylight roof as well. That green though...  &mmm

The platform walls also look more marble than concrete, which is just making the green clash even more. I think the platform walls need more of a dark concrete, and the green texture looks better with less noise.

One thing, its an urban station in the dense residential area, where people will be arriving by bus, bike or on foot.
There is no need for people to walk between the road and the station. There is room in colognad for pedestrians.
Most people living in Copenhagen don't need and don't have a car.

There is plenty for room for bikes at the back of the station:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FKrakSkraa1_zps241f5228.jpg&hash=278f4d7079be77f3fb2567b8250fcb437f758fed)
All the curved roofs at the back (to the right) is bike sheds.
At the moment all the bike sheds are remove. That area and most of road to the left of the station is now one big construction site (http://goo.gl/maps/KHilj).
When that area is open in 5 years, there will only be one combine bus and bike lane and one bikelane the other way passing next to the station.

Lovely modeling and the textures are great!..

Except that yellow-green. Not your fault, I find it also hideous on the real building. It just.... IMO it's not a color for a train station. Don't know what they thought when they built it. Do you think you can do an extra non-yellow version? Something more generic like grey stone/marble.
Title: Re: VDK Bats
Post by: FrankU on November 13, 2013, 02:43:15 AM
A beautiful realistic model!  &apls

The green is terribly hard to resemble, so I think you did a great job when art128 says the green of the model is as ugly as the green of the original.
Maybe indeed for the greenhaters a greyish variation would be nice to have...
I'd not do marble. That is too fancy for this station in my opinion.
Title: Re: VDK Bats
Post by: gn_leugim on November 13, 2013, 06:40:35 AM
my only criticism goes for the "stone" texture; it is overscaled IMO and it makes the model look like it is a miniature made out of stone/marble instead of a real station, viewed from afar. it applies to both grey and yellow parts of the model, but in particular to grey. I said stone, but I guess that is concrete, right? (the fact I though and name it as stone when I first look at it, says to me it is not good, you know what I mean?)

to improve it I would either decrease (in a large amount) the scale of the texture used or, make a new one from scratch. Also, in the process I would add some weathering and ageing effects to it such moss, dirt, cracks, etc. If you would do that, not only to the referred textures, but all of them, then this station would be like 6/5 stars

Stone texture ? I can only think of two, one on the viaduct support and and the floors.

There is concrete, asphalt, plaster, paint and glass.
Some posters and store fronts as well.

ooh I like that!  I really like the storefronts on the train station it gives it a more 'integrated' feel.  I also like that the other side doesn't have the store fronts essentially giving you the option of which side you want to see.

Your using Max 2014 for all this right?

Well I do most of my textures compositing directly in max, adding dirt, gradient ect.

That texture is suppose to be concrete.
Well the matter of scale is hard on textures. If I go down on scale its get repetitions.

QuoteWell the matter of scale is hard on textures. If I go down on scale its get repetitions.

one way to deal with this would be to add random thing in the middle of the texture or to use different scales in the different components of the texture, although I don't know if it's doable in Max, never used it :)

The pictures in your previous post is what SC2013 should have looked like, but that's for a different topic.

I think the benches look good; they might be slightly oversized, but as long as they are more subdued, I think it's acceptable.

The station is really coming together nicely; I especially like the desaturated yellowish-green; the RL color was...well, you know. I really like the clear roof. There aren't that many stations that we have that do this, and it's always fun to watch as they enter. Too bad Heavy-Rail trains don't stop at stations. Will this be released as an El-Rail station, too?

I would suggest setting Mental Ray's final gather preset to low.  I have considered making this the default for BAT4MAX6.  High final gather settings don't really net much in this situation.  I rendered my Morgan-Lake station using the low preset in final gather so it would cut down on the render times significantly.

Thank you Noah.

gn_leugim + droric: So no none of you have any comments on the model itself ?

Scanline is another render just like Mental Ray.

Maybe it time to open up a new thread on bat4max here on sc4d.

