"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change."
Charles Darwin

Life

One of the greatest thing about life is migration and the ability to response in changes. Many millions years before 2010, life on Earth was limited into the seas...

... until some weeds and fish-like animals colonized the land.

Many millions years later, life was limited on the land...

... until some animals take winds and colonized the skies.

In 1957 A.D. (or 12 B.T.) an intelligent specie called Sims made the first steps for the ultimate kind of migration... To the stars!

In the 21st century, Sims was sick and tired of the environmental and social problems, like wars and global warming. They want a new way of life, new horizons, new values.

At the same time, others prefer not to rebuild the Terran society, but to build a new society on a new world. Mars.

How all will end? Who knows? Everything starts from somewhere. This is our start, a small colony. It was a scientific base, but soon turns into the first colony, full of dreams and hopes. This is... Hope-1, the first alien colony.

This is the beginning of one of the millions of stories in the Milky Way galaxy. Welcome to Eden :)

O.K., back to 2010. This is my first Mayor Diaries and, as you can see, it's a science fiction story. Be warned, it's not supposed to be realistic ;D . It's all about space colonization, future cities and not only. Any suggestion is welcomed, but I'm not going to build a coal power plant just because is more realistic than an antimatter plant $%Grinno$% . There is a very large story behind Eden, so don't think that this story will end up soon ;)

Hope that you like it :)

(By the way, today is my birthday. Eden is my gift to everybody :) )

Something a little different to the standard MD. Looking forward to see how this develops.

Will you be using a lot of your own BAts? I notice you have previously made quite a few lots that will fit into this storyline.

Goodluck

And happy birthday, T7!  Good day to start a MD, and especially one that takes us to somewhere unique.

Good luck!

tooheys: I hope that you'll enjoy the rest of the story. You can see my add-on in my signature. The B.A.T.s, the props and the texture belong to SimMars team. I just relot them to make the buildings fit better on Earth. And thanks for the wishes :)

dedgren: Thanks for the wishes too. I hope that you'll like the story :)

WC_EEND: Thanks for the wishes too and i hope that you'll like the story :)

Update 2: Why Mars?

"We were nomads, and we are still nomads"
Carl Sagan

Sims in an intelligent specie with plenty of curiosity and needs for exploration and new adventures. Their ancestors explored Earth and now the history repeats, this time on a new world. But why? Why we should colonize Mars? For the same reason that the ancient Sims explored and colonize Europe, Asia and Africa.

For the same reason that some Sims dare to explored and colonized the New World.

For the same reason that Sims explored all the Terran seas, and now are ready to explore a new sea.

The Cosmic Sea!

Earth was suffered with terrible problems. Global warming, Aids, nationalism, nuclear weapons, many of big problems. Some Sims prefer to stay on Earth and rebuild the home planet. Other prefer to leave Earth and build from scratch a new, better world on Mars. But why? Exploration, better economy, scientific studies, the joy of a new adventure, the creation of the Utopia, spreading the beauty of life elsewhere, survive of Simkind in longterm... many reasons to build our dreams on Mars.

But why on Mars? Why not on the Moon or in the Terran oceans? Because Mars is the most suitable to support life with the technology of the middle of the 21st century. Mercury and Venus are too hot and too close to the Sun. Terran seas can easily bring psychological problems to the colonists. Moon has no atmosphere, but still it soon became the biggest spaceport ever made so far. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune has no solid surface and the conditions there are too deadly. Mars however has atmosphere, 24 hours days and nights, a bit cold but not extremely cold, good enough gravity and almost close to Earth.

Also, Mars has plenty of cool features to explore. Olympus Mons is the largest mountain in the Solar System. 3 times taller that the Terran Everest! Valles Marineris is the largest canyon it the Solar System. 10 times longer than the Terran Grand Canyon!!

Ancient natural canals, evidence that Mars had water in the past.

Exotic mountains.

Ice, enough to support the new colonies.

And plenty of mysteries. If Mars had water, what about life? Was Mars the home world of ancient intelligent species? What's going on with Cydonia and those exotic formations?

Close to Acidalia Planitia we'll find the first Martian colony, Hope-1. A colony rich of hopes for a better future.

Thanks to the robotic workers, the creation and expansion of the colonies are very fast. More Sims are coming to town.

