Title: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: Masochist on November 18, 2006, 10:03:26 PM
I'm a huge fan of planes and flying, so you can imagine my glee when I first learned that there were computer games that let you fly a virtual plane (much like my glee when I found out I could ditch drawing city maps because there were games that let you actually build the cities ;D). But problem is, I have yet, to this day, been able to play any Flight Simulator at all (due to various problems like not having a computer, or have a crappy computer... :computer:).

So I was wondering if anyone had played the latest Flight Simulator from Microsoft, and whether it was worth investing money in. From what I've seen, it looks abosolutely gorgeous! Examples:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FOther%2520Pictures%2FScreenshot3.jpg&hash=ed521ad62d0b4287c0e537bf2db9fbc5ad658291)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FOther%2520Pictures%2FScreenshot2.jpg&hash=e3f3fc06bb93a4bd611d71a44e90505591385425)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FOther%2520Pictures%2FScreenshot1.jpg&hash=1a5d348716d7cb9f887c799fa16059c2326a4ba7)

(For more screenshots, click here (http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulatorx/screenshots.html#))

Also, from what I know, the cockpit is entirely interactive, as in you can click, press, push, and pull every button, lever, and switch.

But I've never played it. My roommate downloaded the 1 GIG demo onto his computer, and after waiting hours for it to finish, was utterly disappointed by the half-hour time limit it had. And I don't want to spend fifty dollars and risk my computer's health by buying it. So if anyone has played it, or knows any reason not to play it (other than the fact that it's from Microsoft), please elaborate here!

Hi, those pics are really amazing !!! The textures look incrdible :shocked2: !!!

I dont really like FS because it is a bit worrying for me, but I have played and enjoyed all the Combat Flight Simulator Series until number 3. The pics you show us make me think all the CFS series are child games...

Thanks for sharing them  Feel free to post some more.

I often play FS2004, and I've got quite a few add-on planes (not as much as my massive plugins for Simcity, though ;)), and I haven't tried out FSX yet, execpt for the demo, which was decent, since it didn't have a very big airport or big planes, or small, very fast planes, at that matter. ;)

As far as I read about FSX it look great but you will need a PC not yet available to run it descently.
My advice is to try to get an old copy of the previous version

why must they make games that only a 2000$ plus machine can run, :bomb:

Ah, yes I remember playing Flight Sim '98 even though I had NO idea about how to fly an airplane. To take off I would hold down the thrust and hope for the best, usually ending up at an eighty degree angle in the air (those poor people in my plane :D)
I remember I would always try to fly across the Pacific by just getting the plane flying twords Asia and just leave my computer alone. I never made it across :(

BourneID: ^ Those pics are from the game?? That pic with the Air One plane is incredible. Theres no way my computer would play that.

well.... they are edited screenshots... ie in my normal styles... (see Broome County at ST if you havnt heard of me)

The planes are all freeware... ie is be a broke bastard :)

the southwest and American Airlines are by Project Open sky... one of the best Freeware AC makers... and check this out... the lead designer and founding member... tried his hand at the BAT the otherday. did a decent job.... a monirail platform... model was supurb... mod'ing... eh. ;) but I am trying to work out a trade...

that is if I can convince both sides to agree....

if he will agree to share his AC models... ie the ones in my screens and 132+ liverys I was hoping I could get someone to work with him teaching moding....hum..., I wonder how much freetime barby has these days ;)

The last FS that I played was FS 2002. I skipped 2004: Century... because my computer simply didn't have the horses. That goes ditto for FS X. I read some reviews that said Microsoft really didn't add much to the game to warrant spending $50. If you are a big flight simulator fan in general, then you gotta get it.
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: BourneID on January 29, 2007, 07:07:52 PM
you can go with 2004($19.95)... load it up with goobs of add-ons, mostly payware... and get just as good, or with some payware.. somewhat better.... the FSX... but be limited in the breathing room to expand.... but a great choice for budget minded folks...

we havnt even begain to find out what FSX can really do... but what is for sure... you will need to spend some money to find out... even on pretty hefty PCs... this game can be a beast.... its optimized (so MS says) to run best on Vista... with DirX10... we'll see how that turns out...

if you arnt running SC4 with under 1gig of plugins at its highest settings, then you may have trouble running FSX... but as you can see... some of the upgrades to my $498 walmart black friday special HP AMD64 3500+ with 4gigs ram, and a BFG7800GT... I am running the game great ....

some folks have monster PC's compaired to mind... Intell Duocore and such... that are having serious issues...