The couple things that come to mind when taking a look at your model are the different colors of textures in the roof.  Same with the brick it seems to be different colors/styles in different sections of the model (they don't seem to belong).  Other than that it looks fantastic!  Did you have orthographic projections to make this or did you do it by hand off of images?  I struggle with interpolating data when I only have a couple pictures of something.

Remember that this building is about 800 years old, so if some of it have different materials that is due to the progress to use of materials.
The church was started sometime before 1200 and last chapel was added 1919-24.

Brick is very depended on the quality of the clay that they are made of.
Have been thinking of toning that difference on the dark brick used on the north east porch.
The last picture is seen from the north-north-west. The tower is facing due west.

[Click on images to enlarge them]

If look at this images you see two different materials, copper and zinc.
When you look at the copper it goes from brown to green. Stay green for long time, for then turning slow dark like on the towers in the above picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2F990059993_da5885c147_b_zps4dcde772.jpg&hash=a34c50bcd451ce6aec5cc66ed5e44fde6aad78be)

On this project I got my hands on a thick book on the cathedral with some good drawings in.
Here on the last version of the cathedral, the details is a lot sketchy.
I started of my doing the basic volumes:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR6-0.jpg&hash=12dbeb673befc410f39b7921355c0f948445eed5)

When I started this project (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4260.0) I was living in Roskilde so I took some images, but the back of the cathedral was covered by scaffolding:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FP3220078rs_zps857d74a3.jpg&hash=a12056b0cdf0de8f17a5045d986781d734e31dce)
If you look at this image, you see that the copper on the towers has been replaced and is dark brown.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_zps7792f23b.jpg&hash=fdb8c32cd6b604b2892c00675543d4683b120b05)
On the chapel on the left, the copper is started to turn green.

If I don't have a lot of picture of something, I use normal practice as a reference point.
Sometimes it can be good to look at buildings from/in the same firm / period / style.

Ok, of the "I dont like the Max" to the "let's help this bat to get even better".

in parts:
-Model: It looks very well done and detailed, sometimes to a point where is no point in doing so, unless you plan the render in HD, which I urge you not too, because the file would be huge. But overall, it looks great and I wouldn't change nothing!

-Textures: about these I have something to say.  understand the reason why some have different hues and textures, ok. Nevertheless, in most cases, I see that the  textures tend to tile in repetitive pattern. For instance, in the main body of the church, you can see a consistent "line" of darker bricks on the texture, at least at three different heights (by the ground level, in the middle of the bell tower and at the level of the bells). this is the most notorious pattern of the brick textures, but others are visible. Also, the texture you applied is rather raw (one factor that contributes for the tileness) and look a bit naked, void of life. You say that the church is 800 years old, yet, not a single crack, moss, liquen or piece of little dirt can be found in the walls. Ofcourse, I am not telling to make it look like it is in ruins, no, but one or other detail, here and there, would do wonders ;) Finnaly, I see no gradients in the textures. they are essential IMO to make any model look 200% better. I can extend these tips to the roof textures as well.

I hope you find these tips useful :)

By looking, I do see the repetitive pattern of texture. That said, I don't think the church looks like it is 800 years old. There are thousands of younger buildings here in Denmark that look A LOT worse than Roskilde Cathedral. The upkeep and material quality is likely to be better than buildings built by the lowest bidder 100 years ago. Also, the darker colours will probably conceal a great deal of the "worn" look; lighter bricks are far more suspectible to looking damaged.

Arne,

I think you did a great job making the brick look much more realistic at least to my eyes.  I can still see the slight variations in the color where you wanted to show the difference between the old and the new... Although this screenshot is flipped 180 from the other one so it's a bit hard to see the changes you made 1:1.  I like what I see here though maybe a bit of tweaking on the rightmost roof section if possible to get the corroded copper textures to line up a bit better.  Or use the viewport canvas and maybe the healing brush to try to hide the lines a bit.  I haven't really textured anything yet as I have mostly used all procedural textures using the arch+design and maps.  I keep picking glass and metal structures so there isn't too much of a variation in the surface.

Ahh might as well just notate a few things I see...  here's a screenshot.

