Great idea for a picture thread, Nexis. I like bridges. :)

Here is the Südbrücke (Southern Bridge) in Mainz. In roman times it was the fourth bridge over the river Rhine in Germany. The modern rail bridge has been built between 1860 and 1862.
In World War II the bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht in the last days of the war in an attempt to stop the advancing american forces. Afterwards American pioneers erected a temporary bridge called "Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Bridge" on top of the ruins. From 1948 to 1949 the Südbrücke has been reconstructed.

The bridge is 1028 meters (~3372 feet) long and crosses the state border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hessen at the Mainspitzdreieck, where the River Main ends in the Rhine. The clearance height is 9 meters (30 feet).

This is the entrance to the bridge in Mainz. I am not sure who is living in the towers but I think it belongs to a youth hostel. There is a foot and bicycle path next to the tracks.

Why only pics from around my home? well, okay. But that's nearly railbridges only because our road bridges are just boring while the railbridges are beautiful. (Okay, sorry for the many train - on - bridge pictures xD )

My favourite at Vienna is Donaustadtbrücke A former roadbridge converted to light rail when building a new part of metro line 2 across danube (completed in 2010) Pic;Pic

Other bridges I like around here are:
Nordbahnbrücke PicPicPic
OstbahnbrückePicPic
Zollamtsteg Pic

And here something more unusual :D
"Ponte Cagrania" Pic

German Autobahn bridges are usually very ugly. This is a typical example.

This bridge carries A63 (Kaiserslautern to Mainz) over a valley near Alzey.

Graffiti on the bridge's foundation.

Very clever graffiti on the right pylon. It says "If you are reading this, you are standing under a bridge." Glad someone told me.  :D