Wow, those screenshots are amazing! I d/led the demo to this game and it took me like 5 mins to get the plane moving on the tarmac! haha. So complciated. I don't know if its just my ineptity at this game but the controls were not good. The airplane barely responded and when it did it was so delayed from when i actually pressed a button as to be practically useless. I guess its the pyro in my but I like real interactive physics. For example. When I fly a plane at full speed into the ground it shouldn't bounce and continue to fly.

So is this just me sucking BourneID?

thats what they say.... but I havnt heard anyone around the FS community's that are yet running Vista so no word on it yet....

For me,.... when and IF I upgrade to Vista and DirX it will be a system that has vista pre installed.. OEMs test to ensure the hardware they have will run windows correctly... I still have a single core system... dont I think that Vista would choke it out...
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: Masochist on February 09, 2007, 11:00:36 PM
Hmm...well, Flight Sim X was actually made to be played on Vista. And Vista takes up a lot of power anyways (for an OS, anyways). So yes, I would imagine it would run better on there. My computer definately isn't Vista compatible. Vista would be the straw that broke my computer's CPU. So I'll be buying a new one before I even think about getting this game. Doesn't stop me from wanting it. Just I know I'll need to wait a while. A long while...although those newer screenshots make me very impatient!
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: BourneID on February 10, 2007, 08:43:49 PM
no one has yet responded to questions about Vistas visuals that I have seen... but one issue is FSX's lack of dual CPU support. There are currently some lackluster work arounds... but nothing that says "WOW" yet...

as for the DirX effect on FSX.... though FSX was designed to run on Vista and DirX... the delay of Vista from a summer2006 till now... left ACEs (the developers) having to remove fetures to allow it to be run with 9.0c .... with the intention of an update being released when Vista does ship... as of yet no word on the release of the patch... and weather other issues are going to be fixed as well.

ACEs has stated that FSX wont have true Dual CPU support because the development on the game started before they hit the market and with no way to gadge weather they would go mainstream... the core of the game wasnt able to be changed.... nor at this point is there any forseeable way to change that.... but they state that the next release... ie FS11 will include this.. ??

as soon as I hear some more I will get it posted up... Vista has only been out a week... so it is too early to tell....

I think that just happens to be the sparseness of that particular area... I have autogen on highest complexity, and high detail.

you also have to remeber that I am running a singlecore... those images have the light bloom on (just wanted to see what it looked like..) and that is pretty taxing on my system... hopefully when the Dix10 patch comes out those details will improve... though I will first have to get a Vista system... for me though... Vista doesnt have anything I cant do as good or better on my XP pro...

Great pics everyone, the graphics of the FSX look brilliant. &apls
I'm still using the FS9.1 right now, mainly because my OS Windows 2000 doesn't support it.
Most sliders set to Maximum, it runs pretty well on my Athlon 3800 with a 256 MB Geforce 7600 GS.
I might post some pics of it in this thread too (don't want to start a completely new thread for that ;))

Oooh, I just love bumping 8-month old threads...;).

But there's a legit reason: I FINALLY got my hands on a copy of FSX Deluxe! Been a long time coming...but to celebrate my new and better graphics card (NVidia 8600 GT, 512 MB), I went out and bought it. Then I went and downloaded the 400 MB's worth of patches and service packs. Typical Microsoft, eh %wrd?

But it's up and running! And what's more, my new roommate just happens to be an Aces High II veteran flyer who owns a set of [Saitek X52 Joysticks] (https://www.mpcoutlet.com/store/images/x52.JPG). Lucky me ;D! I'm doing the missions right now, but I've already got a nice shot of a sailplane over Lake Tahoe that I'll post when my computer wants to cooperate (I'm not on it right now, obviously).

By the way...has anyone picked up the Expansion Pack to this game? It's called "Acceleration," and I didn't even know it existed until I downloaded the Service packs for the game (hadn't even seen it on store shelves &mmm). Is it worth the $30.00?
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: BourneID on February 02, 2008, 11:59:33 PM
depends on your flying taste... you get a bunch of new missions and some new AC's including the f-18 and landable carriers.

I got it but then again I have money to burn... If you are cash strapped you can get some of that stuff w/ freeware downloads...
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Masochist, you never stop downloading if its a MS game :D

I love FSX, I have done most of the missions, but I use it mainly with Cargo Pilot, just adds a little more interest.