Its hard to fix it. Have rotated the textures a little (12.5°) and moved the textures a little on the roof surfaces next to it.

At the moment, it just a planar UVW Map, seen top down:

You are welcome to try out doing a texture for the cone shaped roof over the apse.
The cone continue through the other roof.

Have worked on toning down the differences in the brick textures.

The shadow on the backside of the chapel has a naturally causes:

It the shadow from one of the spires/towers.

gn_leugim: Haven't got around to add gradient to the textures. Will end up adding a gradient in the end.
Tried to export it as HD, but that ended up on a filesize of 13 mb.

Next thing to do:

This portal, that use to be at Roskilde Cathedral, but now is placed on Holmens Kirke / Church of Holmen.
Holmen (The Islet) was the Danish Royal Naval Base and Dockyards. Most of it now used of civil purpose, only a small part of it, is still used by the Navy.

there is also one thing I ddnt say. I don't know if it is really the case, as it is only against a grey background, and would ne more visible against a ingame shot or even in game, but there is a slight chance that your textures may be oversaturated. but without a reference is somehow hard to tell.  ;)

Looking at it I need to add a few more side to the columns.

Just been reading up on a renovation of the Kingsgate in the mid 1700s.
That is just a little more than hundred years after it was raised.

It was standing there until 1874 where it was replaced by a new one.
Today you can see it on a church close by the Danish parliament.

This is done with a grey ambient/reflective Occlusion material applied plus one material on the plate with the text.
The ambient/reflective Occlusion helps to bring out all the small details.

The writing over the door is the motto the Danish monarch, Christian IV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_IV_of_Denmark), king of Denmark and Norway.
REGNA FIRMAT PIETAS is Latin which means Piety strengthens the realms.

Have to go and take some pictures of the gateway and the door.
Then I need to figure out how to include an ambient occlusion in the diffuse. Its something about doing unwrapping and baking textures :P

It might be easier to use the Viewport Canvas in 3ds max or use Mudbox if you have access to that.  Viewport canvas will allow you to paint directly in 3ds max right on the diffuse maps.  You can use a composite material to combine the dirt with the regular texture.

Joan, you refer to the gate? No, I am quite certain this is some kind of Neo-classicism or eclectic style from the 19th century. They all look quite alike and even specialists do confuse these 19th century neo-styles, but it must be something like that. The church itself looks mainly Gothic, making it about 14th or 15th century, I guess.
Am I right Arne?

Your church is nearing perfection with every step you take.
Title: Re: VDK Bats
Post by: vester on December 08, 2013, 09:44:47 AM
Sorry Frank, but no.

To say when the church is from is a bit hard. As written earlier, construction was started around 1200. A big approx to add to this.
The main church (nave, aisle, chancel and transepts) with the southern tower was done by before a big fire in 1832. The northern tower was finished in 1400.
The main church is in Romanesque and turn over to Gothic.

Christians IVs chapel and the gate is in the style called Dutch Renaissance.
Its was the style in use in Denmark from 1550 to 1730 and again around 1890.
Construction on the chapel was started in 1619 and finished in 1641.
The gate was constructed 1634-35.
The hole western portal (the wall above the door and between the two towers) was altered around the time the chapel was builded.

The church was renovated around 1850, were it got its original appearance where it was possible.
Here the western portal got back its original Gothic appearance.

Maybe its time to read up on the different architectural styles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architectural_style).

For Denmark its a bit like this:
Romanesque (1050-1200)
Gothic (1150-1550)
Renaissance (1500 - 1660)
Baroque 1640-1730
Régence (1720-1740)
Rococo (1730 - 1760)
Neoclassical  (1760 -1860)

Modernism
- Industrialism
- Functionalism
Postmodernism

There are more style than the above, but these are the main styles in Denmark. Again it varies from source to source.

Hmmm, yeah. Maybe I joust should have shut up....