There are many questions about Mars, but this is the most important. Will be Mars the new Garden of Eden? Is it possible to build the always dreamed Utopia on a cold, desert planet? Had those Sims right, when they said that Mars is the next planetary homeland? Stay tuned :)

The whole Mayor Diaries is a tribute to Carl Sagan (1934 - 1996), the man who mixed science with poetry :)

Update 3: Brave New World

"We build this city, we built the city on rock 'n' roll"
The Starship

Welcome to the year 2050. You, the viewer of this Mayor Diary, are now inside a small spacecraft. You are going to Hope-1, the first extraterrestrial city made by the Sims. Here is Hope-1 from high.

Let's get closer. Remember how small and out-of-interest was in the last update? Well, let's say that the robotic building machines made their miracle ;D

Prepare for landing. This is the spaceport of Hope-1, small but effective.

Let's take an electric taxi and explore the colony. Here is the older part of the colony, with plenty of block of flats and shops. You will also notice some small industries.

No matter how rich or poor you are, you are always welcomed to Hope-1. Here are some homes, small and bigger.

And here you can see the park, an open area for the colonists to meet and talk. You will also notice the police and the fire stations, as well as the P.Q.C (Primary Quantum Computer).

And here are some shops and offices.

It looks a bit empty and quiet, but always that sometimes what you see is not what you get.

Let's take this road. We are now passing the farmer market and the water cleaning device.

East from the central Hope-1, we'll see the Martian farms. Colonists need food, plenty of food, but you don't need to take over the whole planet for some food. Just dig underground ;D

Some domed, underground farms.

Some Sims like to live here.

If you think that apartment buildings next to farms is not realistic, go to 2010 and explore some Greek villages. Besides, you are on Mars ;D

Let's go south, to see a small industrial district.

And at last, the garbage management system of Hope-1.

From the next updates, we'll learn more about Hope-1. This is just a small idea of living on Mars. More are coming soon, so stay tuned :)

(Who knows? You may prefer to live on Mars than on Earth ;D)

Interesting. I once thought about trying out Simmars, too, but planting trees is rather .. time consuming ... so...  /wrrd%&

I'm curious how this will go on.

Take care my friend!

Bernhard

Tomas Neto

I agree, very Interesting!!! Another fantastic update!!!

FrankU

Hi Terring7, your birthday is over by now, but I'd like to congratulate you anyway. Maybe I'm the first for your next birthday?

Nice story, good lots.
But a spaceport with landing strip? In the thin atmosphere of Mars you try indeed to fly with wings? I think not!

Battlecat

Very cool, I haven't actually seen the simmars mod in action!  Great start, I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

Nardo69: Thanks for your comment, glad to see that you like it :) . I guess you tried to terraform Mars, right? ;D

Tomas Neto: Thank you very much :)

FrankU: Well, my 2010 birthday is over, but feel free to wish me for 2011 ;D . Thank you for the comment and the wishes :) . As about your question, it's true that Mars has an atmosphere 100 times less dense that Earth, but is still dense enough to support aerodynamic spacecrafts. Here is an older idea of N.A.S.A. about a robotic Martian airplane...

This plane was supposed to fly on Mars in 2003, 100 years after the Wight brothers flight. And here is a newer one...

And an another one...

I guess that a manned Martian plane would need bigger wings, something like this...

... so maybe you have right. Wings? In a manned passenger spacecraft? How about something like this? ;D

Battlecat: An often viewer? What a honor ()stsfd() . Glad to see that you like it :)

Good news everyone!

It's New Year Eve on both Earth and Mars. The Martian Sims from Hope-1 want yo give a great gift to all Terran folks of Simcity Community. This gift is a collection of wishes and wisdoms for 2011 and not only.

We, the SimMartian colonists of Hope-1, wish you not for more, but for less. Less hate, less ignorance, less wars, less lack of respect, less environmental disasters, less pain, less poverty, less sadness. No matter if you are American, Russian, Greek, German, Italian, Japanese, Australian. No matter if you believe in Christ, Islam, Flying Spaghetti Monster. No matter if you are Caucasian, Negro or anything else, child, woman, rich or poor, Socialist or Patriot. All humans on Earth are brothers and sisters. All life forms on Earth, from dolphins to roses, are brothers and sisters. We are all members of the same family, both planetary and cosmic. Let's work for a cleaner, peaceful planet. Let's use the scientific knowledges to fight ignorance, to gain wisdom, to evolve both technological and spiritual. Let's spread the beauty of life and intelligence in the vastness of the Universe.

From Terring and the SimMars colonists, Happy New Year!! :) :)