As for the addon, its worth about AUD60 over here and our exchange rate is roughly 90c/$1.00. Go figure.

The expansion pack seems to deal mainly with high speed jets and redbull racing so I'm guessing you'll need a pretty good video card to keep up.
My PC can handle the slow movers, but anything else would see the system go down in flames :D

Happy flying

Dave

IMO, Accelleration is worth getting if you're one of those people that just have to have it all. Otherwise it's going to be more worth it when it eventually hits $19.99

FSX is an enjoyable simulation to me, though to get the visual quality as seen in the OP of this thread my framerate would be down about 5 to 10fps and IMO anything below 20 to 25 in FSX just isn't any fun. From what I've read, FSX is far more CPU intensive then it is video card, I have dual Nvidia 8800's and sure enough only a AMD 64X2 4600+ CPU and it is what causes a great deal of the slow downs, of course you can turn off as many bells and whistles as possible to get FPS back up like AI Pilots and airplanes (though then you might feel like your out there alone) and ground transportation etc. Basically anything that is going to suck down CPU time can be turned off to get better visual performance at a higher quality.

I have an older copy of flight sim (probably pre-2000) and it was kind of fun. I never really got into it, but bought it for my sons who were in their early teens then. I even bought a "steering wheel/stick" for it.. they never got into it either and it didn't hold their interest. My guess is that if you are going to enjoy it you have to be something of a "plane nut" as I think it rather gets into the nitty-gritty and is hard to "just have fun"

Here's that in-game photo I promised. It's from a tutorial: Soaring over Lake Tahoe:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FOther%2520Pictures%2FSailplaneoverTahoecropped1024x640.jpg&hash=167ba4cba75f5a3bb7272d7aee599d6973bcfcf4)

Graphics are on medium-high in this one. The plane came out sort of choppy, but the real draw here is the landscape, anyways. More to come as I take them...;)

I wish all video games looked like that.

I wish I had a computer that could run FSX as well as that. I run most things on a low to medium setting and my graphics card doesn't have what's required for advanced animations like wingflex and moving jetways.

Edit: Removed the extra content.

The demo wasnt a very good example of how the game would run, I had alot of issues with it myself.

the think about FSX is that its all in the tweeks that you make to it... the results I got are after hours of medeling with the configs and tweeks to XP... including editing the prefetch and system resources. I have a single core system (AMD64 3500+) and on the earlier builds (vanilla and SP1) I was running better FPS then many who had Duel or even quad cores.

Now I didnt say that, I dont know what type of system you are running. What I am saying is that the demo was pretty rough compared with FSX sp1.

I run it well with these specs... but there are places I do hit low framerates... ie NYC and such

AMD64 3500+
4gigs corsair gold pc3500 ram

ahhh OK I gotcha's, I think after shifting threw my Computer I belive its the vid card that is holding me back. my aptiva I was running maxxed out before death held only but nvidia and then I got an E-Machine that could also be part of the problem too lol but it has S3 Unichrome 3D card and I cant even upgrade it at all....

Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X

From most of what I've ready over the past year many have stated that it's not so much the graphics card, though obviously one of low quality, speed whatever you'd like to term it is far less important for framerate than is the CPU. Turning down the options like other planes in the sky etc that reduces the load on the CPU will raise the frame rate. This has worked for me and I find Im often just about alone in the world to get acceptable framerate by turning off the AI other planes so I never hardly see any other planes in the world but do often get acceptable (to me anyway) framerates.

Via's are built on chips on the mainboard (motherboard) aren't they? If so they may not work in which case your buying a new video card would be a good thing. Just make sure to get the appropriate one for your mainboard (i.e. pci or pci-e or agp etc)

I would have to agree, because FSX relys on your CPU much more then your video card for most things, using onboard video or sound is not an option. These use up CPU time because the graphics and sound are processed by your CPU you are prone to low FPS.

also, if you are using anything less then a 2.8ghz processer you may not get the best gaming out of FSX.

now the trick here is that FSX was designed with a single core system in mind... that being said.. the new SP2 takes some steps in correcting low framerates on duel and quad core systems. so if you are having problems with that type of system make sure you update.

Now you may ask... "my quad core should blow the doors off of a single core".... well... unless the game is set up to use all those cores at once you may have faster frames with the single core... you see... though combined those duels and quads maybe as fast as greese lightning.. each core may only be a 1.5ghz chip... so if you dont set up FSX (though Rtuner or Nhance) or have the SP2 update you will only be running on a single low end chip.

also.. if you have an Nvidia card check out the games section at www.Nvidia.com and they have recommended settings for FSX. as well, do a google search on Nhance plugin which is an exelent tool for unlocking and modifying the settings for your nvidia card.