Thanks Arne,
I did indeed read some of your previous posts about the complex growth of the church. That is quite common, by the way. Many churches in Europe have been built, changed, extended, broken or burned down, rebuilt, re-extended, additionally extended etc etc. That is one of the main things that makes them interesting.
Anyway, when I read Joans remark on the gate looking older than the churcht I thought: that is not true.... And I admit that I did not take enough time to really look what has been going on and I just did a guess about the ages.
Maybe I should say sorry?  :-[

I also use polyunwrapper (http://www.polytools3d.com/tools.html) for unwrapping.

While we are at script/plug-ins have you checked out scriptspot.com (http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max) ?

Interesting... How well does the UVW unwrap work versus using a pelt map or such?  Do you still need to make cuts in the UV template for it to lay flat?

I have checked out Scriptspot.com  I have used greeble and a couple other sweep scripts from there.  I mostly just use the native tools in 3ds max for everything I have done so far.  I made a Chicago style prop set for RTMT pics are over on my private thread in the NAM board.

Another handy one is the copy-paste script from scriptspot.  http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/copy-and-paste-objects

Pelt map is just one of the techniques of unwrapping.

Problem with pelts is that the size of the texture density can varies a lot, sometimes even get total screwed mapping.

Arne,

Have you had a chance to try DX Ripper out for Google Maps?  It lets you rip entire buildings out of google maps including the textures.  It could be handy for starting a building since it gives you a fairly accurate basic layout.  Although you do need an older copy of 3ds max to import the .3dr since there is a special plugin.

Problem with the google earth models is the qualities is a bit, so so.
Downloaded a sketch model just to see if it was a way to go, but no.
Detail level was not the best and the scale was of.

A little something I am playing around with.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FTBP3b_zps6dfd8d75.jpg&hash=4203d59642f8c377fab16ebd92c34ceea562caed)

The problem is the level. The water is above the street. (To the right in the 1st pictures).

Its The Tycho Brahe Planetarium.
In side the cone is a half dome 3d film (IMAX) can be shown as well as the night sky with up to 10.000 stars.

Thinking in game it could work as a school or library.

Arne,

I like to use Forest Pack Lite for my flora as there are many customization's and the free plants are very high quality.  It's a pretty flexible program especially for being a 'lite' version with only a few restrictions.  You can easily vary the color using the Material/Get color from Gradient feature.  The size and positions can be randomized using the transform section.

Another script I ran across yesterday which might need some investigation is the Building Generator script.  You can find it over at www.tysonibele.com/Main/BuildingGenerator/buildingGen.htm.

The Cube building is looking cool.  I like the wall geometry/texturing.

What I did was to model the facade with full geometry. Then rendered out an AO map, which I use an overlay layer on the diffuse color and as a AO shadow map.
Then I used that material on a plain wall (a box with a hole in):

This is not a bat as such, but more of a NAM thing.
Installed RRW that comes with the latest NAM and used it with the railviaducts.
Here the switchs still had the original textures. This is due to the tight corner of the railviaducts, so new puzzle pieces:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FBATs%2FRailviaducts%2FSwitchOrthoMax2_zps18cdb013.jpg&hash=ac955eb7b845a35ec0f54c8639ce748604e08aec)

Almost done with a curve piece as well.

On those project I ran out of drive.
Not forgotten, more just been put on hold for the finale push.

While doing the trains I took a lot of pictures, a lot of these were taken on the railviaducts.
With RRW installed, there were a few pieces that still had the old Maxis textures.
Talked with Willy, told him about the problem. He told be that there was needed some updated piece, so.....

These are not rendered pieces (BATs) but real 3d models. These means just like the other puzzle pieces that will change appearance with what textures mod you have installed (3-4 difference comes with NAM).

Thank you all. Glad you like what you see.

The skylines is in fact on the real building, not as big though.

Been working on some resizing, not much. Adding a little width and depth to the main buildings, making the arch gates and the side building a bit slimmer.
Started to add some textures to the roof of the side building.

Still a few textures to add.
Going to add some barge boards to the sides of the roof. Then its off to do gutters and downspouts.
Last off will be some colored lights to the front. Blue or green, not sure yet.