I know it doesnt look like a highclass homepage but I can say that the mod is quality, and as for secure, it was pointed out to the FS community by the ACES Blog which you can find a link to at the FS homepage.

*Woo Hoo, mega-bump  *

I spend about the same amount of time on FS2004 as I do playing (or at this point, downloading is a more appropriate word...I refuse to play vanilla) SimCity 4. I have a lifelong ambition to become a commercial airline pilot, and I try and fly at least once or twice a week...virtually. I belong to United Virtual Airlines, as a CAT I Captain in the Dash-8. Let me be the first to tell you that if you're looking to join a virtual airline, you'd better like flying, 'cause there isn't any money in the virtual world!

After tonight, however, I think I'll work on more downloading ::) . My last online flight didn't exactly go as smoothly as I planned...I think Denver Center's a little peeved at me right now. :D

Someone give me advice. Is it possible to manually fly an A321 using keyboard only. I heard in some youtube vid that you need a joystick, which I totally don't want to buy.

This is me flying with keyboard only http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxtyrejSiNc
It's a shame I get one star for this. Can someone, who has an account, be so kind to give me 5 stars for effort ;D.

Does anyone know where to get freeware planes, preferably 767, A340, A330, with Virtual Cockpit for FSX? I'm not sure if their are that much at avsim (Haven't checked it out a while though) :P.
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: City Builder on May 14, 2008, 10:57:12 AM
I get all my freeware planes from avsim.com I signed up for their library newletter every night I get a listing of what people have submitted the prior day, and I go and download if theres something new, if it looks good, and if it's something original. Some of them are really excellent, and of course there are some that I need to delete out of my system because they are so poorly done. But overall theres a couple users over there that can really create some nice planes that aren't just repaints.

Personally I can;t fly any planes by keyboard only never could, still can't. I don't know how people do that.

For me, you can fly any aircraft manually using the keyboard except the A321. Sometimes though, you feel that you didn't do the approach right. It's still a challenge for me but I'm only practicing. Despite this game being played by one person, I think this game really needs two people. You fly the plane while the other looks on your screen and monitors your instruments :).

you can do that online in FSX. though it is best to set up a privite flight with some friends.... you can even swap controls back and forth

and just to show off two of my latest edits...

Yup, nice edits.

A friend of mine (online friends) and I hooked up one day since he flys planes in real life and he gave me a personal instruction in one of the cesnas, and boy howdy it was so much easier to fly with someone telling me turn to 270, lower flaps, reduce throttle, drop it down etc etc etc. It was the first time I was able to actually land the plane on the runway. Usually I just land it somewhere in the airport property. So anyway, it's a pretty neat feature having two people in the cockpit (virtually) and being able to swap the controls back and forth.

This game I played by a friend of mine, with an joystick (otherwise this game would be useless, keys are irritating) and I can say, it's a gigantic good simulation game:D I want to play it, but already done the demo and yeah it costs around 60 euro in Holland, STILL after a few months. But I can't play it, because my pc can't handle it and I don't have a joystick. But it is surtanly a game to play!

Actually, the game can work even on the suckiest computer. The graphics would look horrible though. What matters is that you have a lot of processing power in your computer.

i love fsx. one thing that helps is going to display setting/graphics, then messing with the frame rate. it takes a while to get it right, but eventually you will get it so it isn't it laggy and jerky.

I have FS2002, and it is old, but I don't mind it

If/when a version better than FSX comes out, I will get it instead of FSX.

Nothing worse than buying a computer game, only to have it superseded 3 months later (as what happened in FS2002 when I got it in 2003- FS2004 came out a few months later :()

the simplest way: press the "print scr" button on your keyboard, open paint an press strg + v
This way isn't easy. ()sad()

My simple way is this: Download a software called "Fraps", install it, and set a Screen Capture key and a folder for saving screenshot.

When you want to cature the screen, you can only press the Screen Capture key.
And when you want to get your screenshot, you can enter that folder, and you'll find out there're many screenshots.

In this way,you can capture the screen without stopping the game.

yes, I know.. but I meant the simplest way without using software :D I'm using also a program for taking screenshots - it's called snapper (klick: http://www.ovosoft.net/snapper/ ) It's very handy, light and has also quality settings. You can use it in every program like fraps

You know, I used to check out vids on youtube for FSX. I want to know what's the difference of DX9 and DX10 in FSX. I see comparison videos but I don't really see much difference. Two windows, both looking almost the same, if not the same.