The textures look great!!!  &apls  But I think the sky window needs more work. The size of the curved glass makes it look a bit unrealistic and out of place. Perhaps splitting every piece of glass in 3 or four parts will do it... (IMHO)
The main door looks fantastic!

As akways with your creations, the textures are among the best out there, fantastic work on them Arne.

I agree a bit with romualdillo about the sky window. Also the grey slopped roof isn't so well, you might want to make it the same texture as the rest of the roof.

Otherwise, excellent! I hope you'll make the blue light shine in the night. :)

Even if it's not Japanese styled, I'll probably use it....... :)

This looks very nice building. It would be very usefull in my cities. Functional police stations (and firestations) are always in need.

However, you had some old, but very interesting buildings. Such as Metropolitan police station and old power station. Even if you are not going to LOT those, would you consider to upload BATs only? BATs alone would be very usefull resources.

So far just two textures, cobbles and glass.

My thought is to add a white plaster to the front and some yellow bricks to the back.
Not sure about the two gables. Plaster or bricks ?

Used some new technique that I learn about in this video: Clint DiClementi: Composite Maps in 3DS Max  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhom5CTFlRs).
Having different textures on the same object. Using material IDs and map channels making it possible to have different uv-mapping for different textures on the same object.

The first great fire in 1728 in Copenhagen, which took out approx 1/3 of the city.
One of the result was that in 1729 a small book was published  In it was drawings for 3 type of houses, all called Ildebrandshuse - Fire houses.

Still a lot of stuff to add to the roof.

Added a few more details to the basement and the 1st floor, like an extra entrance on the side, stairs, doors and move the basement stairs 2 window rows.

Have now started on the dormers on the roof:

Great work Arne!!! I like the stairs and doors leading to the basement, and I love the red colour (I know it's a risky option in game, but without it it wouldn't be a Nordic set  ;D). I think it was common in all the big cities to hide everything that looked medieval and "poor".

I think it was common in all the big cities to hide everything that looked medieval and "poor".

Well around Roskilde and in the countryside west of the city, the timbered houses got whitewash all over. Think the thing about painting the timber another color in some area is something quite new.

A house from the country side, now found in the open air museum at Brede north of Copenhagen:

Well, I don't know much about Denmark's vernacular architecture. Perhaps they painted the timber frames because it was easier to maintain them or because they wanted to hide them as much as possible trying to imitate the cities' architecture according to their possibilities. I think showing the wood structure depends on the cultural moment, perhaps 100 or 200 years ago it was seen as something poor and old-fashioned, so in Copenhagen or Roskilde all the main facades were plastered and the others were left a they were, or built with cheaper materials. It just was about being modern and more "classic". Now we see the timbered facades as something interesting and we try to give them more importance. Perhaps I'm wrong, and in the Danish case it was different, but in Spain it was that way, people hid all the older structures and the roof tiles during the XVIII and XIX century, because they were uncool for their point of view. (For instance, that's why all the houses I've done have a ledge hiding the roof)
(Beautiful pictures, by the way)

Red: Haven't thought of modeling the roof. Maybe at one point will model one roof, do some displacement, normal and ambient occlusion maps.

Thank c.p.

Vortex: That house is in fact inside a back yard / narrow alley (https://www.google.dk/maps/@55.6788359,12.5826957,261a,20y,41.72t/data=!3m1!1e3):

Here is a bit timber frames, one in the same style:

Well at a later point move the different members a bit, add some more diagonals and some more on the gables at the back.

BTW: As with the last two, very few objects. This one has just 3 objects.
The house, the gate door and the floor in the gateway.

Indeed!! You really document your projects!!! Great work!!!  &apls

About the timber frames: If I haven't misunderstood the map, the areas near Copenhagen usually paint the frames. Perhaps my theory is right, and they painted them to hide them or they painted them because of traditional and ancestral reasons due to... whatever... Well who knows, I'm only speculating. Maybe you find an answer in the books. I really like this kind of questions, how did traditions start?

Making it a serious study, eh?!

Just like my trains. Getting what ever I get out of it.