You can ignore DX10 in FSX. It doesn't improve the graphics that much. My pictures are made with DX9 and the ENB graphics mod in combination with Real Environment Xtreme. I think Microsoft was only testing something with DX10 in FSX and the rest is only marketing. They only want to sell their product and say "It uses DX10 technology"... %wrd The funniest things I saw about FSX and DX10 was this picture introduced by microsoft to show what "vista and DX10 can do"

Delta, I have to ask. I wanna know your desktop specs. I know the game is processor-intensive. I downloaded this free addon called FTX Blue for Tasmania only. From Very High graphics settings, I followed the recommended graphics settings listed there. From 20~ FPS in Very High, I got 10 FPS on the recommended graphics settings. After that performance, I was shocked. I mean the resolution is 800x600 on window mode. I got a 9600GT and it does well on my other games. I'm assuming it's the processor. I have an E2200 PDC processor which has 2.0 GHz. Let's say I want to change it to E7400 C2D processor with 2.8 GHz, will I see a very huge jump in frame rates? I feel like getting one.

This is why I don't play FSX so often anymore :(.

Okay, here you go, but I don't have a very good rig for that game:

Intel Core2Duo E8400 (3GHz, 3mb L2 cache per core), Gainward GTX260 (896mb DDR3), Asus P5W DH Deluxe Mainboard, 4GB DDR2 800 Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5DHX and 260GB HDD SATA MAXTOR STM3250310AS. My Operating System is Windows XP Professional X64 Edition

On islands, in the desert and at cruise altitude I got with my resolution (1600x1200) around 25fps, but at busy airports my fps drop also allot... sometimes down to 10fps.That is the reason why all of my screenshot are located offshore, over the desert or at high altitudes :D . FSX is still a framerate hog. It will take again some years until I can set every stetting on high... %wrd

I think with those kind of hardware you even don't have enough power to play it with high settings on 1024x768
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: frdrcklim on June 17, 2009, 05:32:35 PM
I dunno how that can't be a very good rig. It's way better than mine :D. I'm still surprised that it can only do so much even with a GTX 260 or a 3 GHz processor. With those specs, I bet Crysis has higher framerates than this game :D.

gaaaaaaah gotta love the marketing pics lol.... I got break into the game a little bit more, a question though is it better to use a joystick then the keyboard?

Joysticks are the better way to fly for me: you can stear with a joystick more exactly as with the keyboard. You can feel the difference best, when you try to land on an aircraft carrier... (on Acceleration) And yes... my system isn't the worst, but also not high end ;) (Okay... I can play GTA IV with around 37FPS on the same resulution, but as I said before: FSX is a performance hog :P )

By the way... I got something for you, that I would mark as a "must have": Search on flightsim.com for uss_nimitz_ike.zip <-- this is an carrier package for FSX SP2 / Deluxe / Acceleration. It is a very huge package (around 116mb) but it includes some nice models and variations of the Nimitz and Eisenhower (for example: Empty, crowded, land only, takoff only, "visiting", normal and many other configurations) It also has many other features like callouts on the deck via loudspeakers, working elevators, a car driving around on deck, different static plane models, people on deck, hard deck hangars (means you can drive in) and many more... and remember this is FREEWARE

here you can see some pictures and features oft the beast: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1245173254/11 (you can also download it at simviation.. it's in the category "FSX Misc"). The rest is clearly instructed by the included readme file (you also should download Dino Catanneo's T-45 Goshawk [simply the perfect plane to train landings on those carriers] and AiCarriers2 [you can place moving ai carriers where ever you want to with this small plugin])

some pictures by me will follow very soon :D

@null45: Nice pictures! If you've got a good graphics card (something like GeForce 9800 and better), I would suggest you to use enb ( http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=248307&st=0 ). It will give you some nice kind of blur and light effects and the best is, that it will not affect your cpu, because those effects are mainly processed in the GPU (The graphics card). recently got FS2004, but I can't seem to get the custom planes installed in the game, is there a trick I'm missing, already tried some tutorials on the internet, but it doesn't help

EDIT: managed to install, but how on earth do you steer your plane using your keyboard? the controls listed in the game itself are all wrong

I would strongly recommend getting REX! It gave me a whole new sky.