The fire in 1728, was followed by another fire in 1795 (and burn down of the kings palace the year after) and the first big bombardment in history in 1807.
The two fires and the bombardment each took out around 1/3 of the city. So there are not a lot of buildings in Copenhagen from before 1728.

From the books I read, its not clear, but traditional plays a big role as I understand it.

A close up of something that will be missed out in the end:

Different to Arthur I love timberframed houses! Can´t get enough of them.  :D
And different to Noah I would say, that this kind of architecture is very common in whole northern Europe. I can imagin a house like that in northern Poland or Germany as well.

And these rounded corners are a nice detail!

Went through an open gateway, where I got some inspiration for the new roof structure on the lower part of the house.
still no textures on the dormers.

romualdillo: Still working on the textures. The yellow texture is a composite material, where the dirt will be add using sets of textures (diffuse and alphas).

A request: Is there someone that can HELP ME convert some igs files to 3ds or max ?  ;)

Not sure what program the igs file format is from.
Title: Re: VDK Bats
Post by: art128 on August 30, 2015, 02:59:04 PM
According to google:

QuoteIGS is a 2D/3D vector graphics format based on the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES). An IGS file is composed of 80-character ASCII records, a record length derived from the original punched card era. It can be used by many CAD programs as a standard ASCII text-based format for saving and exporting vector data, and can store wireframe models, surface or solid object representations, circuit diagrams, and other objects. The IGS format has become the default standard file format for transferring 3D model files between the different CAD software packages.

Source (http://www.openthefile.net/extension/igs)

If I understand correctly, you can open them in autoCAD?

Are these really old files?  It appears my old DOS version of AutoCAD will import those files, but not my "newer" (i.e. 16 years old) version.  Give me a PM and I'll try to convert it to .dxf and/or .3ds.

EDIT: Have you tried importing via 3dsmax?  I just checked and in my version, under Files->Import, there is an options to import .igs files.  (But I'm using an old version.)

5 objects in all.

Corrected a few mistakes, that was done the fist time around.

Been trying to find some old pictures of the building from its first, say, 30-50 years.  BUT no luck so far.

TY, Simmer.

Had some computer problems, coursing Max to stop work. Reinstall to no avail.
A complete uninstalment and a new instalment did the trick, but it toooooook for ever ! ! ! ! !

Started to work on the facade with the loading ducks. The facade to the left in the previous post:
This is builded up of 8 unique element. The rest is going to be instances of the others.
Most elements are going from centre to centre of the columns.

A lot of the windows are bricked up. Thinking I will do the building I more like on the picture Matt posted,
than it is at present (https://www.flickr.com/photos/34958417@N04/albums/72157645174963211).

A lot of details has gone into the windows, more than normal than I use to.

EDIT: I see I have undone some of the changes to top level. As can be seen there are a few sections with to the new details.
Look at the shadows between the windows on the top floor.

Have done all the windows on the two sides.
- What is missing now on the two sides are:
- Fire Escape
- The entrance on the main facade.
- Figuring out how the loading docks should look like. Got no idea so far. The terrain is a meter or two lower than the entrance.

Any one could show me some pictures of older loading docks and the doors from the Chicago area ?

Have been working on the two other sides.

First a pic of the front side:

...of the corner and loading dock side:

...and the back side and the side toward the canal:

Still a lot of holes for windows on the back side.

How large is it going to be btw, hard to tell the size without a reference point in the previews.

Great-looking building! Having more 45 degree corners would be great. Though having the angled side overhang to align with an FA3 road would also be handy.

So far its 91x50 meters (min 6x4 tiles).

Can you can give an angle to work with ?

Stumble over a site with Chicago filming locations (http://www.itsfilmedthere.com/2010/01/hello.html):

Both taken from an episode of Chicago PD.

I also found the film where I first saw this building: Wanted

What do you think about the roof of the loading docks ?
Probably also going to extend the decks under the doors .
Might also do a version later on with some more modern loading docks, like the ones you see on the building now.

Started to work on the back side as well.