After reading this thread I just had to get Flight Simulator X. After some serious setbacks I do now have a certain level of control over the plane using the mouse. :D But I think I should definitly get a joystick. Can you recommend one?
I had a look at the Saitek X52 Pro Flight System which looks very impressive. But it doesn't seem to have force feedback which I think is strange considering the price. Is force feedback important for the real airplane feeling?

Oh, and is there a good FSX website? Something like sc4devotion but for FSX?

Get a flight yoke instead of a joystick if you can. It really lends an air of believability to flying the planes, not to mention it makes it subtantially easier. I don't recall the mfg of the one I use but it was night and day better when I made the switch from a joystick to a flight yoke. Now I've just got to buy the pedals and I'll be all set to fly either FSX or Xplane 9.

I picked up my flight yoke off ebay (one of the most popular mfg too, again, can't remember the name though, but it's pretty much the one that 80% of people with a yoke use) for less than the price of a new fancy joystick. Works perfectly, very happy with it.

The downside? Having to clear my desk to attach it to the desk. Although it just means that I don't take 10 minute flights anymore, now when I set it all up, it's usally for a couple hours flying time.

This is my favorite FS sight: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

I have a Saiteck Cyborg evo Force. It have force feedback and I love it. One day when I have more room, I'll pick up a flight yolk.

A few more sites that you could be interrested in:

http://www.projectopensky.com/ <-- Simply high detailed Boeing aircrafts (complete Boeing 747 series with allot of features) The FS2004 planes do work fine in FSX ;)
http://www.flightsim.com/ <-- Very big download library! But you need to register first!
http://www.simviation.com/hjg/main.htm <-- mostly older jets, but also newer ones (like the KC135R)
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php <-- Many military planes that you won't find at another place
http://www.pairbus.com/board/ <-- Airbus aircrafts... well, the project itself is down, but you can load the buses from this side

happy flying ;D

Thanks for your suggestions. I ordered the Saitek X52 Pro Flight System. I also had a look at the Flight Yoke in the electronics store. It's really cool but I don't have so much room and I think I could not mount it on my desk. Besides it is much more expensive as i would need the foot pedals also for rudder control.

Keep the yoke in the back of your mind for the future. It's one of those things that really takes the fun to the next level. I originally started out with an old Microsoft joystick, and hated playing with FS. Stopped playing it. Then I bought one of the (saitek I believe) joystick combos that had the joystick for my right hand and a throttle control for the left hand and enjoyed it a bit more, but not nearly enough to justify the price of that unit so returned it and stopped playing again.

Finally when FSX came out people kept swearing by going the route of the flight yoke, so I took the plunge since I had returned the joystick combo and I have never regretted getting the yoke. It just adds a bit of realism and fun level to the sim. Joysticks have their place in my life too, but usually now for space sim games. I did have to add an extra piece of wood to the underside of my desk so that the clamps of the flight yoke would hold on securely, my desk is very thin so adding the extra small piece of wood to the bottom can't be seen, doesn't interfere with my legs under the table and allows the yoke to hold securely.

I still don't have foot pedals, Im sure it would take it to the next level, but Im at a comfortable level right now without breaking open the piggy bank. I turn on the controls in the sim to deal with not having foot pedals and it's good for me. Some folks need the full blown package to have fun with it though and I've seen some very elaborate setups where their desks look like mission control with a button or switch for everything they want to control. That goes far beyond my comfort zone of spending.

Enjoy your new hardware.

I recently got FSX, but when I select the 1920x1080 resolution (which is the native resolution of my screen)and go fly, it loads in the right resolution, but once I see the game, it reverts to a much lower resolution (1024x768 or something like that)

EDIT: sorry for bumping the thread
EDIT2: problem solved

Does anyone else know about FlightGear? It is to FSX like Linux is to Windows, minus the compatibility issues.

Hi all

I've been flying FS for years but always seemed to have a PC not up to the task when it came to displaying some decent graphics.

Over the years, I've enjoyed using a couple of addon's such as Airliner Pilot and Cargo Pilot. The 1st was my favourite but the latter is the only one compatible with Vista and FSX and therefore where I spend quite a bit of my non SC4 time.

My PC has however finally caught up, and I'm enjoying the game more than ever. Apart from my time using Cargo Pilot, I've started a round the world trip which I am mapping on Google. This certainly won't be a direct route and I'll be doing it in low altitude, short stints when possible.