Found a report from the city called: Cermak Road Bridge District (https://archive.org/stream/CityOfChicagoLandmarkDesignationReports/CermakRoadBridgeDistrict#page/n0/mode/2up)
In it, you can read:
"Direct access to rail lines came into the warehouse on the
first floor where both shipping and loading took place."

From that I am thinking of doing two big openings at the back for trains. What do you think ?

At the moment I am trying to figure out how to get the details on the building, to work, put together in another way.

Talking about that.... saw a bit of the detailed used on a school tower (now torn down :( )

My first response was, haven't I seen that somewhere before ?!?

Thinking of replicate the semi arc, then 3-4 sandstone like stripes on some columns, maybe even, some the details that you seen on the columns.
Now its just how to go from on arch to next.....

The roofs was sort of rough sketch done in a quicky (yeah its missing an L  $%Grinno$%).... no more than an idea, than anything else

Hi Arne.
Regarding your request.
By the looks of those doors, you would want rails going into the building, correct?
Are you batting the base outside the building as well? If not, then a set of straight DTR's should do, just by the edge of the door going inwards.
Let me know what you need.

DW to DTR
Crude but I did it in 1 hour so just slice it and use it. I even color matched it to RRW specs.

Then with the Gimp pencil draw where you would want it to end, perhaps use the one you sent me as an example as well if you wish.

Had a look at the width of the train doors, it looks spot on. Maybe adding a little extra height to the ground floor and the train doors as well.

Nick:
One of these:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FwMejhqb.png&hash=3d064b61c9e43f5c7fee842db97179066da2130c) (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FwjQ2vtp.png&hash=63f2f3f9ab43d6e6a276c5ffc06d47aee21bd392) (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FfKg5bgN.png&hash=09e330533817fea209f96733e474fd9d589ce3b6)

Transition on sidetrack like this, doesn't have to be as long as the ones on the main tracks.
Leaning toward the last two.
Title: Re: VDK Bats

2 tiles transition with half tile offset should be feasible without compromising turning radius too much.
I will make a few mock ups based on both DTR and STR to DW and pass them on to you.
Then you can pick what works for your model.

Transition on sidetrack like this, doesn't have to be as long as the ones on the main tracks.
Leaning toward the last two.

Best fit would be this. 640x192.
DTR to DW left offset.
The others are nearly impossible to make with just 2 tiles for offset due to the complexity of the splits.
See if you can incorporate that one in your model.
I may have to build the others pixel by pixel which takes time and they will definitively look bad due to the rather tortuous angles on such short distance.

*Edit* It turns out I could make the second choice and 1 tile shorter to boot, plus I followed Willy's advice and made 2 more with concrete at the end.

I'd suggest not letting the ballast go straight up to the building. Have 2/3 of the last tile end in a concrete slab with only the rails going on that. This is what usually happens when tracks enter buildings. Like this:

Looks great. Maybe some dirt (darken area) to follow the tracks like on the gravels ?
The transition between gravel and concrete should be soften up some.
Have a look at some of the transition between road/street and dirt road.

Might need to extent the concrete slabs to the edge of the lot.

Those are png's with transparencies using the 128 pixel format. Just right click each one and save. Then open them in Gimp, modify them, slice them and save them in whatever format you wish.
I used Photoshop to make them.

Could you explain a little bit more? Sometimes it can take a time before the building lights up in the game. And occasionally it simply refuses to light up even if I am sure that everything is allright. Re-plop or re-start of the city might help.

Of course it can be something more serious.

I have couple times made a mistake that I accidently re-render a night scene in to a model that already contains a night scene.  For example if I am tried after a long stint of rendering and accidentally put both Maxis night and Dark night into same model. Then when I look it with ILives Reader, the file contains three FSH. (all zooms) One for the day and two for night. It can coexist, but if I remember correctly the game gets confused and the BAT does not show night view in the game.

Had the game running for some times, switching between the day/night.

Will try to replop it. If that doesn't work I might try to do an reexport.
The daytime only takes about 2 hours :P

Here is a little some I am working:

Been using symmentry, a LOT and copy instances, a LOT. Thing only 15 pro cent is model, rest is done with copies and symmetry :)
The arches (the big window and over the doors and windows) and the edge around the round window, those takes a lot of time to set up for texture.