At the moment I'm doing the rounds of Australia, which I 've done a dozen times already, being my home. So I'm doing it in style at the moment in a Leerjet, just to speed things up a little, I don't want to use acceleration modes on this trip (yep it will be a long one $%Grinno$% )

Anyway once I head offshore, I plan to drop back to a prop of some description. Two engines would be good, which narrows it down to a couple. Any other ideas/thoughts?

I also factor in a failure as well, but so far so good. I can just see it occuring half way across a long water hop.

So here is the journey so far.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg98.imageshack.us%2Fimg98%2F7779%2Fscreenhunter01oct162026.jpg&hash=eee19e1d0a2ec0c6a1c601d6d5fc0d4548b7871f)

If you are interested, I'll keep you updated on the journey. Also if you have any favourite airports or routes I should have a look at along the way, please let me know.

Dave

Wow Dave that sounds like an interesting project. And yes, I am interested in updates on your journey.

I now finished the missions that came with the game. Now I am totally lost. I need to find out how to fly in the right direction to find the destination airport. $%Grinno$% There should have been more tutorial missions in the game. ::)

I do ;)

I still have problems flying however (read as: I use autopliot whenever possible). Also, during an approach it sometimes happens (especially in Airbus planes and the POSKY 777) when I try to tune the NAV-1 frequency for the ILS approach, I can only tune it to a range of 1kHz (or in whatever it is measured). I'll explain it with an example: the NAV-1 is set to default at 130,00 kHz, in this case I can only tune it from 130,00 kHz to 130,95 kHz. If I try to tune any further, it reverts back to 130,00 kHz. Does anyone else have this problem?

I've had the same, problem, but I can solve usually by messing with where your pointer is in relation to the knob. certain areas of the knob are more touchy than others.
(or, you could just use the ATC button and, go to 'nearest airports list', and select the airport, and have it auto-tune the radio.

yeah, but when you fly a flight plan (IFR) you don't have that option do you?

I don't really fly IFR that much, so I will have to check. I'll get back and edit this post later today.

Edit:just finished an IFR flight, it is possible to simply click on the airport on the ATC menu. It isn't under nearest airports, but when the approach voice tells you to switch frequencies, the option becomes available:
here's a pic:

Okay, thanks already for helping me with this. Also I noticed you use the 2D cockpit, I always fly with VC, could the NAV-1 problem mentioned above be caused by only flying in VC?
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Post by: bob56 on January 10, 2010, 01:45:49 PM
maybe. I've always used the 2d cockpit because I can actually see all the gauges, so it might be a VC thing.

Nice shots, thanks for sharing.

I don't know what's happened to my FSX +Accelleration but since putting it on Windows 7, the performance is fantastic, however even on Ultra High settings some of the VC cockpits look absolutely abysmal, with round knobs being like 8 sided octagons instead of nice and smooth and textures being like taking a jpg image and reducing it to 20% quality. Anybody have a clue what's going on?

On the goodside though I can now achieve 40~ fps on ultra high settings and when the cockpit isn't look horrible it looks great. It seems it's just some of the planes that look so horrible and they came with the game, makes me wonder if there was some kind of extra texture pack that I should be downloading to get the high quality textures maybe, I don't recall having to do that for FSX and Accelleration when it used to be installed on my vista computer though.

Thanks, I hope I didn't hijack this thread any, figured it's a general FSX thread so...

sounds kinda strange to me... What type of 7 are you using? 32 or 64 bit? I know that some strange things can happen with a 64 bit system (black gauges for example).

Anyway... I took a ride on a mustang yesterday:

No, they are not. It's just a combination of some graphic mods: ENB Series (introduced for GTA San Andreas, but also works in FS9 and FSX [bloom and adaptive lighting - freeware]) and Real Environment X v2.0 (payware, aka REX :P) Also the Cessna Citation Mustang is Payware made by Flight One and worth it's money ;) everything is straight of fsx, nothing has been photoshoped

anyway... Grüße aus NRW :P

I have deluxe edition, but what is the SDK? I know how to do gmax modeling, but is there a tutorial on how to create a good, finished model, as far as setting up the cockpit functionality, animations, etc? By animations, I refer to the landing gear, flaps, etc.

Post by: null45 on July 15, 2010, 09:25:17 PM
The SDK (Software Developers Kit) contains the tools and documentation to create new Aircraft, Terrain, Missions, Special Effects etc.

There is a Gmax Douglas Dc3 sample (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/FSXGMaxDC3/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=1329) model on MSDN, why this was not included in the SDK with the 3dsMax version I have no idea. ::)

As for modeling tutorials the only one I know of is located here (http://www.simviation.com/gryphon/tutorials/gMax_00.htm) at Simviation

That sounds like you've got your system setup to open up the autorun files upon browsing your cd/dvd drives. Try accessing it through the windows explorer instead or change that setting so that it doesn't automatically start the auto run program/file when you access the drive (unless of course you like it to do that, personally I'd rather the computer ask me each time that I insert a disk what I want to do with it).

"My computer" is essentially windows explorer and when the wizard appears it asks me if I would like to repair or uninstall.

I have to say that FSX is amazing, However , I need a new joystick cause mine is like 5-7 yrs. old...
I used to have Vista then, when I downloaded the add-ons I got trouble. Now I have XP and it does run better on my PC if you have XP... BUT, I have deleted SC4 because it's just awfull :(
Thus, I suggest either running FSX or SC4 because if you have FSX and SC4 that just creates trouble.
More on FSX later...

Thanks for this info Delta ²k5. Is Acceleration required for the Nimitz pack? Can you recommend any F/A-18s that are freeware and that would work without Acceleration?

Good thread folks!!! Lets keep those pictures coming.

Acceleration isn't required for the Nimitz pack I think. Flight Simulator X Service Pack 2 should also do the job as it provides the same functions as Acceleration but without the planes and missions. For the F-18 I don't know a good FSX native one. I know that there is a good F-14 made by Dino Catanneo like the T-45. Sadly the other very good F-18 (F-18E) is made by a payware group. It's called "VRS F-18E Superbug". Other F-18's are made for FS9... there are some good ones made by jamanese people. You could download them here: http://www.flightinfo.jp/FS_KBT/dai.htm  I see, that they also made am update for FSX :-\

The superbug need a very powerful computer, and if I remember i've seen an fsx patch for FSKBT F-18 on simviation i think....

If you want good FSX performance you're probably going to want to build your own PC. I did some research and found that if you put in a little effort you can run FSX at better than average performance for around $700 US:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Intel Core i5-650 CPU @ 4.4 ghz (stock 3.2)
Biostar TH55XE H55 motherboard
4 GB 1333 DDR3 Ram
1 GB Nvidia GT240 graphics
1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM HD
Coolmax 500w Modular power supply
Coolermaster Elite 360 HTPC case
COolIT ALC ECO water cooler

Here's an alternative, not sure about the price though:
(If anyone is familiar with Youtube user Cessna154, this is his computer)

Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
ASUS P6X58D - E LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i7 - 930 2.8GHz
Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 1600 RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 470 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5
Corsair 850W Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200 RPM (2 seperate drives)
Kingston SSD 64GB
HAF 922 Case

And for those obsessed with alienware, these specs will get you something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awrmpEMqJ6o):

CPU:(8-Thread)Intel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 3.80 GHz Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 Chipset RAM: G.Skill DDR3 12GB 1333MHZ NQ Series Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO Full specs: Case: Thermaltake Spedo Full Tower Case w/ Side-panel Window Power Supply Upgrade: 1100 Watts Power Supplies (1100 Watts Power Supplies (Tagan 1100W TG1100-BZ PipeRock Series Modular Power Supply)) CPU: (Quad-Core)Intel® Core™ i7 920 @ 3.81GHz 8 MB cache LGA1366 Cooling Fan: Cyberpower Advanced WaterCooling Kit (Including Radiator, Pumping, Reservoir, CPU Block, Tubing, and Coolant) Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 Chipset SLI/CrossFireX Mainboard SAS Triple-Channel DDR3/1600 SATA RAID w/ eSATA, Dual GbLAN, USB2.0, IEEE1394a, &7.1Audio Memory: (Req.DDR3 MainBoard)(6x2GB) PC10666 DDR3/1333mhz Triple Channel Memory (G.SKILL NQ Series w/Heat Spreader Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1 (64-bit Edition)

I do hope I did the right thing by replying to this Topic! :)

Here are some of my pics :)

The first one is a WoAI 717 flying over the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I took this pic because there were 5 planes flying near it, very near!

Beautiful! I had completely forgotten about this topic! &mmm
Glad to see someone post more pics!

I do have to say that I haven't played SC4 nor FSX since mid-April because my pc was over-overclocked... :'( I had done it before, so it was totally unexpected as it happened out of the blue! But in a few weeks I'll hopefully be getting a new pc with a new and my current hard drive as it was not damaged :)