So what can this be ? Any guess?

The wood work on the roof is excellent. How much of it will be visible on the game views?

Its a train station, the same line as the previous ones.

Splendid, the wood work is not covered by the roof! I love it when details like that in BATs can be seen in the game. This look like a very promising station, Arne. Looking forward to use it. :)

As for MAX, unfortunately as no one has been really working on updating the version since Simfox left it will be less and less compatible with newer 3dsmax versions, specially since every year Autodesk like to change a few things in the software.

Well my first plan is to do a cul-de-sac. Might do a standard version with track pedicular to this version later.
Hope to find a way to do this in two models:
- One for the station building itself.
- Two models for the platforms (the cul-de-sac+alternative).

Thank you Art. Am looking forward to see what I came up with for the straight version too.

Been working on the roof, adding barge boards and fascia and finishing of making the finale roof surfaces:

Its not the finale material for the roof. Started out try the roof material from the smaller stations.
Still need to add valley gutters and plates along the ridges of the roof.

Also the columns at the front have got a work over. Gone from a szie of 15x15 to 20x20 cm.
Might work a little so the diagonal braces get more visible.

So the cover of the ridge of roof is in place:
Also made a few changes to the wood work at the front entrance (columns, beams and diagonal braces), so the diagonal braces are more visible.

Been try to do the valley gutter as well, but I am starting over on them.
Title: Re: VDK Bats

... and after another try on the valley gutter:
Also add a bit of roof flashing around the centre part.

Think the ridge covering and the flashing makes the shape of the roof shand out.
Still need to a few chimneys some gutters to the main building.

The large arched window above the entrance seems to be a staple among train stations from that age; the station in my hometown (https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2912/14336556205_bfef64ac3a_b.jpg) has a very similar one. :)

I don't know how much more work it would be to add, but if you could work check rail details into that bridge, that would be candy on the cake icing!

Otherwise, it looks great, and the train included really helps to visualize the massive scale of this bridge.

Was planning to make the rails as separate textures, but maybe special for this bridge.

If I remember my Canadian History correctly... the Quebec Bridge was partially based off the Forth Bridge, after the initial version collapsed while under construction due to design deficiencies.

Thinking of doing two version of the bridge. One with 3 towers as the Forth Bridge and one with just two towers.
Maybe doing the last one in another color, like the green in the render above.

Great to see that you plan an alternate version ! I have the same opinion tha @kitsune towards that. The color you applied is well chosen to me, this kind of very light blue/green paint seem to be common on bridges  ;) Green or blue steel viaducts are more commonly seen than red ones I think, or maybe I'm just meeting a confirmation bias  :-\ It depends of the region I guess, I remember that viaducts above the seaports and high traffic waterways are usually red to be easily seen from a far by the shipmasters. It's funny anyway to learn that you didn't knew about Quebec bridge, considering how close of it yours is  ;D

@kitsune Thank you ! I read that somewhere as well.
Title: Re: VDK Bats

If you do a picture search for cantilever bridge or eiffel bridge
you will get more red bridges than green/blue.

Saw the Forth Bridge in a video about the new Queensferry bridge, a road bridge that is been build over the same estuary.

An impressive bridge in any colour you like.  &apls

But indeed: less saturated colors are more common I think. The greenish/blueish greys tend to put the bridges in the background, because the colors fit to the blueish greys of the sky.
But also in brilliant red it might look very good in game. See the Golden Gate bridge in RL.

Alternate colour options are never a bad thing to have. But to model the Forth Rail Bridge and not include a red one, that would be very wrong somehow indeed. Being as the actual bridge is red and all.

Here is what I have been working on:

Have taken a bridge of Moonlinghts and adapted it for use in ERRW.
Bringing the numbers of verties down from around 11.000 to 1200 and the numbers of triangles from 4450 to 800.
Those numbers are for to end pieces and a middle piece. (not for the regular ERRW pieces).

Hope you can't see the big difference. There are some. Did add a few extra details.
